Welcome to the 2012 edition of the Dale Hollow Lake Visitors’ Guide! It’s my pleasure to play a small role in bringing this year’s Guide to you. Tourism in alive and well in the Middle Tennessee and South Central Kentucky regions. While many industries have shown declines in recent years, tourism continues to hold strong – and that is more than true around Dale Hollow Lake. The people I’ve talked with while putting this Guide together have a positive outlook for 2012, and I certainly hope that proves to be the case. All signs seem to be pointing in that direction as far as recreation/ tourism is concerned. The 2012 Dale Hollow Lake Visitors’ Guide remains a key resource for visitors to our region. It is chock full of information to help visitors have an even better experience and none of it would be possible without the advertising support you’ll see in these pages. I encourage everyone to show your support to these key businesses, as they work hard to showcase the Dale Hollow area in the best possible manner. While serving visitors remains the prime focus of this publication, it also provides vital information to locals as well. Many area professionals keep this Guide handy throughout the year as a reference point for Dale Hollow Lake background information, as well as a reminder of what local businesses have to offer visitors and area residents alike. I look forward to this and many more editions of the Dale Hollow Lake Visitors’ Guide. I have some plans for improvements and additions in the works and I can’t wait to share those with everyone soon. In the meantime, much thanks goes to Andrea and Terry Burckhard, Janice Neal and Janet Hopson for the extraordinary work they’ve all put into this publication over the years. They have created a masterful asset for the region, and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to take the reins from here. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have suggestions about the Guide or questions about anything. I’m here to help in any way possible. Thank you to the visitors for coming to our wonderful region and thank you again to the advertisers and story contributors for making this guide possible. It is truly amazing that we have been producing these guides for almost a decade now, but boy has the Burckhard family had fun. We have learned first hand why generations of so many families have been coming to Dale Hollow Lake to escape, unwind and enjoy the pristine waters that offer abundant recreation with awesome boating, jet skiing and the best swimming in clear, clean waters. Many folks that moved away in the 50’s and 60’s to work in the north are coming back home to their beloved roots around the lake to retire. Terry and I are also entering this phase of our journey and have been seeking a successor for these beloved guides which offer the loyal visitors and those discovering Dale Hollow Lake’s off-the-beaten track stories, things to do and lake information to enjoy while visiting or planning a visit. We proudly announce that we have found the perfect person, Jay Albrecht. Jay is taking our “baby” and will be steering the boat so to speak, from now on. Jay is no stranger to the publishing and media world. He grew up producing and setting newspapers in his family business. Jay is very excited. Terry and I have been so blessed to meet so many awesome people - the business owners around the lake, vacationers, and residents while traveling around the lake and attending many events (and will continue to do so). “Annie” hopes to contribute some stories in “Annie’s Travels and Treasures” occasionally and hopes to see many of you out and about. This next phase allows Terry to be semi-retired and allows “Annie” the chance to spend more time with her family while continuing to build her full time profession with New York Life Insurance Company. We thank all of our advertisers and friends around the lake, but most of all - our readers for your support over the last decade. It has been an incredible journey and one that Grant and Blake (our twin sons) have definitely benefited from. They love Dale Hollow Lake and call this their home lake. Now some news! The Byrdstown Pickett County Welcome Center is open to serve you. The first official welcome center coming from the north, located on Hwy. 111 is a showcase with tourist information, visitor guides and a community room to welcome you. Downtown Celina continues to flourish with their antique stores and shops around the square. One of my favorites, the Wholesale Depot has discounted name brand make-up, designer shoes at a fraction of the cost and name brand tools and equipment. Paula and Brian have moved in from the east to escape the rat race and have opened up a much needed store that folks from all over the region are flocking to. Livingston/Overton County continues to boom. Their recent “Christmas in the Country” got even the Scrooges smiling and joyful about Christmas. Decorated light post, a beautiful tree, Christmas music and hot chocolate on the square set such a picturesque scene. The merchants were happy to stay open longer to accommodate the holiday shoppers. I love this small town celebration and am so thankful to live in this great region. Many memories, down-home values and families coming together to celebrate the season. There is much more inside this issue, so open read on and enjoy! We wish Jay Albrecht and all of you some awesome Dale Hollow Lake memories this year!

Dale Hollow Lake History Dale Hollow Lake was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938 and the River and Harbor Act of 1946. The project was actually completed in 1943 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with the damming of the Obey River. The lake lies mainly in northern Tennessee, covering parts of Clay, Overton and Pickett counties. Arms of the lake also extend into south central Kentucky, affecting Cumberland and Clinton counties. In all, the lake consists of 27,700 acres of water and nearly 25,000 acres of surrounding land. The lake’s namesake was William Dale, a government surveyor and veteran of the War of 1812. Dale settled in Willow Grove, Tenn., which later became known as the Dale Hollow plantation as it expanded. When the dam was installed in 1942, Willow Grove and the plantation became widely known as “the town that drowned” as water overtook the area.
Today, Dale Hollow Lake is often referred to as one of the prettiest lakes in the East. Its clear water and beautiful scenery are unmatched. About three million visitors per year enjoy Dale Hollow Lake for everything from fishing and boating to water skiing and jet skiing. The lake was recently voted by USA Today as the No. 4 lake in the nation to “float your boat.” The lake also holds the distinction as one of the nation’s best places for smallmouth bass fishing. Currently, the largest smallmouth bass ever recorded, at 11 lb., 15 oz.) was caught at Dale Hollow. Other species of fish common to the lake are largemouth bass, crappie, muskellunge, walleye, catfish, gar and trout. The Dale Hollow Lake dam provides hydroelectric energy to surrounding areas. The lake offers more than a dozen fullservice marinas to serve visitors’ needs.

Sunset Marina & Resort is a full service marina conveniently located just off of Hwy. 111 near Byrdstown, TN (beneath the bridge). They offer quick and convenient access to the water with lodging, water craft rentals and a (seasonal) floating restaurant with a superb view of the DHL sunsets. Some of you may remember J & B Stuff and owners, Bonnie and Jack, from their previous location in the Big South Fork area in Clarkrange, TN. The Beseckers decided they wanted to enjoy their new lake home more, so they moved the store north to the Byrdstown area. They are still nearby. The beautiful and well arranged new store has all sorts of glassware
(bowls, cookie jars, pitchers, cups, saucers, etc.), beautiful furniture (and refinished pieces), jewelry, knives, lamps, pottery, books, baskets, music stands, vintage tools, wind chimes, linens, crockery, toys, things for your garden, primitive décor, home décor signs and so much more. Call before you make the drive. Hours of operation vary. You can reach them at 931864-5225 or 931-704-0178. The Farmhouse Restaurant (open year round) is another delightful place to dine just a little farther north of J & B Stuff on Hwy. 111. The Farmhouse is known for their all you can eat hotbar and Friday night Catfish Special. Owners, Steve, Retta and Graceann Reagan strive to offer diners great food at affordable prices. During the growing season, they offer plenty of fresh local produce – often from their own farm. If you are looking for some superb molasses, try theirs. They’re the best! As long as the crop lasts, you can purchase a quart or more to take home for more delectable dining. The Reagans are also working to offer special Saturday events once a month from April through October. They would also like the opportunity to discuss catering your event or private party and have a banquet room if you would like to plan your event for the restaurant. Give them a call at 931-864-4070 for the latest specials and events.

The Smallmouth Guru By Stephen Headrick, The Smallmouth Guru Every now and then, I get questioned about finding and catching a giant smallmouth. Some guys don’t care about numbers. They’ll fish for days looking for that one big bite that will put a big 5- or 6-pound bronze back on their wall and give them pictures to e-mail to their friends. And if this is you, then Dale Hollow Lake is the lake for you! Let’s look at some statistics: 5 of the top 7 smallmouth bass ever caught came from this lake. Furthermore, 13 of the top 25 have come from Dale Hollow Lake. So this is definitely the lake to catch such a fish! If you’re lucky, you might even get into the record book yourself. One place that most big fishermen know to look is humps, or sunken islands, out in open
water. The best humps and islands are near channel breaks and around the deepest water in the lake 2 to 20 feet is all the same, the big fish aren’t there. Most big fish are lazy and they don’t like burning energy. One of my favorite baits for catching big smallmouth is Float and Fly because it’s more normal to a fish in the water compared to a lot of others in the water, especially when water is below 55 degrees. The other thing is a jig that’s more realistic then lots of other baits. Going out and spending 2 or 3 days fishing for big fish requires patience - most people talk about it but can’t do it. So good luck and go fishing! P.S.: Most fishermen who go fishing say they are going to catch fish but is that what they are really looking for?

Dale Hollow Lake Welcome Center
The Dale Hollow Lake Welcome Center immediately after construction and before being inhabited by the Byrdstown-Pickett County Chamber of Commerce.
By Jay Albrecht Albrecht Publishing Group After 10 years in the making, Pickett County finally can “welcome” its visitors in proper style with the opening of the Dale Hollow Lake Welcome Center at the intersection of Highway 111 and State Route 325 (West Main Street) in Byrdstown. The Welcome Center will also house the Byrdstown - Pickett County Chamber of Commerce and the Borderlands Foundation Museum, which focuses primarily on the Civil War heritage of the area. According to Will Robbins, executive director of the Byrdstown - Pickett County Chamber of Commerce, Dale Hollow Lake is the primary reason for the new facility. “About 8,300 cars per day pass by this intersection,” said Robbins. “We wanted more visibility, and our former facility was more difficult for visitors to find.” Robbins also said of the three million visitors to Dale Hollow Lake each year, about one-third of those pass through Pickett County. “We can’t ignore the benefits of the lake,” said Robbins, who said the facility will highlight many of the recreational aspects offered by the area, including the lake. Robbins pointed out the world-record smallmouth bass was caught at Dale Hollow Lake. Ten years ago, local officials began meeting to plan the new facility. In April 2011, the final stamp of approval was given. “We’re hoping that this will be a big draw to tourists,” said Lana Rossi, a member of the Pickett County Commissioner’s Court and a Chamber board member. The new facility sits on 12 acres of land and is just over 3,000 square feet in size. Of the $400,000 construction cost, 80 percent was funded through the federal Transportation Enhancement Agency program. Robbins said the local farmers’ market will also locate on the property. The facility also contains public restrooms, for travelers needing a break. Over the longer term, Robbins said local citizens want to construct a living history village on the property. What is believed to be the oldest residence in the county, constructed about 1830, already sits on this land and other buildings can be moved to the site to help fulfill this dream. When completed, 20

the goal will be to portray a 19th-century Reconstruction era homestead. According to Robbins, this was also the vision of the former property owner, who donated the property for this cause. Robbins said the logging industry, long a stalwart of the Pickett County community and dating back to the late 1800s, will also be featured in exhibits within the new facility. “In my eyes, we’ve created a centrally located community space,” said Robbins. “We have numerous activities for different interests. The educational mission will grow significantly with this facility.” The Borderlands exhibit features photos of civil war veterans, civil way era maps, various prints and paintings and even a piece of firewood riddled with cannon shot. Robbins said the Pickett County area experienced a very different view of the war than did west and middle Tennessee – so the exhibit is definitely worth exploring. In recent years, the Borderlands museum has hosted over 800 children on field trips and Robbins hopes that continues to grow. The Chamber currently has nearly 90 members and serves the economic development needs of Pickett County, including a significant portion of Dale Hollow Lake. Robbins and Rossi said numerous volunteers have contributed to the effort and the project could not have succeeded without their help. The Chamber hoped to have its official grand opening in Spring 2012, but the physical move was already underway by the turn of the year. The mission of the Byrdstown – Pickett County Chamber of Commerce is to promote and enhance the quality of life for its citizens, promote commerce, promote tourism and retirement, and to provide leadership and services for Pickett County. The Chamber was voted the Upper Cumberland Business Journal’s 2008 Ovation Award for “Best Tourism Based Economic Development” entity. For more information, the Chamber can be reached by calling toll-free 888-406-4704 or email pickettchamber@ twlakes.net. The web address is www.dalehollow.com/chamber-commerce.
This 1830s-era house is believed to be the oldest standing residence in Pickett County. It will eventually become part of a living history exhibit on the site of the Welcome Center facility.
Living the Dream (CRDC), the sponsoring organization of LTD, have worked together since 1997 to sponsor many projects in the Upper Cumberland, all designed to improve the quality of life in the region by meeting very specific needs, especially in the area of safe, affordable housing. These projects have included a Farm Labor Facility, HUD 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities, a Low-Income Elderly Facility, Relative Caregiver Housing, and a soon-to-be constructed United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development funded assisted living facility in Overton County.
Living the Dream: Independent Living With Heart Wendy Askins, Executive Director of the Upper Cumberland Development District After many months of hard work by volunteers and contractors alike, Living the Dream Independent Living Facility is finally a reality. Located on eleven acres west of Cookeville, Living the Dream, or LTD, is a 6,600 square foot living facility designed for those who would otherwise be unable to live independently. “Living the Dream is literally a dream come true for me. We’ve had a lot of hurdles to overcome to make this facility a reality, and it took over a year and half to get it off the ground, but all the hard work has been worth it,” said Wendy Askins, executive director of the Upper Cumberland Development District (UCDD) and licensed assisted living administrator. “I’ve volunteered many hours to make this project successful, as have numerous others. Serving others is a calling, and it is also a fundamental core value of the Upper Cumberland Development District.
While these facilities have been funded through a variety of state and federal assistance programs, Living the Dream is different. The entire facility, from inception to construction has been built using only private funding; not one dollar of state or federal money has gone into the construction of LTD. The facility was born of the desire to meet the needs of underserved populations, and the belief that such projects can still be accomplished by people who have faith and the conviction that serving others is the highest calling one can receive. Living the Dream is proof that fundamental needs can be met throughout our community by those who share the same dream of helping others. For more information about LTD, call resident manager Sherry Weaver at 931-858-4117.
“We still have a lot to get done before we are completely finished, but were really happy to have come as far as we have. We looked for a long time to determine the greatest housing needs in our region, and assisted living along with independent living facilities kept coming to the forefront as a needed service in the Upper Cumberland. We are so happy to be able to share LTD with our friends and neighbors.” Phase II of Living the Dream is nearing completion, with Phase III, which will have a covered atrium as its focal point, ready to begin. Living the Dream’s indoor facility includes all modern amenities such as a media room, exercise space, computers, commercial kitchen and laundry. The campus area contains garden spaces, walking areas, a 50’ x 100’ barn to house a variety of therapeutic animals and parking for visitors. Rollercoaster Yard Sale Bargain hunters, this story is for you. The Rollercoaster Yard Sale is a dream come true for yard sale enthusiasts. It is the oldest and most authentic marathon yard sale in Tennessee or Kentucky. 2012 will mark its 27th year! 150 miles of scenic highway loaded with some of the best bargains around at a wonderful time of year – the weather is usually not to hot or cold. The marathon route makes a complete circle around the Dale Hollow Lake region including the towns/cities of Cave City, Glasgow, Temple Hill, Tompkinsville, Burkesville, and Albany in Kentucky and Celina, Livingston, and Byrdstown in Tennessee. You can start and end anywhere you choose. There are a multitude of small businesses along the route to welcome visitors to the area with places to stay, dine, and shop. If you have members of your group that would rather not yard sale, there is plenty for them to do as well. They could spend their time out on the lake or at any of the many historical sites along the route. Most communities also feature special events to offer a taste of their community to those visiting. Whether you are looking for antique cars or gently used furniture, there is so much to choose from. Items such as wagon wheels, general yard sale fare, old tools, quilts, handcrafts, produce, and so much more have often been spotted along the route. Many of the sales congregate in central locations making it easier for shoppers to visit their sales – plus save fuel. Many charitable organizations use the sale as an opportunity to raise funds for their projects throughout the year. The Celina Lions Club is a good example. Their annual pancake breakfast makes it possible for them to assist needy families in the area. They also organize the set up of vendors at the fairgrounds to promote people coming to their town – to buy and sell. Thousands of people enjoy the sale each year and plan their vacation around it. We welcome each of you to visit
the area and have a wonderful time! For current information, please visit the sale website at www.TheRollercoasterYardSale.com. History of a Feud The Naming of Illwill Creek by Darren Shell The cove that houses Eagle Cove Marina and Pilot Island is rich in history. Some days I sit on the rocky point of Pilot Island and look around taking in this beautiful view—and also experiencing the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Let’s look around a bit. To our immediate left, just beneath the water surface, lies a foundation Vann’s Branch Meeting House just out of view. Even in low water, the stones of this old building are too deep to see from shore. These are the remnants of the Vann’s Branch Meeting House. In all likelihood, the old church did have a good spring to feed water to its practitioners. Many buildings of its day were known as the spring that fed them. This spot was most likely the local source for refreshment in the form of water and spirituality. Vann’s Branch Meeting House, about 1940 Imagine the children scampering through the yard. I swear I can nearly hear those tiny voices laughing and playing while family members conversed. The main road ran right across this point, so the world stopped by for a visit on a regular basis. The road stretching toward Lillydale finds the Sulphur School just a few hundred yards beyond and to the left. This same road connects us to Lillydale and Miller’s Mill. The old road takes us elsewhere, too—across the river. Straight out in front of us, beneath the lake surface, there was a shallow ford in the river once known as the Bryson Ford. It connected Vann’s Branch families to the hollows across the river via the old road. But over there—things were just different. Let me explain. I tend to paint a pretty picture of all the things on Dale Hollow. It’s just my nature. I love it here. But at times, even here, some folks just didn’t get along. This was one of those places and times. Long before Vann’s Branch “metropolized” into the 10-15 houses it possessed when the lake came, this community had some family matters across the river. Without going into great detail, that “yonder” bunch had begun a bit of a feud with its south-of-the-river kinfolk. In fact, it had gotten quite out of hand, and for years the southern settlers of this stretch of river held those northern kin in ill will. Yep. Illwill Creek took its name from an old Hatfield and McCoy type feud. Most of the descendants of those families today still separate that name in their speech—pronouncing it Ill-Will. Time marched on. Today, in the distance my views take in the Kentucky State Police shuttling passengers to and from Trooper Island on their big barge. It’s a constant flow over the waves. Just beneath was the community known as Phillips Bend. Phillips and Upchurches settled in this wide and final bend of Wolf River. The long power lines overhead act as a finish line for the old river, and a State Line for boaters—thus mingling past and present before us.
by the name of Susan Mullins Biggerstaff, or “Aunt Sus”. Old Tom was often referred to as Uncle Tom. So when I mention closely-knit communities in these parts, this illustrates that point to perfection. Everybody was somebody’s aunt or uncle. Uncle Tom had a problem. He owned this bluff and a strong sense of compassion for it. He knew that it was special, and he tried to keep it secret and safe as long as possible. Skull Bluff was a burial ground for Native American Indians. A cave in the bluff wall housed dozens and dozens of dead bodies and the rich early American artifacts they treasured. Bags of arrowheads and clay pots filled with special river stones sat alongside these ancient rotting corpses. Lavish woven blankets covered the dead. This precious treasure trove of Native American history was a museum in and of itself. And Tom was intent on keeping it safe. But this was Ill-Will country, and somehow word got out. Luke Smith began slowly and secretly raiding the cave. Before Tom knew what was happening, Luke had pilfered the majority of the artifacts and squandered them. Tom was furious. The two had words and nearly came to blows over it—and their feud lasted until their dying days. Their deaths may have ended much of the ill will in Illwill. And there you have it—the view from the point of Pilot Island at Vann’s Branch. Whether you are a history buff or lake-lover, this place has a rich history for all. And there’s nothing ill about that. Upchurch Farm Phillips Bottom
Upchurch Farm, Phillips Bend of Lillydale, early 1900s Let’s reel-in our view back to our point. I’ve got one more story to tell about this place you’ll enjoy. Take a gaze to our right. Across the lake (and the Bryson Ford of the river), we see a huge bluff overlooking the lake. That large outcropping overlook is now a housing development called Skull Bluff. It is known by the creepy name because that’s what it’s always been called. And it was called that for a reason. Long before the lake was built, a man named Tom Mullins owned this bluff and stretch of river. He was brother to a gal I often mention in my Lillydale stories www.Go2DHL.com • Toll Free 855-526-4477

Golfing around Dale Hollow Lake Of the many quality golf courses in the Middle Tennessee and South Central Kentucky regions, arguably none stand out in as many ways as the 18-hole Dale Hollow Lake Golf Course situated in Burkesville, Ky. Opened in 2003 as part of the Kentucky State Park system, Dale Hollow Lake Golf Course quickly became a “must play” course for golfers of all skill levels. The public-play course measures 7,100 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 72. The course rating is 71.0 and the slope rating is 131 – indicating it is an extremely challenging course for golfers looking to test their game. There are five sets of tees to accommodate all golfers, however. “The combination of very little rough and severe fall-away edges on some fairways make missing fairways extremely penal,” commented one golfer. The Dale Hollow Golf Course has bent grass tees, Zoysia grass fairways and large bent grass greens with sometimes severe undulation. The course features many elevation changes, spectacular scenery and masterfully works its way through nature as if it belonged in the first place. Several holes bring water into play and about 60 sand bunkers also increase the difficulty of play. “Numerous picturesque holes,” said another Dale Hollow golfer. “Dale Hollow is easy on the eyes and offers all the challenge you want.” The course starts with a relatively easy par 4 from an elevated tee, leading to an wide fairway. It quickly gets more difficult, with the 400-yard par 4 sixth hole and the 412-yard par 4 10th. The 14th hole offers a decision, with a good drive over water leading to a chance to go for the green in two. Numerous rocks, caves, springs, and gorges can also be seen or come into play while traversing Dale Hollow Golf Course. A full clubhouse and driving range also complement the course. Collared shirts are required at all times and no denim is allowed. Walking the course is restricted to weekday play only. Designed by nationally acclaimed architect Brian Ault, the course has earned several accolades since its opening, including being nominated as one of Golf Digest magazine’s top 10 new courses in 2003, named to host the 2004 Tri-State Junior tournament and listed as one of Golf Digest magazine’s top-rated golf courses in Kentucky for 2005-2006. Bruce Bottom is the on-site PGA Professional at the course. Local Heritage of South Central Kentucky Roots run deep in south central Kentucky. Generation after generation has been lovingly taught family and local history with a charge to protect and pass it on to the next. The earliest record of land deeded in Cumberland County, KY was to settlers by Iroquois Indians in 1768. Some families boast of ancestors that fought in the Revolutionary War. (Several Revolutionary War veterans were paid with land grants to properties in the Dale Hollow Lake region in Kentucky and Tennessee). The area endeavors to share this history thru several points of interest such as local museums and exhibits, numerous historical markers, the Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site, the Tompkinsville One Room School House, the Rolley Hole Marble Dome and local events such as the Glasgow Highland Games (and others). Families cherish the music and arts of their ancestors, too – as exhibited at some of the local events. The Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site is a treasure trove of local history, but they also attempt to engage the younger generations and those not particularly interested in “history”. They have a plethora of events throughout the season, plus an Adventure Quest that is offered to visitors. The events range in scope from HAM operator focused, bluegrass music, geological based to special events for the smaller children with Pirate and Princess themes and of interest to all ages with pets in their costumes. Old Mulkey Meeting House stands as a testament to the lives of the early settlers of the area and their religious life. Daniel Boone’s sister, Hannah, is among those buried in the on site cemetery. For more information and to obtain event information, please visit: www.parks.ky.gov and look for the link to Old Mulkey Meeting House. You can reach the park by phone March thru December at 270-487-8481. Let Park Manager, Sheila Rush know that you read about them here.
The Glasgow/Barren County area was settled by mostly Scottish individuals in the beginning. The Glasgow Highland Games began in 1986 as a way for local residents to celebrate their Celtic heritage. The event has grown to one of Kentucky’s Top 10 Events, with nearly 20,000 people from all over the United States, Canada, & Great Britain in attendance. Among the activities are Scottish dance, bagpipe performances, theatrical productions, athletic competitions such as hurling, stone lifting, and caber tossing. You can learn more at www.GlasgowHighlandGames. com. The 2012 dates are June 1-3. Come join the fun and festivities! There is a multitude of places to explore and learn about in the Glasgow/Barren County area. Take a peak at www.VisitGlasgowBarren.com or give them a call at 800-264-3161. Cumberland County celebrated their bicentennial last year. They too have a rich history to share. Many Civil War events occurred in the area (not just in Cumberland County) due to the proximity to the North/South boundaries during the war. Just a few of the interesting people that are linked to the area include the Cheek family (the originators of Maxwell House Coffee), General John Edwards King who commanded the Third Brigade in the Battle of Thames during the War of 1812. Then, there is the first oil gusher in North America which was struck in Cumberland County in 1829. Interestingly, the oil wasn’t used as we would today. It was bottled and sold as a medicine in the US and England under the trade name “American Oil”. Abraham Lincoln’s father, Thomas Lincoln was a two term constable in Cumberland County. That is not all. There is more to discover, so plan your visit now. Visit www.cumberlandcounty.com for more information on places to stay, dine, and more. Have a wonderful visit!
Monroe County has much more to share with visitors than just the Old Mulkey Meeting House. Barbeque is a prized commodity all over the area. There are two Amish, Mennonite, or Plain People communities without phone service but invite the public to come by and take home some of their delicious products and produce. Monroe County is also home to the One Room School House and the Rolley Hole Marble Dome which shares the ancient craft/game of marbles. There are many quilt blocks displayed around the area and so much more. Visit www.monroeky.com for additional information and to plan your visit. You may reach them by phone at 270-487-1314.

Annie’s Travels & Treasures Parkway Restaurant is known for their home-style cooking that affords the comfort factor diners love. They are conveniently located close to many of the Dale Hollow Lake marinas. Kelly and Joann (Jo) Jones have owned the restaurant for five years now. They love to serve their guests. It is truly a family affair with Jo’s sister, Lucy, serving customers and friends – and occasionally you will have their sweet grandchildren, Taylor and/or Roger, wait on you or clear off your table. The food is what keeps customers coming back for more. Their catfish is out of this world! The breading is simply divine. It’s a meal that is sure to fill you up. Kelly and Jo’s loyal clients will travel some distance to enjoy some of the best catfish around which is accompanied by sides of homemade coleslaw, hush puppies and fries. Some folks make the drive just to meet the couple that fell in love online several years ago. They started off as online friends playing poker. Soon after, Kelly moved here from Canada, and then they took a leap of faith and bought the restaurant. Jo has worked in the restaurant business most of her life. They have worked hard to build an excellent reputation for great food, consistent quality, service and great ambience. Kelly and Jo exude happiness and passion. You can tell they enjoy what they do by the “love” they put into their cooking and in their level of service. Kelly is always cooking at the grill making sure that every dish comes out perfect. Now, “Annie”/ I can tell you that you do not leave there hungry. They always serve up generous portions! My favorite continues to be their western omelet. This omelet hangs over the plate; chock full of meat and fresh vegetables that are sautéed before adding to the egg mixture alongside their hand shredded hash brown potatoes. Their hamburger steak platter, a favorite of my son Blake, is hand patted ground chuck from the local butcher – fresh daily. Blake licks is so happy when he can sit down and bite into this copious platter. This is a favorite of his for breakfast – and he is not a breakfast person. A new addition to their Saturday menu is their melt-in-your-mouth BBQ baby back ribs. No knife is needed for these ribs! The meat falls off the bones. Make sure to ask for plenty of napkins. The scrumptious secret BBQ sauce generously covers the meat. The rib eye and Sirloin steak special also runs on Saturdays. These steaks are seasoned just right, tender and cooked to perfection. The flat iron steak special runs every day and fresh pot roast served with all the trimmings is on Thursdays. They have recently added grilled salmon and blackened grouper to their menu. Everyone loves these new additions! Some say it is the best they have ever eaten. This is the type of place that you want to come to with your friends and family. Many come daily for their favorite meal. Come to Parkway Restaurant and feel like you are at home with mamma’s cooking! Say hello to Kelly and Jo and make sure that you tell them that “Annie” sent you. Bon Appetite! (931-823-9414)

ALBRECHT PUBLISHING GROUP, LLC
Christmas in the Country is a wonderful four week celebration in the picturesque downtown square of Livingston, Tennessee. The Livingston-Overton County Chamber of Commerce and the downtown Merchants Association have over the years lovingly transformed the square into a showcase with lighted lampposts, brick sidewalks, a veterans memorial, fountain and lots of bustling shops including antique and gift stores (together with the nostalgic Overton Department Store and E.B. Gray Jewelers that have been in the same families for generations). There is even a “happening” dance studio for children and adults that offer the popular Zumba dance program which transform ladies figures while having fun dancing to some sassy music. The spirit of Christmas is ignited as the big live tree is proudly placed on the courthouse lawn and all the lights are turned on and the Christmas carols are sung. The merchants stay open late for the four Friday evenings prior to Christmas. Along with the later shopping hours, there are hot chocolate, seasonal cookies and lots of Christmas cheer. The small town atmosphere is a delight and the festive holiday spirit is infectious. First Christian Church in Livingston set up their Praise and Worship band on the square the first Friday evening to share Christmas songs and to give away coats, scarves and mittens to those in need. The blessings overflow and the true meaning of Christmas is shown through the simple act of giving from the heart. Christmas parades are big in Livingston and this year’s Christmas parade was no exception with over 250 floats, cars and horse entries. The crisp air and clear blue sky made a perfect backdrop for the day. Everyone loves a parade! Whether you are sitting or standing on the sidelines watching or marching in the Livingston Academy marching band, sitting on a church float, riding in a classic car waving to the crowd, or riding your decorated horse, smiles are abundant. The First Christian Church again set up on the square with their band signing Christmas carols. The ladies of the church made dozens of homemade cookies and hot chocolate to pass out to those watching the parade. The coat, hat, mitten and blanket drive was in full swing where the lovely June and Brandy Martin were helping folks find that perfect coat or accessory to keep them warm during the winter months. Little Grant Burckhard saved his money to buy a fifty pound bag of popcorn kernels to pop popcorn in his popcorn machine (that Santa brought a few Christmas’s ago) so he could give away free popcorn and holiday cheer. Livingston is one of those idyllic American towns full of life, character, and good down home values. Come, enjoy the magic of Christmas sometime and see Dale Hollow Lake through all the seasons. Cabins are plentiful, many with fireplaces to stay toasty warm. There is little that is better than curling up next to a nice warm fire in the country, reading a book, resting and taking a long walk through the countryside. Enjoy the true meaning of Christmas with us next year and see folks giving from their heart spreading the yuletide cheer. For more information about the events year round, contact the Livingston-Overton County Chamber of Commerce by phone at 1-800-876-7393 or by
Annie’s Travels & Treasures visiting their website www. overtonco.com. J&B Stuff is the place at Dale Hollow Lake to go to furnish your new home, renovated home, cabin or houseboat with home furnishings, antiques, collectibles and more. Bonnie Besecker, owner of J&B Stuff and husband Jack love antiquing. They been offering an excellent selection of merchandise for many years and you could say that “antiquing is in their blood”. They have a passion for finding great antique pieces and displaying them in their over 5,000 square feet store located conveniently on scenic Hwy. 111 just north of Sunset Marina and Byrdstown’s downtown district. Their assortment is superb and Bonnie continues to add to the collection, including a large selection of Tervis. For those of you who love Tervis as much as “Annie” does, their nautical and lake assortment is huge, including anchors, bass fish and many other logos. Tervis has a lifetime warranty and they make excellent gifts and are great mugs/cups to drink warm or cold beverages. Bonnie and Jack love Dale Hollow Lake. When they bought their lakeview home in Byrdstown several years ago, they decided that they needed to make this their business home as well and set up shop in Byrdstown. Their store is well organized and one can find some awesome home furnishings from the largest selection of lake and cabin wooden signs, to their new canvas signs with country and inspirational quotes that would go well in any setting. Their new wrought iron collection of garden décor, home décor and boat décor is the largest that “Annie” has ever seen. Bonnie has a large selection of glassware (cups, fiesta, cookie jars, plates, pitchers, saucers, etc.). It is amazing and they also have a wide assortment of antique and refinished furniture - with some primitive pieces. J&B Stuff has a huge selection of metal signs with all different motifs, perfect for your “Man Cave” or other home décor needs. They will also be offering a large selection of “Tilly” hats and a special Dale Hollow Lake ornament with a bass fishing boat that every Christmas tree should have. These make perfect stocking stuffers. One of “Annie’s” favorite sections of the store is the linens. Bonnie always has a wide assortment of tablecloths with matching napkins, handkerchiefs, aprons and linen towels. In addition, they have a large selection of knives, tools, farm implements, vintage jewelry and pins and so much more. If you are out for a day trip, love to shop or are decorating your home or boat, come and visit J&B Stuff and tell them that “Annie” sent you. Gray Jewelry is a lovely family owned jewelry shop in the revitalized historic Livingston courthouse square. Started by E.B. Grey in 1914 and continuing through four generations, this family has continued the tradition of offering fine quality jewelry to the soon to be engaged couples, those celebrating anniversaries and birthdays, gifts for children to commemorate a birth, baptism and other special occasions. They pride themselves in offering
personalized service to their clients. Ms. Virginia Grey is always gracious greeting her clients with her lovely smile. She cherishes the families and clients that they have had the opportunity to serve over the years - for the gift to her of being allowed to share their happy times and to listen during sad and challenging times. The jewelry business has changed over the years. What used to be a predominantly gold based business has shifted to more silver, platinum and costume jewelry. A lot of the new higher end costume jewelry has been designed to be flexible and the stones to be changed out to personalize necklaces, bracelets and rings with different beads, stones and motifs. Ms. Virginia feels like their family business has been able prosper in this lake community, in part, because of the high level of service they offer, and their alliance with national buying groups that allows them to get the best prices while keeping up with the latest trends and fashions just like the “big box” stores. E.B. Grey has a huge selection of engagement rings, lovely diamond settings in gold, silver and platinum. They offer rings, bracelets, gold chains and charms and a large selection of trendy costume jewelry to accessorize any outfit. They also have a large variety of children’s keepsake boxes, charms, bracelets and crosses for all ages. E.B. Grey is proud of their large selection of Fossil handbags, watches and clocks. You can custom order trophies, desk ornaments or special custom jewelry items from one of their many catalogs. E.B. Grey also offers excellent jewelry and watch repair. Over the years, they have invested in a laser welder that allows them to repair just about anything. “Annie” loves her Swiss watches and is happy to know that E.B. Grey can fix her “Tag” watches and her “Bucherer” that she bought while living in Europe in the 90’s. Hometown shopping is so rare these days; however, the Merchant’s Association in Livingston in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce has been able to capture and preserve the downtown shopping experience in Livingston, one of the communities surrounding Dale Hollow Lake. Making it one of the most inviting shopping experiences that anyone could ask for. Visit Ms. Virginia and her family at E.B. Grey and buy your loved one a precious gift that will be cherished for years for that special occasion or a “just because” moment. They will be happy to help you and get to know you. Happy shopping! Tell Ms. Virginia that “Annie” sent you. Ollie’s Place is the place that makes you feel like you are right at home with Mama cooking for you. Ollie and his wife, Janie, have been serving up good ole home cooked comfort/soul food for four years at this location. The restaurant has a warm, homey feeling, like that found in your Mama’s kitchen. Ollie’s is a bit off the beaten track in Celina, TN, yet close to many of the marinas on Dale Hollow Lake. It is easy to find with the larger than life elephant “Tipsy” greeting you in front of the restaurant. The day that “Annie” went to visit Ollie, the elephant had a large “Happy Birthday” banner hung from his neck like a bib. Ollie said that www.Go2DHL.com • Toll Free 855-526-4477

Annie’s Travels & Treasures they were celebrating one of their waitress’s birthdays. This is a must visit restaurant when you are at Dale Hollow Lake, taking a road trip down one of the scenic highways that surround Celina - or after church on Sunday. Ollie’s has been compared to the legendary Loveless Café in Nashville, TN. Folks flock from all over to meet Ollie and eat and their establishment. Ollie’s fun loving personality comes through on his menu with some tantalizing menu items such as the “Tipsy” burger – a three pound hand formed burger. Want something a bit smaller; try the “Elephant Burger” or any of the many other menu options. Ollie’s has a full menu and some awesome specials on the weekends. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and their breakfast brings the local crowd in for their piping hot coffee and breakfast specials. Ollie’s has fried bologna, a southern favorite, or city ham and eggs. Ollie’s introduced the “elephant” sausage with eggs and country fried potatoes. One of “Annie’s” favorites is the homemade soups and chili’s, served with grilled cheese or a BLT. These homemade items can warm up almost anybody in the winter/fall months both inside and out. The weekend specials have folks coming from all over to enjoy. How does fried chicken and country ham sound with all the southern fixins? Saturday offers all you can eat catfish, ocean perch and frog legs with some yummy sides such as stewed potatoes, green beans, pinto beans, fried apples and corn. Ollie also serves a mean Rib eye steak that is to die for. If you like meat, this is the place. Don’t forget about desserts - they are all homemade and the homemade pies adorn the counter. The selection included caramel and chocolate pies the day that “Annie” visited, piled sky high with fluffy meringue. Ollie’s has plenty of room for family reunions, church groups, business meeting, special occasions, larger parties and they have a multipurpose room that seats about 50-60. Getting married? Let Ollie take care of your small group wedding and catering. While you are waiting for your order, the bucket of fresh roasted peanuts on your table are there to nosh on and “Tipsy” the elephant always hopes that one of their guests will come out and feed him a peanut or two! “Tipsy” the elephant has even been known to give out a happy yelp, smile or wink, so say hello to “Tipsy” while you are coming in to Ollie’s or exiting. Ollie’s Place is worth the drive to Celina and will become one of your favorites. While there, don’t forget to visit their downtown antiques district, that is chock full of antiques, gifts, and more. Check out Ollie’s daily or weekend specials by phoning Ollie or Janie at 931-243-6363. They are located at 710 East Lake Ave. in Celina, TN. Make sure that you let “Ollie” know that “Annie” sent you. Bon Appétit. Ain’t That Nice is a wonderful antique shop in downtown Celina offering high quality antiques, furniture, estate jewelry and so much more. Their primitive furniture is very reasonably priced and there is a great selection of pie safes, custom cabinets and many museum quality pieces. Many of the furniture pieces are adorned with collectibles, which they have a large selection of. Jody Walters and her husband, Tim, have been collecting antiques 32

since they were children. They have turned there passion into a business where they can share their love with others and the unique pieces that they have collected along the way. Sometimes they like to keep the pieces, but here lately, most of the pieces are sold in this very busy store. After selling their businesses in Indiana a few years ago, they decided to come live at the lake they fell in love with - Dale Hollow Lake. They treasure the fishing and the small town life. At that time, downtown Celina was in the process of revitalizing and reinventing themselves following the demise of the textile industry. Antiques and collectibles seemed to fit nicely in the historic downtown area. “Ain’t that Nice” opened in the fall of 2009 and has been serving clients from all over the country for two years now. This building has tremendous character with beautiful hardwood flooring, pine-lined walls and the original ceiling. The business continues to be a hobby for the couple, and if the lights are off, they are closed while going on road trips to find more treasures and exploring new areas of this great country. A perfect day for Jody and Tim is to find an estate sale in a small town or visit yard sales and auctions in some off-the-beaten track places. Jody loves primitives. This is evident with her eye for unique quality pieces. One of “Annie’s” favorites is the piece in the front of the store which holds many different types of grain and/or seed. It is just a fun piece that they use for their check-out/multipurpose counter. Ain’t that Nice also has a great selection of antique fishing lures and tackle. One of the activities that lured them down here was Tim’s love of fishing. Tim loves to sneak out and catch some fish and just relax on the soothing, pristine waters of Dale Hollow Lake. Jody and Tim continue to do what they love, and share it with others. Come to Celina and take a road trip to the Ain’t that Nice and other antique stores in the square. Ain’t That Nice is located at 306 Dow Avenue and it probably is a good idea to call ahead to make sure that they are open. They can be reached at 931-243-6444 or by appointment, 765-425-7075. Happy Shopping! Farmhouse Restaurant in Byrdstown, TN, (minutes from many of the marinas) is undoubtedly one of the most popular restaurants on a Friday or Saturday night due to their scrumptious catfish, hush puppies and fresh garden salad bar. This is a family friendly country restaurant, owned by Retta and Steve Reagan, and their beautiful daughter Grace Ann. They offer daily specials, and delicious menu items, six days a week (closed on Sunday). “Annie” and the Burckhard family love the Farmhouse Restaurant and this is a special treat when we get to indulge ourselves in the Friday night special of catfish, breaded shrimp and all the fixins. “Annie” loves the garden
Annie’s Travels & Treasures salad with the fresh selection of romaine and mixed lettuces, scrumptious broccoli and cauliflower salads, potato and macaroni salad and more. A lot of the produce on the salad bar is grown in the Reagan’s garden or other local farms. The bar also includes homemade soups, chili, fresh fruit cocktail and some homemade desserts, such as banana pudding. Retta and Steve are one of the hardest working couples that I have ever seen. They personally built the restaurant, sanded the pine that lines the cathedral style ceiling and worked lovingly to create this very comfortable, cozy atmosphere. The Reagan’s are true community servants and are God’s hands and feet in the community that they live in and serve. They work tirelessly in helping those in need, bring a dish to a sick friend, client or a church friend. They also serve on various committees and have spearheaded many of the events, including the Pickett County Fair which has become a very popular venue in the county and is loved by many. Retta and Steve have also been very instrumental in nurturing the Pickett County Horseman’s Association and the many events that are held throughout the year. They also open their doors on Christmas Eve to serve those less fortunate a full Christmas dinner at no charge. Retta and her helpers served up hundreds of meals last Christmas and Steve and his elves delivered over a hundred meals to shut-ins. Their leadership skills and selfless ways show the true meaning of a Christian lifestyle. They have trained and provided employment for so many and this is a true family environment. Steve and Retta don’t like the limelight, but they are two special people that bring light into many people’s lives with the little things that they do for others, day in and day out. They will tell you that they are blessed with a beautiful daughter, great friends and family and the love of their church family and God. The Reagans can be reached at the Farmhouse Restaurant which is conveniently located on scenic Hwy. 111, just south of Static/and the TN/KY state line and by the Wolf River. If you have a catering need, family function, celebration or business meeting, make sure to call Retta to accommodate your needs. They can be reached by telephone at 931-864-4070. Sunset Restaurant on Dale Hollow Lake is the premier lakeside dining restaurant offering gourmet and eclectic food with attitude. Chef Zoom has had the helm of the restaurant as manager and head chef for nine years now. He has a passion for creating some delightful dishes. He specializes in seafood, Cajun and Creole cuisine and cooking with bourbon and crème. His dishes, many of them daily specials, express his personality and tantalize your taste buds. As “Annie’s” son says, “the flavors dance on your tongue”. Chef Zoom loves to cook with bourbon (not whiskey). He brings this expertise from his previous years of cooking at Dagwoods in Bardstown, Kentucky while under the tutelage of the late Chef John Hall. Some of his favorite signature dishes include Shrimp Louise and Shrimp Baton Rouge. “Annie’s” favorite is keeping room for dessert and having some warm Jack Daniels Bread Pudding a la mode with some vanilla ice cream and a cup of coffee.
Some other favorites are the grilled steaks, succulent pork and chicken dishes, as well as the Kentucky hot brown sandwich. If you love salads, this is the place to come for a great salad topped with their homemade dressings. Of course “Annie” is partial to the homemade balsamic vinaigrette dressing on a bed of fresh mixed greens, fresh produce and grilled chicken. The floating Sunset Restaurant has a great holiday feel. Vacationers pull into the Sunset Marina dock and tie up their boats to enjoy breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. Some nights the outside patio is open for business and occasionally on those nights you might find live music on deck including the possibility that Chef Zoom might be entertaining by playing a few tunes on his guitar for his guests. Chef Zoom and “Chumley” of the ship store love to pick and play. Chumley (the manager of the ship store) has written a tune about Dale Hollow Lake that can be listened to on the www.sunsetmarina.com website. Their lunch menu is great, including delicious hamburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches and one of my favorites is the delicious Reuben sandwich with pasta salad. Sunset Restaurant is very kid friendly and has an awesome children’s menu that can be colored on or used as a game of tictac-toe. One of “Annie’s” favorite events of the year is the Crab Boil that is held at the end of summer. This is an amazing night of all you can eat seafood that includes crab, mussels, clams, shrimp, catfish, and other seafood, cooked many different ways including Creole and Cajun. There are great fixins and homemade desserts by their pastry chef, too. The night is also filled with live music. This is a fantastic summer event and the food is superb. It is a must attend event at Dale Hollow Lake. Make sure to reserve early, as the tickets sell out fast. Sunset Restaurant is a great place to have a special meal. Be sure to talk to Chef Zoom about your reception, reunions, bridal and baby showers or corporate functions. Many weddings have been held at this beautiful restaurant and there are million dollar views for pictures and great memories. Sunset Restaurant is adorned with a great nostalgic antique neon light that illuminates the night sky, but the name is fitting for the restaurant, as the sunsets are gorgeous. Many a night, you will see folks rocking in the “Cracker Barrel” type rocking chairs looking out across the waters while savoring scrumptious “Blue Bell” ice cream hand-dipped from their ice cream station – while waiting for the sunset. Children love to take bread scraps from the restaurant that Chef Zoom saves for them to feed the fish. They love it. In the evenings, the fish dance through the lighted waters, giving the children lots to do! Sunset Restaurant is the place to be on Dale Hollow Lake. If you are vacationing, looking for a romantic getaway or a great day trip, this is the place to come. The Obey River Campground is adjacent to Sunset Marina and Resort and Restaurant property and it makes for a good place for a long walk. There is also the very family/kid friendly Obey River beach that has a great sandy roped off swimming area for the children to swim and enjoy a hot summer day. Sunset Restaurant is located right off of Hwy. 111, just south of the bridge in Byrdstown, TN. Their schedule, list of events and specials can be viewed online at www.sunsetmarina. com or subscribe to their regular e-newsletters for up-to-date information and specials. They can be reached at 931-864-3146.

Quilt Trails Quilt lovers are in for a treat around the Dale Hollow Lake region. Quilt trails abound and the Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival is not to be missed. You don’t have to travel far to spot the bright squares adorning buildings of all sorts – barns, stores, homes and outbuildings. Some might wonder why they are so popular, but when you learn how treasured quilts are by those living here, you wonder no more. They want to share a part of themselves, the rich history of the area, and much more. Due to many factors, local families relied on their ingenuity and resourcefulness to survive, as did many families in other areas of the country – especially during The Great Depression. Families were close and possessed a strong work ethic. The quilters in the family made quilts (as well as clothing) out of whatever they could find sometimes. Even though raw materials were sometimes hard to come by, they still took the time to put love, creativity and care into each stitch. Quilts were valued and especially appreciated in the cold winter months. The skills and values of the previous generations have been passed down to the current ones, plus others have moved to the area and share the

same passion. Even those that can’t quilt - love the designs and memories they bring. The region wide Upper Cumberland Quilt Trail alone has over 300 squares on their route and more are being added. New signage has been added recently, plus they have an informative website - www.UpperCumberlandQuiltTrail.com. There you can learn more about their scheduled tours and more. Many counties around the lake are working on organizing their block trails on a local level. Several businesses in Livingston, TN have recently added blocks to their facades. Tompkinsville and Albany, KY were working diligently last year to expand the blocks displayed in their communities. They are beautiful! The 24th Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival will be held September 13-15, 2012 in Algood, TN. The theme will be “Trip Around the World.” The Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival is a primary fundraiser for the Algood Senior Citizen Center and an annual delight for quilt lovers from all over. The Festival will feature over 500 quilts on display including approximately 200 entered into competition in ten classes entered by 60-70 Upper Cumberland area artists. Additionally, there will be special exhibitions of 30 “Keepsake” quilts and 50 quilts along the theme of “Food for Body and Soul.” Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation-Masters will feature quilts made by residents and their families. The two schools located in Algood will feature quilts made by parents, grandparents and friends of the schools. There will also be a very special exhibition of the quilts of JoAnn Gill a long-time supporter and 2011 Festival Exemplary Service Award winner. Over thirty vendors, merchants and crafters are expected to be on hand displaying and selling their wares. The Algood Senior Citizen Center will feature the Country Store serving snacks and beans and cornbread along with material, crafts, baked goods, etc. A Preview Dinner and Auction and a special tour of homes and barn quilts in the Upper Cumberland area will also be offered. Clay County, TN has survived many challenges brought on by the exodus of the garment industry several decades ago (when NAFTA sent most of our manufacturing jobs offshore). Hundreds of Clay County families were affected and the manufacturing industry for the most part dried up. Clay County has been home to some legendary fishermen, including the iconic Billy Westmoreland and today’s Smallmouth Guru - Stephen Headrick of Punisher Lures and Dale Hollow 1 Stop. Celina and Clay County have had to reinvent themselves, much like Detroit and the car industry. Today, they concentrate on their biggest assets - Dale Hollow Lake and their downtown square that is in revitalization mode. The County Mayor Mr. Dale Reagan and the local Chamber Executive Director Mr. Ray Norris have rallied the businesses to take pride in what they have and to promote the downtown area as THE place to come for antiquing, closeout tools and other odd lots. They also host many festivals and events to keep the tourists and the locals satisfied. One of my favorite events in the fall is the Clay County Chili Cook-Off that takes place each October. This
event has continued to grow each year. If you like chili cooked all different ways, appreciate a small town country atmosphere, then this is the event that you shouldn’t miss. This year over 25 vendors took pride in decorating their area with a harvest theme. Pumpkins, gourds, and Halloween and harvest decorations made it a very festive day. Each entry had a team name and they cooked chili in big vats, crock pots and on two burner camp stoves. The choice and variety of chili varied in intensity of heat. Some added seafood or harvest vegetables and all had their own secret ingredients! The event rallies everyone around the historic courthouse and for a very small price; one would receive a large souvenir cup (that our family loves for soup and hot chocolate). You can take your bowl around and enjoy unlimited samples at the different participants. Some chili was served Cincinnati style with cheese, onions, green onions and crackers – others not. There were other activities in the square that day including some live country and bluegrass music by some very talented pickers. Celina, and the hills surrounding, are full of musicians and everyone loves the opportunity to pick and play with their friends and neighbors. In front of Town Square Antiques, there were some very competitive corn hole tournaments going on with old and young participating. (Corn hole is a game that requires you to throw a bean filled canvas bag into a hole and to tally points. It is played with two or four players. Teams can be very competitive and it has become quite popular in and around Dale Hollow Lake.) Make sure to come and enjoy the fall foliage, the scenic windy roads and the small town atmosphere of Celina, Clay County. Visit the Chamber at their new office located at 424 Brown Street or online at www.dalehollowlake.org. They may be reached by phone at 931-243-3338.

Southeast Pack Trips Southeast Pack Trips in the Big South Fork is just a short drive from Dale Hollow Lake and is the place to go for horseback riding. If you would like to try the real “cowboy” experience, owner and rancher Larry McMillan will arrange a memorable outing for you. “Cowboy” Larry (as most folks refer to him in the area) has been riding the Big South Fork trails for over thirty years. Whether you are a novice or an experienced rider, Larry will accommodate you with recommendations on which trail, fit the horse to your experience level and comfort and can guide you, or send you in the right direction. Cowboy Larry arranges two hour guided rides, half day or full day rides for individuals and groups. If you would like the full experience overnight rides with rustic accommodations at the Charit Creek Hostel (which Larry also manages) can be arranged as well. Larry knows every inch of the trails (from easy to difficult) and is a true cowboy - made of grit and courage. Larry fell in love with the land over three decades ago. He knew then that these great outdoors would offer him a playground for himself and others plus keep him satisfied with the endless trails. “Annie’s” son Grant loves Cowboy Larry. He often refers to Larry as his best “cowboy” friend ever, even though there is about fifty years difference in age! Crisp, fresh air engulfs the thousands of acres of forest. Every season is lovely. Imagine meandering down rugged trails with an experienced cowboy, lunch in your pack then sitting on a bluff overlooking some of the most scenic panoramas in the southeast. The overnight experience at Charit Creek hostel is extraordinary. The Lodge, an authentic log cabin built in 1838 by a true pioneer (a long hunter); where you can rough it overnight in the bunkhouses and have some delicious meals served by Cowboy Larry. There are two options; use their outside kitchen and cook your own meals and bring your sleeping gear or have Larry and his staff cook/grill pork loin, chicken breast or even a cowboy sirloin steak or rib eye with all the fixings. Cowboy Larry also makes some mouth watering homemade yeast rolls and the hospitality is amazing. This experience is something that is rare to find. Larry loves to share his love of the Big South Fork and to pass on the legacy of the cowboy and his horse. Boy Scout groups, church groups, groups of girl and guy friends have enjoyed many weekends experiencing the trails either by horseback or hiking down to the Charit Creek hostel/ lodge. If this is on your “bucket list” then call Cowboy Larry to arrange a trip on the best trails in the southeast and undoubtedly the best experience on the trails - overnighting at Charit Creek for some memories that will last a lifetime. Let Cowboy Larry create the perfect day outing, overnight trip or weekend away and cater to your family or your group on your budget. Southeast Pack Trips is conveniently located off of Hwy. 297 and Cowboy Larry can be contact at 931-879-2260 or visit his website, www.southeastpacktrips.com or www.charitcreeklodge.com. Spotlight on Cookeville By Jay Albrecht Albrecht Publishing Group Dale Hollow Lake offers its visitors much to do, but for those looking to get away from the water for a day, there’s a prime option just a few minutes south. Cookeville is commonly known as the “Hub City of the Upper Cumberland,” serving as the main dining, shopping and entertainment option for a large portion of the Middle Tennessee and Dale Hollow Lake region. In total, that means Cookeville often serves well over 300,000 people, despite its actual population of closer to 32,000. The city sits adjacent to Interstate 40 and Highway 111, offering outstanding transportation options in all directions. Cookeville is about 80 miles east of Nashville and 100 miles west of Knoxville. A welcome center featuring many details about the Cookeville region is located just off I-40 at 470-A Neal Street. In the early 1990s and with the passage of a liquor-by-thedrink referendum, Cookeville’s landscape greatly changed as numerous restaurants began opening. The rest is history, so to speak, as Cookeville’s streets become flooded regularly (especially on Friday and Saturday evenings) with visitors taking advantage of the many unique dining options offered, from local favorite Spankies Restaurant to several widely known chains. In addition, Cookeville’s shopping portfolio has grown, with the development of the West Jackson Street retail area as well as the continued success of the West Side District (see related story) and the downtown area. Bargain hunters can enjoy many brand-name and local stores.

If history or other cultural opportunities are your thing, then Cookeville won’t disappoint there either. With several museums, historical markers and special events to offer, Cookeville brings a one-of-its-kind quality of life to local citizens and visitors alike. Cookeville even has its own outstanding orchestra, in the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, which performs often at Tennessee Tech University. Speaking of Tennessee Tech, Cookeville would not be the same without the influence of this four-year university. TTU is now about 12,000 students strong and is often named one of the South’s best schools. From Dale Hollow Lake, Cookeville is easy to get to and you’ll enjoy the beautiful drive (see directions on next page). Whether you’re new to the Dale Hollow area or a long-time resident, you’ll want to make Cookeville a must-do stop on your itinerary. For more information about Cookeville, please call 800-264-5541 or visit www.mustseecookeville.com. Spotlight on Cookeville
By Jay Albrecht Albrecht Publishing Group One of the central dining and shopping destinations of interest in Cookeville is the historic West Side District, located primarily on West Broad Street between Walnut and Oak Avenues. West Side has long been one of Cookeville’s retail centers, having some of the oldest commercial buildings in town. In more recent years, quality restaurants such as Crawdaddy’s West Side Grill have opened to complete the area as an experience all to its own.
Shopping on the West Side offers some of the best variety of unique shops in Cookeville. From the eclectic to the contemporary, shoppers can find just about anything by strolling through the District. From the Depot Museum highlighting Cookeville’s history as a train town and antique stores to sushi and Christian-related goods, West Side truly offers many options to suit nearly all tastes. Several years ago, the West Side District came into its own with significant façade and other infrastructure improvements initiated and partially funded by the local CityScape program. Today, the active West Side Business Association of merchants ensures a promising future for one of Cookeville’s best gems. Both CityScape and the West Side Business Association help plan several events throughout the year to attract visitors to the area, including the extremely popular Wine on the West Side event held every summer, featuring several area wineries providing samples of their favorites. Take a walk on the West Side during your next trip to Cookeville – you won’t be disappointed! Find out more about Cookeville’s historic West Side District by visiting www.mustseecookeville.com/westside.php.

Big South Fork Scenic Railway
Big South Fork
railway A National Park Concessionaire
Family Railroad Adventure The Big South Fork Scenic Railway allows passengers to experience one of the last remaining company towns, with an operational railroad and reconstructed coal camp originally built during the early nineteen hundreds. The Scenic Railway is located in the National Historic District of Stearns, Kentucky, which is on the northern end of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Your family will enjoy the 16 mile round trip upon the 110 year old, Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, known as the “Route of the Painted Rocks.” This ride is full of spectacular vistas, lush vegetation and free flowing mountain streams as it descends 600 feet into the river gorge. The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and remnants from the communities that once lined the railway now serve as reminders of days gone by. Regular departures, April through October, upon the K&T Special take 3 hours and include a new section of track through the mining camp of Worley. Worley was the largest mining community along the K&T. The train makes a stop at Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp, a National Park Service outdoor interpretive site. Blue Heron was built by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company in 1937 and operated until 1962. The coal camp contains “ghost structures” and each structure has visual and oral history exhibits. Visitors’ to Blue Heron can walk into the face of the mine as well as cross over the river on the tipple bridge. The Railway offers additional experiences by taking a Cab Ride, Caboose Rental, a Rivers & Rails Package, and a new Saturday Pass for those folks that would like more time to hike and explore Blue Heron. Your ticket aboard the K&T Special also includes admission to the McCreary County Museum. The Museum is located in the Historic District and is within walking distance of the Depot. The Museum focuses on early pioneer life through the boom times of the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company. You should allow 1½ to 2 hours to spend touring the Museum as well as shopping in one of the many unique craft and gift shops in downtown Stearns. The railway has live bluegrass music in the depot half an hour before each train departs. In November, take a trip on the new “Run to the Gorge.” Enjoy riding in heated cars into the Gorge of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The November excursion will allow passengers to experience our beautiful area without the foliage. You’ll be amazed by the difference. Round trips are 1 ½ hours in length and depart rain or shine. The ticket also includes admission to the McCreary County Museum. The Big South Fork Scenic Railway has special event trains like the Haunted Hollow Express in October and the Santa Express Train in December. Many new exciting activities are planned for 2012, so be sure to visit our website for more details.

Equestrian Destinations The Dale Hollow Lake and Big South Fork National Recreation Area are two of the top trail riding destinations in the East. Hundreds of miles of trails await riders of all skill sets; even wagoneers have a variety of trails to consider. Maybe what sets these trails apart from other opportunities are the spectacular views – bluffs, rock formations, waterfalls and canyons are just some examples of the natural beauty to be uncovered. Elevation changes are common, but not too severe. Several horse camps are available along the way as well. The Big South Fork is known as the “Trail Riding Capital of the Southeast” and is just a few miles from Dale Hollow Lake. This vast natural area includes well-groomed equestrian trails to suit any rider. Companies such as East Fork Stables, Southeast Pack Trips and Cedar Creek Cattle Company (check out the ads for these companies in this guide) offer custom riding packages for interested parties. The great outdoors awaits! Camp under the stars, listen to the creatures of the night, take in the vibrant indigenous plant life, enjoy nature at its finest. If you’re looking for a fun getaway from the lake for a day, horseback riding may be just what you need. If so, you’ve come to the right place!

New Beginnings Youth Ranch New Beginnings Youth Ranch is part of Cedar Creek Cattle Company located in the Big South Fork region of Tennessee started by Mike Archambault and his Mom, Joan several years ago. The program has grown significantly and has served many. New Beginnings is changing the social landscape with their unique program for young people. Mike and Joan take a non-traditional approach to working with troubled teens and young adults and by using the mustang horses in their program. The transformation is evident in the young adults that live at New Beginnings. Through the non-traditional environment, the youth are able to learn responsibility, trust and love through the help of the wild mustangs that they adopt and commit to taking care of. Horse and people are a lot alike. They both need love, food, shelter, basic necessities and boundaries defined so they know what the rules are. This is achieved by trust, patience and consistency as these youth have a chance to break the wild mustangs of their unacceptable behaviors and transform them over time with patience. Mike and Joan have ground rules at the ranch. To live there, one has to abide by these rules. They believe in the youth, instill morals and teach them about character, the value of hard work, love of the outdoors, family, and church achieving amazing results. Many of today’s troubled teens are for the most part, the result of non-traditional homes, unstable environments, neglect, abandonment, gaming (XBOX, video games, TV and internet) and hours of time alone without their parents. Most children today do not get to play outside or don’t even know how to play in the great outdoors. New Beginnings allows the youth to help around the ranch with their adopted horse, ranch chores, and interaction with guests that are coming to Cedar Creek Cattle Company. New Beginnings has transformed many of the youth and many have gone on to help others. Mike and Joan moved into the area many years ago to operate their Black Angus cattle breeding facility. The project was larger than they anticipated causing a need for more horses to help in the maintenance. Then Mike started giving riding lessons, breaking horses and taking folks out on trail rides. Today, Cedar Creek Cattle Company can take you out on a trail or rent you horses and trailer them to East Fork Stables or other trails in the Big South Fork area. This is a great place to go horseback riding while vacationing on Dale Hollow Lake. Mike and the New Beginnings ministry have continued to expand the trails which meander through thick forest, alongside streams, and highlight some of the beautiful vegetation of the countryside. If you have never ridden or are experienced and want to take a ride, give Mike a call. Share your dream with their team. He has created a cattle drive for someone before to make his dream come true. If you have more questions about the New Beginnings youth ministry or would like to make a donation, please contact Mike through their websites: www.cedarcreekcattlecompany.com or www.newbeginningsyouthranch.com. 58
