Page 3 Last week I was saddened by the announcement of the death of Fr. Richard McBrien a long time member of the theology department of Notre Dame University. For better or worse, Fr. McBrien was well known in Catholic circles. He was was a syndicated writer and commentator for both religious and secular publications. He was often enlisted to be a color commentator for different Church ceremonies and events of the Catholic Church for network television. He authored more than 25 books dealing primarily with ecclesiology including his best selling book “Catholicism.” He served as the general editor for the Encyclopedia of Catholicism. He died January 25 just this past week, he was 79 years old. Fr. McBrien’s critics were many. They found his frank critique and questioning of Church leadership as shrill and disloyal, while few ever substantiated their critiques with any sort of substance other than finding it wrong to question Church leaders. I had always respected his bold and honest questions and critiques of the Church. I never found them to be unfair or unwarranted. He was a staunch defender of the essence of Catholicism while having little time for the extraneous rituals and outdated traditions for the sake of tradition. I always felt he was committed to the real core of Church principles, discipleship, the Eucharist and the community of believers. His uninformed critics concluded various extreme opinions of him and deduced many erroneous claims of his beliefs and critiques of the Church, which were simply wrong and untrue. I took several of his classes during my three years at Notre Dame. I looked forward to his stimulating and thoughtful classes on ecclesiology. He was a hard professor and demanded a lot from his students. Most in the theology programs at Notre Dame, I felt, were too afraid to take his class, some because of his perceived unorthodox teaching while others worried about their grade point average. I always wanted to learn from the best and brightest, to hear contrasting views of a topic or an issue as I never wanted to back away from taking classes from professors whom most deemed to be outside the mainstream or outside the box in dealing with Catholicism. I looked for intelligent and thought provoking teachers who challenged me to think and the freedom to form my own conscience, something that our faith holds as the place in our hearts where God speaks to us intimately and personally. I have grown weary of being told what to believe and not to believe, which I believe is departure from the central core of our faith “forming a clear and certain conscience.” While I found Fr. McBrien’s class tough, I loved it. He never forced his opinion on us but did not refrain from telling us what he thought. He respected our place in theology and our beliefs as long as we could logically explain them without feeling threatened or becoming too emotional. During my time at Notre Dame, Fr. McBrien became a mentor for me and even after the conclusion of our classes and even during the years that followed, I would stop by his office when I was on campus or we might converse through email. I feel that Richard McBrien was unfairly dismissed and framed by most in the Church as an extreme liberal and outside the Church’s teaching. Unfortunately this is the label that is placed on anyone who questions things too loudly or too logically. I respected him for his well informed and educated opinions and work. Mostly I respected him for his courage to ask tough questions and say courageous things in the midst the loud cacophony of his critics. I felt that he never received the support he deserved for his faith filled and honest work toward the defense of the true core principles of Catholicism. Despite the criticism and opinions others had of him, he processed an even keel and and still maintained a bright personality with a typical Irish sense of humor. We’ve lost two great theologians and gifts to the Church during this past year, Francis Murphy O’Conner and now Richard McBrien. I thank God I was able to call both my teacher and my mentor.
