Ouvéa Island New Caledonia
Ouvéa Island is a crescent-shaped island 50 km (30 miles) long and 7 km (4.5 miles) wide. Ouvéa is made up of Ouvéa Island, the smaller Mouli Island and Faiava Island, and several islets around these three islands. All of these lie among the Loyalty Islands, northeast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia’s mainland.

O
uvéa is home to around 3,000 people who are organized into tribes divided into Polynesian, Melanesian and Walisian according to ethnic descent. The Iaai language is widely spoken on the island. The two native languages of Ouvéa are the Melanesian Iaai and the Polynesian Faga Uvea, which is the only Polynesian
language that has taken root in New Caledonia. Speakers of Faga Uvea have fully integrated into Kanak society and consider themselves Kanaks. Ouvéa has rich marine resources and is home to many sea turtles, Manta rays, fish species and coral as well as a native parrot. The Uvea Parakeet can only be found on the island of Ouvéa. A large
crustacean called a “coconut crab” or “crabe de cocotier” can also be found on the islands. The large crabs live in palm tree plantations and live solely on a diet of coconuts that they crack open with their powerful claws. They are blue in colour and can grow to several kilos in size. They are a land based species and do not venture into the ocean. Genuine modern Kanaks!

Katoomba
The scenic beauty and tranquillity of Katoomba and the surrounding Blue Mountains area have long made it a haven for Sydney-siders looking for rest and relaxation.
K
atoomba was founded in 1879 when coal was obtained from the side of the mountain near Orphan Rock using a cable car. The Scenic Railway now operates within that original cutting in the mountain side. It is the steepest railway incline in the world and one of the most popular manmade tourist attractions in Australia. Adjacent to the Scenic Railway is the Scenic Cableway, the steepest aerial cable car in Australia. The Scenic Cableway takes you on a 545 metre ride into the Jamison valley. The views are breathtaking. A visit to the Blue Mountains would not be complete without viewing the spectacular Three Sisters at Echo Point. Admire the beauty of this amazing rock formation. The Giant Stairway is also at 6

Echo Point and you can take the 800 steps down into the valley if you are energetic. Leura boasts many gardens which are privately owned yet open at selected times of the year to the public. Leura Garden Festival and Leura Village Fair are popular events held in October each year. The natural wonders of Leura can be discovered via the many walks. A great place to start is Sublime Point Road. Here you will find one of the world’s most spectacular golf courses. At the other end of Sublime Point Road is Sublime Point, at 900m above sea level you will stand in awe of the view. Along Cliff Drive, bush walks can lead you to the Pool of Siloam and Lyrebird Dell while the famous Prince Henry Cliff Walk will take you to the spectacular
Katoomba Falls. Also along Cliff Drive you will discover Leura Cascades. Leura Cascades is a peaceful setting for a family picnic or BBQ. From the Cascades take a leisurely walk to several waterfalls including Leura, Linda, Lila and Bridal Veil Falls. In just under two hours from Sydney, you too can enjoy these gardens of tranquillity.

Mudgee is blessed with historic buildings, so slip on your walking shoes and set out for an interesting walk around town. It is described by the National Trust as “one of Australia’s finest townscapes in a country area”. Mudgee has a burgeoning wine tourism industry, based around 40 cellar doors and 20 operational wineries. As the state’s third-largest wine region, Mudgee has around 2,700 hectares of vineyards, with 12

almost 20% of this grown by the Oatley family alone. Established in 1858 and surrounded by picturesque vines and gum trees on the banks of Pipeclay Creek, the Cellar Door of Robert Oatley Vineyards, ‘Craigmoor’, is Mudgee’s oldest winery and vineyard. Not far from Craigmoor lies the ‘Montrose’ vineyard, home to the region’s preeminent winery and the heart of the winemaking operation for Robert Oatley Vineyards. Mudgee enjoys adequate rainfall and strong sunshine, but it’s the elevation, over 500 metres, that makes the difference. This altitude results in a longer, cooler ripening period than the nearest wine region, the Hunter Valley, which
although at the same latitude (32ºS) lacks Mudgee’s elevation. This gives Mudgee grapes a level of refinement and balance that enhances their wine. Summer and autumn days are very warm, with harvest time four weeks behind the Hunter Valley. This relatively warm climate has led growers to favour the red varietals – predominantly Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. However, there has been some encouraging success, particularly at Montrose, with Italian red varietals. Reflecting both the climate and world wine drinking habits, Chardonnay is Mudgee’s most widely planted white varietal. For a unique break, look no further than the Mudgee region. There is something for everyone.

significant local landmark is Mount Canobolas which quickly rises to an altitude of 1,395 metres from the local town. This gives it commanding views of the district and interestingly makes it the highest peak on the entire continent from that point west to the Indian Ocean. Just shows what a large, flat land Australia really is! Orange is a well-known fruit growing district. Funnily enough oranges are not grown in the area, as the climate is too cool. In recent years, a large number of vineyards have been planted for the rapidly expanding wine industry. The growth of the wine industry, coupled with the development of Orange as a gourmet food capital, has ensured Orange has become a popular travel destination. 14

The Orange region is good for grape growing and winemaking due to a fortuitous combination of soils, climate and temperature. These factors combine to produce wine of distinct flavour and colour. The climate plays the biggest part in giving Orange some natural advantages - the cool temperatures during most of the growing season coupled with dry autumn conditions are ideal for grape growing. Orange Wine Week is ten days of events highlighting the region’s premium wines through wine shows, tasting, educational workshops and celebrations with local produce. Experience the Orange region’s rich and diverse food and wine culture and meet the interesting and talented people who make it happen. Wine Week 2012 will be held from 19 - 28 October. Rothbury is located in the Hunter Valley just 10km north of Cessnock. The town is situated in the heart of Australia’s premier wine growing region and home to a range of vineyards, wineries and cellar doors. Popular past times in Rothbury include going on wine tasting tours, taking scenic drives through the vineyards and valleys, bushwalking in the national parks and visiting the historic North Rothbury monument site. But mainly, the Rothbury area is associated with just one thing: wine. The Hill Top Villas in Rothbury is a charming country Guest House which has been welcoming guests from around the world for many years. Situated atop the Molly Morgan Ranges, this secluded 300 acre property enjoys spectacular views of the world renowned vineyards of the Hunter Valley, olive groves and mountain ranges. An abundance of native animals, including kangaroos are at home grazing
with the horses and cattle. These can be seen when horse riding at Hill Top. Hunter Valley Horse Riding offers a great horse riding experience. Personalised rides are available; the sunset ride is a lovely time to ride and see the kangaroos. As the wildlife awakens and begins to feed, you ride along with the Kangaroos and Wallabies in the light of the beautiful sunsets. A dedicated, qualified guide who gives you assistance and guidance along the way will escort you. Horse riding is a great way to explore the area and get a closer look at the plants and animals.

Lord Howe Island is widely regarded as the most beautiful island in the Pacific. Quite a boast I hear you say!
H
owever nothing can really prepare you for the jaw dropping beauty of its sheer cliffs rising out of the sea, surrounded by an idyllic lagoon. On my first visit I arrived by sea and felt like some character from a Robert Louis Stephenson novel. After that first visit it became a family ritual to revisit the island with my young children each year. Listen for the squeals of delight from the first timers on board your plane as they too catch their first sight of Lord Howe Island. Lord Howe is the closest Pacific island to Sydney and yet still part of New South Wales. It’s less than two hours flying from Sydney or Brisbane off Australia’s east
coast. It is one of just four island groups to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for the global significance of its natural beauty and heritage. It’s a timeless natural paradise, where the pace is relaxed and where there are plenty of activities and adventures to choose from. Unspoiled, uncrowded beaches entice surfers, swimmers and sybarites. The crystal clear lagoon is bordered by the world’s most southerly coral reef. Just wander in off the beach to snorkel among colourful tropical and sub-tropical fish, turtles and other marine life. Or head further off-shore to SCUBA dive world-class

his famous Federation Speech in the Tenterfield School of Arts on 24th October 1889. This Speech ultimately led to the Federation of all Australian States on January 1st 1901. A town of four seasons, Tenterfield has a mild spring with a moderate alpine summer climate followed by a glorious autumn when the many deciduous trees display their russet-gold foliage. The winters combine warm sunny days with crisp nights. Tenterfield may be best known for “The Tenterfield Saddler” smash hit song by Peter Allen. It is an icon for fans of the late Tenterfield born entertainer, whose song was written about his grandfather George Woolnough, the Tenterfield Saddler for 52 years. The building is still in the main street and dates from circa 1860. The old ceilings wear over 130 years of tobacco stains, wooden floors are patched in places with scraps of leather and visitors can see the working conditions of 150 years ago first hand. Close to Tenterfield is an idyllic mountain retreat called Wangrah Wilderness Lodge.

a half million locals visit the area every year. Interestingly, only 225,000 overseas visitors put the area on their “to-do” list. A road trip is the best way to experience the Northern Rivers. In three days it’s possible to experience a little of what the area has to offer, but in reality you’ll only just scratch the surface. The Tweed Valley, just a 20 minute drive south-west of Coolangatta Airport, is a great place to start an exploration of the Northern Rivers. This is where you enter Australia’s “Green Cauldron”, the ancient remnant of the largest shield volcano in the southern hemisphere. The Tweed Valley lays smack bang in the middle of this giant caldera with the towering peak of Mt Warning as the major landmark. You’ll love the hundreds of tracks that are scattered throughout the wealth of National Parks in and around the Tweed Valley and its hinterland. Five world heritage-listed National Parks straddling the border of NSW and Queensland includes: Springbrook National Park, Lamington National Park, Wollumbin

One of the most popular areas of the Springbrook National Park is the Natural Bridge section. The Natural Bridge is a naturally formed rock arch over Cave Creek, a tributary of the Nerang River. This is also the location where the UK TV show “I’m a Celebrity - Get Me out of Here!” was filmed. This area of spectacular waterfalls, lush rainforest, ancient trees, impressive views and natural beauty make the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area an outstanding place to visit.

Melbourne
Melbourne is a city with endless options. The city sweeps you up into laneways and libraries, attractions, art galleries, parks and theatres with a vibrant atmosphere.
I
t is a modern city founded in 1835 by emigrant Tasmanians and soon swamped by a gold rush. When the world's largest gold nugget called the “Welcome Stranger”, weighing about 70 kilograms, was discovered in Ballarat in 1869, people flooded into Melbourne seeking their fortune. Melbourne's population is made up of people from all over the world. This cosmopolitan population has left an indelible mark on the city and nowhere is this influence more prominent than in the vibrant cultural precincts of the city. From Chinatown on Little Bourke Street, to Lygon Street's Italian precinct in Carlton to the Greek precinct on Lonsdale Street, a trip to the city quickly turns into a culinary adventure. Melbourne's famous tramway system is the largest outside Europe and a great way to get around. Stroll along leafy Lygon Street and
discover 'Little Italy', a place where Melbourne’s famous cafe culture was born. Beautiful Victorian terraces provide a backdrop for lovers of coffee, dining al fresco. A variety of cake shops and gelati bars tempt visitors as they spill out of the theatres, cinemas and galleries. Set yourself adrift under the starry lights of the Lonsdale-Russell Street intersection, in the heart of Melbourne’s own Mediterranean. Athens might be a world away, but bask in the sun or under the stars in the Greek Precinct’s al fresco culture and treat yourself to a tasty lunch, sweets or coffee hit. Lonsdale Street’s lively after dark atmosphere will excite those looking to dance to the latest Greek music or satisfy their late-night souvlaki cravings. Through the ornate archway and past the marble lions, you are transported to the clattering, chattering streets

of Chinatown, a world of dumplings, dragonfruit and drunken chicken. Melbourne’s own slice of Asia stretches along Little Bourke Street, from Spring Street down to Swanston Street, spilling into the laneways in between. Discover the multicultural delights of Melbourne soon. UNIQUE PLACES TO STAY

Olinda also offers stylish accommodation establishments which are tucked away in secluded spots along the many forest roads in the area. Many exquisite gardens can be found in Olinda. Hamer Arboretum which consists of a lookout, BBQ areas and 120 hectares of native and exotic trees. Following Silvan Road north through fields of wildflowers into the Dandenong Ranges National Park leads visitors to the popular Valley Picnic Ground. Other worthwhile gardens to visit include the 11 hectare terraced Pirianda
Garden and the rare and historic plants at Cloudehill Nursery. The Olinda Golf Course is one of the most scenic golfing venues in the area, offering sweeping views down to the Silvan Reservoir. The Dandenong Ranges National Park covers a significant area of Olinda. It offers visitors many walking tracks, BBQ and picnic facilities, and natural attractions such as the Olinda Falls. Olinda was the only settlement in the hills to be formally laid out thanks largely to the efforts of John Dodd. He opened

Falls Creek is a ski-in, ski-out resort located about 350 kilometres by road from Melbourne in Victoria’s Alpine National Park.
T
he nearest town is Mount Beauty, approximately 30 kilometres away. The resort lies within an altitude of 1,210 to 1,830 metres while the highest lifted point is at 1780 metres. In winter the Falls Creek village is snowbound, sitting above the snow line and giving visitors a true alpine experience. The picturesque little village has great facilities. Always popular with locals and guests is the Village Bowl. The traditional hub of the resort, this is the site of the first ski lift at Falls Creek and is renowned for its nightspots, grassy hills and panoramic views. During peak holiday periods the Summit Lift is in operation. It’s a great way to get a bird's eye view of the village and surrounds. Skiing is possible on the nearby peak of Mount McKay by travelling on a snowcat from the resort. Skiing at Falls Creek
is beginner / intermediate friendly, with almost 80% of the resort dedicated to these types of skiers/snowboarders. One of the best things about Falls Creek is its European style village. With quaint, winding, tree-lined roads this charming alpine village is a European style resort. For me, that is one of the great attractions of Skiing at Falls Creek – I can just ski home for lunch or a short break. No commuting required. Visit in spring and summer to journey along the Bogong Alpine Way which loops through Bright, Mount Beauty, and Falls Creek, then over to Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham. See dazzling wildflowers and collect farm-fresh produce and boutique wines to take home. Take a self-guided walk in the Bogong High Plains and breath in the freshest air possible. Along the way you can discover historic cattlemen's huts; fly-fish or row

Hanging Rock in Central Victoria, Australia, is a distinctive rock formation on the plain between the two small townships of Newham and Hesket, 70 km north-west of Melbourne.

anging Rock is better known from Joan Lindsay's novel “Picnic at Hanging Rock” and the subsequent film made by Peter Weir of the story. It is about the mysterious disappearance of a party of local school girls during a picnic excursion to the Rock in February 1900. The reason for the girl’s disappearance was deleted from both the original novel and film. This only added to the mystery. The Rock continues to be a very popular picnic spot for both locals and

visitors to the area. Hanging Rock is located within the local Wurundjeri aboriginal nation's territory. Hanging Rock is the centrepiece for the Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve, a public reserve. The reserve also includes a forest, horserace track, picnic grounds, creek, interpretation centre and cafe. The reserve is a habitat for endemic flora and fauna, including koalas, wallabies, possums, wedge-tailed eagles and kookaburras. The reserve is open to the public during daylight hours seven days a week.

Hanging Rock is better known from Joan Lindsay's novel “Picnic at Hanging Rock” and the subsequent film made by Peter Weir.
The Reserve has been host to many sporting events over the years including the popular horse races on New Year's Day which date back to 1880. The present race course adjacent to Hanging Rock was constructed and the first Hanging Rock Cup run in 1909. Since that time the “picnic races” have become a popular attraction for many visitors. Horse races have now been held at Hanging Rock for over one hundred years. The Hanging Rock Racing Club holds two race meetings a year on New Year's Day and Australia Day (26 January). It is thought the Rock was a refuge for bushrangers during the Gold Rush era – particularly the notorious “Mad Dan Morgan” whose name is attributed to certain features to be found on the walk to the Pinnacles like Morgan's Lookout and Morgan's Blood Waterfall. Take time for your own picnic at Hanging Rock and let the drama unfold!

Great Ocean Walk Apollo Bay is located between the Wye River and Cape Otway on Victoria's scenic coastal route, the Great Ocean Road.

t offers swimming and surf beaches, as well as a large boat harbour and marina which are home to a major fishing fleet. The town features a good selection of restaurants and cafes, and is situated along one side of the Great Ocean Road, overlooking a wide, grassy foreshore which fronts the beach. Overlooking Apollo Bay are rolling green hills, which create a scenic backdrop when viewed from the coast. Panoramic ocean views can be enjoyed from Marriners Lookout, at the northern end of town. It's a short walk from the car park along a scenic pathway to the lookout where there are views of Apollo Bay's town centre, the 50

harbour and beaches up and down the coast. In good weather the silhouette of the SS Casino, a steamship which sank in 1932 while trying to dock at Apollo Bay, can be seen in the waters close to the shore. The small seaside community of Marengo is located just south of Apollo Bay on the other side of the Barham River. A 5 kilometre drive north of Apollo Bay takes you to Skenes Creek, another small, scenic seaside community. The rugged and bushy Great Otway National Park, which includes a lighthouse at Cape Otway, is easily accessible from Apollo Bay, making it a great place
to enjoy the coast and the bushy hinterland of the Otway Ranges. Stretching from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles is the Great Ocean Walk. It hugs the scenic coastline, passing through beautiful National Parks. The walk is designed to allow visitors to enjoy short, day or overnight hikes. Take the chance to experience some or all of the brisk beauty of the Great Ocean Walk. More experienced hikers may prefer do the walk in a long trek, however mere mortals like myself do it in bite sized chunks between meals comprised of the local regions magnificent seafood.

ucked into a hillside overlooking a great swath of sea at Apollo Bay, these four striking villas bring luxury, space, and a great sense of style to the rugged grandeur of the Great Ocean Road, one of Australia’s national treasures. Beneath a wave-shaped roofline that echoes the ocean swell, these villas stand as a model of design excellence. Each villa has two bedrooms with spacious ensuites, a sitting room, its own spa bath in a separate room with sparkling ocean views, a laundry, and a generous deck area equipped with an electric barbecue. Among the highlights is an in-built espresso/cappuccino coffee maker, a plush leather sofa in the sitting area, electric blinds, a CD/DVD player with a selection of titles for each, a sleek modern glass wood fire, and ducted heating and air-conditioning.
Activities include scenic ocean or rainforest drives, and swimming off some of Victoria’s finest beaches. A popular trip, if you can tear yourself away, is the stroll along the beach to the Saturday markets in Apollo Bay, to pick up some ingredients from the fisherman’s co-op. Tariff starts from $328 per night. Tel: 1300 500 139. Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay, Vic Email: info@chocolategannets.com.au

Canberra
Canberra, Australia's capital city, is located in the Australian Capital Territory 280km south west of Sydney and 660km north east of Melbourne.
B
uilt in the early 1900s, Canberra was planned by American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, after winning an international competition to design the city. His plan focused on geometrical, circular patterns incorporating Australia's natural landscape. As a result, Canberra is one of the world’s few planned cities. It is a city in a park, with a kaleidoscope of colours turned on by the changing seasons. Discover the home of the Australian Story in Canberra. The city’s national museums and attractions hold and share the treasures of our nation. See our country and people through the eyes of our artists, and experience Australian character through sound and film, books and exhibitions. Celebrate Australia’s proud sporting achievements, delve into our political history, Indigenous culture

and reflect on our young nation’s experience on the international stage. Canberra is a fantastic base from which to explore the surrounding region. Explore historic townships, natural wonders, beautiful coastlines and the famous Snowy Mountains. Just 45 minutes drive from the city is Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. It offers walking trails, ranger-guided activities, Australian animals in their natural habitat, a chance to see conservation work with programs to restore threatened species including the brush tailed rock wallaby and corroboree frog, delightful wildflowers during spring and rich Indigenous and pioneer heritage. Also explore the purity of Namadgi National Park, a 45 minute drive from the city. Situated at the northern end of the Australian Alps, this park is
perfect for a picnic or bushwalk along the numerous marked trails, and to experience native flora and fauna. There is over 20,000 years of human occupation in the mountains which means it has been a natural destination for visitors longer than the Great Pyramids! The Indigenous rock art and Aboriginal shelters are easily accessible. Camping is possible in pleasant bushland settings with fishing, mountain biking and horse riding permitted in designated areas. Canberra is a “must do” for Australian explorers.

Darwin is at the “Top End” of Australia. It is a place of sunshine, beaches and hectic nightlife.
I
t has a reputation as a “work hard then play hard” town. The weather is tropical, with no summer or winter. Instead Darwin's weather is wet from November till April and dry from May until October. The dry season is the busy time for visitors to Darwin. Situated on the edge of a harbour bigger than Sydney's, Darwin is a beautiful, fascinating tropical city. It is a melting pot of people and cultures that prides itself on its friendly, laid-back lifestyle. While a modern city in its own right, it is also one steeped in history, one that has endured many hardships on its way to establishing 58

itself as the gateway to Asia. Darwin is a good base for visiting the Kakadu and Litchfield national parks. Exploring Darwin’s city centre is easy and best done on foot. Many Darwin attractions are easy to walk to. Wander along the walking and bicycle track around the city's outskirts and enjoy views of Darwin’s famous harbour. Darwin comes alive at night with the nightclub DJs and live music creating excitement; enjoy a meal at Cullen Bay or visit the casino at Mindil Beach. Visit the open-air markets at Nightcliff and Mindil Beach where there are stalls of unique products from local arts and crafts people. Try authentic cuisine from all over Asia or a good Aussie barbecue. The markets are alive with street performances – musicians, performers, traditional Aboriginal culture, recitations of Australian bush poetry, even whip cracking lessons! Tanunda is the cultural heart of the Barossa Valley, located 70 km north-east of Adelaide. A large rural settlement with tree-lined streets Tanunda is totally surrounded by vineyards. Settled by German immigrants Tanunda continues to have a distinctly German feel with sausage shops, German bread shops and German-style restaurants. Kangaroo Island is a pristine wilderness located off the coast of South Australia.

place of beauty and a place of escape, it offers protection to substantial populations of native Australian animals. Kangaroo Island (or ‘KI' as the locals call it) is also big and surprisingly diverse. Within its 155km length you'll find soaring cliffs, dense forest, towering sand dunes, wetlands and massive arcs of bone white beach. But just because it's wild, don't underestimate the welcome! Some 4,400 folk live here. Surrounded by fertile lands and rich waters, Kangaroo Island produces some of Australia's finest gourmet foods. 62

Gastronomic adventurers are tempted by the likes of freshly caught King George Whiting, sheep's cheese, marron, a unique variety of honey and an exciting range of varietal wines. You'll also find rich history and a thriving arts community. Kangaroo Island's coastline has everything from surf-pounded cliffs to becalmed coves, from famous sweeps of sand to secret rocky inlets. The possibilities for recreation are equally diverse - surfers, fishermen, wreck-divers, wildlife lovers and of course people who simply love to feel sand between their toes, all relish the Island fringes.
When Sydney University evaluated 10,000 beaches across Australia (rating them on things like clarity of water, privacy and cleanliness) Kangaroo Island's Vivonne Bay came out tops. Proclaimed one of

Australia’s ‘best beaches', Vivonne Bay is a long, curved, sandy beach superb for picnics, beachcombing, surfing and fishing. Experienced surfers enjoy the wonderful turquoise waters; fishing from the jetty, beach, boat or the Harriet River mouth is excellent. The beach can be reached by taking the road just past the Vivonne Bay store. Safe swimming areas can be found near the jetty or the Harriet River that enters the bay nearby. On the other side of the river, Point Ellen provides photographers with spectacular views of the Southern Ocean waves crashing onto the cliff-face. Some things in Kangaroo Island never change - friendly people, cool breezes, gourmet food, uncrowded beaches and geological wonders. Experience for yourself this quite unique place soon. Razzamatazz! Having just returned from Queensland’s famous Gold Coast, it never ceases to amaze me how “the Coast”, as locals refer to it, just keeps on going!
S
ome people like to write it off as “yesterday’s hero” but the Gold Coast just continues to go from strength to strength. I visit at least once a year and every time I come around Cook Island and Snapper Rocks heading north it seems as if there is yet another hi rise tower overlooking the beach. The Gold Coast is as popular as ever. It combines the razzamatazz of a city destination with the beauty of the Pacific coast. There is never any shortage of places to eat, attractions and nightlife. I prefer the more interesting south coast around the Coolangatta Tweed border area. 70
UNIQUE PLACES TO STAY
UPS#36_068-083_QLD.indd 70
Coolangatta is the Gold Coast's most southerly town and the gateway to northern New South Wales. About 25 minutes south of Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta is ideal for visitors wanting to escape the crowds. Coolangatta and neighbouring Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Kirra are renowned for their surf breaks and swimming beaches. Coolangatta offers family-friendly restaurants and is a short drive to the Tweed Coast and Byron Bay. The Gold Coast Airport is also located at Coolangatta. The Gold Coast is lucky to have this thriving region of Tweed Heads as its closest neighbour. It is the most
northerly town in the state of New South Wales and has more in common with its Queensland cousins than it does with the southern capital of Sydney. To the casual observer this area looks like an extension of the urban beach strip that denotes the Gold Coast. But the Tweed Valley and the coastal villages running south possess a character and style all of their own. They offer a more relaxed pace of life to that of the Gold Coast. Gold Coast holidaymakers get a three-for-one deal: the bustling coast, the string of seaside villages that make up the Tweed Coast and the lush rainforests of the Gold Coast hinterland. Nice!

The Pumicestone Passage Marine Park is recognised as one of the most important bird and marine habitats on the east coast of Australia. It is considered
to be the smallest estuarine area in the world that has a permanent population of Dugongs. Cruises along the passage give you the chance to see Dugong, Dolphins, Turtle, Jabiru, Swans, Sea Eagles, Osprey, and Kangaroos as well as some of the 360 different bird species sighted here many of which migrate from the Northern

urrounded by National Parks and only 23 miles from the Barrier Reef Island of “Lady Musgrove”, the area is renowned for its rugged beauty. It has long been a favourite spot for surfers and fishermen. Agnes Water is located on the sun drenched Queensland surf coast north of Fraser Island and south of the Whitsundays. The area promotes itself as the Discovery Coast because of the visit by Captain James Cook in 1770. Tight controls on development have enabled the area to remain a quiet tourist destination. The warm waters of Agnes Water mean that activities including swimming, surfing, diving and snorkelling can be enjoyed all 76

year round. The beach at Agnes Water is the most northern surf beach on the east coast of Australia. It is home to one of Australia’s premier long board surfing competitions. With so much national park around there is plenty of wildlife. If you are lucky you may see a dugong (Sea Cow). A dugong sanctuary is located nearby. Dolphins frequent the local beaches. Turtles come ashore to lay eggs from October to February. Hatchlings emerge from late December till April. Both Green and Loggerhead turtles can be seen in Deepwater NP. Sometimes you can see turtles swimming to shore from the 1770 headland. Wallabies and Kangaroos are To advertise or list in this magazine phone +61 2 8522 0008

With its wealth of natural beauty, pleasant sub-tropical climate and laid back style, it is not surprising that Agnes Water has become a magnet for people seeking the ultimate coastal lifestyle. Dramatic sunsets are best watched while enjoying a drink at one of the local restaurants. The friendly, laid back nature of the local people, coupled with a coastal village feel makes the Town of 1770 and Agnes Water the ideal place to relax. ere you can experience everything that is great about Australia - natural landscapes, calm turquoise waters, secluded beaches, beautiful weather, fascinating coral reefs, diverse flora and fauna. Having said that, Hamilton Island was a place I didn’t expect to return to. It was overpriced and poorly developed and by the mid nineties I’d had enough. Then the Oatley family took over. With a vision born of the best in Mediterranean style, they transformed Hamilton Island from the flagship of the 80’s white shoe brigade into an international resort island.

First stop for me will be the Hamilton Island Yacht Club. This is an architectural marvel. It is an experience just to walk in and stand at the bar. Is this really Australia? I feel that I could be in Monaco or Nioularge in the South of France, or Porto Fino or Porto Cervo in Italy. The place is different and oozes style. I’ll lounge on the Yacht Club terrace and gaze across Dent Passage toward Dent island. The whole island was purchased and transformed into a golf course with panoramic views of the Whitsunday Islands and the Cumberland Channel. Hamilton Island is the gateway and unofficial capital of the Whitsunday’s. It offers a wide range of accommodation and activities, all within a short flight from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. he Ni-Vanuatu people are genuinely friendly, happy and satisfied with life. Without modern conveniences such as running water or electricity, village life is simple. We could learn a lot from a culture where families care for each other. Where a community raises a child, supports its adults and cares for its elderly. Where the simple pleasures in life; healthy food, clean air, laughter and singing, unite families. Life in Vanuatu is simple but not quite primitive. Port Vila, the Capital of Efate, hosts international banks, money changers and duty free shops. You will find local clothing prints and designs, art work, jewellery, bags and shoes. Visit the Mama’s market and you will see the local ladies sewing hand painted dresses and sarongs.

The simple pleasures in life; healthy food, clean air, laughter and singing, unite families. Cafes and restaurants use local produce to create unique island cuisine. Eat your way through a variety of local fare such as lap lap, coconut crab, seafood and tropical fruit. Support the local villages by visiting the local markets and enjoy the colours, tastes and smells of village grown fruit and vegetables. The Islands of Vanuatu are surrounded by colourful coral reefs, deserted beaches and crystal clear blue waters. Each location offers something different. Quiet lagoons where dugongs wallow, black volcanic sands, white sandy beaches, blue holes for snorkelling, waves for surfing, deep water for diving among ship wrecks and impressive deep sea fishing. Vanuatu affects visitors in many ways. Everyone who visits this Island paradise is touched by the experience. The islands and people of Vanuatu have a charm that you won’t find elsewhere. Whether you are looking for an escape from reality, family friendly resorts, extreme adventures or honeymoon escapes, this island paradise has something for everyone. All within a few short hours air travel from the east coast of Australia. Vanuatu is culturally rich, interesting, safe, friendly, and affordable. It is “The happiest place on earth”. 86

DESTINATION + Huon Valley
Tasmania's
French Connection
Just 25 minutes south of Hobart, you will be immersed in a region of waterways and wilderness, art and craft, forests and fishing boats, orchards and vineyards.
R
ich in pioneer history, the Huon Valley, Far South and D'Entrecasteaux Channel are noted for an exceptional variety of landscapes. Southern Tasmania is the same latitude south as the South of France is north, but this is not the regions only link with France. Tasmania came close to being a French-speaking colony. French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne stopped in Tasmania for a only a few days in 1772 but Marion Bay on the East Coast still bears his name. The French returned in 1793, when Bruni d'Entrecasteaux visited Tasmania during his search for missing explorer La Perouse. Recherche Bay and 90

Port Esperance were named after his two ships and his own name was given to Bruny Island and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. The Huon and Kermandie rivers were named after d'Entrecasteaux's second-in-command, Huon de Kermadec. The town of Cygnet was originally named Port de Cygnes by d'Entrecasteaux due to the abundance of swans in the area. French naturalist and explorer Nicolas Baudin reached Australia in 1801. Freycinet Peninsula on the East Coast was named after brothers Louis and Henri Freycinet, who were part of the expedition. From the dark still waters of the tranquil Huon River and white sandy beaches of the Channel, to the soaring forests of mighty
Eucalyptus Regnans (the world's tallest flowering plant) and the wild and rugged far south, this region is a must see. The quiet country roads and short distances make this compact region easy to get around. Main towns include Huonville, Cygnet, Geeveston, Southport, Dover, Cockle Creek, Woodbridge, Kettering (the boarding point for the ferry to Bruny Island), Snug, Margate and Kingston. Those early French explorers live on through the names they gave to the vast sections of coastline, and some estimate there are as many as 2000 French expats in Tasmania who are proud of their homeland's link to the state's history.

DESTINATION + Lombok, Indonesia
"Hot" new destination
Lombok Indonesia
Lombok does not receive as much fanfare as its hugely popular neighbour Bali.
L
ombok Island is located east of Bali and accessible by air, fast boat or public ferry. The simple pleasures of sunshine, white sandy beaches and a unique culture make Lombok a perfect getaway. Many Indonesians vacation on Lombok for lots of reasons. Prices for hotel rooms, food and attractions are often cheaper and the island's scenic spots are still untouched. If you're going to Lombok think about a home stay. There are numerous options. Some differ from standard travellers' lodges only by the presence of convivial hosts. Many offer an introduction to fishing, farming or even hunting as practiced by the local Sasak people. You get a firsthand look at the preparation of
local foods and maybe a chance to join the celebration of a festival. Your hosts will show you points of interest not found in travel guides. The word Lombok means chilli in Bahasa Indonesian, so you'd expect the locals know a thing or two about spicy food. The green and red Lombok chillies are made into sambal — a fiery condiment — with locally grown Naga Jolokia peppers, garlic and shrimp paste. Sample it as an accompaniment to local dishes like ayam taliwang (grilled wild chicken) and sayur nangka (jackfruit curry). Lombok's beaches are second to none. Head for the island's southwest to escape the crowds. Surfers love the big waves at Bangko-Bangko (also known as Desert
Chillies drying in the sun

Point); if it sounds too taxing try the tiny island of Gili Nanggu, 15 minutes by boat from Tawun. Laze on a pristine beach that encircles the island, or go snorkelling around beautiful reefs. Public transport on Lombok is unreliable. Hire a car and driver at reasonable rates. Lombok is easily traversable and its roads are in great condition for Indonesia. The 21 kilometre coastal stretch from Senggigi to Pemenang winds past beautiful inlets and beaches. Other, smaller roads meander through rugged highlands, passing secluded waterfalls and verdant rice paddies. Lombok is Indonesia’s road less travelled.

New Zealand + South Island
Queenstown Queenstown is one of New Zealand's premier snow and skiing destinations. With justification, Queenstown is recognised as one of the most beautiful areas on the South Island. Apart from skiing in the winter, Queenstown is a major tourist destination with white water rafting and jet boating occurring on Lake Wakatipu and the excellent Shotover, Dart and Kawarau Rivers. Excellent views can be had from Bob's Peak above Queenstown and local attractions such as Queenstown's Underwater World. Excellent holiday accommodation abounds.
