CARTESIAN PRISM

MY AMBITION FOR THIS PROJECT IS TO REINFORCE PLANES AROUND A VERTICAL VOID THAT RUNS THROUGH THE CUBE. THIS DESIGN ALLOWS ALL SECONDARY SPACES TO CONNECT TO THE CENTRAL VOID, WHICH IS THE PRIMARY SPACE OF THIS PROJECT. THIS PROJECT IS SPLIT IN THREE PHASES DEFINED, DEVELOPED, AND ACTIVATED. DEFINED - UNDERSTAND SPACE BY USING PLANE, FRAME, AND MASS DEVELOPED - USING CONCEPTS FROM THE PREVIOUS PHASE TO CREATE A DESIGN ACTIVATED - USING A VERB TO TRANSFORM THE DESIGN FROM THE PREVIOUS PHASE. 04 | ARC 107 | FALL 2018 | CARTESIAN PRISM

DEFINED THE GOAL OF THIS PHASE IS TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WAYS TO MAKE SPACE USING PLANES, FRAMES, AND MASS WITHIN A 4X4X4 INCH CUBE. I CHOSE TO CREATE COMPOSITIONS ON A UNIFIED SCALE - ONE-INCH WIDTHS, SO THERE IS A DEFINED SCALE IN THE PROJECT.

DEVELOPED THE GOAL OF THIS PHASE IS TO CREATE A COMPOSITION BASED ON IDEAS FROM THE PREVIOUS PHASE. MY FINAL DESIGN IS BASED ON BUILDING PLANES AROUND THE VOID THAT RUNS VERTICALLY THROUGH THE CUBE. FRAMES ARE ADDED TO COMPLETE THE VOLUME OF THE CUBE.

ACTIVATED THE GOAL OF THIS PHASE IS TO USE A VERB TO CREATE A CHANGE IN COMPOSITION. I CHOSE THE VERB "SKEW", SUCH THAT TWO OF THE CARTESIAN ANGLES ARE TILTED 30 DEGREES, WHILE RETAINING THE SAME COMPOSITION FROM THE PREVIOUS PHASE. THIS CREATES A NEW PERSPECTIVE TO THE CUBE.

ACTION SPACE

THE CONCEPT OF THIS DESIGN IS USING TRIANGLES TO BLEND DIFFERENT SPACES TOGETHER. THE BUILDING CONSISTS OF THREE SPACES - AN ISOLATED SPACE FOR THE CLIENT, A COLLECTIVE ARTS SPACE FOR THE CLIENT TO DISPLAY HIS/HER ARTS, AND AN OUTDOOR SPACE FOR GATHERING. THIS BUILDING USES DIFFERENT LEVELS TO CONNECT SEVERAL SMALLER SPACES TOGETHER, WHICH HAVE FLEXIBLE FUNCTIONS BASED ON THE CLIENT'S NEEDS. A FOUR-FEET HEIGHT INCREMENT HELPS TO CREATE THE VISITORS' EXPERIENCE, BEING ABLE TO SEE THE NEXT FLOOR BUT NOT THE SECOND ONE ABOVE IT. A WALL IS PLACED IN THE MIDDLE, WHICH IS THE CENTERPIECE OF CIRCULATION, WHERE CIRCULATION GOES UNDER, ABOVE, AND THROUGH THE WALL AT DIFFERENT OCCASSIONS.

CONCEPT A TRIANGLE, IN ARCHITECTURE, IS A GEOMETRIC SHAPE THAT IS INCOMPLETE. THE TRIANGLES USED AS PLANES DESCRIBE THE INCOMPLETION OF A SPACE, WHICH CREATES SPACES THAT ARE PARTIALLY OPENED AND CLOSED.

HOUSE, HOME, HABITAT MOBIUS HOUSE, UN STUDIO, 1998

THROUGH A TWO WEEK STUDY ON UN STUDIO'S "MOBIUS HOUSE", I LEARNED ABOUT MANY ASPECTS THAT ARCHITECTS CONSIDER IN THEIR WORKS. FROM THE STUDY, FIVE ILLUSTRATIONS WERE MADE, BASED ON: CIRCULATION, USAGE OF SPACES, INTERLOCK, MATERIALITY, AND SITE. ALTHOUGH THIS MAY NOT BE ALL OF THE CONCEPTS THAT THE MOBIUS HOUSE CONVEYS, THESE ARE SOME OF THE KEY CONCEPTS THAT WERE PUT FORTH IN THE CONSIDERATION OF THIS HOUSE. 24 | ARC 107 | FALL 2018 | HOUSE, HOME, HABITAT

GROUND CONTROL

MY AMBITION OF THIS DESIGN IS USING INTERLOCKING SURFACES TO DEFINE SPACES AND USING THE SLOPE TO INTERSECT THROUGH THE BUILDING. THE HOUSE CONSISTS OF TWO SHADOW CLIENTS THAT LIVE, WORK, AND SLEEP IN THIS HOUSE. THE HOUSE IS SPLIT IN SEVERAL SPACES SEPARATED BY THE HEIGHTS OF THE FLOOR AND CEILING, WHICH INCLUDE: A LIBRARY, DINING AREA, LIVING AREA, COURT, GARDEN, TWO WORKING SPACES, AND TWO BEDROOMS. THE HOUSE IS INFLUENCED BY ABSTRACT IDEAS ANALYZED FROM "MOBIUS HOUSE" BY UN STUDIO (REFER TO PROJECT 3: HOUSE, HOME, HABITAT), WHERE IDEAS SUCH AS CIRCULATION, MATERIALITY, AND SITE ARE DESIGNED ALONG WITH THE HOUSE. 36 | ARC 107 | FALL 2018 | GROUND CONTROL

CONCEPT THE CONCEPT OF THIS MODEL IS INTERLOCK, WHERE THREE RIBBON-LIKE SURFACES WRAP TO CREATE A SPACE AROUND IT. TWO OF THE RIBBONS ARE SEPARATED BY A DIAGONAL PATH, WHICH ARE PRIVATE SPACES FOR TWO SHADOW CLIENTS. THE PERPENDICULAR RIBBON THAT WRAPS OVER THEOTHER RIBBONS CREATES A SHARED SPACE.
