Dear Passenger At North Flying we focus on confidence, safety, efficiency, precision, and also the pleasant sides of life. This is why we have chosen articles about some of the things which sweeten life: special wines, excellent whisky, stories about exciting people, interesting food, and new angles on wellknown destinations.

Also read the History of North Flying. The company to which we are all dedicated, about our planes, our special inflight service and about all the things our whole organization does to make your trip perfect. Should you have any questions or comments concerning our magazine, please talk to our

crew – and please feel free to take the magazine with you. Enjoy the reading – and have a pleasant journey.

The History of North Flying Everything great starts out small

One small plane on a grass runway in Western Jutland was the start of Nordfly in 1963. 7 years later the company took over Aalborg Flying Center, moved to Aalborg and changed its name to North Flying.

The backbone of North Flying A/S today is a modern fleet, numbering 7 Jets and 3 Metroliners. Each member of the fleet is a specialized machine, designated for its individual tasks.

In 1994 North Flying merged with Nordic Air and became the largest General Aviation company in Denmark. By taking over Aalborg Airtaxi in 1996 and Falck Air in 1998, Scandinavia’s largest airtaxi company was formed.

North Flying is managed, run by and cared by its dedicated, highly motivated staff at Aalborg and Kastrup Airports. From the pilots to service specialists and administration, each person is part of the common mission:

North Flying base at Aalborg Airport.

to offer precise, comfortable, safe and indivi dually tailored travel solutions of the highest class. This is the foundation on which North F lying A/S is building its continued expansion. The most reliable planes, best trained pilots, extensive service facilities for the planes, and the most modern general facilities are all very strong tools, with which we are ready to meet the challenges of the future.

North Flying master all areas Anywhere. Anytime. Service 24-7

An example of catering from one of our suppliers De Luxe catering, London.

VIP Flights Our VIP flights are of true first-class standard. On board North Flying’s exclusive business jets our VIP passengers experience the highest level of comfort, efficiency and service. Everything is planned and executed with a professional eye for every little detail before, during and after the journey. Charter North Flying’s charter flights offer the perfect solution for groups travelling to conferences, trade fairs, visiting customers or suppliers abroad. Chartering a plane is almost always a time-saving, economical and suitable choice for groups of up to 19 persons. With a charter plane you can fly directly to your destination and back at times that suit you. Cargo With a fleet of 3 large Metroliners we are also well equipped for cargo flight. Our Metros can accommodate almost any type of cargo, which can be delivered quickly and safely to almost any destination. No matter what you need to move at speed, North Flying Cargo is the right partner. Ambulance flight Specially equipped and certified for ambulance flying, North Flying’s modern jets offer a fast and efficient solution when acute ambu lance flights are needed. With their long range and speed, our jets operate everywhere, trans porting patients and doctors safely and in comfort even from one continent to the next. Aircraft Management A partnership between you as a private aircraft owner and North Flying’s professional expertise, giving you the very best of two worlds: an aircraft available when required and the cost offset earned by adding your aircraft to our fleet, when otherwise idle.

North Flying travel all over the world – and there is hardly any airport where we cannot land safely, comfortably and precisely. This is the whole secret behind our success. We are totally independent and mobile, and we have only one goal in mind, to make the right decisions for our customers. You tell us where you want to travel to and when, and we take care of all the rest. This is a precise and geographical reality. From Denmark our operations have spread all over the world. Today we land regularly in practically all European airports, and very often we fly to even the farthest continents. Our pilots are at home everywhere. The world is becoming smaller.

As the internet and other modern means of communication break the global borders, so does North Flying. At the end it is just another side of the same coin, to ease the communication between people across any border or culture, and to forge valuable links around the globe. We hope that you will experience this feeling when you take a seat in one of our aircrafts to conquer the world – and this feeling of freedom of travel is the single most important factor behind our company.

The perfect mix Text: Lisbeth Brahe A sketch pad is jewellery designer Kristina Rosing’s standing accessory when she is on the move. Ideas for new pieces of jewellery may suddenly turn up, and must then immediately be sketched on the pad. Meet the creative and innovative jewellery designer, who has great success with unique pieces of jewellery that must suit any occasion and stand a busy everyday life. Actually, the way had already been cleared for Kristina Rosing’s career. She was ready to act out her big dream of a life as a designer of clothes. She was trained from BEC Design and the Margrethe School in Copenhagen, where she learned to design, to produce and to follow trends in the clothing business. It was a life that made her happy and gave her lots of inspiration. But fate meant otherwise, and today it says jewellery designer and partner on 33 yearold Kristina Rosing’s CV. The title as a jewellery designer came to Kristina Rosing as a natural consequence of her growing participation in the family’s watch and jewellery company, Ragnar Ure & Juveler. Today Kristina Rosing is

18 | Inflight Magazine no. 31

third generation of the family business in Odense that she runs together with her parents, Alice and Steen Ragnar. Kristina Rosing’s childhood was - as a result of the family business - marked by a close contact to jewellery and watches. As time went by she became more interested in replacing the clothing design, and instead to use her creative talent to design and produce jewellery for the family business. Today she is responsible for the design and the development of the jewellery, including Kristina Rosing’s own jewellery brand, io Jewels. Admires Rolex Kristina Rosing’s jewellery design is characterised by the constant use of high-quality materials, and this means for instance gold, diamonds and pearls, and the assortment already covers a wide field with different rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Hereto comes the popularity of Kristina Rosing’s quite unique bracelets from io Jewels, based on an elegant rubber strap. If you are the owner of a piece of jewellery from Kristina Rosing you can tell that the code word is first quality. “I am deeply fascinated by Rolex and their elegant and classic style, the high qual-

ity and their way to keep demand for the watches. Just like Rolex I have from the very start focused on my jewellery to be able to stand a busy everyday life, where it is used actively. And it is fantastic to see how the customers appreciate and know the value of the top quality”. An example of the high quality are the carefully selected stones that some of the rings from io Jewels are ornamented with. Some rings include a brilliant with the special diamond cutting of “Hearts & Arrows”, and if you have a closer look you can spot eight fine hearts and eight arrows in the brilliant. Such a cutting requires a stone of the highest quality. Has the guts and the courage Kristina Rosing takes inspiration for the jewellery design everywhere – on journeys, in nature and at art and jewellery fairs, and she will not hesitate to combine materials. “My time in the clothing business is a clear advantage to me. I got a wide knowledge of development of trends, and I am aware how jewellery should complete the clothes. Right now I am particularly busy producing

jewellery for men. I am sure Danish men will increasingly wear jewellery, if the right piece is created for them. So far we have for example had great success with our elegant rubber bracelets with different links of gold, white gold or rose gold and perhaps engraved or fitted with diamonds”. Part of it all The production of the jewellery takes place in Denmark. This means that Kristina Rosing can be a part of all working processes from the sketch on her pad and till the final product ends up at the customer on in the display window of the shop. “It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to work closely together with among others our goldsmith. We get competent feedback from one another, and that means

quick progress in production. However, not all ideas are realised, and some can easily be sketched for up to one year, before production starts”. To make sure that the jewellery lives up to the high demands for design, quality and finish she always tests the new designs herself, before they are put into production. “To be sure that a new design is precisely as I want it to be I wear the jewellery myself, before it is put into production. In this way I can correct the small things that might be necessary to correct, and I can experience how the design works in everyday life and at parties.

media. By means of her instagram profile io_jewels she tries to present her jewellery here in various surroundings. Which piece of jewellery would Kristina dream of wearing? “I always dream of possessing a new piece of jewellery – something that I can be proud to present. Right now I am designing some beautiful cocktail earrings – and I very much look forward to wearing them”. For further information: www.iojewels.dk

The Art Museums of Skagen The Art Museums of Skagen are three museums in Denmark’s northernmost town, dedicated to the works by the Skagen painters - an art colony which thrived in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The artists included Danish painters like Michael Ancher, P. S. Krøyer, Anna Ancher, Laurits Tuxen, Holger Drachmann - as well as artists from the rest

of Scandinavia like Christian Krohg, Oscar Björck and Fritz Thaulow. The biggest of the three is Skagens Museum, a regular museum with a considerable collection of the very best works from the era. The other are the former homes of the couple Michael and Anna Ancher, Anchers Hus and Drachmanns Hus belonging to

famous poet, author and painter Holger Drachmann. Both artist homes still contain all furniture belongings and art collections belonging to their former occupants. Please purchase a combined ticket to save money on your visit to all three locations. For further information: www.artskagen.dk

Supell – superior garden and patio furniture – a part of Swedish Legacy now in Denmark Elegant, unique and timeless design combined with craftmanship, know-how and pride for every single product is what sets Grythyttan Stålmöbler apart from its competitors. That is no secret in Sweden – and hasn’t been for more than 80 years. Now Supell is introducing a piece of Swedish history in Denmark.

32 | Inflight Magazine no. 31

In 1930 Artur Lindqvist, a swedish blacksmith, designed his first chair and introduced it at The Stockholm Exhibition. The chair was later to be known as the A2. Success was immediate; the gentle rocking sensation of the spring steel gave a unique sense of relaxation and the functional design was timeless. Soon a complete range of garden furniture followed.

These elements have resulted in many busy and exciting years of product development, keeping up with the times and a number of innovations. Many hours at the drawing table, long nights in the workshops and lengthy discussions with top architects and designers have resulted in a wide range of products over the years. Some of Sweden’s most

prominent designers, including Carl Hörvik, Rune Monö and Nisse Strinning have put their stamps on Grythyttan Stålmöbler. For more than 80 years the A2 has been a part of Grythyttan Stålmöbler’s product range with only minor changes to keep up with changing trends. But Grythyttan Stålmöbler is a lot more than just the one chair: Sofas, tables, steel chairs just to name a few. Claus Aaboe, CEO of Supell, met with Karl Lindqvist of Grythyttan Stålmöbler and soon the one-of-a-kind furniture was on its way to Denmark. ”One quick glance and I knew instantly that this was a once in a lifetime chance to provide Denmark and the Danes with a line of garden and patio furniture unlike anything that has been seen in this country before,” Claus Aaboe says.

He started Supell with his daughter, Katrine, with the outstanding wood and steel furniture from Sweden as the only products the company sells. ”We really need this kind of outstanding furniture in Denmark. There is no doubt in my mind that the Danes will welcome it and come to love it as much as I and the Swedes do,” Claus Aaboe says. From horseshoes to furniture In 1895 the Lindqvist family manufactured horseshoes. The patriarch Karl Lindqvist eventually passed on the family firm to his son Artur. Artur was a man with visions beyond the horseshoe making and began searching for other opportunities that could combine his ’out of the box-thoughts’ and know-how from the blacksmith industry.

Inspired by the thoughts of Functionalism and a love for creating beautiful things for daily living, Artur Lindqvist started the production of the now well-known garden furniture – manufactured in spring steel, oak and teak – and since the 1930ies a proud part of swedish heritage. Soul in every little piece The small factory only counts 13 employees. Everything is made by hand – there are no robots in the Swedish wilderness. For instance is the frame of the A2 Chair made of one piece of massive spring steel bent and shaped to the trademark of the A2. Also, that means that every piece of furniture is completely unique and one of a kind. You will never find a complete exact match although they do look almost exactly alike and the difference is hard to tell.

Inflight Magazine no. 31 | 33

Design and comfort go hand in hand with garden and patio furniture from Grythyttan Stålmöbler. It takes a minimum of effort to maintain the wood and steel but yet again, if you want to store it for the winter – no problem. With a click the steel frame comes of the table, folds easily and is ready for the shed. The chairs are stackable and take up the place of only one chair. Another apart-setting feature is the policy of spare parts: On every product purchased from 1954 and forward it is possible to replace any part necessary. This is a service never seen before in this line of industry. The champagne is on us Supell is a company that takes all of their products very seriously: That is why every set of furniture is delivered personally by Claus Aaboe or another Supell employee.

34 | Inflight Magazine no. 31

”That is our way to ensure that you as a customer is fully satisfied. And to compliment we also give away a bottle of champagne for you to enjoy in your garden or on your patio – sitting comfortably in your new chair or sofa from Supell and Grythyttan Stålmöbler,” Claus Aaboe explains.

Throughout this summer Supell will display their garden and patio furniture at different fairs in Denmark. It is also possible to try it out in the Supell Showroom, Park 13 – Den Japanske Have, Trige, Aarhus or Karens Køkken located by Fregatten Jylland in Ebeltoft.

The A2 Chair is still, and by far, the most popular product from Grythyttan Stålmöbler: The small company sells 16.000 pieces in Sweden every year but still the 13 employees at the factory set pride in the craftmanship before the selling rate.

For further information: www.supell.dk

Today Grythyttan Stålmöbler is run by yet another Karl Lindqvist – fourth generation of Linqvists to manufacture the A2 and all of the other products. Even though Karl Lindqvist is the CEO he still takes part in the making of the furniture.

HANS WILSDORF

VISIONARY PAR EXCELLENCE Few individuals can be said to have been both of their time and ahead of their time. And yet, Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex and visionary par excellence, was precisely that. This rare and timeless mix epitomizes both the man and the brand he created.

The prodigious and prolific innovator, who died in 1960, left an invaluable legacy to watchmaking in general and to Rolex in particular. Today, it is impossible to imagine a world where the wristwatch is not common cur-

rency. Yet, that was the case in 1905. Times were however changing. Lifestyles and dress codes as well. Hans Wilsdorf, only 24, “convinced of its enormous potential in a sports-minded country… like Great Britain”, was determined to create a wristwatch as robust and reliable as the pervasive pocket watch, then the order of the day. No easy task. Precision had yet to be perfected in a case of such minuscule proportions, as he distinctly reminds us: “At that period, the wristlet watch was… an object of derision. Watchmakers all over the world remained sceptical as to its possibilities and believed this new-fangled object was bound [for] failure.” The one and only It was especially Hans Wilsdorf’s unbridled daring and determination that led to the development of the ubiquitous wristwatch and catapulted the Rolex brand to the distinguished position it has occupied for over a century. As early as 1914, in a letter from a body of lifelong and lively correspondence, the resolute Hans Wilsdorf proclaimed: “We want to be the first… and the Rolex watch should be regarded as the one and only, the best!” A crystal ball could not have been any clearer. Indeed, not only did Hans Wilsdorf shape our perception of the wristwatch per se, its place, its purpose and its potential. He also made Rolex the ultimate reference in fine watchmaking, by consistently upholding the immutable values that defy time. Quality, passion and excellence. To this day, that very spirit, fired as much by dedica-

tion and perseverance as by foresight and imagination, permeates every Rolex workshop, every research laboratory, every department, confirming what Wilsdorf knew, in his heart of hearts, to be true from the very start: “Originality and quality

[must be] our slogan for the future in every country. Every [Rolex] watch must be an ambassador of quality.” Zest and zeitgeist Hans Wilsdorf’s uncanny ability to take the pulse and set the pace of his times, respond with incomparable deftness and reactivity, and anticipate customers’ evolving needs translated into an unprecedented number of firsts for the brand and for the industry. From chronometer certification to the Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, from the Perpetual rotor to the Professional watch models. “Rolex must continuously strive to think and act differently from the rest. Therein lies my greatest strength,” wrote Hans Wilsdorf. That non-stop spirit of enterprise and innovation extended to every conceivable domain, from intellectual property – and the wisdom of coining, registering and protecting, as early as 1908, a resonant brand name such as Rolex – to avant-garde marketing, communication and testimonial advertising strategies, light years ahead of their time.

38 | Inflight Magazine no. 31

Vision and values By adhering tenaciously to the traditional values he held dear, ever vigilant in the present and continuously imagining the future, Hans Wilsdorf created a truly timeless brand, at once classic and contemporary, and found a virtually magical formula for perpetuity, the very alchemy of the Rolex brand. At 70 plus, Hans Wilsdorf displayed the same unflagging spirit of his early years: “I am over 75 years old. However, I am still full of enthusiasm for the watchmaking cause, to which I regularly contribute fresh ideas.” Boldness and beauty No doubt, Hans Wilsdorf’s resounding message to us today would be the selfsame message of yesteryear: “Step boldly. Success demands courage and iron will.” But, above all, “produce nothing but beautiful work.” For further information: www.ragnar.dk www.klitgaardure.dk

By Gitte Holm A World of Exclusive Difference – that is a fact when travelling with Discovery Travel. Here you go on a trip that nobody ever tried before. No two travels are alike. It has been that way for 20 years – and it will continue so. 20 years ago in November discerning Danish hedonists got something extra to celebrate. Estelle Torp started Discovery

“I wanted to create an altogether special, exclusive travel agency, where we spend time understanding our customers’ wishes and make sure we accommodate them, too. We held on to that ever since, and today we have a team of employees with 15-20 years’ experience, who all keep up the spirit to be one step ahead to explore new destinations and related

The Finger on the Pulse No two travels are alike, and you can have the very travel you always dreamed of. At Discovery Travel you will not find your travel in a catalogue, and the journey will never be a copy of the one your neighbour made either. On the contrary, your travel will be customised down to the last detail to match you and your travel dreams.

“We are driven by a passion to create unique travels, we know our customers and understand what they want, and that gives us the opportunity to be innovative. In order to be able to give our customers the ultimate experience, we spend a lot of time checking all destinations and hotels very thoroughly – and thus we make sure that the travels will always live up to the customers’ expectations. We spend much time “out in the field”; we have a 24-hour hotline that makes us available to our customers around the clock. That’s exactly what makes Discovery Travel a very unique travelling agency,” explains Estelle Torp. Light Adventure and Exclusive Theme Travels Discovery Travel has been well-known to arrange unique dream travels, and at

the moment especially French Polynesia is a hit. While many people seek the relaxing luxury life, others are dedicated to sport and adventure. For a number of years Discovery Travel arranged light adventure travels such as a five days’ trip to Kilimanjaro, helicopter flights down The Strip in Las Vegas or over New York, Formula 1 in Singapore and 15 rounds on the Abu Dhabi F1-lane in an Aston Martin. Most recently a quite special and exclusive action theme travel was introduced, namely the Super Bowl. “With a Super Bowl tour to San Francisco you will not only get a ticket for the games, but the whole show with pre party and everything belonging hereto. And as a matter of fact that’s our general characteristic – you get the whole package, no matter where you go,” explains

Michael Juhl, Executive Market Director of Discovery Travel. For those not interested in adventure there are other popular travels such as for instance a gourmet and wine trip to Ribera Del Duero, where you can try mixing the wines yourself. “We do a lot as to private design of the tours with VIP service and “extra value”. That’s what makes the difference, and therefore we are today one of Denmark’s most favoured tour operators within the luxury segment – and we live by the concept of A World of Exclusive Difference,” Michael Juhl concludes. Scansonic MB-1

IT CAN’T BE!

How can you make such great speakers for that price? Scansonic MB-1 is proof that it is possible to achieve better sound for a cheaper price, if you do it correctly. LYD & BILLEDE THINKS Simply great sound for the money. The build quality is excellent, and moreover, it is really easy to set up. But they come with requirements to your amplifier, they want to have quality!

O

nly a short time ago, we cheered for Raidho X-1, which are fantastic speakers in a small format. But you can't call them cheap. How good can it be for onethird of the price? Well, you take the same designer and give him the task, so you can hope for something really good. Michael Børresen is his name, and the speakers have his initials as the model designation. We already wrote about Børresen

during the test of the Radio speakers, and he has been involved in several projects for other producers. This is because he knows his field, and he has a refreshing way of thinking outside the box. Danish Dantax are owners of Raidho and also has the Scansonic brand. First and foremost, this brand deals with imports of electronics of the cheaper kind, which anyway often has a surprisingly high quality. When they were looking for a speaker series, it was an obvious choice to inquire with an internal specialist – Michael Børresen. COAL FIBRE HERE AND THERE We will have a closer look at the smallest model in Scansonic's top series, which is the two-way mini monitor stand speakers with the name MB-1. The goal was to build small but high-performance stand speakers, which were both elegant and easy to place. That's why the bass port is directed forward, since

it means that the speakers can be set closer to the rear wall. As usual, when Michael Børresen is involved, a band treble is used. It is not Børresen's own treble, but he has a great sense of what a good band treble speaker should sound like, and has found an element which is according to his own ideal sound. The bass/midway element of 4.5 inches has a rigid diaphragm in coal fibre, in line with the diaphragms found in Raidho's speakers. MB-1 has a great rounded enclosure with a coal fibre plate on top, with a look that is both bold and exclusive. Together with the solid inner reinforcements, it also contributes to making the cabinet dead. On the back, two excellent terminals are located, and just like on Raidho C and D, they are placed vertically instead of horizontally. Furthermore, a unique stand with adjustable aluminium feet has been developed, but the speakers also fit with the stands for Raidho X-1. We

have used the latter in this test. On its own stands and also on X-1’s stands, the speakers are slightly tilted backwards, and the stands are quite difficult to mount. It is not simply plug and play... RAIDHO-DNA The first time I heard Scansonic MB-1, my jaw dropped – literally. This was at the fair in Munich, and I am sure that many producers of considerably more expensive speakers, who heard the small wonders, left the Raidho room – because it was there that the speakers were on display – with worried minds. It was a big room, but the small speakers per-

formed at a level that speakers at 13002000 are not supposed to be capable of. They were simply one of the biggest surprises of the fair. That is why I have been looking forward to receiving them for a test. And I might as well say it right away: The result is more than exciting. It is not difficult to set up MB-1 and get a good result, but with a bit of tuning, you can get a whole lot further. They sound a lot like Raidho. That's not so strange, as they have succeeded in squeezing a lot of Raidho's DNA into MB-1. A lot! There is definitely (even) better resolution, musicality and refinement in the small Raidho X-1, no doubt about it, but for one-third of the price, the MB-1 has come a long way. And X-1 are fantastic speakers; the more you listen to them, you appreciate them more and more. The same goes for MB-1; they are winners from the start, but they win even more in the long run. The sound is organic in the most musical of ways, the sound picture is of Raidho format (in other words, big!), and there are plenty of details and resolution. Let's talk about the bass. It is both firm and potent, almost in a nature-defying way – the bass element is only 4.5" after all. This is really a bargain for this price! BETTER WITH A BETTER AMPLIFIER MB-1 was allowed to play both with a hybrid amplifier from Vincent in the same price range as the speakers themselves and with my standard test amplifier, Devialet 200. And it was clearly shown that there is a difference between the amplifiers. Both of them worked well, but MB-1 was not quite able to take advantage of the much higher potiental of the Devialet.

I say not quite, but they came surprisingly close while trying. E.g. the "half-brothers" Raidho X-1 show that it is possible to come (even) closer. With Vincent, the sound became a bit warm without it being too much. MB-1 gave a slightly higher detail level than other speakers in this price range, which I also tried with the amplifier. In addition, I tried with a PowerDAC for around 5,000 kroner and a streamer as the source. Here, you could clearly hear that the amplifier sets limits for the sound quality you get. Not a bad result in itself, but here we have obviously gotten less than what the speakers need. With an amplifier of higher quality, MB-1 flourishes and provides an even better musical result. CONCLUSION Have I heard better speakers than Scansonic MB-1 for this price? No. Do I want a pair of MB-1? Yes. This is really something you need to consider if you are looking for some really good stand speakers where the price is not skyhigh. Here, you get a sound picture you will immediately like, and it all just feels sooo right. A big applause for MB-1!
