you are what you eat

You are

What You Eat. organic produce Being a nurse and mother, Emma Cowley had always been passionate about an active lifestyle and healthy eating. One of the ways she managed healthy eating, along with juggling a family, was to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables on a weekly basis. This allowed her to cook fresh meals daily, based around staples with interesting weekly additions. 8

Shinemagazine2012

One of the problems she found was that she was continually disappointed with the taste (or lack thereof!) of conventional produce in supermarkets. A girlfriend whose daughter was diagnosed with autism introduced her to organics. They got together and fund raised for ASPECT (Autism Spectrum Australia) by making up boxes of organic fruit and vegetables to sell.

Emma's Fruit and vege boxes , packed and ready to be delivered.

FROM THEN ON SHE WAS HOOKED ON ORGANICS and has never looked back. There is much research and commentary on the benefits of organic produce. We all agree that our diet affects our entire wellbeing in a variety of ways. Our bodies draw the nutrients from the foods we eat to nourish and repair itself. The better our diet the better our body functions on all levels, even our emotions are influenced. If we flood our bodies with unnatural chemicals from convenience foods our digestion will be strained and our bodies feel tired and foggy. Healthy eating keeps our energy levels up – a kind of natural high!

of growing is more difficult. It has led to a higher cost of the produce in the past but due to its rapidly growing popularity the costs have dropped significantly in the recent years. Eating according to the seasons is an important part of a healthy and sustainable diet. It benefits your health, your hip pocket, the environment and local business. Food that is not in season locally will have been shipped from another part of the world. Eating seasonally encourages you to buy local produce, which will not only reduce your carbon footprint but also support your local economy. Fresh food in season is unbeatable in terms of taste. Shire Organics

Eating according to the seasons is an important part of a healthy and sustainable diet. It benefits your health, your hip pocket, the environment and local business. Consumers are generally becoming more concerned about the foods they are fuelling their own and their children’s bodies with. This doesn’t have to mean organic but we are all becoming more educated and thoughtful with our food purchases. We see this at many levels. There are numerous “organic babies” growing up in the Sutherland Shire. There are two key points associated with organic produce – the environmental benefits and the lack of ‘nasties’ used in production. To become a certified organic farmer there are many strict standards for the growers. They are subjected to regular audits. Let’s face it; this method

offer weekly home delivery of fresh, organic, seasonal fruit and vegetables. The produce is collected fresh on the day of delivery, boxed and delivered to your home or work place. Ordering is easy online at www. shireorganics.com.au or by contacting Emma directly. We look forward to all the tasty Spring vegetables and fruit hitting the markets and our boxes. Some of these include asparagus, tomatoes, avocado, green beans, sweet corn and cucumber. As well as Valencia oranges, blood oranges, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, mangos and the melons. Many chefs prefer to use seasonal organic produce for the obvious reason that “it simply tastes better”! SHINEMAGAZINE2012

MINDFUL not

MOUTHFUL EATING Develop your own EATING PHILOSOPHY and a MINDFUL approach to what goes into your mouth. It may be all you need to regain control of satisfying eating & drinking habits that shape your life. There is no denying that we eat and drink not only to feed our bodies, but to nourish our souls. Both are important to our wellbeing. Let’s consider a few questions that will help you form your own eating philosophy. WHAT PURPOSE DOES EATING HOLD IN MY LIFE? FOOD AS FUEL. This satisfies my hunger FOOD AS THERAPY. To treat myself FOOD AS SOCIALISATION. It helps me to share and brings me closer to others FOOD AS MEDICINE. I choose foods to heal

FOOD IS LONGEVITY. This increases my life span FOOD IS SPIRITUALITY. To experience ritual FOOD IS PLEASURE. To taste and savour Whatever the combination purpose you choose, it can be compatible with healthy living as long as it is done MINDFULLY. What this means is to keep conscious of the moment when you achieve the desired effect as a signal to stop or pace you’re eating or drinking. E.g.: your awareness will tell you when you are no longer physically hungry, or when the treat has put a smile on your face, or when the bonding has taken affect with friends. MINDFUL EATING relies on AWARENESS, INTENTION, & WISDOM. It is instrumental in CHANGING HABITS and is LIFE CHANGING! Gen Collins A GRANDMOTHER OF THREE SHARES HER WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY. "I started to feel better instantly as I found something I could do without adding to the injury…" The first time I met Gen Collins was training alongside her on a treadmill at Vision Personal Training Studio at Caringbah. She looked very fit and cut a nice figure for a lady in her 50’s. We got chatting about training and sharing our weight loss journey and I nearly fell off the treadmill when she told me she had lost over 23kg and came to Vision overweight, using a walking stick due to a knee injury and had suffered other ill health reasons causing her weight gain. Gen was advised by her friend and physio to find a Personal Trainer and lose some weight, as she was too young to have a knee replacement. “My husband rang around various gyms to seek out a qualified trainer that could help me and somewhere that I didn’t have to sign up long term, I have been training at Vision now for 6 years.” said Gen. The first step for Gen was her goal setting session with her trainer Sam Barnett and admitted it was quite confronting and that she felt quite nervous initially however this was her moment of truth. “Vision Personal Training becomes your home away from home, my role as a Personal Trainer is really to provide ‘hope & belief ’ for individuals whom are struggling with their health and fitness goals” commented Sam. Vision Personal Training offers a holistic approach to health and fitness with a massive focus on nutrition and lifestyle, something Gen thought she knew about but realized she didn’t once she got started. “I concentrated on the food program and kept a food diary and followed Sam’s exercise tips, I trained every day including two personal training sessions per week and went from a size 18 down to a size 10” proudly said Gen. Doing a sit up or push up took months 14

SHINEMAGAZINE2012

Gen Collins - after and left photo before.

however with encouragement and perseverance from her trainer and being shown things she could do without running Gen achieved her goals. “My goal was to get fitter, loose weight and be strong and able to pick up my grandkids and as a bonus I have made many new friends, feel the fittest I have been and just love training at Vision it’s such a great atmosphere” said Gen. Gen’s injuries had created such a negative concept of being able to make any changes to her mobility – however, challenging that comfort zone and guiding Gen towards positive changes in her nutritional and physical habits has seen a complete transformation and re-emergence of a beautiful and confident woman – that’s inspirational and I know what she has achieved has been the catalyst for peers around/associated to her to achieving their own goals – how could one not be inspired by that? said Sam. Vision stands by their promise of ‘Guaranteed Results’. If you don’t achieve your set goals during the first 9 weeks they will not only give you your money back, and they will train you for FREE until you do. Join the next 9 Week Challenge commencing September 3. Take a massive positive step and seek the assistance of a proven system in a friendly and motivating environment. Why Chiropractic

for Kids

AS PARENTS WE ARE OFTEN CONFRONTED with decisions regarding the health and well being of our children. Decisions such as: Should my child play body contact sport? Or should my child be vaccinated? And indeed … does my child need to see a chiropractor? A wide range of childhood symptoms respond favourably to chiropractic treatment. These include migraines, gastric reflux, recurrent chest infections, hyperactivity, bed wetting, fatigue, recurrent throat infections, arm and leg pain, headaches, asthma, poor co-ordination, sleeping problems, irritability, back pain, stomach ache, visual problems, digestive disorders, scoliosis and poor posture. Our childhood years are crucial to our development and the earlier childhood problems are resolved the less likely there will be permanent problems. It is not normal for children to have headaches or tummy aches or growing pains, nor are they likely to ‘grow out of them’. As children grow they experience falls and bumps which are inevitable parts of childhood. Just as they bruise a muscle, scrape a knee, or twist an ankle so too can they jar their spine. If left undetected it will progressively worsen with time. How can you be sure these small childhood accidents are not causing damage to your young child’s spine? The answer is: “You can’t.” Your Chiropractor can perform a spinal as well as postural examination. Postural clues such as head tilt, shoulder tilt, pelvic imbalance, a turned in or turned out foot, sideways deviation of the spine or scoliosis, perhaps an increased curve in the lower back can all indicate underlying spinal problems.

10 Reasons to take your kids to see a chiropractor... 1. To maximise your child’s brain & nerve development. 2. To enhance your child’s overall wellbeing. 3. To strengthen immunity & reduce the incidence of colds, earaches & general illness. 4. To help with colic & irritable baby syndrome. 5. To help with asthma, breathing difficulties & allergies. 6. To improve spinal posture. 7. To improve your child’s ability to concentrate. 8. To assist with behavioural disorders & offer greater emotional wellbeing. 9. To help alleviate bed wetting & digestive problems. 10. To assist with sleep issues.

Wedding Dress Styles for Spring

MAMM International

Local designers ushered in a new wave of au courant styles for spring this year. They were ablaze with bursts of colour to suit the more fashion-conscious shapes and silhouettes through to gowns that let their hair down — sort of. Colours are more painted than ever. Designers splashed their dresses with adventurous exclamations of colour, including afire reds, adorable blues, and of course the requisite conjugal whites. “You don’t have to accept a white dress anymore,” says Brides Fashion Director Rachel Leonard, “but it still has to be an “attending the ball” dress. The idea is to choose a gown that complements your tone, and not everybody looks great in white.” SHINEMAGAZINE2012

THE WINTER

Roast

A hearty dish of winter vegetables served with hummus and roasted chicken, beef or lamb makes a fabulous winter meal. It may be cold, wet and miserable outside but choose seasonal vegetables for a healthy winter roast. It is a highlight of winter in our home to relax in front of a roaring log fire after enjoying a great winter roast. Here are some top tips for roasting winter vegetables. • Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees C or 180 degrees fan forced. • Use a combination of pumpkin (skin on), potatoes, carrots, parsnips, red onions and celeriac. • Cut vegetables into chunky oven sized pieces. • Ensure vegetables are dry before cooking. • Toss vegetable pieces with olive oil, sea salt, ground black pepper and some fresh thyme sprigs. • Arrange vegetables in a single layer in a large baking pan. • Roast, turning once, for one hour until tender. For golden crispness increase the oven temp to 220

degrees C fan forced in the last 5 minutes of cooking. The vegetables which are in season and best now are: Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Celery, Fennel, Jerusalem artichokes, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Olives, Onions, Parsnips, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Silver beet, Spinach, Swede, Sweet Potato, Turnips and Witlof. Bon apetit.

baby buzz rock-a-bye

baby hire Shine talks to the owner of Shire based baby hire business Rock-A-Bye-Baby Hire, Danni Guerreiro. Tell us about your business? Rock-A-Bye Baby Hire is a Sydney based baby and nursery equipment hire service. We offer a wide range of baby and children’s products for hire, both for families at home and inbound travellers from interstate and overseas. Why did you start your business? Initially it was because of the experience of a few friends who had hired baby products while visiting me. They were disappointed with the quality and service they received. I saw an opportunity to provide exceptional products along with an exceptional service experience. Has starting your own business lived up to expectations? Yes. I have been overwhelmed by how motivating it is to work for myself. It is very much a “learn as you go” experience initially, but I’ve got all my systems in place now to make (most) days smooth sailing.

What is the biggest challenge? The biggest challenge is managing my stock purchasing – I feel like a kid in a lolly shop and want to buy the newest and best of everything! Do you have any children? I have one little girl, Ava who is now 8. What is the hardest thing about being a working mother? Coordinating customers’ needs and school hours can be challenging but we’re managing so far. Do you have any advice for someone starting their own business? Go for it. Sometimes, you just need to jump in and just do it. And don’t listen to negativity – if you’re certain that your idea is marketable, go right ahead and start.

Oral Health

for Kids

Programs that encourage good oral health for all infants, children and young people are good habits which need to be formed early. These habits will underpin good oral health throughout the life of the individual which in turn will support good health and quality of life overall. Some children have more decay than others and are more susceptible to decay. This can be true of children in the same family. These children would probably benefit from extra fluoride, which can reduce their susceptibility to decay by about half. Fissure sealing may also be recommended for children whose teeth are 'at risk'. This involves painting a plastic coating on the permanent molars. It is particularly useful for teeth with deep grooves which cannot be reached with a toothbrush. Thorough and regular examinations are necessary to monitor oral hygiene, dental and facial

34

development, the potential need for orthodontic treatment, decay risk and gum disease. "A prevention program is better than a cure". If preventative care is adhered to, children need not suffer dental disease. Limiting the number of times children eat sugary foods or have sweet drinks, and brushing effectively are the main weapons against decay. Children under seven don't have the manual dexterity or the mental application to brush effectively, so parents should do it for them. They’ll thank you for it when they are teenagers with a lovely smile!

Struggling to get the kids eating vegetables? Here are some tips to help kids enjoy their five a day. Increase your child’s intake by serving vegetables at snack time, lunch and dinner. Let children choose vegies at the supermarket; get them to help prepare vegies for dinner, or start a vegetable patch in the garden for the kids to maintain with you. • S how kids you enjoy your vegetables and that eating vegies can be fun. •G et creative when serving meals. Skewers with a mix of meat, veggies and dipping sauce can be fun and a great way to eat. • P raise your kids when they try something new – even teenagers! • Serve small amounts of new vegetables to reduce waste if they aren’t eaten. • K ids don’t need to like all vegetables but they do need to eat at least one vegetable from each colour group. That is Green, white, orange and red/purple on a regular basis. • Find more ways to add extra fruit and vegies with this informative and fun website. Click on the “Kids Only” tab to create a “Vegie Man” with your kids. This may inspire them to eat more veggies. www.gofor2and5.com.au/KidsOnly

giving back HOPE RESTORE and TRANSFORMATION Jacaranda Cottage celebrating 20 years - Melisa George Mission: “To facilitate holistic personal development that empowers young women to realise and reach their potential in life”. I can’t even imagine what it would feel like to be FORGOTTEN by my family, especially in my adolescent years. It breaks my heart knowing that there are many 16-20 year old women homeless or at risk in the Shire. Recently I entered “Run to Restore”.a 10km run along Lady Carrington Drive in the Royal National Park to raise money for Jacaranda Cottage. I cried the first 500 metres after the heartfelt welcome and the reason we were standing in the National park outlined on a damp, cool, winters morning. The aim is to raise money for a refuge and mentor program that is a necessity for many young Shire women. Jacaranda Cottage houses 3 women (for a period of up to 12 months) and outreach mentor another 10. “We want the girls to come out of here feeling empowered and good about themselves” says Chris

Byrne-Mikelsons the program co-ordinator. Initially these young women come from a background of family breakdown, poverty, domestic violence, abuse and neglect. “In everything we do, we want people to know that this is a private service. It is very confidential and breaks down walls and boundaries and helps girls learn to trust again” states Chris. Support from the community helps aid extra resources such as counselling and anything that isn’t covered by government funding. If you are looking for personal support by way of mentoring, need to have a chat or would like to become involved by becoming a voice, volunteer or raising funds details are below.

My baby stole my six pack!

SIGNIFICANT changes occur to a woman’s body during pregnancy and delivery, especially the anatomy and function of the abdominal muscles. Rectus Abdominis Diastasis is the term given to separation of the outer abdominal or “6 pack” muscles. This is a very common condition. The most significant changes to the diastasis occur in the first twelve weeks post partum. It is essential women have this correctly assessed and assist recovery of the diastasis with specific exercises and habits. If undiagnosed or mismanaged it can lead to further separation, lower back or pelvic girdle pain, continence problems and the inability to return to previous activities or exercise. This simple self-test will help you determine if you have diastasis recti. Lie on your back with your knees bent, and the soles of your feet on the floor.

Place one hand behind your head and the other hand on your abdomen, with your fingertips across your midline, parallel with your waistline, at the level of your belly button. With your abdominal wall relaxed, gently press your fingertips into your abdomen. Roll your upper body off the floor into a "crunch," making sure that your ribcage moves closer to your pelvis. Move your fingertips back and forth across your midline, feeling for the right and left sides of your rectus abdominis muscle. Test for separation at, above, and below your belly button. Women should contact their physiotherapist, general practitioner or obstetrician for correct assessment and advice if you feel there is a problem.

The Dark Art

LUDERICK FISHOS ARE VIEWED AS SOME SORT of angling wizards, conjuring up these banded beauties with their long wand, floats and green weed. However, it is an art well worth learning and not as mysterious as the wizards may have you believe. The excitement of Luderick fishing is in its visual nature. Luderick bites are seen, not felt, as the float darts from view as the fish takes the bait. A longish rod, a couple of stem floats, some split shots and small

hooks are all you need. Your float should run on your main line, a movable stopper above it to adjust depth if required. Below the float, a swivel tied to a metre or so leader with enough split shot to allow the tip of the float to sit just above the water. Luderick are best tempted with ‘green weed’. It’s hard to find. Good bait shops will have supplies when available. You want long stringy weed that you can tie or plait onto your hook. Don’t overdo it, as Luderick tend to nibble large baits. Target Luderick around ribbon weed beds and man made structures like wharves and rock walls. Burley up with a mix of cut green weed, bread and sand. Adjust your depth to find where the fish are and watch your float! When it goes, count to two, strike and hang on! Freshly caught, cleaned, filleted and skinned Luderick on the plate are respectable fare and well worth a try.

beauty lies not only within

Bikini

Waxing OK ladies, time to make the call to our favourite waxer before the layers of clothes come off and the bikini goes on. By Beauty Editor Cherry Ripe

NOT FAMILIAR Not familiar with the hair removal process or a bit embarrassed to ask about cleaning up “down there? Let Cherry bring you up to date. Brazilian waxes differ from regular bikini waxes because hair is removed from the front, back and everything in between. A "landing strip" is typically left in the front, but some girls opt for everything to be removed.

WHAT TO EXPECT Your body waxing will occur in a private room with a door. You'll be left alone to remove your pants and underwear and you'll be asked to lie on a table with clean paper or sheets. You may be provided with a paper thong. You can certainly ask for one. Because you only need 1/4 inch of hair for the wax to grab onto, your waxer may trim pubic hair. Hair needs to be a 1/4 inch if it's fine, a 1/2 inch if it's coarse. Any shorter and it's too hard for the wax to grab onto. You'll be sent home if your hair isn't long enough.

THE PROCEDURE The waxer will liberally apply talcum powder to the skin to keep hot wax from sticking to it. The best waxers are fast, which means less discomfort for you. The waxer will dip a wooden waxing stick into a pot of hot wax and then spread it onto your skin and hair. She will then apply a cloth strip over the still-warm 44

If you want to be completely bare, this is called a "Hollywood" wax.. wax, pressing firmly so the cloth, hair and wax adhere to one another. When the wax has cooled, she will pull the strip off, in the opposite direction to your hair growth, pulling the hairs out by the root. If the waxing is too painful, ask the technician to apply strips to smaller areas at a time. Waxing usually starts in the front and moves toward the back. You may be asked to help hold skin taut. Since the Brazilian means everything off except for a "landing strip" in the front, don't be surprised when the technician removes the hair between the buttocks. Yes, for most people, hair grows there. If you want to be completely bare, this is called a "Hollywood" wax. Once the waxing is complete, the waxer will tweeze out any stray hairs and trim the remaining landing strip. Some women even opt to dye the remaining pubic hair. The waxer may spread soothing lotion over the waxed areas. To keep ingrown hairs at bay, be sure to exfoliate the area in the days leading up to your appointment. Don't forget to get the name of your waxer so when you make another appointment you can get the same person and don't have to bare all for another complete stranger. Typically, you'll need to wax every 2 to 4 weeks. Trust me; the first time hurts the most. The more you do it, the less painful it becomes.
