A NEW CENTER FOR PRATTSVILLE RESIDENTS

THE BUILDING LIES ALONG THE MAIN STREET OF PRATTSVILLE, TO SERVE BOTH THE TOWN AND PASSERBYS ALONG THE MAIN ROAD. THE BUILDING IS MADE OF CONCRETE AND IS LIFTED FOUR FEET ABOVE THE GROUND FOR FLOOD RESISTANCE.

ZIGGURAT ON STILTS ADOPTS A ZIGGURAT-LIKE SHELL HELD UP BY COLUMNS. THIS HOUSING ARCHETYPE CONSISTS OF A FLOATING MARKET ON THE GROUND FLOOR, A SHARED SPACE ACCESSIBLE BY ALL USERS, AND BEDROOM UNITS FOR TWO.

SITE: FOUR ENTRANCES TO HOME

THE SITE HAS FOUR ENTRANCES LINKING TO FOUR ROADS.

PECKHAM ROAD, ON THE NORTH ENTRANCE OF CAMBERWELL, IS INFILLED TO MATCH THE FACADES OF THE SITE.

THE MARKET ACTS AS A CONNECTOR BETWEEN THE MULTIPLE ENTRANCES, WHICH BECOMES A PUBLIC REALM.

GRID SYSTEM

NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS AND LOT LINES DEFINE THE GRID SYSTEM.

THE APARTMENT HEIGHTS ARE ALIGNED WITH NEIGHBORING FLOOR LEVELS SUCH THAT THE BUILDING DOES NOT BECOME OVERLY DOMINANT WITHIN THE IMMEDIATE CONTEXT.

SELLERS AND VISITORS MAY VISIT THE CAMBERWELL MARKET. THE SHOPS ARE FIRST COME FIRST SERVED, OWNED BY ANYONE AND ACCESSIBLE BY ANYONE. THE MARKET OPERATES DURING THE DAY.

FACADE RECONSTRUCTION - PTFE TRANSLUCENT FABRIC

PTFE TRANSLUCENT FABRIC FILTERS DIRECT SUNLIGHT INTO THE INNER SPACES OF THE EAST WING. SCATTERED PATTERNS OF THE SOUTH WING MIMIC THE PATTERNS OF THE ATRIUM’S GLASS ROOF, DISPERSING LIGHT INTO THE GALLERIES.

THIS DESIGN TAKES AN APPROACH OF “HOT LAVA”, IN WHICH ALL PROGRAM IS RISEN ABOVE GROUND LEVEL AND THE GROUND IS RETURNED TO NATURE FOR PLANTS AND ANIMALS TO SITUATE IN.

THE BUILDING PROCESS IS SPLIT INTO FOUR PHASES. IT STARTS BY REPLANTING THE SCHOOL ABOVE GROUND, THEN ADDING SPORTS AMENITIES. IT HAS THE FLEXIBILITY TO ADD MORE SPORTS COURTS IN THE FUTURE AS DEMAND RISES.

THE NEW SCHOOL IS DESIGNED TO REPLACE THE EXISTING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR 500 STUDENTS AND WITH 32 CLASSROOMS, AN AUDITORIUM, AND AN OFFICE.

THE UNUSED LOTS ALONG UTICA AVENUE ARE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD A MARKETPLACE EXTENSION. EXISTING WALLS WERE KEPT AS PALIMPSEST AND STRUCTURAL USE. THE NEW MARKET FEATURES AN INFORMAL MARKET, AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP, AND APARTMENTS.

A SCHOOL OFFICE, APARTMENT UNIT, AND HOUSE WERE MODELLED FOR ENERGY SURVEYING BY THE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. THE MODELS WERE DESIGNED IN RHINO, TESTED WITH GRASSHOPPER HONEYBEE, DESIGNBUILDER, AND ENERGYPLUS.
