Welcome to the second annual Lake Cumberland Visitor Guide! What fun it has been to explore this rich and exciting area full of valleys, country roads, and exciting off-the-beaten path treasures and of course the magnificent Lake Cumberland waters, the granddaddy lake of the southeast. The Burckhard family has uncovered some fabulous overnight getaways like The Doolin House Inn in downtown Somerset, Fort Wahoo in Nancy and the Hill and Valley Farms Bed and Breakfast, just a few miles from downtown Columbia, KY. Lake Cumberland is a FUN lake, with excellent fishing, family activities and lots of water. Lake Cumberland (LC) is known for its houseboating and marinas which all have their own personality and cater to the millions of visitors each year. Contrary to the media hype in years past, there is plenty of water with over 1,200 miles of rugged pristine shoreline and 50,000 acres of water. All types of water activities are enjoyed every year. LC is a very deep lake with depths of over 100 feet in some areas. The people with luxurious houseboats, pontoon boats and cruisers enjoy maneuvering the waters. This is a great place for family vacations, getaways and romantic weekends. LC is the place where southern hospitality is shown by the friendly service at the marinas and accommodations around the lake, plus at the various restaurants and lovely towns. There is so much to do on and off the water. Love water parks? SomerSplash in Somerset, KY is a great adventure water park for families of all sizes. There is a kiddie pool, fantastic daring water slide and a wave pool to excite children of all ages. The park is clean, and there are plenty of places for the parents and grandparents to sit and enjoy the summer sun, or be shaded during the heat of the day. Baxter’s Coffee and Roasting Company in Somerset is a great place to stop and get a cup of fresh roasted Baxter’s Coffee, iced coffee, a delicious smoothie or an iced drink. Their pastries are home baked and the coffee beans that come from around the world are roasted locally. The South Fork Mennonite Community in Casey County is one of the Burckhard’s favorites filled with old world charm and lots of shopping opportunities. Stop in at Sunny Valley Country Store & Bakery and stock up on spices, flavored oils, honey, sourdough bread and lunchmeats for the sandwiches on the boat or for your picnic. Pick up some of your staples, including bulk flours, sugars, cereals, cookware and utensils, plus a great line of RADA knives. The Hoover family also owns Hillside Greenhouses & Nursery that offers plants, vegetables, other produce, plus some lovely hanging planters, potted plants and herbs for your cabin and houseboat. Experience the Casey County Produce Auction every Monday, Wednesday, or Friday to buy some of the region’s finest fresh produce. Take a stroll through the South Fork Furniture store and marvel at the craftsmanship of the Amish made solid wood furniture including bedroom suites, dining room tables, end tables, TV stands and kitchen home furnishings, including my favorite - the lazy Susan made of different types of wood species perfect for arranging your honey, marmalade and jams. LC loves water events and the quest to beat the World Record Raft-Up was achieved in the summer of 2010 with over 1,651 boats tying up beating the World Record set by Lake Norman in North Carolina back on July 31, 2004. (They tied up 1,454 boats.) Everyone had so much fun beating this record, that they will do it again on LC on August 13, 2011. The LC Poker Run is also a blast whether you want to participate or just be a spectator. There is plenty to do. LC offers the perfect backdrop to leave the big city worries behind and just relax and enjoy the warm evenings, excellent scenery and summers finest. Use our LC Visitor Guide to pick out a restaurant, plan a day trip, choose a lovely cabin, houseboat or a bed and breakfast and explore this beautiful region. See why generations of families have been coming to Lake Cumberland for years creating memories. Enjoy your trip and happy summer! Fishing Lake Cumberland By Captain Jim Durham, Owner, StriperFun Guide Service
they pour into the main lake. Also, fish the river channel edges as they cross the many points on the main lake. Watch your fish finder for large schools of shad. Your live bait fishing will be pulling boats and floating balloons as bobbers, fishing shad deep from 30’-80’ - this will produce day or night. If it is at night or cloudy, always put at least one weightless shad on a balloon all the way in the back twice as far as you would normally do so. This is a proven trick to catch monster Stripers. It is extremely difficult to keep shad alive - it is hot and the shad become weak and “die on the line” shortly after deployment. OCT-DEC: In early fall, the above main lake patterns hold true. As Nov. rolls into Dec., the bait fish migrate back into the creeks. This time of year can produce terrific surface action where the creeks flow in. Huge bait fish schools are attacked by the Stripers. Many forgo down rigging and live bait fishing, willing to sit in prime areas, watching the surface with binoculars for them to “fire up”/feed. While waiting, they jig large hammered slab spoons off the bottom. When the Stripers rise and feed, they power up their engines and run to the edge of the school and throw large floating stick baits, hair jigs and vibrating baits into the schools. This can produce hot and heavy action. The down side is that sometimes the fish don’t come up. Through the rest of Dec. as the water and air temperatures drop, it is time to move all the way back into the creeks and bottom fishing techniques. Use the wind to your advantage as bait is blown into shore to large fish stacked up feeding on these “tired” shad! Meet the Captain! StriperFun Guide Service owner Capt. Jim Durham is a KY licensed guide who has fished LC year round for most of his adult life, creator of the Striper Fish Like a Pro DVD series & a line of fishing lures. Capt. Jim is also a Staff Officer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and a Coast Guard Merchant Marine Capt. He shoots Striper fishing TV shows, does nationally broadcast fishing radio shows and writes the nationally syndicated “Lake Cumberland Fishing Report”!
Lake Cumberland (LC) is over 100 miles long with over 50,000 acres of crystal clear water. It is one of the largest manmade lakes in the world and world renown for Stripers – lots of them! They have been stocked since the late 1950’s – one of the first outside South Carolina. LC is also known for other species. A little known secret is the huge Walleye that inhabit the waters! By utilizing a professional guide service, you benefit from their expertise to increase your chance of “landing the big one!” They can be a cost effective way for a group to fish (cost per fisherman). Even the pros hire guides! How to Fish Lake Cumberland for Stripers JAN-MAR: As bait fish make their annual run to the heads of the creeks, big Stripers closely follow. Large schools can be found in as little as 5’-15’ of water “way up in the creek”. Don’t let the off color/muddy water deter you. If the water is slightly stained, wind lite with minimal cloud cover, then pulling planner boards with live shad shallow can really produce. Also, throwing large plastic trailer tipped buck tail jigs or vibrating lures and floating stick baits can produce well. If it’s bright and/or windy and the water muddy, it is best to find a transition bank (rock and mud), beach/tie up your boat and throw Carolina rigged live shad out on the bottom. Be patient! This technique frequently produces massive Stripers - the muddy water lets you sneak up on them. APR-JUN: Although a fair number of quality fish will decide to live back in the creek, most schools will begin their trek out towards the main lake. In early spring, these fish move quickly, looking to feed heavy before the May spawn. Transitional mud and rock banks half way out towards the main lake are the area to target (with your shad being pulled from the surface - 20’ deep). As you move to the main lake points and transition banks, you have to fish differently than the winter pattern. The issue now will not be that the water is slightly stained or muddy. Rather, the issue is floating debris. Here, your thought process is reversed. If the wind is light or no wind, the debris makes it difficult to pull boards. On these days, it is best to find a transition bank (rock and mud), beach/tie up your boat and throw Carolina rigged live shad out on the bottom. With a medium wind that will blow the flotsam to the bank, pulling planner boards with live shad and throwing large trailer tipped buck tail jigs or vibrating lures can again produce well. You need to pull your boards “weightless” right up next to the bank, especially sheer rock walls. Main lake flats will produce with weightless shad on boards. If it is bright and/or really windy, stick to the bottom pattern. Night fishing with very large diving sick baits and hair jigs can produce tremendous stringers of fish. Try to fish near a full moon with light wind, near sheer bluff walls. JUL-SEPT: The fish are in summer pattern, schooling in deep water chasing the baitfish. You now have the choice of live bait fishing or down rigging artificial lures - either will produce. The fish will be in 30’-110’ of water. When you get a bite, it may be several rods at once. Watch your lines for hard aggressive hits from fish that are moving quickly. Follow the creek channel ledges as

Lake Cumberland Poker Run & Raft-Up The Lake Cumberland Poker Run is a can’t miss event for folks that enjoy the raw fury of loads (over 150) of the country’s meanest and fastest power boats accompanied by the fun and energy of a Mardi Gras atmosphere. The event has been ranked in the top ten by Extreme Boats Magazine as one of the best poker runs in the country. Lake Cumberland State Dock hosts the event. They also do something extraordinary – they tie up 46 of their houseboats and rent them out as “boatels” during the event. That alone makes for a great offer. There is plenty of fun to be had during this popular event. The boats will be fast, the prize money welcome, and the atmosphere will be in party mode. For more information, rules and regulations, coarse map, or to register for this year’s event which will be held September 9-11 visit online at www.lakecumberlandpokerrun.net or call them at 888-782-8336. The Lake Cumberland Raft-Up now holds the Guinness Book of World Record title for the greatest number of boats tied-up together in a continuous floating line which was achieved on August 14, 2010. It was a fun filled day on Lake Cumberland with a multitude of folks getting out on the lake to have a good time and show the world the team work and support that boaters on Lake Cumberland can put forth. Everyone had such a great time; they’ve decided to have a 2nd Annual Lake Cumberland Raft-Up to be held on August 13th, 2011. So, come on boaters, bring your boat, register, and be a part of one of the largest gatherings of boaters in the WORLD! www.LakeCumberlandRaftUp.com

Winner’s Marine NOW EVERYBODY’S HAPPY by Mike Listermann, Owner - Winner’s Marine Most women aren’t really all that fond of boating or should we say the traditional deep V fiberglass run about or small cruiser. When you think about it, it’s no wonder. For most men a day of boating is all about grabbing a few items, the wife and kids or grandkids and getting out and zooming up and down the lake, enjoying the sun and fun. However, what this looks like to the woman is stumbling over the cooler and feet in a crowded boat, pounding and pounding on wave after wave, chop after chop, banging and banging on rough water, not to mention how unsecure she feels as the boat pitches from side to side.
Manufacturing Company (visit www.avalonpontoons.com) smooth out the chop and waves that make the women so uneasy. It’s kind of like a magic carpet ride for her in today’s quality pontoon and they have a turning radius that exceeds that of most run-abouts. Plus, today’s high performance pontoon will pull a number of skiers, wake boarders and tubers plus delivers speeds of 50 MPH or more if you like. I know how the women feel because I hear it all the time from customers and personally, for me it was always a challenge getting my beautiful bride of 25 years interested in spending a day on the lake. Now that we have a high performance pontoon her attitude is one of… “Can we go out on the lake today? Can I drive the boat?” And one of the best parts is there is now room for her, the kids, the grandkids, friends and friends of friends. Today’s pontoon will seat up to 16 people, still pull skiers, tubers, etc. and you don’t have to plow the water and wait to get up on plane…you’re already up and skipping across the waves.
Truth be known, for most of us it becomes a point of contention... he wants to boat, ski, wake board, tube, cruise and have fun. She just wants to “get it over with” and get off the lake and feel safe again. Now there is a solution and it’s definitely NOT your grandfathers 2 stroke, smoking, smelly, putting, slow pontoon boat. As we get a little older, hopefully we get wiser and the babyboomer today is definitely getting wiser. Baby boomers are NOT willing to give up their lifestyle, especially when it comes to their love of the water. Baby boomers are busy people with much more recreational time on their hands…”boating time” and the solution that satisfies both mom and dad, husband and wife, parents and grandparents is today’s high performance pontoon or tri-toon boat. These high performance pontoon boats offer speed, stability, smoothness, durability and amenities that far exceed that of a more expensive, crowded fiberglass run about or small cruiser. Today’s pontoon boat, like those produced in Michigan by The Avalon

Fort Wahoo Cabin & Boat Rentals Fort Wahoo Cabin and Boat Rentals at Lake Cumberland is an awesome new resort area that offers rustic log cabin rentals in beautiful Nancy, KY - just down the road from Cave Springs Marina. Owners Daniel and Cecelia Bates fell in love with this piece of property many years ago while vacationing at Lake Cumberland. They used to ride their ATV’s and sit under the pear tree, envisioning what they might do with this wonderful piece of land. As business owners in Eastern Kentucky serving the coal industry, they pondered, planned, and eventually bought these lovely 21 acres and developed Fort Wahoo. This is truly a family business with daughter Erica Phillips managing cabin reservations and maintenance at the resort. Her husband Billy and daughter Zoe play an active role in helping with the business. Zoe loves to welcome guests when they come to “her” Fort Wahoo. Fort Wahoo got its name from when Daniel was a little boy and used to play ball. After swinging the bat and striking out or hitting the ball, the fans and family would shout “Wahoo” – giving him this nickname. This is a family paradise with four modern log cabins. Each cabin has 3 bedrooms – 1 queen bed, 1 full bed, and a loft with 2 twin beds – and still plenty of room for a few more children in sleeping bags. They also offer a fully stocked kitchen, satellite TV, and wireless internet throughout the resort. There are grills and fire pits outside the cabin perfect for roasting marshmallows and making smores. Yummm… we enjoyed several one evening while visiting with our welcoming hosts. Fort Wahoo is just minutes (less than a mile) from Cave Spring Marina (formerly known as Alligator I), and is a nice walk down to the marina. There are plenty of activities for the family, including a wonderful wooden Noah’s

Ark playground that kept my nine year old sons and Zoe happy all morning, swinging, playing tag, and ascending the climbing wall. Volleyball, basketball, and badminton courts are available to Fort Wahoo guests. They have also added, new for the upcoming season, an extra cabin with a private back deck and hot tub. There are many trails from the resort for ATV riding, hiking, and trail riding. This is a perfect place for a family reunion, girls’ getaway, family vacation, or for the guys’ hunting and fishing trip. Fort Wahoo also offers hunting and fishing packages, including an expert hunting or fishing guide, like Dan Chappel - one of the popular fishing guides at Lake Cumberland. This is a very affordable way to spend a weekend of fun and relaxation. Split the cost between four friends and this is an inexpensive spring, fall, and even winter getaway. Fishing is great on Lake Cumberland in the winter months and wildlife is abundant at Fort Wahoo with plenty of rabbits, squirrels, turkey, and deer. Fall is my favorite time of the year with blankets of color hugging the contours of the rolling hills surrounding Lake Cumberland. There is nothing better than sitting on the front porch of your cabin at Fort Wahoo, sipping a cup of your favorite hot beverage, and watching the birds and wildlife across the fields. They also offer boat rentals with a new fleet of pontoon boats with hard top decks and water slides. These can be reserved by the day or week, or put into a package deal by calling Scheduling Coordinator, Erica. Fort Wahoo is a remarkable, family friendly, safe, and truly enjoyable resort area with clean, modern, and new log cabins. Visit Fort Wahoo online or give Erica a call to arrange your vacation now. They can be visited at www.FortWahoo-LakeCumberland.com. (Tel: 859-314-3786)

Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery The Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is a must visit while you are in the Lake Cumberland area or planning a visit to the region. This premier facility is one of seventy hatcheries in the U.S. and one of the newest with a new multimillion dollar visitor center constructed in 2008. This Class A Hatchery offers fantastic interpretive exhibits that promote a better understanding and appreciation of the natural history, resources, and the aquatic habitat in Kentucky. Their emphasis is on promoting the environment and recreational fishing to the public, plus highlighting the different species of fish, wildlife, and habitat found in our waterways. This is the largest cold water fish hatchery in the state of Kentucky and the third largest in the country. When the Wolf Creek Dam was constructed for flood control and energy production, and Lake Cumberland was created, the federal government realized that they disrupted, and in some cases eliminated the native species of the river and totally changed the fish habitat. In order to mitigate this, the fish hatchery was built to provide healthy trout species - including rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout and others - to supply the Cumberland River and other waters across Kentucky. The Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery raises over a million fish every year and releases them at various stages of development. They receive over 2 million eggs, which take about sixteen to eighteen months to reach optimum size for release. The 64 raceways that they have separate the fish into different stages of their growth. Visitors may visit the raceways to observe the development. If you come at the right time, you might be able to assist them with feeding. They release the fish when they are around 9-10” long and transport them all across Kentucky in special custom made trucks. The Cumberland River,

just below the dam, is known to be a premier trout stream - one of the best east of the Mississippi. Many folks come from all over to catch these healthy fish. One of the biggest events at the Wolf Creek National Hatchery is their annual CATCH A RAINBOW Kids Fishing Derby day. This is a free event with lots of activities centered on catching rainbow trout. One of the largest events of its kind in the country, this event is a real hit! Over 1,650 children participated in the event last year, with activities, fishing assistance, and prizes for all. Everything is free due to the generosity of their many sponsors and The Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc. The non-profit Friends group is an integral part of the programs at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. Its mission is to promote fishing and environmental education through various activities and programs. They also operate a very successful gift shop with t-shirts, books, souvenirs, and fishing licenses, fishing tackle, along with the widest assortment of environmental educational materials in the region. This is a great facility to bring a school or church group, women’s club outing, the family, or to hold an educational seminar. With over 100,000 visitors per year, this exceptional fish hatchery offers a great environment for learning, helps us to appreciate the habitat around us, plus take responsibility of protecting our future and the environment that we live in. Admission to the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is free and they are open year round – only closed on Christmas day. The hours of operation are January to April from 8:00 AM4:00 PM, May to October from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, and November to December from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. They can be contacted at 270-343-3797. Papa “Osa” - Jerry Tucker misses his wife every minute, but knows that she is watching and smiling as her ministry continues (which now requires over three million dollars per year to take care of the over 50 children, many who have been with them for twenty years and need 24/7 care). Sandy and Jerry never wanted any pity or sorrow for their children. These children are God’s children and are special in so many ways. Their motto is “Faith, Hope and Room for One More.” The Tucker family and those who work with them are blessed beyond measure and the ministry, although tough and challenging, has brought so much pure joy, peace and fulfillment to all that serve. They know that they are serving the Lord and taking care of His children that so need unconditional love, hope and care. They also started the “Angel House Ministry” many years ago. This ministry takes care of babies that are born to incarcerated women. They take the babies home from the hospital and care for them until their mothers are released from prison. There are anywhere between a dozen to two dozen infants and toddlers there. They encourage the mothers to see their children every Thursday when the bus visits the prison. These Angel ladies who care for the infants are either paid staff or volunteers who love the children like they were their own. Most of the furniture, clothing, toys, and books are donated items and the love for these little ones is overflowing! The Galilean Children’s Home has cared for hundreds of children and have adopted over 32 of them - some are bed bound, yet others are allowed to work at the Bread of Life Café and Gift Shop. The Bread of Life Café and Gift Shop is the ministry’s wonderful café which serves delicious home-cooked meals. They have a great hot and cold buffet with their signature butter yeast rolls that are as big as a small dinner plate! They almost always have fish on the buffet, including my favorite, fried catfish on Fridays! Their
Abdul Samad from Afghanistan came to the United States in March of 1990 for surgery to his arms that had been blown up in a land mine in his home country. The turmoil in his country had left young Abdul an orphan at a very young age. At the age of ten, via Pakistan he came to the US for more medical treatment. He was adopted in 1990 by a kind, loving and selfless couple, Jerry and Sandy Tucker, founders of the Galilean Children’s Home, located in Liberty, Kentucky (in 1986). This non-profit organization cares for children from all over the world that have been abused, neglected, rejected, are in need of medical treatment, mother’s are in prison, come from politically ravaged countries or are placed here for a Christian education. The Home relies on donations from the public and fundraisers for their support. Founders Jerry and his late wife, Sandy Tucker moved to Kentucky in the 1980’s. They believe that “there is always room for one more”. Their ministry has cared for over 800 children, babies and adults over the last 30 years. The matriarch Sandy Tucker passed away in 2007 following a long battle with cancer. She is often referred to as the “Mother Teresa of Kentucky” or “the Southeast”. The Tucker’s biological daughters Becky and Jessica miss their Mom and shortly after her death wondered how they would fill her footsteps. Growing up in mission work- caring for neglected, abused and handicapped children was the norm. So, today Becky and Jessica, their husbands and children have

These trips have been a huge hit with outdoorsmen from around the country. There are plenty of places to walk, hike or get out and enjoy the community – plus you’re not far from Lake Cumberland if you want to spend some time on the water. Jerry & Sandy also started the Galilean Christian School in 1987 out of their basement. Today, the school boasts of over 75 students utilizing the Alpha Omega curriculum. The students that attend this school learn about the foundation of the bible, their faith and obtain a broad and diverse education through caring teachers. There are many activities, like the science fair that the fourth graders were celebrating the day that the Burckhard family visited the school. It is hard to describe the love, faith and honor of this special family and those who work with them. Visit the Bread of Life and arrange to have a tour of the Galilean Children’s Home. It will change your life and help you realize we are here to serve the Lord. Many that do will volunteer their time or donate to this worthwhile ministry. See why legend Charlie Daniels is one of their largest annual contributors and why former (then) President George H. W. Bush honored Sandy Tucker (for her unselfish love and ministry that touched and saved so many) at the White House in 1992 with the prestigious Points of Light Foundation Volunteer Service Award. You can visit online at www.galileanhome.org or by phoning, 606-787-5120. Give a little, give a lot and make a difference in this ministry. You can reach the Bread of Life Café at 606-787-6110. salad bar is exceptional with fresh produce, many items not found on most salad bars, and the “fixins”, as they say down here in the south, include some yummy things like fried okra, pinto beans, homemade cobbler, green beans, corn and many other delicious sides. The Tucker family all work side-by-side and many of the children they have adopted contribute by bussing tables, folding the real cloth red checkered napkins or by washing dishes. This restaurant has room for large bus/tour groups/church groups and has private meeting rooms for small and large gatherings. Their front entrance reminds you a little of Cracker Barrel. Here you will find a large selection of gifts, handcrafted items, baby gifts, Leaning Tree greeting cards, note cards, calendars, candles and so much more. You will also find homemade jams, jellies, daily made sourdough bread, sausage made at the Tucker farm, organic butter, cheeses and homemade fudge (with free tastes)! In addition to the Bread of Life Cafe and Gift Shop bringing in revenue and jobs for their children and ministry, Jerry Tucker and children also run the Trading Post in Liberty, and the Horse and Buggy Inn, a wonderful bed and breakfast log cabin tucked away in the South Fork Community. The Inn is a great place to stay anytime. They enjoy their many guests. The rustic four bedroom log cabin B&B is tucked away among the pastures of cows, horses, and wildlife. It is well appointed with lovely furnishings which will delight those that choose to stay. Be sure to take time to enjoy a soak in the beautiful claw foot tub. It is so inviting. Continental breakfast is provided or there are plenty of restaurants in the area, including the Bread of Life Café. Hunters, if you are looking for a great place to hunt, Becky’s cousin Joey

On a Saturday, you can see the visitors loading up their carts with the staples that every kitchen needs. The Burckhard family gave up all artificial sweeteners and white sugar a few months ago. We now buy our 3 lb. bag of raw cane sugar every few weeks when we visit this wonderful Mennonite community. This is a perfect place to come if you want a “mile high” made-to-order sandwich made on their homemade sourdough bread. The young lady will fix the sandwich to your individual liking. The deli has an awesome selection of meats and cheeses allowing you to choose your favorites along with the type of condiments you would like as well as lettuce, tomato, pickle etc. If you are having a picnic, gathering on your boat, cabin or at your campsite, this is an ideal place to pick up a sandwich or deli platter (call ahead). method. Visiting Misty Mountain Sales reminds you of what it was like before the big box stores like Wal-Mart came along or a century ago when the main variety, general merchandise store was the place that the town/community bought all of their merchandise other than fresh produce to sustain their family. They would shop maybe once a week, or for some, several times a year to buy a pair of shoes, a new dress or some fabric to sew their own outfits for themselves and/or their children. The activity on a Saturday, exhibits this type of commerce and the small town community spirit that is still alive and well in the South Fork Mennonite Community. There is lots of room in the parking lot for modern cars, and also a place to tie up a horse and buggy. They are open from Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays and can be reached at 606787-0404. Hillside Greenhouses & Nursery, LLC is a sprawling greenhouse and nursery in the South Fork Community, also owned and operated by the Hoovers. They offer a wide variety of plants, flowers, herbs and hanging baskets. They also have a large selection of fresh produce, fresh fruits and farm fresh eggs. They have the widest selection of plants in general that I have ever seen including an excellent selection of peppers, tomatoes and herb plants. If you like to make homemade hot sauce or salsa, this is the place to come to get your plants. They have over 80 different tomato varieties and some of the coolest pepper plants in the Southeast. Some examples of the varieties they carry are Tabasco, Sweet Havana, chili, and pimento peppers to name a few. They also carry what is probably the largest array of herbs in the region including stevia, roman chamomile, patchouli, lemon verbena, curry, several types of basil and more. Paul takes after his father and moves speedily from one business to another. He loves the greenhouse and nursery business. His wife and children mind the store when he is not there. They are able to assist you with questions about planning a garden from the novice level gardener to the more experienced. The produce offered is mostly grown locally by the Hoovers and other families in the community and the fruit that they do bring in is of the highest quality. They have the best watermelons, melons and berries (in season) and there is nothing better on a hot summer day than to bite into a succulent watermelon or to make a big bowl of fresh fruit salad with some delicious fruit dip. Do you feel like a “Yard Crasher” moment to spruce up your landscape? Are you planting a garden either in the ground or container? Do you want to have some flowering hanging baskets to brighten up your porch area? Come to Hillside Greenhouses & Nursery to buy their healthy plants. Come visit and see why this is the best kept secret in the region and spend the day exploring. They are here to serve you and welcome your visit. Call them at 606-787-4509. Enjoy your visit and make sure that you tell Paul and family that “Annie” sent you.
Misty Mountain Sales is another Hoover enterprise. It is a great general merchandise store that is a mainstay in this bustling Mennonite community. Misty Mountain Sales has everything from clothing, shoes, hats, fabrics, kitchenware and utensils to tools, wood stoves, furniture and more. You can find an excellent selection of handcrafted quilts hanging up on the walls sewn by many of the talented ladies of the community. They have a great selection of cast iron skillets, measuring cups, spoons and some handy cotton dish rags. “Annie” picked up some of the dish rags on a recent trip. These are the best I have ever used and wash so well. They also have my favorite “Leaning Tree” cards, notepads and writing tablets that are so nice to send to a loved one or friend. The selection of wood stoves will allow you to choose the appropriate heating method for your cabin or home plus they can give some expert advice on choosing the appropriate heating

South Fork Furniture South Fork Furniture is “the” place to go to buy high quality, hand crafted, authentic Amish made furniture. This “Made in America” solid wood furniture showcases the natural cherry, walnut, brown maple, oak, and elm woods that come from the forests of the southeastern United States. The Hiemstra family moved to the area several years ago to get away from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. They settled in the idyllic South Fork Mennonite community near Lake Cumberland following prayerful consideration. They felt that God was leading them to this wonderful area of Casey County, KY where they bought a store and have been serving grateful clients ever since. Sipke born and raised in the Netherlands loves the countryside and the simple way of life, as well as, the natural beauty and the traditions of this wonderful community. Wife Faye and children work alongside Sipke. They have a wonderful, sprawling 5,000 square foot showroom heated with a great wood stove that keeps the place nice and toasty during the fall and winter months. It is an excellent place to keep pots of water boiling for tea. There is a wide variety of merchandise including many different styles of dining room suites that seat 6, 8 and even 12 for large family gatherings in traditional, country and contemporary, plus they do custom orders. They have some very unique, custom made TV stands that showcase your flat screen TV with all the drawers, sliding doors and cubbies for your DVD’s, gadgets, receivers, etc. so that everything is tucked neatly out of the way. South Fork Furniture also has a wide array of bedroom suites including the “Annie” favorite - a wonderful contemporary bedroom suite combining two of my favorite woods - maple and walnut. Sipke and Faye are looking forward to their expansion plans to build a new facility with more showroom space, better lighting and expanding their collection to include upholstered items handcrafted to their collection. They have a seemingly endless selection of coffee tables, stacking end tables, pie safes and Hoosier cabinets. Their solid wood furniture is built to last for a lifetime and their slogan is “Today’s quality furniture becomes tomorrow’s family

heirloom.” There is an array of items to complement any cabin, home or houseboat including hand made cedar hope chests, handy lazy Susan’s perfect for a kitchen table or to hold spices, olive oil, vinegars or condiments when having a cook-out. The hand crafted baskets that the Gingrich family of Ohio hand weaves are unique in that each family member signs and dates each basket. There are hand-woven rugs and table runners made out of remnant upholstery selvages, including heart shaped table runners. One of Grant’s favorite items are the hand made wooden toys including wooden toy train sets, ingenious wooden games and the wonderful, colorful lollipop tree that takes a marble down a myriad of flat wooden boards, clacking and dropping to the bottom of the tree. There are several sizes of this fun wooden toy. The craftsmanship in the furniture is evident not only in the sturdiness of the pieces but also in the “lock in place” workmanship in the drawers. The drawers have a solid feel and glide in and out very smoothly. This reminds me of my multigenerational family in southern Germany, where woodworking and furniture making have been in the Neubrand family for years. Since the passing of my Uncle Werner several years ago, my cousin Frank continues in the business. He is now doing custom work for families building in London, alongside his workspace where he makes “Umweltfreundlich” furniture (environmentally sound). Come by South Fork Furniture and let Sipke and Faye warm you with their beautiful smiles and hospitality. It’s a great place to buy a true “Made in America” piece of furniture, accessory for your cabin or home, or purchase a special gift. There are a number of great gifts including the famous Candleberry candles, corn hole games and their new line of garden furniture. Take a drive to South Fork Furniture and enjoy the sights and sounds of the country along with the wonderful ambience of this family store. Happy Travels! South Fork Furniture can be visited online at www.SouthForkFurniture.com or give them a call today at 606-706-7722. Happy Shopping!

Spotlight on Casey County Casey County Produce Auction is located in the picturesque South Fork Mennonite Community conveniently located off of Hwy. 127 in Casey County, KY. This great auction takes place every every Monday and Wednesday at 2:00PM and Thursday at 5:00PM (EST) to auction off local produce, vegetables, fruits and flowers. This is a great place if you are canning, making jams and jellies or freezing fresh vegetables for the winter to come. Here you can buy some of the best produce and vegetables - much of it grown by the local Mennonite and Amish Communities. The Hoover family, Mervin and (son) Paul, started out small with the idea of an auction to help their local neighbors sell their wares. It has grown into a large weekly event for the local community and surrounding county farmers to bring their harvest to sell the freshest produce available (a lot picked that morning or the day before). They have a huge purpose built auction area that shelters the auction from inclement weather with another large area for folks to also sell livestock, hay, farm equipment, parts and accessories, and furniture during their amazing twice a year consignment auction. Here you can find almost anything and everything and the activity is astounding. The spring event that the Burckhard family visited had three auctioneers going simultaneously with one auctioning off large items, furniture, farm implements, farm tools and motors and such. Paul Hoover was busy auctioning off little items from cleaning supplies, lawn and farm fertilizers to household accessories. The gentleman auctioneer in the back of the area was selling lots of goats, calves, a pig, rabbits and chickens. There were a dozen or so wagons tied up to the horse posts, as many come by horse and buggy or wagon. For those interested in a day trip, this is a great place to come to watch the ambitious auctioneers, the children and families. The community children are so well behaved. They all take care of each other and are so polite with their bright eyes and lovely smiles. This auction assists a lot of families with their livelihood, plus those buying the merchandise get the freshest produce at a great price. There are also tables of ladies selling sourdough breads, fried apple and peach pies, whoopee pies and many baked goods. They also sell fresh farm cheeses and fresh donuts. If you are hungry, no problem, they are set up to feed the visitors and vendors. The large kettle barbecue grills are smoking with barbecue chicken quarters, pork and sometimes local farmraised beef. The Auction is a must see while you are visiting Lake Cumberland or passing through the region. After this event, drive down the road for more of the South Fork Community where

King’s Department Store King’s Department Store is an authentic family department store that opened their doors for business back in 1946 (65 years ago) in the same location as today. Four generations have been part of this business. They are located in picturesque Liberty, KY and offer a large selection of name brand clothing for the entire family (the largest selection of blue jeans in the area including LEVI, LEE, and CARHARTT, in sizes 28-60 – plus CARHARTT coats, bibs, shirts, and more), shoes (brands such as MUCK boots, Georgia, Durango, Carhartt, Rocky, and Red Wing Shoes), t-shirts, caps, hats, belts, and suspenders, plus fabrics & notions at VERY reasonable prices. You’re invited to step back in time and enjoy a real shopping experience. King’s isn’t like the big box stores that most people frequent today. The King family has offered quality merchandise at fair pricing, with great customer service and a friendly atmosphere for many years and continue to do so today. Founder H.R. King started the business this way and now his sons, David and Jerry carry on this family tradition. QUILTERS TAKE NOTE: David and Jerry’s mother was an avid quilter. She emphasized to her sons the importance of fabric. She always told them “You boys make sure you have plenty of fabric,” says Jerry. They still do too – over 3,000 bolts, plus a wide selection of embroidery floss, pre-cut quilt block kits (that they manufacture through their sister company – Quilt King Products - and they have a catalog if you can’t make it in), fat quarters, quilting patterns and templates, sewing baskets, batting (another product of Quilt King Products), backing, and many other notions and supplies not always found in other stores. Mrs. King would be so pleased. They have a quilters’ paradise. Quilters and crafters from all over consider King’s their little “secret”. Customers have come from as far away as England to purchase fabric and notions at King’s. This is truly a DESTINATION for folks that love quilting and sewing. Visit King’s Department Store in downtown Liberty, KY where you, quality, value and variety are KING! They are located at 556 Middleburg St. in downtown Liberty and are open 8:30AM5:00PM (EST) Monday thru Saturday, closed on Sunday. You can reach them by phone at 606-787-6688.

Annie’s Travels and Treasures Stop, Pause and Pray, seems to be a very simple command. However, if you really think about this saying, how many of us stop, pause and pray every day? Sometimes it takes devastating news, financial ruin or the loss of someone to cause us to stop, pause and pray. For Phillip Blevins, this church represents his moment of truth - realizing what path his life had been on and how stopping, pausing and praying to the Lord made a pivotal difference in his life. You see, Phillip Blevins was a very likeable guy and a good businessman in town, but he had a drinking problem. His testimony talks about how years of smoking; swearing and drinking brought him to his knees and a newfound faith. Hundreds of thousands pass this little church daily — on their way to Conley Bottom, home, or while on a road trip around these wonderful scenic roads. They see this little church and it is bound to stir curiosity in many. This little church is so very small but with incredible meaning for Phillip and so many others. The church is big enough for prayer and meditation and to make a statement about FAITH. On this site many years ago, a church was built by Charlie and Zona Blevins and Zona’s parents, David and Anne Harris on their farmland. Lots of sacrifice was made to build this church. Lots of homemade jams, jellies, candy, pies and handmade quilts were made and sold to raise the funds to build the original structure. In later years the church was

destroyed by fire. The new church building was dedicated back to the Blevins and Harris families in 1999. Phillip corrected the road he was traveling down when he found out he was very sick and had to have yet another heart operation. Lying on the operating table, he saw a tunnel, a bright light and dark gates and realized that he needed to become obedient and trust in the Lord instead of his bottle. In this humble church, you will find Phillip’s prayer on the wall which asks the Lord for the opportunity to serve Him and to ask for His forgiveness. The prayer goes like this; Father I thank You for the opportunity to serve you with this church house on the farm. I thank you for watching over me for many years when I was not willing to serve you. I thank you for giving me a second chance on life when I had heart surgery for the second time and was not expected to live. Father I thank you for giving me a family that stood by me when I was not the husband and father I should have been. Father I pray that you take this little church house here on the farm and use it to glorify your name and draw others to you so that they may know the peace that I know in my heart. Father I pray this prayer in the name of our “Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Amen. Time is a precious gift and it is in our power to stop, pause and pray. Turn off the blackberry or smart phone and step into this little church house. Thank the Lord for what gifts you have and give Him the praise and the glory that He so richly deserves. Enjoy some quiet time and know that less is more. Stop by Phillip’s church and feel His presence. Happy Trails!

Annie’s Travels and Treasures Lee’s Ford Resort Marina is a beautiful marina on Lake Cumberland loaded with history. Back during the Civil War, the Lee’s Ford area was called the Upper Ford – and the site where a lengthy battle took place in early December 1861. The battle ended abruptly with the Confederates successfully fending off Union troops. Years later, before the lake was impounded by the Corps of Engineers to create a water supply for the region, the road leading to Somerset ran through the rich land owned by the Lee family. The Lee family farm was the only place to cross over (ford) the creek prior to the lake formation; hence the name “Lee’s Ford” was established. Today, Lee’s Ford is one of the largest marinas on the lake offering over 1,000 boats slips, seasonal cottages, pontoon and ski boat rentals, and have the recreational PWC’s for rent. Lee’s Ford has an excellent restaurant called the “Harbor Restaurant & Tavern.” This restaurant has a panoramic view of the harbor. Diners delight in the views, atmosphere and delicious food. The expansive menu is outstanding. So much so, the restaurant was recently named as one of the “101 Must Places to Eat In Kentucky” by Southern Living Magazine. Some of the favorites include the famous hand breaded grouper sandwich and the Portobello mushroom sandwich. Harbor Restaurant grills an awesome steak! They use USDA certified Angus, mid-western grain fed beef that is aged for 21 days to give it a very tender and flavorful savor. Appetizers are a favorite on the menu. Those include the grouper fingers, southern fired banana peppers and the Portobello mushroom fries. The Burckhard boys really enjoyed the hand breaded chicken tenders! Blake devoured a delicious all beef hamburger – putting a huge smile on his face. Harbor Restaurant and Tavern offers homemade desserts including a deep dish apple pie, decadent brownie cake with hot fudge and ice cream and a delicious good ole southern blackberry cobbler served warm with vanilla ice cream. They serve all their drinks in the popular and handy Lee’s Ford Marina plastic tumblers. Beverages served include their delicious Harbor Iced Tea served in these souvenir cups that many house boaters, boaters and campers use to serve refreshing drinks all summer. There is a great ambience at the Harbor Restaurant either in the tavern area or in the dining area. Expansive outside patio decks allow for casual dining, weddings, private parties and special events. The views are outstanding and a perfect backdrop for any gathering. Lee’s Ford is a family marina with lots of activities all year long. They love to celebrate different holidays with their favorite being Christmas in July, where a lot of boaters decorate for Christmas and have a parade showing off their talents. They also have a fun, ghostly Halloween party where many of the boat owners participate. There is plenty of activity at the tavern, with their flat screen TV’s throughout, even in the individual booths, telecasting all major sporting events. The tavern area boasts of an old antique bar that was salvaged from the Old West. Legend has it that “Jesse James” and “Billy the Kid” sat at the bar. The floors are original. The atmosphere and decoration are very nautical and quite comfortable. Lee’s Ford has an excellent ships store, including popular souvenir items, great gifts including Vera Bradley purses, handbags, tote bags, eyeglass cases and many more summer items from which to choose. Lee’s Ford is very kid friendly. They have a

couple of kid friendly playgrounds, tennis courts and they celebrate Kid’s Day with face painting and many other activities. Lee’s Ford is conveniently located about four miles from town. It is an excellent place to vacation, day trip or eat at “one of the favorite restaurants in Kentucky” as written about in Southern Living Magazine. Lee’s Ford is truly a story about the south that reflects on the war, growth and development in Southern Central Kentucky. Come see why so many families have made Lee’s Ford their vacation destination of choice for so many generations! Tarter Gate Manufacturing Company of Dunnville, KY is the backbone of Casey County. You could say that they are one of the strongest, financially sound and diverse companies in agribusiness. They are the world’s largest manufacturer of farm, ranch and animal management equipment. C.V. Tarter founded the Tarter Gate Company in 1940 without a sawmill. They started out buying local lumber and making the gates with hand tools. Son, Roger, 17 at the time, didn’t have a penny for his pocket, but had a 1930 Model A Ford that was paid for. When 32 wooden gates were finished, Roger would load them in his truck and peddle them around the Bluegrass area. The first Tarter wooden gates cost between $2.50 $3 each depending on the quantity purchased. Between 1943 and 1946, Roger left the family business to serve in the Air Force during WWII, yet the family business flourished. No steel gates could be manufactured during this period, due to the rationing of gasoline; however, the Tarter wooden gate business grew all over Kentucky and in to Ohio and Indiana. Roger and his wife, Vivian, bought the entire gate business from his Dad in 1948 for $7,000. By the 1950’s, he had half dozen men or so peddling gates in five states. The men left loaded with gates. When they returned after selling all of the gates, Vivian would reimburse them for their expenses, and they would pay for their gates - the rest would be their profit. Tarter Gate then ventured into the “can’t-sag” gate, which had steel uprights with wooden panels. This became their best seller out of state until 1968. Then they went into the all-steel spot-welded panel gate. In the early 70’s, they started making tubular gates - buying their own steel and eventually putting in their own tube mill. The most interesting part of the history of Tarter Gate is the matriarch behind the company, Vivian Tarter. She recently left her legacy behind with her passing on February 18th, 2011 at the age of 85 years. Ms. Vivian was the backbone of Tarter Gate, the Tarter family and the community of Dunnville. Casey County’s local newspaper referred to her passing as losing “their Steel Magnolia”. They gave tribute to her integrity, honesty, passion, compassion and amazing business sense. Ms. Vivian worked alongside her husband Roger - ten hours a day, five days a week. She was always there from 6:30AM until 4:30PM and liked to sit in the front office allowing her to keep an eye on all the comings and goings. She was referred to as a shrewd, yet very fair businesswoman. She was kind, compassionate and had a great knack for listening. The employees over the years shared their challenges, fears, and comforting them in times of loss and rejoiced 41

Annie’s Travels and Treasures with them at the birth of a child, grandbaby or marriage. Ms. Vivian dealt with the Japanese in the early 70’s when Tarter Gate first started importing steel for their new steel gates. For those businesswomen that have traveled abroad, especially to Asia during the early 70’s, know this was quite extraordinary. Ms. Vivian was an exceptional lady, knowing how to deal with foreign businessmen, salesmen, gate halers and politicians. She handled every situation with grace, business acumen and diplomacy if needed. Ms. Vivian worked almost up to the day she died, being admitted to the local hospital on February 12th. She is sorely missed by her two sons, Donald and David, their wives and children. Tarter Gate not only has a deep history in the Dunnville community and the surrounding region, but employs over 700 individuals in Kentucky and at their Tarter Gate West manufacturing facility in Utah. Today, Tarter Gate has expanded their products to include farm, ranch and animal management equipment and was the official provider of the equine & livestock management equipment during the World Equestrian Games held in Kentucky in 2010. There is tremendous loyalty and pride among the Tarter employees. Many have been with the company 25 years of more, some that started with Ms. Vivian and her husband. Founder, Roger passed away in 1988. He and his love, Ms. Vivian, believed that to be successful, you must be willing to hustle, work hard and believe that you are going to be able to do the task at hand. They were strong believers in setting and achieving goals, plus you had to be willing to take chances. Tarter Farm and Ranch today distributes worldwide and their products can be found at many major retailers, local farm supply dealers and specialists. Baxter’s offers a deliciously smooth breakfast blend, a dark robust Ethiopian coffee, plus many other blends and single bean coffees with diverse aromas and tastes. One of the favorites is a Hawaiian macadamia nut coffee which is delicious hot or splendid as an iced coffee. There is a Coffee of the Day, fresh baked muffins, cookies and scones plus some delicious iced coffees. They have a trendy store with lots of gifts for coffee lovers including the European Bodum brand that brews a great cup of coffee. There are also t-shirts, coffee mugs, home accessories and so much more. Terri says that the original Baxter’s has the “Cheers” community home time feel and the new south store has a trendy young feel - great for the college students in town. There is also a Baxter’s in the hospital. All have wireless capabilities for your laptop computer. This is truly a family business and mom Terri is so proud of Jay and her daughters - Lauren and Ann. Startbucks tried to come in a few years ago. They quickly learned who the experts in coffee were and who the well known and respected baristas were in Somerset. Funny it wasn’t Starbucks, but family owned Baxter’s. Starbuck’s is no longer in Somerset and Baxter’s continues to serve up delicious coffee and fresh roasted high quality coffees by the pound. They can also put together some awesome gift baskets for birthday and welcome baskets. Make sure to go by Baxter’s and get a coffee to go or sit, relax and sip a coffee while reading your newspaper, checking your emails or visiting with a friend. Make sure to tell Terri, Jay, Lauren or Ann that “Annie” sent you. Bon Appetite and Happy Sipping! Remember, Baxter’s has three locations in Somerset to conveniently serve you. Baxter’s Coffee in Somerset, KY is an excellent example of small-town America’s entrepreneurial spirit. Terri Tuttle started her business in the mid 1990’s running a successful video and ice cream store - at a time when video stores were the trend. Terri loved coffee but couldn’t find a coffee in town that she liked. Starbucks hadn’t set up shop yet, so she decided to buy a single head espresso machine and Baxter’s was born. About the time that she started with the coffee business, her son Jay was in college. When he returned to Somerset after his schooling was completed, they decided to take Baxter’s to the next level and began roasting their own coffee beans. Today, Baxter’s has three locations in Somerset - including the hospital. They supply wonderful coffee to thousands of loyal coffee drinkers every week. Roasting coffee beans is an art. Jay and his mom, Terri, strive to learn as much as possible from their broker and from various trips to coffee bean farms. They roasted their first batch of coffee beans on October 28th, 2009. It took about 13 minutes and they have some of the original beans on display in their roasting area. The coffee beans are imported from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Brazil, Sumatra, Ethiopia and other parts of the world. The decadent beans are grown in what is called “The Bean Belt” which is close to the equator where the altitude is just right. (The beans are grown at specific altitudes because altitude affects the taste of the beans.) When the beans are roasted in their special roaster, they lose about 10-15% of their DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC
The Doolin House Inn is a premier inn located in the heart of the downtown Historic District of Somerset, Kentucky. This gourmet bed and breakfast is a perfect place to celebrate an anniversary weekend, indulge in a girls’ getaway or if you want to spend a quiet weekend away from the hustle and bustle. Innkeepers Allison Hahn Sobieck and husband Charles (Chuck) Sobieck took a great leap of faith when they purchased the exquisite “Doolin” house on what is referred to as “Harvey’s Hill” in downtown Somerset. Allison and Charles met and fell in love while attending the Sullivan Culinary School in Louisville, Kentucky. Allison knew that she wanted to move back to her hometown of Somerset someday. They also fell in love with the lifestyle of a bed and breakfast. It would allow them to blend their culinary talents and hospitality skills to meet people, plus allow them to be with their children while raising their family. When Allison spotted this dilapidated house on “Harvey’s Hill” built by Doctor H.S. Doolin, she knew that this was her dream come true and that they would restore it to its original glory. What 42

Annie’s Travels and Treasures started out as a renovation project, ended up being a true rebuild project — from the ground up. This reproduction of the original Somerset home built in the 1850’s stands proudly on Harvey’s Hill. Today, The Doolin House is truly spectacular with a restaurant sized kitchen, elegant dining room, parlor, comfortable library and inviting porches and balconies throughout the home. The custom built-in cabinetry (built by Allison’s Dad) throughout the home, especially in the library, gives it a rich warm feel. Allison is a gorgeous, elegant lady (inside and out) who loves to pamper her guests and make them feel truly special. Each guest is treated to a fully cooked breakfast, and dinners can be arranged. Charles is a master chef and loves to create some incredible dishes. He delights his guests with gourmet foods with a home cooked touch. Themed dinners, group dinners and special dinners for two can be arranged and are very popular. The weekend that we were there, they were busy preparing for a large Easter meal. The Doolin House has five guestrooms, all with queen size beds and private en suite bathrooms - some with whirlpools. The rooms are all named after a famous Kentucky race horse. They each have their own character, interior touches and are spacious and comfortable. Each room has its own 42” flat screen TV and the home is Wi-Fi enabled so that laptops can receive internet service. Guests can check in after 3:00 PM and complimentary soft drinks and water are available. The rooms have some special amenities like high quality five star style, terry spa robes and Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries. The gourmet breakfast served to the guests varies seasonally and might include such fare as crab cakes Benedict with fresh hollandaise sauce and homemade bacon. Another favorite entrée is the delectable stuffed French toasts with cream cheese and an orange marmalade that blends the sweet and the sour to create a delightful combination of flavors. Special dinners can be arranged and are available conditionally. The Doolin House is also a perfect place for special events like weddings, small business meetings, baby showers or parties. Their catering business - 2 Chef’s Catering can create the perfect meal for your event. The Doolin House is wheelchair accessible with an elevator and a handicapped accessible room for ease of comfort. This is truly an incredible place filled with charm, elegance and the tradition of southern hospitality. Come to The Doolin House for a memorable weekend, or enjoy a meal and experience the wonderful atmosphere that The Doolin House offers. Let Allison and Charles treat you like one of their family members. You might even see their two lovely children, Julian or Rae Elisabeth helping or in the background with Mom and Dad. For more information on The Doolin House, please visit their website, www.doolinhouse.com or phone 606-678-9494 or follow their cooking classes and special events on their Facebook page. individual luxurious rooms - each with its own theme like “The Bubble Tub Room”, “The Aloha Room” or “The Birdwatcher Room”. Some of the rooms have a queen size bed others have a king size bed, all with high thread count sheets on awesome mattresses and their own private bathroom. Each room also has its own flat-screen TV with satellite service. All rooms are accessible to the downstairs living area which includes a very modern and fully stocked kitchen with a lovely living area and dining room. Now “Annie” loves to cook and entertain. Her wheels began turning when she saw the endless possibilities for entertaining family and friends in this lovely farmhouse! Opening cupboards, drawers and closets, she was well pleased. Enough silverware and plates to serve in style with a beautiful buffet full of linens, cutlery and fine china for family gatherings! The Hill and Valley Farms serve a very large complimentary continental breakfast with fresh fruit, cereals, fresh juice and milk - already there when you arrive. There is plenty of room to relax on the wraparound porch. One side is adorned with Adirondack lawn furniture and the other side with an old antique church or school bench either perfect for reading a book, watching the birds or just giving thanks! Now, owner Chris kept telling Terry to make sure that the Burckhards checked out the barn across the lane. This was no simple barn, but a gorgeous red barn with a grand entrance and a side entrance with four bay garage doors plus many other features. Entering the barn was like walking into a candy store for the whole family. There was a full size kitchen for entertaining, air hockey, and basketball court for the boys, pool and ping pong tables with lots of room for family reunions and other gatherings, small business and training retreats, birthday parties, anniversaries and family vacations! The Red Barn Event Rental facility is awesome. Upstairs, we discovered a modern 30 seat, multi-media room with a 92” inch flat screen TV, and comfy green leather chairs perfect for watching a movie, sporting event or great for training or a presentation from your computer. The Burckhard boys were so happy. They played basketball, corn hole and dreamed about watching the Super Bowl on this huge flat screen TV with a bowl of popcorn or some chicken wings. The house and barn sit on Chris’ 100 acre working farm. There are plenty of places to walk, stroll, ride bikes and skateboard or rip stick. While we were strolling along the lane, I challenged Grant and Blake to find a four leaf clover. Lucky Blake found one in about sixty seconds! He was smiling ear to ear and said he must have the “luck of the Irish.” We pressed the lucky four leaf clover in my journal and went off to lovely downtown Columbia for a delicious Mexican meal at Pueblos Mexicana Grill. They served the tastiest homemade salsa and vegetarian fajitas that I have ever tasted. Hill and Valley Farms Bed and Breakfast is a great place to stay when your family and friends come to visit. You can rent by the room or the whole house. Enjoy this beautiful region. Come for a night, weekend, or rent the home for a week and relax, savor the smells, sights and sounds and experience the Kentucky countryside. They can be reached online
Hill and Valley Farms Bed and Breakfast is a treasure located minutes from downtown Columbia, KY and close to many of the Lake Cumberland marinas. Dowell Furniture is a gem in downtown Liberty, Kentucky. This three generation business carries a full line of name brand furniture. No need to go to the big cities to buy furniture for your home, cabin or houseboat - everything that you need from furniture, appliances, floor coverings, and home accessories is here at their sprawling showroom in downtown Liberty. The Dowell family is proud of their selection and can order almost anything from brand name manufacturers like Lane, Ashley, Broyhill, and England to name a few. Many folks will shop the big city and get the style numbers and swatch colors then come to Barry to see what he can offer. Barry and (wife) Jenny welcome the retirees moving into the area, their loyal local customers and folks that come with their trailers to buy furniture to take back up to Ohio, down to Georgia, or to many other states. The Dowell Furniture store has lots of history. V.R. Dowell started the store with his wife Ella decades ago. What started out as a general grocery store, soon switched to offer name brand furniture, appliances, home furnishings, and accessories. Mama Dowell never drove a day in her life, but worked until the day she died at the graceful age of nearly 91. Mama Dowell was tireless, but later on in her old age, she would sit in her special comfortable chair back in the store when she needed a rest. Barry and Jenny bought into the business in the early 80’s and credit Mama June as well with helping them to succeed. The young couple was ready to come home to be closer to family. They had a vision to expand their family business to offer more name brands and to continue the exceptional customer service, wide selection of merchandise, and competitive pricing that Dowell Furniture is known for. The couple is blessed with two children. Daughter, Jenna Gail will graduate with honors soon and son, Taylor is a junior in college. The children grew up in the business and know the work that goes into a family company. Children are welcome at Dowell Furniture. On Saturdays, you can smell the wonderful aroma of fresh popped popcorn - a favorite treat for the young and old alike. Sometimes, Barry or Jenny have been known to slip lucky children a quarter to get a bubble gum out of the old-fashioned bubble gum machine. This is truly a family affair and service goes way beyond the service usually found in the big city. Delivery is free within their delivery area with service and set-up - and of course they stand behind what they sell. Dowell Furniture also sells a large selection of Whirlpool, Maytag, and Frigidaire appliances at excellent prices, with outstanding service and an in-house serviceman who can fix all that they sell. They also have a huge line of Serta, Bliss, Dutchcraft and other name brand mattresses and bedroom suites. If you need flooring, they can offer Mohawk, Shaw and Armstrong flooring. They can measure, give estimates and install it if desired. This is truly a full-service DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC
