.The crowd in John’s Gospel are said to have been “murmuring” when Jesus referred to himself as “the bread that came from heaven.” “Murmur" is a funny word. It seems as though the only time I can think of this word being used is in the bible, but I do hear murmuring at cross country practice when I announce the workout for the day. The Israelites in the book of Exodus murmured and even at times “grumbled” in the desert when the conditions were not as they pleased. Grumble is often a synonym for murmur. A murmur is “a mumbled or private expression of discontent” and a grumble is “an expression of discontent; complaint; unhappy murmur; growl.” Murmuring and grumbling are rather weak or even cowardly reactions to a problem since the person or crowd is expressing their discontent but not in a direct manner. It is a form of passive aggressiveness in that the murmurers seem to be saying “we have a problem with you, but we aren’t going to tell you directly…you have to guess.” Do you have a friend or family member who all of a sudden appears upset or angry with you but doesn’t tell you. They make you guess what they are mad at…control. In the Gospel today the crowd murmurs their displeasure and disagreement with Jesus as the bread come down from heaven. They ask themselves (not Jesus) “how can he be the bread come down from heaven?” In other words they are thinking, “Who does this guy think he is? He’s not special. We know his family and he’s no better or different than us.” It’s funny because Jesus eventually calls them out “Stop murmuring amongst yourselves.” He then goes on to address their complaints in a complete and thorough way. Sometimes our faith causes us to do things we don’t want to do or our faith keeps us from doing things we don’t want to do. At those times we may grumble to ourselves or others about our discontent with the way God is handling things. It is a form of arrogance and pride to murmur about the way God does things. It seems as though during those times we think we know better than God how things should be handled. We may find ourselves murmuring about God in a way that suggests that we feel that God doesn’t really know what he is doing or is asking us to believe strange or ridiculous things. The next time we find ourselves murmuring about God’s ways we might remember who is really in charge and to remember

that God is God and we are not.
