.This weekend we celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This is a very theological feast day that has a lot to do with the concept of original sin and the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. It is not necessarily scriptural but more a matter of theological deduction. It has the same theological underpinnings as the Immaculate Conception. These two concepts of the Catholic faith have their roots in St. Augustine’s belief that the original sin of Adam is passed along to all of humanity by virtue of their birth. He went on to explain that baptism takes away that original sin of Adam. The problem arises when we begin to deal with the issue of Jesus’ conception in Mary by the Holy Spirit. The question then arises, “How could the son of God be conceived in the presence of original sin?” That would be inconsistent and contrary to many things theologically. Mary, a good Jewish woman would not have been baptized at the time of the Incarnation so, according to St. Augustine, she would have original sin present. Unless…..Mary was immaculately conceived, before her birth, without original sin. In other words Mary would have been in many ways, preordained or predetermined to be the Mother of God and was conceived without original sin. In being conceived without original sin, Mary would be immaculate and pure in order for God to be conceived within her. Thus, we have the belief of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Getting back to the Assumption of Mary, holding on to the explanation above it makes theological sense that Mary’s immaculately conceived human nature would not be corrupted in death. It would follow that she would be assumed into heaven in the same sort of way that she entered into this world. It is also important to realize in trying to understand the Assumption, that Mary while being the Mother of God, is also a model and example of everything good and holy about humanity. Like Mary we came down from heaven (Immaculate Conception) and we follow Mary back to Heaven (the Assumption). In other words, where Mary has come from we also came and where Mary went we are to follow. Well, how is that for a dose of theology? I bet you are glad it is over. Perhaps it is just easier to not worry about all that theology and simply honor Mary today as the Mother of God and the model disciple who now intercedes forever for us before God in heaven
