The pursuit of HAPPINESS
“A Two-Way Mirror - Looking Within, Looking Without”
Is Happiness a Skill or a way of being? Happiness is both. To achieve a steady state of ‘happy’ the qualities to develop the skills lie within us. These cultivate, nurture and protect this way of being. Happiness found outside ourselves exists, but in the main is short lived.
What Works?
KNOW THYSELF We have to take a look under the dash to see how the engine works and adjust it to get ourselves moving. VALUE OTHERS by being aware of yourself in relation to them. WATCH & FEEL what’s really important to you. BE CURIOUS question and research ideas. EVALUATE possible choices. REFUTE negative thinking. DUMP your inner CRITIC. IDLE before final action. Step up with COURAGE to give things a go.
If your pursuit of Happiness is not taking the direction you want counselling is there to facilitate it!

Welcome to Shine Magazine Issue 20
Reflect light, be bright, glow, be clearly visible, be brilliant, excel, sunshine, take a liking to… When I think about what makes me happy so many things pop to mind, family, a sunny day, time with friends, relaxing with a good book, holidays, being pampered and catching a good fish. This also depends on where my head is at on that day as to what makes me happy. We often put so much pressure on ourselves trying to meet a deadline, reach our goals or simply wanting to relax and this is what effects our overall thinking and mood we are often in. I have found fishing to be one of the simple pleasures that takes me out of my normal life zone and puts me in a place where I am surrounded by nature, relax and enjoy the peacefulness regardless if I catch a fish or not. A fishing trip can ‘Give My Mind a Makeover’ and don’t think there is a day when I’ve returned from a fishing adventure that there isn’t a smile on my face. We hope in this issue you find some great resources and services that can help give your mind that make over and BE HAPPY NOW. Shine Magazine was once an idea jotted down on a piece of paper that blossomed into the Shire’s leading health and lifestyle magazine. After penning the past 20 issues of Shine it gives me a great sense of achievement and makes me very proud and happy to see where this journey has taken me and now I feel it is my time to turn the page and start a new chapter in my life. Thank you to everyone for all their wonderful support over the past 5 years and for putting a smile on my face.

Question answer Q
Our family loves eating bananas however they seem to go brown very quickly. What is the best way to store them so they last a little longer and can they be frozen? Jacquie, Miranda It is best to store bananas in the open at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Bananas can be stored in the fridge when ripe although they will blacken but the actual banana will not ripen further. • Don’t store overripe bananas alongside young bananas as it speeds up the ripening process. • Once bananas become overripe they can be thrown in the freezer skin on and used for cooking (our favourite is simple banana bread) Emma - Shire Organics ref:page 29

a mind makeover
In order to train the mind we must first
understand its nature Knowledge about you is the foundation for real happiness. YOU knowing how you use your mind is your most valuable tool. In the well renowned text, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche, Rinpoche suggests there are many aspects of the mind but two stand out when attempting to train the mind. 1 The ordinary or thinking mind (Sem) 2 The nature of mind (Rigpa) He then suggests our success in experiencing happiness is dependent on how we inhabit and utilize these aspects of mind. Our thinking mind, often referred to as the monkey mind, houses our tendencies to action and reaction, which when using it without awareness as its regulator, can lead to excessive and negative habits of thinking, such as, worry. It has a tendency to grasp and cling to ideas. If unsupervised can feel like an endless film loop of our own personal natural disasters. Put simply, we suffer! Our nature of mind houses our tendency to observe, seek stillness, harmony, balance and peace. It is essentially non-reactionary and is consumed by the experience of the present moment. This tells us we all have the potential to regulate our reactivity. The secret lies in the training of our mind to adapt to our changing needs. Mindfulness practices help us recognize the changes occurring around us and our reactions to them. Meditative practices help us regulate our reactions to changes by training us to observe and contain unnecessary reactivity. Imagine the sky on a cloudy day. The process of training our mind is to part the clouds (which are our chaotic and undisciplined thoughts and emotions, obscuring our natural creative intelligence), to create access to it.
Practise mindfulness
Simply slow down enough to observe yourself in action. 10
ShineSUMMER2010
Practise the art of meditation Meditation practice creates an inner stillness no matter what external circumstances come your way. The more regular the practice the more the mind is trained to react calmly to whatever arises. As with any skill it is acquired through steps and stages, allowing you to gradually unfold to its benefits. There are many forms of meditative practices from which to choose. The most important feature is your own natural compatibility with the method and the motivation you develop from its practice to continue. Deena Thompson is a counsellor, practitioner and teacher in the Art of Mindfulness & Meditation. Her style of practice is strongly influenced by the Buddhist tradition of Meditation & Mindfulness. She is also a practitioner of Yoga from where she gains further practice in the art of inner stillness. She operates her practice from 38 Burleigh Avenue, Caringbah with the team of therapists at Health in Our Hands. Classes in Meditation & Mindfulness run on Monday evenings at regular intervals throughout the year. Contact Deena on 0438 811 117.

someone in the shire Lois Wolf tells us her edited version of 5,842 kilometres cycling from Western Australia back to the Sutherland Shire… My name is Lois and most of the time I work as a fitness instructor in the Sutherland Shire. Not over the last three months however. From the 29th August, until I arrived home on the 9th of November, I have cycled from Perth, following the coast as closely as possible, back home to Illawong. Most people think I am crazy and I am always asked if I am doing it to raise money for charity. I actually did the ride simply because I enjoy cycling. It was also a cheap way to have an extended holiday and I wanted to see parts of Australia I had never been to before. I cycled alone and unsupported, staying in several different types of accommodation. I couch-surfed around most of Western Australia (staying in peoples’ homes who had agreed to host me via the CouchSurfing site), stayed in roadhouse motels across the Nullarbor and lots of camping ground cabins and youth hostels. Once I had to sleep in the very lightweight tent I carried all the way in case of emergencies. I rode a touring bike carrying rear panniers with a front bag and a small backpack. The only problems I had with the bike were about 11 flat tyres, which I was able to fix without too many problems. I met many people along the way who nearly all asked the same questions. Here are the questions and answers – Why are you doing this alone, isn’t it dangerous? I chose to cycle alone basically because it makes things much easier. I never had to wait for anyone to get ready and never felt I was holding anyone up. I could make my own decisions on how far I wanted to cycle each day and when to take breaks. People would always talk to me because I was alone, thus I made lots of new friends and met many interesting people. I never felt like I was in danger. People, particularly the grey nomads, would always be very helpful and extremely generous. Nobody out there wanted to hurt me…. only help. Being female always seemed to be an advantage with people often giving me meals and free accommodation. How far do you ride each day? Daily distances were totally dependent on where the towns were. Across the Nullarbor I usually had to cycle over 180kms a day to reach the next roadhouse. My 12
ShineSUMMER2010
longest distance in one day was 194kms from Norseman to Balladonia, but the toughest was the 183kms I covered between Madura to Eucla taking 10 hours battling strong headwinds and freezing cold weather. I was confronted by many large hills and mountains from southeast Victoria, all the way up the NSW coast. I tried to limit those days to under 100kms per day, as they were very strenuous. My total mileage was 5,842kms done over 55 days of actual cycling. I had six or seven rest days and took 2 weeks out to fly to Tasmania for a driving holiday with my husband, Rod. Don’t you have a sore bottom or legs? No! I had a comfortable seat that I was happy to sit on all day. My legs were conditioned from cycling up to 200kms a week before I left, and from doing lots of squats and lunges during classes and fitness sessions. Do you get lonely? What about your family… how are they coping? I was never lonely! Not only did I meet lots of people, I called home every evening to touch base with my family. I also e-mailed a large group of friends every couple of days. They would often send encouraging notes back to me. My youngest daughter is 19 years old and very capable. She and my husband were able to manage the housework between them, however, she was pretty happy to see me ringing the doorbell on Monday 9th November when I arrived home after spending 72 days away from home.
MODERN COSMETIC DENTISTRY Advances in cosmetic dentistry have given us the ability to create natural, attractive looking teeth. Gaps can be filled, discolourations can be corrected, shapes can be enhanced and teeth can be whitened. All with the goal of improving a smile. To achieve great results we need to look at the overall smile as well as the fine details of the teeth. It takes a lot of effort to achieve a great result. Proportions need to be correct, the colour needs to be carefully matched and the shape must suit the age and gender of the patient. The surface texture needs to copy the surrounding teeth and the edges need to be hidden. We feel that the best cosmetic dentistry should go unseen. For that to happen the success is in the details.

Tara Armstrong Children change your life there is no question about that! For local Sutherland Shire woman Tara Armstrong, her life changed dramatically in December 2008, from working long hours as a restaurant manager, to becoming a mum and working even longer hours. After considering ways to work and still spend time with her beautiful baby, Tara decided to open her very own Smallprint franchisee for the Sutherland Shire and Bankstown region in October 2009. “Being able to provide others with bespoke pieces of keepsake jewellery of their children’s fingerprints, handprints and footprints allowed me capture those special moments. with foods
Foods have a major impact on our mood, and ability to cope and be happy. Eating and living well can help support good mental health. 1 Minimise sugars and processed grains normalising blood sugar levels and avoiding hypoglycemia are important for optimal brain function. 2 High quality omega 3 fats - fish oil, cod liver oil, or krill oil can supply the essential fats that help manage depression...without nasty side effects. 3 Folate, B12, B3, B6 - these are B vitamins that are important in the production of neurotransmitters (brain mood chemicals). 4 Avoid / limit alcohol and caffeine - substances that either depress or stimulate the nervous system can affect our ability to cope with stress, the quality of our sleep, and may exacerbate anxiety and panic attacks.

On your way to Happiness?
Which path are you following? The way to happiness has been the subject of many a philosopher and ordinary human since ancient times. There are two broad schools of thought about which path to take. The first is to seek happiness through acquisition & accumulation of achievement of material wealth, power or fame. The second is to seek it through building of personal character. That is, a character that seeks mastery over excessiveness, lives a life that includes service to others and is largely filled with a curiosity to know him/her, with the view to learning how to better use
one’s intelligences to live well and relate to the larger community of humanity. Which path are you following and how much success are you having? Cronulla
Surfing Academy Last week local surf school Cronulla Surfing Academy ran a program for the underprivileged youth of Sydney. The group was from the settlement neighbourhood centre in Redfern. The lesson was a reward from the settlement neighbourhood centre to the kids who had made major improvements in their behaviour over the past year. The children were in their early teens and had an awesome but somewhat humbling experience out in the ocean riding waves. Shelley Forrest head coach of the lesson said “It was unreal to see the stoke on the kids faces when they were out surfing with us. They have all been through a lot in their lives and it actually made me realize how lucky we are to grow up in such an amazing place with the ocean at our doorstep.” The kids were really grateful for the experience

Massaging the Mind
for Happiness Clinical Studies have found that massage is an excellent way of reducing stress, anxiety as well as depression. The chemicals released in the body while experiencing a massage is very therapeutic to the body and mind. Massaging increases dopamine and serotonin as well as reducing the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Massaging also increases pain relieving levels of endorphin as well as increasing the alpha waves in the brain, which gives you that relaxed happy feeling. The other benefits of massage are stabilising blood sugar and it also boosts your immune system as well as improving lung function and giving a feeling of general well being. There are many styles of massages that will leave you feeling content and happy. While some like the harder type of massage such as Remedial others feel just as content and happy with an Aromatherapy or Swedish massage. If you add to the massage essential oils such as Mandarin,Ylang Ylang or Sweet Orange
combined with calming music and a qualified therapist who is able to combine the appropriate massage that best suits your needs, you will feel like you’re on cloud nine in no time. Suzanne Ward Tranquil Loft, ph:9523 8173 or www.tranquilloft.com.au

you are what you eat
Raw superfoods for a healthy
body & mind Want more energy? Are you emotionally and mentally exhausted? The one answer may be to increase more raw foods into your daily eating plan. By drinking your nutrition in liquid form at least once every day little effort is required for digestion and assimilation, giving your body extra time to heal and regulate bringing you even closer to the energy you desire. Green Smoothies have the benefit of incorporating green leafy greens in their raw state. This will help alkalize the body as well as provide protein, calcium, antioxidants and live enzymes, which are the essential elements that your mind and body need to function properly.
Super Foods Coconut water is a great rehydrator during the hot months and will support the immune system, increase metabolism, and will not increase the blood cholesterol levels. Chia Seeds are the highest known plant source of Omega 3 EFA’s. Chia is also a good source of potassium, phosphorus, folate, zinc, fibre, Vit A, B12 & C. Packed with complete protein, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, more magnesium than broccoli and an ORAC value 4 times higher than blueberries. property watch Choosing a real estate agent to sell your home can be a daunting process! My advice is to make a check list and write down the things that are most important to you whilst you are selling. Such as achieving the highest possible price, or selling in a short time frame, or even working with an agent that you feel you can trust. “Shopping for an agent” is the best way to get started. Go to a few open homes and take note of how the home is presented for sale, how does the agent speak about the home, and are they helpful when they call you to see what you thought about the home. My final tips are to look for an agent that is professional, with the backing of a well branded company, as this is what will attract buyer inquiry. Experience in the industry is important, as is selling similar types of properties in the same price range as your own home. Also make sure that they sell all or most of their listings. At the end of the day, go with your gut feeling and the agent that you feel you can

Todd Mingramm How the ocean brings him back to reality and reminds him of what really matters in life.
Todd’s love for surfing started around 8 years old when his dad would put him on the front of his Malibu. “He would put me on the front of his board, catch waves and stand me up holding me upright so it felt like I was surfing. All I remember is all the water splashing in my face and the feeling of fear and excitement, and when the wave would finish I would want to do it again.” By 10 years old Todd was surfing everyday and competing in his local board riders club ‘Elouera Board riders Club.’ As an early teen he was competing locally and interstate, he was sponsored by Billabong and other big name companies. His mum dropped him down to the beach every afternoon after school and his dad would drive him to contests up and down the coast every weekend. After a few years surfing became full time and Todd was competing at an elite level, travelling the globe competing and doing photo shoots. Todd built an image gaining him sponsors and publicity in magazines. He worked for his sponsor as team manager and combining that and his income he received from magazine exposure he was living the dream. By the time Todd reached his early twenties Todd left competitive surfing and took a job with his old man, but after a few years with a steady income and comfortable career at his feet he got the itch to chase the waves again and left the 9 to 5 grind of Sydney and headed to California where he had a job lined up with world champ long boarder Josh Baxter “Son of Jackie Baxter, pipeline pioneer” teaching surfing. “I spent the whole summer with Josh, I felt fit, healthy and I was making people smile, after that I knew I wanted to teach for the rest of my life!” When Todd got home he contacted his close friend and fellow competitor Blake Johnston for a job at his surf school ‘Cronulla Surfing Academy’. He has been working there ever since.” I’ve learnt a lot teaching for Blake over the years which has helped me to get where I am today” Over the last year Todd has been building his own school ‘Cronulla Stand Up Paddleboard School.’ Teaching Standup Paddle boarding the new craze from Hawaii everyone is talking about. “Dane Wilson my friend ‘pro long boarder’ Got me into standup paddle boarding originally to help me strengthen my core to assist in helping my back problems. After a few sessions I formed a passion for it as the physical benefits were 34
ShineSUMMER2010
so great and it was so enjoyable. Dane had the idea for a school a few years ago but had other commitments, as I was already teaching surfing at the time, I decided why not start teaching paddle boarding as well, which lead me into starting the school.” said Todd. “These days I am still surfing when I can, but mainly Paddle boarding as I am focusing on getting people out there trying StandUp Paddle boarding and building my business.” “I don’t get a lot of surfs in but when I am teaching paddle boarding I am on the board too so it makes it really fun to teach.” “We take some really nice scenic trails and conduct different flat water classes to suit the individual, such as leisure paddles, adventure paddles, men’s and ladies fitness classes and also kids classes after school, so there is something for everyone and you can be any age or fitness level. Paddle boarding is very open to a large variety of people.” Todd is looking forward to the summer with lots of Paddle boarding classes already underway. If you would like any further information for Stand Up Paddle boarding don’t hesitate to contact Todd Mingramm. Phone: 0400 085 823 Website: www.cronullasup.com.au
A quick 9 with Todd Mingramm 1.You obviously like the ocean being a surfer all your life, what makes you keep at it? It makes me feel happy, I love being out there, it brings me back to reality and reminds me what really matters in life. 2. What’s your typical day involve? I usually have lessons in the morning and throughout the day, I usually go to Yoga or for a surf between classes. At night I am cooking dinner with my girl, hanging out or playing music.
Muz & Hardos Fishing Tips Reds on the reef Late spring and early summer is a great time of the year to hit some of the deeper reefs out of the hacking and target snapper. Snapper will bite through out the day but your time is definitely better spent fishing tide changes or early morning and late afternoon, combine the two and you can’t go wrong. Our last few trips chasing reds have been at a place called Rockets Reef, it lies in 90mtrs of water south of the hacking and links up to lots of scattered reef all the way down to Stanwell, depths vary from 40mtrs to 90mtrs. A quality sounder is essential in finding good schools of reds, as is time on the water, we consider ourselves as amateurish when it comes to red fishing. Rigs vary quite a bit so it pays to try a few things, standard paternoster rigs run with snapper snatchers and mullet strips are pretty good, if conditions allow you can anchor and float baits down like pillys or use some heavier style soft plastic jigs, a little burley is required for this method. So what are you waiting for, enjoy the summer and get out there amongst it Good luck and tight lines. Muz & Hardo Muz and Hardo
3. How did you get into SUP (Stand Up Paddle Boarding)? My friend Dane Wilson introduced me to it! Thanks Willow. 4. What’s your favourite surf/paddle spot? I have a few semi secret spots around home. 5. Do you do any other type of training to keep you fit? Bikram Yoga 6. Any advice to someone looking to start SUP? Start off in the flat water, build up your strength and technique before hitting the waves. Get lessons from a qualified instructor and don’t be scared to ask for advice. 7. Stepping out of the water and off the sand what
Mind over Matter
Understanding “The Vibe”, by Matt Griggs To begin to grasp this widely used phrase we first need to understand what “The mind” and what “matter” actually are. Most people have reduced the concept of mind to a physical process of brain. The mind is not your brain! Your brain is an organic computer associated with running the physical body, thinking and storing (usually misperceptions) as memory. This is the lesser Kelee and the lesser part of you. The true nature of your mind is a spiritual process found in the Greater Kelee (an electro-chemical field of energy that is the vessel for your soul). It is associated with the feeling process and your true spiritual nature, the greater part of you. The energy of your spirit has a baseline vibration. Matter in the material world also consists of vibratory rates – energy and information. So the communication between the two calls for an understanding of vibratory rates. This goes beyond the capacity of the five physical senses and into your feeling sense (or sense of perception). Developing a still mind through Kelee Meditation will open up your 6th sense (sense of perception) and open your mind to the relationship between mind and matter. Matt Griggs is a performance coach and teacher of Kelee Meditation. Classes and private sessions are available weekly. Go to mattgriggs.com.au for more articles, information, or to book time with Matt. else rocks your boat? Music, if I am not working on my own music I’m usually going to gigs. 8. Do you want to share with us your favourite foods that keep your energy up whilst paddling or surfing? Lots of protein like Chicken and fish... brown rice and veggies! My favourite of all time is Brown rice sushi. Home made of course. 9. What are you plans with your Stand Up Paddle Board School? I have a lot of plans for the coming summer, new trails, different types of classes, kids day camps and constantly working towards getting Standup Paddleboarding out there in Sydney. ShineSUMMER2010

baby buzz
Introducing solids When is my baby ready? The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend that babies are exclusively breastfed until 6 months of age. If your baby is bottle-fed, you should give her formula based on cow’s milk for the first 6 months, unless otherwise recommended by your GP or health professional. Over the years, there has been great variation in advice regarding when to introduce solids. Reasons for introducing solids earlier included increasing baby’s weight gains and making the baby sleep through the night. Research has shown that babies won’t necessarily sleep any longer on solids than on an adequate feed of milk. Babies who start solids later have less chance of being allergic or intolerant to foods as their systems are more developed and are ready to take a variety of foods. The fact that there is a higher incidence of foodrelated allergies and obesity in our society may also be attributed to inappropriate infant feeding. At around 6 months your baby will let you know when

she is ready for extra foods. Your baby may be ready if she: • can hold her head up • no longer has the tongue thrust reflex • makes chewing motions • sits up well • shows interest in what you are eating • seems unsatisfied, even after extra milk feeds Like walking and talking, babies will start solids when they are developmentally ready. Learning to
relax
Looking after a family is hectic, children pick up on our emotions no matter how small and their behaviour becomes our reflection, so to relax we need to teach our children to relax. Start by turning the T.V. off - energy levels will drop immediately; help find more stimulating and challenging activities to engross the kids. Simply taking deep breathes for one minute will take the edge off any bodily stresses, it teaches kids to calm down and listen to their bodies. Light exercise stretches like yoga are designed to loosen the body and mind; kids will enjoy animal stretches
like downward dog, cats pose and standing earthly like a mountain or tree. Meditation requires you to relax before you can reflect spiritually, to teach a child this you need to start small. At sleep time take 3 deep breaths with your child, insist on total quiet, in time they will enjoy being on their own and learn to recognise their personality. If mediation is not your thing then get back to nature, whether it be in the back yard, going for a walk or going to the beach, appreciate what Mother Nature has to offer you everyday. bookworm CHANGE YOUR THINKING
– Sarah Edelman $32.95 CHANGE YOUR THINKING demonstrates how we tend to respond to stressful events with self-defeating thoughts and behaviours. It explains how it is within our ability to interrupt and challenge these patterns and change habitual responses. Learning to recognise when negative perceptions contribute to stressful situations and how to dispute these thoughts can lead to much greater personal contentment and a sense of control. The methods outlined in CHANGE YOUR THINKING are based on the principles of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), the standard psychological technique used by therapists. It brings these principles within the grasp of the non-specialist and shows how to apply them to deal with such difficult emotions as anger, depression, anxiety and guilt.

Furry friends that squeak & squirm
Guinea pigs are good pets, they are small animals with a life expectancy of five years. Their front teeth keep growing and they chew hard food to stop their teeth getting too long. Guinea pigs love the company of other guinea pigs and it is best to keep females together for company, rather than two or more males. Feeding your guinea pigs
Guinea pig pellet food can be bought from the pet shop. Guinea pigs should also be fed hay, fresh fruits such as apples, pears, peaches, strawberries and vegetables such as broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. Guinea pigs need fresh water too. Housing your guinea pigs
A hutch for your guinea pigs should be large enough for the animals to move freely about inside. It should be well ventilated and have a solid bottom. A cardboard or wooden box with an open bottom and a hole cut in the side should be placed inside the cage as a place where a frightened guinea pig can hide. Bedding can be

a layer of ink-free paper or shredded cardboard with hay on top, but it must be changed often. Guinea pigs need plenty of exercise and should have a safe playpen area. It can be joined onto the cage or the guinea pigs can be taken to it each day. Guinea pigs, like most pets, enjoy the company of people and depend on their owners for food, protection and shelter. Before becoming a pet owner think carefully about all the things you will have to do to care for your pet responsibly. by Melisa George

Get the facts on business &
climate change
Climate change is an issue that everyone’s aware of, and Australian businesses are increasingly choosing to take action themselves rather than wait for governments to come up with a solution. DYB Environmental is a firm based out of Caringbah that helps people do just that. DYB helps small and medium size businesses to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and find simple, achievable ways to reduce them.
“People seem to be intimidated by the scale of the problem” says DYB founder Mike Coster “but in reality its so fixable. Most businesses can offset their Greenhouse gas emissions and become carbon neutral for less than the price of sending a rep to a trade show”. Mike’s approach is to visit businesses that want to become carbon neutral and identify where they can make savings. After that he helps them to offset their remaining emissions by supporting projects such as forest restoration or renewable energy. These projects get funding by trading or selling the rights to carbon they draw from the atmosphere. “There’s a lot of confusion around the idea of emissions offsets and people naturally want to feel sure they are supporting projects that genuinely counter climate change. One way to do this is to ensure that businesses only use emissions offsets from reputable sources , certified using well regulated international standards”. DYB have a website at carbonneutralaustralia.com that provides a range of in depth discussions of the issues around climate change and how to make sure your home or business is doing it’s part.

Brighten up your day
with Bouganvillea The flamboyant colour of bougainvillea in the garden is hard to go past and will brighten up your day. You don’t need to live in a tropical climate to grow colourful tropical flowers like bouganvillea. This plant is a vining variety that sports a profusion of colourful, paper-like blossoms that can bloom yearround. Colours range from yellow to pink to vibrant carmine and gorgeous royal purple. The bouganvillea is very vigorous, it’s an evergreen plant and you can prune it to your heart’s content to make it suitable for hanging baskets, flower pots, or in your garden soil.

Which fragrance will you choose today? Have you ever noticed how overextending yourself tends to bring unwanted pressure into your life? We tend to busy ourselves in order to gain more, find acceptance among peers, land a better position, and gain riches of all kinds. Perhaps we live under the illusion that having such riches is what makes a person complete, content, and deliriously happy.Yet, when we discover that’s not the case, we’re often left feeling empty, with a negative attitude and unhappy. Negative attitudes are like the stench of spoiled milk, permeating our lives and affecting everyone we come in contact with. Think about some of these negative attitudes that might make you stinky: complaining, selfish, prideful, bitter, or unforgiving. Do any ring true with you today? 54

Now imagine a pleasing aroma. What comes to mind? A freshly baked cake, the scent of the ocean, brewed coffee, or maybe a candle. A pleasant aroma is so powerful that it can bring a smile to our faces and make us feel more positive. The same is true of our positive attitudes. In our relationships we can be like a fragrant aroma by adopting attitudes that please and reflect happiness. Consider these happy attitudes: thankful, humble, generous, gracious, kind, and cheerful. Which fragrance will you choose today? Our attitude provides an accurate litmus test for the true condition of our hearts. By Robyn Lindsay What is the posture of your heart today? The Tea Room
Queen Victoria Building There is nothing better than sitting down with my mother and enjoying a nice cup of freshly brewed herbal tea and sampling one of her tasty slices or cakes with the table set on her sunny back veranda to catch up. Being avid tea drinkers we like to brew our teas and have discovered some great teas over the years however nothing beats the selection at The Tea Room at the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney. The Tea Room preserves a rich tradition using the highest quality single estate loose leaf teas and tisanes sourced from the finest growing regions of the world - China, India, Japan, Sri-Lanka, Taiwan and Africa. Unlike most loose-leaf teas, which are blends from many estates, their single estate teas guarantee the purest expression of flavour, place and quality. Over the years we have done the rounds of the High Tea offerings in Sydney and The Tea Room gets our pick. Served on an authentic British three tiered
stand with Royal Albert china the selection of sweets and savories is delicious combining this with your tea of choice in luxurious surroundings that celebrate the cultural significance of the historic Queen Victoria Building Ballroom. The Tea Room QVB is located on Level 3, North End Queen Victoria Building 455 George Street Sydney. For more information or to make a booking click on www.thetearoom.com.au.You won’t be disappointed. money matters
comes from taking control
and focus on looking inwards. Ask yourself; what excites me? what am I passionate about? and what would I like to do more of? Once you have determined how you wish to lead your life, only then move to design financial strategies to fund this lifestyle. Remember, money is nothing but an enabler, enabling us to fund our chosen lifestyles. We also need to accept that life is a journey and we should enjoy the journey, after all, life’s not a race to an end! Financial happiness comes from taking control, setting a path to help you achieve what’s most important to you. And don’t forget to enjoy and celebrate small milestones and achievements along the way. Take control, set a path and choose happiness. By Robert Gothard - Certified Financial Planner TM
Happiness in money matters comes from knowing we are in control, on the right path and managing our financial resources so we can live life according to what we value most. In planning investment strategies, start by putting aside all financial and investment details and statements

Remember: the only beautiful tan is one from a bottle, so fake it! After exfoliating your whole body, concentrating on tricky areas like ankles, elbows and knees, apply self-tan like Natio’s Self Tan Mousse $17.95. With the easy-application style and quick-dry formulas you’ll be a bronzed beauty in no time. Skincare experts all agree – the sun is our number one enemy when it comes to ageing. Unprotected exposure to the sun over long periods can cause fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, & uneven tone, all signs of premature ageing. Fight back and protect yourself with a quality SPF that protects from both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays. Summer is all about minimalism when it comes to product – heavy, thick and complicated products have no place in your beauty bag. Go for triple-duty products like tinted sunscreen, which means moisture, sun protection & coverage all-in-one! Try True Solutions Tinted All Day Moisture, SPF 30 $60
Beauty Lies Not Only Within by Beauty Editor Jacquie Hocking
Summer is here and it’s time to glow! Follow these expert tips to avoid common beauty blunders during the summer months and you’ll shine as bright as our long summer days… With a lot of our focus on body & face in summer, it’s important not to neglect your tresses! Hair often suffers during the summer months as we spend lazy days in chlorinated pools and at the beach. Counteract any damage with a weekly at-home deep conditioning mask and prevent damage by using quality solar protection products like Revlon’s Equave $24.95 (pictured). According to Kystle Wigley, owner of Unique Hair Resort, this genius spray-in “contains extracts of grape, green tea & gingko biloba which are powerful “natural” anti oxidants that act as an active defense against sun exposure, sea salt and chlorine”.
Summer makeup should be fresh, light and fun! Skip the heavy eye-liner and thick powders and instead opt for waterproof mascara, a slick of gloss or a bright summer lipstick. Faux-glow is essential! Use a big round brush to apply bronzer to areas where the sun would naturally fall, try Natio Mineral Pressed Power Bronzer, $19.95. ShineSUMMER2010

Buy a Loved One a Charity Gift This year why not buy a loved one a present with a difference - after all, how many pairs of socks does someone need? Charity Gifts are a great way to show someone you care, and also provide help to those in need of it the most. From just $10 you can buy a unique gift for a loved one that is guaranteed to bring a smile, and also have a long lasting affect - they really are gifts that keep on giving. Remember each gift will go to those all around the world who really need help. www.charitygifts.com.au
ITS ALL ABOUT SMILING Smiling triggers ‘feel-good’ chemicals in our brain and it makes us feel happy. It is easy to smile, so do it as often as possible. In fact, it takes twice as many muscles to frown as it does to smile. There doesn’t even need to be a reason to smile. Try it!
Pets make you happy If you are looking for something to make you happy, consider adopting a pet. There’s nothing like having a soft, silky cat curl up on your lap while you watch TV, or patting the fat warm belly of a sleeping puppy. Or if you don’t want a pet full time why not become a volunteer…
