This report will be researching the lingerie brand Boux Avenue and its competitors. It will also look at the current strapless bra and strapless swimwear market, focussing on the components used in these garments. Further to this, it will look into future trends.

“Born out of a love for lingerie, nightwear, swimwear and all things romantic, Boux Avenue brings traditional service, superior fit and outstanding quality to a modern and beautiful setting.” (Boux Avenue Ltd., 2016) The brand is owned by former Dragons’ Den invester, Theo Paphitis and he decided to name the brand after a French waitress and was launched in 2011. Boux Avenue has 25 stores in the UK and is rapidly expanding globally with its international franchise opportunities. Fig. 1

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Boux Avenue story is a teasing transatlantic tale born out of a love for lingerie and all things romantic.â&#x20AC;? (Boux Avenue Ltd., 2016) Lingerie at Boux Avenue has a classic style using delicate lace and sumptouos silk satins. The pieces are trend focussed, but not trend led so that they will remain in style for every season. The lingerie creates a feeling of romance and elegance. Fig. 3

Boux Avenueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current swimwear offering has a range of strapless and multiway style bikinis. They do not currently offer any tankinis or one-pieces. The designs are very print focussed, with a few that are plain for those who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like print. They offer both padded and non-padded styles with soft and moulded cups They have a few triangle style bikini tops that are non-wired, but most of their offering is wired.

Boux Avenueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beachwear offering includes kaftans and sarongs, however they are not the only popular beachwear styles. Dresses are a popular option as they can come in varying styles like maxi dresses, bandeau dresses and shirt dresses. Playsuits, harem pants and shorts are commonly worn with bandeau or tank tops for more coverage over swimwear when walking around a resort, shopping, eating and sightseeing.

Victoria’s Secret currently offer an extensive range of swimwear and beachwear, however it has recently been released that they will be cutting their swimwear range from the business (Mau, 2016). In their swimwear range, they offer bikinis, tankinis and one-pieces. For beachwear, they offer sarongs, kaftans, dresses, playsuits, jumpsuits and sweaters. Their swimwear pricing ranges from - £18.64 - £120. Their beachwear pricing ranges from - £26.82 - £107.27. (Victoria’s Secret, 2016).

4.3 - PRICING COMPARISON This pricing comparison chart shows that in relation to Boux Avenueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main competitors, they have a lower price point for their swimwear offering. Online store ASOS sells its own brand garment plus high street names and designer names hence the very contrasting points.

4.4 - MARKET POSITIONING Boux Avenue is a high street brand that only sells its own named garments. It is a mid-market level brand because its prices aren’t as low as high street brands like Primark who wouldn’t be considered a competitor due to this, and its prices don’t reach as high as high street department stores like Debenhams who carry designer brands. ASOS has been placed in the middle of the price axis on this marketing matrix due to the range of prices starting as low as £3.99 ranging up to £269.00.

5.2 - FABRIC RESEARCH As I have chosen to design a swimwear collection for Boux Avenue, I looked into lycra and the different properties of the stretches. I also looked at different ways of printing on to the lycra, such as screen printing and digital printing.

Jane Dungate Swimwear 5.3 - HYDROCHROMIC INK RESEARCH

Whilst shopping with my boyfriend for a pair of swimming trunks we came across a pair of water-reactive trunks in Vilebrequin. The trunks look plain when dry, but as soon as they become wet a pattern appears. This is achieved by using a hydrochromic ink. (SFXC and Good Life Innovations Ltd, 2016)

After researching on WGSN, the key swimwear shapes for S/S 17 involve vintage styles, such as the high leg brief, high leg tanga brief and 1940s style swimwear. They also include a lot strapping criss crossing or wrapping round the body. They also feature cut outs.

5.6 - COLOUR DEVELOPMENT For colour development, I took swatches of fabrics that matched the colour trends that were on WGSN. I then put them together in colour combinations to see what colours worked well together for colour blocking and contrasting.

5.7 - CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT My concept took inspiration from a trip to Lisbon in April 2016. Photographs of the pavements, a bus shelter roof and aquarium gave me a starting point for developing the concept. The pavements were made out of hand carved tiles which led me on to looking at mosaics. Lisbon has links to Arabic culture, I focussed on Arabic designs in mosaics.

CONCEPT ONE This concept takes inspiration from the jellyfish in the aquarium and the bus shelter roof. This led on to looking at things that glow in the dark like the jellyfish do and how when the sun shines through the glass roof of the bus shelter the image comes alive and glows. This then led on to thinking about the stars and space.

Jane Dungate Swimwear CONCEPT TWO This concept takes inspiration from the mosaic pavements. This led on to looking at mosaics made out of stained glass and glass sculptures. I also looked at turtles because their shells are like little mosaics on their back.

This concept takes inspiration from glass and the way light shines through it creating patterns. I also looked at the effect of light on water which led on to thinking about glitter and holographic materials.

6 - RESEARCH SUMMARY From this research I learnt that Boux Avenue don’t currently offer and tankini or one-piece options in their swimwear range. I will design some pieces to cover this that are in keeping with Boux Avenue’s design ethos. In terms of beachwear, they don’t offer very much. However, I want to focus on designing swimwear options to be worn under the beachwear. From researching current Boux Avenue styles, they focus mainly on designing wired bikini tops to offer support whilst still looking pretty. I will mainly design wired options, but with a few non-wired styles that would easily mix and match with the different briefs. Boux Avenue has a lot of variety between print and plain options, so I will make sure to add both of these elements to my designs so that there is an option for everyone. Again, these will be easy to mix and match so that the customer can create their own looks based on what styles they prefer. The beachwear research from the main competitors shows a mixture of options that are beach cover ups, such as kaftans and sarongs, and more structured garments that can be worn over swimwear whilst walking around a resort or going sightseeing, such as tops and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses. When designing the swimwear peices, they need to be suitable to be worn under all these options and if anything is on show, then it needs to be a feature in itself. Boux Avenue offers a large range of sizes (28A - 38G), however not all styles are suitable for the entire size range. Options will be designed in each range to cover the different sizes. WGSN research suggests that trends for Spring/Summer 2017 will involve quite a lot of geometric shapes, strapping, print, colour blocking and cut outs. The shapes used for swimwear will incorporate high legs, high waistlines and vintage styles. Colour research suggests bright and bold colours are used, with a few neons. In terms of fabrics used, 4-way stretch lycra will be the main fabric with a treated cotton gusset. Boux Avenue doesn’t use a lot of embellishments in their designs, so I will not be incorporating that into the designs.
