Macon-Bibb continues to recognize the dedication of its public safety personnel
Public Safety officials receive incentive pay for fourth year in a row
For the fourth consecutive year, the Macon-Bibb administration has awarded financial incentives to public safety employees, allocating 1.8 million dollars in 2024. This program aims to honor their service, improve staff retention, and strengthen community safety.
In August 2021, Mayor Lester Miller and the Commission approved a series of annual incentives for public safety employees, including the Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management Agency, E-911, Lake Tobesofkee Rangers, and Civil Court Sheriffs. In January, the fourth incentive was given to all eligible employees, meaning $1,829,000 was given to 428 people.
“Our public safety team members are extremely essential to our community, and we want them to know how much they mean to us,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “It’s important for us to invest in attracting and retaining the best people and providing them with the best equipment. Public Safety will always be a top priority for us.”
“We are so grateful the Mayor and Commission have committed to public safety incentive pay for the last 4 years,” said Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “This has really helped with retention and morale through our department. It makes our team feels valued.”
“This incentive has been a great way to recognize and reward the loyalty that members of our law enforcement family have shown to our community,” said Bibb County Sheriff David Davis. “The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, like the entire nation, has seen a decline in people joining law enforcement,
which makes the retention of current officers and staff even more vital. This incentive demonstrates the appreciation that our community has for their service and sacrifice, and I believe it has been instrumental in helping us to retain these valued employees.”
”Experience and institutional knowledge are keys to any successful organization. That goes double for Public Safety,” said Emergency Management Agency Director Spencer Hawkins. “The county’s generous incentive plan to ensure our most valued and experienced public safety employees continue
to serve is a major benefit for our community. The incentives are paid to public safety employees in their paycheck of the first full pay period each January, and time of service is calculated by the years employed with one of the groups on December 31 of the previous year.
In January 2024, the payout total was $1,891,000, in January 2023, the payout total was $1,861,000, and in January 2022, the payout total was $1,902,500. In the four years, the incentive has been provided, Macon-Bibb has invested $7,483500 in its public safety employees.

Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Healthcare in Georgia Emory Healthcare and Houston Healthcare have reached a definitive agreement. If regulators sign off, Houston would become part of Emory.
Houston Healthcare, a community-based, not-for-profit health system located in Warner Robins and Perry, Georgia, and Emory Healthcare, a comprehensive academic health system located in Atlanta, announced in early February 2025 that they have approved the initial steps and continuation process for Houston Healthcare to join the Emory Healthcare system. Both the Emory and Houston Healthcare Boards have finalized the terms of a definitive agreement, which specifies the details and provisions of Houston Healthcare’s integration into Emory Healthcare. The health systems have also filed for customary regulatory approvals, a process that will take several months to complete.

In August 2024, the two organizations announced they signed a non-binding Letter of Intent for Houston Healthcare to join Emory Healthcare. Since then, the parties have been working through the due diligence phase, exploring the potential affiliation. With this step finalized and the negotiation of the definitive agreement completed, the organizations will work to finalize all necessary regulatory reviews and approvals. The last step will be closing the transaction, which is anticipated to occur in the coming months.

The Georgia Municipal Association has recognized Warner Robins as a Certified City of Ethics during the 2025 United Cities Summit. This certification ensures that the city upholds high standards of integrity and good governance practices.
The City of Warner Robins was recognized as a Certified City of Ethics by the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) during the 2025 Cities United Summit in Atlanta on January 26. The City of Ethics program which was developed by a panel of business and government leaders in 1999 means the city has adopted and agreed to adhere to a set of key ethical principles and adopt a local ethics ordinance. The ethics ordinance must contain definitions, prohibited conduct and due process for officials accused of violations in areas such as financial disclosures, conflicts of interests and outside employment. The ordinance must also contain

Big Lots Closes Stores Nationwide, Including Several in Georgia
Dozens of locations in Georgia will liquidate their inventory in the coming months, though some may remain open under new lease agreements.
Big Lots, which has been providing products like furniture, home decor and electronics at reduced rates since 1967, recently announced its plans to close most of its locations months after its September 2024 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, with “going out of business” sales planned for the near future in-store and online to “protect the value of its estate,” USA Today reports. Around 200 locations in 15 states plan to remain open.
Big Lots CEO Bruce Thorn explained in a press
release the company’s decision to close hundreds of its stores and expressed his hope that the closures could be reversed if a company sale was completed. “We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale,” he said. “While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to being the GOB process.”

Enrollment will be open from February 24 to March 28, 2025. Selection will be conducted through a lottery system, and results will be announced on April 25.
The Peach County School District has announced the opening of enrollment for the 2025-2026 Pre-K program. Parents and guardians can register their children from Monday, February 24, through Friday, March 28, 2025.
Available Spots by School:
• Byron Elementary: 38 spots
• Hunt Elementary: 20 spots
• Kay Road Elementary: 20 spots
Selection Process:
Enrollment in the Pre-K program is not based on a first-come, firstserved basis but rather through a lottery system. This means that completing the registration within
the given period does not guarantee a spot, but it does ensure participation in the lottery.
Parents and guardians will be notified of the lottery results on Friday, April 25, 2025.
How to Register:
The enrollment link will be available starting February 24, 2025, and will be shared through the official channels of the Peach County School District.
