Page 3 Imagine a television commercial that is about Jesus promoting the idea that he is the Son of God and we must believe him and also do what he asks us to do. Like most commercials for products or programs, the goal of the ad is to convince the consumer to purchase this product because they need it. You see ads on TV that try to convince you to buy product x because you need it or want it over and above similar products. You see ads that try to convince you that if you buy their product, your life will be better, you’ll be more popular and you will become a better person. Consumers, when exposed to any ad, must decide whether the ad’s claims are true. They also decide, if it is worth it, can I afford it and do I need it. If they answer yes, then they buy the product. The crowd today is presented something like a product. The product is Jesus the Son of God. The cost is actually believing that Jesus is the Son of God and then believing in what he says and then doing what he asks. The benefit is eternal life as well as reasonable happiness and peace in this life. It seems as though the crowd in today’s Gospel is really struggling with the ad campaign and the market strategy. They are rejecting the claims of the product that Jesus IS some sort of bread that guarantees this bread that will prohibit them from dying and also that they will have eternal life. While we 2000 years later, realize from our point of view that Jesus is speaking metaphorically and we have no problem with Jesus calling himself the Bread of Life. (Similar to the metaphor of Coke claiming to be “The Real Thing”). This crowd seems to have rejected the product, the ad campaign and the sales person. They simply don’t buy the idea that Jesus is the bread of life and that he can deliver on his claim that promises eternal life. The cost is too high and not worth it and so they leave. There is another group (the disciples who stayed) who buy in to Jesus’ claims and do believe them to be true and well worth it. They have decided to pay the price, to buy into the idea and believe that this product will provide all the benefits promised. How convinced are we of Jesus’ ideas, program and product? Do we believe the claims of Jesus? Are willing to pay the price to join this program and are we convinced that Jesus can deliver on his promise of our eternal life when we believe in him and live the life he asks. What is our level of consumer confidence in this situation?
