This 15-year-old prodigy is on the rise on the alternative charts. Her new album "don't smile at me" was released in August, it shows her eerie and almost creepy side, with outstanding production and plot twists in her songs. "COPYCAT" explains her hate with people copying her along with a hard bass at the chorus. "ocean eyes" shows her soft side and her love for another person.
KHALID Fresh out of high school, this 19-year-old R&B and pop artist has been rising in popularity, with multiple platinum records. His memorable songs like "Location" and "Young, Dumb, and Broke" from his debut album "American Teen" touches on his nostalgia for his high school experience. EACH MEAL IS COMPOSED OF:
On Oct. 6, Feeding Children Everywhere, an organization dedicated to ending World Hunger, joined with the Junior Achievement Academy to raise awareness within our community.
Over 50 students volunteered their time after school to help package and sort over 45,000 meals, each meal serving a family of four.
"The meals are always very interesting," said Junior Achievement Academy Program Director Lauren Boyd, "this year was lentil jambalaya."
During the 2015-2016 school year, the Junior Achievement Academy partnered with the organization for the first time. Through the partnership with Protiviti, a global consulting company, the Academy has made this an annual event for students.
Upholding the principles of the Academy, Feeding Children Everywhere provides hands-on involvement for students to actively partake in a global issue, all within the walls of Oak Ridge High School.
"It's a rewarding and fun event that helps serve our local community," stated Boyd.Â
EL ORGULLO OF THE LATINO IDENTITY Rosa Flores
The Latino identity is a symbol of pride for a community that is continually oppressed, but the complexity that makes it so well known is also responsible for its restrictive nature at times.Within Oak Ridge High school, the divisions created within this particular community is evident upon examination of individuals who don’t fit the idea constructed of who Latinos are. These individuals are usually European looking Latinos, non-Spanish speaking Latinos, and Afro-Latinos. Upon interviewing Zuann, a light skin Latina with bright red hair, the pride in her heritage was apparent through her colorful use of her native tongue. She disclosed to me that when most people find out about her heritage, assumptions are made along the basis of her being biracial and adopted. Zuann's response to these assumptions and comments on her heritage was: “ oftentimes I feel insecure about my skin because of the times people have said I shouldn’t be considered Latina.
Yet her pride in her heritage surpasses those of many within the community. Despite this, she is continuously forced to prove who she is. Another group who is blatantly left out of the narrative of the Latino community are Afro-Latinos, whose African features are visibly challenging stereotypes and the common image of the community. The Latino community's lack of acknowledgment towards Afro-Latinos is not so much rooted in establishing an image but in the roots of racisms and the dominating European beauty standards. In an interview with Chanika Raphael, who identifies as Haitian and is on her journey to reclaim her rightfully earn identity of being Latina, the level in which

that it will thrive and continue to evolve. At the moment the Latino community must work to overcome their pride in the status quo that brazenly leads to ignorance and prejudice. The well-recognized orgullo (pride) of the Latino people must be redefined around their diverse backgrounds, appearances, and languages. Through this, the vibrant and vivacious latino culture will continue to gain recognition and at the same time serve as an example of accepting diversity.

Recently, Donald Trump made the decision to remove DACA. An executive order signed by former president Barack Obama that allowed individuals who entered the country illegally as minors to receive a two-year period of deferred action from deportation and grant them the right to study and work. The removal of DACA has thrown a lot of people in our communities into uncertainty and chaos. The Dreamers - immigrant youth are the ones in constant fear; they will be considered illegal once their documentation expires. There have been protesting and rallies unifying the people pushing Congress for a “clean dream act, one that creates a permanent solution for immigrant youth without adding immigration enforcement or criminalization.

#TAKEAKNEE The Controversy:
Colin Kaepernick was the first player to take a knee during the National Anthem. He wanted to spread awareness on the Black Lives Matter movement. Taking a knee symbolizes the country's lack of action regarding the subject. Kaepernick's career suffered hugely while NFL teams failed to pick him up leaving him as a free agent. Students and their perspectives on the issue
"I think taking a knee is pointless because there are better things we could do for the issue. Taking a knee doesn't change anything". -Alexander Perez
"It doesn't really affect me so I don't care". -Christian Ramos
"I think everyone has the right to take a knee, but they shouldn't because it's disrespectful. Even if you don't want to say the pledge you should stand up." -Cameron Thompson
"The players have the right to do it, and if they have the platform to do it they should do it to get the message across, even if it does offend people." -Sean Urban Written by Jennifer Reyes
HURRICANE SEASON STRIKES HARD Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico
BY GLERISBETH DEL RIO
Disaster struck Puerto Rico on September 20, when Hurricane Maria crashed down on the island as a category 4 hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph, causing catastrophic damage and a major humanitarian crisis. It has now been a month and the island is struggling to recover with no power and little to no access to safe drinking water. Doctors on the island express concern regarding hospitals that are under-supplied, understaffed, and often blazing hot. Officials are doing their best to get the island back on its feet despite rising concerns over a possible outbreak of bacteria related illnesses and lack of aid or supplies. Efforts to revive Puerto Rico will continue in hopes that one day the island will be back to its Latino glory.
HOW DO THE PIONEERS FEEL ABOUT THE HOMECOMING THEME? Tanesha Toussaint & Shajada Winn
Weeks have passed, but homecoming memories still linger. Those who went to homecoming reminisce about the aquatic colors and the visual boats that seemed to fly across the gym walls. The extravagant night was a success. Many didn't like or focused on the theme that ended up making homecoming an unforgettable night, and most just ended up having fun and enjoying their time there. A couple weeks ago before, it was announced that the theme for this week's homecoming would be "Under the Sea." This confused many. Why under the sea? Why not something relating to an eclipse that only occurs every hundreds of years? I was just as confused as many students were, so my partner and I went around campus to ask a couple of pioneers about their thoughts on this year's homecoming theme. Gadiel,10th "The theme wasn't good, it should have been a Hollywood theme."
Nicole, 9th "I like the idea, but no one should dress up like Ursula."
Brianna, 10th "We weren't even worried about the theme."
Depending on your opinion, to absolutely hate under the sea or love under the sea. Ultimately though, the most important part of this experience was the unforgettable memories we made at homecoming.
