SUCCESS in LOVE Celebrating life’s most valued gift
As we meander into the now much celebrated day of the Valentine on February 14, we are reminded of how meaningful it is to love and be loved. In search of relationships from which we hope to experience love, we usually proceed in either of two directions, and in some cases hedge our bets by hopping from one to the other. The first path can be taken either consciously or unconsciously where the relationship is there primarily for comfort and security. It is a dream or fantasy of love. There is an attempt to shape the relationship to allay 8
Shinemagazine2012
any insecurity against life’s ever-changing nature. It tries to hold onto ideas and habits that provide predictability, certainty and safety. Underpinning this way of relating we often find fear and doubt in one or both individuals. The second path doesn’t rely on comfort and security as givens, but views these as earned rewards from challenge and growth through relating. They belong primarily to the individual who continues to develop them internally by becoming more alive to themselves. This path views love as an adventure. The reality of impermanence in life is not denied so that
provide, from which they find inner resources to keep the relationship alive. The couple participates in their relationship, learning to use each difficulty as an opportunity to know themselves better and shape themselves from their discovered strengths and weaknesses. This is conscious commitment and to be truly in it we must remain awake to what is going on and be prepared to give it intelligent attention. It is in conscious commitment that relationships have the greatest opportunity to find success in love. Finding Success in Love through Conscious Commitment. The following capacities will be tested but remember they are, more often than not, developed along the way through the ups and downs, stepping forward and back. Uncertainty about whether we can handle the challenges is not a problem, for it is part of the path. Curiosity and Honesty about why you want to be in a relationship. Know and Understand what your partner wants. Believe in and Value the relationship for similar reasons. To go beyond “ME FIRST”. Can you listen whilst holding onto your own feelings and reactivities? Willingness to feel uncomfortable & an awareness that this is an important part of the process. Willingness to be seen, warts and all. A healthy capacity to Respect the other as well as yourself. Flexibility in change, eg, having children shifts all the parameters of a couple! what is there becomes precious rather than taken for granted. The richest flavours of love are found in relationships that are allowed to unfold through life’s unpredictability and in the joy of making new discoveries. The partners don’t try to fit the relationship into a previewed fantasy but feast on the unknown possibilities. On this path the individuals believe they are ever growing into all they can be and that it is these challenges along the way, that relationships definitely
An ongoing personal development of values & beliefs. Willingness to sharpen your tools of talk. These are a few of the important capacities and each couple will discover more. YOUMEWE Counselling Individual & Couple DEENA THOMPSON 0438811117 Creating Relationship Awareness Shinemagazine2012

Unconditional
soul reason
love
When I married my wonderful husband six years ago, I fully intended to unconditionally love him. I had great intentions of being the perfect wife, with encouraging words, a romantic kiss and dinner on the table every evening! But then business involvements intensified, bills increased, extended relationships strained, chores grew and life got chaotic. When marriage doesn't meet the unrealistic expectations we imagine before the wedding, and real life kicks in, often we can inadvertently get lured into tearing down our husbands and our marriages as well. In fact, the longer couples are together, the easier it becomes to not only see each other's flaws, but to mercilessly criticize them. This eventually leads to low tolerances, short tempers, minimal patience and a woeful lack of marital bliss. As a result, those gifts of unconditional love that were once offered so freely become gifts that we are not so willing to offer at all. We have the power to build up or tear down our
partners every day, merely by the amount of respect we give and the amount of faith we let them know we have in them. Respect and admiration are two of the most powerful tools a woman has to show love to her husband. Through a wife's gifts of unconditional love, respect, and admiration, we can help our husbands become the great men that God created them to be, and in turn, create the marriages we always dreamed of. someone in the shire
Love,
Marriage and Freedom of Choice Coral Kortlepel may hail from the Sutherland Shire however her full time profession as marriage celebrant takes her to the most beautiful locations all over Sydney, marrying local residents and couples from overseas. After becoming a civil marriage celebrant in 1994, Coral Kortlepel has married thousands of couples all over Sydney and been awarded the ‘Best Marriage Celebrant in NSW’ twelve times with the most recent being in 2009. Recently Coral was also nominated as one of the ‘Top Three Marriage Celebrants’ in Australia as well as ‘Most Popular Designer of Dreams’, receiving the highest number of votes over a 3-year period out of 5000 national nominees. To top all these achievements off, in May 2010 Coral was voted Nation Wide at the ‘Best Marriage Celebrant in Australia’, something she is extremely honoured and proud of. Over the years weddings have become less of the traditional style and designed more around the couple’s individuality, which is why Coral offers 18 different ceremonies to choose from. By offering these choices couples feel more comfortable with what is being said which portrays a much more relaxed atmosphere for the couple and their guests on their special day. Also couples are encouraged, if they would like, to write their own wedding vows. Love is patient, love is kind and sometimes love needs to be worked upon to keep the fire burning, so as in this issue of Shine our theme is ‘LOVE’, what better person to ask some questions on LOVE than Coral who has met and married 1000’s of couples who have fallen in love and tied the knot? How can we define love, or what-is-love? Sometime couples confuse desire & passion with love. It is what lasts after the passion dies down a bit. I feel it is when the passion is still there but you can look past the 4 day beard, and still love the guy under it, or the cap off the toothpaste, or when they are frustrating 14
Shinemagazine2012
Do not spend half of your life trying to change them. and always run late, or forgetting the odd anniversary (note any male reader I did say odd,) and all the other little everyday things that make up life, and yet you still want to wake up next to this person, and still want to grow old with them. I think that is love. What makes a great couple? They need to have similar tastes, not in everything, but quite a few. Doing things together is important, as a couple putting your partner first, above the mates and the girlfriends, respect each other. By this I mean if you would not want it done to you, don’t do it. What are your top 5 tips for keeping the flame and your marriage alive? 1. Laughter - you must have a sense of humour. 2. Surprising each other by doing unexpected little things for the other. 3. Every now and then the champagne, candles and the flowers are important. 4. Respect each other’s individuality. 5. Spend time away together, even if it is only one night or one weekend if you can manage it, go somewhere together, and remember why you got married, and just reconnect. Carol Kortlepel’s final tip… Respect each other as individuals. Remember that making just one phone call just to say “I love you” works wonders. Also, bear in mind that the person you fell in love with is unique, this is why you fell for them in the first place. So do not spend half of your life with them trying to change them. Stephanie had her family besotted with her from her first breath on April 10, 1992. A bright and cheerful girl, she chatted to anyone and had the most gorgeous giggle that would light up a room. She still has … Steph continues to have a positive impact on many people, some she does not even know. Stephanie’s life changed forever on September 18, 2011 when she had a seizure caused by a large tumour in her brain. She underwent surgery the next day to remove as much as possible of the tumour and made a fast recovery. Rarely occurring in females, particularly 19 year olds, this aggressive tumour claims all its victims. Time is bought with a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy cycles for as long as can be tolerated. Many of Stephanie’s dreams have been put on hold while she fights this battle. Dreams of a degree and a piano/singing teacher position are now unlikely. She is still playing piano, singing and is a popular girl with a whole lot of courage. Stephanie loves hanging with friends and is mad on the colour purple. We are holding a party for Steph on 25.2.12 (invitation only). Her family and friends will join together and get behind her for the journey ahead, all wearing something purple and a bandanna. Steph loves to give so the party and party activities will be used to raise funds for her chosen charities. She has decided to donate funds raised to the Starlight Children’s Foundation (because of her love for children and to ensure sick kids are provided some joy amongst the pain of treatment) and Cure For Life Foundation (to raise awareness and research options for the cause, treatment and prevention of this horrible disease).

People who Shine It is quite extraordinary the people you meet in our community, relatively unknown, who have the talent and experience to be renowned internationally in their chosen field. Shine recently caught up with Dallas Power, an artist whose bespoke jewellery shines on the international stage and is worn by the rich and famous. Dallas explains that a beautiful stone deserves a beautiful setting. How that stone is set can dramatically enhance or detract from its beauty and appearance. Design is a very important aspect of our lives. It is particularly so with an engagement or wedding ring as they will be worn every day. You need to decide if the ring you are choosing is going to be practical for the lifestyle you lead. You are not only selecting a beautiful design, but also a craftsman who can guide you through the delicate decisions that a life long piece will present. Beautiful, elegantly themed, engraved, carved and sculptured designs are a specialty of Dallas. His passion is to create jewellery that is unique to the individual and without compromise. His jewellery is designed to last generations. The big difference between Dallas and many jewellers is that he not only designs. He crafts the 18
Shinemagazine2012
ring from start to finish. There is no middle man. The customer is personally involved with Dallas in the whole process. You will start by choosing from a selection of diamonds, then the colour and carat of the metal, then the style of the setting and finally piecing it all together in the comfort and convenience of his jewellery workshop in Gerrale Street, Cronulla.
Working this way is also more cost efficient. Dallas can guide you through the process of making jewellery to your specific budget using his professional knowledge and stylising it proportionately to you as a person. He will be able to show you what the ring will look like almost finished without being committed. You can read: “Getting Engaged - The Hard Facts for tips on his website at www.dallasdesignerjewellery. com.au or call Dallas on (02) 9527 7000 for a free consultation.

Welcome to our regular section where Shine focuses on “My Street”. it is a local street that you may already live in or may like to live in. We do the research for you. The pros, the cons and how much it would cost to live there. Where: Prince Street runs adjacent to the beach between north Cronulla and elouera Beaches. it is a street in flux. To a large extent it reflects the changing face of Cronulla. Prince Street, and in fact the whole of the northern Beaches strip along Bate Bay, is undergoing the classic “gentrification” process. Old houses are being demolished to make way for modern beachside apartments. Why: Lifestyle. Cronulla beaches are a major attraction for swimming, surfing, boating, fishing and other recreational pursuits. The beaches on your front door stretch along Bate Bay from Boat Harbour in the north to Cronulla in the south. The area has been upgraded with a two year project to reconstruct the Prince Street Seawall. Further dune planting work to rehabilitate the area has also been undertaken. Cronulla boasts restaurants and cafes, many with views of the beach and a short walk from Prince Street. Pros: Sweeping ocean views and amazing sunrises overlooking Cronulla's beautiful sandy beaches. Prince Street is now secured at night. it has become in effect a gated community. 20

an easy walk to beaches, rock pools, cafes, schools, shops and transport. good value. Cons: not too long ago the north side of Cronulla was considered the “wrong side of the tracks”. Wise counsel by real estate people was to “buy as far south of The Kingsway and east as you could afford”. This street was home to nomadic surfers living in panel vans and VW Kombi’s each weekend. it could become quite raucous with street parties and cars doing burnouts. Those days are gone but it still becomes very busy. how much? Prince Street has a range of property styles to suit varying budgets. They range from original apartments to contemporary duplexes ranging from $365,000 to $3.5 million. expansive ocean views are currently on offer from a stylish three bedroom penthouse security apartment leased at $1,100 per week. The Bathers Beachfront Residences will transform Prince Street. now that most of the Christmas toys have been played with it’s time to get creative and back to basics, bonding with your children by colouring together. activities that involve colours have the power to develop and influence those abilities in children. When children take part in such activities, both the right and left parts of the brain are being exercised. What does this do? it helps strengthen and develop creative thinking in children. This is a good approach to developing the child’s innate character. Colouring can help develop your child, and the results are not limited to motor skills. it also encourages patience, which is tested whenever children try to colour inside the lines. Colouring entails awareness of their surroundings, which children turn to as they colour the objects according to how they see them in real life. moreover, colouring encourages not only “me time” but also sharing and bonding with other children.

Pilates .. for
Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a significant time of change for a woman. Tremendous changes occur physically to the woman’s body especially the pelvis as the body prepares for birth. Consequently, spinal, pelvic and abdominal conditions arise including separation of the outer abdominal muscles (diastasis rectus), decreased pelvic floor and abdominal strength, joint and spinal discomfort. These conditions vary between women and can possibly extend into the post partum period. Modified Pilates Programs can be a great method for women in their pre and post partum period to improve their pelvic floor and abdominal support and rectify the above conditions. However, close guidance and supervision are essential so that the woman does
not exacerbate any underlying problems. Women should seek advice regarding appropriate management for these conditions from their physiotherapist, general practitioner or obstetrician. For further information please contact Southside Physiotherapy. Phone: 9527 4099 or Website: www.ssphysio.com.au

The Hub When the Sutherland Shire’S neWeSt community centre, called “the hub” for the socially isolated and financially disadvantaged opened its doors at Caringbah, it brought a number of questions to my mind. don’t we live in a Shire abundant with opportunity and support? Where are these homeless people living? and why is this happening? There are a large percentage of young people who are in dire financial hardship. They are homeless and feel socially isolated. They suffer a lack of resources, particularly in the more remote areas of our Shire. The Hub is for them. it can be accessed by anyone and no referrals are needed. anyone can walk in, phone in, or be sent along by other services such as Centrelink. There are several projects currently in discussion, but as the “The Hub” has just opened its doors, the focus is on “gaps” in the community that other services
are unable to fill. One such project is working in partnership with the Bay City mobile Food Van who attends ‘The Hub’ on a fortnightly basis. They provide cheap groceries to Centrelink cardholders every second Wednesday from 11.30am – 1.30pm. “the hub” is open to all members of the community. They also have a training room available for other services to utilise. Open monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm; feel free to drop in for a chat if required. the hub is situated at: 38/52 President avenue, Caringbah (Cnr Willarong road) Phone: 9525 4971 or email: cchub@bigpond.com By Melisa George

splendid orchids Clever marketing would have us believe that the rose is the true symbol of love. In fact the orchid symbolises love in every sense of the word and they don’t have any sharp thorns to contend with. Corsages, given as a gesture of love, are often made from orchids as are wedding bouquets. Orchids have been around since the beginning of flowering plants and have adapted to almost every environment. They grow on every continent in the world except Antarctica. These adaptations have seen certain species use mimicry to attract pollinators with markings on their petals that look like female insects thereby attracting a male pollinator – pretty clever, and if I might add, quite a good move to attract a suitor! They’re resilient, tough and easy to grow and the good news is there is between 21,000 and 27,000 species and tens of thousands more hybrids and varieties to choose from in colours representing all the colours of the rainbow.
Many orchids can be grown indoors in a light airy room. A popular and long lasting indoor variety is the Phalaenopsis orchid, commonly known as the moth or butterfly orchid. I have had two flowering in my kitchen since August last year, they just keep on flowering. Growing in pots? - be sure to use good quality graded pine bark as a growing medium. Indoors - place the plant where it will receive fresh air and preferably north facing. They will love you for it.

Riding in the
Wolgan Valley
When the invitation came to visit the Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa I didn’t resist. We climbed aboard the new Toyota Camry and after a scenic three-hour drive from Sydney we found the resort set amidst the stunning scenery of the Blue Mountains. It occupies just two per cent of a 4,000acre conservation reserve and combines high-end luxury accommodation with the preservation of wildlife. Combine forty free standing cottages, each with its own private swimming pool and terrace, with world class dining and exemplary service, and it soon becomes apparent that the Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa is not just another luxury resort. The Wolgan Valley itself is composed of tall, almost vertical cliffs which contrast the gentle curve of the Valley floor. It narrows to a bottleneck where the 40
Shinemagazine2012
Wolgan River cuts a deep gorge through the sandstone. A private dirt road follows the river through the valley to the property. It is a beautiful drive where we gave the Camry a workout on the dirt road. It handled it all surprisingly well and we finally found the resort on a slope near the southern end of the valley, at the foot of Mount Wolgan. Horse riding is the ideal way to become familiar with the land. The resort offers guests keen to explore the reserve on horseback a Field Guide who will lead them on a trail of discovery. We were met at the Main Homestead and transferred to the stables to collect our trusty steeds. Mine was an ex racehorse named “Oscar” and we became great mates. A gourmet picnic
After a weekend in the saddle it was time to take the reins of the Camry and head her for home. was laid out in a relaxing spot by the river. After lunch the ride took an eastern route back to the resort following the Wolgan River with the sun setting at our backs. The extra time in the saddle lends itself to developing a bond with the horses. It is also a great way to observe the wildlife, with Wallabies calmly grazing as we rode past. The culinary skills of the Wolgan Valley chefs beautifully showcase Australia's exceptional food and wines. Guests experience the finest food and beverages Australia has to offer; all presented and served in an elegant fashion. After a weekend in the saddle it was time to take the reins of the Camry and head her for home. We comfortably delivered it back to Toyota covered in the red dust of the Western plains.

Post Holiday Season
detox
Welcome back to the normal routine of life after the holiday season. Many of us have been very naughty during the past couple of months. I admit I have! During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and all those Christmas parties, one thing is certain; there will be food and alcohol, and lots of it. This is a time when healthy eating takes a backseat. It isn’t pretty, especially when you’re trying to watch your weight, and if you aren’t careful, the Christmas season can set your health back in a major way. Not only have we not kept up the exercise, but any diet has gone out the window. Like most people I over-indulged. I would love to lie to you and say I worked out everyday and watched my portions but I must confess; I did not. I ate and drank like a fish and now my body is awash in toxins and alcohol. No wonder I feel listless and tired. If you can’t stop yourself eating all that delicious holiday food then your only option is a detox. It can help restore normal organ function and reverse the effects of all the fat and sugar you ingested over the holiday season. Now I am in total detox mode. Don't jump to any conclusions! I am not doing something radical like getting a colonic or doing a colon cleanse. By "detox" I mean that I am simply in diet overhaul mode. You might think this is just some weird New Year's resolution. It's not. Making simple lifestyle changes to your diet over the course of the year is common sense. After indulging throughout the holiday season there is no better time to start than now. Here are the “Twelve Commandments” for a DeTox that is usually recommended. Make them gradually.
Twelve Commandments for a Detox 1. Decrease fat intake. 2. Decrease desserts and sweets. 3. Cut down on snacks and eating between meals. 4. Increase vegetable and fruit intake. 5. Use whole grain products. 6. Cut down on alcoholic beverages. 7. Cut down on coffee, tea and cola beverages. 8. Reduce milk and dairy products. 9. Cut down on eggs. 10. Decrease meat intake. 11. Stop using processed meats. 12. Drink eight glasses of water a day. I have implemented a lot of the above changes to my diet recently. Surprise, surprise! I already feel a lot better. I am making the changes a little faster than recommended. Initially I had a wicked headache. Now I feel great. I can’t say that giving up some things has been easy. It’s actually been really hard because I particularly love wine with my meals. The only answer is to keep reminding myself that I am feeling better. Its early days but I hope it all lasts. My energy and motivation is back up. I am sleeping quite a bit better. Most importantly, I feel happier, healthier, and calmer. Give it a go! Your body will thank you for it. Shinemagazine2012
