As a child it always seemed like an eternity from the start of Advent to Christmas. Time seemed so much slower then, but as an adult it seems as though time is racing by and here we are already at the Second Sunday of Advent. It won’t be long now. Today’s readings contain the familiar theme of “prepare, repent and make the way of the Lord." We will hear a lot from Isaiah in Advent and if you recall, we are in a new Church year and we will hear the readings from Cycle B focusing on the Gospel of Mark. Most scripture scholars agree that the Gospel of Mark was the first Gospel written and Matthew and Luke at least were aware of Mark’s Gospel and generally used Marks Gospel as a guideline for their own Gospel as they included their own sources and different accounts of Jesus’ life. It is important to remember that the Gospel writers main goal was to convince their readers that Jesus is the Son of God and that he suffered died and rose from the dead for our salvation. Understanding that the Gospel writers are much more interested in convincing you of who Christ is and what it means to us than rather providing a biography or linear account of Jesus’ life. Of course as we read the Gospels some 2000 years later, it bothers sometimes when want the Gospels to be more accurate and precise in laying out the timeline and details of Jesus’ life. We must remember that when the Gospel’s were being put together, they were looking at Jesus’ life backwards from just after Jesus’ resurrection back toward his birth. You can easily see how similar the accounts of Jesus passion, death and resurrection are in all four Gospels. This because those incredible world altering events were fresh in people’s minds as they were paying much more attention to Jesus’ activity and words than they tended to be as we move back through Jesus’ birth. You’ll notice how different the Evangelists describe Jesus’ birth and beginning of his public ministry. You can imagine the difficulty of trying to know and understand Jesus’ birth and beginning ministry some 40-70 years later. Each Evangelist had unique sources of information of Jesus’ life. If you consider Mark’s Gospel as the basic outline for Matthew and Luke’s Gospels, you can see how each of them included Mark’s Gospel combining their own sources to their own Gospel. It is also important to remember that the Gospel writers were targeting different groups of people and so they wrote in ways that their audience would understand and appreciate. It is generally believed that Mark was speaking primarily to a Gentile and perhaps a Roman audience which meant he wrote in a way that made sense to his audience of Gentiles. During Christmas time we often try to cram all four Gospel narratives of Jesus’ birth into one continuous narrative. While it is helpful to do this as we celebrate Christmas, we must not get caught up in the details and differences between Gospels. The most important thing for each Evangelist is to convince you of who Jesus is, where he came from, what he did and how he saved us.
