Welcome to the Big South Fork Visitor Guide (BSFVG) – your guide to the majestic Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BSFNRRA), your outdoor playground. The Big South Fork offers something for everyone all year round with thousands of acres of places to explore. If you love the mountains, nature, scenic bluffs, wildlife and serenity, this is the place for you. Come see why so many families spend weekends, vacations and daytrips exploring the scenic roads, off the beaten path treasures and miles and miles of trails for hikers, horseback riders and kayakers. The Burckhard family loves to hike and some of our best hiking experiences have been in the winter, when nature is sleeping, but the views are wide open. Bluff views, mountain ranges and indigenous ferns, rhododendrons and wildlife are abundant. Spring blesses us with color and scents from the indigenous flowers that bloom along the trails accentuated by the many species of birds chirp away. Red buds and dogwoods dance across the mountain ranges and there is nothing sweeter than sitting atop a mountain bluff, enjoying a picnic lunch, soaking in the magnificent views and thanking the good Lord above for his beauty and majestic splendor. Summer welcomes vacationers with horseback riding, camping, swimming, kayaking and hundreds of miles of trails for hiking. There are plenty of little shops on the downtown squares - in Jamestown, Oneida and Whitley City and wonderful family restaurants offering a variety of food. Visit The Dairy Bar in Whitley City, KY. One of the favorites of this authentic ‘50’s style diner is their delicious hand formed, fresh ground chuck hamburgers with crispy French fries or onion rings with the carhops and waitresses waiting to spoil you with their southern hospitality. Come on in for a delicious milkshake in any of their numerous flavors. Bacaras just outside of Jamestown, TN is also a favorite. They are considered a destination for good food, good hospitality and great atmosphere. German Chef/Owner Kurt loves to cook up his famous German cuisine like schnitzel, sauerbraten, spaetzle, and hearty cowboy steaks. Folks drive hours to have a meal with Kurt and enjoy his gemutlichkeit. Camping is tremendous in the Big South Fork with many places to choose from. The newest campground is Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins. They are conveniently located off of Hwy. 127. Fall is absolutely stunning. The patchwork created by the acres of hardwood forest provides for an excellent leaf peeping experience. Although the economy has challenged many families, this is the place to come for a low cost, enjoyable and simple vacation. There are many beautiful cabins and chalets for rent at affordable prices, especially if several families spilt the cost, cook most meals and enjoy the trails and the small towns. Hook up with Cowboy Larry McMillan at Southeast Pack Trips for a two hour guided horse ride or spend the day or night with him at Charit Creek and experience a rustic hostel with campfire cooking and delicious meals from the dining room. You can bring your horses, rent horses or take guided rides with experienced cowboys, novice or experienced, there are trails for all. Brimstone Recreation started off as one of the best places to ride ATV’s and off road vehicles. It is now the place to ride, explore and even kayak down the river. Brimstone is a destination within the BSFNRRA that offers camping, cabin rentals, ATV trails, events and expertise to the outdoor enthusiast. The BSFNRRA is a great place to take the kids and let them experience horseback riding and the outdoors while having some quality family time. Life gets so busy with jobs, school and activities and this is a perfect place to slow down and relax. Come see why so many folks have fallen in love with the area. Some have relocated or retired to the area they enjoy so much. Pastures are lush, land is plentiful, farms, homes and cabins dot the countryside and the cost of living and taxes are low, compared to the big city lifestyle. There is nowhere like the BSFNRRA and we hope that you visit for a day, a week or stay for a lifetime. Enjoy the simple lifestyle, experience the rich beauty of our beloved Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. There’s a lot more inside! Happy Trails! Cedar Creek Cattle Company Cedar Creek Cattle Company and New Beginnings Youth Ranch are changing the social landscape with their program for young people from around the Big South Fork area and Tennessee. Taking a non-traditional approach to handling troubled teens and young adults; Mike Archambault and his Mom, Joan, are transforming today’s youth by bringing them to the ranch, and allowing them to work with wild mustangs. Mike and his Mom have ground rules that all coming to live there have to abide by. They believe in the youth, instill morals, and teach them about character, the value of hard work, love of the outdoors, appreciation of family and church with amazing results. Many of today’s troubled teens are for the most part, the result of non-traditional home environments, neglect, abandonment, gaming (XBOX, video games, TV and internet) and hours upon hours of being alone with no social interaction. Playing outside is a thing of the past for most children as well as is sitting around a dinner table for a home cooked meal with their parents and family talking about the day’s events. Most children, teens and young adults today spend more time in front of the TV, video games and the computer than they do in school and play time together. This is having an adverse effect on our children’s health with obesity soaring in America and their emotional state being very fragile. Most teens act out in a cry for attention and love. This is evident at “New Beginnings”, a program that Mike and Joan started several years ago. I/“Annie” had the privilege of witnessing the tremendous effect that

love, faith, hope and hard work have had on these teens. After speaking to several of them, the general theme is that they thank “Mr. Mike” and “Grandma Joan” for taking them in, believing in them and teaching them the skills that they learned with the wild Mustangs that they each adopted. Each participant in the program is matched with a suitable wild mustang. These mustangs are their charge to care for and teach/ tame. The children and the horses have a lot in common. Neither has learned to handle their emotions and often have anger and trust issues. Through the program, they both learn to trust, understand, and control their emotions. All of this positive energy will carry on for the rest of their life. One young man had been in 43 foster homes in a thirteen year period and had a lot of anger issues. Most of these teens come into the program when their parents and/or social services have given up hope. They have tried all the traditional programs and are on several drugs to “fix” the problems. New Beginnings believes in the power of “JESUS”. They come off the medications, some cold turkey; some are weaned off and are put into a ranch/working family environment where all help to keep the ranch and farm operational. Mr. Mike and Joan do this as a labor of love, not for money. Most of the teens that live at New Beginnings come with just the clothes on their back and do not

pay tuition, due to financial situations. Shockingly, today there are over 2.3 million homeless teens or teens that really don’t have anywhere to call home. New Beginnings is “home” for these teens. They learn social skills, the power of hard work, respect, compassion and patience, and the beauty of having a loving family with unconditional love from Mike, Joan, and the Lord. Mike and Joan moved into the Big South Fork area many years ago to operate their Black Angus cattle breeding facility. The project was larger than they anticipated, causing a need for horses to help in maintenance. Then, Mike started giving riding lessons, breaking horses and taking folks out on trail rides. There are many trails that lead out from Cedar Creek Cattle Farm and New Beginnings. Theses days, the ranch kids from New Beginnings all help in saddling up horses, keeping the horses groomed and their stalls clean, and helping “Mr. Mike” with the guests that want to ride, learn how to ride and have a great day out on the many groomed trails that meander through the woods/forest, along creeks and over rivers. The young people love being a part of the New Beginnings “family”. Mike’s biggest regret is that he cannot take in more teens, due to space restrictions. He hopes to raise enough money to build a bunkhouse for ten more teens in the near future. If you feel led to this ministry or would like to learn more about New Beginnings, contact Mike Archambault by phoning him at 931-260-1650, or visiting their website at www.cedarcreekcattlecompany.com or www.newbeginningsyouthranch.com. Give teens a chance by teaching them old-fashioned, tried and true skills that seem to have been forgotten with the new technology and the ever changing global world. I believe there is a saying that “Less is more” and this is a perfect example of how these teens have flourished with less materialistic things and more of the simple things in life. Hard work, good meals, lots of unconditional love, family and God.

They serve excellent fish and chips, and other English fare. If you are looking for a water adventure, Brimstone has added kayak and canoe rentals ($25/person on the New River) to their line of adventure packages.

Many outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Big South Fork come in for the day to rent the new Kawasaki Teryx or a Rhino and explore the trails with a guide or solo. This is a great activity for families and friends, and the visitation at Brimstone has grown year after year, bringing over 30,000 visitors to this wonderful destination. Their map gives detailed information on all of the trails, places of interest, and landmarks; helping you plan your memorable trip. Brimstone prides itself in its two signature events, the White Knuckle event during Memorial Weekend and Brimstone’s Side by Side SXS Round-Up in the fall (Sept. 2-4, 2011 with a live performance by Tracy Lawrence). These functions are very popular, bringing in thousands of outdoor enthusiasts. Many compete in their sport, enjoy the music, eat delicious food, and hang out with like minded adventurers! These popular events have also grown in the last years and Brimstone continues to add to each to make them more entertaining! The SXS/ATV Roundup has the “King of the Mountain” - a fun and challenging event. This year they expect to attract more than 5,000 OHV riders from multiple states and countries to enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and competitive outlet. Branded as the “hold on tight” event of the year, the White Knuckle event attracts offroad enthusiasts from all over North America. It is poised to become the “Woodstock of ATV and SXS Events” going into its seventh year with off-road enthusiasts attendance doubling each year. The event will take place on May 25-27, 2012 at Brimstone Recreation. There will be guided rides with local trail masters, kid’s zone, and a moonshine run. Additional activities include mud bogs, sled pulls, ladies dash for cash, and pole bending. Friday will kick off with easy, moderate, and difficult guided rides, and end with a meet and greet in the Huntsville Town Square. The Moonshine Run will bring the weekend to a close on Sunday evening. And don’t forget the manufacturer demo areas where you can get a feel for the latest machines from Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Can-Am. Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat If you’re looking for a great spot for your next vacation or getaway, try Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat. They offer twelve spacious, luxurious, comfortable vacation homes/cabins in a gated community bordering the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BSFNRRA). Getting away to spend quality time with family and friends is what a lot of folks dream about. Yet it is so easy for this to become a reality. For just a short drive from Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga, and other major cities, your family and friends can rent one of these grand chalets that are located just minutes from hiking and horseback trails. Our family along with two of our sons’ friends - Jacob and Bryce spent the weekend at “Hanging it Up”, one of the rentals in the Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat community. Each cabin is spacious and surrounded by three to five acres of woodland, some with magnificent overlooks. “Hanging it Up” is a fantastic cabin with a lot of character. It has a beautiful granite island in the wonderfully stocked kitchen ideal for entertaining which I really enjoyed. The boys had a wonderful time playing outside on the swings. We built a campfire in the fire pit out back and made s’mores one night. We all soaked in the hot tub and gazed at the canopy of stars overhead. The boys also delighted in the walks down the country road to the basketball hoop where they played basketball for hours, including some serious “around the world”.

bird theme with a comfortable built in window settee to curl up and read or sleep. The upstairs loft offered lots of enjoyment for the boys, as they played foosball, watched TV and a movie, and just enjoyed the cabin lifestyle. The cabin has tile and hardwood floors throughout with delightful beds dressed in high thread count linens. You can enjoy satellite TV throughout the cabin. I was even able to check my email, as “Hanging it Up” has wireless internet. This was true luxury and a totally relaxing weekend. Our hosts, Inez and Jack Troxell retired from nursing and the park service with a vision to turn their family land into their dream retirement home and to develop this amazing piece of property into a great place for others to enjoy as well. They offer twelve gorgeous cabins that folks have built as their dream homes over the last ten years through their rental program. These vacation homes/cabins rival any cabin or chalet in Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains. As an added bonus there is no congestion here, no smog, and the rentals are very affordable. Each cabin has its own personality and run anywhere from $125.00 to $219.00 per night with cabin capacity ranging from 6-12 people - all dependent upon the number of bedrooms and amenities. Many of the cabins have multiple night discounts, highlighted on the easy to navigate website www.laurelfork.com. There is a lot to do at Laurel Fork Rustic Retreat and the great outdoors of the BSFNRRA including great hikes, such as the Yellow Cliff Trailhead for riders and hikers which connects to some of the other great Big South Fork trails. Even if you don’t hike or trail ride, what a great way to relax, immerse in God’s beauty around you, soak in the hot tub, and enjoy the simple lifestyle with family and friends. Come for a weekend retreat, a special occasion, or book a week in the Big South Fork and let the Troxell family spoil you with their wonderful southern hospitality. Bring a group of friends to help share in the experience. You’ll be glad you did. For reservations, call 423-286-5135 or log onto: www.laurelfork.com.

The great country lanes are quite suitable for hiking, walking, and even bike riding. One can ride or walk about 2.5 miles from a cabin to scenic Hwy. 294 without worries about traffic or wild dogs. The route is lined with pastures, cows, horses, and rolling hills. What a paradise! I had the opportunity to enjoy a little down time in the screened-in porch where I read a good book and watched in wonder at the abundance of birds at the bird feeders. The cabin’s high ceilings and stunning windows opened up to the trees, wildlife, and the beautiful blue sky. Each room was decorated to perfection. The master bedroom had a blue

Kicking Back Cabin decorated very tastefully with beautiful dressers, large closets, and flat screen TV’s with DirecTV hookup should you wish to watch your favorite sports team or favorite show. KBC also has WI-FI, so I could set up my computer and check e-mail. I also had a cell phone signal, so I could check my Blackberry, too! I love to cook and entertain. The kitchen at KBC is amazing with well stocked cabinets - a feature that kept me from having to run into town for supplies. Spices, Tupperware, utensils, condiments in the refrigerator, candles, tablecloths - it was all there. There were even perfectly rolled newspaper tubes to start the fire out back. The backyard was set up for relaxing. There is a barn with 5 stalls, a fire pit, horseshoes, three hammocks and a superb huge barbecue grill. The back deck held the hot tub (also accessible from the master bedroom) where we spent some time relaxing and listening to music from the backyard entertainment system. KBC is also wonderfully landscaped. You could escape to any number of places in the house to sit and read a book, such as the large front porch swing, comfortable oversized leather coaches in the living room, and out back in the great lawn furniture. We walked around KBC and were delighted with the equestrian friendly community which offered plenty of road to walk and admire the beautiful homes, horses, and ranches - from the beautiful gray maned stud named Buddy at Cross Creek Stables to Pam and Gary Delk’s wonderful Spruce Creek Stables and Campground. Everyone is there to share their love of horses, live, work, and play in this beautiful, inviting equestrian community. Kicking Back Cabin is truly a one-of-a-kind cabin, perfect for a family retreat, girlfriend’s or romantic getaway, or week long vacation in the Big South Fork. It is ideally situated in the Big South Fork and minutes from Jamestown, Oneida, Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, and Pickett State Park. Just like their motto says: “The Big South Fork provides you with a great place to play and Kicking Back Cabin will provide you with a great place to stay! Visit online at www.kickingbackcabin.com or call 931-537-9144 or 931-544-2872.

The Kicking Back Cabin (KBC) in the Big South Fork is a jewel that exceeded my expectations. My husband, Terry and sons, Blake and Grant, and I spent a special weekend at KBC. The comfortable and luxurious cabin is nestled in Spruce Creek Acres – an equestrian styled community with marvelous well groomed trails (many of which lead directly into the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area), beautiful homes with acreage and pasture, and a common pavilion area for the friendly homeowners to enjoy. Owners, Kathy and Shawn Larsen, love to entertain and enjoy the trails. They have taken their passion and created a perfect home away from home in their log cabin filled with many special touches. Walking into the KBC surpassed all of my expectations. I was amazed by the special touches and beautifully appointed rooms throughout the home. For example, the master bedroom had comfy terry robes for Terry and I, plus Bath and Body Works shower and bath gel for the romantic Jacuzzi. There were the wonderful heavenly beds with high thread count sheets and divine comforters and blankets. Fresh flowers adorned the house - something that I find very delightful. Each bedroom was

Dining at Big South Fork Bacaras Restaurant is a must dining destination in the Big South Fork. Kurt Schlegel, owner and Chef of Bacaras offers some delicious, hand cut steaks, fresh seafood, daily specials and of course his German specialties. Bacaras is truly a unique, memorable dining experience in a cozy, rustic and charming atmosphere, tucked away off a scenic windy road in Jamestown, TN, one of the gateway cities of the Big South Fork. Kurt has been serving loyal clients for over twenty years and is known to offer delicious food with great ambience. This has become an excellent place for a special occasion, first date, anniversary, birthday celebration or for those tired, hungry hikers and horseback riders. The homemade food is plentiful and everything is made from scratch, including the delicious hearty artisan bread that is made on premise. Kurt loves to cook with his fresh herbs and vegetables that he grows seasonally in his garden next to the restaurant. The flavors dance on your tongue. Kurt has a loyal following and folks drive one to two hours to delight in his awesome dishes, in a romantic, delightful setting. Some of the favorites include the 20 ounce Cowboy Steak, hand cut and grilled to perfection. Kurt loves to grill his vegetables which compliment a copious melt in your mouth piece of steak. Another favorite is the fresh grilled salmon, grilled shrimp and other fresh Atlantic seafood served with smashed potatoes, fresh vegetables or rice. October is the time to celebrate German food, German music and a great festive atmosphere. Some of “Annie’s” favorites include Wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, homemade spaetzle (German homemade noodles) and rotkraut (braised red cabbage). German cooking is dear to my (“Annie’s”) heart, as I spent many childhood summers in Southern Germany with Oma and Opa (Grandma and Grandpa) and savored the German cooking. Bacaras also offers a scrumptious Sunday brunch from 11:00 – 3:00 PM served family style

and always offers slow cooked prime rib, and two other meats that might include chicken, pork and salmon or other type of fish. This is accompanied by potatoes, rice and fresh vegetables. Linda is an awesome lady and is passionate about offering a wonderful experience to her guests that come to delight in her cooking. Linda offers a hearty, country home cooked breakfast for her overnight guests, but also offers dinners by reservation to those wishing to experience this delightful Victorian bed and breakfast and wonderful meals. Linda is known throughout the country for her love of Rugby, and her passion for keeping the history and memories alive through her cookbooks. Most of her recipes in the cookbooks are intertwined in her daily meals at Grey Gables. Linda also loves to offer a proper tea on Wednesday afternoons and has themed events throughout the year. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are quite special and fill up very quickly. Let Linda and her daughter Tiffany and granddaughter Kelly (and the rest of the family) spoil you with wonderful down home cooking, memorable meals and a wonderful experience in a historic town. Visit Grey Gables on line www.rugbytn.com or phone Linda to plan that special meal, family event or surprise weekend getaway for your loved one. Bon Appetit!

Big South Fork Scenic Railway Family Railroad Adventure

Big South Fork

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway allows passengers to experience one of the last remaining company towns, with an operational railroad and reconstructed coal camp originally built during the early nineteen hundreds. The Scenic Railway is located in the National Historic District of Stearns, Kentucky, which is on the northern end of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Your family will enjoy the 16 mile round trip upon the 110 year old, Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, known as the “Route of the Painted Rocks.” This ride is full of spectacular vistas, lush vegetation and free flowing mountain streams as it descends 600 feet into the river gorge. The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and remnants from the communities that once lined the railway now serve as reminders of days gone by.

railway A National Park Concessionaire

Regular departures, April through October, upon the K&T Special take 3 hours and include a new section of track through the mining camp of Worley. Worley was the largest mining community along the K&T. The train makes a stop at Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp, a National Park Service outdoor interpretive site. Blue Heron was built by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company in 1937 and operated until 1962. The coal camp contains “ghost structures” and each structure has visual and oral history exhibits. Visitors to Blue Heron can walk into the face of the mine as well as cross over the river on the tipple bridge. The Railway offers additional experiences by taking a Cab Ride, Caboose Rental, a Rivers & Rails Package, and a new Saturday Pass for those folks that would like more time to hike and explore Blue Heron. Your ticket aboard the K&T Special also includes admission to the McCreary County Museum. The Museum is located in the Historic District and is within walking distance of the Depot. The Museum focuses on early pioneer life through the boom times of the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company. You should allow 1½ to 2 hours to spend touring the Museum as well as shopping in one of the many unique craft and gift shops in downtown Stearns. The railway has live bluegrass music in the depot half an hour before each train departs. In November, take a trip on the new “Run to the Gorge.” Enjoy riding in heated cars into the Gorge of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The November excursion will allow passengers to experience our beautiful area without the foliage. You’ll be amazed by the difference. Round trips are 1 ½ hours in length and depart rain or shine. The Big South Fork Scenic Railway has special event trains like the Haunted Hollow Express in October and the Santa Express Train in December. Many new exciting activities are planned for 2012, so be sure to visit our website for more details. The BSFSR excursion cars range from enclosed to open air and passengers are seated first come, first serve. Passengers should dress accordingly for the weather. The Railway operates rain or shine and all trains depart on Eastern Time. For more information or reservations on Big South Fork Scenic Railway, go to www.bsfsry.com or call 800-4625664.

The Dairy Bar The Dairy Bar is an essential stop! This authentic old-fashioned diner is located in Whitley City, KY (the northeast corner of the Big South Fork) and minutes from one of “Annie’s” favorites - the Big South Fork Scenic Railway. The Dairy Bar was established in 1933 and is the heart of Whitley City. They have great authentic curbside service, delicious hamburgers, onion rings and milkshakes. The Dairy Bar has its claim to fame as being one of those “must see diners” listed in the “Eating Your Way Across Kentucky” and “101 Place to Eat in Kentucky” books. Folks drive from all over the state and the country to eat at The Dairy Bar with owner Mark often times being asked to autograph the book. The Dairy Bar brings back memories, especially for baby boomers. You could say nostalgia kicks in for some as they reminisce of sitting out in front with their special date in that gorgeous ‘57 Chevy. One of the favorites at The Dairy Bar are the “Dixie Whopper” plate - a gigantic doubledecker burger with special sauce, fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw is made fresh daily, and hand scooped into the special containers by The Dairy Bar waitresses. Everything is made from scratch and the ground chuck is bought daily from a local butcher. Nothing is the prepackaged frozen stuff. In the fall and winter, make sure to indulge in a bowl of the freshly homemade soups! Mmmmmm!!! Friday nights are hopping with their fried catfish and codfish with fries, coleslaw and homemade hushpuppies. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert or just come in and have a homemade milkshake or their delicious hot fudge cake which is also made fresh every day. This is a luscious chocolate dessert oozing

with hot fudge with moist devil’s food cake. Customer loyalty at The Dairy Bar is not hard to find and the ladies who work there love serving their clients and getting to know them. Many of the ladies have been there for decades! It is not unusual for two or three generations to have worked at the restaurant. These ladies know their clients and for the many folks that come to visit, the ladies make them feel extra welcome as they get to know them. In fact there are several clients that come in and the waitress knows exactly where they are going to sit and have their drink already poured, before they sit down. One patron comes in to eat at The Dairy Bar six days a week, all year round. Many come back year after year with their children and for most this is one of the highlights of the trip. Many sports teams, family reunions, and church groups make The Dairy Bar a destination or utilize the diner for their special event or the main place to have their meals. They are open for breakfast starting at 8:00 AM and close at 10:00 PM (EST) Monday through Saturday. This is a perfect day trip destination during the spring, fall or summer. Make sure to take a drive to the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, enjoy a train ride and explore some of the mining camps, delight in the gorgeous scenery along the way and stop by The Dairy Bar and experience the delicious food, southern hospitality and the memories of yesteryear. The Dairy Bar can be reached by phoning, 606-376-2124. Bon Appétit!

Spotlight on Monterey Conveniently located off of I-40 Exit 300 & 301, Monterey, TN is “the place where all trails lead to, go through or begin” with the new “Rails With Trails” hiking/biking trail that will have 19 miles of trails when completed. The first portion begins in Monterey and will parallel the railroad and Old Walton Road. The Tennessee Central Railway Heritage Trail will travel a course between the Monterey Depot Museum and the Cookeville Depot. Twice a year, the Tennessee Central Railway Museum brings an excursion train to Monterey from Nashville. The first is during “Spring on the Mountain” the first Saturday in May. The second is on Standing Stone Day (always the second Saturday in October) - a celebration that revolves around a huge rock monolith of great significance to the local indigenous people. Heritage is a point of pride for Monterey. Along with the “Rails with Trails” trail and local event, they have also actively developed the Monterey Quilt Trail with blocks in the downtown and surrounding area. Monterey (founded in 1893) has long been referred to as “King of the Mountain”. The coal and lumber industry of the day brought train travel and lots of people to the area creating a bustling hub in the “Standing Stone Community” – later named Monterey. Before the days of the automobile, Monterey’s cooler temperatures (on the mountain) and peacefulness made it a resort town. Today, Monterey boasts a flurry of activity both in the vibrant downtown area and the many events and trails. The Monterey merchants and dedicated citizens are keeping the downtown main street area full of life. Two such people, Kay and Bill Wiggins have lovingly restored the old Bower buildings (circa 1924). BenAnna’s is named after their grandchildren, Ben and Anna. They serve lunch Wednesdays and Saturdays and the best hand dipped ice cream shakes east of the Mississippi. Kay’s dream was to open a comfortable gathering place with light lunches, delicious sandwiches, chili, homemade soups, baked goods and hand dipped Mayfield ice cream. The store has a wide variety of gifts, including collectibles, antique furniture, Gund baby items, jewelry and a consignment corner with kids clothing, original paintings, and more. Next door, Bill has turned his love of trains into his golden years’ recreation — displaying his personal train collection that bring kids (big and small) into the store to admire his work. Asher’s Spare Time Hobby and Bicycle Shop (also named for a grandson) is Bill’s “other” hobby. He stocks “S gauge” model trains

and is an authorized Schwinn bicycle dealer. The store stocks, services and has many accessories for the bike enthusiast offering quality and service not often found in our modern times. The back entrance of the store leads directly to the trailhead of the new “Rails to Trails” trail. It also serves as the heart of the bike race in October - a 72 mile circuit scenic course for the diehard bike racer. Come to BenAnna’s and Asher’s. Grab a bite to eat and browse this treasure. Living the Dream Living the Dream has a sprawling 6,600 square feet of living space with a high-tech media room complete with big screen TV, card table, Wii for fitness and fun, plus Wi-Fi for computer internet hook-up. There is a beauty salon and barber shop on site and laundry facilities for the residents to use. For security, there will be one main entrance and for safety the facility is equipped with a sprinkler system. Living the Dream offers a commercial kitchen that provides all the meals and snacks for the residents. The open, spacious dining area will host many themed events, holiday celebrations, and offers a delightful ambience for good food and breaking bread together. The activity calendar will be the heartbeat of Living the Dream with planned activities on site and occasionally off-site enjoying the beautiful Upper Cumberland area. The planned gardens and vegetable gardens will be lovely for sitting outside and enjoying the sights, smells, and sounds of the seasons. Phase III will put an atrium over the gardens and a flowing fountain that will make this sitting area relaxing for social interaction with residents and guests that will visit Living the Dream. Living the Dream will allow something for everyone to enjoy, whether nature, gardening, socializing, walking, or just enjoying country living. Ms. Askins has a twinkle in her eye when she talks about her childhood growing up on their Clay County farm. It was some of the happiest times of her life and where she developed her love of horses and nature. She is so happy to be living in the country again and being able to offer this to seniors. Living the Dream is an independent assisted living facility; however, services such as Choices, Option or other licensed agencies offering homemaker, personal assistance, and therapeutic services are available. Living the Dream also offers respite care, if space is available, for those caring for a loved one. Living the Dream is a first of its kind in Tennessee. As you drive up the winding driveway lined with the white picket fence and Bradford Pears and see the beautiful stucco façade with the ornate wrought iron front entrance, and the geese in the pond, you know that you are home. Come visit Living the Dream and give yourself or a loved one a graceful place — a loving place in the country (only minutes from Cookeville and the hospital) to age gracefully and to live independently.

Something new is available in Cookeville, Tennessee (the heart of the Upper Cumberland). Living the Dream is an elegant independent assisted living home for seniors. This is a dream come true for Ms. Wendy Askins, Executive Director of the Upper Cumberland Development District. For fifteen years, she had a vision and passion to build a beautiful home for middle income people that needed a place to live in a gracious environment. Ms. Askins has become no stranger to serving people during her 30 plus year career in the Upper Cumberland. She is a tireless, hard working people person with a passion for helping and serving others, which is evidenced through the work she has done over the years. Through the Upper Cumberland Development District, she has helped to obtain infrastructure for the 14 counties that she serves, providing low income housing, funding for the relative caregiver program and services for seniors, historical preservation and so much more. Living the Dream has been a dream of fulfilling a need that has been obvious to Ms. Askins for years. That dream has now come to fruition in late 2010 with the purchase of a beautiful villa surrounded by 11 acres of lush pastures that were auctioned earlier in the year. This beautiful stucco façade home allows residents to age gracefully and live independently in a loving home environment with country living. Currently, there are three residents who love living in the noninstitutional style home which allows them the freedom to walk outside and enjoy nature and the loving touches that Ms. Askins and her team have created. Phase II will be completed in spring 2011 and will offer 20 units. 16 of those units will be one bedroom units with full ADA approved bathrooms, bedrooms and a small sitting area with Dish Network. Each unit will have its own heating and cooling controls to customize comfort. There will also be 4 units designed for couples that want a little more space and desire to live together. Living the Dream’s country living allows for the ability to enjoy nature. The lovely 50’ x 100’ barn that houses horses, barn cats, dogs, baby goats and miniature horse for the residents to enjoy and care for if they enjoy animals will add to the experience. Ms. Askins has put her heart and soul into this project, working day and night to oversee the renovations. She is so passionate about this project and has such a keen desire to make sure every detail is as it should be that she has temporarily given up her own home in Cookeville to live on-site. This has allowed her to be there during every step of the project — making sure that her residents are cared for. Her determined personality and professional loving team will make this the best home for seniors. Ms. Askins credits God for letting her know that this was the home and the time to get this project moving forward as many baby boomers are or will be needing affordable housing in the near future.

Big South Fork Hiking Trails The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BSFNRRA) has a bounty of hiking trails with varying degrees of intensity. The Burckhard family has been blessed to have walked many a trail in the park and some of our favorites continue to be Twin Arches, Angel Falls Overlook and visiting the interesting and historic Blue Heron and Barthell Coal Mining Camps. Twin Arches is a great example of the geological wonders that have been formed over centuries. It is also one of the most visited features in the Big South Fork. Dramatic cliffs, arches, rock shelters, chimneys and other interesting formations are carved into the sandstone of the plateau, offering visitors superb outdoor recreation opportunities. BSFNRRA has been a national park since 1974, after it caught the attention of Congress in the early 70’s. It allows families, outdoor adventurists and groups a variety of activities that are low or no cost. The Burckhard family loves to camp at the Bandy Creek Campground area or rent one of the luxury cabins that are offered surrounding the park. It’s the perfect place to hang out for a day, weekend or week and enjoy the trails either by foot, by horse or by mountain bike. Another favorite hike is the Angel Falls Overlook which one can pick up at the Leatherwood Ford Trailhead. It meanders along the river and leads up to a majestic bluff overlook, 1,000 feet above the rambling river. This is an ideal hike in the winter, when many of us have cabin fever. A crisp, clear winter day is just right to hike the hard, solid trails, while patches of ice rest on the river and beautiful mountain vistas. It’s also a stunning destination in the fall, especially when the colors are at their peak – acres and acres of patchwork beauty created by The Creator for

our viewing pleasure. Our family loves sitting atop the Angel Falls Overlook’s gigantic rock bluff with our picnic lunch in hand. This is a wonderful day outing with friends and family. For several years, our church family has taken a camping/hiking trip to this exact spot. We have had many days of fun exploring the wild and enjoying the outdoors. When you come, don’t forget to hike down to Charit Creek Lodge and this amazing area for a peek at the authentic log cabin structures that are used as a hostel by many outdoor adventurers. This is a great hike by foot or horseback, and Cowboy Larry McMillan from Southeast Pack Trips leads many a group down to this popular area. Another favorite in the area is Pickett State Park, just down the road from the Leatherwood Ford Trailhead. Pickett State Park has some amazing hikes, plus some interesting history about how it was built. This has been depicted in the new CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Museum and Interpretive Exhibit at the entrance to the park. The Blue Heron and Barthell Coal Mining Camps are also wonderful spots to visit. This area too is rich in local history with many fascinating stories. Step back in time to see where things were just a few short years ago in this rural Appalachian area. The Big South Fork Scenic Railway has regular train departures through the gorge April – October. For more information about the hikes in the BSFNRRA and Pickett State Park, visit the park websites below or give them a call. For those that aren’t able to hike or enjoy the trails as easily as others or just don’t have the time to immerse yourself in the full experience – the roads through the parks offer some pretty spectacular views by bike or by automobile. Remember – leave no trace. Pack out everything you pack in. The parks belong to all of us. Happy Trails! Annie’s Travels & Treasures Southeast Pack Trips is the place to call if you want a real cowboy experience. Larry McMillan or known around the region as “Cowboy Larry” loves to make your ride a most memorable ride. Whether you are a novice or an experienced rider, he will make your trip to the Big South Fork on horseback one to remember. Cowboy Larry has been organizing two hour, half day and day horseback trips for over 30 years now and knows every inch of the trails, from easy to difficult and is a true cowboy made of grit. Larry knows the rugged terrain and fell in love with the land over thirty years ago and knew that these great outdoors would keep him and his riders/guests satisfied forever with the endless trails. My son Grant loves Cowboy Larry and considers him one of his best friends, even though there is about fifty years in age difference. Southeast Pack Trips is conveniently located off of Hwy. 297 and has gentle horses with all type of riding capabilities. Call ahead and reserve your spot as rides fill up quickly, especially in the fall, when the majestic colors of the Big South Fork are plentiful. Crisp, fresh fall air on horseback is the best, with a lunch packed in your saddle bag and meandering through the lovely trails, up and down hills, across rivers and creeks and standing proudly at the bluff views. Southeast Pack Trips also offers organized rides to Charit Creek Lodge - an authentic log cabin built in 1838 by a true pioneer (a long hunter); where you can rough it, overnight in the bunkhouses or bring your tent and do some camping by the creek. The buildings are on the National Historic Register and are the oldest buildings still being utilized nationwide inside the park system. You can have a pioneer experience by cooking your own meals over the campfire or have an organized home cooked meal or a special custom campfire meal designed around your budget. You can ride, hike or go with Cowboy Larry from his barn on a guided ride to reach Charit Creek Lodge, where you will have access to over 300 miles of trails. Out here, you can experience the peacefulness of the BSF. There’s no electricity; just the sounds of the creek that runs nearby, and the abundant wildlife all around. Imagine waking up to deer in the field, turkey, squirrels, chipmunks and tons of indigenous birds and the occasional curious black bear scurrying around. Charit Creek Lodge takes you back to the 19th century with its rustic cabin and bunkhouse for the outdoors adventurers. Cowboy Larry loves to ride and to show off the Big South Fork Park. He can cater to your skill, your budget and to your needs. “Annie” had a girl’s weekend last summer and organized a four hour ride for the ladies. There were varied levels of riding experience, but fun was had by all! Cowboy Larry is the real “cowboy” and caters to families, groups of adventurous friends, including children. Tell Larry that Annie and Grant sent you! Grey Gables Bed and Breakfast is my favorite bed and breakfast in the Big South Fork region. It is owned and operated by innkeeper, Linda Brooks Jones. Linda and her family have owned and operated Grey Gables for over 21 years and have been able to build up quite the loyal following due the beautiful Victorian setting, extremely gracious hospitality and their scrumptious breakfast included with your overnight stay. For those with the time to listen to a story of two, Linda gladly shares her wisdom with her guests. She is a gracious lady, who genuinely enjoys serving her guests, her community and her family. Linda and her late husband, Bill were high-school sweethearts. They knew they always wanted to come back home to Rugby. Decades ago, they left St. Louis, Missouri to follow their dream of serving wonderful meals in a comfortable setting. Nestled on the outskirts of the Historic Victorian Village of Rugby, and bordering the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, Grey Gables offers comfortable lodging with delicious meals and a wonderful atmosphere. The Inn offers twenty-two rooms which are furnished with Victorian and Country antiques - each room is very unique with its own personality. Many of the antiques and collectibles are from their family or the village while others are from the original Rugby settlers. Rugby has a wonderful history all its own. It was founded in 1880 by Social Reformer Thomas Hughes, who brought sons of the English gentry to seek their destiny. His social experiment would be a utopian dream but was challenged from the beginning. Though the original community never had more than 100 families, most from Europe, the social experiment failed due to the railroad not coming to the area as planned, the harsh winters and the gentry not willing to work. However, the historic village of Rugby is still very much alive today and has a certain spirit and culture. Folks who live in Rugby are searching for more out of life than the cookie cutter lifestyle of suburbia. They want a slow paced, meaningful life. Linda has cooked for thousands of families and dignitaries (including former President Jimmy Carter and his wife), catered special events, and has featured many of her favorite recipes in her first cookbook called, “The Table at Grey Gables.” The book isn’t just a cookbook with recipes for some of her 28

favorite meals, desserts, appetizers, soups and vegetables, but it also shares a good bit of the rich history and culture. One of “Annie’s” favorites is the “Zesty Tomato Soup” served with the “Rich Butter Horn Rolls.” She has recently published a second cookbook – “A Full Table at Grey Gables”. These cookbooks can be purchased by visiting Grey Gables, by phoning Linda, or ordering information can be obtained online. Grey Gables also features special themed teas throughout the year. Just give them a call for the latest schedule. If you are looking for a great weekend getaway, call Linda to reserve your room and get ready to be spoiled. Linda and her daughter, Tiffany, and granddaughter, Kelly will pamper you with a delightful experience. It’s a great gift idea as well! Grey Gables Bed and Breakfast can be visited on line at www.rugbytn.com or give them a call at 423-628-5252. Enjoy your stay! The Garden Grill & Custom Catering is a must to enjoy while visiting the Big South Fork region. It is family owned by Chris and Heather Harvey, lifelong residents of Jamestown, TN. Operating The Garden Grill since January 2011, they have made it into a warm, homey restaurant with good, down home cooking. The decorations have a comfortable home décor with rich painted walls and tasteful furnishings with lovely stenciled sayings throughout the restaurant. With a successful background in catering, Chris has been able to turn his love and passion for cooking (his hobby) into a business where the family all participates. Chris has learned his cooking by watching some of his favorite people and family members cook. He feels like this is one of his many talents. Chris combines his love of cooking with his full-time professional job as an RN at the local hospital; so wife, Heather and children welcome guests and manages the place when he is not there. They have a wonderful hot bar and salad bar served during the lunch hour with home cooked specialties. You might find homemade slow cooked roast, chicken, and ham or on Friday evenings - a delectable seafood buffet. The seafood buffet features a variety of seafood. You will likely find some of Chris’ favorites such as the delicious hand-breaded catfish, baked fish, shrimp, scallops, crab, clam strips or stuffed crab. Their regular patrons love their homemade cornbread fritters that look like pancakes. These are delicious with pinto beans and turnips or just as a side with your meal or salad. Annie loves their homemade tuna or chicken salad, with red grapes, celery, and onion that goes well on top of your salad. Their daughter, Kendall serves their guests and makes sure that everyone is greeted with a smile and that service is given with the courteous hospitality the south is known for. The Garden Grill has wonderful DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC

Annie’s Travels & Treasures homemade desserts such as pies, cakes and a variety of cheesecakes. There is plenty of room in the purpose built gathering place for a family reunion, wedding reception, rehearsal dinner or private meeting or function, to accommodate a large group. Heather loves the restaurant business and has a passion for serving her guests and making them feel welcome. One of Heather’s favorites is the grilled chicken penne, a generous helping of penne, with grilled chicken and a creamy garlic sauce. Another pleaser is the steak griller, their version of an 8 ounce rib eye steak sandwich. This monster is served with grilled onions, mushrooms and topped with melted Monterey jack cheese on sourdough bread. The Garden Grill is open six days a week, closed on Sundays. They open at 11:00 AM and close at 8:00 PM, Monday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday are open until 9:00 PM. Come to The Garden Grill after you get done with your horseback ride, hike, or pull that kayak out of the water. Make a special day trip up to the Big South Fork and explore the winding roads, shop at some of the neat antique and gift shops along the way and have a delicious meal at The Garden Grill. They can be reached at 931-879-2344. Bon Appétit! Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins is the newest RV destination and cabin rentals in the area. It is owned and operated by Michiganders Klaas and Betty DeJong. They consider that they have come full circle in their journey in life. Each of them worked at a campground before they were married and always thought that they would like to run one during their retirement years. You know that saying, be careful what you wish for? Klaas and Betty started looking casually a few years ago and always knew that they wanted to be somewhere in the southeast; preferably Tennessee. After a big search, they found the perfect place. It didn’t take long to decide that Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins needed some tender loving care and they took the plunge and bought their retirement dream. Although Klaas is still working out his last year at Caterpillar in Grand Rapids, Michigan and tying up loose ends. He will officially be retired in January and comes down as often as he can. Betty is here full time enjoying the many visitors. She recently participated in the popular, world’s longest yard sale – the Hwy. 127 Corridor Sale. It was a huge success. This was Klaas and Betty’s first time hosting the Hwy. 127 sale at their campground. It was so busy; it took many family members and friends from Michigan that came down to help. This was a very exciting event and although everyone worked really hard and were exhausted, they loved it. They can’t wait to come again in 2012 to help and visit again with many of the Toll Free 877-864-8666 / www.Go2BSF.com

vendors that already reserved their spot for the 2012 Hwy. 127 Sale. There were over thirty vendor sites and the covered pavilion was hopping with vendors selling everything from handcrafted items, widgets and other sundry items. The pavilion’s adjoining kitchen was open daily from 6:00 AM serving the vendors and flock of visitor’s homemade breakfast, lunch and dinner. One of the busiest vendors was serving up kettle corn, boiled peanuts and Italian ice. Another of the most unique food vendors was a lady who was serving organic banana whips - perfect on a hot summer day. There were tour buses that made the journey from Dunlap, TN along Hwy. 127. They pulled into Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins and enjoyed the many vendors, the food and the hospitality. Maple Hill RV Park is open year round and offers 19 RV Sites, 9 pull through and 10 back in sites. They offer 4 private bathrooms with shower, a community kitchen and laundry area, plus clean and new facilities. They also have 4 rustic cabins with heat/air and 1 fully furnished cabin that has recently been remodeled and furnished with new linens, kitchen items - very cozy. The front porch area is perfect for enjoying a book, or rocking in a chair and enjoying the beautiful nature that surrounds the RV Park. In fact, Klaas and Betty’s daughter-in-law is a professional photographer and has captured many captivating scenes in the spring and the week of the sale. She has turned several of the shots into framed prints that can be viewed at Klaas and Betty’s office. Maple RV Park and Cabins can be visited online www.maplehillrv.com or by phone 931-879-3025.
