Is my BODY trying to tell me
Something?
Our bodies can show signs of nutritional deficiencies and imbalance well before a blood test can. Quite often, dietary adjustments can correct the problem - sometimes, we need a little extra help.
c White spots on the nails - Zinc c Mouth ulcers - Vitamin B12, Folic acid c White coating on tongue - Acidity c Dry scaly skin - Essential fatty acids, Vitamin A c Weak brittle nails - Iron, Calcium, Essential fatty acids c Cramps, eyelid twitches - Magnesium, Calcium c Easy bruising - Vitamin C, Vitamin K We can help identify and correct your nutritional deficiency/ imbalance so your body works and feels better. This may be as simple as including certain foods in your day, eating particular foods together, or avoiding substances that may exacerbate a deficiency.

welcome
to Shine Magazine Issue 24
Welcome to Spring. We’ve made it through both a physical, fiscal and psychological winter. Spring has been famous throughout the ages for heralding in a new and more positive season. Hello Spring! We can’t wait till we can get back into the ocean wetsuit free! There is a whole heap of great events happening in and around Cronulla. See our community notice board on pages 7 & 8 for a taste of what to expect. To leave the winter blues behind, make your way down to Cronulla Plaza in September to the Cronulla Spring Festival. The festival is much loved by locals and visitors alike. Held over two days, there is something for everyone – food, fashion, art, accessories and surf wear. Discounted cossies are always popular but be quick because the best ones always go on Saturday! A favourite among families is Kids Corner. There will be magic shows, face painting, clowns and music. That's all before the urge to go on a ride or the need for fairy floss takes hold! Coinciding with the Spring Fair are free health and wellbeing classes held in Munro Park. Go along and enjoy some Yoga, Zumba, Pilates and Reiki. Another big event for locals will be the Cronulla High School 50 year reunion and celebrations. Is it that long ago that I ventured into a high school surrounded by towering sand hills? Don’t forget Fathers Day coming up on September 4 with a chance to spoil Dad. Welcome to Shine and the theme of this issue: It’s a good life! All the best,

serve of health
What do we mean by everyday healthy living - having the energy to keep up with the kids? Being more productive at work? Avoiding colds and flu's? Well, it is all of these, and much more...it can be a delicate balancing act some days to eat nutritious food, drink enough water, get in a workout, sleep soundly. Some times you may find you achieve these effortlessly, and some days it's all too much! What we do about 80% of the time is what counts, so don't beat yourself up if some days you haven't eaten enough vegetables. But it is worthwhile reminding ourselves how well we feel when our diet is good, the body has been moving and the mind is refreshed - those days we feel like we could move mountains! It's that kind of wellness and health that helps us keep up with our busy lives and enjoy the ride. So where do we begin? Well the shopping trolley is as good a place as any. 1. Most supermarket aisles are best avoided (you know the ones I mean). Stick to fresh produce to make salads, stir-fry's, baked and steamed veggies, and team up with good quality protein - legumes, eggs, lean red meat, chicken, turkey, fish and seafood, nuts and seeds, ricotta, cottage and fetta cheeses, greek yoghurt. 2. Keep to low GI grains such as oats/porridge, natural/untoasted muesli, basmati or doongarra rice, wholemeal pasta, grainy or rye breads. 3. Choose organic, low caffeine teas and coffee, dandelion and other herbal teas, sparkling mineral water (unflavoured, but nice mixed with fresh lemon or lime or sparkling apple juice). 4. When buying packaged products like sauces, dressings etc, choose brands with no added sugar - yes, 6
Shinemagazine2011
even mustard has added sugar! Most tinned tomato products are fine and have the benefit of containing lycopene (an antioxidant). 5. Get the body moving as much as you can - golf, gardening, house cleaning, walking, boxing, dancing, swimming, yoga - anything that helps build strong bones, keeps the heart and lungs pumping, and helps clear the head of clutter. Consider hiring a piece of exercise equipment for home - even 15min on a treadmill every morning is beneficial. Living everyday well is a conscious decision - we need to listen and plan a little for what our body is telling us it needs, and at times, that may be a good lie down and rest! But just like our cars and homes, our bodies need regular attention - after all, they are going to keep us going for 80 plus years. By harnessing all the good things in life, you will experience the energy and strength and positivity that comes with inner health. Eat what you know to be nutritious, allow yourself 7-8 hours sleep/night, enjoy some huffy-puffy (yes, the bedroom variety included!), and surround yourself with people and activities that put a smile on your face, and give a warm glow in your heart. Imagine this simple warning sign visible in arenas where important RELATIONSHIPS reside, such as, family homes, office, or social/ sporting venues. An Interview
with a Yogi
Australia is the next big destination for yoga and Nathan Dennett is spreading the feel good energy of Bikram Yoga. Beginning as a primary school teacher, Nathan started his yoga career on the wrong side of a car crash. This accident propelled him into a future of yoga when dragged into a Bikram Yoga studio unwilling and still encumbered. He thought yoga was: "chanting old hippies twisting into pretzels”. Nothing prepared him for the experience which "released everything done by and since the accident. I immediately felt what yoga could do for me." Bikram Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga. It is a sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises performed in a heated room for 90 minutes that make it unique.
The ability to breathe, stay calm and centred during challenging situations is a valuable tool in life. This is what we learn from Bikram Yoga.
In modern life, stress is a major factor in many diseases on a global scale. Nathan is taking all this back to primary schools with his children's Yoga program,Yoga Frogs. The Yoga practise allows children to develop life skills such as patience, honesty, dedication, commitment and fearlessness as well as helping self esteem and self health. Nathan combines his passions of education and personal health into the future well being for both adults and children. Through his Bikram Yoga and Yoga Frogs studios he is extending the capacity for yoga to create happy, healthy families.

Strong people
stay young As we advance in age, loss of muscle bulk and tone – called Sarcopenia – is a fact of nature. You can see stomachs bulge, flesh hang from upper arms, and even knees look bigger than thighs. Many people consider these changes a natural product of middle age. All Medical researchers from around the world agree that Sarcopenia can not only be minimized but reversed! Sarcopenia is a process which begins around the late 30’s and often does not become obvious until we are in our late 60’s and 70’s. There are two mechanisms that cause muscles to contract. The first is where the nerve endings attach to the muscle to convey impulses into the muscle that start the muscle contracting. The other is the contracting mechanism which is caused by different filaments which lie side by side in the muscle fibres. Quite simply, it is a case of “Use it or lose it”! Very slowly, over the years, Sarcopenia progresses
so that those who adopt a sedentary lifestyle progressively degenerate with age. Scientific studies show that those who exercise regularly have more energy and enjoy a more active lifestyle, with improved strength, while their sedentary contemporaries find themselves getting weaker, tire easily, and enjoy life a lot less. The most effective way of combating Sarcopenia is by light weight-training using hand-held dumbbells and ankle weights. DOUBLE THE AGE, TWICE THE STRENGTH. Southside Physiotherapy conduct personalized exercise groups targeting the over 50’s, designed by physiotherapists and conducted by exercise leaders.

Is it a Good Life? Adam Hartup speaks about ‘GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM’ a subject that divides the nation on the rights of refugees. Everyone has their own interpretation of what a ‘Good Life’ is, some of it’s taken for granted, others strive for wealth and materialistic things and for the less fortunate it is about having a chance at life, a life without fear, a place to call home and security. I caught up with Adam Hartup, a local Cronulla Lifeguard who just arrived back from a 25-day life changing adventure tracing in reverse the journeys that refugees have taken to reach Australia. Adam was one of six ordinary Australians that agreed to challenge their preconceived notions about refugees and asylum seekers and travel to some of the most dangerous and desperate corners of the world. This groundbreaking SBS documentary series took me personally on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows and left me questioning about what is right and wrong. Adam describes how he knew nothing about the trip he was about to embark on as everything was under lock and key. “They took my passport, wallet and phone, all my security and the things I rely on for everyday life,” said Adam. Part of the plan guide Dr. David Corlett (who has worked with refugees and asylum seekers for over two decades as a caseworker, researcher and advisor) administered was to have them feel just like a refugee. In taking this life changing journey Adam knew this would broaden his views and give him a first hand understanding on what refugees and asylum seekers engage in for a better life. The group experienced first hand boarding a leaky refugee boat and being rescued mid-ocean, immigration raids in Malaysia, life in a Kenyan refugee camp and a visit to slums of Jordan, ultimately making 14
Shinemagazine2011
it to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Iraq, protected by the UN Peacekeepers and the US Military. Before embarking on this journey Adam had a zero tolerance for asylum seekers and experienced the Cronulla riots first hand so his views have changed from his initial thoughts that these people should be sent back to where they came from. However when the shoe was on the other foot and experiencing a similar life to those less fortunate he now believes if it were him, he would jump on the boat for a chance at a better life. I asked Adam to sum up his 25-day journey. he said “I am a way better person with more compassion and hope to change peoples point of view and if I can achieve that and help bring awareness to what is happening this is a good start”. For the immediate time Adam has been dealing with the media frenzy about ‘GO BACK’ and has been overwhelmed with the positive response via his facebook and twitter social networking sites. One day he hopes to ‘GO BACK’ and help out and perhaps facilitate a sports camp program for the kids to give them happiness, better times and a good life. Moving
with the flow of time Matthieu Ricard, Buddhist monk & author of “Happiness- A Guide to developing life’s most important skill”, refers to a GOOD LIFE as being one where there is a regular experience of being in a state of flow of time. Meaning, some of the things we choose to spend our time on, absorb our full attention to the point where time, ego, & physical needs can be temporarily ignored. The secret to this absorption is that we choose to engage in activities that are challenging enough to pull on our talents & skills. Too much of the mundane and unchallenging and we loose the flow to boredom. Too much or too difficult and we loose the flow to anxiety. When we are absorbed by an activity that puts us in a flow, if we receive a sense of satisfaction on its completion, it can be said to be an optimal experience of living the good life. Ricard expands this concept to say this process is just a tool in itself. “To make any long-term improvement
“A Good Life is one that is characterized by complete absorption in what one does” in our quality of life, it must be imbued with human qualities, such as, altruism and wisdom. The value of flow depends on the motivation colouring the mind.” I believe as with any skill we improve with the practice of it. This is about deciding to make the most of the capacity of our minds and therefore how we eventually express who we are into the world at any given moment, rather than defaulting to morose indifference or it being too hard. Ultimately, what the experience of flow can bring us is a source of inner peace and openness to the world and others. The everyday diet for children Parents often express concern that their child may not be attentive at school, find it hard to concentrate, has problems with their bowels, suffers regular respiratory infections, or looks pale at times. Getting the basics right can make all the difference 1. Is a nutritious, protein-rich breakfast on the menu? Nuts and seeds with unsweetened yoghurt, porridge with almond meal, baked beans or eggs with low GI bread. These will keep your child 'switched' on, focused, attentive. 2. Are breakfast cereals and juice a regular part of their breakfast? These are too high in sugar (natural and added) and will not sustain them through to lunch. Eventually these foods will also contribute to weight problems. 3. White bread/vegemite, and muesli/fruit bar for lunch? Not ideal. They will struggle to stay focused, and will feel hungry soon after eating. 4. Snacks to enjoy - grainy crackers with philly cheese, apple with nut spread, popcorn with iodised salt, raw
veggies with hummus dip, baked sweet potato chips. 5. Dinner time is a great to enjoy veggie soups. Try to include salmon, sardines, and any other seafood they enjoy (eg prawns) - as part of a pasta sauce or on a wholemeal pizza. Virgin olive oil in dressings, and non-animal protein for variety - eg lentil shepherds pie, bean nachos. 6. Getting the right fluids in? Water, (very) diluted fruit juice, some milk, smoothies, veggie juices all have their healthy place in a child's diet. Drinking milk everyday is NOT essential. For fussy eaters, please see our website for more ideas Eating well everyday will make a huge difference to your child's health - often their behaviour improves, they are sick less often, they cope better at school, and we seriously reduce their risk of obesity and diabetes. For individual advice for your child's health, please contact Christine Youssef, Naturopath, Health in our Hands 9501 0326

Timeless Health Whether we have acupuncture to increase our energy, for fertility and pregnancy support, or for relaxation, it is with no doubt one of the best and oldest forms of both fundamental and specialist health care. Coreena Willoughby is a local Oriental Health Practitioner who has been practicing in the Shire for the past 7 years. She runs a busy practice specialising in acupuncture for fertility, pregnancy, facial rejuvenation, stress relief, pain relief, and children’s no-needles treatments. Acupuncture offers a safe, effective and drug free way to address all concerns with IVF and fertility support for male and female, pregnancy support, labour preparation, labour induction, pain relief during labour and post-partum recovery. A study undertaken by the University of Adelaide fertility clinic “Repromed” in 2006, indicates that Acupuncture can be safely integrated with your medical treatment, and can impart emotional balance, self-confidence and well-being during this time – to help improve your chances of success. The study found fertility rates during embryo transfer can be

Spring in the Snowy Mountains Looking for the longest runs, largest ski area and highest lifts in the Southern Hemisphere? With four ski resorts and Australia’s highest peak, the Snowy Mountains offer stunning alpine terrain for new and experienced skiers alike. Here’s the lowdown on each resort. PERISHER Perisher combines the resources and facilities of Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Mount Blue Cow, Guthega, The Station and the Ski tube alpine railway. It is the largest snow resort operation in the southern hemisphere. It also has the greatest number of ski lifts all located in the highest terrain. For something completely different, Perisher’s Roof Top of Australia Tour supplies you with a pair of snow shoes and a gourmet lunch to experience the snowfields on foot. Perisher’s First Tracks program also allows a few lucky skiers to be escorted up the mountain to enjoy the day’s first snow at sunrise. THREDBO Just below the snowy dome of Mt Kosciuszko, skiers reach the top of Karel’s T-Bar and look across the tops of the mountains to Victoria. Clipping in their boots, they push off the lip into the Vista run and explore the best that Thredbo has to offer. Nearly 700m below, is Thredbo, a village that attracts mountain bikers
and trekkers in summer and, in winter, skiers and boarders from all over the world looking for a great, all-round snow experience. Head out for a night riding experience on Thursday and Saturday evenings until 7:30pm under floodlights. Best of all, this is free for boarders after 4:30pm. CHARLOTTE PASS Charlotte Pass is Australia’s highest ski resort, and with a fraction of the visitors, it offers a unique introduction to the heritage listed Australian Alps. Completely snowbound at the top of Australia, this pristine alpine resort has sweeping views of Mt Kosciuszko and the main range, and offers some of the country’s best skiing. Charlotte Pass is only accessible by over-snow vehicles, from Perisher Terminal. SELWYN SNOWFIELDS Over the last 45 years Selwyn Snowfields has grown from a one lift operation to a sophisticated resort with 11 lifts, ski & clothing hire centre, specialised snow sports school programs, and top of the range snow making system that covers 80 per cent of the mountain and top class facilities that can cater for up to 2000 people every day. Today Selwyn Snowfields is a familyfriendly destination giving thousands of skier’s access to 45 hectares of snow-covered terrain. When Selwyn Snowfields started in the 1960s, tickets were sold from a duffel bag and tins of pineapple juice were the only refreshments offered to skiers. Shinemagazine2011

my street
Greenhills Street
Greenhills It is unusual that My Street would review a street that does not exist (as yet), but given the public interest in the newly established suburb of Greenhills north of Cronulla, we thought it timely. Shine blissfully drove into the project to research Greenhills Street. My advice: don’t! We were met by large men in hard hats waving us away from what is at the moment a large construction site. A better vantage point is the viewing platform midway along a walking track from the Wanda car park to the Heritage sand Dune. Greenhills is traditionally referred to as the stretch of beach in Bate Bay to the north of Wanda Beach. Bate Bay houses Sydney's longest beach at 4.8 km in length with the wilderness of the Greenhills Beach and dunes in the north. The beach sweeps in an arc beginning at Pimelwi Rocks at Boat Harbour, through Greenhills and along the patrolled areas of Wanda, Elouera and North Cronulla. The northern 3.5 km is called Greenhills after the once green sand dunes. With a designated "dog off leash area", the beach offers the family dog an opportunity to get its feet wet. Greenhills is an ideal location not only for sunbathing but also for taking a dip in the ocean. Surfers know that the long beach from North Cronulla to Greenhills offers wave heights and crowds gradually decreasing to the north. A major attraction of the northerly beach is 20

Some Facts about the Greenhills Beach Land Release: • In the first release, there are approximately 33 blocks of land for sale in the new addresses of Greenhills St, Torquay Rd and Whitehaven Rd • The blocks range from 550m2 to 736m2 • The prices range from high $700,000s to early $800,000s • The main access road will be from Captain Cook Drive • There will be 7 kms of bike tracks, 4 kms of walking trails • There will be 10 sports and playing fields Includes 91ha of public open space, bushland, parks and reserves the lack of crowds. Australand recently opened their new display office in Cronulla Mall for the new land release. With a hammock in the window, Australand is promoting the laid back Cronulla lifestyle. Lots went on sale August 13th, 2011. The true lifestyle value of Greenhills Beach lies in the fact that despite being a brand new suburb, it is situated in one of Sydney’s most established areas. From Greenhills Beach residential area: Greenhills Beach shoreline is 400m. Wanda Surf Life Saving Club is 1km. Cronulla Golf Course is 1km. Cronulla Leagues Club is 2km. Cronulla retail precinct is 2.5km. Cronulla train station is 2.7km For a lifestyle far from the maddening crowd, head north. Larry Jamieson

play Create an Experience with the Art of Cooking Teaching children how to cook is as important as eating together as a family and eating healthy delicious food. Cooking is a necessary life skill, teaching children the process of cooking allows them to understand the steps from the farm, shop, chopping board to the plate. Make the process easy by picking a simple recipe, before you start to cook read the recipe a couple of times and familiarise yourself. Create an experience by making a shopping list, going shopping and buying the ingredients. prepare the ingredients, utensils and area before you begin to ensure you have your attention with your child at all times whilst cooking. Talking through each step with your child will help them to stay involved and focused. name each ingredient, tell them more information about the ingredient and the cooking process. Create excitement with each step e.g. Mashing, cracking, mixing. Allow enough time to cook and eat, eating what you have made gives great satisfaction- a bonding experience you both share. Soon enough this act of giving and sharing will become addictive.

Post natal
health
Post-birth recovery is recovery not only from birth but from the experience of being pregnant and growing a baby for 9 months. Post-natal care is not commonly discussed, although all mothers will be impacted by the extra demands on their bodies following pregnancy and childbirth. Some women will naturally bounce back, full of vigour and vitality, while others will struggle to recapture pre pregnancy health. There are a number of circumstances that may impede a women’s natural capacity for healthy birth recovery. A woman may have experienced birth trauma or medical complications and intervention, multiple birth, previous miscarriage(s), pregnancies too close together, be an older mother or have inadequate post-natal support. These factors, combined with blood loss and the enormous energy demands of labour, the sleep deprivation and disruption of tending a newborn and the continuing loss of body fluids via breast milk, can all affect a mother’s recuperation once the euphoria of childbirth passes. Treatment during the postnatal period is always aimed at supporting the mother. It tends to be gentle, nourishing, warming and toning. It can also assist with the less physical symptoms associated with adapting to the new responsibilities of motherhood. These can range from tiredness, fatigue and exhaustion, fluctuating emotions, sleep disturbance, general malaise and mild post-natal depression. After birth, food can also support post natal health and wellness. Women are advised to avoid cold, raw food and fluid and take nourishing, warming, slow cooked food such as chicken soup. Post-natal dieting for weight loss is never recommended because it can further weaken the body, increase the risk of complications and result in serious health problems in later years. Steam baths and externally applied herbal washes can promote healing, alleviate perineal discomfort and swelling, and may prevent infection from surgical wounds and episiotomy stiches. The ability of a woman’s body to conceive, grow, birth and nurture a baby is truly a miracle of nature. All women need to make informed choices on how to support themselves during their postnatal recovery. 28

The Journey Through Youth
part 2
Stress and anxiety is generally accepted as an every day occurrence in life. It acts like an alarm bell that reminds us of our values. The things we feel are important in our lives motivate us to be protective of them. We then work harder to achieve our goals and aspirations. Adolescence is often associated with an increase in stress and anxiety. It is a time when individuals are developing a sense of identity. They become more independent and take on more responsibility as well as managing the demands of academic and vocational pursuits. During these times the volume of that alarm can become louder or more sustained. It is common to observe young people reacting to their stress in ways that conflict with their values. This leads to consequences that pull them further away from achieving their goals. Considering this, it is not
30
Shinemagazine2011
surprising that one in four people aged 16 to 24 experience mental health problems. So how does one successfully master this journey through youth? Become more resilient to life’s stressors by developing psychological skills. Core to this is “Mindfullness”. It is the ability to be able to hit the pause button and consider your thoughts and feelings rather than react under the pressure of distress. Mindfullness helps people manage distressing emotions in a healthy way and direct decision making towards one’s future value oriented goals. Deni Fowle, Principal Psychologist at Youth Inspired, provides a psychological service for adolescents and young people.

men's health
life in it be
Bigger, faster, stronger. Does that make us better, happier?
For many men the pursuit of being better having more, doing more and being more. Striving for excellence means that we will be happier. We believe that the only way to be truly happy is to get as far away as possible from who we currently are. The faster we can get there, the sooner we will reach our goals, the happier we will be. This is how many of us blokes go about making changes in our lives. We feel that being unhappy is a direct reflection of something we don’t have, something we have missed out on. So we make a decision to be happier, to be better. In order to achieve that goal we sometimes think that changing the way we look will make us happier. We hit the gym, push the weights and run the kilometres. If we are bigger, faster, stronger then surely we will be happier – right? Wrong! Happiness is an inside job. It starts from the inside and works its way out. If we are not happy with who we are currently, no amount of muscle can hide that. Being fit and healthy is important for all of us blokes. If getting fit and healthy is about being more effective as a dad, husband or mate - perfect. If getting fit and healthy is being used as a means to make you happier - don’t bother. As blokes, if we really want to be happier the best thing we can do is be happy with whom we currently are. While it is true that no one is perfect, we don’t 32
Shinemagazine2011
need to be perfect in order to be happy. The happiest men are the blokes who don’t hide from themselves. They believe in who they are and what they are trying to achieve. They realise their own faults but are happy anyway. They know what they have and appreciate its significance. Men who take the time to reflect back on what they have done and who feel pride in their achievements, are happier and more satisfied with their lives. For those of us who take the time to enjoy the things we have now, we put ourselves in the best position to feel happy. As blokes, our happiness is in our own hands. It starts with the small things, like enjoying time with our kids; being present and listening when our partners are talking to us; taking the time to enjoy a chat with a good mate. Life is happening all around us at a rapid rate. As blokes, if we don’t stop every now and again to enjoy it, it will pass us by. Happiness is not about having more or being more. Happiness is about what we have now, what we are doing now.
It’s about life. Be in it. For more information about how to be happier and enjoy the life you have now, call Life Resolutions Miranda on (02) 9690 5888. By Joel Curtis, Principal Psychologist Life Resolutions Miranda.
Whiting
Muz & Hardos Fishing Tips
What a great little sportfish the Whiting is. Beautiful on the table and heaps of fun to catch on light gear. The Hacking is home to some exceptional Whiting, and regular catches of fish in the 600-800 gram mark are quite common even occasionally reaching 1kg. Tackle required is kept fairly simple, light 4lb line, a very light running ball sinker onto a swivel, then about 40cm of trace (still 4lb) with a small long shank bait holder hook. Yabbies we think are one of the best baits to use, along with live worms although they can be more difficult to collect. Try fishing the incoming tide over sand flats and around patches where sand meets weed. Drop offs from shallow to slightly deeper water can also produce, as can the areas where you pumped your nippers once the tide rises enough. Dusted in a little flour with salt and pepper then quickly fried in a little oil, they are one of the nicest fish to come out of the estuary.
So grab your jacket and beanie, brave the cold mornings and catch yourself a feed of Whiting.
Tight lines Muz and Hardo

Cronulla Golf Club
Golf in Cronulla goes back to within a few months of the opening of the steam-train service in 1911 and was played on a 6 hole course with the 1st hole behind Cronulla Hotel, heading up the hill to Ocean Street, down and across Elouera Road, with the return journey on the beach side of Elouera Rd. The hotel was used as a clubhouse. This land was eventually set down for sub-division so enthusiasts, keen to form a club, took steps to acquire land between Woolooware and Bate Bays. In 1921 a company was formed and land purchased on the present golf course site. Work then began on construction of a 9 hole course which was officially opened in December 1923. Cronulla Golf Club has
seen a number of developments and improvements over the years, the most recent re-development being 5 stages of a 10 stage masterplan to address safety issues. The 5 new holes are picturesque and challenging. This year, to mark 90 years since the commencement of development of the club, a Seniors Pro Am will be held on 24th and 25th November. This will be a major event for the Sutherland Shire, attracting professional golfers, past major Australian and overseas tournament winners and sports celebrities. The Club is now seeking hole sponsors for this event and information can be obtained by phoning the Club on 9523-6777 and speaking to the General Manager.
Cronulla Golf Club Social and Golfing memberships available.

It's a
Good Life
and now all you need to do is spread the love and good faith that lies within. In this issue of Shine I thought I wouldn’t focus any particular community project and keep in with our theme for this issue, ‘It’s a Good Life’ by prompting you how we can share the GOOD. When was the last time you showed a random act of kindness and not wanted anything back in return? A friend recently told me whilst she was paying for her meal at the McDonalds drive through she decided to pay for the persons behind for no other reason than to stoke them out. Her nephew’s reaction from the back seat of the car was ‘”What did you do that for?” with her reply being, “Because I can.” We all live busy lives we forget about what the ‘Good Life’ is all about and how the smallest gesture can really make a difference to someone else’s day or life. These days we live and breathe on texting, email and facebook and are losing the conversation and personal touch on life.

mums who shine
Leanne with her family, and below ready for action.
Leanne with her driver and observer.
Leanne Campbell Racing toward the World Water Ski Championships. Australia’s top water ski racers are in count down mode after selectors named a powerful team to contest the World Ski Race Championships on the waters of Queensland’s Moreton Bay, September 10 to 18. New South Wales competitors dominate the team. According to ski racing officials, Great Britain, the United States and New Zealand have also named their teams along with Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. After some great racing at the final two Australian Selection races at Redcliffe in Queensland, the Australian team was named for the 2011 World Titles. With many positions coming down to the final race, it was a fantastic series. The women’s F2 team looks particularly strong for Australia, with local Sylvania mum Leanne Campbell and team mates Trudi Stout and Tania Teelow all capable of claiming a victory in this gruelling sport on the day. Leanne’s story is an interesting one. She made a comeback to her sport, water ski racing, after previously being three times Australian Open Women’s Champion some twenty years ago. She came second at two consecutive World Titles (Italy 1989 and Darwin 2001). She retired soon after that 36
Shinemagazine2011
but always continued to ski for fun. Leanne is a Mum to two daughters aged two and eight years. She is also a Step mum to two boys aged eight and ten which keeps her pretty busy. After the birth of her youngest daughter in 2009 Leanne went through a low point in her life. While working through that she recognised a great desire to achieve what had been simmering away inside of her for some time. Knowing that the World Championships in 2011 were to be held here in Australia, Leanne made the decision to have a go at making the Australian Team. Soon after she realised that she wanted to win that world title very badly after having come second twice previously. Her plan and progress have been right on track bringing her to where she is now Number 1 on the Australian F2 team. Life is busy being a Mum and training as an elite athlete. Her desire to win is so strong that she tells me the work is a joy to do and has already turned her life around. She cites a large part of her motivation to setting an example to her children of what you can achieve if you set your mind to it. Leanne intends to work with women to help inspire them to achieve whatever they desire, big or small. Action gets under way at Redcliffe, just east of Brisbane, on September 10.
soul reason
It's a Good life the secret is
contentment Sometimes I think we live under the illusion that having riches in life is what makes us complete, content, and deliriously happy. Contentment is not found in career titles or in the kind of car we own. The pressure to have more and do more can lead us down paths we never intended. In our attempt to fill the vacuum of our empty souls, we discover that external luxury is only a cheap substitution for spiritual wholeness. Finding contentment doesn’t mean we have to like our current situation, but it may require an appreciation for it. The fruit of contentment is developed when we are thankful for what has been provided for us. Peace isn’t the absence of pressure. It’s our attitude toward our provisions in the midst of our stress. By expressing gratitude, we experience the richness of being, not having. You may be in a hard place right now - a job or a
business partnership that feels like a dead end; some of your friendships have soured; the car is too old or the holiday has to be put on hold. You’re not where you planned or hoped to be. A good friend has shown me, the truth is we don’t have to like where we are or what we have, but if we choose to be thankful for our provisions, we’ll experience a level of contentment. Being appreciative sets us free from the desire to have and lets us rest in the riches of contentment. And when we reach a place of contentment, we don’t need earthly riches! by Robyn Lindsay Want to know more about contentment? Visit Caringbah Baptist Church on www.caringbahbaptist.org.au

an example for all!
Robert Gothard
Athletes are often held in high regard and arguably higher than elected leaders! But why? Well, Athletes are perfect illustrations of what one can achieve with focused efforts. An Athletes success is not random nor simply good luck. With the help of a Coach, Athletes set SMART goals and then design training and nutrition plans to achieve success. A SMART goal is one that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Ultimately most of us discover we have limited time, energy and resources, so we need to prioritise and set our own agendas to give us the best chance of achieving what we desire. In a financial sense, it may be owning a home, raising and educating a family or creating wealth for

beauty lies not only within
Jet Set
Beauty It’s easy to be swept up in the excitement of travel – whether it’s a cheeky weekend getaway or a longer overseas adventure. A break away doesn’t mean your beauty régime should suffer though. Pare it back to the basics and enjoy fuss-free holiday fun, while still looking beautiful for holiday snaps! • Preparation is key! Book maintenance appointments in the days before you’re scheduled to go. Waxing, fake tanning and hair colour touch-ups are all best done pre-holiday to maximize fun and relaxation time. The last thing you want is to be looking for a razor while everyone else is sipping cocktails poolside! • In-flight beauty: While not all enjoy the experience of air travel, take a different view and see it for what it is; a blissful time during which you’re uncontactable to the outside world. Slap on a deep hydrator to counteract dehydration, slip on an eye mask, pop your iPod on and catch up on some z’s…
TRAVEL ESSENTIALS Lip balm Hand cream 30+ sunscreen (to double as your moisturizer) Makeup remover wipes (perfect for when you’re on the go) Sleep mask Dry shampoo Nail file Eye Drops A rich body moisturizer Hand-bag sized compact for quick touch-ups Your favourite holiday fragrance – ideally in a travel-size!
• Beauty on the run: Holidays are not the time to be fussing with fiddly makeup application and timeconsuming techniques. Keep it simple! Skip the panda eyes and wear lashes natural – just remember to use a lash curler daily to create the appearance of wide, open eyes perfectly framed by lady like lashes. Shu Uemura Eyelash curler (rrp $40). • We love hard-working products like tinted sunscreen (hydration + coverage + protection in one!), lip-andcheek stains and multi-purpose balms like cult classic Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream (rrp $38) which can be used to revive dry, chapped skin (perfect for lips and hands!) as well as calm redness and skin irritations. Before leaving home, cull your beauty bag and take only those products that will serve a double-duty to minimize the collection you carry with you. • Excess holiday indulgence caused a skin breakout? For a quick-fix spot treatment, simply crush aspirin and mix with a little water, then apply topically to the affected area before sleep. The mix is antibacterial and will also reduce redness. • Finally, don’t neglect your health while you’re away. Many people find they escape on holiday, only to get a cold during the first few days! This is the result of the body dropping its defenses and relaxing…but don’t let it ruin your trip – pack a multivitamin and take daily to boost your body’s vitality.
