 Last summer when we were preparing to relaunch this magazine, I commissioned a piece tentatively headed “Are We a Generation of Cowards?”

The premise, of course, was to delve into the psychology behind how we pusillanimously deal with each other on the Internet, and why, unlike our Boomer predecessors (who grew up without laptops with webcams affixed to them or e-mail-synced BlackBerries, and had no choice but to handle their beefs face to face), we have a hard time confronting our antagonists, both in the cyber world and real one, when we feel slighted.

As the first issue was on the cusp of closing, I—cowardly—killed the piece, hiding behind the rationale that perhaps the article was a bit too brazen for an issue that was designed to reintroduce the brand to the computer screens of women like you and serve as your virtual girlfriend to help you navigate college’s sometimes-rocky terrain—not ruffle feathers and fan the flames of selfreflection and insecurity.

But as I surf the ‘Net, I’m reminded of the sad truth that we don’t know how to disagree. We’re not very good debaters, and with as many tools as we have at our disposal, we suck at articulating our points while accepting someone else’s, especially those of which we don’t accept. We’ve lost sight of the agree-to-disagree contention, and when the going gets tough, instead of cooler heads prevailing, we resort to unfollows, blocks and de-friending.

What are we afraid of? Why are we so resistant to disparate ideas? And why, when we were raised to think with our own minds, do we have such a hard time using them? These questions, if

you think about it, can easily percolate over into the style stratosphere, where conformity on college campuses is still championed and individuality is still mocked. Originality, it seems, is revered in a small segment of style bloggers and fashion-obsessed gems who throw caution to the wind and subscribe to my ideal that “it’s called personal style for a reason.”

So as we planned this issue, our annual spring fashion blowout, we strived not only to make accessing the season’s best ideas easier, but to arm you with style tips and practical advice to help you step one well-heeled foot outside the proverbial box.

Isn’t it time we start using it to expose ourselves to new ways of thinking, fresh perspectives and offbeat points of view? Instead of scoffing at the girl who doesn’t like your favorite singer, why not ask her for some suggestions to help expand your iTunes playlist. Or, how about before ripping into one of your ebuddies for remixing last fall’s military jacket with this season’s maxi skirt (see p. 86 for a visual), consider it a lesson learned in smart styling. I guess all I’m trying to say is that whether you’re talking style or substance, we’d all be better served by cultivating an environment that fosters divergent opinions, but most importantly, the channels to maturely discuss the differences minus the backhanded disses and nasty insults. editor, special projects, the most challenging aspect of her role at the magazine is not only identifying compelling individuals to report on, but also dealing with “everyone’s busy schedules and occasional red tape—it can get tiresome.” But the self-proclaimed “artist in all aspects of the word” adds, “meeting new people and forming new contacts catapults the magazine into a different direction and assists with its growth, which is what my main objective is.”

Responsible for overseeing all facets of the cover and helping with Editorin-Chief Michael Jones elevate the content throughout the book, Coney, a 20-year-old graduating senior at Atlanta’s Spelman college, chose eyewear designers Coco and Breezy to grace the first cover under her watch. Explains the New Jersey native, “I booked Coco and Breezy because they exemplify who were are as a magazine. At 20, they are

 “The average college student only has 15 hours of class a week, so it’s important to have tools for the other 153 hours,” explains Brianti Downing, our deputy editor, features, who helped spearhead the implementation of the new sections you’ll see throughout the magazine, along with refining the its point of view. “We’re giving you more tools on how to succeed in your career, how to manage your love life, a more focused view on entertainment and more ways to live a healthy life.”

Downing, a journalism with a concentration on magazine editing/writing and magazine management major and African American studies and English minor, top-edits some of the magazine’s key departments along with assigning and editing our features, tirelessly works with her staff to find the best ideas that appeal to a diverse and always changing

within our audience’s demo and they have created a company that is quietly dominating the fashion industry. Their story gives voice to the plight of many fashion-loving college students and that is to simply find your passion and do it well.”

Despite having a full plate, Coney still finds time to prep for the new season.

“I’m a very urban yet classic person. My get-up will be the ‘all black everything’ with a hint of color. Black isn’t simply a winter color; it should be embraced even in the warm months. But always, always have stilettos.” What can readers in the months to come, the political science (pre-law) and English (media studies) major turns quite evasive: “All I’m going to say is spice, pizazz, and some familiar faces with different names. It’s a riddle that you’ll have to wait to solve! Overall, you’ll enjoy what’s about to be brought to you.” We’ll take her word for it. readership. “The features team has a conference call every month and then we e-mail back and forth until an idea is just the way we want it. It’s a challenge, but it’s also a lot of fun to take a really broad idea and turn it into a really great, focused story for the magazine,” the 22-year-old says.

Serving in a senior role at an up-start like JAYE— “a guidebook” for the college woman’s life—is a juggling act; we’re usually working on three issues at a time, so Downing’s antenna is always up and she’s constantly thinking ahead to the emerging trend or riveting profile to weave into the pages of the magazine. “Of course, we’ll keep the fun stuff, like lists in Agenda, and we’re also adding a couple of entertaining sections we’re really excited about, but they’re still in the planning stages, so I don’t want to give anything away.”  “Neutrals have an undoubted staying power and were all over the spring runways. JAYE’s readers deserve to invest in the pieces that are not only stylish, but practical,” Arriel Ginter, our market director and the brains behind our “Soft & Sweet” fashion feature on page 102,

Ginter, a recently turned 21year-old Palm Beach-native, serves as the magazine’s barometer of what’s hot and what’s not from the runways to the department stores, and she’s excited about what’s to come in the next few issues: “The coming issues will be packed with fashion forward, trend worthy, and amazing stylish pieces. It’s not the fish they were eating, but the way it was prepared. Yes, although fish should show up in a woman’s diet about twice a week, having it battered and fried cancels out any sort of healthful benefits.

The New Marriage Trend Couples in France are living together, swapping rings and raising children-but they’re not married. Instead, more and more couples have been opting to go the civil union route rather than getting a marriage license. Civil unions in France were originally created in 1999 for gay couples but today more straight couples are in them. In a civil union couples can file taxes together and if they decide to separate there are no messy financial burdens.

Digital Magazine Sales Drop When the iPad released last April, it brought promises of a new frontier for print, but it seems as though printed magazines won’t be going to the way-side anytime soon. Digital magazine sales on devices such as the iPad have been down as a whole, some dropping as low as 20 percent.

The Supermarket Scam Supermarkets and grocery stores are tricking you into spending more and buying junk. Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved says that little tricks like the smell of baked bread, cookies at eye level for a child and putting healthy food in the back are all ways to get you to break the bank at the grocery store on items you don’t need.

Slim in Seconds Professional photographer Me Ra Koh recently gave her slimming photo secrets saying that angles and solid colors are more photo flattering. When taking a family photo lean in and avoid wearing the same colors-if everyone is in the same thing everyone seems to blend in together. Bringing Sexy Back

T

he other day, I was talking with a family member about the loss of sexuality for mothers—the societal stereotype that once a woman becomes a mother, she forfeits any aspect of her identity as a sexual being. This ties in with gender norms that tell women that when they become a mom, their life is only about their children and absolutely nothing else. I’ve written other pieces on bisexuality and motherhood or just general musings on how to, as OffbeatMama.com puts it, “integrate your pre-kid identity with your post-kid reality.”

But it’s interesting to see the reactions, mostly from other women, when a mother is out with her children and looks put-together, or dare I say sexy. There seems to be the assumption that because a mother has makeup on or her hair done, she has neglected her child(ren) in some sort of way to make this happen. Or women who maintain a physically fit body get torn down about spending more time in the gym than with their children—but we don’t know their circumstances. Maybe three times a week is “grandma” time so mama fits in a jog, or maybe she and her baby do yoga together, or maybe she’s like me and squeezes in a little pilates floor workout while the baby is having tummy time (Liam actually laughs at me when I’m doing some of the moves. It’s awesome.). Maybe, the underlying issue is insecurity coming from other women because of our culture’s insistence on physical perfection, but it’s very hard to watch women, mothers, tear each other down for taking care of themselves.

Don’t get me wrong, I roll out to the grocery store in yoga pants and tank tops on the days where it’s just too much, but it’s also nice to shower during Liam's morning nap and actually put on some eyeliner for a day. It makes me feel good, puts me in a better mood, and therefore, I’m an all around happier mama. For some women, they are most comfortable in their workout clothes or jeans and a sweatshirt and that is fine. This isn’t about fashion, but the underlying assumption that a woman can’t look good,

or be sexy, when she is a mama because it means that she’s not fully taking care of her kids.

What ties into the physical perception is also the misperception that once a woman has a child they don’t want to have sex anymoreneveragainno. Quite frankly, the issue of sex in our culture is taboo to begin with and I think becomes moreso for a woman who has had a child. What’s funny is that what most people don’t talk about is sexual desire during pregnancy. Myself and many of my friends who have been pregnant had a huge horniness spike while pregnant. Most of us had sex up until the day we went into the hospital to give birth and for a majority of us (once the labor pains went away) have kept up that sexual libido. It’s so interesting to me that the thing that put the baby there in the first place becomes something that we are afraid to talk about. Sex is awesome—before and after having a baby.

Being a mother does not mean the loss of the sexual self (in any form that it comes in for each individual) and it doesn’t mean giving up everything else in life—including personal grooming, if that’s your thing—to be a mama.

The same battle of balance in sexuality is also fought for those mothers who, post-kid, choose to go back to work, or to continue their education, or retain their hobbies, or still go to Burning Man, or still go to music festivals…the list goes on and on.

It’s really all about balance.

And speaking of balance, I have that thesis thing to write and should probably shower before class. Balance, balance, balance… 

It’s so interesting to me that the thing that put the baby there in the first place becomes something that we are afraid to talk about.

Shop Talk: The Target Collection Continues Target will be offering 34 dresses from 17 of the brand’s GO International designer collaborations to customers both online and in stores, starting March 13 through April 10. Between one and three dresses from each participating designer should be available with the exclusion of Patrick Robinson, creative director of Gap stores who is said to be seen a competitor to the Target brand.

No. 1 We may be in a technologically advanced generation with lots of new gadgets and inventions at our fingertips, but there is one thing us women still ponder and just can’t seem to get quite right: Finding the best bra and undergarments to flatter our figure.

There’s a huge selection of undergarments—different styles and colors to chose from—but not enough attention is paid to the significance of what a quality foundation can do for your appearance and they way it can make you feel.

The right skivvies can make or break your look. Think of your underthings as the soul of your clothes; if they’re not looking good on the inside, you’re not on the outside.

If you can’t remember the last time you updated your undies arsenal and there are any signs of discoloring, fading, or form then follow our tips so your favorite spring trends will shine. Keep in mind:  Make sure that your bra’s not painful in any way and leaves no indentations on your body after wear.  There should be no lumps and bumps that will make your outer layers look dowdy.  Also, no constant need to reposition the bra due to discomfort or because of perspiration  Finally, there should be definition and form, but still be breathable at the same time. >>

A Guide by Cup Size: For A Cups: Most importantly: This size still needs support too! A smooth cup underwire can give you a boost and looks undetectable and polished under more fitted tops. Demi-cups are another great option as well. Push-up bras can also create great cleavage for special evenings and occasions.

For B cups: A tiny bit of padding, a smooth cup, and a good supportive underwire are all you need. For creating a bit more cleavage, a clasp front push up bra or a demi-cup style are some other great options.

For C Cups: A slightly wider strap helps with heavier lifting. Also, look for an underwire to offer extra support. Racer-back styles offer more lift and hold; and if you don’t want to add more bulk, but want smoothness with lots of coverage, look for a thinner padding.

For D Cups: You want generous coverage, wider straps, and underwire to get all the support you need. Find a style with pretty feminine touches such as lace on the straps and minimizers (bras that offer firm support)—they are perfect to wear with thin tees or sheer tops.

Going Under Cover Before you make your spring shopping list and check it twice, do yourself a favor and invest in a bra and foundation garments that will flatter your body and accentuate your favorite wardrobe staples. How to Measure Yourself

Take measuring tape and measure the length around your ribcage directly below your bust making sure it’s straight and flat across your back and parallel to the floor. Pull the tape snug and round the measurement to the closet whole inch either up or down. If the number is even add 4 inches and if it is odd add five. The final number will be your band size.

Standing with your arms at your sides, measure around your body at the fullest part of your bust, parallel to the floor. Round this number up or down to the nearest whole inch. Subtract your band size measurement from the second, larger measurement. The difference is your cup size.

There are exceptions that accommodate each individual body type but this is a basic guide to find an estimate of your size. However, leave the details to the pros when you actually begin your shopping journey!

 You will need to update your bra wardrobe according to certain changes in your life. These changes include: Weight changes—before and after having a baby—recovering from surgery or illness, etc.  When shopping for underclothes, go when you have nothing else on your agenda and you’re in particularly good spirits. It can take a while to find what you are looking for so that you feel satisfied with your purchase. You don't want to do it when you are rushed last minute, especially for a special occasion.  You usually get what you pay for.

Treat a bra purchase as an investment piece that you'll get the most wear and comfort ability out of.  Educate yourself. Know what you are shopping for and research it. Not that you can't pick up a little something extra or special on your trip if your budget allows, but knowing the type of bra you’re looking for style or coverage wise, takes much of the added stress and work out of your shopping experience.

s a fashion writer, it has always been my dream to go to fashion week in New York City.

I would flip through glossy magazines and stare at fashion blogs in envy, looking at all the lucky reporters who got to see the hottest runway fashion. However, as a young writer just starting out (roughly three years ago now) I knew no one would want me—a small town girl from Connecticut—to cover such an elite event. That is, until I got my big break.

After applying to what felt like hundreds of freelance positions with fashion magazines and websites, I was finally contacted. A new magazine that recently launched said they received my résumé and wanted me to write a feature on a designer. I immediately replied and said I could do even better. I would write about a few designers who would be at Nolcha Couture Fashion Week during fall 2009, as long as I got the OK from them. The magazine said they would give me a shot and I was accepted into my first ever Fashion Week extravaganza.

Preparing for New York Fashion Week is like none other. As women, we tend to have many memorable events where we need to doll ourselves up, like prom or a wedding, but this was different. To be honest I was a bit intimidated about what I was going to wear, since I would be around some of the best dressed people in the world. I couldn’t possibly only show up in a Forever 21 dress and Aldo heels now could I? The problem was my knack for being a young and starving writer didn’t help my lust for designer duds to show up in, so I did what any girl in my position would do.

I focused solely on my shoes. After all if you are caught in a good pair of shoes, your outfit is just the icing to your style. So I bought myself a simple little black dress from White House/Black Market and saved my pretty pennies for a pair of hot pink strappy Manolo Blahniks. I know, I know. Manolos? But seriously I needed something to make an entrance and they were on sale!

here is no way to prepare for a day that is completely jampacked with fashion runway shows and designer interviews. After all of my preparation of looking myself in the mirror to remind the girl starring back at me to “stay cool” or “always check those pretty shoes for toilet paper after your exit the bathroom,” I was still not even

After relentlessly pursuing an opportunity to cover the collections at New York Fashion Week, JAYE Fashion News Writer Carissa Chesanek got her opportunity close to feeling prepared. My hands felt clammy the minute I walked up to the elegant Waldorf Astoria and the moment I went to the media table to get my press pass I felt as though I might faint with excitement.

Walking into the room where the runway stood was beyond what I could have imagined. The music was booming from the stereo and women with fur jackets and men in suits were being ushered to their seats. The front row seats were already reserved with names boldly written on cards that sat delicately on the chairs. I, however, had to sit in the back with the rest of the press and photographers.

The show started about a half-hour late (which I have come to know is actually the norm) due to people still mingling in the lobby with their champagne and others moving about trying to find their seats. I was surprised as to how the people around me were so friendly and willing to work with me on future events. I got at least four invitations from other media outlets >>

the list and photographers to conduct writing for some upcoming stories. I never expected there to be such a calm in the air among people who were clearly competing with one another.

Once the first show started, the lights dimmed and the music increased even louder. The announcer practically sang the designers name when making their introductions, and the models cascaded along the runway stage like they owned it. Effortlessly they pounded their slender legs onto the stage with each step, giving attitude as they make their way all the way to the back, where I was, quickly

snapping photos like part of the paparazzi. The models twirled their thin bodies as they passed by one another, with their elegant gowns floating along the stage. It was a sight I have only witnessed in the comfort of my home or in a magazine, but now it is all just a few feet away.

During the half an hour breaks in between each show, everyone ventured to the hallway and lobby for drinks or to get photographed by people like me. However, I was able to sneak myself in some of the photos with the designers (simply stripping free from my press pass). I don’t think

I have ever smiled so big; I was happy and not afraid to show it.

The hustle and bustle of running around like a chicken with its head cut off, trying to get photos and contact information from designers along with casting short interviews was all completely intense and chaotic. But I wouldn’t have changed it for the world.

Now that I have been to more fashion shows as my career has grown, I look back at that very moment and realize that is when it all really began for me—the moment a young fashion writer gets a chance to go to fashion week, their whole world changes. 

Rango Johnny Depp is Rango in this computer-animated film, about a chameleon who gets his long-awaited chance to be a hero when he arrives in the Old West town of Dirt. Rango establishes himself as a “man of the law” and protects the town from bandits. Also lending their voices to the film are Isla Fisher and Timothy Olyphant. Rango shoots into theaters March 4.

Kung Fu Panda 2 Jack Black returns as the voice of Po, a kung-fu fighting panda bear. Po is living his dream as The Dragon Warrior with fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five. His life changes when a villain’s plots to use a secret weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. Po must uncover the secrets of his origins to save his people and kung fu. Kung Fu Panda 2 hits theaters May 27.

Cars 2 Cars 2, the sequel to the acclaimed 2006 film, heads overseas with star race car Lightning McQueen and tow truck Mater competing in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. The road to the competition undergoes many unexpected detours, turns, and bumps when Mater becomes a spy. by Brianti Downing On March 11, check out Forks Over Knives, a documentary that investigates the theory that most of “diseases of affluence”—diabetes, obesity, etc.— could be prevented by eliminating animal-based and processed foods from our diets.

In Sing You Home, Jodi Picoult focuses on a lesbian couple fighting for the right to start a family. What’s awesome is that the book comes with a CD of music that readers are supposed to imagine was written by the main character.

When I first saw this quote circulating around the Internet, it made sense, but I never thought about why it seemed so plausible. Obviously, falling in love is a little scary, but fairy tale circumstances make it seem like a walk in the park. Being forced into slavery by your stepmother, kidnapped by a beast and sacrificing your voice to meet a man who doesn’t really know you exist aren’t really situations most of us encounter every day.

Fairy tales aren’t just words on pages for the product of the second-generation Disney Princesses, which spans from The Little Mermaid (1989) to Mulan (1998). Community (NBC) This comedic ensemble, including The Soup’s Joel McHale, delivers clever jokes and astounding chemistry between its main characters, a study group at a community college.

Fashion Police (E!) For those of you who missed Joan Rivers’ red carpet quips, look no further than Fashion Police. Intervention (A&E) This harrowing reality show documents people with various addictions and its affect on their families.

Every episode comes together with an intervention between the family and their addicted loved one.

Deadly Women (Discovery ID) In a twist in the true crime genre, Deadly Women is a show that lets the viewer know women aren’t always what they seem. Hollywood isn’t done giving us fairy tales. This month alone, there are two live-action films being released that are based on fairy tales—Beastly (based on Beauty and the Beast) and Red Riding Hood (based on Little Red Riding Hood). Guess what?

They’re aimed at second-generation adults. As if manipulating our childhoods wasn’t enough, they’ve come for our adulthood. As we sit in the theater with our overpriced popcorn and drink, their storylines will remind us of the two dominant themes in fairy tales: “When You Know, You Know” (Beauty and the Beast) and “Whatever It Takes” (Little Red Riding Hood). Oddly, we latch onto those messages and ignore the striking reality of what we’re actually watching.

When You Know, You Know Belle was kidnapped. It’s a typical choice to ignore that fact or to not realize it when you’re younger. But it’s the truth. While the version by the Brothers Grimm features a nicer beast who allows Belle to go home for a short time and visit her family, Disney danced the fine line between misunderstood and murderous with their beast. Instead of feelings of love for the beast, it seems like Belle had Stockholm syndrome, a psychological term for people who identify with their kidnappers. But when you know, you know; and Belle definitely seemed to know.

Whatever It Takes Red Riding Hood was getting to Grandmother’s house by any means necessary. A wolf wasn’t stopping her, or even her grandmother in the end. If you see cookie-cutter cartoons your mom bought you or read to you from a cute little book the library that’s what you’ll take from it. But if you watch the play Into the Woods (there’s an excellent recorded version available), you realize what it’s really about—girls being preyed upon by men when they went off alone. What we take from it, possibly to our benefit, is to do whatever it takes to get what you want.

If you watch any reality television shows this is the dominant idea.

What I can say is that fairy tales aren’t real. They’re a lot of fun and as a huge lover of children’s literature (I once wrote a 12-page paper on Winnie-the-Pooh; I see their worth.)

They encourage imagination and are great forms of escapism, but when you close the book or turn off the television, they don’t really apply. They’re called tales because they’re not real.

But your life is, so live it by ideals that fit your life. ■

Are you going to drink that?

Wash your hair with the drink of the day: beer. We’re not joking around here. Forget your worries about someone spilling (or pouring) their drink on you. Little do they know they’re doing you a huge favor. Here’s what we suggest:  Let a bottle of beer sit out until it’s room temperature, or pouring this over your head may be a bit more difficult than it already is.  When you get in the shower, wet your hair. Ring it out a bit after doing so, to ensure that your hair is not sopping wet and dripping.  Here’s the hardest part: pouring.

Take your room temperature bottle of beer, close your eyes, and pour it over your head. Let it sit for a few minutes as if it were a deep conditioning treatment, and rinse thoroughly. Feel free to condition your hair afterwards if the smell bothers you, but don’t shampoo.

Why? Beer contains malt and hops, two ingredients that are extremely rich in protein. Your hair craves this.

The added protein enhances the body of your hair, while simultaneously repairing damage. That’s not all, though.

Blend half of an avocado, honey, and some all-natural yogurt together, and apply to your face, your hair, or both. Leave on as long as you desire, probably within a 10 or 20 minute time frame. Rinse with warm water.

 Cucumber: Nothing is more cliché than cucumber rounds over your eyelids, but we need to reiterate this. If you’ve never tried it, now’s your chance. Staying out late has never felt so good…if you have cucumber slices within reach the next morning. Not only do the chilled cucumbers sooth your tired eyes, but they’ll remove dark circles by lightening the skin. Keep a few slices in the fridge before you go out at night, and apply them when you wake up. No one will know how tired you are!

The cold of winter has melted away and Spring Break is just around the corner, which means the gym will be most people’s second home as they prep for their adventures in beachy destinations.

We know that it’s hard to stay glam while breaking a sweat, but it’s definitely not

impossible. We caught up with the fabulously fit and gorge Atlanta-based beauty blogger and makeup vixen Joy Perry to talk fitness and beauty.

JAYE: Some women refuse to exercise because they don’t want to mess up their hair. What’s your take on this?

Joy Perry: Your health is a lot more important than your hairstyle! I suggest keeping a low maintenance cut and style, so you can workout and not have to fuss with it.

JAYE: Is it OK for women wear makeup during a workout? Do you recommend it?

JP: I don’t recommend anything on your skin while you’re working out. I’m not an esthetician, but I do know that when you’re sweating, you don’t want anything clogging your pores. That’s the quickest way to get a breakout.

JAYE: What products do you recommend, if a woman does wear makeup to the gym?

JP: Maybe she can wear a light moisturizer. No foundation, but maybe a little eyeliner.

JAYE: What’s the best hairstyle for women to wear while working out?

JP: I like a low ponytail. It keeps your hair out of your face, and doesn’t shift while you’re moving around.

JAYE: Who are some of your favorite clients that you’ve been able to work with as a makeup artist?

JP: I’ve actually gotten to do makeup for (or “groom”) Tony Horton, the creator of P90X. It was really cool because I was like, “Hey, I do your workouts!”

JAYE: What’s in your gym bag that’s beauty related?

JP: Nothing! I’m there to sweat, not look pretty.

JAYE: What’s your biggest health or beauty secret?

JP: Working out in itself is a huge boost in blood flow, which keeps your skin looking good.

JAYE: What’s your favorite facial cleanser post-workout and why?

JP: I always use Cetaphil facial cleanser. It really depends on your skin type, but I like it because it cleanses without over drying my skin. My skin type is normal, so I don’t want to cause oiliness by over drying it.

From a Runaway to the Runway

 Last fall during a much-needed mini-vacay to New York City, I was ecstatic to receive an invite to an advanced screening of the film Desert Flower, at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. I must admit, at this point I had not heard of the film or the best-selling international novel, but after a little research on the book, I cleared my schedule and made it a priority to attend this event.

The film, written and directed by Sherry Norman, gives an intimate look at the life of the Somali-born model, author and human rights activist, Waris Dirie. The movie travels in sequence between Dirie’s life as a 20something living in London headed to supermodel status and her adverse childhood in Somalia. When Dirie was five years old she went through female genital mutation (FGM), by 13 she was forced into marriage to a man about four times her age, and shortly after she escaped to ended up in London, where she worked as a housemaid, McDonald’s employee and was eventually discovered by a photographer, and the rest is fashion history.

Some critics have likened this film, which stars supermodel Liya Kebede, Sally Hawkins and Anthony Mackie, to a modern-day Cinderella story.

Although, I can Liya understand their Kebede and Waris sentiments, I view Dirie. it as a call to action against female genital mutation. FGM is defined as a pro-

cedure that “comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons,” according to the World Health Organization. This procedure is usually performed before puberty but has become increasingly performed on babies, some of which are days old.

FGM is usually performed anesthetic-free by professional circumcisers (women who are enjoying a high reputation in their societies), but it is also performed by traditional midwives, and occasionally by healers, barbers, nurses or doctors trained in Western medicine. Sanitation usually isn’t a focus during these procedures and knives, scissors, razor blades or pieces of broken glass are used as instruments among others, according to the Waris Dirie Foundation Web site.

Female Genital Mutilation happens primarily in Africa, in particular in Northeastern, Eastern and Western Africa. However, it also takes place in the Middle East, in Southeast Asia—and also among immigrants in Europe.

The impact of this practice is sobering and astonishing: “An estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM,” according to the World Health Organization.

Empowered by sharing her personal experience with

beauty diary FGM for the first time with the media, in 1997, Dirie ended her modeling career to focus on her campaign to fight female circumcision. A year later the novel Desert Flower debuted, and was followed by the founding of the Waris Dirie Foundation in 2002. In 2010 it was renamed the “Desert Flower Foundation” to reflect the broader approach to addressing female genital mutilation though economic projects in Africa, according to the foundation’s Web site. Dirie, 38, is currently the UN spokeswoman against female circumcision.

There’s no word on the film’s exact release in the U.S., but it has been picked up by National Geographic Films. Check out the official Desert Flower movie trailer at www.desertflower-movie.com. a good night’s rest balances the non-stop stresses in our lives, and while we know this to be true, we’ve also found it’s easier said than done—until now. Here, the latest tricks to help you recharge After a long day of school, work, homework and attempting a social life somewhere in between, the last thing you want is to finally lie down and not be able to get some shut-eye. It happens to everyone, but it’s terrible for your mental and physical health. While it may seem hopeless in the moment, there are things you can do to help you get to sleep quickly. Once you’re able to stop counting sheep and start dreaming, you’ll feel rested, energized and happier by the next morning.

Dr. Jacob Swartz, a psychology lecturer at the University of Tennessee who specializes in sleep studies, says getting a good night of rest starts when you wake up. One of the biggest factors keeping 18 to 24 year olds from getting to sleep

is all of the things this age group puts into their bodies and all the things they keep out.

“Students wake between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. typically but what most students do is grab a big cup of coffee and nothing for breakfast,” Dr. Swartz says. “If they do eat breakfast, there is nothing healthy involved. It’s a donut or a cereal bar.”

He says a bad start to the day is hard to make up. It means eating something unhealthy for lunch to help kick up energy levels and guzzling down another cup of coffee just to make it to dinner. Dr. Swartz says getting a good night of sleep, starts in the morning.

“Sugary foods are funny. You get a quick burst of energy and you think you’re full but in reality, you are just setting up your body for a crash that will leave you hungrier and more tired that you were,” Dr. Swartz says.

What’s a balanced breakfast?

Swartz says add fruit to waffles, pancakes or oatmeal. If you’re on the go, grab a muffin and have a container of fresh fruit for after an early morning class. That way you aren’t tempted to pick up a honey bun on the run.

“Students are really busy. They have hundreds of things to do and rarely get a quarter of them done. Set realistic goals so you aren’t getting ready for bed and suddenly running off to write a 20-page essay due the next morning.”

Keeping an agenda or calendar will help to relieve the stress that comes with remembering last-minute items.

Sit down in the evening, look at your agenda and write out a to-do list for the next day. Then stick to it.

What you don’t dream about is how the heat makes you sweat and how forgetting to swipe on the deodorant can put you in a particularly uncomfortable situation. There are also other things antiperspirants brings to mind, like white chalky stains on your clothing and clumps in your arm pits, or even worse when it stops working.

You don’t have to live through the trauma of body odor. There are natural alternatives to deodorant that leave you smelling great and won’t leave streaks on your favorite new shirt. What causes unpleasant odors are bacteria that mix with the sweat your body naturally releases. Getting

 Baking Soda can be used for nearly anything and keeping you fresh and dry is one of its many talents. There are two methods to using baking soda as a deodorant alternative. The first is simply dabbing it under your arms after a shower.

Some people experience slight irritation from the grit of baking soda and it can be substituted for corn starch.

 Rock-Crystal Deodorant is an all-natural deodorizer. Most health stores carry this deodorant, which contains natural compounds that eliminate odor. It comes both scented and unscented. The only draw back to Rock Crystal deodorants is that they don’t always prevent

perspiration. Many users say that putting a little powder after swipes of deodorant will eliminate any wetness.  Lemon Juice has many of the same deodorizing powers as baking soda. It eats bacteria and leaves a pleasant smell that won’t interfere with perfumes. It’s also very simple.

After showering, give your underarms time to completely dry. Then pour the lemon juice on a cotton ball and apply it to your underarms. Let it dry and you will be odor free for a full day. For girls that have tried the real thing and all the alternatives but still suffer in the summer time, the cure for your problem is to simply wash up. In the morning after a shower, use rubbing alcohol or an astringent to keep the odor-causing bacteria down. If you know your deodorant only works for a few hours in the

summer heat, buy travel-sized wet wipes and travel-sized deodorant to carry in your purse for wash ups during the day. Use a paper towel to dry your underarms, tear one of the wet wipes in half for each arm and rub them under your arms for a few seconds each. Use a clean paper towel to dry your arms. t’s that time of year again and all you can think about is enjoying the beach with your best girlfriend. Before you can even force yourself to try on a bathing suit there is one thing you need to do, exercise. We’ve got five steps to get you in shape for bikini season.

Make a schedule, grab a partner and stick to it. It’s extremely important to make a plan of action and keep to it. Set aside time to workout. Establish a time frame of personal goals to accomplish. Workout with a partner and keep each other accountable and motivated.

Start moving. Any

type of cardiovascular activity, such as running, walking or jogging will help you shed those extra pounds. Run at least four to five times a week for 15 to 30 minutes.

Fifteen minutes should be just enough time to keep your body toned and anything over will help eliminate those extra pounds. Running outdoors or indoors on a treadmill has the same effect. The treadmill allows you to regulate your speed and set different paces. However, running outdoors provides an opportunity for you to enjoy the scenery but stay safe by running when it’s light outside in a highly populated area, like a park. Be sure to drink plenty of water and remain hydrated before, during and after any physical activity.

Take a class. Activities such as skating, dancing, boxing and basketball can all help keep you in shape. Not only do these different activities provide cardiovascular activity but they also help you tone and stretch muscles. It is important to choose a class that provides both cardiovascular and toning activities. Invite your friends and take two to three classes throughout the week. Be sure to pay close attention to your body. Don’t exceed your capabilities.

Focus on toning. Toning muscles in your body is essential to get in shape. Squats, push-ups, crunches and pull-ups will help tone your muscles.

At least three or four reps, working each muscle after a cardiovascular activity will help you to tone. If you’re looking for a method to add more of a challenge to your regular workout, add weights.

Weights increase the difficulty of your reps while strengthening each individual muscle. It’s extremely important to not work the same muscles every day because you can damage them. You need an opportunity to relax and regroup. Try to work a different group of muscles each day.

Says the article penned by reporter Blake Ellis, you can already use your iPhone, Droid or BlackBerry to buy a hotdog at the ballgame, buy your Starbucks latté, or give a friend a few bucks by Bumping phones. But by the end of the year you may not even think twice about reaching for your phone to pay at the register instead of fumbling for your credit card.

“Your plastic card hasn’t changed since the age of the vinyl records,” said Michael Abbott, CEO of Isis, a new mobile payment network. “This is the chance to bring payments forward from the plastic age and the vinyl records age to the digital age.”

Do use protection. It’s safest to stay with your group, but if you do end up hooking up with a guy in his hotel room, be safe about it; even if he’s someone in your group. If you plan on having a spring break fling, pack condoms in your suitcase. Also, look into emergency post-coital contraceptives, like Plan B, in case you get caught in the moment. Only a condom will protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.

Do be active. Look for some fun activities to do on your break, like a morning yoga class at your resort or a pick-up volleyball game on the beach. When you’re exploring your spring break destination, instead of getting a cab, walk as often as possible.

Do research your travel destination. A quick search of the Internet will help you learn about the culture, including any problems, like crime or political unrest, that may effect your trip. You also need to know laws that tourists may get arrested for, like the drinking age. U.S. laws and constitutional rights don’t carry over to different countries.

Do blend in. There are shady characters who make a pretty good living from mugging tourists during spring break. Keep your things in a bag as often as possible and learn key phrases from the local language, so you don’t depend on a translation guide. Some studies also found that tourists tend to talk louder when they’re lost, so watch your voice level.

Do register your trip. Register your foreign trip with the U.S. Department of State by visiting https://travelregistration.state.gov. It’s a free service that will make it easier for the U.S. embassy or consulate to find and assist you if there’s a natural disaster or any civil unrest during your trip. Make an itinerary of your plans and leave copies with your family, so they know where you are in case of an emergency.

Do Check Your Medical Insurance Plan. Check with your carrier to make sure your health insurance will cover costs abroad, including medical evacuation. If not, ask about traveler’s insurance. If you take prescription medicine, bring it in the original container you got from the pharmacist to avoid problems with drug trafficking. If your meds are confiscated at the airport, find out the generic versions of it and get your doctor’s contact information, so you can get replacements during your vacation.

Don’t stray away from your group. Natalee Holloway went missing after she strayed away from her group on a trip to Aruba with her high school. Always stay with the people you came with and make you sure you keep an eye on one another. That hot guy you met at the bar may seem nice, but he can be dangerous.

Don’t leave your drink unattended. Adding to the obvious fears about date-rape drugs being slipped into your Long Island Ice Tea, a man in Seattle, Wash. was arrested for ejaculating in a woman’s water bottle.

If a guy wants to buy you a drink, go to the bar with him and keep an eye on him and the bar tender when your drink is being mixed. If you have to go to the bathroom finish your drink first or take it with you. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t drink too much. You should enjoy your alcohol if you choose to drink, but sipping on drinks from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. for six days can definitely take a toll on your health. A quick and easy way to find out if your drinking habits during spring break are out of control and the repercussions it may cause is to take a free screening survey at www.alcoholscreening.org.

Don’t be too nice to locals. The film Taken isn’t completely fictional. Women are kidnapped and sold as sex slaves every day, adding to the estimated 12.3 million people, according to the U.S. State Department’s 2010 Trafficking in Persons Report, who are forced into prostitution around the world. It’s fine to ask questions about the culture, but be firm about the boundaries that separate you from the people who live in the community. Don’t be mean, but don’t be too trusting either.

Keep your eyes peeled because you never know who you’ll see in this celebrity hot spot.

Restaurants: Save money, while savoring food at Big Pink Diner, La Sandwicherie (a French Deli) or Hiro’s Sushi Express.

If you’re 21-plus, munch on a cheese breast sandwich and sip your favorite drinks at the famous Wet Willie’s.

Hotels: No need to spend excessively just to sleep. The Villa Paradiso or The Loft Hotel are quaint, pretty and affordable.

omewhere in the world, there’s a man or woman who thinks looks do not matter. He or she walks around under that impression that his or her personality will shine through when finding love and relationships. The naiveté of these types is tragic. The reality is, looks do matter in the dating game.

Imagine yourself at a friend’s party—chattin’ it up and doin’ your thing on the dance floor. You’re in your element and a stranger from across the room approaches you and asks you to dance. You exchange pleasantries and phone numbers.

The chances that this random stranger thought, “This girl’s personality has me intrigued!” are highly unlikely.

Of course, you may come off as fun, friendly and energetic because you’re conversing and grooving, but he’s approaching you because his visual interests have been piqued.

He likes what he sees—everything but your personality. He sees hair. He sees face. He sees body. He takes note of your outfit, and the confidence and sexiness you exude through your ensemble. Because he likes what he sees on the outside, he is curious about getting to know what is on the inside.

Percentage wise, physical attraction is 50 percent of the relationship and personality is 50 percent of the relationship. Studies constantly show that women value the total package and are less concerned with looks. Your appearance will get you in the door, but personality will keep you there. When you turn old and gray, or the libido goes down, your sense of humor and irreplaceable charisma shines through.

You never know when and where you’ll run into your next Friday night date so be prepared. Wear clothes that fit and highlight your best assets (Not all your assets at once!). Dress appropriately for the occasion. Do not be someone you are not. The unease will show as bad as mom jeans.

Sunglasses, or shades in their vernacular term, can tell stories. They tell stories of the elite, the witty, the quirky, the introverted, the party-girl, and even the “I got them for five dollars from the vendor across the street” persona. We’ve all seen her rushing from the train stop or hustling off to class on a sunny day. Better yet, we’ve all been that girl. However, the true value in the tale is what lies behind the lenses. Corianna and Brianna Dotson, better known as Coco and Breezy, are setting out to tell a story through their self-titled sunglass and accessory line.

onned in all black, shaved heads with blue accents, vibrant lipstick shades, and to-die-for wedges, Coco and Breezy have conceived their own individualistic style, but their uniqueness blends in with the daring New York City culture. Hailing originally from Minnesota, the identical twins, given their nicknames as infants, set out on a mission to change the lives of the audience for whom they create, while changing their own.

Before their pilgrimage to New York, the twin designers tried their hands at fashion in their hometown. At the age of nine, Coco and Breezy were already designing clothes, albeit for their Barbies. Often scolded for “messing up their good clothes,” as Coco describes it, the pair continued to reinvent their look. A love of fashion even led them to do retail in Minnesota as sales representatives. “[In Minnesota], we were really to ourselves and weren’t exposed to a lot of fashion,” Coco recalls. “We always loved to be different, and it was very rare to see ‘real fashion’ in Minnesota. We knew that we couldn’t stay there any longer if we wanted to progress in the fashion world, so we made that move to NYC.”

The Coco and Breezy world seems like a fun but daunting one, as they rarely get any sleep because they are always “on the grind.” Their fun stems from their artistic drive. With a new spring collection in the works, it is only right to ask what looks to go for this upcoming fashion season.

After two successful collections, Gemela Amor and 20/20, they are now gearing up for Spring 2011 with their “WearAble Art.” “Our new Spring ‘11 Collection will be accessories, not only eyewear,” the pair announces. “Also to go along with that, we have a kid’s collection called ‘C&&B 4 Kids.’ We are super excited about our new collection. It is something very different and it’s called Wear-able Art. We have a few pieces that can be worn a few different ways.”

Stepping out of the box is a phrase that completely resonates when talking to Coco and Breezy. Creating a unisex sunglass and accessory line was “stepping out of the box” when in today’s fashion word, being contained by gender is safe. Creating a custom, couture fashion line was “stepping out of the box” because who wants to look the same nowadays?

To a large segment of the fashion world, Coco and Breezy are the epitome of Americanism: Self-made women who have devoured their piece of the American pie.

Luckily, we have not seen the last of them. Says Breezy: “We want to travel the world, and to different schools, and groups of people to share our story, and inspire the world.

friends don’t let friends commit these these texting infractions

Since we’re so into twiddling away on our smartphones (95 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds send or receive text messages, according to a Qwasi News report), we thought we’d address five blunders we’re tired of seeing, along with solutions

“yes, you look fat in those jeans, lol!”

Adding “LOL” to the end of an insult, back-handed compliment, or low blow doesn’t diminish the sting. Instead of straddling the fence, mosy on over to pure-bitch territory and tell your BFF the truth.

Our recommendation: “Those jeans look nice, but there’s an online magazine called JAYE that has tons of alternatives that are flattering and budget friendly. I’ll send you the link!”

“wAnNa MeEt FoR lUnCh In ThE sTuDeNt UnIoN?”

If you don’t see a problem with this elementary-style texting method, then you should probably…well, go back to elementary school.

Our recommendation: Remove text messaging from your cell phone plan—you don’t deserve it.

We’re still trying to figure out who launched the pretend-the-letter-Q-is-a-letter-G trend, but we’re here to set the record straight: “Q” and “G” are two completely separate letters—not interchangeable. Get it? Got it? Good.

Our recommendation: You guessed it: Remove text messaging from your cell phone plan.

“Hey girl, you texted? What’s up?”

Seven words: If I text you, don’t call me. Few things are more irritating than texting a girlfriend, only to have the message ignored and followed up with a voice call.

Our recommendation: Respond to damn text messages. Didn’t you get the memo? We don’t talk on the phone anymore—text, tweet, BBM, FaceTime or nothing at all.

Time is of the essence, and the three seconds I wasted opening and reading your message are precious moments I’ll never get back.

Congratulations.

Our recommendation: Call me. But don’t be surpirsed if I don’t answer.
