Page 3 Today’s Gospel from Mark describes a scene that if we were describing any other situation without Jesus would be rather comical. After all what would it look like to see a man sticking both fingers in a man’s ears and then spitting on his tongue. It almost seems like something that might be going on at an elementary school playground somewhere. Obviously Jesus has reasons for doing what he does and it is also important to remember that Jesus rarely heals without teaching us something or revealing something to us. But what could he revealing or teaching to us in this situation. As odd as spitting on someone seems to us, in Jesus time there was a sense that saliva had some medicinal purposes and was sometimes seen as a remedy for certain things. It is also interesting that Jesus opens the man’s ears by first allowing him to hear before he is able to speak. I think there is something to this order of hearing first and speaking second. Too often we do it backwards and speak first and listen second. We respond not so much to advance a conversation but to defend ourselves, or impress someone else. Listen to most debates or talk shows and notice how many times people are talking and not really listening. We can perhaps even notice in our own lives how much talking we do without really listening. Perhaps the lesson for us today is the need to ask God for the grace of listening first and speaking second. This could also be seen as a model for prayer to listen to God first and then dare to speak, if at all, second. We do a lot of silly and sometimes sinful things with our mouths and /or tongues. In the Letter of James he says “The tongue is like a fire.” There is a reason why we have two ears and only one mouth.
