Hills Galore "The Road Less Travelled" Online Sale

Page 1

The Road Less Travelled…. not only describes how you’ll get to Hills-Galore but, it is also the approach to our breeding program. We have strived to be different, to have out cross genetic diversity to most all Polled Hereford programs and this started in the mid 80’s when Horned Hereford Genetics were used in our Polled program – I guess you could say we were doing this when it wasn’t Cool! Scroll back and you will see “Breed Greats” like King Ten, Explosion, DH Yampa Dominator (sire of the dam of DR Achiever 8403) to name a few. The biggest compliment we have received from breeders is “we don’t recognize any of this”. We are very proud to have bred all of the dams, grand dams and most all of the great grand dams of all of the animals in this sale - ACP was Alvin’s herd prefix before it was switched to Hills-Galore and the one female was actually purchased from us in dam. With the exception of a group of heifer calves and a small group of bred heifers we sell each fall, we rarely sell females. The females offered in this sale are the “cream of the crop”, many are only offered because we have a full sister to them in the herd. On the Angus side of the program, Mary Kate runs about 35 purebred cows, she has a very nice Angus heifer calf as well as a pretty fancy baldie female, they will make nice replacement females or great little show heifers for juniors. We have been struggling with how to develop these cattle, do we put extra feed into the bred heifers and creep feed the heifer calves, or do we stay true to our program? We sell 50-60 bulls a year privately off the ranch and believe in developing them “sensibly”. We decided we would “practice what we preach” with the animals in the sale. The bred heifers have recently been brought in from the big group – they are super quiet. The heifer calves have not had any creep feed, they will be halter broke because quite frankly, MK can’t help herself! Our area has been in a drought the last 5 out of 6 years, the cattle have had to perform without extra feed in some not so nice conditions. These cattle have do-ability, if they didn’t, they wouldn’t be here. With the cancellation of the National Western Stock show we have decided to sell choice in the bull pen we had planned to take. These bulls have unique pedigrees that will be an outcross to most all Hereford programs. If you have any questions about the offering just give us a call. We welcome anyone who would like to stop by to view the sale cattle and tour the herd. We aren’t usually far from home but, call ahead and the odds will be greater of MK having something “sweet” to have with a coffee! Sincerely,

Alvin & Mary Kate Julia, Alex and Georgia

Here is a big time opportunity to own a Resolute female! Sired by Hills-Galore 44Z Resolute 128D, Roxy is dark red with lots of pigment. Her dam is a big volumed female who traces back to Bowen Western Star, a pedigree combination that is like no other! With Resolute’s untimely death and his short time in stud, we, along with our partners Tyler and Shauna Getz were left with “owners use only semen” and virtually no semen available in the USA. Resolute offspring is in high demand and are bringing top dollar at sales in the United States. We are offering this female only because we are retaining her full sister as she is one of our best 2 year old females. Pasture exposed to Hills-Galore 84C Trigger 63G June 16 to August 25, 2020. Ultra sounded September 16, 2020. Vet called her to early service to calve end of March.

From the time she was a calf, you could spot this heifer a mile away! Feminine, Long, deep, and flawless structure best describes this female. Originally 102G was going to be Georgia’s Bonanza heifer but when Covid hit we made the decision to turn her out on pasture. Throughout the summer we have had inquiries about selling this female and it was a hard “NO” from MK . There have been many debates in our household and because we have 3 full sisters the decision was made to sell choice between this female and her 2020 full sister Hills-Galore 98A Lexi 27H. Our 93D sired females are big bodied, soft made, with lots of eye appeal, their 2 year old full sister has a picture perfect udder and weaned a bull calf that made our bull pen in a drought year with no creep feed. Pasture exposed to Hills-Galore 84C Trigger 63G June 16 to August 25, 2020. Ultra sounded September 16, 2020 Vet called her early service estimated to calve end of March.

When you compare this female to her full sister’s you can’t help but see the future she will have. This heifer was developed in “real world drought conditions” with no extra feed or creep feed. We are thrilled with the body condition both she and her mother are in this fall If you are a junior looking for a female to show next year at Bonanza, take a hard look at this heifer. Lexi will take a lot of competition in the ring, but most importantly she will go on to be a productive cow in your herd for years to come

We couldn’t decide which 7040 daughter we were going to offer in our sale so we are letting you make the decision for us. 7040 is a bull we purchased from Bruce Thomas, Thomas Herefords, Gold Creek Montana, to use as a calving ease bull on our heifers. Unfortunatley, we lost the bull to a stifle injury in his second season. His daughters have lots of promise and are an example of the maternal power. 1G’s dam, a first calf heifer is a daughter of Rafter K K10 Legend 3050 who is a trait leader for CE Direct and Milk. Our 3050 daughters are some of our best young cows and 1G’s dam is no exception! You may remember Georgia showing Bella 1Y at the World Hereford Show, she is still producing females for Georgia’s herd. She was pasture exposed to Hills-Galore 35B Jet Fire 99G June 16 to August 25. If you like them red, freckled, quiet, attractive with tremendous maternal, this heifer is for you! 9G is sired by 7040, our X651 bull and out of a first calf heifer sired by Cal, combine this with tracing back to one of our best cow families and the dam of Hills-Galore Cinch 20E (a bull we used in the late 1990’s) she is the complete package! There are very few Herefords with this pedigree and top that off with the calf she is carrying sired by a son of Yavenvale Jet Fire J032, this combination will be an outcross to anything in North America. She was pasture exposed to Hills-Galore 35B Jet Fire 99G June 16 to August 25. Ultra sounded September 16, 2020 Vet called early service, estimated to calve end of March.

This daughter of 3050 (Tom) has 2 powerful full sisters in the herd. Attractive, big bodied, super powerful and feminine best described this female and like the rest of the 3050’s 24G will make a really good cow. We debated long and hard about selling a Tom daughter, this will be one of the only daughters we will sell. Her pedigree is packed with some of the best genetics to make cows : JB 531 Braxton Cal 605U, trait leader for Maternal, Milk, TM, Sustained Cow Fertility and MPI; 20L for as old as he is, he is still a trait leader for FMI, PWG, Fat and 29.2 on milk and +2 on birth and she goes back to the dam of our Cinch bull. Another female tracing back to one of our foundation females Hills-Galore 114J Glenda 105M, the dam of Hills-Galore Timberline 44T. Longevity at its best producing until 15 years of age. Because of our tight genetic base we could never use him to the extent that we wanted. What females we have sired by 44T are awesome cows and 80A is no exception. This heifer calf is the most outcross females you will come across this fall! Sired by Yavenvale Jet Fire J032 (exclusive to Hills-Galore), this bull was the sire of the high selling bull in the 2018 Bowen bull sale for $64,000.00. Her dam, Hills-Galore 80N 4180 Dyna 75D is a beautiful female with a perfect udder, her Grand dam was tank of a cow, easy doing and weaned off some big ones. You might want to sit down with a computer to scroll back through Blazes pedigree to appreciate truly how genetically unique she truly is. Hills-Galore was breeding horned genetics into our polled cow herd in the 80’s – it wasn’t cool back then! King Ten, Explosion, DH Yampa Dominator (sire of DR Acheiver 8403 dam) …. ..As I write this out I’m wondering why we have offered this heifer in the sale! Note we will post the EPDS as the become available.

When you analyze this heifer calf, keep in mind she is only 10 days off of being born in May. Sired by Rewind 147E, we are all a huge fan of this little “Sweet Heart”. The pasture conditions this summer in our area were not kind to our cows and calves and this little heifer was developed without creep feed. If you are a junior looking for a heifer to take advantage of the late class splits – this is your heifer! The fact that she will go on to contribute genetically to anyone’s herd in the future is a bonus. When you study our program you will see that we are believers in the maternal strength. The pedigree of this little heifer has 2 great cows - 44z the dam of Resolute 128D and Rewind 147E as well as 84U the dam of Resolution 93D. Two shots of Cal makes it even better. We have her mother bred back to Rewind and are looking forward to her calf in 2021.

Tracing back to SCA Pride 21D, one of my first Angus females I purchased from Stretten Creek Angus, her dam and Grand dam are big deep females that are super easy doing and have a good foot under them. We sell bulls and we stand behind our bulls! While we truly appreciate the confidence in our program by fellow Hereford breeders using our genetics either by purchasing semen or walking bulls, the vast majority of our bulls sell into commercial cattle operations. We run our cowherd in some pretty harsh environmental conditions . These bulls have been bred to be sensible breeders, to cover country and breed cows! Hills-Galore is offering to winter the choice of these bulls free of charge with their pen mates however they must be insured . Please see page 22 for details on USA delivery and export.

Sheer performance, 93 lb bw and the heaviest bull at weaning at 790lbs with No creep, in one of the toughest moisture years since 1990 (they say the toughest....and no I wasn’t around that year!). Like our other 93D sired bulls they are going to be valuable to any purebred or commercial operation. His dam 36A is a top female at Hills-Galore, the dam of a lead off bull in Denver 2018 and has a phenomenal Jet Fire bull calf in 2020.

If you are looking for a soft made, big performance bull with a 73lb actual birthweight, this is a bull that should be on your radar. 19G is sired by a bull we purchased from Bruce Thomas, Thomas Herefords, Gold Creek Montana. 7072 has sired 2 calf crops that are outstanding, his sons are powerful individuals with lots of performance and his daughters are soft made, deep bodied females with lots of eye appeal. 2020 has been a challenging year to say the least and we ended up losing Gauchos mother to a lightening strike the end of August – 129A was a Cal daughter who was producing way beyond our expectations. It is ironic that we were dried out but some how had a few thunder and lightening storms roll through – lost a very good cow and to make matters worse didn’t get any rain out of it!

Red, Soggy, with lots of natural thickness with an 85lb birthweight. Salute is sired by our 93D bull who was our lead off bull in our 2017 Denver bull calf pen and sire of some of bred heifers on offer. His dam is one of our best 44T daughters and traces back to the Australian bull Kenya Major on her dams side. A different pedigree combination that could easily be used in anyone’s breeding program.

His dam, “Glena 27A” is a daughter of Hills-Galore Timberline 44T, has produced exceptional sons - Hills-Galore 27A Gunner 69E now owned by Copper T Ranch Fraser Lake BC, Boone, and her 2020 bull calf Hills-Galore 27A Replay 40H sired by Rewind 147E (full brother to Resolute). Her daughter 63C in production at Hills-Galore is a power house of a female, ultra feminine, dark with an excellent udder. Boones sire is no stranger, Hills-Galore 44Z Resolute 128D has sired high selling females and embryo lots across the USA. Resolute’s untimely death at stud in March 2020 left ourselves and our partners Tyler and Shauna Getz with semen for owners use and very little semen available in the USA. Boone is a unique individual and with the “Maternal Genetic influence of Hills-Galore Timberline 44T”, this bull has an even more unique outcross pedigree than his “sought after sire” Hills-Galore 44Z Resolute 128D! Don’t miss out on this outcross genetic opportunity from the program who bred Resolute 128D Selling 1/3 North American Semen Interest. Please contact Alvin Pawlitza 306-587-7399 or Tyler and Shauna Getz 306-858-7515 for contract details.

“Alvin, we have a bull you need to own” Truer words were never spoken by Jack and Bev Beeson, JB Ranch - Wayne Nebraska – they were right and Cal was the best genetic investment we have ever made. Tracing back to Hills-Galore Voodoo 39L, a bull Beeson’s purchased from us in our 2002 Denver pen and with over 150 daughters, grand daughter and great grand daughters in our herd, one can not help but appreciate the genetic strength of Cal with both his sons and daughters. The bulls are long, thick, deep sided, big ribbed with greet feet, bulls that will go out and cover country to breed cows. His daughters are peas in a pod, attractive, soft made, excellent udders and temperaments like no other. He was a bull we used to add pigment. At 12 years of age he is still a trait leader for Milk+36, Total Maternal +67, Sustained cow fertility + 24.0 and MPI +155 We will continue to push forward with his influence in our program, a bull that was before his time and we were fortunate to have used heavily in our program. He is the sire of the dam of Resolute, Rewind and many more……he may have been a “once in a lifetime bull”.

While 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, our family has had some highlights to celebrate. In June our son Alex graduated from High School. It wasn’t the traditional graduation ceremony however the town of Hazlet rallied around the 5 graduates to make sure the celebration was memorable. September 25 we were able to travel to Fort Scott, Kansas so I could walk our daughter Julia down the aisle. Although it wasn’t exactly what was originally planned, it was beautiful day no one will forget. We could not have asked for a for a better son in law Adam Dean nor a better family for Julia to become a part of. Georgia said her highlight of her year is that she has a new sibling who is nice to her and shares her love for Charolais!
