ustralia is surrounded by three oceans – the Pacific, the Indian and the Southern Ocean. Every single beach in Australia is accessible to the general public. Going to the beach on weekends in Australia is our way of life. With the exception of some places that can get some winter weather, most of Australia is sunny throughout the year. 80% of the Australian population lives within 50 kilometres of the coast, clearly choosing to make the beach a real part of their lives. Australia’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. With white sand, warm turquoise seas, blue skies and spectacular marine life, it is a testament

to Australia’s sheer size that many of its beaches remain empty year-round, especially on the west coast of the continent. As a society, Australia has claimed the ‘beach culture’ as its own, and the rest of the world honours the claim. Fashion labels, recreational sports, careers, music, arts and lifestyles revolve around the beach. World-famous Bondi Beach in Sydney is known for its surf and provides a fantastic arena for people-watching. Queensland’s Mission Beach, in contrast, is almost totally deserted, with rainforest edging the blindingly white sand. Monkey Beach, and its resort Monkey Mia in Western Australia, are famous for

its friendly bottlenose dolphins, which happily interact with humans. The largest sand island in the world, Fraser Island in Queensland, is home to 75 Mile Beach, surrounded by some of the world’s most shark-infested waters on one side and one of Australia’s biggest wild dingo colonies on the other. But it’s not all wild and scary on Fraser Island – it is here visitors can see, and swim in, what are arguably the most beautiful and spectacular freshwater lakes in the world. Bells Beach, on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, is home to legendary surf. On Cable Beach at Broome in Western Australia you’ll find camels loping through idyllic sunsets. And out-of-the-way Hyams Beach, near Jervis Bay in New South Wales, is said to have the whitest sand in the world – so clean it squeaks as you walk. Australians were born to compete! In reality, Australia is considered one of the most competitive nations on Earth. For example, Australian surfers broke

calm as you like, but rips underneath can be strong and unexpected. So, if you are not very knowledgeable about the sea, you’d better swim only in patrolled waters between the flags placed by lifesavers on the sand. Look out for beaches flanked by glamorous homes and humble beach shacks; for cafes and bars selling delicious fare and steaming coffee; for the camel trainers, dolphin whisperers, pearl divers and fishermen who have made the beach their place of work and for the surfers riding high on the waves. Australia’s iconic surfing beaches include Bondi and Manly Beaches in Sydney, and Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, but there are hundreds of other secret and not-so-secret spots dotted around our island nation. Whether you’re looking for the wild or the well-known, every beach is a place to meet real Australians and learn more about us. Celebrate Summer and come on down to the beach!

Local Granite Belt Wine

The Granite Belt wine region is Queensland’s premier food and wine region. Think the Queensland equivalent of South Australia’s Barossa or the NSW Hunter Valley.

T

he Granite Belt is a country haven with tranquil national parks, rugged country tracks, wineries, gourmet foods, lavender farms, a skincare factory and more. You can enjoy award winning wineries and orchards, country hospitality, good food, spectacular landscapes and cool mountain temperatures. Located at 1000metres above sea level, Queensland’s capital of cool is only three hours drive from either Brisbane or the Gold Coast. This is the only place in Queensland that offers four distinctive seasons. The Granite Belt is situated on the inner or eastern spine of the Great Dividing Range at an altitude of more than

Wine Region 800 metres (2625 feet), making it a table wine region. This premier wine producing area also experiences unique growing and ripening conditions unlike elsewhere in Australia. The combination of cool weather and decomposed granite soils produces outstanding wines and a very diverse range of food. Wine production in and around Stanthorpe represents more than 60% of all Queensland’s production and the region is home to almost 50 winery cellar doors. The southern and eastern border of the Granite Belt region is formed by the QLD/ NSW border. Stanthorpe is the heart of the Granite Belt offering a range of diverse wine food experiences; pamper products,

boutique accommodation and access to some magnificent national parks, including Girraween and Sundown. There are a number of self drive trails. The emergence of the new Strange Bird Alternative Wine Trail offers lesser known but exciting varieties to those who are interested in broadening their wine palate. Winter’s frosty Brass Monkey Season is the peak tourist time, followed by Primavera the spring season of events including the Australian Small Winemakers Show. Summer offers cool mountain temperatures and a feast of fresh produce and in the autumn the glorious colours of the changing season provide a visual treat. Spring frosts, cold nights at the

beginning and end of the season, relatively high humidity, peak summer temperatures and intermittent heavy late seasonal rainfall all contribute to a climate that is unusual. The cool winter and dry weather allows for a slow ripening process which results in the development of superior fruit flavours and varietal character. The granite soils are typically sandy and well drained, which is good for viticulture. Some enthusiasts claim that the mineral composition of the soil gives the wine a ‘flinty’ character. Several bus lines travel directly from the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Small planes fly into the local aerodrome just near Applethorpe.

A uniquely intimate

country experience.

Spicers Hidden Vale, SEQ Country.

Within the Australian context, the words “cattle station” have special meaning. They conjure up romantic images of the open range, life in the saddle, and true country hospitality – Spicers Hidden Vale fits this picture like a glove. Situated on a working 12,000 acre cattle station just 60 minutes from Brisbane and 90 minutes from the Gold Coast, Spicers Hidden Vale is a truly unique Australian experience boasting an elegantly restored homestead, boutique colonial cottages, the award-winning Cotton’s Restaurant and endless outdoor activities. Here you can experience all the romance of life on a cattle station, complemented by the style, service and sheer indulgence you expect from Spicers Retreats, Hotels and Lodges. Built in the 1920s, the original homestead is now the main guest lounge, reception, restaurant and bar. Scattered around the homestead, the cottages and out-buildings that once provided lodgings for station staff have been converted into deluxe accommodation. Each has its own distinct character, from a quaint one-bedroom Chinese cottage built in the late 1800s to a six-bedroom cottage formerly the home of the property’s station manager, the rooms match their unique location. And all 30 guest rooms and suites offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and lakes from large verandahs. During your stay you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience life, work and play on a working cattle station, with a host of traditional activities on offer from horse riding to clay pigeon shooting. If that doesn’t take your fancy you can also enjoy two swimming pools, a tennis court, croquet lawn, mountain bikes, gym room and massage facilities. Eating well is firmly on the agenda at Spicers Hidden Vale. Named after the pioneering Cotton family who once owned the property, Cotton’s Restaurant offers an intimate, relaxing atmosphere and an innovative, award-winning menu specialising in quality, cooked-to-perfection steaks matched with a superior wine list. Savour the Restaurant’s signature Kumamoto Wagyu beef raised right on the property as you plan your next outback adventure, or enjoy a glass of one of Australia’s top wines as you gaze across enchanting views of the surrounding valley and mountain ranges. The Gold Coast has grown in leaps and bounds in recent years. One really has to decide what they want out of a trip these days before deciding where to stay.

I

Southport

has it all!

visit the Gold Coast at least a couple of times per year and find myself rarely leaving Southport on the northern end of the Gold Coast. It’s a nice base for a short break. Apart from the fact that it is where the better hotels are, it is away from the maddening crowd. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to party with the maddening crowd, but also nice to retreat somewhere when you’ve had enough. Southport claims its name from the fact it was the most southern port for the new colony of Queensland. There’s an abundance of trendy cafes and restaurants, the Southport Yacht Club and the exclusive Marina Mirage boutiques. Southport is conveniently located next to the Gold Coast’s world famous surf beaches and theme parks such as Seaworld. The beautiful parklands along the Broadwater provide visitors with great picnic areas and water-lined walkways. Being the largest expanse of calm water in Australia the area is popular for boating and other water sports. The Southport shoreline covers nearly three kilometres of parkland. The parklands have gradually become disconnected from the Gold Coast CBD and this has provided a chance to open up this beautiful space Southport has a range of attractions to offer visitors. The Gold Coast Broadwater stretches north from Southport past Labrador, Biggera Waters, Anglers Paradise, Runaway Bay, Hollywell and Paradise Point. The Broadwater is protected by The Spit (to the South) and South Stradbroke Island (to the North). The Gold Coast initially became famous for its beautiful beaches but recently has become better known as a place to party and dine out. When visiting, check into Southport and then go into the Gold Coast and dance till you drop! After that retreat to the luxury of Southport and it’s beautiful Broadwater.

ort Douglas boasts an award-winning beach, some of Australia’s best restaurants and a string of luxury accommodation. This tropical town is well known partly due to the long list of Australian and international celebrities who have been snapped holidaying in this tropical paradise. An enticing combination of sophistication and relaxed village life, Macrossan Street is the central hub of this beautiful village. NEW SOUTH WALES | Sydney

The Emerald City’s

“Must do’s” With Sydney acting as the major gateway to Australia for both international and domestic tourists, we look at what we would recommend as a “must do” with a visiting friend.

M

y advice has always been that a ferry is the perfect way to see Sydney and our famous harbour. An excellent view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House is yours for free. The voyage will last approximately thirty minutes allowing you time to enjoy some of the best scenery Sydney Harbour has to offer. Tick off two boxes in one trip and take the ferry to Taronga Zoo - Sydney’s premier Zoo. Taronga Zoo also boasts classic views across Sydney Harbour including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. There is a cable car leading from the ferry wharf up to the Zoo. Eat in the pleasant Tree Tops cafe with excellent, if partially obscured, views of Sydney Harbour. The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is easier than it first appears as the gradient leading to the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge is not that steep. It’s expensive but worth it.

It is an experience and a half - a must do. Sydney Tower Sky Walk Suspended over Sydney Tower’s edge you will experience sensational 360 degree views of Sydney. At 260 metres above street level Sydney Tower is the same height as the Eiffel Tower. Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney is a beautiful park on the foreshore of the most beautiful Harbour in the world. Open Air Cinema The Open Air Cinema is another must. With a drink in hand and big screen in front you also get the Sydney City Skyline, Opera House and Harbour Bridge as a backdrop. If the movie is getting dull, watch the fruit bats fly off to feed or admire Sydney at its best - at night. Seaplane to Palm Beach Enjoy a seaplane flight over Sydney Harbour and its famous northern beaches

before landing on Pittwater at Palm Beach. Dine at the renowned Jonah’s Restaurant while enjoying the magnificent views of Whale Beach. Then back to the seaplane for your flight back to Rose Bay. Bondi Beach Bondi Beach is not our best beach but

certainly the best known. It is home to a diverse crowd. Cafes and drinks are available by the Pavilion. When it’s open, the Bondi Pavilion Balcony is a nice place to watch the waves and the passing parade. See Whales, Dolphins and Albatross Few people realise there is a large oceanic park on Sydney’s doorstep! Catch a glimpse of the wandering albatross, the largest of all seabirds with a wingspan of up to 3 metres. In season there is always the chance of seeing humpback whales on their southern migratory path from the Coral Sea as well as sperm whales, false killer, pilot whales and dolphins, sharks and sunfish. Catch the ferry to Watson’s Bay then walk to South Head and Hornby Lighthouse. Give yourself at least an hour. On route you will pass a nudist beach. If someone waves - wave back. If you wish you can enjoy Doyle’s fish and chips in the local park with seagulls and harbour views. The Doyle’s Pub has great views and beer. If there is room, grab a table upstairs and relax. You’ve “done” Sydney.

A

t just over an hours drive north of Sydney along the F3, it has proven to be a popular destination to discover golden beaches and scenic national parks. The area boasts water activities including boating, fishing, surfing and water skiing. The big news is the imminent scuttling of the ex navy frigate HMAS ADELAIDE 1.8 kilometres off the coast of Terrigal Headland and Avoca Beach. As coral and fungi starts to grow around the wreck it will attract sea life and develop its own underwater marine habitat. That will create an artificial wreck site for scuba diving and fishing which is exciting news for local enthusiasts. Contributing to the Central Coast are its magnificent golf courses and scenic horse riding trails. Moving inland the National Parks and State Forests are a haven for bushwalkers. Beyond the coastal towns experience the tranquillity of the Central Coast Hinterland. There is the location absolute beachfront, with a golden stretch of South Pacific sand and a luminous sea right on the doorstep. NEW SOUTH WALES | Hunter Region

Discover fabulous dining at Pokolbin

The heart of

Ballooning in the Hunter

the Hunter

Pokolbin is a tapestry of vineyards in the shadow of the Brokenback Range and at the heart of the Hunter Valley.

I

t is Australia’s oldest commercial wine region. With a staggering 120 wineries and home to award-winning Hunter Valley Gardens, Pokolbin is popular for a short break. Only 150km (2.5hrs) north of Sydney, it is a gourmand’s weekend away. The Pokolbin area is a wine-lovers paradise that has produced wines since the mid-1800s. The area has undergone remarkable growth since the 1970s when Australia achieved recognition as a major wine producer and the Lower Hunter was at the vanguard of this movement. In addition to the long-established names like Drayton’s, McWilliams, Lindemans, Tulloch, Lake’s Folly and Tyrrell’s, there are also a number of new plantings such as Brokenwood (a favourite of mine), Don Francois, Allandale, and Petersons. The main reason to visit the Hunter

38

Valley is to indulge in some fine dining and local produce. There are now a number of festivals and events throughout the year. The more popular are: • Opera in the Vineyards and Jazz in the Vines in October is a musical month in the vineyards

• The Hunter Valley Harvest Festival from March to April is a feast of concerts, art exhibitions, street parties, wine tastings and gourmet food. There are many things to do but the main attraction is to see how wine is made, and enjoy the cellar door tastings. Some other options are: • Take a personal tour of boutique wineries aboard a horse-drawn carriage. • Try the superb gourmet restaurants of the Pokolbin region. • Board a hot air balloon for an aerial view of the vineyards. • Bicycle through the vineyards via back country lanes. • Visit Hunter Valley Gardens, 12 immaculate, themed gardens. Pokolbin offers a bucolic weekend away in rustic surroundings amid the vineyards.

Great Lakes Imagine this... the Great lakes area on the mid north coast of NSW is an area close to my heart. I grew up there.

M

y mum lives there and we get up there as often as possible – but never enough! As I drive that last stretch through the winding road that is “The Lakes Way” and catch my first glimpse of the lake through the trees, it feels like a tonic. I’m home. Three hours north of Sydney you will find the Great Lakes region. This is where the great dividing ranges form a backdrop to one of the most dazzling stretches of coast you will ever see. With its 145 kilometres of stunning coastline and

Sunset at Forster

crystal clear inland waterways based around the Wallis, Smiths and Myall lakes, the Great Lakes area is a water playground. Imagine this… your own patch of sand miles away from the crowds…. taking the boat out and having lunch on your own island…. paddling across a pristine lake to a secret swimming spot… walking through ancient palm forests… lying awake at night hearing nothing but the sound of the water! The ocean and waters of the Great Lakes offer a rich seafood harvest and are famous for Sydney Rock Oysters. My favourite ritual is to visit the Fisherman’s Co-operative over the bridge at Tuncurry and buy seafood straight off the trawlers. What better way to spend a special weekend than by packing a picnic basket and exploring the Great Lakes at your own pace. There are countless spots for that perfect picnic offering stunning views and the ambience of nature all for free. If life is about great experiences, then the Great Lakes region of the mid north coast is one that has given me many.

the island seems to remain undiscovered. It’s less than two hours flying from either Sydney or Brisbane. One would think it would be overrun with tourists escaping the cities but there is a limit of 400 tourists on the island at any time. Lord Howe is one of just four island groups to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for the global significance of its natural beauty and heritage. The island celebrates 28 years on the World Heritage List this coming December 2010. Lord Howe Island is not a “resort” island: all the accommodation is owned and operated by islanders and ranges from self-catering cottages and apartments, to traditional guesthouses through to boutique luxury lodges. Wherever you stay,

you’re assured of friendly hospitality. It’s a timeless natural paradise, where the pace is relaxed. Unspoiled, uncrowded beaches with perfect golden sands entice surfers and swimmers. The crystal clear lagoon is bordered by the world’s most southerly coral reef. Just wander in off the beach to snorkel among colourful tropical and sub-tropical fish, turtles and other marine life. The water is so clean and clear, it’s like swimming in an aquarium. Lovers find romance in the island’s secluded corners, natural beauty, luxury lodges and fine dining establishments. There are bushwalks and more strenuous hikes including Mt Gower which is rated as one of the world’s best day walks. To set foot on Lord Howe Island is to escape to a pristine environment, where you’ll be met with friendly hospitality and the kind of short break that you’ll want to return to time and time again.

Ever since I was a boy, weekends were spent “down the coast”.

T

he unspoilt natural beauty of the south coast of New South Wales unfolds in a series of bays and coves. Little townships, many with interesting histories, are known for their fine food and wines, and great country markets. Superb local cheeses are a speciality as the area is rich in dairy farms. Marine mammals take pride of place – pods of dolphins and migratory whales cruise past secluded white-sand beaches, and Australian fur seals thrive on Montague Montague Island

Island. There are two marine parks here at Jervis Bay and Batemans Bay. From Sydney head south through the Royal National Park and along the Sea Cliff Bridge, a beautiful drive that is flanked by the Tasman Sea on one side and the richly forested Illawarra escarpment on the other. Lately Mollymook has become a favourite

destination. It is a quiet, leisurely, coastal town with protected beaches. Set on hills rising from the coast into pastureland, it is only 224 km south of Sydney. Mollymook Beach is a strip of golden sand and a long stretch of clear water for body surfers, board riders and fishermen to enjoy. Headlands offer protection on windy days while the coastline also provides safe swimming at places such as Narrawallee Inlet and the Bogey Hole. Dolphins are often seen off the beaches or whales migrating along the coast.

As summer draws near so does the talk of “going down the coast” for yet another weekend away. Dolphins riding the waves near Bermagui

The town has plenty of accommodation options, Banisters Point Lodge being one of the best (see review opposite). Mollymook has two fine golf courses. One is the 9-hole Beachside Course located on the southern end of Mollymook Beach. The other is the 18-hole Hilltop Course, in a bushland setting yet still within earshot of the waves. As summer draws near so does the talk of “going down the coast” for yet another weekend away.

At night, come alive to a city with a vibrant entertainment scene for all tastes. Celebrate spring in Canberra when the city and surrounding region explodes with colour and brilliant blue skies tempt you to get out and discover the new season. Canberra’s Floriade is a celebration of spring. Every year more than a million annuals and bulbs are planted in specially designed flowerbeds around Lake Burley Griffin in Commonwealth Park. The displays are centred on a different theme each year. In past years Aussie Icons, Myths and

Legends brought floral portraits of Rolf Harris and Dame Edna to Commonwealth Park; The Films that Shaped Our Nation recreated Muriel’s iconic wedding dress; and The Heavens in Bloom used flowers to depict the planets and the Milky Way. Floriade is the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere with over one million blooms creating a stunning backdrop for Canberra’s month-long celebration of spring. It also encompasses Floriade NightFest, five exciting nights filled with outdoor movie screenings, music, food,

But while the music plays and the wine flows, it is always the flowers that are the star of the show, all planted out in eye-catching and unusual designs. The Floriade story began in 1986 when the ACT Parks and Conservation Society created a huge floral display to celebrate the 1988 Bicentenary and Canberra’s 75th birthday. Australia’s Floriade is now the largest springtime festival of its type in the world.

VICTORIA | Lakes Entrance

Get lost at

Lakes Entrance Boasting Australia’s largest inland network of waterways, Lakes Entrance has been a popular Gippsland holiday spot for more than 100 years.

L

akes Entrance is situated on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach where the Gippsland Lakes meets the Southern Ocean. Lakes Entrance is between Bairnsdale and Orbost at a man-made channel that links Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea with the 400 square kilometre network of inland waterways known as the Gippsland Lakes. The Gippsland Lakes system is the most extensive in Australia. The network of water is made up of three magnificent lakes, covering a distance of 60km. Beginning with Lake Wellington at the western end connecting via McLennans Strait to Lake Victoria, then onto Lake King and finally, through a man made entrance at Lakes Entrance, to join the Southern sea waters of Bass Strait. Visitors can enjoy a boat cruise on the Lakes or hire a paddleboat or catamaran in the summer months. Nearby scenic Lake Tyers is bordered by the ocean, a state forest and a river that meanders inland to Nowa Nowa. On the shores of Lake Tyers where it opens out into the ocean on the Ninety Mile Beach, visitors can enjoy bushwalking, fishing, boating and swimming or simply drop into the lake’s waterfront tavern for a meal or drink. Local surfers usually trek down to Red Bluff - a stretch of ocean beach located

beneath a rocky headland within walking distance of the lake’s sea entrance Lakes Entrance is renowned as a “seafood capital” due to the large number of fishing trawlers operating in the area. Catch your own fish or pickup catches from fresh seafood shops. As a holiday town with a large emphasis on water activities and a high concentration of marinas and jetties along its extensive lake coastline, it is no surprise that Lakes Entrance is the base of one of Australia’s largest fishing fleets. The Fisherman’s Co-Op, located on Bullock Island, sells a wide variety of

freshly caught fish to the public. As a water-front town, Lakes Entrance is a very popular all year round holiday destination. During winter months the climate is often a few degrees warmer than Melbourne. The main thoroughfare of the Esplanade runs along the shoreline of the Cunninghame Arm inlet, with marinas and attractive foreshore gardens on one side and a good selection of shops, restaurants and accommodation options on the other side. Arm, links the town centre with the sand dunes and windswept coastline of Bass Strait, popular with surfers and swimmers. A number of lookouts provide panoramic views over Lakes Entrance and the surrounding waterways, with most located on or near the Princes Highway, just west of the town in the neighbouring community of Kalimna. However, for one of the best views of the area, a drive along the appropriately named Seaview Parade rewards visitors with unparalleled views over the town centre, marinas, Cunninghame Arm and down to the Ninety Mile Beach.

Destined for

Greatness

We all have what the American’s call “bucket lists”. I just call mine a “wish list”.

T

o complete the Great Ocean Road drive is firmly etched on that list. Recognised as one of the world’s most scenic drives, the Great Ocean Road follows the stunning coastline of Victoria’s south-west. Stretching 243 kilometres from Torquay, just south of Geelong, to Allansford, just east of Warrnambool, the road winds along cliff tops, up to breathtaking headlands, down onto the edge of beaches, across river estuaries and through lush rainforests offering panoramic views of Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean at every turn. The stretch between Lorne and Apollo Bay is considered by many to be the most picturesque section. The highway is carved into sheer cliffs that drop away into the ocean, offering commanding views of the waves swelling and crashing onto the rocks and beaches below. Outside Apollo Bay the road winds through the centre of the Great Otway National Park with its beautiful untouched

60

rainforests, before returning to hug the coast for the entire length of the Port Campbell National Park. This is the famous section featuring an amazing collection of rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles which have been carved out of the headland by the fierce waves of the southern ocean.

Great Otway National Park

You can follow the Great Ocean Drive down to Warrnambool, a picturesque city beside the sea, travel the extra 20 kms to the gorgeous historic fishing village of Port Fairy, and then return inland via highway 1. It can all be done in a day, but this is such a great part of the coastline it deserves at least two days. Take time to stop for lunch in the fishing village of Port Fairy. Spend the weekend and you can overnight at a great property you can read about on the page opposite.

It protects vast tracts of high quality wilderness, which harbours a wealth of outstanding natural and cultural heritage. The area is formally recognised through World Heritage listing as being part of the natural and cultural heritage of the world community. The core area was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1982 with all four natural criteria and three cultural criteria. It satisfies more criteria than any other World Heritage property on Earth. Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park. Auckland’s mix of urban sophistication and inland coastal setting has inspired a lifestyle that regularly ranks in the world’s top five.

A

uckland is the gateway to the North Island of New Zealand. Auckland’s waterside location has fostered the locals’ love affair with the sea, earning this place the nickname “City of Sails”. Auckland sprawls over a narrow isthmus between the sparkling waters of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours. A cloak of rainforest covers the surrounding hills, dozens of dormant volcanic cones dot the landscape and enchanting holiday islands are scattered throughout the vast Hauraki Gulf. Two of the best island getaways are Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island. Auckland’s heart beats to a Polynesian rhythm, its people a melting pot of European, South Pacific and Asian cultures and a strong indigenous Maori heritage. This diversity brings with it an abundance of unique dining and shopping experiences. Auckland’s temperate climate, easy access to the coast and variety of activities earn the city consistent top five rankings in international lifestyle surveys. Discover for yourself why it is one of New Zealand’s best destinations. The distance from Sydney to Auckland

is 2,159 km or 1,341 miles. The approximate average non-stop flight time from Sydney to Auckland is around 3 hour 30 minutes. Wherever you stay in Auckland, you’re never far from breathtaking scenery, beautiful beaches, invigorating walks, idyllic holiday islands, outstanding food and wine, great shopping and exciting nightlife. Auckland has all of the large-scale

attractions you would expect of a big city – museums, galleries, zoos and family amusement parks. There’s no shortage of activities when it comes to Auckland. From sailing in the harbour to bungy jumping off the Auckland Harbour Bridge, horse-riding along a white sand beach or playing a round of golf on a scenic peninsula - Auckland has it all. ew Zealand is the most popular overseas destination for Australians and, likewise, Australia is the most popular overseas destination for New Zealanders. Apart from being relatively close and speaking the same language (sort of) the two countries complement each other in many ways. There are no deserts in New Zealand for example. Conversely, our mountains are humbled by those of New Zealand. In the South Island of New Zealand’s Mount Cook National Park alone there are 23 peaks over 3000 metres high. Compare this to Australia where our single highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, is 2,228 metres high. So if it is mountains and alpine pursuits you pine for, why would you not

get on a plane and head to New Zealand? Turn an Australian dollar into nearly $1.30 NZ on the way making it all better value! The approximate average non-stop flight time from Sydney to Queenstown is around 3 hours. In early September, Virgin Blue Group Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said, “Our Guests have lobbied us for some time to start direct flights from Sydney to Queenstown so we’re responding to them with the opening of this new route.” He continued, “It’s no secret Queenstown is one of New Zealand’s most popular year round destinations and we’re excited to be bringing more choice and convenience for travellers wanting to fly direct and fly

affordably.” The service will operate year round to entice travellers to experience the summer sights and delights of the region including wineries, bush walking and of course mountain climbing. Pacific Blue has one-way internet Spring Sale fares from Queenstown to Sydney from just $209. Convenient connecting flights are also available from Queenstown to and from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Canberra. I suggested to my wife we go skiing for the Weekend – in New Zealand! As usual she thought I was crazy, but with a bit of planning we had a great weekend. Leaving Sydney on a Friday afternoon, I was comfortably sitting in a luxury ski lodge dining by a fire in Queenstown and gazing up at the Remarkables mountains by 8pm. The weekend was a full one as we experienced a host of new sights and adventures. And all in time to be back at my office Monday morning. A great weekend for two that will be remembered for a long time! Check out the great spots to stay in New Zealand’s south island on the following pages. Eat, pray, love in

Bali

I’ve just been to the premiere of the movie “Eat Pray Love”. In it Liz Gilbert (played by Julia Roberts) had everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of.

Y

et like so many others, she found herself lost, confused, and searching for what she really wanted in life. Newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone and embarks on a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self-discovery. In her travels, she discovers the true pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace of true love in Bali. In Bali, we meet many people like that. It is a haven for people seeking inner

90

harmony. I wonder if Bali will now be spoiled by millions of American women flocking there in search of their very own Javier Bardem? Somehow, I doubt it. “Isn’t Bali spoiled already?” is invariably the question that greets me when I return home. In the 34 years that I’ve been regularly returning to the island, rumours of its imminent demise have been as regular, and as long-lasting, as the full moon. The best thing that could come out of the movie “Eat Pray Love” is that more people might question the sleepwalking that is so often

our daily lives and try something different. Gilbert tells us openly that for her, the island was a perfect sanctuary in which to collect her thoughts, to meditate, to talk to medicine men and a warm, spirited, female healer. Hollywood is the spiritual home of make believe so I had assumed that much would be lost in the translation to the screen of Gilbert’s Bali. The Balinese section of Gilbert’s book was always going to be the hardest to make fresh, if only because it is not really about the complications of searching for but the sweetness of finding happiness.

Terrace rice fields in Ubud

Will you be inspired by the movie and the book “Eat Pray Love” to go to Bali? If so you may like to follow in the footsteps of Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of “Eat Pray Love” who rented a villa in Ubud while she was in Bali writing the book. Much of the movie is filmed there. Ubud is a village that feels spiritual and tranquil, and I can see why Elizabeth Gilbert chose it as her retreat. Ubud has a lot of yoga studios, quirky little cafes and restaurants, bookstores and spas. Ubud has always been a haven for artists. It is the art centre of Bali. On the drive up there you will pass through whole villages populated by various craftsmen such as wood carvers and silversmiths. Neighbouring villages are well known for unique bamboo crafts and furniture, wood and stone carving and many other crafts. Apart from the fine and cheap restaurants, respected museums provide a further reason to stay a bit longer. The Ubud area is around two to three hundred metres above sea level and surrounded by rice fields which make it noticeably cooler than other destinations in Bali. Ubud is popular today because it is the best place in Bali to break out of tourist mode and get off the beaten track while still

weekendsfortwo.com.au

being centrally located. Accommodations in Ubud are more reasonably priced than in the beach towns of Bali. But atmosphere is perhaps the major attraction. One visitor

summed it up this way: Kuta is madness, Sanur is sterile, and Nusa Dua is culturally isolated; Ubud is the place to go to eat, pray and love.

hao Lak is one of Thailand’s most peaceful resort destinations. No less than three national parks are embraced by the surrounding hills that sweep down to this lovely stretch of coastline with beaches that go on for miles. Khao Lak offers an oasis for relaxation, with a superb combination of cool tropical forest, lovely beachfront accommodation and expansive white sand beaches. The tsunami of 26th December 2004, which was triggered by the most powerful earthquake in the world for the last forty years, took a heavy toll on Khaolak.

Experience incredible snorkelling and diving

94

Following the tsunami, Khao Lak has made a remarkable recovery and the endless beaches are as lovely and as beautiful as ever. The jungle has reclaimed the Khao Lak coastline. There are no high-rise buildings. Khao Lak’s greatest asset now is its pristine jungle and its clear waters. It really is beautiful - it’s Thailand untouched by mass tourism.

The name Khao Lak literally means Lak Mountain. Lak Mountain is one of the main peaks in the small mountainous region (maximum height 1,050 meters) within the Khao Lak Lam Ru national park. It has now simply come to be known as “the mountain beside the sea”. The Khao Lak environs also offer some splendid offshore diving and snorkelling experiences. Live coral formations can be found just off the coast. There is also a nearby wreck dive. The Similian Islands National Marine

Also within reach to the North West is the Surin Islands National Marine Park; these islands are suited to exploring and hiking in addition to snorkelling and diving. Some of the best reefs at Surin do not require scuba gear. This beautiful stretch of Thai coastline beside the Andaman Sea provides the perfect destination for a relaxing seaside break.
