The EAFT Web site The EAFT Web site is designed to provide information about the association and its activities as well as about other activities in the terminology world. The Web site is available in several languages.

Directory The EAFT and the Union Latine have published a directory entitled “Entities involved in terminology activities”. It contains information about a large number of terminology organizations in the world and their activities. The Directory can be found in a separate section of the EAFT Web site.

International Terminology Awards Together with Infoterm and GTW, EAFT presents the International Terminology Awards in order to support research in terminology and related issues. Every other year one of the following awards is granted: •

The International Award for Applied Terminology Research and Development (ARD), The International Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theoretical/Fundamental Research in the Field of Terminology (TFR).

SIGs (Special Interest Groups) The EAFT also works through Special Interest Groups (SIGs) where one or more aspects of terminology and/or terminology work are investigated in depth. The groups are open to all members and also to interested external people.

The importance of terminology today The discipline of terminology has assumed even greater importance with the growing demands of our multilingual information society, and a sound terminology policy is becoming all the more necessary for any organization interested in maintaining efficient internal and external communication. With such a policy in place it not only becomes easier to create up-to-date, well-structured documents through an efficient and well-managed process but unnecessary delays and customer dissatisfaction are also avoided.

Mission The European Association for Terminology (EAFT) was founded in Denmark in 1996, as a non-profit professional organization for the terminology sector in Europe. It is designed to provide a European platform for promoting and professionalising terminological activities and raising public awareness in this regard. Furthermore, the EAFT is committed to liaising and cooperating actively with other relevant organizations, associations and institutions at all levels and to furthering plurilingualism through terminology.

Geographical scope The EAFT aims to bring together all institutions and individuals in Europe that are active in or have an interest in the discipline of terminology. In this context, “Europe” is interpreted geographically and is not limited to the member states of the European Union. Currently, the majority of the national terminology organizations of Europe are members of EAFT. EAFT fulfils its objectives via: the provision and exchange of information on terminological activities; the promotion of and support for conferences, events and workshops on relevant topics; public relations activities and campaigns designed to promote the importance of terminology and terminology work; the promotion of and support for research in terminology and related issues, e.g. through the presentation of the International Terminology Awards (ITA) in conjunction with Infoterm and GTW (Association for Terminology and Knowledge Transfer).

Agreements The EAFT plans to develop co-operation agreements which will permit other institutions, networks or associations (from Europe and elsewhere) to cooperate with EAFT. Such agreements have already been established with ELRA (European Language Resources Association), Infoterm (International Information Centre for Terminology), LTT (Le réseau Lexicologie, Terminologie, Traduction), Nordterm (Nordic terminology network), and Realiter (Pan-Latin terminology network).

A importância da terminologia no mundo de hoje As exigências da actual sociedade da informação multilingue fizeram aumentar a importância da terminologia, de tal forma que se torna cada vez mais necessária uma política terminológica sólida em qualquer organização interessada em assegurar a eficácia da comunicação a nível interno e externo. A colocação em prática de tais medidas torna não apenas mais fácil a criação de documentos actualizados e bem estruturados através da aplicação de procedimentos eficazes e bem geridos, mas também são evitados atrasos desnecessários, ao mesmo tempo que se garante a satisfação do cliente.

A AET pretende reunir todos os indivíduos e instituições europeias que desenvolvem actividade terminológica ou se interessam pela disciplina da terminologia. Neste contexto, a interpretação de “Europa” é geográfica e não apenas limitada aos Estados-membros da União Europeia. Actualmente, a maioria das organizações nacionais de terminologia da Europa são membros da AET.

A Associação Europeia de Terminologia (EAT) foi criada na Dinamarca em 1996, como uma organização profissional sem fins lucrativos dedicada ao sector da terminologia na Europa.

A sua missão é manter uma plataforma europeia para a promoção e profissionalização das actividades terminológicas, e contribuir para o reconhecimento público desta actividade. Além disso, a AET mantém o compromisso de estabelecer laços e cooperar activamente com outras organizações, associações e instituições, e promover o plurilinguismo através da terminologia.

Área de Influência

difusão e intercâmbio de informação sobre actividades terminológicas; promoção e apoio de conferências, eventos e reuniões de trabalho sobre temas relevantes; organização de actividades de relações públicas e campanhas concebidas para a promoção da importância da terminologia e do trabalho terminológico; participação e difusão da investigação em terminologia e temas relacionados através de, por exemplo, a entrega anual dos Prémios Internacionais de Terminologia, em conjunto com o Infoterm e a GTW (Gesellschaft für Terminologie und Wissenstransfer - Association for Terminology and Knowledge Transfer).

Acordos A AET planeia desenvolver acordos de cooperação que irão permitir a cooperação com outras instituições, redes ou associações (não exclusivamente europeias). Tais acordos já foram estabelecidos com a ELRA (European Language Resources Association), o Infoterm (International Information Centre for Terminology), o LTT (Le réseau Lexicologie, Terminologie, Traduction), a Nordterm (Nordic terminology network), e a Realiter (Rede Panlatina de Terminologia).
