Welcome to the 10th annual Spring Select Simmental Bull and Female Sale. How time flies…it seems like only a few calving seasons ago our first set of sale bulls were being walked by local cattlemen. The continued support in our program by Cowboys and Cowgirls alike is without a doubt the driving motivation behind our progression in the seedstock industry and grounds our program to solid, “no assembly required” cattle, the sort that get out, go to work, and make you money. The Spring Select Sale is once again on the first Saturday in March, at VJV Dawson Creek. Phone order bidding and live internet bidding will be available this year if you cannot attend. We also have videos of the animals this year so please see our website www.fallentimberfarms.com for links to those.

As our industry evolves, the cattle in production seem to get better and better each year, and with the fall run being a strong one, Cattlemen are realizing financial gain for their efforts. Trends come and go, in cattle but the common denominator is unchanged; cattle that come and keep easy, and weight up without extra input or effort, are the margin efficient animals that make the money in the fall. We take this approach with our own females and work to present progeny for sale that share those traits.

The 10th Spring Select Sale also marks an exciting new consignor entering the Seedstock industry, with a great set of coming 2-year-old Purebred Simmental Bulls from Joe and Lindsay Loomis of Polar Farms on offer. The bulls are big on quality and are some of the most even-tempered animals I have been around, so take a good long look at the lots on offer. We are also pleased to welcome a long-time supporter of our Program – The Day Family from Gordondale, who are bringing an outstanding set of replacement Simmental commercial females to town. The Day’s have been long time friends and supporters of our program, and are astute cattlemen with good cattle that wean big calves, so please buy with confidence on these front pasture replacements.

The 2023 class of FTF bulls is an even set with something that will fit into most any herd. A stellar set of Fullblood “Madden” calves (Crude Son) are certainly worth a long hard look, along with a new edition of consistent solid red and baldy bulls from the $26,000 Ultra/HayValley Freedom 2C sire which deserve some analysis. We lost Freedom at the front end of his 2nd breeding season so these will be his only natural sired calves on offer. Those soggy deep hairy $20,000 sired Rendezvous “North Star” bulls that have herd sire written all over them will definitely get a few stars besides their lot pictures, with a special edition son (FTF KING 955K) that is possibly the thickest bull we have raised. No FTF sale would be complete without a representative offering from our go to Whisky and Daredevil bulls, and our black Deeg son sired by the infamous “McDavid”. In the calving ease division, our final set of Rendezvous “Ron” calves are on offer and this calving specialist did it again for the 2023 class, with a few rascals that are smooth made and easy on the eyes.

Our animal handling philosophy remains unchanged, a no/low pressure work environment when handling cattle, with a one-way ticket to town for the bad actors. The bulls are grown slow on a high forage diet, and are hand fed daily a soybased pellet formulated for optimal bull development, along with whole oats. This control allows us to dial in the percentage of daily intake, and monitor the bulls real time. The balance of the program hinges on home grown grass hay and alfalfa and oat/barley silage. We continue to believe in growing our animals with longevity in mind, and want to show the growth potential in a specimen while maintaining health.

We pride ourselves on repeat business and welcome new buyers to visit the ranch, learn about our operation, and visit for a while. We are truly grateful for all buyers and bidders, new and repeat, along with those simply interested in our program.

The first set of bulls on offer off our new walking sire Virginia Madden 338H, are a set to analyse! These sons are full bodied, deep made, soggy fullbloods with ample spring of rib and that extra spine length that really packs the pounds on. Jurassic is a total standout and a bull that we believe will sire a set of amazing calves, pushing the scale in the fall, and adding fancy goggled replacements to the keeper pen. The good Eagle Ridge 6A dam, is a big bodied girl with a fantastic udder and great feet, with the maternal we love to see when calving in the North. She mothers these calves up in the cold and snow and never quits them right through to weaning, and it sure shows on Jurassic.

With his liver red hair coat and nice goggles, you can’t help but take a second look to admire his thickness throughout, and the ample quarter he possesses. This guy is another pen favorite and was sure easy to spot on pasture walking beside his picture-perfect dam, FTF 536F, who goes back to another great Eagle Ridge Matriarch we lost a few seasons back (Jamie’s favorite cow). This lot is one I would sure take a few looks at if you are interested in soggy easy fleshing fullbloods.

I sure admire these polled fullbloods which still carry the muscle expression and performance throughout, and the extra hair on this rascal will be sure to attract some attention sale day. 613G is a sweety, that also has admirer’s on tours. She is a full made female that carries a nice tidy bag and travels out exceptionally. 4

Check out this guy folks for a real twist on the conventional purebred bloodlines available today. Kaboom goes back to a stellar Rendezvous Patriot female that is as dark red as they come, crossed with our new fullblood Madden Sire. Over the years we have experimented plenty with this sort of breeding and have always been beyond happy with the progeny. They posses the best of both fullblood and purebred worlds, and are as functional as they are attractive. 940K is a real pen feature and a standout conformationally, and is coupled up to a set of EPD’s that will be hard to rival this sale season. If dark footed solid liver red cattle with a blaze face are your desire, look no further than this sale feature.

Clipping right along into the next set of calves we kick off a real sale feature set of bulls that you won’t see anywhere else in industry. Ultra/Hay Valley Freedom 2C is the $26,000 sale feature from 2021’s Ultra-Czech Mate sale, that sure turned some heads, and which we were lucky enough to land exclusively at FTF. His first outing was a homerun, with a near perfect catch rate from a yearling, and as you will see in this set, the progeny are sure consistent. Judge is a personal favorite from a Tymarc cow that really got us going, old 812U, which at the age of 15 was as perfect uddered as a young cow and really changed the way we look at foundation females. 812u went down the trail in the fall, and as I write this I tip my hat to another legend, Bob Anderson of Tymarc who recently passed, and who I think fondly of when seeing his females at work in our herd. Judge is phenotypically correct, and although the BW to WW spread is off a tick, the age of dam certainly had impact on this lot. Judge could be a sleeper so take a second look.

Here is a sale feature for sure. This Justified bull is the real deal, and should be looked at seriously if you are into an extra foot of spine, and more muscle in a calf crop. Backed from our foundation 238C female – I am confident you will be keeping replacements off this guy, as the dam is literally a top 3 cow in our herd. 932J crushed the scales at weaning and yearling time, and did so with ease due to the length he has built right in. We mentioned it in the welcome message but Freedom had a catastrophic injury at the front end of breeding in 2022 and had to be put down, so this will be his only naturally sired set of calves, and as such I would recommend looking at this guy extra hard.

These sons are so similar in make it will be a challenge getting through with something different to say about each lot themselves, but this is a sign of consistency and this lands right in the same way EPD wise, so take note. 963’s dam was lost on pasture, but was a thick made big barrelled cherry red girl that had a perfect full udder.

I can’t say enough about the NorthStar calves for their do-ability and skeletal strength, and with King coming from our 305C cow, there is generations of hard milking females that are always held in high regard in our herd. The maternal strength built into this bull is a real wonder, and as I look back through the EPD’s and performance side of his description, it all makes sense. Years of purposeful breeding striving for broody beef cattle that raise easy coming calves that weigh up in the fall, and produce sweety replacements is all built into King. Take note of this guy, as I suspect there will be a few cowboys and girls looking at this Whiskey son. Our old MRL whiskey bull is going strong and sure makes the right type of cattle for our industry, with calving ease built in and growth all the way through their development genetically there. The hair on a Whiskey 54D calf is always a benefit and in the North the swings in the -40’s is handled with ease by these sorts of animals. Kilimanjaro is a soggy made big topped bull that comes from a recently considered new age foundation female with some pretty consistent calves on her first 3 attempts. She is a liver red baldy Capone female with perfect bag and goes back to the pillar AEDJ 12U cow that has many daughters at work in our herd.

The next Whiskey 54D son on offer this year is a typical son in this sire group, that has a bit finer make, but extra spine. He is smooth shouldered and is very attractive through his front third. The KRS dam to Kraken is also moderate in frame, but big in the hip and pelvis department and has a square udder and nice feet, and she has a couple really good cherry red bulls working in the Peace.

Heifer bull prospect here folks. With Taos being 10 years old now he was hands on for every step of the process on getting this bull to sale day. From cattle driving on horse back with the other riders in the Spring, collecting in fall pasture, tattooing, weighing and feeding on this guy, his hard work is here for your appraisal. DINO is a friendly bull, with a nice leg set, and even muscling throughout, and a nice blaze snippet feature as an added bonus. He is in the top 2% in the breed for both CE and BW and still has above average Milk EPDs. The first calver dam on the bottom side here is a really great future foundation female that we have high hopes for, and with her second calf just hitting the ground as I write this, the next description is already percolating in my head.

Jacklight has all the ingredients here to make a big splash at his new home, and with Top 2% for CE and top 1% for MCE, not to mention top 45% for WW and 30% for YW– I will be following up on the calves off this rascal, as EPD’s like this simple don’t occur very often. Firstly, we would like to thank Chet & Jamie for allowing us to be a part of their Spring Select Sale.

Polar Farms (Joe, Lindsay, Riley &Kendal Loomis) is a small ranch located 15km north of Dawson Creek. We have a small Red, Black and Fullblood Simmental heard that we are aggressively adding to, by locating and acquiring proven genetics that will perform for fellow ranchers for years to come.

We are humbled and excited to be able to present our first round of two-year-old bulls along side the Fallen Timber crew. If you have any questions regarding our breeding program or this year’s bulls please don’t hesitate to call or stop by.

Commercial Heifers

Firstly, we would we like to thank Chet and Jamie for allowing us the opportunity to sell our replacement heifers at their annual sale. Of the 125 cows calved we had 70% heifers. If we had the land base we would be retaining these females, they are too good to be sent to a feedlot. All calves were vaccinated with Pyramid FP 5+ Presponse SQ, and Fermicon 7 at pasture turn out, then again at weaning. As well all heifers were given Lutalyse to reduce the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. We will be selling 10-15 open heifers, with a high Simmental breeding percentage in both red and black.
