Ratua Island

Scenically and culturally diverse, Vanuatu is the friendly face of the Pacific.

I

t has even been voted one of the happiest places in the world. The famous author, James A Michener, was stationed in Vanuatu during World War 2 and its beauty inspired him to write his classic novel, Tales of the South Pacific. Michener’s tale has gone on to inspire movies, songs, Broadway musicals and a legion of people eager to explore the Pacific. Today, Vanuatu’s 83 islands are still renowned for their scenery, with mountainous volcanoes, lush rainforest, lagoons and sandy beaches offering a stunning environment. You can climb to the rim of Tanna’s fiery Mt Yasur volcano,

4

sample the world famous diving at Espiritu Santo, enjoy a magical tour in the South Pacific’s only flying boat or just relax and enjoy the gentle pace of life. After just two and a half hours flying time from Brisbane, Australia you can be in Vanuatu. There are experiences here not to be found anywhere else in the world such as the Pentecost Land Divers (the first bungy jump) and the Toka Ceremony on the island of Tanna. Vanuatu is a “Y” shaped chain of 83 islands 2,500 km north-east of Sydney, Australia and 800km west of Nadi in Fiji. The islands range from towering volcanic cones to others covered in dense

rainforest to still others which are raised coral islands with wide beaches and deep natural harbours. The Ni-Vanuatu people are a gentle race of people who enjoy life’s simple pleasures in a country of unique and diverse customs and culture. The people of Vanuatu are predominantly Melanesian. The Ni Vanuatu people have populated the islands for centuries with more than 115 distinctly different cultures and languages still thriving. Vanuatu is recognised as one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. There are small communities of French, British, Australian, New Zealand, Vietnamese, Chinese and other Pacific >>

Islands people living in harmony with the Ni Vanuatu. Until 1980 Vanuatu, then known as the New Hebrides, was jointly administered by France and Great Britain as a “Condominium”. There are many reminders of the days when a gendarme would patrol one side of the main street and a London ‘Bobby’ the other. Within the island groups, many of Vanuatu’s tribes have their own cultural traditions and language, and tribal customs continue to play an important part in everyday life. In the capital of Port Vila, on Efate, you’ll find the French influence reflected in the superb wine and food. Many of Vanuatu’s islands are serviced by their domestic airline which means visitors have a wide range of destinations to choose from, each offering something different in terms of scenery and culture. Ratua Private Island is one of the islands located in the remote paradise of the Vanuatu Archipelago. It offers an escape from the modern world. On the tiny islet of Ratu, just off the southern coast of Espiritu Santo, it is your archetypal tropical paradise. Ratua Island is a wild, remote, magical place with people who offer a simple and warm welcome in a naturally beautiful environment.

he iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are the stand out features. Sydney is surrounded by national parks and the coastal region features many bays, rivers, inlets and beaches. The famous Bondi and Manly beaches may be the best known but Sydney has around 70 harbour and ocean beaches. The city includes many notable parks such as Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Within the CBD are the Chinese

The metropolitan area contains several national parks, including the Royal National Park, the second oldest national park in the world, and several parks in Sydney’s far west which are part of the World Heritage listed Greater Blue Mountains Area. I spend a lot of my spare time on Sydney Harbour just messing around in boats! Sydney Harbour is a beautiful

waterway. It’s a natural playground for Sydneysiders who use it for sailing, swimming, diving and walking around its foreshore. Sydney Harbour is a big blue playground, alive with ferries, yachts, launches and kayaks. Laze on a yacht moored in one of the bays or unwind on a cruise vessel departing from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. Sydney Harbour islands, including Fort Denison, Shark, Clark, Rodd, Goat and Cockatoo Islands, are great to visit. >>

I’m always surprised how few people make the effort to get out to them. Some islands resonate with Aboriginal history while others reflect a European past with convict-built structures and old forts. Cockatoo Island is one of 11 Australian Convict Sites that are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Sydney Harbour National Park includes most of the harbour islands and large amounts of foreshore which are perfect for harbour side walks. Sydney Harbour National Park covers a number of islands and foreshore areas around one of the world’s most famous harbours. The park is home to superb swimming spots, bushwalking tracks and picnic areas, which offer a range of activities that will have you coming back again and again. See native wildlife living in rare pockets of bushland once common around Sydney. We have seen a great rejuvenation of the harbours marine animals over the last decade after the city focussed on cleaning up the environment. A great example is the well known “Fairy

of the Manly Ferry. Take a walk and explore the Sydney Harbour Park’s cultural history. You’ll see everything from convict-built buildings and military fortifications to Aboriginal sites and a heritage lighthouse. With the harbour’s staggering coastline creating a natural lookout, the park’s jaw-dropping views have to be seen to be believed. If you’re at one of the park’s cliff top lookouts during winter, keep a lookout for whales on their annual migration north. Sydney has a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. The weather simply adds to Sydney’s reputation as one of the best cities in the world to live in. It ranks highly in various world city rankings and is often described as the worlds most “liveable city”. Visit Sydney and take the time to find out for yourself why.

The magical winter time of June, July and August is Yulefest in the Blue Mountains where many venues offer traditional Xmas style celebrations.

hile cold winds blow and the occasional snow falls, experience warm “Mountains style” hospitality, log fires, Xmas fare, singalongs and perhaps even Santa. The Blue Mountains becomes a true “Winter Wonderland”. Yulefest began over twenty years ago in Australia’s internationally famous Blue Mountains. It has grown to become the major seasonal event in the Blue Mountains and Yulefest is now enjoyed annually. Even if you can’t visit during the Yulefest season, the Blue Mountains enjoy four “European” style seasons, each with its own distinctive mood and style. Leura’s elevation of 985 metres leads

12

WE42#49_08-41_NSW.indd 12

to occasional snowfall in winter. The four distinct seasons allow Leura to capitalise on its gardens, hence the tagline, “Leura, the Garden Village”. Many events focus on the spectacular gardens, both private and public. Very early in Leura’s history, gardens were designed and planted in the style of English or European gardens. It became a popular retreat from the heat of the city. So the major events in Leura are the Village Fair and the Leura Garden Festival. It is no coincidence that the flowering cherry trees, in the centre of The Mall, bloom at Festival time. Winter in Leura has the chill and damp juxtaposed with gorgeous, bright, frosty mornings. While visitors to Leura huddle around the wood fires and the

warm hospitality of Leura’s interiors, the gardens will always draw one outdoors. An expedition into the crisp winter air rewards us with the exquisite perfume of Daphne, Witchhazel, Woodbine, and Wintersweet. Camellias with sumptuous blooms catch our eye and upon a closer look, nodding Hellebore flowers – a multitude of subtle intricacies of form and colour. Clumps of snowdrops with their simple and almost pure form and bright yellow winter Aconites all combine to delight the senses. Springtime is nature’s amphitheatre on a broad scale in Leura. Cherry trees on The Mall’s median put on their best show in October and crowds flock to Leura to celebrate the passing of winter’s dark and

damp days. The Mall is closed to vehicles for two days and the street scene is buzzing with over 100 stalls. Artisans and artists’ show off their wares, craftsman’s homegrown and handmade products are abundant, musicians and magicians ply their skills, while the street explodes with colour at every turn. For nine days in October, both the public and private gardens of Leura open to the general public for a horticulture feast. The Festival is a long tradition in Leura where the diversity of older gardens with more modern ones inspires creativity for your own patch at home. So slip into those gumboots, don a warm coat, wrap on a scarf, step outside and wander into the miracle of winter in the mountains. It’s a great opportunity to come up and enjoy the Blue Mountains with its cool mountain air, cosy fires, great cafes and restaurants.

What better way to relax than in the hotel’s Lobby Lounge with a Whiskey Flight by the fire? Choose from a flight of three different styles of whiskies, or a superb malt whisky perfectly paired with a matching dessert or bold cheese. Alexx has visited distilleries around the globe, spending time as a special guest at Glenfiddich and The Balvenie, while exploring the history and culture of malt whisky drinking in Scotland. Guests of Lilianfels will have the opportunity to share Alexx’s in-depth knowledge through detailed tasting notes supplied with the whisky flights. tretching over 70 km from Wisemans Ferry up to the Hunter Valley, Yengo National Park is a wild area of steep gorges and rocky ridges. The area is rich in Aboriginal and cultural heritage. Mount Yengo is especially significant to local Aboriginal communities. The historic Old Great North Road is an intact example of early 19th century convict road-building. Yengo National Park is recognised for its natural and cultural significance. Included as part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Park, the area also includes the Mt Yengo Aboriginal Place. Much of the reserve is declared wilderness. Local Aboriginal lore states that Mt Yengo is the place where “Biamie” departed to the skies after finishing his

creative tasks during the Dreamtime. The mountain top was flattened when he stepped on it. Aboriginal people have lived in the area for at least 20,000 years. The Yengo Park is criss-crossed with Aboriginal routes used by many highland and coastal clans, where reciprocal visits were arranged to exploit seasonally abundant food. The path of the historic Old Great North Road was an Aboriginal traveling route shown to surveyors by the local people. The land and waterways, as well as the plants and animals that live in them, feature in all facets of Aboriginal culture.

The Old Great North Road, which runs along the Yengo National Park’s south-east border, was one of the most important civil engineering feats of the early years of the colony. It was built using convict labour over the period 1826-1836 to provide a 240 km route from Sydney to the Hunter Valley. Today you can see spectacular and beautifully preserved examples of convict-built stonework in both Yengo and adjacent Dharug National Park including buttresses, culverts, bridges and high retaining walls. The road goes from Wisemans Ferry in the south to Mount Manning (near Bucketty) in the north, and

The Watagan Mountains have a rich cultural heritage with many Aboriginal engravings, art sites and shelters as well as the old log chutes and saw mill sites used during past forestry operations. The Watagans National Park is a beautiful reserve with moss-covered boulders and rainforests throughout. Enjoy the natural beauty of the Watagans on a bushwalk, touring by car or just enjoying a picnic. Walk amongst magnificent red cedar and Illawarra flame trees to Gap Creek Falls; enjoy spectacular views of rainforest gullies from Gap Creek and Monkey Face Lookout; or spend time at Boarding House Dam picnic area, set amongst large blackbutt and blue gum trees. Seal Rocks Seal Rocks is a special place on the New South Wales mid north coast which I have been visiting all my life.

M

y grandmother lived in Forster and our family visited every holidays. Now my mother lives there and I in turn have been taking my own family to visit all their lives. We escape the over development of Forster out to Seal Rocks at every opportunity. For decades residents of the fishing village of Seal Rocks have fought attempts to develop one of the coast’s most beautiful spots, battling to keep the place as it has been for six generations. They have resisted each push by the Great Lakes Council to tar the seven kilometres of dirt that winds through the forest to whitesand beaches and fibro shacks. That road has been the death of my cars suspension!

The president of the Save Seal Rocks committee is Bernie King. He is the last of the trap fishermen who use tractors and rollers to push-launch their heavy boats into the sea. The boats are stacked high with traps baited with sun-dried mullet. He says: ‘’When you drive in and you come around the corner and see the view, you just say: “Wow, look at this”. I agree! I’ve said much the same myself. Mr King lives in the camping ground in a hamlet that has only one little shop and is deserted on weekdays. ‘’What we are protecting is the last frontier, the most undeveloped piece of coastline in the state,’’ he said. It might be undeveloped, but it is changing. Seal Rocks is only 3½ hours >>

north of Sydney, and slowly its 70 houses are being bought by Sydney residents who are rebuilding them as multimilliondollar weekenders. Seal Rocks is recognised as one of the most attractive and scenic locations on the Mid North Coast. It is famous for its premier surf beaches, such as Lighthouse Beach, Treachery and Yagon. Its beaches are large, beautiful and untouched. A friend who spends his spare time diving and camping in the area tells me: “When you go diving you see a huge array of marine life. There are numerous species of sharks, fish species including Kingfish, large stingrays, Blackfish and Blue Gropers.” One of the major tourist attractions is the spectacular Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse that overlooks an unspoilt beach and the group of offshore rocky outcrops that give the area its name. The now iconic lighthouse was built in 1875 to highlight the treacherous Seal Rocks for ships, and it is the second-most easterly lighthouse in Australia, after the Byron Bay lighthouse. Another attraction of the area is the shipwrecks. These include the now submerged steamer “Koriki”, a paddlewheeler “Rainbow” and the “Harvester”, which struck a submerged rock. Below

Seal Rocks is approximately 1.5 hours north of Newcastle, 3.5 hours north of Sydney and 2 hours south of Port Macquarie. To access the lighthouse from the south, turn off the Pacific Highway 2kms north of Bulahdelah onto the very scenic The Lakes Way. As soon as I take this turn off I know I’m on holidays! At Bungwahl, take the Seal Rocks Road off to the right. It’s worth the drive.

NEW SOUTH WALES | Lord Howe Island Sydney

Lord Howe Island A Place of Rare Beauty.

“T

here is really no way of preparing the firsttime visitor for the experience of Lord Howe Island. That is because places like this are supposed to no longer exist.” So says a friend of mine who runs a small, boutique resort on the island. Volcanic peaks, verdant rainforests, white sand beaches, rolling surf and a tranquil lagoon combine to form an idyllic experience. Visitors have the opportunity to view prolific bird and marine life, as well as discovering the world’s most southern coral reefs. The crescent shaped main island is only 11 km from north to south and up to 2.8 km wide. Dominating the view to the south are the spectacular mountains of Gower (875 m.) and Lidgbird (777 m.). Its coral reef, on the southwestern side, encloses a calm turquoise lagoon. Giant Banyan trees and Kentia Palm forests spread across the island. Human habitation exists only on a narrow isthmus of lowland country in the central to north part of the island. Further north are steep hills culminating in dramatic sea cliffs. Balls Pyramid, a 562 metre pinnacle jutting up out of the ocean, is 23 km south-east.

30

WE42#49_08-41_NSW.indd 30

On December 14, 1982 in Paris the UNESCO World Heritage committee officially inscribed Lord Howe Island on the World Heritage List. Its “rare collection of plants, birds, marine life and exceptional natural beauty” were cited as key factors. More specifically Lord Howe’s endangered species such

as the Wood hen, its remarkable volcanic geology and being the most southerly coral reef in the world, made it highly eligible. The island is now protected and limits the number of tourist beds to 400. Lord Howe Island is a place of exceptionally rare beauty to which only a privileged few can escape for a weekend.

any descendants have ancestors who lived and received land grants before the island was abandoned and later inhabited by a second convict settlement and more recently the Bounty mutineers. Norfolk Island, after Sydney, was a major First Fleet settlement. On March 6th 1788 Lieutenant Philip Gidley King and 22 settlers including 7 free men and 15 convicts hoisted British colours and took possession of Norfolk Island. In recognition of Norfolk Island and the First Fleet, a week of special events will be held on the island to commemorate

the 225th anniversary. Highlights include an exclusive cliff-top lunch at the home of a First Fleet descendant and a full reenactment of the arrival on Foundation Day. Norfolk Island has its own unique beauty with majestic pines trees, sheer cliff faces, coral reefs and beautiful beaches. Almost one third of the island is devoted to National Parks and Reserves. Norfolk Island is far more than a picturesque island in the South Pacific; it is paradise with a past. What was once a convicts’ nightmare is now the tranquil home of the descendants of the Mutiny on the Bounty. There is much to see and do on Norfolk Island: see Kingston town which is a World Heritage area, outdoor re-enactments of the Bounty Mutiny (with parts played by descendants of Fletcher Christian), eco-tours, glass bottom boat coral reef trips, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, dining out in the numerous fine restaurants, bush walking, scenic horse riding, golf on what has been called the world’s most beautiful golf course, bowls, tennis, and squash. Take advantage of Norfolk’s tax-free shopping or simply relax and enjoy Norfolk’s peaceful existence. Norfolk Island is only 2.5 hours flying time from Sydney. Have fun!

ake your time and travel along The Legendary Pacific Coast, a 930 km touring route from Sydney to Brisbane. You could possibly do the whole trip direct in about ten hours but that would be a waste. Break it up over a number of days and enjoy the trip. You’ll see some spectacular sights along the way such as Ellenborough Falls near Wingham, Trial Bay Jail at South West Rocks, Angourie National Surfing Reserve, Nimbin, Byron Bay and the

dramatic peak of Mt Warning. Get back to nature in one of the 48 national parks or 12 state forests along the way. Bouddi National Park on the Central Coast and Booti Booti National Park in the Great Lakes area are just two examples of nature experiences you’ll discover along the drive. Heading north from Sydney along the Pacific Ocean coastline, this scenic drive takes you through some of the most striking landscape in NSW. An almost

continuous line of surf beaches, national parks and a hinterland of rolling green hills and friendly villages make this a great drive. There are plenty of attractions, good accommodation choices, adventures and fun for everyone. Make sure you explore Port Stephens and the Great Lakes area, but it really gets interesting as you head further north of Coffs Harbour to see Ballina, Byron Bay and the far north coast. As you move from Yamba to Ballina watch as the landscape becomes lush

and we get our first glimpse of sugar cane farms. Get an early start and drive to Ballina for breakfast - you’ll find plenty of stylish cafes lining the inner city streets. Now drive inland until you reach Lismore. Creative and cultural, Lismore is home to more artists and buskers per capita than anywhere else in Australia. Make time to admire some local contributions at the Lismore Regional Art Gallery. You’ll also find plenty of history at the Richmond River Historical Society Museum. >>

After Lismore, drive about half an hour to pretty Kyogle. It is surrounded by rainforest with two heritage-listed national parks nearby. Explore the Kyogle Botanical Gardens on the banks of Fawcetts Creek, check out the striking views from Captain Cook Memorial Lookout or drive the scenic Lions Road over the McPherson Ranges. From Kyogle head to the hip Byron Bay. Refresh with a swim in the luminous water. Take your pick of restaurants and cafes for lunch and, if you’re feeling energetic, try a walk to the Byron Bay Lighthouse - Australia’s most easterly point - for amazing views. Detour to Duranbah after Byron Bay where you’ll find Tropical Fruit World, the largest grower of tropical fruits in the world. Here you can taste a wide range of luscious fruits as well as enjoying boat rides, bird feeding and much more. Drive northeast to Kingscliff. From here you’ll have easy access to scenic delights like Mount Warning and the Tweed River. From here it’s less than 20 minutes to the golden beaches of Tweed Heads on the NSW and Queensland border. The drive concludes at the border, but with so many beautiful destinations in the region, you’ve only seen a fraction of them. It’s time to start planning for the drive back next time!

adventure or to simply enjoy the spectacular mountain environment. The Kosciuszko Alpine Way is a drive that takes you from Canberra to the gateway of the Snowy Mountains, Thredbo and Cooma in Southern New South Wales. It then runs onto the charming township of Khancoban and finally down to Albury on the Victorian border. Meandering through the spectacular Snowy Mountains, this scenic driving route has it all – charm, dramatic vistas, history and beauty. The Alpine Way includes the magnificent Kosciuszko National Park – a place of contrasts year round, boasting snow covered peaks, deep alpine lakes, giant boulder fields and vibrant displays of blossoming wild flowers. Kosciuszko National Park with 673,524 hectares is an area of outstanding beauty with

glacial lakes, limestone caves, grasslands and woodlands. In winter it hosts some of Australia’s best skiing conditions, in spring and summer, the mountains are ablaze with wildflowers and crisscrossed by walking tracks, many above the tree line providing spectacular views over the roof top of Australia. Mount Kosciuszko is the highest point in Australia at 2,228 metres. Count Paul Strzelecki, who climbed it from the western side on the 15th February 1840, named it after a Polish general who fought for the colonists in the War of Independence. Continuing along The Alpine Way through quaint country villages and towns, visit historic homesteads, enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic Main Range, rest by sparkling rivers, lakes and streams. Thredbo sits at the base of Mount Crackenback in the Snowy Mountains. It is a chic European style village which allows easy access to Mt Kosciuszko. You can access both the mountain and walking track to Australia’s highest mountain from here. Thredbo provides crisp alpine air and stunning scenery. Located 33 km from Jindabyne, Thredbo is a true year-round resort with just as many activities in summer as there are in winter. With its European-style lodges and accommodation, Thredbo has a genuine Northern Hemisphere alpine appeal. A chairlift, open year-round, takes visitors almost 600 metres into the mountains from where it is an easy six km walk to the peak of Mount Kosciuszko. Break

Having a weekend break is the perfect opportunity to explore a new town for a few days.

I

f you’re never visited Brisbane, put this vibrant city on your itinerary. Brisbane is a “Can Do” city and reflects a modern Australian attitude. The river is now a central feature of this reconstructed “River City”. Brisbane ranks highly as one of the most liveable cities in the world. Brisbane has an enviable climate. The weather remains warm and balmy during the winter months, making it an ideal place to escape to from the southern states when the chilly temperatures get too much. The Queensland capital has plenty

42

of fashionable shopping haunts such as The Queen Street Mall and Elizabeth Arcade. If you’re looking for something new and exciting, try the South Bank Young Designers Markets and South Bank Lifestyle Market, or take a stroll through the trendy New Farm and Fortitude Valley areas. The warm climate means that dining al fresco is a real pleasure. The South Bank has loads of variety. Head down to the Brisbane River and wander along its shores to find dozens of restaurants.

For a romantic meal with fine dining and wow-factor try Aria Brisbane, Ecco Bistro, Restaurant Two and Ortiga, amongst others. The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art have wonderful permanent displays and welcome top international exhibitions throughout the year. Brisbane is famous for its sporting events at the Gabba. South Bank is the social and entertainment hub for many Brisbane events including comedy and theatre events. Erected in 2008, the Wheel

of Brisbane has become a land mark. Sit in air conditioned comfort with views around Brisbane as the world rotates below. There is an extensive network of shared cycle and pedestrian paths along both sides of the Brisbane River and elsewhere. This is a great way to see the city skyline and river, and healthy as well! Valet Cycle Hire will drop off your bikes to your Brisbane Boutique Hotel with suggested bike tours. Brisbane is a great city for walking. Walk down to the Botanical Gardens and explore the lakes and forests, or walk along the river through the mangroves. Walk across the Goodwill Bridge to admire the Brisbane River and city skyline. At Southbank you can walk through 17 hectares of sub-tropical gardens and rainforest, or swim at the city beach while enjoying stunning CBD and river views. From echidnas to emus, wombats to wild lorikeets, kangaroos to koalas, Lone Pine is one of Australia’s oldest and best known animal sanctuaries. Brisbane has a very few heritage buildings that have been beautifully restored as boutique hotels. These typically have modern amenities and luxury facilities. They have more space than other hotel rooms and come with a special ambiance. Situated in the heart of the city, the heritage listed Royal Albert Hotel is one of the best located of the boutique hotels in Brisbane. It makes a great Brisbane base.

It is 160 km north of Brisbane via the Bruce Highway and the Sunshine Motorway. Blessed with the environmental foresight of earlier councils, Noosa set aside 4,000 hectares to form Noosa National Park. It is 4,000 hectares of natural bush land with a winding coastal track that follows unspoilt

headlands from Noosa to Sunshine Beach. Walk along the track most mornings and you will be greeted by surfers running to get amongst some of the best surf anywhere in the world. Surfing at Noosa starts at Sunshine Beach and continues right around the national parks coastline and onto the North shore. It is a distance of approximately 12 km. The only way to get to these surf spots is to walk. It helps keep the crowds at bay. The Coastal track passes over several headlands and provides spectacular coastal views. You can walk the Coastal track from Noosa to Sunshine Beach and catch a bus back. Lace monitors, honeyeaters and koalas may be seen while you are walking

or in the picnic area. Early mornings and dusk provide good opportunities for bird watching and wildlife observation. Between June and November, humpback whales can be glimpsed as they cruise past the coastline on their way to and from northern breeding grounds. The best spots to watch the whales are Dolphin Point and Hell’s Gates. Turtles and dolphins are also often seen from these points. I take my friends and family along this boardwalk and point out Koalas living in the trees above. Koalas in the wild are a rare sight elsewhere. After all this surfing and walking you deserve to relax with a good meal. When only the best will do, with a dedication to

the absolute best of everything, berardo’s restaurant and bar awaits. I love it and always book a table when in town. Mounted against a chic palette of white and oozing taste and style, berardo’s is the place to eat and the place to be seen. Jim Berardo and Greg O’Brien started berardo’s over ten years ago with a passion for food and a passion for Noosa. At both Berardo’s restaurant and its casual dining sister, Berardo’s on the beach, Jim and Greg offer the Noosa food scene a unique recipe of sensational food mixed with style and panache – “the theatre of dining”. Jim and Greg are also the founders of the fabulous Noosa Food and Wine Festival. It is Australia’s favourite

Laid-back and leafy, Noosa is ideal for a rejuvenating getaway at any time of year. Beautiful beaches and waterways are bordered by national parks and forests, making it the perfect place for outdoor adventures and a range of touring choices. I have been travelling “up the coast” to Noosa every year for many years and have developed my own personal therapeutic routine: Eat, Sleep, Surf, Sun, Eat, Sleep, Surf, Sun, etc, etc. Works a treat! It’s not all about relaxation in Noosa. From beachfront horse rides and hitting the waves on a board, to boating experiences, cooking schools or a round of golf, there’s something just right for all levels of adventure. Holidays are also about treating yourself to the good things in life and leaving your daily worries behind, and there are plenty of pampering possibilities in Noosa! Noosa has a range of world class health and wellbeing services on offer. Some people visit Noosa so often that they decide to simply move there, including some of the world’s most talented restaurateurs and chefs. People like expatriate New Yorker Jim Berardo, doyen of Noosa restaurateurs whose establishments are a regular part of my Noosa regime. They have given the seaside haven, already known for its cuisine, a delicious new flavour. Dine beachside with ocean views and sea breezes, wind down with a relaxing meal overlooking the Noosa River or get amongst the eclectic choices in Sunshine or Peregian Beach. Indulge in some holiday retail therapy at stylish boutiques and outdoor markets. Noosa’s annual calendar of events means there really is something to celebrate all year around. From sporting and music events to the arts and food and wine, Noosa makes a festival of all the best things in life!

Awardwinning restaurants; local wines, cheeses and other produce; relaxed shopping; fantastic art galleries; arts and crafts by internationally renowned artists; incredible scenery and national parks; rainforests and waterfalls. The main towns in the region are Montville, Maleny, Eumundi, Yandina and Kenilworth. The area is made up of the spectacular Glass House Mountains, the Blackall Ranges, the Noosa Hinterland, Mary Valley and several National Parks. The area lies an hour north of Brisbane or 30 minutes inland from Noosa. It has an average elevation of 450 metres, ensuring a cooler climate that offers unique

attractions in the different seasons. The charming towns and villages are rich with skilled artisans and vibrant businesses, all passionate about their local community and environment. The towns perch on or behind the escarpment and have restaurants, wineries, alternativestyle eateries and produce stores, art galleries, boutiques and curiosity shops. Maleny is situated in the heart of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and is often described as being “100 kilometres north of Brisbane and a thousand kilometres from care”. The Glasshouse Mountains, verdant green hills and sub-tropical climate help make this an area that attracts tourists

QUEENSLAND | Port GoldDouglas Coast

The Attraction of Port Douglas and Port Douglas attractions

It’s best to admit up front that I’m a warm weather person. The winter season is not for me!

S

o it became an annual winter holiday event to escape the chill winds of a southern winter and rent a house in tropical Port Douglas, Far North Queensland. It contributed greatly to our family’s health. While avoiding winter we also avoided the potential communication, political, financial, health and safety problems of an extended stay in an overseas, tropical, third world country. Yet here in Port Douglas we were living in the tropics in a wonderful beach house. There are many

54

WE42#49_42-57_QLD.indd 54

fabulous houses to choose from. Friends, family and even employees flew in for the weekend. I happily wrote away in Port Douglas and, living in the same time zone, I was just a domestic call away from friends, family, the office and clients. There are many attractions to a stay in Port Douglas. Here are my favorites: The Great Barrier Reef: Port Douglas is the closest mainland town to the Great Barrier Reef. I found it unbelievable that we could go out to the reef deep sea fishing, snorkelling, picnicking or diving so easily.

It opened up a whole new world. Sunday Markets: This is a favorite of my wife and daughters actually! Open every Sunday, the markets offer a huge range of local arts and crafts. These colourful seaside markets are a reflection of the local artists, farmers, tradesmen and craftsmen. Art Galleries: Interesting art by local artists. Local galleries are: Archiart Tropical, Candlenut Gallery, Mowbray Gallery and The Marina Gallery. Four Mile Beach: The main beach that runs along the eastern side of Port >>

Douglas. The beach is wide and is a great place for families to enjoy the sun. Flagstaff Hill: From this vantage point you can get the best views of Port Douglas and Four Mile Beach. It is an easy walk to the top and with gentle sea breezes the walk is quite relaxing. Marina Mirage: Grab a bite to eat, relax with a few drinks or enjoy a romantic dinner looking over Dickson’s Inlet and the Mossman Ranges. Here you’ll find the yachts and boats moored that run from Port Douglas out to the Great Barrier Reef. Sailing and Kite surfing: Recently kite surfers have discovered Port Douglas. From June to August the Trade Winds blow from the south and generate strong winds perfect for kite surfing and yacht racing.

56

Here in Port Douglas we were living in the tropics in a wonderful beach house. Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary: In the rainforest, woodlands, grasslands and wetlands areas you have the chance to see over 180 species of animal and insect.

Saint Mary’s by the Sea: This church has now become a popular wedding venue. A huge window behind the alter offers fantastic views of the Coral Sea and distant mountains. The church even comes complete with wooden pews and a church bell. Golf: There are several courses in Port Douglas. The Mirage Country Club at the Sheraton Mirage Resort, the Sea Temple Golf & Country Club, and The Links at Mantra Links are all beautifully designed and maintained. Restaurants: Last but not least there are some great places to eat. My favourites are the Star of Siam Thai in the main street, the Courthouse Bistro upstairs in the Courthouse pub and the famous Mocka’s Pies. Mmmm – get me back to Port quick!

The Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage listed stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool.

t winds through varying terrain alongside the coast, and provides access to several prominent landmarks including the Twelve Apostles limestone stack formations. A nice place to stop over is Apollo Bay at the foothills of the Otway Ranges. From here you can explore the Great Ocean Road region, the 12 Apostles or stopover during the Great Ocean Walk. It is a great stop over while driving one of the world’s iconic scenic touring routes spanning 243 kilometers along the stunning coastline of Victoria. Stop over and trek the Great Ocean Walk from Apollo Bay to the magnificent 12 Apostles

and weave through beautiful parks, deserted beaches and rugged coastline. Swim in the clear water, sea kayak with local seals, indulge in some deepsea fishing, learn to surf or horse ride along the beach at sunset. Fishing is an important local industry and seafood is always on the menu at the local cafés and restaurants. For great views over dinner try Chris’s at Beacon Point, high in the hills overlooking the sea. Shop for art and curios in the many gift shops, galleries and tea houses and peruse the regular Saturday foreshore market for local crafts and produce. The 12 Apostles are located 275 kilometres west of Melbourne or about a four-hour drive along the Great Ocean Road. Witness the rugged splendor of

the famous 12 Apostles, magnificent rock stacks that rise up from the Southern Ocean on Victoria’s dramatic coastline of Limestone cliffs. They have been created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland beginning 10-20 million years ago. The stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 meters high were left isolated from the shore. View the 12 Apostles at sunrise and sunset as they change colour from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun. Some of the other attractions along this remarkable stretch of coastline are: Gibsons Steps: Take 86 steps down >>

The Bay of Islands are rock stacks that tower from the ocean in the Bay of Islands creating a haunting natural landscape. The Otway Ranges contain some of Australia’s best rainforest scenery set amongst tall trees, ancient plant life and lush ferns. Head to the Otways to find mainland Australia’s oldest lighthouse. Explore nearby forest and waterfall walks or enjoy an exhilarating ride through the ranges on a mountain bike. Take a treetop walk along the Otway Fly and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the spectacular Otway Ranges. Spot native wildlife such as glow worms at Melba Gully, elusive platypus at Lake Elizabeth or koalas at nearby Kennet River. The Great Ocean road is a “must do” weekend away drive with Apollo Bay being the perfect place to stay and break up the trip. It boasts ocean beaches, a boat harbour, golf courses, fine dining, wineries, excellent fishing and, of course, the Great Ocean Walk.

Yarra Glen Yarra Glen is home to 3,500 friendly folk who seemingly all want to share their idyllic valley with you and showcase their achievements in agriculture, food and wine making.

T

he area is the perfect destination for a weekend away from Melbourne and particularly for a couple looking for a gourmet food and wine trip. Nestled between the Yarra River and the foothills of the Great Dividing Range with nearby Kinglake National Park and Toolangi State Forest, Yarra Glen is only 50 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. The natural landscape varies from the Billabongs by the river, to pasture for cows and horses, and of course the many vineyards, all with a backdrop

of wooded mountain slopes providing shelter for Kangaroos and Cockatoos. The attractive tree-lined commercial centre of Yarra Glen includes the prominent landmark of the Grand Hotel, built in 1888. A reserve is located along the northern bank of the Yarra River, including the town’s showgrounds, sports ovals and picnic areas. It is particularly attractive in autumn. Yarra Glen is set amongst the rolling hills of the fertile Yarra Valley and home to a large number of vineyards. Yering Station, just south of the town centre on the Melba Highway, was Victoria’s first vineyard and features beautiful gardens, a winery complex and the historic Chateau Yering built in 1854. Following the Melba Highway north of Yarra Glen takes travelers to the De Bortoli winery. It is one of the regions largest with over 240 hectares of vines, a cellar door, restaurant and beautifully landscaped

grounds. The Sugarloaf Reservoir, located west of Yarra Glen in neighboring Christmas Hills, includes several picnic and BBQ areas, walking tracks, and lookouts at the dam wall. Vineyards have been in the Yarra Valley since Victoria’s first vineyard was planted by the Ryrie Brothers at Yering Station in 1838. Yarra Valley wines are Cool Climate wines grown in an area of mixed soil types, starting 45 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD and encompassed by the towns of Whittlesea, Kinglake, Toolangi, McMahon’s Creek, Powelltown, Gembrook & Belgrave. The area contains 2,500 hectares of vines. The main grape varieties are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in Whites and Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in reds. Over 40 wine varieties and blends (including organic, kosher & some nongrape wines) are produced by over 100 wineries in the area. >>

The Yarra Valley Food Trail also runs through the area. It includes “Farm Gate” sales of seasonal produce, markets, specialty food shops, cafes and restaurants that use local produce. There are great restaurants and cafes all over the area. Eleonores at Chateau Yering provides fine dining in an elegant setting. There are also great restaurants and cafes associated with most of the wineries, as well as many independent restaurants and cafes throughout the Valley. You can have degustation meals, wonderful breakfasts, lunches and dinners or just a platter featuring local produce. You will find simple food, slow food, food that is only limited by the chef ’s imagination, and all of it delicious. The Yarra Valley is known primarily as a wine region, however visitors are often surprised by the quality of the food. It would be hard to leave the Valley whilst still hungry, and you can take home some wonderful local produce to prolong your ‘food and wine’ experience!

Auckland and Waiheke Island

In the heart of Auckland’s sparkling Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island is a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves.

A

n island of spectacular beauty, Waiheke is renowned for its award winning vineyards, unique art, stylish cafes, and stunning beaches. Waiheke is just a 35-minute or 19 km ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke Island boasts a subtropical climate and 100 km of sparkling coastline and emerald waters. At 12 miles long, it is the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf. Waiheke is also the most populated and most accessible of the Hauraki Gulf Islands. Waiheke has a diverse landscape, and is home to historic reserves, working farmland and bustling villages. From rugged bush-clad bays to white-sand beaches, Waiheke’s scenic coastline boasts a diverse range of waterside retreats. Whether you’re after a quiet hideaway or lively water sports, Waiheke has plenty to offer. Socially, the island is highly diverse. With a large population of writers, poets, artists, musicians, scientists and actors, Waiheke is one of New Zealand’s most important artistic centres. Local and international artists have chosen Waiheke as the base for their studios, and visitors

66

can see a mix of sculptures, ceramics and paintings. Waiheke has gained a reputation as a gourmet food destination, and boasts a great range of wineries, restaurants and cafes. With hot, dry summers and stony soils, Waiheke is perfect for a variety of grapes. Boutique wineries produce high-quality wines, including cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, cabernet franc

and more recently, chardonnay. Waiheke’s vineyards, wineries and olive groves are spread across the island, and many offer tasting sessions. Discovered and settled by Maori approximately 1000 years ago, Waiheke translates to “cascading waters”. Some Maori legends say that one of the pioneering waka (canoes) to New Zealand came upon the island. Signs of Maori

Archeological sites are scattered over the island including more than forty pa sites, cooking pits and terraced areas. Located on the eastern tip of Waiheke is Stony Batter, a historic WWII defense complex that is accessible by a countryside walk. It offers striking views of the Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel Peninsula. Stony Batter is open to visitors, who can walk through the network of underground tunnels and chambers that link to gun emplacements. Waiheke Island is considered by many to be a great part of the Auckland experience. When you arrive on the island you can pick up a rental car, taxi or simply take a tour. Visit some of the beautiful beaches and native forest reserves which harmonise with the cafes, vineyards, olive groves and art studios. There is a slower pace of life on the island than in the city of Auckland across the water. This makes it a great place to relax and unwind. They say you lose ten years the moment you step ashore on Waiheke Island. A weekend on Waiheke could therefore be good for your complexion! Lets hope so!

The South Island contains New Zealand’s premier ski resorts: Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Treble Cone, Cardrona and Mt Hutt.

T

he ski resorts in New Zealand offer premier snow, the longest season in Australasia, and a variety of terrain. Many of the resorts are located within close driving distance of one another so you can ski and snowboard at all the resorts. Queenstown truly is the queen of the south island resort towns. It is the Southern Hemisphere’s premier four season lake and alpine resort. Surrounded by majestic mountains and nestled on the shores of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown’s stunning scenery is both inspiring and revitalizing. The town is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu, and has

Queenstown spectacular views of nearby mountains such as The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and just above the town; Ben Lomond and Queenstown Hill. With such a huge range of activities in Queenstown, no two days will ever be the same. Come to experience the aweinspiring scenery, search for adventure, seek out relaxation and rejuvenation, or just breathe the pure mountain air. Adventurers, filmmakers, wine enthusiasts, Hollywood stars and US Presidents have all been drawn to this magical region and its intense alpine energy. Queenstown is renowned for incredible adventure activities. Apart from skiing and snowboarding, you could try bungy

jumping, paragliding, sky diving, canyon swinging, jet boating, horse trekking and river rafting! If you want something a little more relaxed, experience one of the many walking and hiking trails, sightseeing tours or indulge yourself with spa treatments, boutique shopping and excellent food and wine. Apart from the winter sports, nearly all activities can be enjoyed all year round - Queenstown’s a four season resort with distinct and beautiful seasons. One hundred and forty years after Queenstown’s establishment as a gold mining camp, central Queenstown has transformed into a sophisticated and cosmopolitan town. There’s a permanent

The area around Queenstown, Central Otago, is a powerful landscape, sunny, dry and brown with weathered ancient mountains, alpine herb fields and fast flowing rivers. In the 1860’s this was a place of gold; you can still pan for it, in amongst the miners’ old trails, stone cottages and relics of mine machinery. But the gold today, in Central Otago, is wine. Pinot noir, that most fickle of grape varieties, excels in these southernmost vineyards and most of the wineries will welcome you for tours and tastings. So after a day of adventures, settle down to

Personally, I have left work on a Friday afternoon and have been sitting in front of a roaring log fire overlooking snow covered mountains in Queenstown by 8pm. All possible!
