Con la llegada de febrero, es momento de reflexionar sobre cómo podemos trabajar unidos para enfrentar los retos y aprovechar las oportunidades que nos trae este nuevo año. En una comunidad diversa como la de Middle Georgia, donde convivimos personas de distintas culturas, idiomas y experiencias, tenemos una ventaja única: nuestra diversidad es nuestra fortaleza. Este año, los desafíos como la inflación, el acceso a servicios esenciales y la búsqueda de soluciones justas para temas de inmigración y empleo continuarán siendo una prioridad para muchas familias. Sin embargo, también tenemos el poder de cambiar nuestra realidad, apoyándonos unos a otros y construyendo puentes que nos conecten más allá de las diferencias.
La colaboración entre vecinos, empresas locales, organizaciones sin fines de lucro y líderes comunitarios será clave para fortalecer nuestra región. Local officials celebrate the start of a new urban development phase.
On Tuesday, January 7, Downtown Macon reached a new milestone in its revitalization efforts with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lofts at D.T. Walton project. Led by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), Macon-Bibb County, and their development partners, this event marks the start of a transformative plan to turn a former parking lot into a multi-use development.
“This property sits at the heart of so many of our plans,” said UDA Executive Director Alex Morrison. “Transforming this surface parking lot into a project that generates revenue, benefits downtown businesses, and attracts new residents is a big step toward our revitalization vision.”

Adams, of Mexican heritage, Adams not only proudly represents one of the many Hispanics in the state, but also has been a key figure in how Mayor Lester Miller’s office connects with the Spanish speaking community in the area. Her cultural understanding and dedication reflect her commitment to ensuring that every message is clear, relevant, and meaningful for all sectors of the population.
“Edna has been at the forefront of change in local government communications. Her creativity and commitment are evident in every event, message, and strategy she leads,” emphasized Mayor Miller.

To ensure the safety of near by residents and bystanders, a safety zone was established from 6:00am to 11:00am, guaranteeing that no one was in the vicinity during the implosion. County teams worked with Target Contractors and local agencies to inspect water, gas, and electricity services following the explosion, ensuring no disruptions in the surrounding area.

The immigrant community in Central Georgia is on edge following announcements of mass deportations by the new administration.

After the electoral results this past November, real threats of mass deportations continue to echo among immigrant communities, such as the one in central Georgia. Experts warn that fear and tension could have devastating effects on families, especially children and teenagers, but that’s not all.
“If a raid were to happen or those raids that the new policy mentions, I think both large and small businesses will be affected because people will be afraid…” said Luis Montes de Oca, a merchant from Warner Robins who already experienced this under former President Obama’s administration.
“We witnessed how many businesses had to close during that time, and many people had to move to other states…” he stated.
However, Luis’s concern contrasts with that of

Fear in the community: two faces of the same reality
Carlos Carrillo, a construction worker in Macon, who says he is confident that such events are unlikely to happen.
“He was president eight years ago and said the same thing, and what he said didn’t really happen… We have to wait and see what happens, and in the meantime, we need to be careful and stay out of trouble,” Carrillo said.
These are the two faces of the same reality, visibly opposing views among Latinos in Central Georgia, for whom the upcoming presidency could bring drastic changes to their lives.
The new administration has already appointed key officials to government positions who will be in charge of carrying out raids and operations, even in places of worship and schools, as has been announced—places that were previously respected and not involved for such purposes.
WAIT AND SEE
Patricia Martínez, who works at a grocery store in Fort Valley, Peach County, advises against getting scared by rumors, as each day brings its own challenges.
“I see people calm. Like many say, we have to wait and see what happens; why scare ourselves over nothing,” she said.
The topic of mass deportations is not new. Records from the Department of Homeland Security reveal that in 1930, through the “Wetback Operation,” approximately 1,300,000
undocumented individuals, mostly Mexicans, were deported.
More recently, the Obama administration carried out approximately 3,175,696 deportations and returns during its first term from 2009 to 2012.
In total, Obama oversaw around 5,248,413 deportations and returns of irregular immigrants during his eight years in office.
In contrast, Trump conducted approximately 1,795,888 deportations and returns during his first term between 2016 and 2020.
THREATS TO ALL COMMUNITIES
After the November elections, a series of threats targeted not only immigrants but also African Americans and the LGBT community. The FBI and other agencies reported being aware of these threats.
In Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff urged security agencies to provide swift and concrete responses to their investigations on the matter. However, as of this publication, no results had been released.
“A RACIST RHETORIC”
“With Donald Trump’s campaign, the racist rhetoric against our community, against our immigrant community, increased. With the election results, more of that is coming,” said Jerry González, Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO).
Dr. Pierluigi Mancini, an expert in immigrant community mental health, warns of the emotional toll within the community due to these factors that threaten to destabilize Latino families.
“Immigrant communities will continue to experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and fear because there is so much uncertainty. Once again, we see the possibility of new family separations,” Mancini said.
LATINOS IN GEORGIA
Data from the Pew Research Center estimates that over 12 million undocumented individuals reside in the United States today, making up approximately 5% of the national workforce.
A recent report from the Latino Community Fund of Georgia highlights that the Hispanic population grew by 37.4% between 2010 and 2022, increasing from 800,000 to over one million in the Peach State.
In 2021, the Latino GDP in Georgia reached $52.2 billion, comparable to the total economic output of states like Wyoming or Vermont.
Should the threat of mass deportations materialize, analysts predict that agricultural workers would be among the hardest hit, as an estimated 40% to 50% of them are undocumented—a reality Georgia is not exempt from.

Mancini also warns about the potential consequences, particularly among children and teenagers, if the announced mass deportations take place.
“We are seeing an increase in psychological issues, especially in vulnerable communities, particularly among children,” he noted.
Likewise, Belisa Urbina, who runs Ser Familia, a community support center that offers emotional aid to families and individuals in several counties, expressed concern about a potential increase in suicide cases.
“We have been observing high rates of suicides and suicide attempts for a long time, and what worries us is that this trend could continue to rise…” Urbina said.

Tras los resultados electorales en noviembre pasado, las amenazas reales sobre deportaciones masivas siguen haciendo eco entre las comunidades inmigrantes como la del centro de Georgia y los expertos hablan de que el miedo y la tensión pueden causar efectos devastadores en las familias, especialmente en niños y adolescentes, pero eso no sería lo único. “Si llegara a pasar una redada o esas redas que menciona la nueva política, creo que tanto negocio grande como pequeño como la que dicen, le va a afectar porque la gente va a tener miedo…”, nos dijo Luis Montes de Oca, un comerciante de Warner Robins quien ya sufrió una vez esta experiencia en la administración del expresidente Obama. “Fuimos testigos de cómo muchos negocios tuvieron que cerrar en esa época y mucha gente tuvo que mudarse para otros estados…” afirmó. Pero la preocupación de Luis contrasta con la de
Carlos Carrillo, un obrero de la construcción de Macon, quien afirma estar confiado en que, eso, es probable que no llegue a ocurrir.
“Ya él estuvo hace 8 años como presidente y dijo lo mismo, y no pasó en realidad lo que había dicho…. hay que esperar a ver qué pasa y mientras tanto debemos andar con cuidado sin meternos en problemas”, dijo Carrillo.
Son las dos caras de la misma moneda, las que son visiblemente opuestas entre los latinos del centro de Georgia, para quienes la próxima presidencia, pudiera efectuar cambios drásticos en sus vidas.
La nueva administración ya ha nombrado funcionarios claves en las posiciones de gobierno que se encargarán de efectuar las redas y operativos, incluso en los sitios de cultos y escuelas como ya lo han anunciado, lugares que antes han sido respetados y no involucrados para estos fines.
Pasadas las elecciones de noviembre una serie de amenazas fueron lanzadas no solo contra los inmigrantes, también contra los afroamericanos y la comunidad LGBT. El FBI y otras agencias dijeron estar al tanto de estas. En Georgia, el senador Jon Ossoff instó a los organismos de seguridad a dar respuesta rápidas y concretas sobre sus averiguaciones en este tema, sin embargo, al cierre de esta edición no había resultados sobre la investigación.
“UNA RETÓRICA
RACISTA”
“Con la campaña de Donald Trump aumentó la retórica racista en contra de nuestra comunidad, en contra de nuestra comunidad inmigrante y con los resultados de las elecciones viene más de eso”, nos dijo Jerry González, director ejecutivo de la Asociación de Funcionarios Latinos Electos y Designados de Georgia—GALEO, por sus siglas en inglés.
El doctor Pierluigi Mancini, experto en salud mental de la comunidad inmigrante, advierte que hay una carga emocional en la comunidad debido a todos estos factores que amenazan con una inestabilidad general a las familias latinas.
“Las comunidades inmigrantes van a seguir teniendo niveles altos de stress, ansiedad y temor porque hay mucha incertidumbre, de nuevo estamos viendo que puede haber casos de nuevas
separaciones de familias”, nos dijo Mancini. Mancini alerta sobre las consecuencias que pudiera haber especialmente entre niños y adolescentes, si se dieran las deportaciones masivas anunciadas. “Estamos viendo aumento de problemas sicológicos, especialmente en comunidades vulnerables, especialmente en los niños”, afirmó.
Así mismo, Belisa Urbina quien dirige Ser Familia uno de los centros de ayuda comunitaria que ofrece apoyo emocional a familias e individuos en varios condados, dice estar preocupada por lo que pudiera ser un incremento en los casos de suicidios.
“Nosotros que llevamos viendo tanto tiempo unas tasas de suicidio e intentos de suicidios tan altos, lo que nos preocupa es que esto siga disparándose…”, dijo Urbina.
LOS LATINOS EN GEORGIA
Patricia Martínez, quien trabaja en una tienda de víveres en Fort Valley, en el condado de Peach, dice que no hay que espantarse por lo que se oye, ya que cada día trae su afán.
“Yo veo a la gente tranquila, es como muchos dicen, hay que esperar para ver qué es lo que pasa, para qué nos espantamos por nada”, afirma. El tema de las deportaciones masivas no es nuevo, registros del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional dicen que en 1930 mediante la operación “Espaldas Mojadas”, se deportó especialmente a México, a un 1,300,000 indocumentados.

Un reciente informe del Fondo Latino Comunitario de Georgia advierte que, con un crecimiento del 37.4% entre 2010 y 2022, la población hispana ha aumentado de 800,000 a más de un millón en el estado del Peach. Durante el 2021, el PIB latino en Georgia alcanzó los 52.2 mil millones de dólares, comparable con la producción económica total de estados como Wyoming o Vermont.
De llegarse a materializar la amenaza de las deportaciones masivas los analistas dicen que potencialmente los más afectados serían los trabajadores agrícolas ya que entre un 40% y un 50% de ellos son indocumentados, y Georgia no es ajena a esta realidad.
El Instituto Peterson de Economía Internacional, plantea que, si se concretan los planes de deportación anunciados por Trump, las consecuencias para el crecimiento económico serían negativas, calculándose que para el 2028, el PIB del país, bajaría un 1,2% y disminuirían los puestos de trabajo, afectado a toda nación.

The scholarship program known as the Goodwill Round Up Scholarship Program is made possible thanks to the generosity of shoppers who choose to round up their purchases at the register. These contributions enable Goodwill to directly invest in the education and future of local students.

BRIDGING THE GAP FOR STUDENTS
The primary goal of this campaign is to help students bridge the gap between their financial aid packages and the total cost of their education. According to Goodwill the program’s success is largely attributed to its dedicated cashiers and the ongoing support of shoppers who participate in the round-up initiative.

La Asociación de Funcionarios Latinos Electos y Designados de Georgia—GALEO por sus siglas en inglés y GALEO Impact Fund lanzaron el Informe sobre el voto latino en Georgia 2024, con el que continúan documentando un relato más preciso de la participación de los votantes hispanos en el estado durante el ciclo electoral presidencial de 2024.
Este es el quinto informe que documenta la participación del electorado latino en Georgia desde 2008 y contó con el apoyo del Fondo Educativo NALEO y el Departamento de Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad de Georgia.
LAS LÍNEAS GENERALES DEL INFORME
Según el archivo de datos de votantes de todo el estado y el análisis de este informe, el electorado latino de Georgia ahora tiene 498,298 votantes registrados.

New Report Highlights the Impact of the Latino Vote in 2024
The growth rate of Latino voters between 2020 and 2024 was 30%, according to analyzed data.
The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) and the GALEO Impact Fund released the 2024 Georgia Latino Vote Report, continuing their efforts to provide an accurate account of Hispanic voter participation in the state during the 2024 presidential election cycle.
This is the fifth report documenting Latino voter participation in Georgia since 2008, supported by the NALEO Educational Fund and the University of Georgia’s Department of Political Science.
KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT
According to the statewide voter data file and the analysis in this report, Georgia’s Latino electorate now comprises 498,298 registered voters.
With 113,113 new voters since the 2020 report, the Latino electorate grew by 30%. Of these, nearly 53% turned out to vote in 2024, representing 4.1% of the total votes cast statewide.
As in 2020, most of Georgia’s Latino electorate is under 40 years old; however, voters over 40 had a significantly higher turnout rate. Another continuing trend is that the majority of Latino voters in Georgia are women, with Latinas outperforming their male counterparts in voter participation.
ADDITIONAL FINDINGS
Sixty-four percent of Georgia Latinos voted for Vice President Kamala Harris, while 35% supported President-elect Donald Trump. This demonstrates that Latinos remain a critical demographic for any statewide candidate in Georgia.
While there were 53,254 more registered Latino men in Georgia than in 2020, their turnout percentage slightly declined in 2024. On the other hand, Latina voter participation remained nearly identical to 2020 levels (57.3%).
The ten counties with the highest proportions of registered Latino voters in Georgia in 2020 are the same in 2024. Hall, Cherokee, and Chatham counties were the three counties where Latino turnout rates increased in 2024. Chatham, home to Savannah, now has 12,000 registered Latino voters, with participation increasing by 47.8% since 2008 and over 5,000 voters casting ballots in 2024.
