DEADLY BUS STATION BOMB IN JERUSALEM BY AMY A bomb exploded in central Jerusalem yesterday, killing one person and injuring 30 people queuing for a bus. It exploded at approximately 3:00 pm, and it was the first outrage in Jerusa-

lem for 6 years. It was a poorly executed bomb but it was not believed to have been a suicidal bomb. The bomb was left in a suitcase at the side of a bus stop, and when it exploded sent a

very loud echo through one of the busiest shopping streets in Jerusalem. During the explosion, every body stopped in their tracks and when they realised what the sound was, the street was filled with screams,

blood and tears. The bomb only killed one person, a 60 year old woman, but has left two people in a critical condition in hospital. Until yesterday, Jerusalem had been a peaceful country, but people knew

that it wouldn‘t last for long. Incidents like this used to happen all the time, but the Israelis thought they had finally solved their problem. Now people are waiting for the next attack.

SHOPPING FOR SCHOOL ESSENTIALS BY MRS GIBSON Once again our children have been regularly shopping for all of those extra school essentials, namely tea, coffee and sugar for the staffroom along with various other bits and bobs. This year we‘d like to share with you the educational benefits of shopping with your children and the ideal ways to keep them focused: Ask your child to write down a few items which they will be responsible for finding and purchasing. Ask ‗what should we

wear and which items will you need for the shopping trip?‘ Trolley, bag, money. Can your child estimate the cost of the items on their list? You‘ll be surprised at how cheap children think items are! Can your child recognise all of the coins? If so can they add coins together? Discuss road safety – where and when is the safest place and time to cross the road? Most children have never heard of the Green Cross Code! Which shops will you

find your items in? Greggs for shoelaces? Once you arrive ask if they‘ll need a basket or a trolley? Can they read the signs around the shops to help them find their items? Can they find and read the price? Find the items then compare prices to find the best offer. Begin to add up the total cost, calculators can be fun. Packing is educational too, we wouldn‘t put milk on top of the grapes but does your child realise that?

Milford Choir meets on a Tuesday morning from 9.00 to 9.30 and their teacher is Miss Hardy. The songs that the choir have been leaning are: Ain‘t No Mountain High Enough, Walking on Sun-

shine, Lean On Me, Morningtown Ride. The choir have been on a number of trips which have been great fun. The choir have performed at Lark Hill Residential Village and The Albert Hall, Nottingham.

Soon they will be going to London for a concert. One of the choir members said: ―I love going to choir! It is such good fun and Miss Hardy is great!‖

GARDENING NEWS BY ECO CLUB Eco Club have been braving the bad weather since the start of the new term in January. We have been really busy so far this term and we eagerly await the opening of the poly tunnel! We have planted many things from seed this year so that we can propagate them in the poly tunnel. At the moment they are on classroom window sills and in a small greenhouse. We have vegetables and flowers that we are starting from seed. Our first project in January was to clear the pond in the wildlife

garden. This was a smelly job but Eco club had to do it! We were pleased to all be wearing gardening gloves donated by some of the teachers for this messy job. Clearing the pond will hopefully see the return of the frogs. It is much better now that we have a shed for all our tools and equipment. We are eagerly awaiting the delivery of the equipment we bought with the 6000 Morrison vouchers that we collected. We expect this sometime in April. We have recently worked on the ‗Unusual

Garden‘ area near the Infant hall. We have weeded and cleared the paths and watered all the plants. We also spent time clearing the back fence of the paper that was left from last terms artwork that was displayed there. Eco club is great fun even on the cold evenings. We soon warm up when we start digging and planting and weeding and sweeping! We are very much a team and Mis s Walto n, Mrs Barton and Mrs Stratford are great at organising us! We have spent time in the Reception garden.

BY OLIVER The e-Learning Centre is a fantastic learning facility located on Summerwood Lane, Clifton. It is available for both primary and comprehensive schools to learn about multimedia and technology. The centre received an award, a check worth one thousand pounds, which was presented to Jan Gray, the E.L. Consultant. The Green Guardians Award that Jan received was The First Steps to Sustainability Award. The award was sponsored by Novozymes, a

Dutch company that make raw materials that go into medicines like Calpol and Pararcetemol. We were fortunate enough to be able to interview some representatives of the companies who sponsored the competition. There was Ellie Hill from Novozyme, Anna Williams and Leon Hayward from the Nottingham Wildlife Trust. The proper presentation took place in the Newton Building at the Nottingham Trent University where a celebrity also turned up. Can you guess

who he was? It Was David Bellamy! When we asked them why they started to give the award they said it was to r ewar d en v ir on m e nt all y friendly people that help the environment in huge ways. When we asked Jan what she was going to do with the prize money she said she is going to buy pond cameras so that the e-Learning Centre can monitor the frogs and frog spawn. We asked each of the representatives what inspired them to choose their current occupation and here are their replies: Ellie said: ―I really enjoy the feeling of helping someone who is ill.‖ Anna said: ―My friends inspired me to join The Wildlife Trust and now I enjoy the feeling of making a difference in the world every day.‖ Leon said: ―From my childhood I have loved to go

on adventures and explore the outdoors.‖

We have are waiting for the bulbs that we planted before Christmas to show. We have re potted the heathers and herbs from last year into newer larger pots. Come and take a look at what we have started to grow!

There are always so many things to do and we have many projects ongoing with Eco club. After half term we will be using the work space in the poly tunnel to plant and check on the growth of our seedlings. Happy Growing!

Every Thursday Class 11 go out into the garden, and turn it into a magical place. We work in the pollytunnel, the Shared Area and the Allotment, with Mrs Rowe. Recently we‘ve been making pots out of recycled newspaper, and planting a lot of seeds. Here are some examples. Marigolds, Sunflowers, Beans. We are using seeds out of plants that we‘ve grown as well. We also got seeds out of sunflower heads. We get to eat the food that we‘ve grown as well, like when we pulled our pumpkins up we got to make pumpkin soup, we also ate our cucumber, tomatoes and rhubarb which we all grew. All of the children at Milford get to have a go

BISCUITS, GLORIOUS BISCUITS! ART-TISTIC TALENTS

BY CHANEL TURNER Careful with the flour!

BY CLASS 1 Monkeys Biscuit Recipe

You will need:

3 ozs sugar, (granulated or castor) 6 ozs butter or margarine, 9 ozs of plain flour, Baking tray, Biscuit cutters, Mixing bowl, Rolling pin, Wooden spoon, Aprons.

How to make your biscuits:

Put the butter or margarine into the bowl and mix with a wooden spoon to soften. Add the sugar to the

margarine and mix together. Add the plain flour and mix together. Using your fingers, gentle rub the mixture together until it looks like breadcrumbs. Once the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, make the mixture into a ball. Roll the mixture out using the rolling pin so it is approximately 1cm thick. Choose your biscuit cutter and make as many biscuits as possible. Cook in a preheated oven for 10 minutes or until golden brown on 180 degrees.

Cool on a cooling tray. Enjoy!

Monkeys Top Tips:

You may need to sprinkle some flour onto your work space and rolling pin before rolling the mixtu+re out. Don‘t roll them too thin as they may burn in the oven! Always make biscuits with an adult, especially when using the oven! Make sure you have a nice clean work space. Wear an apron! Eat when warm, they taste extra delicious! You could always decorate your biscuits using icing and colourful decorations.

On a Wednesday afternoon after school, children on the Gifted and Talented (people who are good!) register go to an Art Club. At the moment, the children are making an aboriginal print on a canvas board (it was only 99p if you‘d like to buy one!) The children painted the backgrounds using

sponges and then drew a an animal outline on the board. They then used a cotton bud and dipped it in paint and carefully put the dots on the canvas board. Gradually, we added another colour all of them look really good! The club is run by Miss Evans (who is very good at art) and takes place in Class 11.

JOURNALIST COMES TO MILFORD

On Wednesday 16 March 2011, Class 11 had a visitor to help them with their prepara-

tion for Newsday 2011. Chris Ellis, a local journalist visited Milford Primary School to be interviewed by a group of Year 6 children.

Chris writes for Clifton Local News, a paper that some of you may be familiar with and also writes for West Bridgford and Rushcliffe Local

News. In addition to this, he also works on online articles for the BBC Sports Website as a Sub Editor, which means he checks and proof reads other journalists‘ work. He is also the Press Officer for the Elite Ice Hockey League which has led to working on Sky Sports News. Chris explained that he is a freelance journalist. On being questioned why he became a journalist, Chris replied that he always wanted to be a one! He started writing his own football paper when he was 9 years old and sold it to his mates at school. He mainly wrote about Nottingham Forest and Notts County and this led to getting work experience on Radio Nottingham. Here are some of the questions that the children asked: Child: What excites you most about being a journalist? Chris: The variety! Everyday

and everything is different! I like the unknown and the

opportunity to meet lots of different people. The most famous people that I‘ve met are Frank Bruno and Sven Goran Erikkson.

Child: How do you become a journalist? Chris: For me, I was in the

right place at the right time! I grew up in journalism, now, you can go to college and university and do journalism courses.

Child: Who do you admire? Chris: My dad! If I can be

like him then I would be more than happy! Apart from that, I admire the radio DJ, Steve Wright.

Child: Who is the friendliest person that you interviewed? Chris: Graeme Swan who

plays cricket for Notts and England.

Child: Have you travelled with your job? Chris: Yes! I do a lot of work

with the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey team and I have travelled to Europe with reporting on their games.

Class 7 at Manor Farm

On the 14 of November 2010 Class 7 went to Manor Farm. It took us half an hour to get there. We were very excited on the coach so we were very noisy and chatty! When we arrived at Manor Farm all of us saw a very nice man called Philip.

The main reason we were on this trip was to build a den. It was the first activity that we did. We used logs, twigs, branches, rope and water proof blankets. Before we started building we made sure the floor was clear and flat. We built a sturdy frame

and covered it with the sheets. It was great fun to take part in, even if it was a bit cold! We did it in groups with lots of adults helping us - Mrs. Lane was in our group. Once we had finished our den, we ate our lunches in them. It was a bit muddy, but

The second activity was rope climbing. We had to balance across a rope and you had a rope to hold with your hands as well, so you could keep your balance. Philip had some coal and drew on our faces. He kept calling it dragon poo!!! Imagen fell off twice - so did Mrs. Fallon! Katie‘s dad said he didn‘t want to go on! Mr.Shah kept coming round taking photos of us while we were falling off! When we got to the blindfolding we had to get into pairs. We had to trust our partner to lead us around safely.

We had to spin our partner around three times and take them to a tree that had a ribbon on. Then the other people span us around again and took us back to where we started at. After they took our bind fold off we had to feel and guess where our tree was. There were lots of animals at Manor Farm like donkeys, lamas, owls, sheep, chickens, peacocks, rabbits and horses. The horse was my favourite animal because I loved the way its tail moved side to side I especially liked its lovely brown body.

MILFORD SCHOOL COMPLETES DRUG PROGRAMME

BY MRS SIMONS Milford Primary School in Clifton is the latest in a growing list of Nottingham Primary Schools to become an approved DrugAware school, when they were presented with a plaque in a cele-

bration assembly on Friday 18th March. Children from throughout the school were presented with certificates for anti-smoking posters, and pupils representing each class shared their ideas on

what being DrugAware meant to them. Class 2 and Class 4 entertained everyone with their chants conveying positive messages about being drug aware. To become a DrugAware school Milford School has fully met the criteria outlined in their personalised action plan. This includes undertaking an initial benchmarking of the school‘s current drug education work, discussion with pupils and staff around what resources are needed to improve their learning about drug and alcohol issues and staff training to provide them

with the skills needed to identify pupils who may be at risk. The school has also linked in with a DrugAware Community Development Worker to provide short sessions to parents, carers and the local community. Mr D Magner, the Headteacher commented that

THE EDITOR’S COLUMN BY OLIVER Welcome to the Milford Messenger! I am quite a sporty person but also have a passion for literacy. Some people would say I am a geek but others admire me for the same reason! I also enjoy playing games on my XBOX and my favourite game is ‗Halo Reach‘ – the BEST game ever! Now onto a matter that really needs to be discussed. The one thing that really tips me over

the edge is the vandalism in the Clifton area. Even the Polly tunnel at Milford Primary School has been slashed. What is the world coming to? My brother is unable to go to the park which is right around the corner from our house because of the amounts of glass and litter on the premises. Mine is not the only vandalised park. In fact, I can‘t think of one park in Clifton that is not almost completely unus-

able. Finally, I am appalled of the amount of irresponsible users of motor scooters. Only two days ago, I was almost hit by a boy who was riding on the pavement. I hope some of you agree with my views and that may be together we could do something that will make a difference. Thank you for reading my article.

BY MISS EVANS ‗Miss, you said it was going to be hard, but I didn‘t expect it to be this hard!‘ I think that this may sum up how some of the children have felt today – there‘s nothing quite like a bit of pressure! It‘s good for you! Either I am extremely well prepared or I haven‘t quite grasped the immensity of the task of today but I am feeling rather relaxed! As I type these words, I can hear the marvellous Janet Simner in the background

saying ‗I am worried about the state of your pages!‘ Maybe I shouldn‘t feel so relaxed! I hope that you will agree with me when I say that this edition of ‗The Milford Messenger‘ is a fantastic effort and the Year 6 team have done the school proud yet again. I can say with confidence that the team of journalists have been the best I have had over the years! A massive thank you to the staff and children at school that have taken the

time to put together an article that makes this paper a whole school effort! The e-Learning Centre has been instrumental to the creation of this paper and in particular Janet Simner who has taught, guided and supported the children and adults to create something that is memorable for each child. The children have been learning about The Great Fire of London and the visit from the fire engine was part of this exciting topic. The children were able to climb aboard the fire engine and ask and an-

swer questions from the fire fighters. The day was filled with fun as the children also made salt dough houses, tie dyed t shirts and painted The Great Fire of London. BY MRS FALLON Thirty Year 6 Milford pupils went to The Nottingham Playhouse on Friday 11th March to see London Science Mu-

seum Live Tour. The children did not know what to expect as they entered the theatre and took their seats in the front three rows.

The stage was visible and the set looked like a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and the Emperor‘s New Groove. Had it not been for Faye

from Class 11, the Science Museum Live Tour in Nottingham would never have happened because Faye pushed the button that set off a chain reaction. Now Year 6 knew they were not going to be disappointed! The presenters, Mark and Amanda, explained that they were going to see a series of extraordinary experiments and dangerous demonstrations to illustrate some of the amazing things that scientists have discovered. The show really did what they said it was going to do on the advert ―blow our minds and challenged our

brains!‖ Charlotte‘s favourite part was the big bang before the interval because it was fun and different. Beth and Lewis thought it was amazing that you could make a leaf blower into a hovercraft. Sam thought the show was informative and inspiring but the best bit was when she smashed the flowers over his head! Outside they had their photograph taken with presenters for Milford Messenger. Year 6 would like to thank Miss Evans for organising the trip and Mrs Rowe and Mrs Fallon for attending.

WORLD BOOK DAY

The children in Class 10 enjoy dressing up!

n the 3rd March 2011 Milford Primary School celebrated World Book Day. All of the children dressed up as one of their favourite book characters. As you can imagine, they were really excited about this.

All day the children had loads of fun. We did a variety of activities and competitions. The best costumes won prizes and book tokens. It was hard who the winners were because all of the costumes were outstanding. Each teacher in each class had to nominate some children for their costumes and

then Ms Grinnell judged who the winners were! Even the teachers dressed up! If we had to choose the best teachers it would Miss Evans and Mrs Rowe, who were a black bird in a pie and a Dalmatian (although I am biased as I am in Class 11!) Other great costumes were Miss Richardson as a bee and Miss Walton and Stage

JEREMY STRONG

BY CLASS 8 n Class 8 we love reading so we were very excited when we were invited to meet the popular children‘s author Jeremy Strong at the Nottingham Council House in January. Jeremy Strong has written lots of hilarious children‘s book including ‗Bat Pants‘, ‗There‘s a Pharaoh in our Bath‘ and a series of books about ‗My Brother‘s Famous Bottom‘. He had teamed up with local libraries to launch his ‗Campaign for Fun‘ and is looking at bringing fun into the classroom and encouraging pleasure in reading, something we are really passionate about at Milford Primary School. Before we went to meet him we did some research and wrote a biography about his life. Mason‘s favourite fact was that ‗Jeremy Strong used to put jam in 3000 doughnuts, and that he wanted to have a tiger as a pet‘. Jeremy also asked the children to prepare some jokes to prove how funny Milford Primary school was, and

we had worked hard finding lots of funny jokes we could tell. Most of our class, including Miss Grant had never been in the Council House before and both Ellie and Rhia commented on how ‗lovely and grand‘ it was inside. Jeremy Strong spoke to us about why he began writing and what inspires him, as well as reading some of his brand new book, ‗Comic Kid‘. Korben said that he ‗liked Jeremy Strong because he was really funny and a good actor‘, some of our class found him really hilarious and Jessica thought ‗it was astonishing that he got all his ideas from his head‘. William was picked from our class to read some of our jokes and when the group voted he came joint first! Our experience didn‘t end there either as most of Class 8 also brought a copy of one of Jeremy Strong‘s books which he kindly agreed to sign for us. Liam thought it was ‗amazing‘ that he had personally signed each one.

GYMNASTICS FESTIVAL

All the Infants at the Gymnastics Festival

On Thursday 10th February, 22 Key Stage One children took part in a Gymnastics Festival at Clifton Leisure Centre. They enjoyed performing the routines they had learnt in Gymnastics Club and demonstrated their strong ability of team work. Several schools took part as they moved around the hall perform-

ing a Bench, Floor and Body Management routine to another school. The Floor routine was their favourite where they had to perform a sequence of moves including a forward roll and a teddy bear roll. Within the session they were also given the opportunity to experience Rhythmic Gymnastics using a ribbon and ball. Cameron enjoyed rolling

the ball and said ―I really liked it when we had to roll the ball through our legs to a partner – it was funny.‖ Since the Festival several children have developed great interest in gymnastics and now attend a weekly gymnastics training session at Clifton Leisure Centre. Holly said ―I was very happy to be invited to attend the club. I enjoy

the warm ups when we play lots of different games. We do lots of stretches and forward rolls. I look forward to continuing to develop my skills.‖ Chloe said ―I think it is really good. I have lots of friends and get very excited each week.‖ Corey was identified last year as a strong gymnast and is now part of the boys gymnastic team at Rushcliffe, also used by Olympic Gymnast Becky Downie. Corey has said ―I really enjoy going each week, and now I can do the splits and handstands. I also won a competition by hanging from the bars the longest.‖ Sadly, 2012 has come too soon, but watch out in 2024!

Table Tennis is on Friday nights at Milford Primary School from 3:15 to 4:15. Our coach is called Steve and he is very funny! Steve comes from Farnborough School and also coaches on Thursday nights. The people who go to Table Tennis are Hope, Corey, Camarah, William, Sol, Tyrell, Morgan and Jessica. Our favourite game in Table Tennis is around the table. The strokes we use mostly are forehand and backhand. When we do competitions, we split into groups girl v boys, the boys win some times but the girls mostly win!

Tuesday March the 15 saw the second preliminary round for the ‗Forest‘ under 10s indoor 6-a-side football competition. It was held at the University Sports Hall on Triumph road. Each round sees eight schools vying for the top three places to the city semi-finals at Harvey Hadden, with the top two finalists from there playing in the championship game at the Forest Academy ground. This is a year 4/5 tournament and our boys were really looking forward to it! What a night it was! Milford totally dominated

the proceedings with six wins and one draw, finishing top of our group! We scored 25 goals and only conceded 1 over all the 8 games combined! We had some amazing results, especially as the games are only 5 minutes long each. First up was Glenbrook. I don‘t think they were expecting such a technically sound team as Milford. We passed the ball beautifully, especially Owen and Aaron, and finished up 6-0 winners. A great start that really settled the boys‘ nerves. Next up was Robin Hood. They were a better team than Glenbrook but still couldn‘t stand up to

our attacking pressure. We were deserved winners at 2-0, with Alex playing a determined game at the heart of the defence. Our third game was against Rufford. All the hard work in our practice sessions and linking play paid off here. 7-0 was the final score, with Corey scoring a hattrick. We had a tough game next against St. Augustines. They were a very big side, some of their year 5 boys were as big as Mr. Magner! Milford battled hard throughout and managed to score a good goal on the break. We won this

one 1-0, with some solid defensive play from Harley and Blaine. Our toughest game was against Old Basford. The game swung from end to end. Excellent defending from the whole team and a couple of top drawer saves from our goalie Deacon! It could have gone either way, but the final score was 0-0. We were up against Windmill after that. Our attacking trio worked their magic again and seemed to score whenever they wanted. Morgan, our goalkeeper, didn‘t have a save to make all match! We won this one 6-0, but it could easily have

Some great football from both teams and an enjoyable game to watch. So we move onto the semi-finals next week, where the top three teams from each preliminary competition play off for a place in the grand final at the Forest Academy ground.
