Fine Dining

South Coast Celebrates

Stein

Fine Dining comes to The South Coast with Rick Stein’s seafood restaurant.

B

ritish-born Rick Stein was looking for something in the holiday hamlet of Mollymook. The unassuming 62-year-old walked into the local fish shop seeking the ingredients for a fish pie. With thinning grey hair and a genteel nature, Stein could have passed for one of the retired locals rather than one of the world’s best known TV chefs; except for his accent. “Ever since a memorable weekend eating Pambula Oysters and flathead in Merimbula in the sixties I’ve had the image of the clean blue sea and sweet seafood of the South Coast fixed in my head. When I was introduced to Mollymook about six years ago I knew that one day I would open up a restaurant

celebrating local fish and shellfish but keeping it really simple. I jumped at the opportunity when it came up.” Rick Stein Mollymook Beach on the NSW South Coast is an easy 3 hours drive south of Sydney. The attractions of Mollymook have largely been known only to locals and regular holidaymakers from Sydney and Canberra who return every year. The arrival of Rick Stein has put Mollymook on the global food stage. When he embarked on a similar venture 25 years ago in the Cornish seaside town of Padstow, tourists came in droves. His Padstow empire, now worth an estimated $60 million, encompasses a cafe, hotel, deli, patisserie, gift shop, fish and chip shop and cookery school.

Even the chef himself remains unsure whether his new venture will be as successful as his British enterprise. He says he likes the South Coast just as it is. “I don’t plan on expanding at this stage. I hope Mollymook doesn’t change,” he says. I just fell in love with the South Coast and its seafood.” But it’s not just the locally caught John Dory or Pambula oysters that brought Stein to our shores. Stein had fallen in love with the coastal town’s beauty - and the beauty of an Australian woman. About 10 years ago while on a book tour, he fell in love with Australian Sarah Burns. She now helps manage the Australian operation. Stein has designed the menu, which is predominantly seafood-based and uses South Coast produce. Mains such as ravioli of lobster with spinach and a basil sauce will ensure the local cuisine is competitive on a world stage. The nearby town of Milton already has a reputation as a “foodie” destination. The Rainbow Pie Shop, the

says. “Mollymook, Ulladulla, Milton: they are all similar to Padstow in the UK. They are quite away from the city but they attract the same families who come back year after year for holidays. They are all looking for somewhere nice to eat.” He plans on dividing his time between the UK and Mollymook, and hopes his time the local fishmonger continues to be busy sourcing the very best seafood! Examples of the dishes: Crab with Wakame Salad and Wasabi Mayonnaise. Provencal Fish Soup with Rouille and Parmesan. Hot Lobster with Parsley, Chives and Tarragon. Indonesian Seafood Curry with Blue Eye Trevalla, Calamari and Endeavour Prawns. Fillet of John Dory with Fresh Summer Truffle Slivers of New Potato and Wild Mushrooms.

74 Islands, located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef on the tropical coast of Queensland, Australia.

A

visit to the Whitsundays is a feast of the senses, surrounded by natural beauty, dotted with secluded beaches and friendly towns from which to explore. The 74 islands of the Whitsundays form the largest offshore island chain on Australia’s coastline. The bulk are beautiful, tropical, deserted islands, but eight offer a variety of resort accommodation with fringing coral reefs at their door step. The largest of the Whitsunday Island resorts, Hamilton Island, offers an experience like no other: beaches, coral reefs, fascinating flora and fauna, fine food and wines, and activities too numerous to mention. Hamilton Island has world-class

10

Welcome to the

Whitsundays facilities such as the Hamilton Island Golf Club, the architectural wonder which is the Hamilton Island Yacht Club, Spa Wumurdaylin, and a host of new or refurbished hotels and resorts make it a fresh and lively place for both resort guests and day visitors. 70% of the island is national park, striking a balance between extensive holiday facilities and the island’s striking natural beauty. Consistently rated amongst the top beaches in the world, Whitehaven Beach is the jewel in the crown of the Whitsundays. See Whitehaven from Airlie Beach or any of the resort islands, or stay overnight on a sailing boat and wake up to a sunrise over the magnificent white sands.

The Whitsunday Coast is a cosmopolitan and inviting peninsula that stretches from the central town of Airlie Beach to secluded beaches and coves along the coastline. Airlie Beach provides the ideal mainland base for adventure in the Whitsundays. From Airlie you can venture out to the islands. Not far off the coast is one of the lesser known islands of the group known as Long Island. Named after its key feature, Long Island is 9km long and only 400m at its widest point. The closest island to the mainland, Long Island is a wonder to explore filled with 13km of National Park walking tracks and plentiful flora and fauna. The fringing coral reefs are expansive through-

out the many bays on the island, great for snorkelling and beachcombing. The last island to be developed in the Whitsundays and perhaps the last in Australia, Keswick Island, is truly a place of beauty, with pristine beaches, crystal clear water and untouched bushland. Keswick is a 517 hectare slice of natural parkland at the southern end of the Whitsundays. It has been untouched for centuries and is home to hundreds of bird species, rich ocean surrounds and thousand year-old trees. Birdlife is prolific; curlews, native pea hens, pheasants and many more. The island is also home to a bee population which has remained disease free, due to the island’s complete isolation.

The last island to be developed in the Whitsundays and perhaps the last in Australia, Keswick Island, is truly a place of beauty, with pristine beaches, crystal clear water and untouched bushland. Keswick Island has only a handful of people living there full time. There are also many islands to visit nearby. Whales take the passage between St Bees Island

and Keswick Island as a short cut when they have their calves. The Whitsundays are a popular place for both whales and people alike.

Party on in

Port Douglas

Port Douglas is laid back yet sophisticated. A dream town where winter simply does not happen.

P

ort Douglas celebrates Carnivale each year from May 19-29. There’s music, art, sport, food, culture and all styles of entertainment. It provides every reason you need to hang out in Port Douglas! For 10 balmy days and nights the festival of Carnivale offers a chance to flirt with life and engage in a kaleidoscope of events. Now 18 years old, Carnivale has grown from a street fiesta to a program which involves the entire community.

14

The restaurant scene in Port Douglas is thriving. Some highlights are Nautilus – great by night, Sassi’s now in Grant Street has amazing pasta. Check out Two Fish, Bistro 3, On the Inlet and Salsa Bar. Although Silky Oaks Lodge is best known as a resort it is also a magnificent dining experience. Try Hi Tide on Four Mile beach, Bel Chibo and Bucci for Italian and Mojo’s of Mossman.

After all that food take a hike! The most awe inspiring natural scenery in Australia surrounds Port Douglas. Construction of Mossman Gorge walk has finished and the walk is fantastic. Set within the world heritage-listed Daintree National Park, the sheer size of the ferns, strangler figs, inquisitive Ulysses butterflies, Boyd’s forest dragons and even the secretive platypus are hard to convey. The River Circuit track is less than 1km long. What it lacks in length it makes up for with its towering rainforest and easy access to the fast-flowing Mossman River. It’s a flat, easy stroll across elevated boardwalks, bridges and flat dirt tracks to a lookout positioned below a series of cascades. Just below the lookout is a makeshift beach from which one can brave the waters. It is one of the most popular walks in Australia.

QUEENSLAND | Noosa Gold Coast

Noosa

Playground of the rich and famous

One hour drive north from Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is the perfect weekend destination.

F

rom popular Noosa Heads and trendy Hastings Street to the holiday destinations of Caloundra and Marcoola, the Sunshine Coast has it all. Seductive sunsets, intoxicating views, sparkling waters and warm weather waits for you at Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Coolum and Noosa on the coast. In the hinterland find the enchanting Maleny, Montville, Mapleton and Mary Valley. With some of the world’s best beaches and the picturesque hinterland only minutes away, the Sunshine Coast is a great place to come and explore or simply relax. The Sunshine Coast has long been a popular holiday destination for Australians and is now popular with visitors from all around the world as they discover the beauty of its tropical rain forests and white sandy beaches. The Sunshine Coast stretches some 50 km from end to end with major tourism areas mainly on the narrow coastal strip and the Blackall Ranges. Most people are aware of the Noosa region which has long been regarded as the playground of the rich and famous. Noosa is without doubt one of the most popular and sought after holiday locations on the Sunshine Coast. Separated slightly from the rest of the coast, Noosa Heads and Noosaville have all the ingredients of the perfect holiday. There is a beautiful sandy beach with calm waters for family swimming near the headland and good surfing conditions a little further out. The main action is along Hastings Street, packed full of restaurants, cafes, gift shops and fashion outlets. Surfing the menu here means sharing fresh fish and chips on the beach, sampling cutting edge coastal cuisine in a relaxed beachside cafe or lingering over a long lunch with friends

16

at an award winning restaurant. Many tourists and locals enjoy a drink at the Noosa Surf Club, which is right on the beach and has sensational ocean views. Noosa National Park, the Noosa River and the connected waterways present some of Queensland’s best natural scenery - along with excellent fishing and boating opportunities. From fishing in Caloundra’s Pumicestone Passage and spotting koalas in Noosa’s National Park, to exploring hinterland art galleries and meeting the locals at an organic farmers’ market, it’s all about taking time out to reconnect with your loved one and recharge your body’s batteries.

weekendsfortwo.com.au

Laid-back and leafy, Noosa is ideal for a rejuvenating getaway at any time of year. Beautiful beaches and waterways are bordered by national parks and forests, making it the perfect place for outdoor adventures and a range of touring choices. I have been travelling “up the coast” to Noosa every year for many years and have developed my own personal therapeutic routine: Eat; Sleep, Surf, Sun, Eat, Sleep, Surf, Sun, etc, etc. Works a treat! It’s not all about relaxation in Noosa. From beachfront horse rides and hitting the waves on a board, to boating experiences, cooking schools or a round of golf, there’s something just right for all levels of adventure. Holidays are also about treating yourself to the good things in life and leaving your daily worries behind, and there are plenty of pampering possibilities in Noosa! Noosa has a range of world class health and wellbeing services on offer. Some people visit Noosa so often that they decide to simply move here, including some of the world’s most talented restaurateurs and chefs. People like expatriate New Yorker Jim Berardo, doyen of Noosa restaurateurs whose establishments are a regular part of my Noosa regime. They have given the seaside haven, already known for its cuisine, a delicious new flavour. Dine beachside with ocean views and sea breezes, wind down with a relaxing meal overlooking the Noosa River or get amongst the eclectic choices in Sunshine or Peregian Beach. Indulge in some holiday retail therapy at stylish boutiques and outdoor markets. Noosa’s annual calendar of events means there really is something to celebrate all year around. From sporting and music events to the arts and food and wine, Noosa makes a festival of all the best things in life!

For a full calendar of events, or to start planning your next Noosa getaway, go to visitnoosa.com.au or call 1 3000 NOOSA.

Famous for its sun, surf and sand, the Gold Coast starts south of Brisbane and includes 42 kilometres of golden sandy beaches.

B

eyond the beautiful beaches there is a vast rainforest hinterland with breathtaking scenery The Gold Coast is Australia’s favourite holiday playground; it’s been that way since the 1950s when Surfers Paradise was established as a beachside town with a great hotel. Over the last half century more and more attractions have popped up,

18

making the region one of the most touristoriented in the world. It now seems strange that the worst surfing beach on the Gold Coast is called “Surfers Paradise”. Head north or south and you’ll immediately run into some of the best, most consistent waves in the country, but if you’re just learning, Surfers Paradise is ideal.

If you like sun, surf, sand, unpolluted air and a relaxed lifestyle then you’ll love the Gold Coast. With 245 days of fine weather each year and daytime temperatures above 22 degrees for 279 days a year, it truly is the Sunshine State. The coastal region stretching from South Stradbroke Island to Coolangatta / Tweed Heads is a beach and blue water wonderland with clean, clear waters. There are enough things to do to keep you occupied for months on the Gold Coast. The big four attractions are Dreamworld, Sea World, Movie World and Wet’n’Wild, but there are quite a few more. If you head past the obvious tourist traps, you’ll find some great places to hang out. World-class dance venues with guest DJs, the Gold Coast has more square metres of dance floor per capita than anywhere in the world. The Gold Coast is Australia’s answer to Las Vegas and a great venue for a weekend away.

A uniquely intimate

country experience.

Spicers Hidden Vale, SEQ Country.

Within the Australian context, the words “cattle station” have special meaning. They conjure up romantic images of the open range, life in the saddle, and true country hospitality – Spicers Hidden Vale fits this picture like a glove. Situated on a working 12,000 acre cattle station just 60 minutes from Brisbane and 90 minutes from the Gold Coast, Spicers Hidden Vale is a truly unique Australian experience boasting an elegantly restored homestead, boutique colonial cottages, the award-winning Cotton’s Restaurant and endless outdoor activities. Here you can experience all the romance of life on a cattle station, complemented by the style, service and sheer indulgence you expect from Spicers Retreats, Hotels and Lodges. Built in the 1920s, the original homestead is now the main guest lounge, reception, restaurant and bar. Scattered around the homestead, the cottages and out-buildings that once provided lodgings for station staff have been converted into deluxe accommodation. Each has its own distinct character, from a quaint one-bedroom Chinese cottage built in the late 1800s to a six-bedroom cottage formerly the home of the property’s station manager, the rooms match their unique location. And all 30 guest rooms and suites offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and lakes from large verandahs. During your stay you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience life, work and play on a working cattle station, with a host of traditional activities on offer from horse riding to clay pigeon shooting. If that doesn’t take your fancy you can also enjoy two swimming pools, a tennis court, croquet lawn, mountain bikes, gym room and massage facilities. Eating well is firmly on the agenda at Spicers Hidden Vale. Named after the pioneering Cotton family who once owned the property, Cotton’s Restaurant offers an intimate, relaxing atmosphere and an innovative, award-winning menu specialising in quality, cooked-to-perfection steaks matched with a superior wine list. Savour the Restaurant’s signature Kumamoto Wagyu beef raised right on the property as you plan your next outback adventure, or enjoy a glass of one of Australia’s top wines as you gaze across enchanting views of the surrounding valley and mountain ranges. In the hands of experienced master chefs, the seasonal menu offers something new and extraordinary with each visit. Tariff starts from $349 for a Junior Suite per couple, per night. Weekends in the

Granite Belt The Granite Belt is an area of the Great Dividing Range in south-east Queensland, Australia, centred on the town of Stanthorpe.

T

he cool, high country of the granite belt is found to the south of the Darling Downs and north of the New England Tablelands. The area gains its name from the predominantly granite rocks that distinguish it. The area is a popular weekend destination by way of the boom in wine tourism. The region is also a cool contrast to the coastal heat and humidity. It is Queensland’s premier wine region. Many of the fifty-plus wineries in the region have enjoyed significant success with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay for some years. Recently Verdelho has performed very well and many wineries are experimenting with alternative grape varieties, including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. Part of the Granite Belt is reserved as Girraween National Park. “Girraween” can be translated as “place of flowers” in the local Aboriginal language. Wildflowers

weekendsfortwo.com.au

are particularly evident in spring, when they explode into colour. The area is home to at least 800 species of flowering plants. Some of these plants include ground orchids, rock roses, pea-flowers and native bluebells. Winter in Stanthorpe means beautiful crisp clear mornings, winter trees trimmed with frost and cosy evenings in front of an open fire. Stanthorpe is the coolest (make that coldest) place in Queensland, and it’s the winter chill of the Granite Belt that has earned the season its nickname of “Brass Monkey Season”. June, July and August is the busy season in Stanthorpe as visitors come to enjoy the crisp frosty mornings and a glass of warming red wine in front of a crackling log fire at night. There is always the prospect, or hope, of snow and the first reports bring visitors flocking to the Granite Belt. The Granite Belt offers the perfect winter getaway. Dress for fresh, cool days viewing the dramatic landscape. It is one

of contrasts: from bushland bordered by granite monoliths to lavender farms and vineyards. There’s boutique wineries and cellar doors, plenty of places to dine, events and festivals to attend. Events to check out include Opera & Jazz in the Vineyard and Christmas in July dinners. See www. weekendsfortwo.com.au to make a booking.

My Sexy City of

Sydney Fly into Sydney and book a window seat. By day or night, this town sure is good-lookin’.

E

ven though I have lived here most of my life and travelled widely, I’m still amazed at how pretty it is from the air. Sexy, spirited and unfailingly self-confident, Sydney is a bonfire of vanity just waiting for you to light the match. It must be a great buzz for a newcomer to fly in and see a city built from icons that make your jaw drop – the Harbour, the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Beaches, it’s all there on final approach. Once on the ground everybody seems to be outside no matter what time of year. The beaches are swarming, street cafés buzz and the harbour blooms with sails. Superficial? Sure, but Sydney is also arty, sporty, boozy, funny, fashionable…the perfect partner! Sydney is a world city like New York, London, Paris and Berlin. This is a place that draws in anyone who wants to “make it”. Australia’s best flock to the

22

Harbour City to make their mark. The effect is dazzling: an energetic, ambitious marketplace where anything goes. Sydney’s ocean beaches and lush parks sustain as much life as the city. See Bondi but also throw your towel down at nearby Bronte or Tamarama, or even on some of the less well known harbour beaches like Shelly Beach near Manly and Camp Cove near Watson’s Bay. The city’s Royal Botanic Gardens afford a great view of the Opera House. One of Sydney’s best walks is along the cliff tops from Bondi to Coogee. With sea views all the way and cafes to lounge in, it’s as much loved by locals as it is by tourists. You must “do” Kings Cross, Sydney’s colourful red-light district. It’s not for prudes but plentiful bars full of colourful characters make it interesting. If you’re looking for a drink with a view, head to Opera Bar at the Opera House to watch

Sexy, spirited & unfailingly self-confident, Sydney is a bonfire of vanity just waiting for you to light the match. (Bill Granger). Zip around the corner to Le Monde or Fifi Foveaux for great egg breakfasts. For the essential Sydney dining experience that is a table with a view, head to Hugo’s in the beachside suburb of Manly. All you need to do is hop off the ferry and you’re there – try for a seaside seat. Sophisticated shoppers head for the boutiques, cafes and bookshops of Paddington for original Australian designs like Dinosaur Designs and Collette Dinnigan or Akira Isogawa in nearby Woollahra. The CBD is easily walkable and you can get a ferry anywhere around the harbour. The views are awesome. Jump on any ferry from Circular Quay about 30 mins before sunset and get a world class view of Sydney Harbour for under $10. Don’t bother getting off, just stay on the ferry until it returns to Circular Quay. It ranks up there with the Star Ferry in Hong Kong as value for your sightseeing dollar. Sydney’s my kinda town!

Hawkesbury River

Serenity

The Hawkesbury River is only 45 minutes drive from Sydney.

Y

ou can experience the serenity of bygone days in secluded river settlements set in beautiful waterways. The Hawkesbury stretches from the sea through the heartland of a fertile valley to the highlands at the foot of the Blue Mountains. It offers secluded romance, outdoor adventures, unique accommodation and the ideal getaway in Sydney’s own backyard. The river is well known for its waterfront restaurants, houses on the water’s edge, fishing and holidaying. The Dream Time lives on in the sandstone gorges and waters of “Deerubbun”, the aboriginal name for the Hawkesbury

weekendsfortwo.com.au

River. The Ku Ring Gui and Dharug aboriginal tribes who inhabited the region for thousands of years treasured the local seafood, especially the famous rock oysters.

The rock art, engravings and tribal names preserved in the National Parks surrounding the Hawkesbury link the Dream Time with the present. Dotted with secluded river communities, the Hawkesbury River is navigable for over 100 kilometres. You could cruise and explore these waters for weeks and still not see it all. Spend a peaceful night in a waterfront house and wake up to the call of Kookaburras, Whip Birds and Sea Eagles. Wild flowers bloom in the surrounding National Parks. The Hawkesbury River is known for its tranquillity. Regular events include the Canoe Classic and numerous fairs and festivals held in the townships along the river including Brooklyn, Berowra, Cottage Point, Spencer, Wisemans Ferry, St Albans, Windsor and Richmond. Each place has something special to offer. Treat yourself to lunch at a waterfront restaurant, or simply relax in the comfort of your river cottage. If you haven’t kicked back and watched the tide go up and down, thrown a line in the water and watched the sun go down over sandstone escarpments, then perhaps now is the time.

Lazy Days on

Lord Howe

There’s no place quite like Lord Howe Island.

I

t is widely regarded as the most beautiful island in the Pacific and is one of just four island groups to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. With its emerald-green peaks and forests, this island paradise is surrounded by golden beaches and crystal clear waters. Only 400 visitors are allowed at any one time. The island is laced with delightful walking trails through palm and banyan forests, emerging to spectacular cliff-top views. There are challenging hikes including 875 metre Mt Gower, regarded as one of the world’s best day walks. Lord Howe is a sub-tropical “treasure

island” lost in time. Take rainforest walking tracks bordered by ancient plants and explore remote rocky coves alive with birdlife. A day might include combing white sand beaches for shells or a dip in warm waters. Read a book, enjoy fine wine and cuisine and the company of like-minded travellers. It’s a great place to take time out, explore and rejuvenate. The crystal clear lagoon is bordered by the world’s most southerly coral reef. Wander in off the beach to snorkel among colourful tropical fish, turtles and other marine life. The water is so clean and clear it’s like swimming in an aquarium.

Lovers find romance in the island’s secluded corners and natural beauty. The clear, clean sea surrounding Lord Howe Island lures visitors to swim, surf, snorkel, dive, fish or paddle year-round. Relax on a deserted beach. There are 11 to choose from. You can hand-feed the metrelong kingfish at Ned’s Beach. At day’s end, sip a cold beer or glass of wine and watch the sun sink into the sea. The island is a small, friendly and hospitable place, where the pace of life is relaxed. You’re sure of a warm welcome – your hosts will meet you at the airport – probably in bare feet!

Byron Bay’s picture-perfect Wategos Beach, just below the town’s iconic lighthouse, is one of the few north facing beaches on the east coast. As Australia’s most easterly point, you can spy whales and dolphins passing close off shore while migrating north during winter. The northern coast of New South Wales provides loads of opportunities for any fishermen keen to catch and cook their own supper. Located next to Wategos Beach, Little Wategos Beach is one of the region’s best rock fishing spots. Kangaroo Valley

Looking to break away from the stress of weekday life and relax with friends? The south coast of NSW is as good as it gets.

T

he South Coast of New South Wales covers the areas of Wollongong City, Shellharbour City, Kiama Municipality, Shoalhaven City, Eurobodalla Shire and the Bega Valley Shire. Having a weekend away means relaxing and having fun. The south coast has become a haven with beautiful destinations like Gerringong, Gerroa, Kiama and Jervis Bay to name but a few. All of these destinations promote pampering in some of the best accommodation on the coast. Located just an hour and a half from Sydney and two and a half hours from Canberra, Gerringong boasts some of the best little cafes and restaurants in the Shopping in Berry

36

country. With amazing sunrises and green rolling hills, Kiama is also becoming one of the top getaways for a weekend. Do some quality shopping in the quaint sandstone terraces or at the traditional seaside markets. You can see sights such as the famous Blowhole and the Minnamurra Rainforest. Looking for something even more laid back, Gerroa might be for you. A peaceful holiday town once used by religious orders for retreats, Gerroa will take you far away from the stress of weekday life. The accommodation is as beautiful as the beaches. Make sure you have breakfast, lunch or dinner at the award-winning Seahaven Cafe on Riverleigh Avenue. Rich in aboriginal history, Jervis Bay gives you lots to do on your weekend away. The Bay boasts the fascinating Lady Denman Maritime Museum and Gallery, as well as some more adventurous activities like snorkelling and scuba diving. Spend some time sunbathing on the famously “whitest sands in the world” of Hyams Beach. Whether it’s shopping, relaxing, seeing the sights or taking part in activities – the south coast is a must visit for you and your loved one.

Heritage wilderness. The Huon Trail leads you to ideal places for a relaxing holiday or short break. It offers an inspiring mix of outdoor adventures, accommodation to suit all budgets, delicious food, top class cool climate wines, a rich maritime and rural heritage, plus friendly, creative people.

The area offers unique experiences and attractions ranging from towering sea cliffs, dramatic mountain peaks, ancient forests, wondrous underground caves, pristine waterways, native flora and fauna and truly sensational landscapes. Relax and spend a few days exploring Southern Tasmania’s Huon region. You won’t regret it. The Huon Valley is a valley of sunshine and mists, of fruitful orchards and rich soil, of riverside settlements and towns on the forest fringe. Here, you can savour the fresh produce of the land and sea, sweet summer berries, crisp autumn apples, full-flavoured wines, and the mouth-filling flavours of salmon and shellfish. Tucked away in quiet, creative corners you’ll find the galleries and studios of artists and craftspeople where beautiful things are made from paint, clay, glass and fragrant Huon pine. The hub of the district is Huonville, an apple town on the banks of the river. Across the bridge, you can follow the valley south to Franklin, where timber shavings curl from the boat-builders’ planes, and traditionally built craft tug at their moorings beyond the workshop.

The cruise visits Vineyards such as Panorama and Heriots Point Vineyards. Nestled on the western shores of the Huon River and set against the panoramic backdrop of the Wellington Ranges is the boutique Huon Valley Vineyard, Heriots Point. It is the source of delicious, ruby red, richly flavoured, Tasmanian pinot. he Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park is world-renowned as an example of temperate wilderness and was listed as a World Heritage Area in 1982. The majestic Cradle Mountain, with Dove Lake at its foot, is at the northern end of the World Heritage Area. The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain epitomise the feel of a wild landscape, while ancient rainforest and alpine heathlands, buttongrass and stands of colourful deciduous beech provide a range of environments to explore. Icy streams cascading out of rugged mountains, stands of ancient pines mirrored in the still waters of glacial lakes and a wealth of wildlife ensure there is always something to captivate you. The area is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. A visit will reveal why. For many, a highlight of their trip to the northern end of the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park is the view across Dove Lake to Cradle Mountain,

one of Tasmania’s natural highlights. The mountain itself is a jagged, dolerite peak which dominates the area. Its name, supposedly, is derived from the mountain’s resemblance to a miner’s cradle. This dramatic vista can be seen either on foot as you walk along the shores of the Lake, or from the car park at Dove Lake. There are a number of excellent walks in the area, including the Dove Lake Loop Track which takes you through the stunning Ballroom Forest, an area of cool temperate rainforest nestled against the slopes of the mountain. Other walks include the Weindorfers Forest walk. The area around Weindorfer’s Chalet is well worth a look. Rich in history, the rustic chalet was once home for Gustav Weindorfer, the founding father of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park. The area in which the chalet is set is simply beautiful. You will understand why Gustav dedicated his life to ensuring the preservation of the Cradle Mountain area for all people, for all time

ere you feed your soul and nourish your senses on the banks of a primitive river. It is an unforgettable experience that unlocks the Tarkine rainforest and the Wild West coast. The Tarkine is one of the world’s great wild places. It’s a 447,000 hectare wilderness area in the North West of Tasmania. A range of walks and cruises on the legendary Arcadia II provides responsible access to this globally significant and sensitive environment. Corinna reveals nature in the raw, unchanged for 60 million years. In a short time, Corinna has become a “must do” destination for visitors to Tasmania. It is Australia’s newest eco tourism experience set in her oldest rainforest. Corinna lies north of Strahan and west of Cradle Mountain. At 40 degrees south, the nearest land mass to the west is two thirds of the way around the world in South America. Corinna provides an escape from mass tourism. This ancient

rainforest shows a world beyond human memory and is a living link with the ancient super continent Gondwanaland. Corinna provides a wild experience that is difficult to find in Tasmania and elsewhere in the world. Opportunities abound to explore the story of the Tarkiner aboriginal people who made the west coast their home as many as 30,000 years ago. Today, Corinna is an oasis in the wild where a small settlement lives on the banks of a beautiful river. Whichever way you come to Corinna you will take a section of the famous “silica road”. It is an all weather surface using the tailings from the nearby silica mine. The beautiful white silica road is the sign that this amazing wilderness experience is within reach. You won’t forget it!

They are the largest inland water system in the Southern Hemisphere. Edged by the famous Ninety Mile Beach, it is also one of the longest and most beautiful stretches of sand in the world. Lakes Entrance is approximately 4 hours from Melbourne along the Princes Highway, 5 hours from Canberra and 8 hours from Sydney.

Here you are in the fishing capital of Australia. Lakes Entrance is home to one of the biggest fishing fleets in Australia which is moored right on the doorstep of the town. The large trawlers supply Melbourne and local markets with daily catches of fresh fish. Lakes Entrance is a “foodies delight with cosmopolitan dining and innovative menus. Driving down a Silver Moon on the

Great Ocean Road

Romantic evenings accompanied by a full moon rise are quite a special time in the Otways.

T

he full moon rises from the ocean after dark on a few occasions each year. It is quite a spectacular sight. Imagine watching such a spectacular event from the comfort of your own balcony located steps from the ocean with sweeping and unobstructed views out across Bass Straight. The only sound you will hear is the crashing of the waves as they break

onto the shore, with the surrounding views softly highlighted by the silvery moonlight! Stroll across the beach and you can watch the sun set behind the magnificent Otway Ranges while the moon rises over the ocean. Listen to the lulling sound of the waves. Plan now and then check for clear weather as the days get closer. Set yourselves up with a romantic dinner,

maybe a glass of wine and get ready for a few days of what can be one of nature’s most spectacular shows. Maybe you could make your way back up the Great Ocean Road to Apollo Bay. Enjoy a light dinner and drive slowly back as the sun starts to fade behind the Otway ranges and the changing light creates a mystical pattern on the ocean by your side. It would be a fitting end to another fantastic day. The scenery along the Great Ocean Road is justifiably famous. Come and experience the views. Visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse or have lunch in one of the cafes at Lavers Hill which overlooks the Southern Ocean. You can see forever on a clear day. Travel to Crows Nest Lookout or Mariners Lookout while at Apollo Bay. For the special moon occasions, check for all possibilities at: http:// museumvictoria.com.au/planetarium/ discoverycentre/rise-and-settimes/?epslanguage=en&StartDate=26Sep-2010 The moon rising just prior to sunset is also spectacular. There are a couple of special moon events each year so use the link above to find your next spectacular ‘after dark’ full moon rise and make the most of it.

Ubud is the heart and soul of Bali and the perfect spot for a couples retreat.

T

he deep greens of the tropical forest, the rice paddies, the stunning views of the river gorge along the “Valley of the Kings” and the artistic village of Ubud. Asia is blessed with many beautiful places but Ubud is truly unique. Ubud is located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the island. It is one of Bali’s major arts and culture centres. The eighth century legend tells of a Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers (an auspicious site for Hindus) in Ubud. Here he founded the Gunung Lebah Temple on the valley floor. The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants; Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ubad (medicine). In the late nineteenth century, Ubud became the seat of feudal lords who owed their allegiance to the king of Gianyar, at one time the most powerful of Bali’s southern states. The lords were significant supporters of the village’s increasingly renowned arts scene. They built along the

60

Petanu River gorge, hence the name “The Valley of the Kings”. The lords brought in the greatest artists from all over Bali to teach and train in the arts, helping Ubud become the cultural centre of Bali. There are many museums in Ubud. The home of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978), the last “king” of

Ubud, is now occupied by his descendants and dance performances are held in its courtyard. Ubud focuses on culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area has forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and is less congestion. Give it a go!

Heart of the North Island

Lake Taupo

Cruising on Lake Taupo will allow you to appreciate the awesome grandeur of the North Island’s volcanic region.

Situated in the volcanic heart of the North Island, the Lake Taupo region is home to New Zealand’s largest fresh water lake, fascinating geothermal areas and the famous Huka Falls.

T

he township of Lake Taupo is on Highway 1, midway between Auckland and Wellington. Lake Taupo’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the attractions of the Central North Island. The bustling resort town of Taupo is an ideal base: restaurants and accommodation options abound; there are numerous art and craft galleries and hot thermal pools for relaxing. Visitors come for the scenery and action-packed adventure. The lakeside community is alive with great places to eat, drink and party. Trout fishing should be on your menu of things to do because this region is one of the last truly wild trout fisheries in the world. Local guides will soon get you hooked, and there are plenty of restaurants happy to cook your catch. Other special experiences include the walk to Huka Falls, a game of golf at Wairakei and kayaking to the Maori carvings at Mine Bay. Lake Taupo was created by a gigantic volcanic eruption in 181AD. At 616 square kilometres, it is Australasia’s largest lake and as big as Singapore Island. The lake’s

62

attractive pumice sand beaches give it the appearance of an inland ocean. Over thousands of years, volcanic action has created a landscape of simmering craters, boiling mud pools, fumaroles and steam vents. For hundreds of years, Maori have used the geothermal resources of this area for cooking, bathing, and leisure. Maori mythology is richly interwoven with

the geothermal features of the region. The lake is the centre of a landscape offering all manner of activities and sights that will be burned into your memory. Think 220,000 litres of water per second pouring over the Huka Falls or early morning sunshine sparkling on Lake Taupo against a backdrop of volcanic mountains. Rainbow and brown trout were liberat-

Open for fishing 12 months a year, the lake and its adjoining rivers represent one of the last true wild trout fisheries in the world. The small town of Turangi, on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, is the hub of trout fishing in the region. Fishing lodges are plentiful and the local streams are usually dotted with anglers standing thigh-deep in water! The drive around the eastern shore of the lake, from Taupo to Turangi, is a scenic drive with stunning views. Tokaanu is one of a number of small lakeside settlements around Lake Taupo, catering for both permanent residents and those with holiday accommodation. It is a five minute drive from Turangi, the largest town at the southern end of the lake. Tokaanu is the southernmost entry to Lake Taupo. It is a favourite launching spot to access the Tongariro Delta with its exceptional fishing for brown and rainbow trout. Spin fishing is popular at the mouth of the tailrace or from the Tokaanu wharf.

ere you won’t come across smog, petrol or diesel fumes, just the aroma of sweet earth and native plant life. You won’t hear telephones, motor vehicles, horns and humans, just native birds or the running water of a stream. Surrounded by majestic mountains and nestled on the shores of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is New Zealand’s premier lake and alpine resort. Take the Dart River road upstream to Glenorchy and you’ll find a magical valley made famous by the movie Lord of the Rings. The area has captured hearts and imaginations since the first Maori came in search of pounamu (greenstone) and the giant Moa bird. More recently, gold miners, adventurers, filmmakers, wine enthusi-

Born as an 1860’s goldmining camp, 140 years later Queenstown has a compact and sophisticated downtown area. Dwarfed by the surrounding mountains, there are amazing views from everywhere. There’s also a permanent buzz downtown where you’ll find a lively café/bar scene and excellent shopping. Queenstown has four exceptionally

distinct seasons. The visual delights of the Queenstown Lakes District are stunning. Autumn ...ablaze with gold’s, yellows and vivid reds, the Winter, a wonderland of snow capped mountains against calm blue lakes, the greens and vibrant burst of colour in Spring and the bright blue skies and golden tussocks on the mountain sides during the long hot days of Summer. Blue skies, white slopes and spectacular views are hallmarks of the Queenstown winter. The ski season often lasts until

Skiers, snowboarders and alpine lovers are drawn to the region’s six international standard ski areas. Open from June, a spirited après ski culture and plenty of off-slope action abounds. The breathtakingly beautiful snow areas cater to every level of skier or snowboarder. Queenstown is within easy reach of Coronet Peak ski resort (about 20 mins away) and The Remarkables ski resort (about 40 mins away). You can also easily access Treble Cone (about 90 mins), Cardrona ski field (about 60 mins) and Snowpark. Queenstown is great for fair weather skiers, and because the weather is much more stable, the ski resorts rarely close. Thrill seekers can take their pick of adventure activities, most still in full swing during winter, while those seeking relaxation can chill out on the golf course, in a vineyard, at a luxury spa or in the many shops, galleries, bars and restaurants. Non skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tubing, or ice-climbing to name just some of the winter options. Arrowtown is a delightful day trip, and from Glenorchy experience the tranquillity of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks. Queenstown is certainly located within a spectacular lakeside and alpine setting. No denying that. The views are second to none and I never tire of looking out at The Remarkables soaring above Lake Wakatipu. It is less than four hours by direct flight from Sydney.
