Hoy más que nunca, es esencial sentir que pertenecemos al lugar donde vivimos. No se trata solo de tener una dirección, sino de estar en un entorno donde nuestras voces sean escuchadas y nuestras preocupaciones tomadas en cuenta. What may be an event with little repercussions in some places, for Latino community of Middle Georgia, is an awaited and unprecedented event.

Alejandra Ortiz says she felt a lot of excitement when she, her husband, and their young son went to a movie theater here in the United States for the first time to enjoy a Spanish-language film. Not only because she experienced a completely different atmosphere but also because she felt comfortable enjoying the movie in her language.

“Obviously, when I lived in Mexico, I really liked going to the movies, but here I am just learning English, and it was an obstacle to coming to the movies with my family,” said Alejandra, who has been living in Warner Robins for less than a year.

A WINNING FORMULA

“Through the collaboration between NotiVisión Georgia and Galleria Mall Cinemas is how we have reached this point where we screen movies in Spanish,” said Shelli Sanford, general manager of Galleria 15 cinemas at Georgia Theater Company (GTC).

“When we were notified about the demand for Spanish-language movies, both subtitled and dubbed, we were very excited to offer that format to our customers and expand our audience,” Sanford stated.

Although these types of achievements may seem simple, for Mónica Pirela, who has been immersed in the Latino community of central Georgia for almost a decade, they are very positive steps.

“Another thing we are looking for with the cinema is obviously to create job opportunities, since having these movies in Spanish obviously tells you that they will need more bilingual staff. In our community, our children, the generation coming below ours are usually bilingual, and multicultural,” she asserts.

And of course, that is the next step, as Sanford said, because in their active contracts for the summer, they are already looking at Hispanic workers who can work in both languages.

“For some, it may be something very little, and for others, it may be something big, but it is an achievement for our community,” concludes Pirela.

“It was a moment of fun and entertainment that was missing to break the routine,” Ortiz asserts. That afternoon we saw Ortiz outside Cinema 15 Galleria. She was so excited that she remembered without any difficulty how she had found out about the Spanish-language movies in the city that she has now decided to make at her family’s residence.

“I found out through NotiVisión when Mónica held a raffle because there were going to be some tickets for the movies since there was going to be Spanish-language cinema, and that’s how I found out,” she said, and of course, she decided to participate in the raffle and was favored.

ALL THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF LISTENING

THE FIRST SPANISH-LANGUAGE MOVIE, THAT NOT ONLY ALEJANDRA BUT ALMOST A HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTENDED AT A SPECIAL SCREENING, WAS ON MARCH 7TH.

“It all happened by listening to the needs of the people, starting with my family. When we wanted to do some activity, we thought about going to the movies because we all like it... My mom and my sister said they wouldn’t go because they wouldn’t understand the movie,” said Mónica Pirela, CEO of NotiVisión Georgia.

“We came to talk first with the people at Galleria Mall, and we told them about the data from the 2020 Census— that this is a community that has grown very quickly and about its needs That was in October of last year, and at the end of February, the movies were approved,” Pirela recalls.

WITH A COMMUNITY THAT DOESN’T GO UNNOTICED AND RANGES LOCALLY BETWEEN 7 AND 9 PERCENT, VERY CLOSE TO THE STATE LEVEL OF 10.5%, LATINOS IN CITIES LIKE WARNER ROBINS, CENTERVILLE, BYRON, OR BONAIRE, DEMAND MORE SERVICES IN THEIR LANGUAGE, AND ENTERTAINMENT IS ONE OF THEM.

“I feel that it is something very positive and very nice because it is a family moment that one can plan, on the weekend, be with the children and take them to the movies. So that they can share both Spanish-language movies and also continue learning Spanish , so that they can master both languages,” said Lizbeth Mancilla.

For Mancilla, this opportunity goes beyond a moment of fun because she sees it as an opportunity to immerse her children, born in Warner Robins, in other moments beyond family time in their mother tongue.

“It is an achievement that the voice of the community can be heard,” affirms Mancilla, who says she has seen three of the movies they have screened, including two family-rated ones, such as Kung Fu Panda 4, which was the first to premier in another language, and a horror one rated for older audiences.

UNA FÓRMULA GANADORA

“Por la colaboración entre NotiVisión Georgia y Galleria Mall Cinemas es cómo hemos llegado a este punto donde proyectamos películas en español”, dijo Shelli Sanford, gerente general de los cines Galleria 15 de Georgia Theater Company (GTC).

“Cuando nos notificaron la demanda de películas en español tanto subtituladas como dobladas al español nos hizo mucha ilusión ofrecer ese formato, a nuestros clientes y ampliar nuestra audiencia”, afirmó Sanford.

Aunque este tipo de logros puedan verse como simples, para Mónica Pirela, quien lleva casi una década sumergida en la comunidad latina del centro de Georgia son pasos muy positivos.

“Otra de las cosas que estamos buscando con el cine es obviamente crear fuentes de trabajo, ya que al tener películas en español obviamente te está diciendo que van a necesitar más personal bilingüe y nuestra comunidad, nuestros hijos, la generación que viene debajo de la nuestra son normalmente bilingües, son también multiculturales”, afirma.

Y claro, ese es el siguiente paso, según lo dijo Sanford, porque en sus contracciones activas para el verano, ya tienen la mira puesta en trabajadores hispanos que puedan desenvolverse en los dos idiomas.

“Para algunos, puede ser algo muy pequeño y para otros, puede ser algo grande, pero es un logro para nuestra comunidad”, concluye Pirela.

Tras años de espera:

El cine en español llegó a Houston County

Lo que puede ser un evento sin mayores repercusiones en algunos lugares, para la comunidad latina de Middle Georgia, es un hecho esperado y sin precedentes.

Alejandra Ortiz dice que sintió mucha emoción cuando con su esposo y su pequeño hijo fueron por primera vez a una sala de cine aquí en Estados Unidos, a disfrutar de una película en español, no sólo porque vivió un ambiente completamente distinto, sino porque se sintió cómoda al disfrutar de la película en su idioma.

“Obviamente cuando yo vivía en México me gustaba mucho ir a ver las películas al cine, pero aquí yo apenas estoy aprendiendo el inglés y era un obstáculo para poder venir a ver con la familia”, dijo la mujer quien lleva menos de un año viviendo en Warner Robins.

TODO ESTO PASÓ POR ESCUCHAR

“Era un momento de diversión y entretenimiento que hacía falta para salir de la rutina”, afirma Ortiz.

La tarde que vimos a Ortiz en las afueras del Cinema 15 Galleria, estaba tan emocionada que recordó sin contratiempo cómo se había enterado de las películas en español en la ciudad que ha decidido tener ahora como la residencia de su familia.

“Me enteré por NotiVisión cuando Mónica hizo una rifa porque iba a haber unos boletos para el cine, ya que iba a haber cine en español y así fue yo me enteré”, dijo, y por supuesto decidió participar en el sorteo y salió favorecida.

LA PRIMERA PELÍCULA EN ESPAÑOL A LA QUE NO SOLO ALEJANDRA SINO CASI UN CENTENAR DE PERSONAS ASISTIERON EN UNA FUNCIÓN ESPECIAL FUE EL PASADO 7 DE MARZO.

“Todo pasó de escuchar, la necesidad de la gente empezando por mi familia, cuando nosotros queríamos hacer alguna actividad, y pensábamos en venir al cine, porque nos gusta a todos…mi mamá y mi hermana decían que no iban a ir porque no iban a entender la película”, dijo Mónica Pirela, CEO de NotiVisión Georgia.

“Venimos a hablar primero con la gente de Gallería Mall y le comentamos sobre los datos del Censo 2020, que esta es una comunidad que ha crecido muy rápido y de sus necesidades, eso fue en octubre del año pasado y a finales de febrero fueron aprobadas las películas”, recuerda Pirela.

“Yo siento que es algo muy positivo, y muy bonito porque es un momento familiar que uno puede planear, salir el fin de semana, estar con los hijos, llevarlos al cine y también verdad, para que puedan ellos compartir tanto las películas en español y también siga creciendo nuestro idioma español aquí para que ellos puedan dominar los dos las dos lenguas,” dijo Lizbeth Mancilla.

Para Mancilla, esta oportunidad va más allá de un momento de diversión, porque ella lo ve como la ocasión para sumergir a sus hijos, nacidos en Warner Robins, en otros momentos, más allá de las horas en familia en el idioma materno.

“Es un logro que la voz de la comunidad se pueda escuchar”, afirma Mancilla, quien dice haberse visto tres de las películas que han proyectado incluyendo dos de clasificación familiar, como Kun Fu Panda 4, que fue la pionera del servicio en otro idioma y una de terror clasificada para audiencias mayores.

FROM GEORGIA, CALLS FOR PRESIDENT BIDEN TO GRANT WORK PERMITS TO IMMIGRANTS

The American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC), supported by the GALEO Impact Fund, held a press conference to address the urgent need to provide legal work permits to immigrants who have been in the country for a long time. The conference called on President Biden to take decisive action to benefit undocumented spouses and immediate family members of U.S. citizens, Dreamers not eligible for DACA, and workers who have been in the country without legal status for many years.

A diverse group of speakers, including elected Latino officials, business leaders, and affected individuals, participated in the conference. Among them were U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat and Georgia State Senator Jason Esteves. The participants highlighted the valuable economic and cultural contributions of immigrants and requested the expansion of work permits to provide security and dignity to families and communities.

Kyle Gómez-Leineweber from the GALEO Impact Fund emphasized the positive impact these permits would have on the economy and society. The proposed measures could significantly increase the annual tax revenues of the U.S. by approximately $13.8 billion.

The mobilization starts about 100 miles away, and for nearly 2 hours, dozens of people must travel from their headquarters in Chamblee, in northern DeKalb County, to Macon in central Georgia. It’s a task they have been doing for several years, and the enthusiasm is always the same.

“Today, we are going to Bibb County in central Georgia... the city of Macon is a very populated city, and today we are exclusively visiting Latino voters,” says Carlos Medina, Lead Organizer of GLAHRAction Network, responsible for carrying out the campaign “La Gente Vota.”

Committed to mobilizing the vote of as many people of color as possible throughout Georgia, the organization deploys its personnel in what they call the state’s “Black Belt,” comprising the counties with the least electoral education attention, including Bibb County.

“There are more than 20 counties in the ‘Black Belt’ area, counties with less focus from other campaigns, less visited, and more rural,” says Medina. “This is the first stage of our focus, of ‘La Gente Vota,’ on Latinos and African Americans.”

The first phase of the campaign began in mid-March and lasted until April 29, to cover the May primaries.

However, the major goal is to pick up the pace after this date, aiming at the November presidential elections.

In this campaign across Bibb County neighborhoods, people from various cities in central Georgia, such as Warner Robins, Perry, and Macon, participated, reaching out to educate voters. “We are reminding everyone about the importance of voting,” says Sara Rodríguez, a Warner Robins resident who has been participating in the campaign for several months.

Rodríguez believes they knocked on more than 7,000 doors in less than two months, and when interviewed for NotiVisión Georgia, the campaign had not yet concluded.

With such close results in past presidential campaigns, where the winner in Georgia was decided by less than 12,000 votes, it’s no surprise that organizations see the Latino vote as important, especially as some priorities have changed.

When the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) started two decades ago, there were around 10,000 registered Latino voters, according to its director Jerry González. Now, it’s

According to the Georgia Secretary of State, there are currently 6,938,987 registered voters in the state. While the focus of this campaign is on the November presidential elections, they also targeted the May 21 primary elections, where parties selected candidates for various local and state offices.

“We have already visited more than 10 counties, and by November, we hope to have covered the entire state,” says Medina, referring to the last weeks of this first phase. From March to April, they aimed to knock on between 30,000 and 35,000 doors.

“We seek to make voting in the Latino community a strategy for community defense, as it is important for everyone to go out and vote, not just in presidential elections but also in local ones,” affirmed Luz Hernández, a Houston County resident for over 18 years.

For Hernández, it is essential that those who have the privilege to vote do so and express themselves through their vote. According to the Georgia Secretary of State, more than 205,000 people identified as Latinos are registered to vote, and this is the population that GLAHR-Action Network aims to reach through its campaign “La Gente Vota.”

“We add between 20,000 and 30,000 African Americans to that figure. That’s our goal for now,” concludes Medina. Overall, the Georgia Secretary of State reports 6,938,987 registered voters, with 296,252 in Bibb County alone. The total number of doors to knock on to reach them all is 208,328.

A GROWING ELECTORATE

estimated that more than 400,000 Latinos could register and vote, representing about 5% of all voters in Georgia. Although these percentages are small, they can become a decisive voting bloc in elections won by small margins or be crucial in building coalitions with other minority voters in the state. A national survey conducted in 2023 indicates that Latino voters in Georgia are mainly concentrated in the Atlanta metropolitan area. An overwhelming

majority, about 88%, of these registered voters consider themselves “active,” meaning they voted in the last two elections, according to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office.

“Additionally, around 20,000 children of immigrants become eligible to register to vote each year in Georgia, adding to a high percentage of people who get naturalized each year in Georgia,” says González.

La movilización empieza a unas 100 millas de distancia, y por casi 2 horas, decenas de personas deberán dirigirse desde su sede en Chambee en el norte condado de DeKalb, hasta Macon en el centro de Georgia, es una tarea que vienen haciendo desde hace varios años, y el entusiasmo siempre es el mismo.

“El día de hoy estamos yendo al condado de Bibb al centro de Georgia…la ciudad de Macon es una ciudad muy poblada y hoy estamos visitando exclusivamente a votantes latinos”, dice Carlos Medina, Líder principal de GLAHR-Action Network la responsable de llevar al terreno la campaña “La Gente Vota”.

Nearly 2 million people are expected to travel via other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains this upcoming summer.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) forecasts a significant number of Georgians planning to

travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

According to AAA, 1.3 million Georgians will travel 50 miles or more, marking 52,824 more holiday travelers than the previous year.

Almost 43.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more during the holiday period. This represents

1.7 million more travelers than last year, a 4% increase, though slightly below the record of 44 million in 2005.

Road travel is expected to set records in Georgia and across the country, with nearly 1.5 million more Americans traveling by road than last year.

AAA projects nearly 38.4 million will travel by car during the Memorial Day weekend, the highest figure for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2001. The national number of drivers this year increased by 4% compared to last year and 1.9% more than in 2019.

HIS WORK CHALLENGES

King has become one of the governor’s key players since the COVID-19 pandemic, which is why he works side by side with him, committed to maintaining Georgia’s competitiveness, reducing healthcare costs, insurance rates, and pursuing those who commit fraud.

“To keep Georgia workers safe, we must continue to hold fraudsters and arsonists accountable. Now, more than ever, we must uphold our conservative values, support law enforcement and the military. We must put Georgia families ahead of politics and special interests.”

John King is the first Latino to hold one of the highest constitutional positions in the state government.

He has just recounted his story to us once again, and the challenges he has had to face to become the highest-ranking Latino in the state government, having first been appointed by Governor Brian Kemp as Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, and then elected by a wide margin to that position in 2022.

Now he decides to show us the lining of his traditional blue jacket, adorned with badges symbolizing all the masks of “Lucha Libre”, a sport deeply rooted in Mexico of which he is an admirer.

He is Commissioner John King; a retired General from the Georgia National Guard, former chief of the Doraville Police Department, and former Atlanta police officer, just to name a few notable positions.

In a previous interview, King, whose real last name is Reyes and whose given name is Juan— ’Juan Reyes’—shared, “I am originally from Santiago Nuevo León, Mexico; my dad was an American retired merchant from the navy and my mom, who f is of Spanish descent, and I grew up there.”

THE GUNSHOT THAT CHANGED HIS COURSE

King recalls his childhood being difficult, especially when the family moved to live in Laredo, Texas. This is where he began to understand that Hispanics did not accept him much because of his appearance as a “gringo,” and neither did Americans when they heard him speak Spanish.

“I hated Laredo,” he recalls with a laugh, explaining that he later enlisted in the United States Army. That’s how he arrived in Georgia, just before the 1996 Olympics.

“Here, few people spoke Spanish then; there were more Cubans and Colombians than now, and few Mexicans.”

He worked as a security guard at night to pay for college, and later he had the opportunity to work for the Atlanta Police Department, where a riot of Cubans in the federal prison made them call for officers who spoke Spanish, and he was the only one.

“It was my first experience in which knowing another language was so useful to me,” he

HIS BIG LEAP INTO GOVERNMENT

He was about to retire as police chief when in July 2019 he was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp as Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, following the retirement of the incumbent due to corruption charges. Since then, he has focused on restoring the credibility of the position, and in 2022, he faced several opponents, winning the election by a wide margin.

“From my early days as an Atlanta police officer to serving as Doraville police chief and Division General in the National Guard, I have dedicated my entire life to public service,” he asserts.

Dreamers now have access to “Obamacare”

Beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals—DACA, will now have access to affordable and quality healthcare coverage in the insurance marketplace known as OBAMACARE.

This was recently announced by the federal government, highlighting that over the last decade, DACA has provided stability, opportunities, and progress to hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who enrolled in the program.

In 2012, President Obama and then-Vice President Biden created the DACA policy to transform the lives of eligible Dreamers, young people who came to this country as children, allowing them to live and work legally in the country.

“While President Biden continues to urge Congress to provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and others, he is committed to protecting and preserving DACA and providing beneficiaries with the opportunities and support they need to succeed, including access to affordable and quality healthcare coverage,” said a statement from the White House.

It states that, thanks to the actions of the current administration, the recent decision will for the first time remove the prohibition on DACA beneficiaries being eligible for coverage under the Low-Cost Health Care Act, and it is projected that this will help over 100,000 young people obtain health insurance.

“Starting in November, DACA beneficiaries can apply for coverage through HealthCare.gov and state marketplaces, where they may qualify

for financial assistance to help them purchase quality health insurance,” adds the Biden administration’s statement.

Currently, four out of five healthcare marketplace consumers have found a plan for less than $10 per month, and millions save an average of around $800 per year on their premiums.

Also, at a hearing of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee, Federal Senator for Georgia, Jon Ossoff, highlighted the urgent need for bipartisan legislation to establish a clear pathway to citizenship for DACA beneficiaries.

The senator emphasized the invaluable contributions of DACA beneficiaries in Georgia, highlighting their strong commitment to education, employment, and service.

Así lo anunció recientemente el gobierno federal resaltando que, durante la última década, DACA ha brindado estabilidad, posibilidades y progreso a cientos de miles de Dreamers que se acogieron al programa. En 2012, el presidente Obama y el entonces vicepresidente Biden crearon la política DACA para transformar las vidas de los Dreamers elegibles (jóvenes que llegaron a este país cuando eran niños) permitiéndoles vivir y trabajar legalmente en el país.

“Si bien el presidente Biden continúa pidiendo al Congreso que brinde un camino hacia la ciudadanía para los Dreamers y otros, está comprometido en proteger y preservar DACA y brindarles a los beneficiarios las oportunidades y el apoyo que necesitan para tener éxito, incluido el acceso a una cobertura de atención médica asequible y de calidad”, dijo en un comunicado la Casa Blanca.

SECURE LONG-TERM COMMITMENT WITH GEORGIA BULLDOGS

The head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, Kirby Smart, has signed an agreement that will keep him in Athens for close to a decade, solidifying his position as the highest-paid coach in college football.

The University of Georgia Athletics announced that Smart’s contract has been extended until the 2033 season, while the Athletic Director, Josh Brooks, contract has been extended until 2030. As part of the agreement, Smart will receive an annual salary of $13 million, with a significant increase of $1.75 million per year. Additionally, he will have the opportunity to earn annual bonuses ranging from $1.3 million to $1.55

Meanwhile, Brooks will see an annual increase in his salary of $100,000, reaching a total sum of $1,275,000 per year. He will also be eligible for bonuses of up to $200,000 per year if the team achieves top placements in the Learfield Directors Cup.

Both Smart and Brooks expressed their gratitude for the trust placed in them by the university, emphasizing their continued commitment to Georgia’s athletic success.

El entrenador en jefe de los Georgia Bulldogs, Kirby Smart, ha firmado un acuerdo que lo mantendrá en Athens durante casi la próxima década, consolidándose así como el entrenador mejor remunerado en el fútbol universitario.

La Universidad de Georgia Athletics anunció que el contrato de Smart se ha extendido hasta la temporada 2033, mientras que el contrato del director Atlético, Josh Brooks, se ha prolongado hasta 2030. Como parte del acuerdo, Smart recibirá un salario

anual de $13 millones, con un aumento significativo de $1.75 millones al año. Además, tendrá la oportunidad de ganar bonificaciones anuales que oscilan entre $1.3 millones y $1.55 millones. Por su parte, Brooks verá un incremento anual en su salario de $100,000, alcanzando una suma total de $1,275,000 al año. También podrá obtener bonificaciones de hasta $200,000 por año en caso de que el equipo logre ubicarse en los primeros puestos del Learfield Directors Cup.

Tanto Smart como Brooks expresaron su agradecimiento por la confianza depositada en ellos por parte de la universidad, destacando su compromiso continuo con el éxito deportivo de Georgia.

The Business Development Center of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (HBC), with the financial support of the ACE Women's Business Center, is pleased to announce the arrival of the ELEVA program in Spanish to Tifton, GA, which began on May 4th. This nineweek program is designed to transform local businesses by expanding skills and opening new opportunities for Hispanic entrepreneurs. Thanks to the support of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Business Center, 15 companies will

receive a $2000 scholarship. ELEVA offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes knowledge in strategic direction, financial health, opportunity management, and skills development. Additionally, participants have access to personalized consultations with experts, exclusive networking opportunities, and exposure on social media. With this program, HBC reaffirms its commitment to economically empower Hispanic businesses through education and access to resources, supporting sustainable and profitable business growth in the region.

El Centro de Desarrollo Empresarial de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Georgia (HBC), junto con el respaldo financiero del ACE Women's Business Center, se complació en anunciar la llegada del programa ELEVA en español a Tifton, GA, que inició el 4 de mayo.

Este programa de nueve semanas está diseñado para transformar los negocios locales, ampliando habilidades y abriendo nuevas oportunidades para los emprendedores hispanos. Gracias al apoyo de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Georgia y del Hispanic Business Center, 15 empresas recibirán una beca de $2000.

ELEVA ofrece un completo plan de estudios que incluye conocimientos en dirección estratégica, salud financiera, gestión de oportunidades y habilidades de desarrollo. Además, los participantes tienen acceso a consultas personalizadas con expertos, oportunidades exclusivas de networking y exposición en redes sociales.

Con este programa, HBC reafirma su compromiso de empoderar económicamente a las empresas hispanas a través de la educación y el acceso a recursos, apoyando el crecimiento sostenible y rentable de los negocios en la región.
