Formation By: Jayden Smith “Okay ladies, now let’s get in formation”. Beyoncé’s new song, Formation, has (in Beyoncé style) sparked much discussion into the racial issues of today. While some praise The Queen for her pro-black anthem, others are criticizing her addressing issues like the black lives matter movement. The question at hand should be, whether or not Beyoncé is making a political statement or just loving herself? Looking deeper into the lyrics, she never actually mention anything about the police in any of the lyrics. Although, Steve Doocy from Fox & Friends, gave this simple description for the song: “And the song, the lyrics, which I couldn’t make out a syllable, were basically telling cops to stop shooting blacks!” Which is extremely false considering that the lyrics are all about loving your predominately black features and yourself. This simple minded conclusion just goes to show how minuscule and unimportant black women are seen as. Even in a song written about them, the media is only focused on one aspect of the video. This effectively displays that black women are seen as unattractive. Some public forums, such as Buzzfeed, posted videos where they listed surveys. According to an app, Are You Interested? (AVI) and OkCupid, another popular dating site, black women are the least replied to group of people and also noted as the most likely to respond. With the constant surroundings of young women being told they are not beautiful, Beyoncé

is telling them that they should not only be proud of their features, but love everything about themselves. Everything from “hot sauce in my bag” to “I like my baby heir with baby hair and afros, I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils”. To anyone else, this would probably be overlooked or gibberish, except for those who the song is written for. Yes, Beyoncé is a pop legend and celebrity, but does this mean she has to give up things she believes in? In typical fashion of the media, they forgot and pushed aside the true intentions of the song and only heard what they wanted to hear. The cool thing about music is if you don’t like it, you don’t have to listen to it. Beyoncé released a song and has not said a word since then leaving us all in awe of her presence. Don’t think she’s not aware of her releases, as stated in Formation, “You know you that b----- when you cause all this conversation”.

Harper Lee’s Tribute

N

elle Harper Lee is an enigma in society who be forever remembered. She was the voice that woke up Americans from the errors of their ways in the 1960’s with just a pen, paper, and her imagination. Harper Lee broke the boundaries imposed on women during the 1960’s. Knowing that politicians wouldn’t hear the message a woman had to say, she let the entire world hear it through “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Her book is narrated through the eyes of the innocence and objectivity of children to call attention to racism, prejudice, and gender roles in America. Due to her reclusive character, not much is known about Harper Lee. The one thing that is known is that she valued family above all else. Her love is shown within the book “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Ms.Lee didn’t just write the book, she poured her soul into it. We can find pieces of who she was in Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, Jem Finch, Atticus Finch, and Boo Radley. Even though Nelle Harper Lee took her last breath on February 19th, 2016, her voice will continue to live on through generations. By: Rosa Flores

ach year on March 17th, millions of people around the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green, eating green food, dyeing rivers green, and attending parades. The holiday honors Irish culture and missionary Saint Patrick. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in 385 AD as Maewyn Succat. When he was a teenager, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. He later escaped Ireland. Eventually, Succat adopted the name Patrick and returned to bring Christianity to the nation.

Although the color blue was originally associated with St. Patrick’s Day,however, green is now the unofficial color for the holiday. This is because of Saint Patrick’s religious influence on Ireland. In addition, the shamrock was regarded by Patrick as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. He is also said to have banished all

the snakes from Ireland, but some believe this account is false. St. Patrick was credited as the patron saint of Ireland. To this day, he remains one of the most famous figures of the

t’s back again and better than ever! Yup, you guessed it, this year we celebrated those elusive 24 hours that make up February 29th. With this much extra time on our hands, some people spent their time lying around watching Netflix and scrolling through Snapchat and Twitter. However, others were leaping figuratively and literally for these extra hours. If you happened to migrate towards Snapchat, then you might have clicked on their Leap Day Live Story. The story--which is collection of about 10 seconds videos---displayed people around the world bungee jumping off of bridges and other locations. If you’re less interested in the adventurous side

of things, there’s more. Pizza Hut offered a free personal pan pizza to anyone who proved they were born on February 29th. Another food location who got into the spirit is Krispy Kreme. The donut establishment upon purchasing one dozen donuts, the next dozen were only $2.29, a symbolic representation of the date. Even clothing stores, such as Urban Outfitters, sold items for no more than $29 to celebrate. If you happen to see their regular prices, I’m sure you would understand why this is such a deal. Although you were probably in school or at work, hopefully you enjoyed the day because you won’t see it for four more years.
