welcome

to Shine Magazine Issue 25 Why do we live here? Well, it happened again recently. Prejudice. Because of both my work (publishing) and sport (ocean racing) I seem to spend a lot of time conversing with people who live north of the harbour bridge. They really don’t get it when I explain where I live. Why? They ask. After treating me like a poor cousin who really needs to be educated I find that few of these northern based Sydneysiders have ever ventured south of the airport. It used to irritate me but now I just smile. Although I grew up in Cronulla I spent years living in Europe and the USA. There were many nice places but none were home. I came back to Sydney and Cronulla in particular. Decades later I’m sure I made the right decision. My family are happy, healthy and thriving. The Shire is surrounded by magnificent waterways, from historic Botany Bay in the north, to the world famous beaches in the east and tranquil Port Hacking to the south. There is a strong focus on health and sport in the area with clubs catering for a wide range of activities. The area also boasts many scenic parks. Cronulla is only 20km from the Sydney CBD and well serviced by trains. I’m not the only fan. Cronulla is particularly popular with well known sports figures and a former Prime Minister made it his home in the formative part of his career. Cronulla boasts fantastic restaurants and cafes, many with water views. There are plenty of good schools. But of course I’m preaching to the converted! Shine magazine is currently delivered to every home from the beaches of Cronulla east through Woolooware and Burraneer Bay to Gannon’s Road. So when you get that quizzed look from someone outside The Shire, just smile. Its spring, sit back and enjoy life in a great part of the world. All the best,

boost your brain

Intelligence in action So you want to boost your brain power to stay on top of the ageing brain and compete with the best of them? Here are some well researched facts to get you on your way. Firstly, please consider the theory that your brain has multiple intelligences! If you don’t there will be parts of your brain that may weaken and fail you. This is referred to as Learned Non-Use within the Neuroscientific world of brain plasticity. Here’s the good news! Within each of the proposed seven “Frames of Mind” (Gardner 1983) there is structure and function with a capacity to change and adapt. Each of the seven intelligences must be activated and exercised in order for them to remain viable. Here are those seven faculties and some suggestions to keep them growing. 1. LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL. Practice patterns, logic and reason. Keep working with figures in your brain. Try Suduko! 2. LINGUISTIC. Ongoing mastery of oral expression and memory of spoken and written language will exercise this part of the brain. Learn a foreign language! This includes computer skills. 6

Shinemagazine2011

3. SPATIAL. Recognising & manipulating patterns of spaces. Travel, chess and designing things, anything, will exercise spatial awareness. 4. MUSICAL. The capacity to recognize, compose or perform music. Learn an instrument or simply join a choir and sing. Good for more than just your brain. 5. BODILY- KINESTHETIC. Using your physical self to solve problems or create products. Keep up that dancing. Play golf or any sport. 6. INTERPERSONAL. It is the ability to recognize intentions, feelings and motivations of other people. Exercise it by simple conversation with friends. 7. INTRAPERSONAL. Is the ability to understand oneself and use that information to regulate one’s own life. Practice self reflection and use self awareness. Remember in your efforts to boost your brain power that the brain fatigues. So, rest it by hitting the mental pause button from time to time. Turn down your brains volume by not expecting it to operate on full voltage all of the time. In other words remember to rest. Deena Thompson

Breast Cancer Robin Shoebridge is Getting Fit and Going Places after joining Dragons Abreast. Arriving home from a holiday there is always the catch up phone calls, emails and appointments. For Robin one was a friendly reminder to have a mammogram. With no symptoms and feeling great, Robin was shocked to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. At 67 years of age this wonder woman from Engadine is a wife, mother of two sons and grandmother to three. She is now also a part of the Dragons Abreast Sydney Crew. In 2002 Robin attended a ‘Breast Cancer Luncheon’ to raise money for breast cancer nurses. She picked up a flyer that helped support her through and after breast cancer. During that time the luncheon has grown from 70 to an expected 400 guests this year on Monday 24th October at Doltone House. Phone 9113 2533 to book. Robin meets her paddling buddies at Blackwattle Bay near the Sydney Fish Markets twice per week. They paddle around Sydney Harbour on training days and

There are 20 paddlers in a dragon boat with a sweep. At racing regattas there is also a drummer. The oldest paddler in our club is 73 and the youngest is in her

someone who shines late 20’s. There are over 100 members in the club. Robin laughs “We are all shapes and sizes but each Saturday morning we follow up our training session with coffee and a chat.” Earlier this year some Club members were part of the Great Grand Dragons (GGD) team which participated in the over 60’s division at the Australian National Titles in Canberra. They took home the gold medal. The result proves it is never too late to start something that will give you a new zest for life.

BreastScreen NSW is a free breast x-ray (mammogram) for early detection of breast cancer. Call 13 20 50 for an appointment. No referral is required.

To all you women Robin says; “Please be aware that you are never too young to begin checking your breasts or have a mammogram!” Dragons Abreast helps post-treatment breast cancer patients. A large percentage of women survive breast cancer these days but their transition from patients back into an active life is often difficult. The organisation is highly effective in the management of breast cancer patients. All breast cancer survivors are welcome. There are Dragons Abreast groups all around the country. Call 1300 889 566 or see www. dragonsabreast.com.au to find your nearest group. By Melisa George

Better Brains Your natural guide to brain function and protection

There are many ways you can help protect your brain from damaging free radicals, as well as maximise cognitive function. 1. Vitamins C and E - a study in the medical journal Neurology (March, 2002), reported that elderly men who took these vitamin supplements at least 1/week over a number of years, were protected from dementia and actually showed improvements in cognitive function. 2. Low folate levels from vegetables have been associated with Alzheimer's. 3. Toxins like mercury, aluminium, and lead are known to damage the brain, and are linked to learning disabilities in children (Dr Bock, 2007).

So what can we do... 1. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and good quality omega 3 fish oils 2. Clean up your diet and environment - choose foods, cookware, personal care products that don't contain chemicals or heavy metals 3. Avoid flu vaccines - they contain mercury and aluminium 4. Eat lots of anti-oxidant rich foods - ie fruits, vegetables 5. Low cholesterol is NOT healthy - it is required by your brain for the cell connections involved in memory and learning For more advice on cognitive health, contact Naturopath, Christine Youssef 9501 0326

Sculpt Clinic Sydney

gets rid of the fat

Sculpt Clinic Sydney, which specialises in a new noninvasive procedure for fat reduction, has recently opened in Cronulla, offering the internationally recognised CoolSculpting procedure. Love handles, flabby tummies and back fat will be things of the past with CoolSculpting which is designed to remove unwanted fat deposits on the body that have resisted exercise and dieting but do not warrant surgical removal such as liposuction. The treatment enables both men and women to reduce fat layers and sculpt the contours of their bodies to achieve their desired shape. The technology behind CoolSculpting selectively targets fat cells and using advanced cooling, crystallises the lipids within fat cells triggering apoptosis (natural cell death). This treatment has been effectively proven in the medical science fields. Fi Spagnolo from Sculpt Clinic Sydney explained that in just a few months following the non invasive CoolSculpting procedure, there is a gradual reduction in the thickness of the fat layer resulting in a smoothing of the fat bulges. Fi says ‘This is undoubtedly good news for anyone who is seeking spot reduction for specific areas but is not considering a surgically invasive procedure”. Ultrasound testing demonstrates an average 24% reduction of fat cells in the treated area for each one hour treatment. Clients have noticed the difference after just one treatment, obvious changes within three weeks and the most dramatic results seen after a few months. Sculpt Clinic is located at Suite 10/17 Gerrale St in Cronulla. To schedule a free consultation or for further information phone 02 8544 8708 or visit the website www.sculptclinic.com.au.

my street

Taloombi Street Cronulla

Welcome to our regular section where Shine focuses on “My Street”. It is a local street that you may already live in or may like to live in. We do the research for you. The pros, the cons and how much it would cost to live there. Where: Taloombi Street, Cronulla. Set against a spectacular backdrop looking out across Gunnamatta Bay, Taloombi Street is one of South Cronulla's finest and most exclusive areas, considered by many as the Palm Beach of the South. Why: Taloombi Street is one of South Cronulla's premier addresses with spectacular Western water views over Gunnamatta Bay. This superb street offers a waterfront lifestyle of comfort and convenience. Taloombi Street is enclosed by Darook Park Beach in the south, Gunnamatta Bay to the west and Gunnamatta Park to the north. The convenience of Cronulla plaza is a beachfront stroll away. Enjoying a magnificent bay side position, this quiet street captures an intimate panorama across Gunnamatta Bay with breathtaking views from every home. All odd numbers in the street (on the western side) enjoy a “street to sand” position. All homes in 18

Shinemagazine2011

considered by many as the Palm Beach of the South the street bask in the afternoon sun and are awash with bay views. The beachside homes often include expansive level lawns, a pool and boatshed on the sand. Their balconies and entertaining terraces capture stunning sunsets across the bay. An easy stroll to the marina, station and a variety of restaurants for all tastes, Taloombi is absolute beachfront and one of Cronulla's most prized and tightly held streets. Pros: Bay side position enjoying afternoon sun, water views and a short walk to the bay side beach, marina, parks, ocean beaches and main street amenities. Cons: Expensive. Most absolute beachfronts anywhere lack some privacy with a constant parade of passers by. How much? If you want to enjoy the South Cronulla peninsula waterfront lifestyle it will cost plenty. Beachfront houses start around $4 million while houses across the road but still with bay views will cost around $2 million. Two beachfront houses sold in quick succession recently at 51 and 41 Taloombi Street for $5,200,000 and $4,000,000 respectively. Not a bad result when that sector of the market is supposedly struggling. Larry Jamieson

BUYING OFF-THE-PLAN By Suzanne Hibberd, Licensee, Abode Property Agents

180 metres to South Cronulla Beach

40% of the apartments at Latitude have sold prior to the completion of the excavation for the project. the success of Latitude and of another project i have been marketing in Richmount Street which recently ‘Sold Out’ prior to construction being completed, has prompted me to write the following; Over the years I’ve found that locals are reluctant to commit early. This generally conservative approach stems from wanting to be able to see, touch and experience the finished apartment before being prepared to put down a deposit. While this is understandable, it is a trait fraught with disappointment in South Cronulla because the stock of new apartments is so limited here. There are far more buyers than there are new apartments, and there is currently no Council approved development sites in South Cronulla, to my knowledge. Buying-off-the-plan has been around for 25 years, and almost all new apartment developments are marketed this way. It simply means entering into a contract to purchase a property prior to its completion. Latitude, in Parramatta Street, is the only new high-quality apartment building with available stock under construction. Excavation has been completed, and contracts have exchanged on 40% of the apartments. There is so much interest in the development that I can foresee having to console another group of disappointed people when I break the news to them that the apartment they had set their hearts on has been snapped up by someone else. Prospective buyers often admit to me that they hold off from purchasing because they find it hard visualising how their apartment will turn out. That may have been a valid point in the early days of

off-the-plan marketing, but today’s computer generated images are so accurate it’s like looking at a photograph, and the amount of information provided by reputable developers is reassuring that you’ll get what you pay for. By placing a 10% deposit on the apartment of your dreams and exchanging contracts no-one else can gazump you. It’s yours, and you can watch it being built as you get your finances in order. This often means selling the family home, so having plenty of time to do this without undue pressure is a blessing. As I see it, the advantages of buying your apartment off-the-plan include: + You get the widest choice by getting in early. +

You get to select your finishes/colour scheme. If you wait until construction is advanced you get what the developer decides.

+

Generally you pay a ‘discounted’ price. Historically, costs rise during the construction phase, meaning that apartments still available on completion are invariably more expensive.

+

The 10% deposit need not come out of your own pocket. You can ‘hire’ the deposit via a deposit bond, for a fee. The fee depends on the amount of the deposit and the length of time you want it for. Naturally, like all fiscal dealings, you will need to satisfy the deposit bond lender of your financial capabilities.

+

The construction phase gives you plenty of time to organise your finances.

+

In a rising market the apartment is likely to increase in value between the period of exchanging the contract and taking possession.

Fashion

The start of Spring/Summer is always a great time to clean out and refresh your wardrobe. With just a few additions and subtractions you’ll be on your way to stylish, uncomplicated look.

Day Trends: Tribal prints, chaotic colours & military looks are hot this season, fashioned into jumpsuits, sundresses, boxy tees and cargo’s. Look for Desigual, Camilla and NTS doing their best at Sentier this season. Layering: It’s still the most user friendly look we’ve come across and is loved by all the staff at Sentier. Start with skinny pants or tights, add slim tees or soft flowing tops and then cropped jackets, long 22

beads and a pretty scarf. We believe Metalicus does it best, why not join one of our workshops to see how it’s done. Evening: Special occasion dressing can be a chore. But this spring it’s easy. Stylish and simple, relaxed and romantic or elegant and exotic, it’s up to you. Look to Moss & Spy for classic creams in soft lace dresses, trenches and skinny pants with fabulous flowing tops. Or to Alex Perry who shines with one shoulder dresses, sheer beaded laces and elegant simplistic shapes. And you can’t go wrong

with a wonderful piece by Camilla, our very own kaftan queen, who by the way is doing much more these days….relax in her harem pants, play in her jumpsuits or be the ultimate style queen yourself in a smashing long or short kaftan. Whatever your look, this season has it all, just remember to have fun! And if you would like some help getting it all together (and who doesn’t need that sometimes!), take some time, visit us and try the shop on, you’re bound to find something you can’t live without!! Healthy Kids Snacks When your kids run through the door in the afternoon and head to the kitchen for a snack, make sure you have healthy snack recipes to make for them.

Coloured Pasta Necklaces

Colouring pasta is easy to do and gives kids something bright and beautiful to work with. Once the pasta is colored and dried, necklaces or charms can be made by stringing yarn.

You will need: ▪ Dried Pasta for stringing macaroni, penne or wheels. ▪ Food colouring ▪ Rubbing alcohol ▪ Zip lock plastic bags ▪ Paper towels ▪ String or yarn

2 servings Total Time: 5 minutes INGREDIENTS ▪ 15g ounce whole shelled (unpeeled) almonds ▪ 10g unsalted dry-roasted peanuts ▪ 10g ounce dried cranberries ▪ 1 tablespoon chopped pitted dates ▪ 1 1/2 teaspoons chocolate chips PREPARATION 1. Combine almonds, peanuts, cranberries, dates and chocolate chips in a small bowl. Nutrition Bonus: Potassium, magnesium, fibre, vitamins E and C. Try customising this recipe with your favourite dried fruits and nuts

Place your dried pasta in a zip plastic bag. Pour in 3-4 drops of food colouring. Pour in 1 Tablespoon of Rubbing Alcohol. Seal the bag and shake it all together. Make sure each piece of dried pasta gets coated. Pour coloured pasta out on paper towel lined trays. Food colouring can stain, so be careful. You’ll want it completely dry. I put mine out in the sun to dry faster. Get out your string or yarn and cut the length of a necklace for your child. Tie a knot at one end, big enough that the pasta will stay there. I like to tie pasta in my knotted end so the others won’t fall off. I also put a little tape around the top of the string so it won’t fray as you string. Have your child string on pasta, all sizes and shapes. You can introduce patterns or do counting with your child. Once they’ve hit the end of their string, tie the two sides together for a necklace around your child’s neck. They can even make bracelets or little charms to hang in their rooms.

Have fun making these colours come alive.

health A Better Breakfast Can Boost a Child's Brainpower Attention children: Don't miss breakfast or your school marks could pay a price. Evidence suggests that eating breakfast really does help kids learn. After fasting all night, a developing body (and brain) needs a fresh supply of glucose — or blood sugar. That's the brain's basic fuel. Sugary cereals get into your body quickly and cause a peak in blood-sugar levels, but the levels then fall dramatically after two hours or so. Oatmeal, on the other hand, is absorbed slowly, so oatmeal eaters gets a slow rise in blood sugar and enough energy to last through the morning. What's more, oatmeal eaters don't experience a steep drop in blood-sugar levels, and that's a good thing. A dip in blood sugar can bring with it a release of hormones that affect mood. In some children, the hormones seem to affect concentration and memory.

baby buzz Coughs and sneezes

spread

diseases

P Johnson and Friends may be cartoon characters but Johnson the pink elephant has a point. Coughs and sneezes are part of life with a new baby and they certainly love to share the diseases around. Babies may have as many as six colds before they reach age one! Why do babies get so many colds? You do everything right. You keep your baby inside during the cold weather. You steer clear of sick people. You wash their hands frequently, as well as your own, and still your baby catches colds! Your children's immune system builds as they grow and develop. It is impossible for them to acquire immunities to every strand of cold. They catch colds more frequently than an adult because their immune system is still immature. Even if you are vigilant about washing their hands, think how often they touch objects and then place their

hands in their mouth. That's a lot of germs that they expose themselves to on a daily basis! Is It a Cold or an Allergy? Allergies have some distinct characteristics that make them easier to discern from colds. While some children run a fever with colds, allergies aren't accompanied by an elevated body temperature. Your child's cold may produce thick, yellow or green mucus, but mucus caused by an allergy remains clear. If it is winter time, your child is more than likely suffering from a cold instead of an allergy. Allergy season starts now: spring, summer, and autumn. We want the best for our children but remember: coughs and sneezes are a vital part of building your child’s immune system. Like many things, they are a necessary part of growing up.

men's health

love it’s not a dirty word

When was the last time you told your partner, kids, family or friends that you loved them? For us blokes the word love can sometimes be a dirty word. We need to get better at saying the word so that people around us know how we feel about them. Why is it sometimes difficult for us blokes to share what we are feeling with those close to us? As a man we are taught to be tough. We are taught that boys don’t cry and that real men keep on keeping on, no matter what. From a young age our parents and those around us teach us to keep our feelings to ourselves. That is not to say as blokes we don’t have feelings, we have just been taught not to show them. In response to not feeling comfortable about our feelings we try and substitute those feelings for actions. Men are big on action. We fix things, solve things, or throw money at things. We are not sure how to express what we are feeling. So as a man we try and do whatever is socially acceptable in order to address the issues we face in our lives. The problem is that most of our issues can’t be solved the “traditional” male way. As men we haven’t been able to recognise that some of our “problems” have been caused by us. We have gone about our business in our own way not realising that the people closest to us don’t want our money. They don’t want us to just provide things for them. What the people we love need from us is our words. The people we love want to hear from us blokes what we think, what we feel. The hardest thing on earth for a male to do is talk about his feelings. 32

Shinemagazine2011

The hardest thing on earth for a male to do is talk about his feelings. For a man, expressing a feeling is weak. It makes us feel vulnerable and when we feel vulnerable, we attack. The problem is the more we attack that feeling, the more we drive those we love away from us. Because this is such an unconscious process many blokes don’t know they are attacking. As a man we have been taught not to be seen as weak. So when we have a feeling of weakness we automatically attack that feeling. We can’t help attacking the weakness; we have been trained to do it. Boys, we need to get more comfortable expressing our feelings. We have to get better at saying what is on our minds. A real man is someone who is not afraid to say what they are feeling. A real man knows that the people he loves are his biggest supporters. A real man knows that without his loved ones, he is nothing. Stand up right now. Pick up the phone, tell the people you love that you love them. Let go of the “traditional” male view of life. Don’t teach our kids the same thing we were taught - make the decision to break the cycle right now. All you need is love! By Joel Curtis. Principle Psychologist – Life Resolutions Miranda. Muz & Hardos Fishing Tips

brown & rainbow trout As we are still experiencing a cold snap as we go to print, good friends of ours are getting great catches of trout down in Jindabyne. If you are interested in cold water fishing, whether it be casting a fly, or downrigging, trout are great fun to catch and aren’t too bad on the plate either. Here are a few tips on nailing that monster. Start the day off trolling surface lines through no more than 15 feet of water, but keep the length of line from the boat at least 70 metres to 100 metres away for best results. Lead core line at about 20 metres out and with a Tasmanian Devil lure will get you down to about 10 feet deep and trolled along with a surface line will get you the bigger browns feeding on the bottom, as our Editor at Large, Melisa George shows us here, a personal best for her and would be for many people.

Reports are that there are still some good browns being caught on bigger Rapalas (9 to 13 cm) up near Waste Point and I would expect a few more brown trout will be there with the cooler changes coming through now. Yellowing lures, with the number 50 Frog pattern, the SW Lime Green Yellowwings and Y Freddo very popular for the brighter days.Y48 and Holographic (mostly brown lures) Tasmanian Devils in the Duel Depth best in the very early morning, later evening or when it’s cloudy. Rapalas, (Rainbow Trout or Perch) trolled off lead lines is the best lure for catching the brown trout or bigger Atlantic Salmon. Best areas to try are East Jindabyne Islands, Hayshed Bay, Lion and Cub Islands and the South arm have been fishing very well. It might be worth trying Sid’s Bay early in the morning.

men's health

Don't get hit below the belt

Pelvic Floor Muscles: Strengthening Exercises for Blokes. Why are pelvic floor muscles (PFM) important for men? Men of all ages should retain strong pelvic floor muscles. While it has long been recognised that the role of the PFMs are important for women, particularly following childbirth, for men it is a subject hardly ever discussed or even regarded as significant for them. Where are the PFM’s? They are thin sheets of muscle stretching like a hammock from the tailbone at the back to the pubic bone at the front and through which the urinary tract and the bowel pass. What do they do? Provide support for the pelvic and lower abdominal organs. Provide control for the opening of the bladder and bowel.

Assist abdominal and back muscles to support your spine. This is a major strategy for preventing and rehabilitating lower back pain. What do strong pelvic floor muscles mean for you? Minimise the occurrence of bladder and / or bowel incontinence when coughing, sneezing or lifting, particularly as you age. Promote good control when you need to “go” urgently. Help reduce back pain. Increase social confidence and quality of life by having good bladder and bowel control. It is of great importance for men pre and post prostrate surgery. For more information on how to strengthen the PFM’s contact Phil Richardson at Southside Physiotherapy.

soul reason

Boosting your

brain power by entertaining positive thoughts

The past number of years, due to varying circumstances, when attending some family functions, feelings of inadequacy and insecurity have welled up within me. I pray that the "measuring tape of selfworth" sticking out of the top of my head isn't visible to anyone but me, and I find myself entertaining thoughts of critical comparison. You'd think that at fortysomething I would have stopped "entertaining" these thoughts and moved on to recognising and dismissing them, but still I find myself believing them at times! Critical thoughts filled with comparison and insecurity are nothing short of tiring and self destructive. Often when we entertain such thinking, we allow it to be planted in our minds. Once planted, it is hard not to entertain it and even harder to discard it. These negative thoughts take hold in our minds just like weeds in an unattended garden. We need to take seriously

the task of guarding our minds against such thinking. When we guard our minds, it's as if we are holding up a shield of truth that repels such negativity. I've heard it said, "Every spiritual battle is won or lost at the threshold of the mind. " While I do believe we can triumph over this thinking once we've allowed it to cross over the threshold, we can save ourselves a great deal of trouble and heartache, if we begin to recognise the negativity, reject it and then replace it with some form of truth. Preparing the

Pool for Summer

It's time to break out the swimming pool for another summer. Getting the pool ready can be a pain, but with some help from your fellow pool users it’s easy to get the pool clean and ready to go. First take a look at the area surrounding your pool. Clear up anything that could end up as debris in the pool. Check out your deck area, patio & plant beds. Prune trees and hedges that have grown over in recent months. Your pool has been winterised for months and probably accumulated leaves and gunk on the pool cover. The cover should be swept and hosed. Once the cover is clean remove it. Do this with at least one helper. Solid covers should be folded like a fan into 3-5 foot folds. Mesh covers should have the springs or fasteners removed and be fan folded accordion style. Let the cover dry completely before storing it. Store indoors and away from moisture, rodents and insects. Check out the pump and filter. Replace any parts that are damaged or worn. If your pool is concrete

or fibreglass make an inspection for cracks. If there is calcium scale or stains on the tiles remove them with a household cleaner or baking soda. If they prove really tough tackle them with a pumice stone. Fill the pool to the middle of the waterline tile and clean out any debris that has accumulated on the bottom of the pool. To do this you can use a floor brush. Finish off by using a pool vacuum. Get the filter running and wait for 12-24 hours so that the old and new water has mixed before you add chemicals or do any testing. Next get a pool test kit and test your pool for health and safety. You will be checking the Chlorine content, ph level, alkalinity and hardness of the calcium Super-chlorinate the pool. This involves a shock treatment of high dosage chlorine. This will get rid of any algae and microorganisms. Wait a further 24- hours and test again. If all looks good it's time to take that well-earned dip.

Leafy greens

gardens on the go

now what were they for?

With the growing number of people diagnosed with dementia, perhaps it’s time to look at what edible plants we can grow to boost the brain and memory. Studies have found that folate, vitamin E and vitamin K aid in the prevention of dementia. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, silverbeet or ruby chard are some examples that supply these nutrients that are good for the brain, all easy to grow, so why not give them a go. Choose an area of the garden that receives around five hours of sun per day. Plant seedlings into a well prepared soil that has added manure or compost. Space each plant about 20cm apart. If growing in containers use a premium potting mix. Fertilise plants with a high nitrogen fertiliser such as Yates Thrive, every couple of weeks. Greens can be harvested for months by removing the outer leaves

A vegetable garden should be well designed

for use in salads, stir fry dishes, juices or your favourite recipes that require greens. Look out for caterpillars that also love leafy greens, hand remove or spray with an organic pesticide such as Organic Crop Protectants - Eco-Neem. For snails and slugs leave a dish of beer, they love it and will probably get too tipsy to worry about eating your greens. Of course you don’t have to stop at growing greens, any home grown vegetables and herbs are good for you, and you know exactly what they have been sprayed with Karen Smith - Karen@gardensonthego.com.au

Canberra Visit Canberra, home of the Australian story. Experience what it means to be Australian through our identity, culture, history, politics, art and national celebrations. Discover the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve or Namadgi National Park. Delve into stylish restaurants, bars and shops brimming with local produce and wine. At night, come alive to a city with a vibrant entertainment scene for all tastes. Celebrate spring in Canberra when the city and surrounding region explodes with colour and brilliant blue skies tempt you to get out and discover the new season. Canberra's Floriade is a celebration of spring. Every year more than a million annuals and bulbs are planted in specially designed flowerbeds around Lake Burley Griffin in Commonwealth Park. The displays are centred on a different theme each year. In past years Aussie icons, myths and legends brought floral portraits of Rolf Harris and Dame Edna to Commonwealth Park; The Films that Shaped Our Nation recreated Muriel's iconic wedding dress; and The Heavens in Bloom used flowers to depict the planets and the Milky Way. Floriade is the largest flower festival in the southern hemisphere with over one million blooms creating a stunning backdrop for Canberra’s month-long

celebration of spring. It also encompasses Floriade NightFest, five exciting nights filled with outdoor movie screenings, music, food, wine and much more to heat up the cool Canberra evenings. But while the music plays and the wine flows, it is always the flowers that are the star of the show, all planted out in eye-catching and unusual designs. The Floriade story began in 1986 when the ACT Parks and Conservation Society created a huge floral display to celebrate the 1988 Bicentenary and Canberra’s 75th birthday. Australia’s Floriade is now the largest springtime festival of its type in the world.

beauty "When our feet and legs aren't on display the way they are during warmer weather, we tend not to moisturise as much. We don't pay as much attention to things like dry cuticles. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for skin that is neglected to react. It becomes dry, dull, and flaky, sometimes even red and inflamed," said Citron. The good news: Beautiful, summer skin is closer than the nearest watermelon patch! The best place to start is with a head-to-toe moisture treatment. You don't need high-priced products to do the job right. What’s the best moisturiser? "One of the best moisturisers you can use is good old fashioned petroleum jelly. It is particularly good on the very roughest, toughest areas of skin such as heels, elbows, and knees," says Heidi Waldorf, director of dermatology at a medical centre. If you've ever heard the old wives' tale about drenching your feet in Vaseline and then donning a pair of white cotton socks, well, it's not a myth. It really can dramatically change the way your feet look and feel, almost overnight.

Spring cleaning

your skin

Want to get your face and body ready for spring and summer? As the days get longer and temperatures begin to climb, off go the sweaters and boots and on go the shorts and sandals. While your spirit may be singing the praises of spring, it's likely your skin is still crying out with the winter blues. You may be left with dry, scaly, rough, spots on heels, knees, and elbows as well as overheated, undernourished skin on your face and body. "Nothing is worse for skin than a long, cold winter. The low humidity of air conditioning in conjunction with the hot air, heat and less fresh air often leave your skin looking dull, dry, rough, wrinkled and older" says Cheryl Citron, past president of the Dermatology Society. Knees, elbows, heels, and toes suffer from a winter in boots where too often, says Citron, what we don't see, we neglect.

If you don't like sleeping in socks, smear your feet with petroleum jelly before you put on your gym socks and sneakers for exercising or running errands. If your hands are in equal need of a spring makeover, coat them with petroleum jelly and don a pair of white cotton gloves. Any time you are doing a household or garden chore that requires you to wear rubber gloves or gardening gloves, put on the petroleum jelly first, then the white gloves, then the rubber gloves over that and pamper your skin while you work. By the time your chores are done you've given your hands a terrific beauty treatment. Shinemagazine2011
