The whispers of the neighbours, the hum drum of the hawker stalls making char kue tiaw, the subtle noise of coffee machine and a fresh greetings delivered every morning by our parents asking, ‘Have you eaten’ or ‘Why are you not eating yet’ will always remain to be the best jingle of our life. No matter where we go, there is nothing that can replace the mixed feelings we have to our hometown, the love and hate relationship that have been developed over the course of childhood and puberty. Some of us decided to leave their hometown, then came back with expectations that are sometimes met, and sometimes, causes us with more heartbreaks, that even Shakespeare cannot grasp. Medan, as a city has been famous for the skill set in business that the people had acquired. No negotiation left hanging and no opinions left without rebuttal. With the growing amount of artist, writers, designers and photographers, Medan has been improving for the past years, seen from the amount of talent it contains.One problem however, those talents was always eager to leave Medan as heartbreaks and frustrations were sadly accumulated. Hendra Kusuma, a talented fashion photographer is one of the hidden gems that Medan does not seem to earn the privilege to have him commute back to his old town. The city itself has stereotypically been known as a city of tough love, making it hard for some to truly express their aesthetics without the risk of being unreasonably judged.‘There’s actually a lot of stereotypes when it comes to Medan, such as the habit of being stingy or borderline a cheapskate, secluded, racist, but the good ones such as hardworking people, and profit oriented. However, it is simple a stereotype, a label on the surface that shouldn’t be the ultimate way of judgement. People live by different values than us, so I believe it is important to legitimately understand

MUNCHIES

G AT E A U @gateaunaturalfood | Photographed by : Januardy Wiaya

Just like everything sweet in French, Gateau has the great potential to give us all the sweet savouries to last us all year round. Gateau in French means Cake, and for some of us it means unlimited source of happiness. Located in S. Parman with a lot of other food establishment, Gateau has surely made an impression on us with its approach to au naturel food. If you are looking for ways to embrace a healthy lifestyle, you might want to check out how well Gateau provides menu that is delicious, yet still making sure that healthy is their number one priority. While still appreciating the strong palette Medanese has, Gateau has successfully infuse their own spin with healthy but yummy munchies. While others are busy competing with their signature coffee, Gateau played the rebellious role in in providing their customers with choices of tea that caters to different needs. Chamomile, peppermint and other assorted tea well suited to calm the nerves and a great pair for their signature cakes.

Supported with their interior that does not scream loud, it serves you simplicity and serenity. The Choco Prune, with fresh hint of rum aroma and a little exciting flavour, although not too familiar creates a deep craving for us who loves to try new things. For coffee lovers, the fruitcake is the one delight you don’t want to miss out, especially if you plan to share it with your beloved. With a lot of the food innovations, some might be skeptic at how long Gateau will catch the tough heart of Medanese, who can be a little harsh when it comes to fresh new things. Food however has always been the biggest trend and the biggest industry to experiment in Medan. However, what will be their weapon is their consistency in the quality of raw goods they use. FASHION

Naga Satya S u it it u p

@satyagrahaofficial | Photographed : Riandy Yulvian

Suit up! If you remember the popular TV series ‘How I met your Mother’, Barney Stinson, one of the main character will always be seen in suits. With different colours, patterns and lapels, regardless on what occasion, Barney will always wear a suit. A symbol of classic gentleman and style. A suit may look simple on first glance, but the history of a gentleman’s suit dates back to the 17th Century where people with different social status will wear different types of suits, for casual and formal dining. Kings and the aristocrats were the ones among the privilege group of people that will be seen often in suits. Fast forward to the current age of 2017, suits can now be worn by both men and women, with eclectic styles that represent their unique persona. Fashion designers are now more liberated to experiment with the norms, making a suit beyond a formality, but an identity. ‘ I feel that as long as we are comfortable and confident, we can wear anything we’d like. we are entitled to express ourselves, but aesthetics are counted for. The choices of garment must be carefully selected and, whatever critique one might get should always be embraced. Suits are typically seen and worn during a formal occasions, especially in a conventional Asian country, that’s why I’d like to wear suits to places I deemed appropriate to showcase that we can all wear suits in different ways’. With a lot of designers jumped to the party dresses bandwagon, Naga is adamant that his signature dandy persona will give him the right kind of customers. Using his social media, Naga Satya is known to strut a pose in every party he attended, and he never fails to make an entrance. 30

‘My brand, Satyagraha, is more than simply tailoring a suit. The old connotation that suit is only stereotypically worn to a formal gathering is no longer applicable as my target market is now more experimental when it comes to adapting the dandy gentleman style that I try to infuse. However, I will always put the best effort to engage with the clients and figure out their exact needs. Everyone has their own spin and style and we always try to infuse as much of our client’s character as possible’. ‘Medan as a business arena can be tough due to the lack of understanding of why such bespoke designs are costly. Quality does not transcend, therefore some customers will opt for mass produced materials. But i have committed to educate myself to educate my clients and establish a sentimental connection. I want them to understand value so they see the suit as something that will enhance and complete their look and personality, and gave you that extra confidence. With fast-fashion corporation such as H&M and Zara, how does one compete in the suits department where price is often times the main consideration. ‘Bespoke designs is obviously a lot more expensive than the ones in the department store, however, I have learn that the right customers will come. Medan has such a strong word-of-mouth marketing ploy, that is why I will always personally interview my clients and try to imprint an impression where a perfectly made suit made just for you will make you feel like a king, it’s the little things that those big departments store just don’t provide. ‘Technically speaking, menswear might seem simple, but it takes a lot of gentle complexity to finish a look. Knowledge in pattern with unique form and sizes is crucial because not every gentleman has the exact body type. People also have different level of comfort, so knowing different types of materials and the effects it has on someone’s skin will get you far’. ‘I am very blessed and thankful that even though Medan has always been a tough crowd, the stories that I share through my social media always connects me to the right customers. They are curious and fashionably savvy, and aware of the changes that are happening. We all need to move forward. The classic black suits will always be there but you have to put your own twist if you want to stand out. What better way to walk into a room and make a grand entrance, without saying any words?’. The new year has finally come, so does our fresh motivation to innovate. We are honoured that we get to work with clients that shares the common goals to heighten creativity in Medan. With the upcoming SAB (School of Accounting & International Business), we get to design their logo and booklets and we hope it’ll be the start of an amazing journey for those who wish to seek higher education. We are also happy to continue working with UNPRI (Universitas Prima Indonesia) with their latest #TheBestChoice campaign to welcome prospective students, as well as designing the flyer for their CSR project, Hero is Us, where great exercise and great wills are combine. On the fun spectrum, we get to design a new face for an annual events of Radiant City, making neon geometric patterns that highlights the characters of the visitors.

Sneak a peek at whats happening behind the creatives.

From beautiful looking ladies, to beautiful munchies, we are so delighted that we get to work with Ika Pertiwi, the winner of Miss Grand International from her profile shots to fashion spreads. We also get to work with Medan’s most notable creative people, Howie the master of patisserie, Kartoe, a luxury stationary designer, Steve Salon de Coiffure that beautifies the ladies, a wonderful work to celebrate the Lunar New Year, with love of crimson everywhere. In the culinary world, we are happy to welcome Gateau, a new restaurant, a new sanctuary for us who grew tired of the same old things, with their signature cakes, we hoped that we capture the most delicious parts of Gateau, so all of you can experience feast even by simply looking at it. With Moses, we get to work on their lyric video, playing with the beauty of multimedia and different dimension to heighten the meaning of the song.v
