“I made digital comic strips to strip away the mundanes of Mondays.”
Hi there, I am Dodi Pratama. I made digital comic strips to strip away the mundanes of Mondays. To me, art is a medium where all of our expressions and emotions can be contained and transformed into a masterpiece that people can enjoy. I do what I do because isn’t it our entire dream to earn through our passions? If you are curious, you can check out @digidoy , there’s a lot of stories that I captured through the characters of the comics. The thing with social media though, people judge, people criticize, yet they have no clue what kind of process we need to go through and every little progress we have made. FYI, I am the first born of a four musketeers. I was born in Medan and ever since I was a little kid, I’ve had my heart set on the world of comic books, to become a comic artist, bringing joy and laughter to the world. Like other great things in life, you can’t do it alone. I am lucky to have a strong team that compliments each other making @digidoy a splendid creative process. With lots of heads united, there will be a lot of stories that can be told.
Jandwee Journal // 13
I feel so lucky that I have a choice to have this as my career. I hope that everyone in Medan will have the options to showcase their talents and artwork. I hope that we can see the great value in art, so we can guarantee bigger job potentials for us all in the future. This city of ours is tough. Medan can be harsh especially toward artist who doesn’t want to be stuck in an artificial world. But sometimes, you can only take so many critiques, in the end of the day; we just want to be appreciated.

In our community ‘studio serum’, we self-funded a creative campaign to showcase a lot of the art, bringing it to the people to accentuate the potential commerciality of the pieces, that’s how social media is integral for every creative campaign. People tend to sensationalize their life through social media, as it has become a lifestyle for most of us to share the daily details of our life, in trying to fit into an image or portraying what the audience seeks. It is a part of the current lifestyle where sharing the daily details of our life becomes second nature, as brand owners quickly figured out that people are a lot more aware and savvy, and community engagement is key to a successful campaign. ‘I am not so big on social media but it was exciting when people know your art and asked to take picture with you, and that was an added sentiment. “I simply want my art to tell stories that people want to share, and with that I will get to know

Q : Do you have to divide your personality when you perform? A : Not really, but ofcourse there is always showmanship. And when I have to sing as a duet or group, I have to have chemistry with them. In order to have that chemistry on stage, I have to be able to analize situations, detect other peoples emotions, so the whole performance would be great. But personality wise, i dont have the need to split them.
Q : What is the greatest dilemma you have in your life? A : Career and education. I get offers from TV and producers wanting to sign a contract but I also love love love medical school. And so if i choose my career, i cant be a doctor. But if i choose to be a doctor, my career would not advance. So the best thing i can do right now, is to have them both at my maximum potential. That is enough for now.
Q : If you can have any other life, what kind would you pick? A : The kind where i can have the best of both worlds. I can be a successful pedeatrician and a singer both at the same time.
Q : Batman and Superman are both an alter ego. If you can create a super alter ego, what would you be, what would be your specialty? A : I would probably name my alter ego SonicBoom and my super power is to be able to control people’s minds by singing to them. And i would probably use my power to help addicts and criminals get back on their feet. ( lol i am not that noble :p ) hahahahahah

Mad Wrap It’s a Mad Mad World @madwrapmedan | Photographed by : @ricardoprb There are things in life that is so mad we just can’t wrap our head around it. Mad Wrap Medan is one of the ultimate examples that it sure is better to be crazy than boring. Mad Wrap is a place where goodies are wrapped into a warm delicious combo, making our tongue swirl in rebellion, asking for more pizzas, and kebabs. The name ‘Mad’ was derived by its own owner’s name, Madi, and his journey towards his current business. It began in 2014, when Madi went to Melbourne, Australia and being granted a working-holiday visa, he challenged himself working in the local restaurant, where he got to know his Syrian-Australian colleague. He spent some time working until he gathered enough money and courage to finally jumpstart his own business. ‘I was really into pizza and stuffs like bread or anything from wheat flour since my culinary school started in 2003. And back in Melbourne, I was introduced to Souvlaki, flat bread stuffed with lamb and tzaziki sauce. It really inspired me to somehow mimic that type of wrap, at that time I didn’t know what to call my business, and spontaneously my friend said ‘Mad Wrap’, and just like that, out of thin air, Mad Wrap Medan was born. Spending a long duration in Melbourne, Madi had develop a deep love for food havens, with international variations available at ease. ‘When I was in Melbourne, I tasted so many food from around the world. And I admired how they improvised the food. They are able to infuse their own ‘Australian’ style for every cuisine. If you go to the Asian restaurant, instead of kacang for the sauce, they’ll serve gado-gado with peanut butter. It shows me that there’s potential in mixing the two different styles.

“You have to force yourself to be more creative to please the customer. Not to please your own taste. In the end of the day, taste and great service counts.” Medan is one of the big metropolitan, yet when it comes to food, people are still reluctant to experiment, making it difficult to stand out, as there are few odd taste completely rejected by typical Medanese palette. ‘Medanese are easy to predict but somehow hard to satisfy. Everybody wants “expensive” food with affordable price. Our biggest challenge is to meet that demands. There are times that we have to substitute the ingredients because we do not want to overwhelm our customers by the price. The most food-friendliest thing to do is to make your food chill-friendly with sambal ABC. If you can conquer that, then you are good to go. Mad Wrap Medan has found a way to make pizza affordable, less hassling, yet fulfilling to the consumers, even when they are constantly being face with the same old dilemma of choosing innovation or risking incomplete bottom line goals. ‘I wanted to prove that we can create something different for the people in Medan, but it gets really tricky when people put their guards up, and for that it sometimes forces us to simply playing it save. When you try to be original, it gets even harder when everyone else is playing the same game, nobody will have the chance to actually think outside the box’. Instagram plays a pivotal role in a small business’s reputation as they count on the consumer’s testimonials. Medan as a city, so big yet so small, everything is intertwined and everyone is somehow interconnected. One bad experience can results in a bandwagon of critics. ‘You have to force yourself to be more creative to please the customer. Not to please your own taste. In the end of the day, taste and great service counts, and it won’t matter how many ‘likes’ you
cravings, then all will go to waste. ‘I don’t believe in playing safe, but we are progressing and improving our menu slowly but surely. There will be the ups and downs but the universe has planned our blessings, all it takes is for us to work on it. Don’t worry so much”. Don’t forget to go and check out @madwrapmedan as they are on their way to serve you lunch, and with their ongoing project of making their own app so you can surely order their upcoming frozen pizza, as token of love for your friends who visited Medan. It will surely be funky souvenirs for you mad souls.

Savira Lavinia A sudden opportunity

Savira Lavinia, born and raised in the great Jakarta Metropolitan, she established her own legacy of fashion through her label Sav Lavin. Started merely out of interest watching her mum running her own boutique, she was inspired by the force of creativity ever since she was 8 years old, making a doll’s dress to designing her friend’s prom dresses. ‘When I was a teenager, I went with my friends to a boutique; the owner wanted me to become a part time fashion designer. I was 14 at the time and I thought she was joking, but she wasn’t. The next day I came to see her and she wasn’t there. I learned that I found my passion and I shouldn’t let opportunities go by’. A true lover of the art, Savira admits to never want to limit herself when it comes to designing, as art and designs fills her live, there’s huge desire to design other products such as shoes, or home decors pieces. Sav Lavin as a brand has been stomping the fashion industry ever since her graduation pieces from Esmod Jakarta, with a story twist for every pieces she

produced, implementing the complexity of traditional handcraft methods and simplifying it to ready-to-wear collections. As social media rises, so does the pressure to be constantly updated, often times ignoring the very basic quality that should have been prioritized. ‘The struggle is common. As fast fashion is dominating, of course fastest wins. If this is a competition based on who’s the slowest, we all would slow down, and the slowest will wins. All you can do is to focus on your own brand, on your own pace. Fashion tends to defines characters, sometimes it encourages us to show, and to hide. As a designer, I pay attention more to who wears my pieces and try to cater to their core, with transformable pieces that can really elevate someone’s vibrant personality.

In Indonesia almost everybody in the region know instant noodles. The practicality and affordable prices made us become dependant on instant products, thus affecting a lifestyle change where instant noodles become one of the food substitutes for rice; the main food for the nation. Naturally, if the instant noodle market in Indonesia is quite a big chance and tempting. One of the brands that dominate the instant noodle market in Indonesia PT. Indofood CBP prospered successfully who made Indomie beyond a brand, but a bestfriend through all kinds of moments. Indomie is one brand of noodle products made in Indonesia, the name derived from the word Indo (Indonesia) and Mie (noodles). Indomie is produced by PT. Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk. The most successful products of the company owned by Salim Sudono is launched into the market since 1970, and the products were first introduced Chicken flavor that has become the staple flavor to the society. The product also stays true to the concept of ‘instant’, requiring only little effort to prepare it as a dish. Variants of flavor are also one of the advantages possessed by Indomie. Indonesian has never tired of taste innovation issued by Indomie. Since it was first established in 1972, Indomie is never outdated by continuing to produce variety of flavors that still makes Indomie the ultimate choice. In 2017 Indomie, has issued 10 new variants that are inspired from the famous traditional dish of each region to remind people of Indonesia that if you are Indonesian, this is your noodle.

If we pay attention closely its advertising promotion on television and also displays in movies, the branding strategy plays a huge role in winning their customers hearts. Through their ads which content is strongly related to all levels of society, such as young people, the elderly, those who work in the village and in the city, it shows that Indomie tries to remind them that Indomie belong to all Indonesians. The image of the Indomie product has been deeply embedded in the brains of every Indonesian, it does not matter what you ‘ll get, you’ ll keep ordering ‘Mam, one Indomie please’. Indomie has established an emotional bond with the consumers. Their competitors may offer similar products, but they can’t offer the same sentimental value. While instant noodle market still compete tightly with each other there is one brand that remains stable and not waver, and that is Indomie, with the taste of a nation.

To l eave o r n o t to l i ve. Photographed by Wirasathya Darmaja via Flickr What do we really know about North Korea? The nations and its citizens, sounded so fictional to the normal world, it seems like a chapter right out of our favorite dystopian novel Hunger Games. Where all the districts are categorized and the people are compartmentalized according to the needs of the great leaders. Pyongyang as the capital will resembles ‘The Capitol’, filled with the elites, the luck 1% of the 1%. But how lucky are they? North Korea is a country consist of 24 hours surveillances, with people who will spend their days watching and reporting back on your every moves. North Korea did not seem to be that threatening from the photos and videos documented the journalist who visited the nation. Little that we know every visit they made, every corner they peeked was simply part of an orchestrated propaganda tour, made by the great leaders to ensure that North Korean is still seen as a great force. Suki Kim, first made a visit to Pyongyang in 2002, she stated in her book that she felt a sense of recognition, coming from a family tragically separated by the war, she knew that the only way to get real answers of what is truly going on there is by actually living there. For that, bravery is an understatement. Finding answers sometimes will only lead us to more questions, and in Suki’s particular situation, it could’ve led her to the lair of Lucifer. Undercover as an evangelical Christian working as an English teacher in PUST (Pyongyang University of Science of Technology), Suki Kim entered the world where the definition of luxury became redundant. During her time in Pyongyang, Suki Kim learned that North Koreans has run a long story where their greatest enemies are the Americans and South Koreans, which in her case, both of her secret identity. Can you picture what happen if she got caught? There’s a line in a song where they stated ‘in one hurried breath’, in which later on Suki found out it truly means that if one day the world would break, the North Koreans will kill every single Americans and North Koreans, one by one, in one hurried breath. Hidden deeply in her lesson plans, the real notes of her journey will begin in page 100, which she will then save in an SD card that she hid when the lights are off in which she carries in her body everywhere. What happen to the sons of the elites that Suki Kim had taught for the 6 months she lived in Pyongyang? They learn nothing but elaborated lies. Simply because not everyone is as lucky to have their passion into a profession. So every single day it never feels like a routine, but simply having a blast. The bonus is that I get paid to actually live my life.

I would also shed a lot of tears when I am heart-broken, and when I watch something touching from those shows of American Idols or America’s got talents. “I aim to bring laughter to the lifes of people I want them to find a reason to laugh or simply smile a little” What are the drastic changes in your life that happen after you becomes a public figure. There’s no drastic changes because I don’t feel like it is necessary to do any kind of changes. But I stopped commenting on other people’s life through social media, or even gossips, because there’s certain empathy now that I am also in the public eyes. What are the most painful experiences you had with social media? Those who just wants to be friends with just because of my social media followings. It makes me really sad wondering what would they get out of it. What good deeds do we get when we get more followers or likes? There’s also those who purposely created a face account just to troll around my profile. It baffles me how people never knew me personally and somehow feels entitled to criticize me. I just need to remember that those trolls aren’t the one who keeps my paycheck. If you live in the 20s, when there is no such thing as connections, what profession do you think you’ll be doing? Well, according to my google search, there was a great war in the 20s. Where Chanel no.5 perfume was launched and where the Jazz age initiated and where 2.5 million radios are broadcasted on hundreds of stations. I loved the Jazz and the radio most. But, I may have to go with selling the Chanel perfume during the 20s. Batman and Superman are both an alter ego. If you can create a super alter ego, what would you be, what would be your specialty? I haven’t figure out the name yet, but I want to be able to jump everywhere I want. When I get bored, I can just simply jump to Sabang, jump to drink coffee in Pulau Rubiah. What are you trying to accomplish through your choice of art? I don’t want much, I just want to be able to continue doing what I’m doing. I just want to keep entertaining people with the media that I have. If people find it amusing, then it is a blessings that I need to constantly be grateful for. If you can have any other life, what kind would you pick? I would’t pick any other life, perhaps simply a better version than I am now to my family and friends. 46

Sneak a peek at whats happening behind the creatives.
Photographed by : Vincent Rajali We have heard it all, from practically everyone who was born in Medan or simply passing by. Medan is one city where the art was hidden deep into oblivion. People always seek elsewhere for an artist, without a single tinge of consideration to peek on Medan. This year, we decided that while achieving business deals and stability is important, we have to take it to another level. Without appreciation, there will no growth, no improvement, no sense of belongings when it comes to our own city. We have always praised the outsiders for being artistic, yet we have failed in acknowledging the talents inside our own tribe. Well, say no more. We created ‘Eutopia’ as a love letter from us to all the aspiring artist and the artistic souls in Medan who craves to see vibrant colors that are often painted gray. Eutopia, where the good gets wild was inspired from our thirst of having a place of our own that is filled with every kind of people, mind, from the different tribe, united for the love of art. It’s not the perfect world, but our love and acceptance are 52
what makes it imperfectly perfect. From our notorious art exhibition filled with neon lights and artworks from various artist, we also held workshops for those who crave new knowledge or simply filling up their curiosity. There was branding, music, beauty and fashion photography, music performances, talk shows that made Eutopia the pillar which we can built on. Through Eutopia, we hope to urge every artist from Medan who lives here or elsewhere that it is time to campaign for our love and hope for this city. Only we can innovate our city, through art that will fill that void in our daily life. We hope to continue this movement and garner more interest to know that Medan too, can be an utopia.
