Page 3 This Saturday there is a tremendous liturgy happening here in Iowa, that will gather thousands and thousands of people into a grand cathedral. Thousands more will watch this liturgy unfold on TV and listen to it on the radio. People will go and they will don their best apparel and some will wear the prescribed elaborate and colorful vestments. Before the liturgy begins they will prepare themselves with the necessary food and drink to give them strength and spirit in anticipation of this spiritual and emotional gathering. If they were lucky to get a ticket, they will enter the stadium long before the beginning of this liturgy, no one be late for this liturgical extravaganza . They will gather and make their way to their seats in nervous anticipation, waiting for the beginning of the liturgy. Finally all will stand and the opening songs will be played and sung. The liturgical ministers will take their places and soon they will begin all of their ritual movements. There will be liturgical roles to be played, some more elaborate than others, some with greater significance than others. Some will be vested in bright colors, others more subtle. Each has their own role and each has their own prescribed responsibility and duties. Those attending will watch with rapt attention and will fully and actively participate. They will sing when appropriate and together they will stand and sit at the right times as well. The liturgy will likely last more than three hours but most will stay till the final verse of the final song is sung. Of course it would not be a liturgy if we didn’t have people leave early. For many it will be a life-giving self fulfilling experience, for the rest it will be a time of testing and pain. There will be shouts of great praise, thanksgiving with shouts of “Hallelujah!” There will also be pleas for justice, deliverance and cries for mercy. Soon the liturgy will end and everyone will be nourished and enlivened with new faith and vigor and it will be discussed in great detail all the way home and on into the week. Eventually it will be time to go back to the next weekend liturgy, perhaps in a different grand cathedral where they will long for spiritual satisfaction and strength. The thousands will praise their heroes and rededicate their loyalty to their spiritual leaders and promise to be a better follower and supporter. This liturgy begins at 3:45pm at St. Jack Trice Cathedral. Run2Win4Him James Kirby
