Meet the Lake!

Straddling both Georgia and North Carolina, Lake Chatuge blazes with fall color along its 132 miles of shoreline. For the best views, consider a fall lake cruise through The Ridges Resort & Marina (706-896-2262). Or, saunter along the 1.2 mile loop trail along the lakeshore. From the Visitors Center, head east on Hwy. 76 to the traffic light at Hwy. 288 and turn right. Go 1 mile and turn left into the Lake Chatuge Recreation Area. Park in the boat ramp area; the trailhead is to the right of the boat ramp.

Other area falls include:

• Anna Ruby Falls (via .4-mile trail) • Horse Trough Falls (via .4-mile trail) • Raven Cliff Falls (via 2.5-mile trail) • Dukes Creek Falls (via .8-mile trail)

Fabulous Falls

From roaring waterfalls to gurgling cascades, you’ll find some of the best falls in the U.S. here. You can reach High Shoals Falls — a rushing succession of five waterfalls with a total vertical drop of 300 feet — via the High Shoals Trail, which follows along High Shoals Creek to the observation decks. To get there, take Hwy. 76 east through Hiawassee and turn right onto GA 75 south toward Helen. Past the turn for Brasstown Bald, look on your left for the High Shoals sign. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 283. Go 1.5 miles to the High Shoals Scenic Area for parking.

alk about serendipity. It turns out that North Georgia’s rolling pasture land also makes the perfect vineyard. The pastures are gently sloped; they’ve been naturally fertilized for years; and they’ve been regularly limed. The result is the rich, alkaline soil that wine grapes love. Add in a mountain microclimate that combines warm, dry summer days with cool mountain nights, and you have all the ingredients for premium regional wines.

These days, it’s American and European wine grapes — not scuppernong — that are harvested at the more than 30 bonded wineries at the heart of Georgia’s Wine Country, which stretches from Savannah to Young Harris to Dahlonega.

Sip and savor at this charming family winery!

W

ith some 3,500 vines of Merlot, Vignoles and Pinot Grigio spread across its 6 acres, Hightower Creek Vineyards is the classic small farm winery. At an elevation of 2,200 feet, it’s also the highest vineyard in the state. Perhaps it’s all that cool mountain air that has helped this family winery create such captivating wines. Longtime residents Sanford and Liz Green planted their first vines in 2009. They added a tasting room in June of this year, opening Liz and Sanford Green their doors to an appreciative public. In a renovated urge guests to pair their farmhouse, guests can sample everything from wine with good food and an off-dry Vidal Blanc better company! to the winery’s big, bold Bordeaux blend named Deliverance (yes, after the movie that was filmed nearby!) In the cellar, son Travis carefully crafts premium dry and off-dry wines that capture the essence of North Georgia’s unique climate and soil. Rounding out the family effort, daughter Heather handles publicity, including promoting the winery’s popular Tasting room hours: “After Hours” series on the second and fourth Saturdays Mon. - Sat. 12 - 6 p.m. of the month. Here, guests enjoy live entertainment, light fare and a glass of wine for only $15. Hightower Creek Sun. 12:30 - 5 p.m. Vineyards is located 10 miles east of Hiawassee along (Closed Tues.) Georgia’s “Wine Highway.” Coupon page 25

Tasting Notes Chatuga White — An easy-drinking, refreshingly off-dry white that pours a deep lemon hue with notes of apple, pear and green plum. Trillium — The 2010 vintage of this signature white blend is incredibly soft and floral, with notes of olive, honeysuckle and almond. Red Clay Rosé — A laid back, refreshingly off-dry rosé with notes of strawberry, grapefruit and watermelon. Cynthiana — A big and juicy red with plum, black cherry and tobacco on the nose and soft berries on the palate. Deliverance — A bold red with big tannins and aromas of red berries and cedar. Chatuga Red — A seriously delicious off-dry red, this easy drinking blend offers a refreshing acidity and notes of plum, blueberries and cherry.

Spotlight on: Mountain Real Estate Towns County, GA and Clay County, NC by Faron Winslow King, Vice President, Coldwell Banker High Country Realty

Y

ou know the old saying, “Big things come in small packages”? Well, that’s certainly true of Towns County, Georgia, and Clay County, North Carolina. Both counties are among the very smallest in their respective states, but they more than make up for their size with what they have to offer! The focal point of the two counties is beautiful Lake Chatuge, which is shared by both counties and provides the perfect backdrop for everything from summer recreation to the most amazing setting for a mountain home. Our region is rich with heritage and we’re very proud of what that heritage means to us! Although I have been blessed to live in God’s country my entire life, I never tire of the beauty that greets us each and every day. With four distinct seasons and an abundance of forest service property surrounding us, we have the most amazing and dramatic views you can imagine. Recreational opportunities abound with hiking, mountain biking and water sports. Waterfalls, wineries and Georgia’s highest point, Brasstown Bald, are just a few more destinations that make our area unique and sought after. As we have evolved over the years from a weekend and summer destination with the addition of wonderful restaurants and cultural offerings from music to plays, those who have homes here have gravitated toward spending more time at their mountain homes or made the move to full-time residency. A tagline from a previous tourism ad for the area says it best: “You’ll come to visit … and never want to leave.”

Did you Know? Young Harris is known in Georgia’s political circles as the lifelong home of U.S. Senator Zell Miller, who taught history and political science at close-knit Young Harris College (enrollment 1,100) prior to and after serving two terms as the state’s popular governor.

Discover Hayesville Just across the line, North Carolina’s sleepy little secret is waiting for you!

W

ith its quaint towns and stunning natural beauty, Clay County has been called “the best kept secret in North Carolina.”

Explore!

Occupying the site of the former Cherokee town of Quanassee, Hayesville was incorporated in 1913 as the county seat. Hayesville combines

small-town charm with the beauty of the surrounding mountains, lakes, rivers and streams. The quaint town square seems custom-made for shopping (antiques and handcrafted items are big) or just strolling around. Of course, the focal point is the historic courthouse, a beautiful landmark built in 1888 that is on the national register

of historic places. Another slice of history is The People’s Store (68 Church Street), a general store in operation since 1946 and now open as a small museum. Hayesville is also home to The Peacock Playhouse as well as the local theatrical group, The Licklog Players. Whether you enjoy your pursuits active (plenty of hiking, biking, fishing and boating) or just plain laid back, you’ll enjoy this charming community and its warm-and-friendly people.

Here to Help Helpful volunteers and loads of area information are waiting for you at the Clay County Chamber of Commerce. The modern chamber offices are located in Hayesville at the four points intersection, just beyond the traffic round-about at the intersection of US 64 Business and North Carolina State Road 69. Or, call 877-389-3704 for more information.

Everything You Need to Know! What exactly is “punkin chunkin,” you ask? Basically, it’s a competition involving various medieval and modern contraptions throwing pumpkins thousands of feet through the air! (Purists know these marvels of engineering as trebuchets and catapults.) This year’s event is a two-day affair where you can load up on festival food, visit craft vendors and dance to live music in an outdoor arena. There will be an “Anything Pumpkin” cook-off, a chili cook-off, and plenty of games and activities. And, of course … lots of flying pumpkins!
