my ap studio art concentration was on iconic football moments between 2008-2018. i selected twelve moments that were special in modern football and used different techniques to represent these moments and celebrate football. each moment will have a focal point, which is one or two main characters. all of my artworks were drawn between august 2017 to may 2018, and displayed in order.

manchester derby 2011
art mediums: black and white charcoal, water color, ink wayne rooney of manchester united scored a brilliant overhead kick in the manchester derby in the 2011/2012 season. this drawing uses overlapping frames to create the overhead kick moment, when rooney strikes the ball. significance: nominated as goal of the season in premier league and international, nominated as best goal in 20 year anniversary of premier league

champions league final 2014

sergio ramos’s header was a last-minute equaliser in the uefa champions league 2013/2014 season, where they went on to win the champions league in extra time. ramos was one of the best at scoring last-minute goals, as he has scored on multiple occasions throughout his career with this goal being his most important one. idea: last-minute (clutch) goals, leadership and determination

javier mascherano’s last-minute tackle blocked arjen robben’s attempt at goal in the 2014 world cup semifinal. robben was ahead of any defender and had a great chance on scoring but mascherano’s tackle denied robben and netherlands team from moving onto the finals. idea: defending is a major part of a football game

art mediums: water color, color pencils barcelona’s 5-0 win over a powerhouse, real madrid, marked a dominant barcelona era of football, which they won fourteen major trophies between 2009 and 2012. each goal was marked with a snapshot, in the order of goal scored, from left to right. significance: barcelona’s best performance in a 4-year dominant era

angel di-maria (left) led paris saint-germain to a 4-0 win over barcelona in the first round of the champions league quarter-final in 2017. however, neymar jr (right) had the final laugh, in which he led barcelona to win 6-1 in the second round. with 6-5 as the final score, barcelona qualified to the semi-final and knocked psg out of the tournament. significance: biggest comeback in a knockout game in uefa champions league history

leicester city’s miracle 2016

leicester city broke all expectations, with a 5000/1 betting rate to win the premier league, yet they managed to do it. this moment was during the trophy presentation, when the manager and captain lifted the premier league trophy. idea: the underdog story, fighting against all odds

robin van persie’s goal was one of the most iconic world cup goals ever. this scene was during the headed attempt, where his extremely-technical diving header earned the nickname and moment “the flying dutchman”. significance: goal of the world cup tournament 2014, one of the best goals in world cup history

sergio aguero’s last-minute goal helped manchester city overtake manchester united to claim their first premier league title. this drawing is a three-part snapshot - a dribble, shot, and celebration. idea: happiness, joy, winner mentality

goalkeepers usually are not mentioned in heroic performances, but david de gea’s fourteen saves was a record for most saves in a game. while he conceded one goal, his fourteen other blocks helped manchester united defeat arsenal. this was drawn from de gea’s perspective in-game, against a shot towards goal. idea: goalkeepers can be heroes too

art mediums: prisma color, water color, graphite luis suarez’s hands blocked ghana’s shot, but ghana player asamoah gyan failed to convert the subsequent penalty. this was one of the most controversial and risky moments in world cup history, since suarez deliberately blocked the ball from scoring with his hands. the prisma color was used to highlight suarez from a crowded scene of players. idea: what is cheating and what is smart play?

zlatan ibrahimovic’s four goals against england was a magnificent display, but his last goal was an overhead kick from thirty meters out that landed in the goal. this was one of ibrahimovic’s craziest goals shown in four parts - before, during, after the shot, and celebration. idea: dare to dream, the acrobatics of football
