Michelle Black on HOPE and EDUCATION for RWANDA We are often touched by someone else’s kindness or unselfishness and wonder how they came about to do such a thing and why they would step out of their comfort zone to help those less fortunate than themselves. michelle black is ‘someone In the shire’ who does just that and finds herself packing her bags each July school holidays to make the journey to rwanda to be part of a teaching training program ‘hoPe rWanda’.

6

ShinemagazIne2011

In this issue of shine our theme is ‘spreading the Joy’ and I couldn’t think of a better person that this relates to and am sure in time ten’s of thousands of children who are better educated for it will share the joy of being educated for a better life, something that every child should be given no matter their circumstance. I met michelle black back in april at the ‘Walk of hope’ an 18km walk that is held each year from Inaburra school at bangor, and finishes at cronulla. the reason for an 18km walk is that is the distance a child has to walk to get to school everyday in rwanda. education is the key to rebuilding the nation and lifting rwandans out of poverty. the ‘Walk of hope’ is designed to increase awareness of the rwandan plight and raise funds. michelle a pre school teacher/ director for the past 21 years has travelled to rwanda for the past five years to help improve education in the country. Volunteers have travelled to rwanda and cambodia to improve education in these countries. the genocide of 1994 left rwanda in a state of devastation, with over 800,000 lives lost. the country has since been trying to rebuild and restore the education

system to build a better future. aussie teachers, such as michelle, have been working with the Rwandan government to retrain Rwandan teachers as a practical means of support. in this past 5 years, teams of teachers have successfully trained over 3000 teachers and this year hope to train a many more. "We are not white aussie heroes” michelle puts it when asked how this achievement makes her feel and puts it down to more a pyramid effect. The more teachers they educate the more children will be educated. There are three teams of teachers for nursery aged children 2-5 years, teaching child development, routine behaviour, primary age teaching english and iT teaching basic computer skills. michelle takes her self funded pilgrimage to Rwanda every July School Holidays when the teacher programs are run and stays in Kigali the capital of Rwanda home to over 1 million people. “Sometimes there is running water sometimes there’s not, it’s easy to go (to Rwanda) and harder to come back. We have so much to complain about yet have so many choices, we can’t live in two worlds and need to accept their culture however for me it’s not where you live but how you live” said michelle when asked to explain how this plight effects her life.

"

As i think about re-entry into the western world and i think of the foods, the fast pace, the pressure to ‘look right’, ‘sound right’, have a good job, be here, go there, do this and have that and i see the faces of the crowd in Mocambique - the poverty, the disease, the hunger, the hurt and the despair... And i hear that baby cry, is he hungry, is he cold, is he hurt or does he need a change – how are we to ever know. Do you ever get used to the cries of the babies – no i don’t think i ever will!

Muz and Hardo had an equipment meltdown so Giffo steps in to give us the low down on Port Hacking Bream Port Hacking has some of the cleanest waters in the Sydney region. It is also home to a healthy population of the hard fighting Yellow fin and Southern Black bream. Apart from being a stern opponent, they are sweet and succulent on the table and offer a great reward for successful fishos. Dusk and dawn are prime bream times and the best times to be on the water. They also coincide with minimal water traffic so the wily bream is more likely to roam from their daytime hideouts. Bream love structure and cover. Not only for protection, but for the food sources they provide. Oyster encrusted rock walls and jetties are bream havens and easily accessible. Another prime bream spot are the shallow sand flats abundant in the Hacking. Find a spot that has patches of broken sand and ribbon weed and you’re in business. When they are in the mood, bream aren’t fussy eaters. However, if you want to consistently catch fish, fresh is best! In the Hacking, live nippers/yabbies are the number one bait followed by fresh peeled prawns. Beach worms and strips of fresh bait fish such as Yellowtail or Mullet are also terrific. Bream are brilliant when BBQ’d and fabulous fried in a light beer batter. Some say better baked Asian style, with aromatic herbs, spices and greens. Perhaps the best thing about the humble bream is that you don’t need to be an expert to bring home a feed. I have often been out fished by my kids, who love nothing more than showing Dad how it is done.

Get your Healthy High Naturally There are many reasons why we sometimes feel like we're hovering just above the ground, and know there must be a better way of living. A healthy high is only worth aiming for, if it addresses the "grass roots" problems, and secondly, is sustainable. Some "grass roots" issues may include: 1. an under or over functioning thyroid 2. hormonal imbalance 3. low nutrient diet 4. chronic stress 5. poor digestion and/or elimination 6. sleep problems 7. inadequate physical activity 8. emotional health issues eg depression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem To move from hovering above ground to soaring

skyward, our diet and lifestyle may need some adjusting. A few sustainable changes may include: 1. less coffee, and alcohol 2. more physical moving (esp everyday activity like taking the stairs, walking in our lunch hour etc) 3. focusing the diet on eggs, nuts, legumes, lean meat, fruit and vegetables, healthy fats, yoghurt, water 4. improving elimination & circulation - exercise, fibre, water, massage, herbal medicines 5. checking in with your GP for some blood tests (thyroid, iron, liver function, hormone levels) 6. finding a good counsellor to explore emotional obstacles to your health A natural healthy high is achievable and sustainable. If you need some guidance putting things in place, feel free to contact Christine Youssef, Naturopath, at Health in our Hands - 9501 0326.

Dental Myths Women often say they lost a tooth or had a filling for every child. myth, however pregnancy exaggerates the bacteria in the mouth causing bleeding gums or gingivitis. Dental treatment should be avoided during pregnancy. myth, although avoid amalgam removal and some antibiotics. Cleaning, fillings and local anaesthetics are OK. The more you brush the healthier your teeth will be. Tooth paste is a mild abrasive and wears teeth. Use a soft brush with toothpaste twice a day for two minutes. Weight loss can affect the fit of your dentures. myth. The fit of the denture is determined by the shape of the bone under the tissue. Gum disease and bad breath can be caught by kissing someone. True. Dental X-rays are unnecessary. X-rays provide early detection of decay and other problems. if my gums are bleeding, i should not brush or floss them. myth. Bleeding gums are caused by plaque build up which needs to be removed by regular brushing and flossing.

i don’t need to take my child to the dentist until they get their second teeth. myth. Permanent teeth arrive age of six but by this time damage may have occurred. Take your child for a check up aged one. Wisdom teeth are coming through and crowding my teeth. if i have them removed they will straighten up again. myth. Wisdom teeth rarely cause crowding of the teeth. Removing them will not solve the crowding nor restraighten teeth. The dentist won’t know i haven’t brushed my teeth regularly. myth. not brushing will cause gums to be red, swollen and bleed easily. it’s obvious to your dentist. Tooth whitening is harmful and damages the teeth. Tooth whitening causes no damage to the enamel of the teeth. by Dr Blatchford

if you would like to try homemade ice cream then i have a great recipe for vanilla ice cream.

2011 Wahu Surfer Groms Competition

First make your own vanilla extract. it is a basic ingredient of any ice cream. You’ll need: a bit less than a litre of milk, a vanilla bean (available at most health food stores), and a teaspoon of honey. Pour the milk in a saucepan and heat on high. Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise in half. Put the halves of the vanilla bean into the milk. Boil for 15 to 20 minutes then cook on medium heat for half an hour or until the milk has a thin sheet of film on top. Stir the mixture constantly as it cooks. Cool the extract and freeze. This extract will last you for quite awhile. Vanilla Ice Cream You’ll need: 3 eggs with the egg whites and yolks separated, 1/2 cup of honey, 4 cups of light cream and 2 teaspoons of the above vanilla extract. 1. Beat the egg yolks until smooth. Gradually add honey while beating till well blended and thick. 2. in a different bowl beat the egg whites until stiff. Stir beaten whites in with the yolk and honey. 3. add the cream and egg mixture together into a saucepan. Cook on medium heat stirring constantly for 15 minutes. 4. Stir in the vanilla extract. either process in an ice cream maker or just freeze in a bucket container overnight, stirring the ice cream every few hours at first and then allowing the ice cream to freeze on its own. Serve with an ice cream scoop. This ice cream is rich, creamy and natural. i’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

DID YOU KNOW EYELID SKIN IS THE THINNEST ON THE BODY?

Shade your eyes too!

SUNGLASSES ARE MORE THAN A FASHION accessory; they are a vital part of sun protection for all of us. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage our skin and our eyes and although we can’t smear sunscreen on our eyes the way we do our skin, we MUST still protect them. Well fitting sunglasses are the best way to protect your eyes when out in the sun. Choose sunglasses that sit as snuggly as possible on your face without touching the eyelashes and choose polarised for maximum glare reduction. At Shire Optometrists we have a vast range of sunglasses to suit everybody, from the sport orientated to fashion conscious and budget aware, we have everybody covered. Accumulated UV exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, cancer and pterygium. So don’t

forget the children!! Protection should start at an early age and become part of their routine. UV exposure at an early age is the most damaging in the long term as the human eye is still developing. Here in the Shire we love our beautiful beaches and waterways, but we need to be sun aware and that should include sunglasses as part of your daily routine. At Shire Optometrists we have a large range of sunglasses to suit those people who have a prescription and often forget to include tinted prescription glasses in their daily routine. Remember these can be claimed through your health fund too! If you haven’t claimed this year remember to do so before December 31st 2011-or risk losing it!

soul reason

The Joy In

Friendships

FRIENDSHIPS ENRICH OUR LIVES. THEY HELP US through the valleys of despair and rejoice with us on the mountaintops of joy. Friends do life with us. Of course, in order to have good friends, you must be a good friend to others. Certain qualities promote deep and lasting friendships. For example, honesty and loyalty set the foundation for friendship that can last a lifetime. My best friends are people I can trust and I want them to know they can trust me too. In addition, patience, kindness and a sense of humor are essential in developing and maintaining enduring friendship. A good chuckle at our human foibles helps us to keep in mind that even the best friendships will have imperfections. Friendship! It’s one of the true riches we can have in this life. Many of us have friends who radiate joy. There is an attractiveness that draws others to them. Does it come naturally to them? Do they just have fewer problems than the rest of us or is there a way to cultivate this quality in our lives? I fellowship alongside a

group of very such women every Thursday night who radiate joy – we get together over a cup of tea and just do ‘life’ together. They are the kind of friends who don’t bale; they stay. They allow you to be yourself, no matter what ‘self ’ looks like in that moment. They hold me accountable in what I do and their passion for life sharpens my desire to be a person who also radiates joy. Want to know more about how to experience the ‘J’ factor (Joy factor)? Maintaining your

Pool during Summer

Summer iS here again and with it comeS the pool parties that make summer days worthwhile. You’ve already made that ceremonial first dip into the cold, yet refreshing blue water. as you know, the work on your pool is just beginning. here are some tips to keep in mind throughout summer that will help keep your pool clean and safe Clean off leaves and debris this one may seem obvious, but don’t wait too long to clear out those pesky insects and leaves that invade your pool on a daily basis. the unwanted rubbish will leave stains across the bottom of your pool if left unattended. Vacuum as often as possible. Clean skimmer clean out your skimmer on at least a weekly basis. the skimmer will operate to its full potential if cleaned regularly which is essential for clean swimming water. Brush use a brush on the sides of your pool to remove any algae or discoloration. Brush the sediment that

you collect toward the main drain so it can be easily vacuumed. Check and clean filters every pool has a different type of filter but each serves to clear out debris and particles from your pool. clean and maintain your filter according to the manufacturer’s directions. Test and shock test your water on a regular basis and add chemicals if necessary. a regular shock treatment of chlorine will clear the water of dirt, bacteria, algae, and other unwanted organic matter. Monitor the water level Your pool equipment may not function properly if the water level is too low. add more water as needed and check the chemicals. maintenance can be a chore, but your efforts will be rewarded when the clear blue water becomes a welcoming comfort during hot and humid summer days.

Give a hand for Christmas Stuck for gift ideas for Christmas? Have you thought about giving your own gift vouchers? “This voucher entitles the recipient to: - “Three hours of weeding” or “One days labour in the garden” or “Lawn mowing for one month”. Giving your time can be a truly precious gift and is also a rewarding gift for children to give to their parents, grandparents or seniors in the neighbourhood. Many people go away and worry about their plants or garden, perhaps your gift voucher could include watering their garden whilst they are away. If you are time deprived yourself and couldn’t spare the time to do any work in someone else’s garden perhaps you could purchase a gift voucher from a local garden business for a few hours of garden maintenance. Be sure to buy from a reputable business that has qualified staff! Make up your own garden hampers and include

How much do I need to retire? A very common question! Firstly, you need to decide; 1. Your lifestyle costs, and 2. An age to retire Lifestyle costs ASFA Retirement Standards Index (Sep 2011) provides estimations to retirement lifestyles; Single - modest $21,746pa and comfortable $40,121pa Couple - modest $31,519pa and comfortable $54,954pa. These are good guides, but it’s important you customise to suit your preferences. Retirement age Taking your lifestyle costs pa and chosen age to retire use the following multiples. 55 – lifestyle x 19 60 – lifestyle x 17 65 – lifestyle x 15

For example Lifestyle of $50,000pa 55 – $50,000 x 19 = $950,000 60 – $50,000 x 17 = $850,000 65 – $50,000 x 15 = $750,000 Please note, these estimates do assume, you own a residence and continue to do so. Exclude large capital expenditures. Centrelink estimates have been assumed to be received when eligible. Estimates are in present value terms and assume a return of approximately 3-4%pa above inflation. On this basis, most retirees will deplete their retirement capital over their lifetime, likely mid to late 80’s, dependent on investment returns achieved and personal expenditure. However, they would continue to own their residence. Experience has shown however that most clients lifestyle costs reduce post mid 70’s which helps capital last longer. Whilst not an exhaustive calculation, it’s a good start pending further planning. Remember, it’s never too early nor too late to start planning to achieve Personal Financial Success. Shine's Summer

skin care

SUMMER IS BACK! BUST OUT YOUR BREEZY dresses and teeny bikinis girls because if past summers are any indication the next few months are going to be hot, hot, and hot! Greet the sizzle with sun-kissed skin, barely-there makeup, tousled hair and you're all set! After all, who wouldn’t want to look like a glowing goddess while on the beach or at outdoor parties? Summer is notorious for ruining your skin. But don't fret! Follow these simple skin savers and you’ll get through summer looking smoking’ hot without getting burned. Apart from keeping your face clean, slathering on sunscreen is one of the easiest ways to take care of your skin. The daily habit of using sunscreen with at least SPF 15 is widely recommended. A great many of you have probably taken advantage of our beachside location and are skipping off to the beach as we speak. Wherever you’re headed this season, don’t forget: harmful UV rays are everywhere, so bring your sunscreen!

Sunscreen is as essential to a girl’s beauty kit as the LBD (Little Black Dress). Women today are foregoing the unprotected sunbathing of their mothers’ era and opting for the safer choice of everyday SPF. SPF refers to Sun Protection Factor, which is a measurement of UVB protection. The numbers don’t indicate how much time you can spend under the sun. It’s more important to reapply every two hours than to get a higher SPF. There is no waterproof, sweatproof, or all-day sunscreen. Exposure to water, sweat, or even your beach towel will lower the effectiveness of your sunscreen. Take the time to reapply it. A sunblock is opaque and contains physical filters that create a shield-like barrier. A sunscreen is transparent on your skin. Sunblock is safer because you don't have to apply it as often. Read on to Shine some light on the proper use of sun block. Use at least a teaspoon of sunscreen on your face and an ounce (a shot glass) on your body. Rub it on all exposed areas of the body until it disappears into your skin. Remember often forgotten parts—the ears, the back of the neck, hands, and legs. The sun radiates ultraviolet or UV light. Sun block either creates a thin film to filter the UV light or absorbs the rays before they can do any harm. The sun’s energy penetrates deeply into the skin and damages the DNA of skin cells which may lead to skin cancer. You need to protect yourself. So use some sunscreen daily, even when it’s cloudy. Try to avoid the sun between 10 am and 4 pm. A widebrimmed hat and sunglasses are cool! Sunscreen is more every day than you think, so rub some on each day! The smell of coconut oil will transport you back to the beach, even when you’re in the urban jungle. SHINEMAGAZINE2011
