Today’s Gospel features the Evangelist John’s version of the feeding of the multitudes. The miracle is immediately attributed to Jesus and Jesus alone. Clearly Jesus is orchestrating the scene and the miraculous events to take place, but maybe the real miracle of the day is not so easily Jesus’ own doing. After all Jesus simply gives thanks and distributes the loaves, apparently something happens in the act of distributing the loaves to the hungry by the disciples. No one seems to notice anything miraculous happening until after everyone is done eating. It’s only after the meal that there is the clamor of the miraculous deed now realized. Everyone looks at Jesus and attributes it all to him, but maybe the real miracle is in the disciples’ role in feeding the hungry? This isn’t about taking power away from Jesus, but seems to be more about Jesus giving power to his disciples (us) to feed the hungry. This certainly broadens the possibilities and the meaning of this miracle story. At the same time it adds a sense of responsibility to Jesus' disciples in participating in Jesus’ miraculous acts. Sometimes I think it is a little too easy to assign all of God’s power and miracles to Jesus. He is the one who is in charge and he is the one who carries it all out. But, if the disciples were somehow a vital part of the miracle of the feeding of the hungry, now Jesus’ disciples are responsible for playing a role in Jesus’ miraculous power. The question arises, could Jesus have fed the hungry without the disciples. Of course Jesus is all powerful, but maybe it is more important in the ongoing history of salvation that we, Jesus’ disciples are a vital part in Jesus’ ability to feed the hungry and advance his ministry. It appears that we cannot simply sit back and let Jesus do it all, we must participate. If the hungry are to be fed, physically and spiritually, then we are the ones who must participate in the miracle as well.
