Happy MOTHE

LEARN THE HISTORY OF MOTHE

As Mother’s Day creeped closer and we hurried for last minute gifts, we all remembered the women in our lives who put up with our whining, complaining, smiles, and joys. A mother does much for her children: sacrificing her time, energy, and youthfulness to raise her children with her eternal love. The least we can do is acknowledge her work and efforts. Because of the strong bond we have for our mother, we begin to form lasting relationships that seem to go on forever. Our mothers have helped us to become great leaders, intelligent scientists, and creative artists. Of course, a mother does not have to be defined by blood. A mother is one who loves unconditionally while selflessly placing the needs of her children before her own. Mothers can take the form of mentors that come once a month to guide us. They are our grandmothers who make sure we never leave home hungry. Mothers can even be older siblings having our backs no matter what is thrown at us. “Motherly traits” can even hide in some of our friends, teachers, or loved ones. Keeping all this in mind, make sure to appreciate the mothers in your life who rush to your side no matter what; even when it is not Mother’s Day.

ER’S Day DAD

ER’S DAY AND FATHER’S DAY

Father’s Day initially began with a young woman wanting to honor her father for raising her when her mother died at childbirth. Sonora Dodd wanted to show how grateful she was for her father and brought up the idea of a Father’s Day. Although the concept of Father’s Day didn’t gain recognition until 1924, after World War II, under former president, Calvin Coolidge, Father’s Day is recognized as the day to honor your fathers, grandparents, and uncles for being there for you. Take time to appreciate them. If you don’t have a father present in your life, it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Father’s Day. Someone who you see as a father figure that has been there for you and treated you as their own--whether it’s an older brother, uncle, or cousin-go appreciate them.

Why we still need

Feminisim 8. Because women are still considered inferior in the work force Even though we would all like to think that both females and males are treated equally, it is rather the opposite in the working force. There is a 21% wage gap between how much a woman is paid compared to a man. In other words, women only earn 79 cents to every dollar men earn. Also, if As if that isn’t bad enough,

if you are a woman of color you are expected to earn even less. Sadly, it doesn’t end

there because studies show that when a large number of women enter a field, the pay will decline

for the same job men were doing before. This is because in the real world, they believe that if a woman can do the job, a lot of expertise is not required. consider low expertise is required for a job, if a woman can do that job. Yet, people still claim feminism isn’t necessary in a time where sexism is thriving and women lack appreciation.

7.Because violence towards women continues Even though we would all like to think that both females and males are treated equally, it is rather the opposite in the working force. There is a 21% wage gap between how much a woman is paid compared to a man. In other words, women only 6

6. Because women in history are rarely recognized Caroline Herschel, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, and Joan of Arc have two things in common:They are all women and most people don’t have any idea who they are. Each of these women made important contributions to history. Yet, most children won’t learn about what they did, but they will know who Thomas Edison, Michael Jordan, George Washington Carver, Benjamin Franklin, and Isaac Newton are. Even with more modern,

significant women, the difference between how women are treated is obvious. For example, in an interview on television a woman is more likely to get asked questions about their personal lives rather than their career accomplishments. The lack of respect and importance associated towards professional women is another reason of why we still need feminism. If you still don’t believe me that women are not given the equal amount of respect

for their accomplishments, then think of Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, who was accused of being a man in drag. Elizabeth I was a woman who never married at a time that was uncommon for a queen to not do so. Even with her stellar accomplishments, she was belittled by being accused to be a man because her intelligence was not a ladylike quality. As the injustices towards women are shown, the need for feminism becomes apparent.

5. Because there is a whole trade revolving on women’s bodies Unrealistic body images are portrayed everywhere from magazines to television. Women are constantly exposed to what the “perfect body” should be like; which normally includes soft flawless skin, size zero, etc. While men, are expected to be tall, lean, and muscular with flawless skin. Depending on race, dif-

ferent standards are set. For example, if you are white the media portrays tall and

elegant women, if you are hispanic and black the media portrays

women with hourglass figures. The reality of the situation is that both men and women, no matter what race are going to have stretch marks, possibly acne, baby fat, different body types and a whole lot of other flaws. The media’s idea of a “perfect body” is harmful for society and feminists seek to fight this affliction.

Why we still need

Feminisim 4. Because people don’t understand the word feminist Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality of men. Despite the fact that feminist are fighting for equality, the term has become synonymous to hating men and wanting women superiority. Many people including famous people prefer to disassociate them-

selves to the term because of the bad name it has been given. Feminism does not have a gender to those who could advocate in fact it’s a movement based on the fact that people would recognize that equality is the only way to go. There is nothing wrong with being a feminist. Especially, if you’re a man who

understands that it is only fair for women to be held to the same standards as men and to have the same rights. Men have mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters. If you are a woman who is afraid to be called a feminist. Don’t be. Being a feminist is about fighting for your rights; it’s what every woman deserves.

3. Because there is a stigma involving rape The word rape is thrown around so often people have forgotten the seriousness of the topic. Rape is not only joked about in recent times, but society has establish sexual violence as the norm. Many would disagree with me in this, but think about the times when you have heard, seen, or even said: “she was asking for it”, “It was because of the way she was dressed”, “She

8

JUNE 2016

shouldn’t have been at the party drinking” or “Why was she walking alone at that time.” The reality of the situation is, that society doesn’t teach men or women not to rape, but they teach women and men not to be raped. The aftermath of rape is even worse for the victim because if they do speak up not only would they be blamed, but they have to come to terms with

the fact that their rapist will get a maximum of 10 years in prison while a person who commits armed robbery would get 15 to 25 years. Feminism is asking society to respect women and give them the equality they deserve. Lastly, men shouldn’t be humiliated or belittled because they were victims of rape and women shouldn’t have to be afraid of getting raped.

2. Because a woman’s body is still treated like a state property Breastfeeding in public, abortion, the choice of clothing, contraceptives and the choice of sexual relationships are all choices that belong to women because they own their own body. The government or society has no right to decide whether each of these issues should be legal or not, or even

whether they’re acceptable. For example, breastfeeding in public is considered a taboo, but what is completely acceptable is using woman’s breast to sell beers, cars, and promote almost anything but when it comes to sustaining human life, it’s a different story. In other words, women’s breast are only accept-

able when women are being objectified for the use of others. In addition, feminism is a movement that is about defending women who throughout history have been seen as nothing more than objects. In the world of sex trafficking, identifying women as property and objectifying them is the norm.

1.Because by supporting feminism you aren’t just supporting women, but equality The traditional gender system is present in everyday life and harming everyone with no gender limitation. Men in the traditional gender system are expected to fit the role of supporter, dominant, worldly, blunt, intelligent, athletic, aggressive, emotionally strong , physically strong, and competitive. On the other hand, women’s gender roles

include being submissive, easily influenced, emotional, nurturing, dependent, not aggressive, indecisive, and in need of security. As for women with racial backgrounds, some stereotypes that would be associated are that Asian women are submissive, Black women are angry and Hispanic women are overly emotional. The stereotypes

and traditional gender system put an immense amount of pressure on men and limit women on reaching their potential by being associated with weakness. IFeminism has helped bring awareness to the injustice of gender roles women are expected to fit and by doing so also brought awareness to the gender roles men are forced to adhere too.
