Old Clinton Burying Ground

This burial ground is located in Clinton, Town of Kirkland. The first burial was 1788 and the last was 1920. There are 48 Revolutionary Soldiers buried here and the families of many early settlers to the area. The cemetery is excellantly maintained although many of the stones are badly worn due to age. In the center of the cemetery is a map of the grounds, a listing of those buried there and the location of the grave.

Artisans’ Corner located at 1 College Street in Clinton is home to many local artisan products. On duty when the PULSE camera crew came through town was, Carol Riley of Frosty Days. She specializes in felted scarves, fleece clothing, tableware, beaded scarves, night gowns and other articles of clothing. All hand made with love by Carol! She has been with the Artisans’ Corner since it opened in 2010 and sends out a warm welcome to all of our PULSE readers to stop on down!

Alteri’s Restaurant is one of the villages oldest family owned businesses. The Alteri family recently celebrated the restaurant’s 60th anniversary which is located on College Street in Clinton. As we walked up the street on a gorgeous fall day, the outdoor seating was still popular by many locals enjoying lunch in the quaint village setting. Stop by to see Fran and the entire crew at Alteri’s... featuring homemade food with recipes handed down from previous generations as well as a bar that stays open late where everyone feels at home!

One of Clinton’s newest businesses, Across the Row Bistro, is an American Bistro owned and operated by Brian Mattison. Brian is also the establishment’s executive chef and wanted to welcome everyone to stop in to sample the great casual dining atmosphere. The menu of the Bistro offers something for everyone’s palate along with great desserts. The Bistro is housed in a Victorian home and is appropriately named, Across the Row Bistro because it sits overlooking the green in the center of the village as well as the West Park Row shopping district. One thing we quickly noticed is Brian’s hours of operation... Guess what days his restaurant IS OPEN? You guessed it he is open Thursday through Monday 5-9 pm... YES I said Sunday and Monday too!!!

One of my personal favorite things about fall is stopping into Cafe J located on the corner of West Park Row and College Street in the heart of Clinton and grabbing a white chocolate Pumpkin latte... delicious.... Jenni Bowie, owner (center) is all smiles with two of the regular staff members, Heidi Graves and David Trunfio. Cafe J offers breakfast and lunch offerings including many items with Weight Watcher points already figured for you, not worried about points? The village green is home to one of our area’s most successful farmers’ markets... Although the park was showing signs that fall was here, you wouldn’t know it by the crowd that was out in flip flops and shorts enjoying the day. The Clinton Farmers’ Market is held every Thursday throughout the season. Everything from the freshest locally grown produce, flowers, perennials and herbs, to cheese products, meats, baked goods and all kinds of great food to enjoy for lunch or take home for supper, dog treats by Clinton’s own ML Nolin, owner and chef at Jake’s Bakes, paintings, drawings, hand made jewelry, lotions, soaps, tie dye and so much much more!!

Our first office was located at 6

Williams Street in the beautiful

village of Clinton.

business people for making us feel

Exhibiting at the Clinton Farmers’ Market is a locally owned company, Camulos Chains which is an artisan company featuring handcrafted chainmaile jewelry & accessories. What stopped me in my tracks first was the great designs... Some designs were very youthful and sassy while others were classic and could easily be staples in your everyday jewelry collection no matter what your age... handmade mostly in stainless steel, (no tarnishing), with embellishments of semi precious stones and other metals such as copper. What really impressed me was that the designer is a New Hartford high school senior, Luke Towne! Luke has been running his jewelry business for about one year but has been learning the craft of jewelry making for over 4 years. His brother Zack, shown here, helps him out manning the store after Luke has to return to school in September. We had another appointment and had to leave about a half hour short of catching the artist himself but Zack ensured me that Luke would want to extend a welcome to everyone to come see his jewelry collection. Because the jewelry is handmade, special orders are not a problem. Get a bracelet made for your boyfriend or husband, have tiny wrists? Luke can help you out! email Luke at camuloschainmaile@ gmail.com

Stirring the pot

Here we are...

Brian Mattison, Chef/Proprietor

Today is 9/11, which led me to sit and reflect on where I was back when tragedy, sadness and chaos changed all our lives. It dawned on me how I felt watching those towers collapse on that day, is totally different than the feelings I have today. Let me tell you why. I am from the south, Plain Dealing, Louisiana to be exact. A very small town where everyone knows everyone and spreads more gossip than the enquirer. But, I love that town today for giving me all I have embedded in me. I am indeed 100% southern. Born and raised in the pure country with all the grandest things life could offer. I survived many heat melting summers, ticks, rattlesnakes under every leaf, copperheads lying in prey as I stepped carefully to my favorite fishing hole, and scorpions large enough to give you a heart attack if the snakes didn’t. We rode bikes down country roads, survived Katrina and all its devastation. We all love the New Orleans Saints, whether they win or lose. The French Quarters is a place that once you experience the culture of the French, known to most as pure hard core Cajuns, you will never be the same. Crawfish, (not CRAY-fish, CRAW-fish) is as commonly eaten as shrimp and we actually have a season for them. We do cook and we cook a lot, and yes, we think butter is a spice. We do have gators as big as a 4x4 truck and they WILL eat you alive. We get together for any reason at all to cook, eat and call it a holiday. From what I am told, I have a thick southern accent which ALWAYS brings about the question, “where are you from”? I get asked this so much I am considering having a tattoo of my state put on my forehead. I look back on my

raising and think of how incredibly lucky I was to grow up in such a close nit, 100% southern family. I brought so much of my childhood here with me, such as my love for cooking making a career out of it. My huge love for cooking was passed down by many generations to me through my mom and I pass the same down to my children. Cooking is not just something we do for our own families, we take food to people for just about any reason, sickness, death, life, marriage, divorces, we even get together with people we don’t even like just to get to cook and eat. Sending food to a sick friend, or one that is down on their luck, or to just someone that wants what we southerners take for granted, our southern foods such as gumbo, purple hull peas and cornbread. Today, I live in a place that has so much beauty to it, I crave the air, the scenery, and the artistic fields that I know only God could have created. Today, I live in Camden, NY. To those that live here, it seems just like another small town, but, as an outsider looking in, you could not be more wrong. This is what I see now that I live in New York. 9/11 is as much part of my soul as The French Quarters in New Orleans is to me. My heart aches today because I am a person that now feels what other New Yorkers felt, the anger, the sadness, the loss; it’s more personal to me. I now have friends that lost someone in all that chaos. The missing towers are as sad to me as all the destruction of Katrina was to me. The heaviness in every other person here in NY, is here with me as well. Watching the faces across the TV of the firefighters that lost

their lives puts me to my knees, thankful to see my husband, and our friends that are firefighters alive today. I moved to Rome 3 years ago in June from the only place I have ever known as “home”. The old saying that “home is where the heart is” really is true. I didn’t move here because the pounding snow in the winter seemed like so much fun. I moved here for my special needs child. I stay here because it has become home to me. I moved to Camden, married a Camden firefighter and have so many friends up here that I could start my own Facebook edition. I see all 4 seasons and the stunning beauty that comes which each. The winters to people here are a dreadful thought, although I wanted to tuck my tail and run back home my first winter here, I now love to see the snow covered Christmas trees. We hardly ever saw snow and when we did, it was a flake or two. There is scenery in between Camden and Rome that simply takes my breath away when it is covered in snow. It’s the same place that I have to pull over in the fall and smile as I see a field full of deer or wild turkeys in a beautiful open field pretty enough to be a Christmas card. The Amish amaze me. I probably make them feel as though I am a stalker when I see them because I find them to be incredibly fascinating people. The mountains, yes, the mountains are the reason I take long drives by myself on days just so I can feel alone with the creator and bask in their beauty. Driving down through the Village, there if you take notice there is so much history, young and old. The buildings are unique; the people are all friends and family that again, know all your business. I see beauty that I never saw in the south. I

see things that simply take my breath away on a Sunday drive. The silos standing tall in an open field giving a stunning view of generation’s hard work to keep a family farm going, even when times fell hard. I have been blessed to see both sides of this world that have made such a huge impact on the person I am. Remember when the south was in war with the north? My heart feels a divided love, and wants to be in both places, but there are no battles between the two. I love how both have enhanced my life. These are places I came from, and where I am today, home. SO, on that drive home, look out in the fields as fall approaches us and search for that family of deer, or the trees turning the stunning fall colors that in the south, we never see. Look out across those rolling fields and thank the creator for such peaceful scenery. Thank a fireman, EMT worker, Policeman or volunteer rescue worker; they have very heavy hearts today. Look for the beauty that is here in the north, breathing it all in and when you want a taste of the southern cooking, call me, I will hook you up! n

views as you ride and look over the fields. The plowed down corn fields, pumpkins, brisk air, are the signs telling us that fall is here. One of the things that draws me in that we do not have back home, are the farms that are here. I could go to a different one each day and spend hours. But, what is much more impressive is how the farmers turn a family owned farm in the summer, into a magical play land in the fall. I got to experience my first farm that offers this and so much more, “Wills Cackle berry Castle Pumpkin Farm” located at 1175 Hillsboro Rd in Camden, NY. This was both mine and my two children, ages 9 & 7 first time to visit any of the farms such as these. I was completely won over. The decorations were awesome, showing they were more than ready for Halloween with a spooky scene, including the talking pumpkin. Everywhere we turned, thousands of pumpkins of all varieties are lined in

rows at Will’s Cackleberry Castle Pumpkin Farm awaiting to be the one the customer wants to take home. Started by Bob and Verda Will initially as a small produce stand at their home in the early 1950s, Cackleberry Castle became a Halloween tradition in 1955 after their children displayed 11 jacko-lanterns to celebrate the day. They loved that people would drive by just to get a look of the displays and it wasn’t long after that, Will’s Cackleberry Castle Pumpkin Farm quickly grew into an annual tradition for hundreds of families with acres of pumpkins, huge totem poles piled high with jack-o-lanterns, Halloween displays, hay rides, and the famous talking Ms. Pumpkin. The theme of the festivities was always fun over fright, Verda Will said in interview back in October 1993. “If we see kids get scared by one of our displays we talk to them to make them less scared. Halloween should be fun, not scary,” she said. Verda Will used to dress up for her role as a witch to get into the Halloween spirit at the farm. She could be seen scooting, laughing with enjoyment around the grounds on a golf cart with a license plate that read, “Witch mobile.” Soon, the Wills children grew up, married with families of their own, and moved out of state by 1996, they then decided it was time to retire. The pumpkin farm closed down after the 1996 season. On several occasions over the years, Cackleberry Castle was featured in the New York Times, including in 1992 when the rainy cool summer led to the loss of 85 percent of the pumpkin crop. Despite its ups and downs, loyal visitors from across the state and beyond eagerly awaited the fall festivities and returned year after year until the farm’s closing. Today, again, families come to enjoy the history of this amazing place. Neither of the Will’s children continued the family owned Halloween venture land for long, but now the next generations of Halloween festivities has returned a decade and a half after the original Cackleberry Castle closed. The Will’s granddaughter, Misty Will Portner and her husband Chris now have the

Learn about the woman behind the ‘cure’ Thousands upon thousands of women have battled breast cancer. Some have pulled through the disease, while others succumbed to the disease after a brave fight. Few people who have waged war with breast cancer are better known than Susan Komen, a name many instantly associate with the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the most widely known, largest and well-funded breast cancer organization in the United States. Susan G. Komen was born Susan Goodman in 1943 in Peoria, Ill. According to her sister, Nancy, Susan was the high school homecoming queen and a college beauty queen. After graduating from college, Goodman returned to her hometown and pursued modeling, eventually marrying her high school sweetheart, Stan.

Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 after finding a lump that subsequent testing revealed was cancerous. Komen underwent a procedure called a subcutaneous mastectomy, in which the outside of the breast tissue was left intact, but the interior breast tissue was removed. The doctor who did the procedure assured Komen that she was cured. Despite urging her sister to get a second opinion, Komen was convinced she was safe. But within six months Komen found another lump under her arm, and, by this point, it was evident that the cancer had spread. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic soon determined the cancer had metastasized to her lung and under her arm. Komen underwent several different treatments to slow

Komen lost her battle with breast cancer in 1980 at age 36. By the time of her death, Komen had undergone nine operations and three courses of chemotherapy and radiation. Nancy Goodman Brinker then made it her mission to do everything she could to help end breast cancer and increase awareness of this potentially deadly disease. In 1982, Brinker established the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in her sister’s memory. Since its inception, the organization, now called Susan G. Komen for the Cure, has

provided funding for basic, clinical and translational breast cancer research projects. It also has become instrumental in breast health education and urging women to do self-screening while promoting annual mammograms. Through the years, the foundation has teamed up with many well-known businesses, brands and organizations as part of its fundraising efforts. To date, the organization has invested $750 million in breast cancer research, awarding many thousands of dollars in grants in countries around the world. Through her struggle with breast cancer, Susan Goodman Komen unknowingly inspired an organization that has helped to save the lives of millions. Learn more at ww5.komen.org. n

When I think of physically fit people this lady instantly comes to mind. Diann Gorea, owner of Keep It Off Fitness Studio, has been teaching and training since a teenager where she taught at just 15 at the Fun & Fitness Center which was located in the old Riverside mall in Utica. The position that Diann held there lead her into a life long love of exercise and the desire to keep challenging herself to learn other forms of exercise and share her passion with others seeking the same. While talking with Diann, it quickly became apparent that the course she put herself on at just 15 years of age has been one she has stayed very true to. She has gone on to personally expand her qualifications and expertise in many areas of fitness. In the early ‘90’s Diann was certified by NETA (National Exercise Trainers Association), and she began teaching at the Lady of America Fitness Club in Washington Mills. From there, Diann taught a cardio kick boxing class at All American Fitness as well as a class at Utica College in cardio kick boxing also known as Tae-bo. Teaching Tae-bo spurred Gorea on even further and she began training in the martial arts under Master Instructor, John Garrett at the Garrett Martial Arts Training Center. Diann studied Hup Kown Do, which is a non locking out system of Tae Kown Do. In fall of 2005, Diann achieved her 1st degree black belt and also got her Personal Training Certification. That quickly translated into a position at the Brookside Athletic Club, New Hartford, doing personal training as well as group classes at that facility. She continued her personal quest for more training and earned her 2nd degree black belt in 2007.

18 PULSE pulsepointpress.com October 2013

From the Brookside, Diann went on to work for Planet Fitness where she was a personal trainer for 5 years. In April of 2011, Diann made the leap and proudly

opened her own studio, Keep It Off Fitness Studio which is located in the New Hartford Shopping Center in Center Court. There is a vast list of fitness options offered at the studio 5 days a week in group class form as well as personal training sessions by appointment. Diann still finds time to teach yoga and pilates to seniors twice weekly off-site at the Parkway Senior Center,Utica and the Brookdale Senior Center, Clinton. The studio offers a pleasant and private environment where Diann offers a variety of classes that are high intensity, high result, yet low impact on the body. All age groups and all fitness levels are catered to. One example of a great class option is her Urban Rebounding Class which is done on mini trampolines. Diann explained that this rebounding class offers many health benefits including weight loss, increased lung capacity, improved digestion and its great for your lymphatic system. There are actually 33+ health benefits from participating in a rebounding class and those benefits can be increased with the simple addition of hand weights to your workout. “Rebound exercise is the most efficient, effective for of exercise yet devised by man,” claimed Albert E. Carter, a former professional wrestler who wrote a book about it in 1979. A NASA study a year later essentially confirmed his claim. The NASA scientists took measurements of eight young men as they walked, jogged and ran on a treadmill, then had them jump on a trampoline. “The external work output at equivalent levels of oxygen uptake were significantly greater while trampolining than while running.” the NASA scientists said. “The ratio of oxygen consumption was sometimes more than twice as efficient as treadmill running.” When you jump on a trampoline, the force of gravity on

your ankles, back and forehead is evenly distributed, but when you run on a treadmill, the G-force on the ankles typically is twice as great, the NASA researchers found. This leads to shin splints and knee problems. Mr. Carter and his family were regular users of a trampoline but did little else in the way of exercise. They discovered they were stronger, fitter and better balanced that other people they knew who exercised more. He

attributed their success to more than the extra effort they were forced to exert with their “core” muscles in keep their balance. The next level of rebounding offered by Diann at Keep It Off Fitness Studio is offered through Kangoo Jumps fitness programs. These space age looking rebounding boots offer the next level of rebounding benefits to the body. These boots were originally designed for rehabilitating knee injuries. Kangoo Jumps are safe, low impact rebound sport shoes, providing many great health benefits for everyone, any age. “They are so much fun you will forget you’re exercising to get into shape,” says Diann. I asked Diann if they were awkward or if you feel like you are off balance. “Balance is not a problem, come in and try on a pair and see what you think! Try before you buy!” said Gorea. I asked if that kind offer was just for me as her “interviewer” and she said that is what she tells everyone... come to find out, Diann is the only certified Kangoo Jump instructor in Central New York and Keep It Off Fitness Studio

is the only fitness center in the same geographic area that offers Kangoo Jump classes! “Once you start using Kangoo Jump sport shoes, you will have a lifetime fitness partner!” said Gorea. She can fit you for your personal pair and order them through her studio as well. “My Kangoo Jump classes range in age from the early twenties up to people well into their 70’s,” said Diann. “They are genuinely for everyone!” While visiting, I couldn’t help but notice a piece of equipment against the back wall of the studio. It looked like a small staircase. I asked what that was all along thinking to myself that it seemed pretty innocuous. Her response surprised me! She said, “Oh The BEAST?” The beast is the nickname given to Jacob’s Ladder, the official correct name of the piece of innocent looking equipment which Diann explained to me offers a fantastic cardio workout. The 40% incline keeps your body in a natural position which reduces the stress on your back and hips. Jacob’s Ladder is a self paced and self powered climbing apparatus and because of that you work at your own pace. “As our bodies age, it becomes harder and harder to achieve the intense workout that is needed to keep our metabolism at its best and our bodies in shape and healthy. I just try to find a lot of varied ways to offer that high intensity, low impact, perfect for you work out!” It was obvious that Keep It Off Fitness Studio was much more than a career choice for Diann, physical fitness is her passion. One of the things she would still love to be able to offer at her studio is anti gravity yoga classes which would require quite a lot of equipment and structural

changes to her studio. After looking at the brochure, it will not surprise me at all to see Diann and a class full of people hanging from the rafters of the studio some day soon! In the mean time, Diann will receive her certification for anti-gravity yoga in March of 2013 and will start teaching this class at another facility at the beginning of 2014. Keep an eye on Pulse for the location and schedule of those classes coming in the spring of next year. Diann’s class information is available on her facebook page, www. facebook.com/pages/Keep-it-offfitness-studio. Call her at 7960211 for more information. Before concluding our interview I asked Diann if she planned on continuing her martial arts training; she smiled and said, “Yes, in fact I test for my 3rd degree black belt this coming March!” I personally want to wish her the best of luck.. and say kick some butt, but that pun hits very close to the truth and I am sure she will add 3rd degree black belt to her achievements very soon! n

How to rid your home of drafts Think about what it might be like if you turned up the heat and then opened all of the windows in your home. All of that warm air would rush right out, and you would be left with a cold home and a hefty heating bill. A home that is full of drafts is inefficient and expensive. And drafty homes are not just a problem when the weather is cold, as air that seeps in when you’re trying to keep the home cool can be an inefficient nuisance as well. Higher energy bills and wasted resources do not have to be tolerated if you simply scour your home for drafts, sealing them to cut energy costs and make the home more comfortable. Drafts are often small cracks around windows and doors, but there are many other places where drafts can form. Knowing some of the less visible spots where drafts come from may help you to seal out unwanted cold air more effectively.

Attic Homes that feature attics with pull-down stairs tend to be drafty. In such homes, a large hole is cut out of the ceiling so residents can access the attic. So instead of thick insulation, these homes may only have a sheet of plywood blocking your interior space from the outdoors, as many attics are directly vented to the roof. To determine if there is a leak, turn on the attic light, close the attic door, and check to see if you can see the light on from below. If you can, then there is a gap letting both the light and air escape. In addition to using flexible rubber around the opening of the attic to better seal the door when it is closed, you can think about adding a thicker, more insulated door. Dryer vents The standard home laundry dryer vents outdoors via an exhaust duct. This duct is open to the outdoors, and it may be letting cold air into the home. That’s because there is typically a flimsy

Pipes Check pipes that exit the home, such as those that feed outdoor water spigots, as such pipes can let cold air back into the house. The same can be said for waste pipes. Also, check to see if pipes that connect to garages, basements and crawl spaces are not insulated. Use sealant around these pipes to block drafts into the home. Foam insulation can be sprayed into small crevices, where it will expand and harden, blocking off air access. Fireplaces

Although fireplaces often make for decorative and appealing accents to a home, many are not effective sources of ambient heat. They may draw more warm air out of the flue than they bring into the house. When a fireplace is not in use, air can rise out of the chimney and a draft can be felt in the home. Some studies indicate that an open damper on an unused fireplace, even in a well-insulated home, can increase overall heating and cooling energy consumption by 30 percent. If you simply must have a fireplace, remember to always keep the damper shut when the fireplace is not in use and use a glass cover you can seal tightly to further block the opening to the fireplace from your living space. Fireplace plugs, which can keep out drafts during the season when fireplaces are not in use, may also be a worthwhile investment. Homeowners can address drafts in a variety of ways. And doing so can make a home more comfortable and cut energy costs considerably. n PULSE pulsepointpress.com October 2013 23

47 percent were adopted, 36 percent were euthanized and 11 percent were returned to their owners. The remaining animals either died in the shelter or were transferred to other organizations. Although adopting animals from shelters remains one of the single best ways to help various organizations, for many animal lovers adoption is not feasible. Fortunately, there are other ways individuals can help shelters. Advertising Shelters need to get the word out about their available animals. Many operate Web sites or partner with organizations that publish photos and information about available animals. PetFinder.org, for example, brings together more than 13,000 adoption groups into one site. Sharing information about local shelters among your group of friends or through social media is a way to bring information about animals and shelters in need to others. It may take mere seconds to share the plight of a shelter animal or forward a photo of animals currently living in shelters. Sharing such information can improve the animals’ chances of finding homes. Make charitable donations

Shelters have limited resources and are often more than happy to take both financial donations and donations of supplies. The next time you are purchasing a bag of food for your pet, consider purchasing an extra one and donating it to a nearby organization. Many shelters also accept towels, linens and other items that can be used to keep animals clean and comfortable. If you are cleaning out old sheets and towels from your home, donate them to a shelter rather than tossing them into the trash. cont. on pg. 28

Volunteer Though many shelters pay their staff members, many still need and rely on volunteers. Perhaps a shelter could use assistance cleaning out cages or walking dogs? Professionals with certain skills, such as accountants or office managers, may volunteer their services to keep the shelter running smoothly. Individuals who excel at event planning may be needed to organize fundraising events that put animals on display and encourage adoption.

Spay and neuter Responsible pet owners should neuter their pets so the animals cannot reproduce. Only reputable breeders should keep their animals intact. Preventing unwanted animal pregnancies can reduce the number of animals that find their way into shelters.

Don’t make pet decisions lightly Some people get a pet on a whim without fully thinking through the level of care required for animals that may live 10 or more years. Pets require a longterm commitment, so anyone who is not ready to take on a new member of the family should avoid doing so. Otherwise, a pet may be surrendered to a shelter and not get the life it deserved. Pet adoption is one way to mitigate the growing problem of overcrowded shelters. But even animal lovers who cannot adopt can still lend a helping hand. n

While alone, she begins to suffer from hallucinations, catalepsy and madness that eventually leads her to murder. * “Fire in the Sky” (1993): Based on a true story, an Arizona logger disappears for five days in a supposed UFO encounter. Featuring one of the more realistic alien abduction scenes in film history, this film may cause fans to glance nervously at the night skies. * “The Amityville Horror” (1979): Another movie based on alleged real events, “The Amityville Horror” tells the story of the Lutz family of Long Island, N.Y. Newlyweds move into a house where a murder took place and experience strange events that have them running for cover. * “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006): This film from Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro details the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl in an eerie but fascinating fantasy world. * “Dawn of the Dead” (2004): Several survivors of a worldwide plague that produced flesh-eating zombies are forced to take refuge

in a Midwestern shopping mall to escape impending doom. This is a remake of a 1978 film of the same name. *”The Mothman Prophecies” (2002): Richard Gere stars in this film as a reporter drawn to a small town to investigate reports of horror at the hands of a strange, shadowy figure. When predictions begin coming true, the reporter is caught up in bizarre events. This movie is based on a book chronicling supposedly true events from the 1960s. * “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984): Freddie Krueger, a deranged child molester who was burned alive, comes back to haunt the dreams of his killers’ children. Armed with a handful of razor blades, Krueger earned a spot alongside horror movie legends such as Michael Meyers and Norman Bates.

Harden Furniture, Inc. by Malissa Allen Stinger

In today’s hard economic times, we see and hear about businesses closing daily in our communities, cities, both large and small. It isn’t just “mom and pop” businesses feeling the heat; large corporations are feeling the impact of the stressed economy as well. Harden Furniture is not only a strong surviving company, it prides itself in the fact that it has seen success through five generation of Harden CEO’s and continues to be a pillar to the community .

Charles’ son, Frank S., started working in his dad’s sawmilling as soon as he was able, making and packing shingles. Always ambitious, Frank read and studied intently outside of regular schooling, with a special interest in the wood arts. At 14, Frank did double-duty as a teacher and sawmill employee, continuing his after-hours education in business. Railroads and canals, expanding rapidly during that era, needed bridges. Father and son saw the opportunity, took the challenge and, with their resource of lumber, formed a successful bridge construction company. When the Upstate New York winters suspended construction, they decided there was also a need for quality kitchen chairs, which they could easily produce. Popularity of the Harden Company’s early designs soon led to manufacture of parlor chairs, rockers and upholstered pieces, and the Harden family tradition of fine furniture craftsmanship was born.

European, provincial styling, and was immediately followed by Natural Transitions, a Shaker influenced line of transitional furniture. Greg introduced an international flavor with a distinctive, hand produced imported grouping — Tapestry. For the growing home office market, he has established H.O.M.E. Guide, a versatile modular solution. Greg also instituted the Custom Dining Table Program, which allows a wide range of sizes, edge styles and table bases for a more personalized dining table. The Bristol Channel Collection, added soon after, blends and simplifies European Traditional styles and applies warm colors and textures to add a relaxed, confident feel to the home. Most recently, America’s New Mission, a mission- influenced collection and Cabinetmaker’s Cherry, inspired by Adirondack and Western styling, expanded the offering to provide a breadth of styles to choose from.

Until Frank’s son, Harry, became president in the late 1930s, the company used such lumbers as mahogany, maple and sometimes birch. Surveying the region’s natural timber resources, Harry - long an advocate of the native black cherry hardwood in Harden’s products - initiated its use as the company’s primary material for case goods.

As the family legacy endures, Harden Furniture continues to grow and change in order to best serve those customers who desire fine furniture from generation to generation...at just the right value. The story of Harden is much more than the history of a furniture company and a family... it reflects the history of our region and our country, and it has directly shaped the history of a community. From the very beginning, Frank’s concern for his employees and the village in which they lived was reflected in the construction of churches, a community house, and several homes for the employees. This tradition has continued over the years, with the building of a fire department, a golf course, and a new post office completed in 1995

Harry died in 1950, and his brother, Charles H. Harden (also president of Camden Wire) became president while Harry’s son, Dave, was elected treasurer of the firm. In 1955, Dave became president of Harden Furniture and remained in that position until 1992, nurturing the formal 18th century hand-carved line while developing more contemporary and time-popular traditional designs. Dave’s son, Greg, was elected CEO in 1992, becoming the fifth generation of leadership for the family-owned firm. Greg graduated from Colgate University in 1978, and took a position with the company in the Philadelphia sales division immediately following graduation. Greg has since launched several new collections. His first, European Interpretations, is a unique blend of early

In the next Pulse edition there will more, much more of Hardens. I will be sharing with the readers my meeting with Mr. Greg Harden, going on the tour of the factory, meeting staff and floor employees. My goal is to open the door to the public revealing the magnitude of just how much of a positive impact Harden’s has on the survival of many small towns. n

There is no denying the profound impact that the recession has had on the real estate industry. For the last several years, the real estate market went from booming to one characterized by homes sitting on the market for months on end. New home sales also have been conservative, and builders are cutting back on some offerings that were once commonplace. While home sales have increased, money is still tight in the building industry and among home buyers. As such, instead of over-the-top features in homes that were once becoming the norm, builders are now focusing on more value-conscious designs and offerings. The list of add-ons also has been reduced. Here are a few of the common features that are falling by the wayside. * Extended ceiling heights: It can take a lot of energy to heat rooms with 15-foot ceilings. As

a result, grandiose family rooms and two-story foyers are less attractive to buyers focused on saving money. Homeowners want spaces that are easier to heat and cool. * Media rooms: Individuals certainly love their gadgets, but many of these gadgets have become smaller and more portable. That reduces the need for giant home theaters and gaming spaces. While certain features are disappearing, there are others that are growing more and more popular. Dual sinks in kitchens, walk-in closets, extra storage areas, and hidden charging stations for devices are likely to show up more and more in new home designs. The design of new homes is changing to be more budgetfriendly and also represent the changing priorities of home buyers. As a result, today’s newly designed homes will likely look much different. n

Probiotics beneficial for both Mother and baby According to recent studies, the use of probiotics by pregnant and nursing mothers can be beneficial for both mothers and their infants. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that help support the

natural balance of microorganisms in the body. They inhibit the grown of harmful bacteria, promote good digestion, can bolster the immune system and also help to resist infection.

“Probiotics are microorganisms that provide several health benefits, which is why taking them on a regular basis has so many advantages,” explained dietitian and nutritionist Annie Jolicoeur. “They have a beneficial effect on the mother’s intestinal flora as well as on the infant’s developing flora. “A multi-strain probiotic supplement, such as Probaclac, can significantly reduce a woman’s risk of suffering from gestational diabetes,” she added. “Furthermore, it has been proven that probiotics can improve blood

sugar levels.” Here is an overview of the results of several studies done to determine the benefits of probiotics. * Pregnant women who take probiotics are less susceptible to preeclampsia, a condition characterized by high blood pressure along with an abnormal amount of protein in the urine. Choose lighter fare this Thanksgiving Statistics indicate the average Thanksgiving dinner exceeds 3,000 calories. Although there are staples of Thanksgiving dinner, many lowcalorie foods can be included to

stuffing and making a stew of roasted root vegetables instead. * Opt for turkey breast. White meat of a turkey tends to have less fat and calories than the darker cuts. Serve turkey breasts only, which will not only cut down on calories, but also on the amount of time needed to cook the meal. * Reduce the number of courses. Thanksgiving dinner often features multiple courses. Extra courses can be expensive, but such massive spreads also lead many people to overeat. Stick to two or three courses, and chances are guests will not miss the extra food. * Choose whole-grain breads. Sliced whole-grain breads or rolls paired with an olive tapenade will be flavorful and such breads are healthier than white bread and butter. * Flavor vegetables with herbs. Vegetables grilled or sauteed with fresh herbs may be so fla-

vorful they will not need added dressings that tend to be rich or cream- or butter-based. Have a wide variety of vegetable side dishes available so guests can fill up on healthier fare rather than more calorie-dense items.

Ho. Ho. Hum.

* Serve only low- or no-calorie drinks. Beverages can add a substantial amount of calories to Thanksgiving meals. Give guests the option of sparkling water or even diluted cider so they’re not filling up on sugary sodas or other high-calorie beverages. * Serve fresh fruit for dessert. Create a fresh fruit salad that can be served in lieu of fatty cakes and pastries. * Include other activities. Do not make the meal the centerpiece of the celebration. Plan activities, such as a game of football in the yard or a walk around the neighborhood. This places a smaller emphasis on eating while giving guests the opportunity to burn off some of their meal. n
