Does Bigger Mean Better? Sandwiches in a can: darn good thinking or downright disgusting?

canned goods? The Candwich is the newest addition to an ongoing list of absurd food products made in America. Coming in four flavors (peanut butter and grape jelly, peanut butter and strawberry jelly, pepperoni pizza and barbeque chicken), the product is aimed for people on the go. The unique sandwich canister is designed to be durable in different modes of transportation, whether it’s a hike, a quick jaunt to class or biking. The product does not require refrigeration and claims to be a perfect emergency food source in the case of a natural disaster. Consumers will be able to buy candwiches in four packs or by the can.

A $35 Laptop? Yes Please! An Indian research team has created a computer for the price of a concert ticket India has developed the world’s cheapest laptop, a $35 Linuxbased touch-screen computer designed for students and loaded with Internet browing capabilities, video conferencing and more. The computers are expected to be introduced internationally in 2011 and prices could drop down to as low as $10. Now that’s what we call financial aid!

let’s talk about sex According to Yahoo!, a study proves high school students who were in a committed, sexual relationship actually do no worse, or better academically than students who do not have sex. The study showed students who hook up, have sex without any emotional commitment, do poorer academically and have more school related problems. Those who are in a committed relationship tend to do better in school because they may find support and comfort from their partner.

Expanding the size of theater seats and designing plussized clothes for toddlers are just a couple of ways businesses have inflated with the times Movie theaters and auditoriums across America are beginning to accommodate the ever-growing size of movie patrons by installing larger theater seats. Previously, theater seats have only grown two inches from 1900 to 1990, but in the past 20 years another inch has been added on, making seats 22-inches wide. The seat adjustments are not only due to weight increases but from height increases as well. Unfortunately, bigger theater seats mean higher theater costs and fewer seats per theater. The size and cost of auditoriums have grown 30 percent since 1990. The wide seats can also cause patrons to be more likely to slouch in their seats and lose focus on the films.

British retailer, Marks & Spenser have begun carrying plus-sized clothing for toddlers. The garments have two-and-a-half extra inches added to the waist. Childhood obesity is on the rise in the United Kingdom where one in four children are considered obese. The line offers boot cut pants and other items that are proportionally flattering to larger shapes for children ages 3 to 16. Marks & Spenser defend the line saying that it is a result of customer demand and continuation of the line depends on the customer response, Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported. Worth It or Wack? American Airlines has announced they will be charging an extra fee for “Express Seats”—the first two or three rows of seats in the coach cabin. For $19 to $39 you can have these seats and the opportunity to board the airplane as part of the first in “general boarding”. Customers do not get much for the extra fee, such as extra legroom. The airline says boarding the flight first is a high propriety for fliers. The rows included in the extra fee vary on the type of airplane it is. American Airlines will only be selling “express seats” at the airport check-in 24 hours to 50 minutes before the flight for domestic flights. Frequent fliers can book these seats for no extra charge.

Ingredients >> 4 6-inch whole-wheat pitas >> 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil >> 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning >> 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder >> 1/4 teaspoon salt Preparation

■ Position oven racks in middle and lower third of oven; preheat to 350°F. Coat 2 large baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray. ■ Cut pitas into 8 wedges each and separate each wedge at the fold. Place the pita wedges, rough-side up, in an even layer on the prepared baking sheets. Brush with oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning, garlic powder and salt. ■ Bake the pita wedges, switching the baking sheets halfway through, until golden and crispy, 6 to 10 minutes (depending on the thickness). We need good fats, such as, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, eggs, fish and olive oil. Another food group largely lacking in the average college student’s diet is something that has the power to greatly reduce LDL cholesterol, build HDL and be eaten on the go with hardly any preparation time: vegetables. According to WebMD researchers have found that persons who consume a generous amount of veggies, around 4-5 servings, or cups, per day, will, among other things, feel more energized, have a healthier complexion and more control over weight gain — all of this due to the body’s added nutrients and subsequent efficiency induced by vegetables. More benefits include a decreased risk of cancer and a stronger immune system.

don’t know about you, but when I hear the word “cholesterol,” I think of my parents and varicose veins. That’s because society usually connects ill health to old age, which causes young people to give it little or no thought. But I wondered: Is that an accurate assumption? After some lengthy research, I determined it is not. Scientists are bringing to light the need to not just think about, but also to change, cholesterol-building eating habits in young people. As I try to explain to a guy I barely know that I can’t return his romantic feelings because, well, I barely know him, I think about how Diane, Vivian or Corie would handle this situation.

When he expresses frustration with me because he won’t be getting anything more than a hug at the end of the night (he didn’t even get that), which he swears has never happened after he has expressed his romantic interests to a woman, I realize his previous experiences reflect the situations from the modern romantic comedy. It’s always the same series of events: a comedic and unusual meet-cute of the two delightfully mismatched romantic leads, followed by an awkward date or two, a montage that spans anywhere from days to years, a parting of ways over something silly, a heartfelt apology and a make-up kiss (cue the violin). And, poof!—roll the credits. Sure, I had a meet-cute with this guy, we were mismatched and the time we spent together was definitely awkward, but we skipped the montage, parted ways and went straight to the credits. Romantic comedies >> to shun her “mathelete” past, Sam tries his best to accept his geek status and survive his freshman year of high school. The show, created by Judd Apatow (director of Knocked Up) also features Seth Rogen and Jason Segel in their youth. Angelina, Jersey Shore Angelina never fit in with the cast of Jersey Shore. She called herself the “Kim Kardashian” of the house. Fashion Diary With Thanksgiving on the horizon, JAYE’s superstylish Fashion Director, Julianna Hamett, is thankful for designers who create jaw-dropping accessories that forge function with fantasy ■ As we approach this holiday season, it’s customary to reflect on what we’re most thankful for. As I clicked through my favorite fashion and style blogs, I began to realize what us fashion slaves are most thankful for. ■ We can’t say that we were really surprised after viewing the fall collections to see red reign as the beauty shade to wear this season. For starters, designers like fashion darling Prabal Gurung, the can-do-no-wrong Dolce & Gabanna duo and Donna Karan, the queen of downtown elegance, were determined to sophisticate the way women dress — more of the Mad Men-inspired classic shapes lauded for their elegance and versatility, less of the itty-bitty minis and too-severe strong shoulders that dominated fashion’s latest ‘80s revival. There’s nothing more more timeless than a red lip. And there are few ocassions where a bold lip is prohibited. Another bonus: Even the simplest outfits are taken to another level with a dose of scarlet fever. Blasé jeans and T-shirt combos enter an obscure cool zone with a boost from the crimson cosmetic and the little black dress you find yourself recycling each holiday season is injected with new life immediately after a hit of cherryhued goodness finds it way to your pout. Luckily, there are tons of opportunities to try the look out this winter — Thanksgiving dinners, cocktail soirées, reunions with friends back home — and we’ve made it easy to achieve with our how-to at right. ■

Make the red lip work for you Are you warm or cold? Complexions that are pale with pink undertones are cool; those with olive, yellow or darker ones are warm. If you’re cool, opt for cooler reds like a true red or pinkish red; warmer reds with a brown base are ideal for warm undertones. Prep your pout. To prevent bleeding or fading, line your lips with a neutral color similar to their actual color and smudge the line with your finger, says the editors at the beauty blog, Glamme Vine. Now, it’s time to apply. With a lip brush, use small strokes and fill in your lips with your color of choice. Blot gently and reapply. Own the look. beauty diary In the first installment of her monthly column, JAYE Beauty Director Margaret Francois shares the experiences that have shaped her and asks, “Who am I to be gorgeous, talented and fabulous?” As I prepared to write my first Beauty Diary, I was instantly met with the age-old question, “What am I going to talk about?” Days passed, multiple brainstorming sessions ensued and after crumbled pieces of paper, it finally hit me: It’s not my responsibility to talk at you, but instead, to create a dialogue. This epiphany came about a few weeks ago, as I spent a day in a room full of discerning women ( Donna Karan, Bobbi Brown, Melinda Gates, Sarah Brown, Rachel Roy, among others) during the first annual Women: Inspiration & Enterprise Symposium in New York City. What touched me the most was the purpose of the event, “participating in a forum where exceptional role models are readily available to inspire and empower the next generation, sharing wisdom and offering guidance.” This sweetly flavored

A look at what it’s like to be a virgin on today’s college campuses By Arteika Smith

Some experts think movies like Juno contribute to the sterotype that all young people are irresponsible sex fiends.

ith television shows like ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, society, mainly the Baby Boomer set, thinks all college students do is sleep in one another’s beds and have frequent pregnancy scares. Thanks in part to movies like Juno and Knocked Up, the minority of young people that are engaging in

sexual activities are now heightened by placing them in the spotlight. Contrary to mainstream media’s portrayal, in 2009, less than 50% of high school students reported ever having sexual intercourse. By being stereotyped as “party girls” and “play boys”, it looks like love has taken the back seat in relationships and sex is now in the forefront. It’s displayed on commercials, embedded in magazine ads and all over the

Internet. Media makes it appear that everyone is hopping into bed—but what happens when you aren’t having sex? Young ladies like Ashley Henderson, 23, who lives in Memphis, say she has never had sex and has resolved not to do so until marriage. She said she believes that marriage is sacred and she doesn’t want to give into the pressure of having sex just so that will consummate her relationship. >>

Henderson said that she chose not to have sex because she values her virginity and doesn’t want to give away a part of herself to just any man. Henderson, born in a small town and bred in Memphis, has been a devout Jehovah’s Witness since birth says religion has always been a strong component of her upbringing. “I made this decision not only for religious reasons, but also because my mother always instilled in me how precious sex is. The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve learned to truly value my virginity,” Henderson said. Religion plays a large part in why a lot of young women do decide to wait until marriage. Robert Watkins said he believes that as long as two adults are consenting they should be able to have sex whenever they want and don’t necessarily need to wait until marriage. “The divorce rate for marriages is 50 percent so yes, I think it is an oxymoron to say save yourself for marriage,” Watkins says. “It could take a few bad apples, a few bad relation-

We should promote safe sex but we should provide tools and resources in case you choose an alternative route and decided to have premarital sex,” he continues. With artists such as Beyoncé and Rihanna selling sex out in the open with records such as “Ego” and “Rude Boy” it’s harder than ever to shy away from sexual content in mainstream America. With sexually suggestive lyrics in both songs that tell us about their relationships with significant men in their lives both pop stars take us into their bedrooms on each

song. There are also men like Shawn Smith that don’t have any qualms with dating a woman that is abstaining from sex until marriage. Case in point: His ex-girlfriend of nearly two years was a virgin and he says that her being a virgin had nothing to do with their relationship. “Well I knew [she was a virgin] before we actually started dating. It wasn’t a big deal to me,” Smith says. Their relationship ended just months ago but he never pressured her to have sex with him. He always made sure to make sure that they worked on the non-sexual aspects of their relationship like communication. >>

During that time I also picked up a part-time job to pay off bills that had begun to pile up since graduation. Truth is, I was anything but happy. I didn’t like going to work; I didn’t write, which has never been an issue, and honestly, I couldn’t find a reason to smile. But while I was working with my friend’s music career as his manager, publicist and personal assistant, I renewed my passion for media. I began a company, Smith Media Consulting, and began to work as a media consultant with local artists. My work with the local artists led me to rediscover my need to create. What took me years to discover is that all of

the tools of my happiness were in me the entire time. I just had to channel my energy and make it positive. I had the talent and the business sense, but I just needed to be more outgoing and reach for success. In their place stand glassware and stainless steel water bottles, all sporting “BPA-free” promises, calling into question the severity of this rising trend. In the past year, the BPA chemical has been the center of worldwide research and debate, and new health risks have experts urging the public for greater awareness and caution. Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a man-made estrogenic chemical used in various plastics and the lining of metal prod-

While everyone regularly intakes estrogen through the air and water, scientists at the National Toxicology Program say too much exposure to a synthetic hormone like BPA may lead to type 2 diabetes, infertility, and a range of cancers including breast and prostate. The chemical is especially toxic to fetuses and infants because they are still developing vital parts of their bodies and BPA can tamper with their formation, leading to infant death or severe birth defects. recently detected BPA in an estimated 95% of U.S. adults. The majority of this daily exposure comes from ordinary food and drinks. While people are beginning to think twice about purchasing plastic sports water bottles, thousands of other chemical-ridden products still pose threats. Unfortunately, identifying these items is not as simple as looking for Bisphenol A under an ingredients list on the back of a can. BPA is found in polycarbonate plastic, which also includes baby bottles, microwaveable food containers, toys, and dental sealants. The chemical begins to leak out of these plastics as soon as they are exposed to higher temperatures. While plastic has received national recognition for containing the chemical hormone, many consumers are still unaware of its presence in metal products. For over 120 years, BPA has been used in the

resin lining of both water pipes and food and drink cans. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that one in 10 servings of canned food tested contained BPA levels 200 times the government’s safe limit for industrial chemicals. The study also showed that exposure during pregnancy to just one of these servings has been known to cause severe developmental damage to a fetus’ reproductive organs. A general misconception is that products must be heated to a relatively high degree for toxic chemicals to take effect. “This is not necessarily the case,” says David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and Environment at University of Albany; “The longer liquids or food sit in a BPA-made container, the more BPA will leak into its contents.” With the risk of contamination so high, it is no wonder why research has been gaining momentum

While small amounts of BPA do not stay in the human system for very long, people are exposed to it so frequently that it never leaves the body. The chemical hides itself in non-recyclable, polycarbonate plastics that fall into the number 7 category of the plastic identification markings. To avoid BPA exposure, people should be especially cautious of heating these plastics in the microwave and always hand wash them rather than stick them in a steamy dishwasher. Avoid more contamination by ditching the plastic bottles and containers altogether and switching to stainless steel products or glassware like Pyrex. There is no need to swear off all plastics forever, but limiting the use of them and avoiding no. 7 plastics will greatly reduce personal exposure. Unfortunately, Bisphenol A will not be disappearing from dinner menus anytime soon unless action is taken. The National Toxicology Program shows that exposure to BPA may be increasing, yet no federal agency has moved to limit its exposure to humans. Even though many companies like Nalgene and

For now, Wal-Mart and other retailers have begun to pull BPA-containing products from shelves, and five states have banned the

It is small steps like these that experts hope will lead to greater improvements in safety standards. here is nothing like finding your college sweetheart. It’s no longer puppy, high school love; you are now in a meaningful and more mature relationship. Your heart is full of joy and you feel like you could jump on clouds. So, on love alone, and in hopes that you will experience this feeling for a lifetime, you get married right away. Now you’re married with a baby on the way, but you still have to study for the two exams next week in English and Chemistry. That floating-on-air feeling you once had may still be there, but the stress and pressure of finishing college as well as supporting your family can overshadow it. Amber Williams knows this experience all too well. At the age of 19, Williams was married with child. She experienced the cloud-nine love, the stress, the financial strain and the pressure of studying for major tests. “There were times when it was not easy, but I had the support of my husband,” Williams said. “He would make sure the kids at home had food on the table while I was in the library studying for classes.” Williams, now a 25-year-old mother of three, graduated on time, but does not deny the many roadblocks she faced to keep her marriage on the right track. Williams said the stress at the beginning helped foster a more

mature relationship for both herself and her husband, who have been married for six years. She also underlines the importance of communication before the big question is popped answered with a “yes.” Williams said being determined and having set goals at the beginning will keep your relationship heading in a positive direction. “Just don’t marry on love alone,” Williams said. “It takes more than that to make it work.” Erica Sibley decided to take a different approach with her college sweetheart. While in college, Sibley was very devoted to engulfing herself into her collegeiate experience. It helped that she and her boyfriend at the time, who is now her fiancé, had similar college lives. They were both heavily involved in Greek organizations and other professional associations on campus. “We were very involved in each other’s lives,” Sibley said. “We kept each other entertained by talking about what we had going at different times.” Although the two dated through college, marriage was never directly addressed. Sibley, who now lives with her fiancé in Arizona, said that the two tended to beat around the bush or would mention it in passing when they talked about having a family and what kind of parents they would be. >>

“We never had any thoughts of getting married while in college,” Sibley said. “We did not start mentioning families until close to the end of our junior year.” But Sibley did not mind; actually, she preferred it this way. Sibley said one issue she notices with young wives is when they marry while still in school, they may miss out on the social aspect of the college experience. “I see cases where young women get married between the ages of 19 to 21, and they miss out on the opportunity to be with friends and go to parties,” Sibley said. “Now that everybody is done with their college party lives and ready to settle down, the married woman is just now beginning her party life at the age of 26 or 27.” ■

I have too many to count. I really loved my time in college and even though it’s only been a few months, I really miss it. What do you consider the greatest accomplishment of your college career? I think mine would be getting straight As my last semester. One of my classes was pretty easy, but I had to work hard for the other three. Now that you’re out of college, what do you miss most about it? I miss the friends I made there and the college atmosphere. I recently moved out of my parents’ house and into an apartment with some friends from college, but its different living on your own than when you live on campus surrounded by friends all the time. What was your biggest fear upon first entering college? I think my biggest fear was if I’d be able to handle the workload and make new friends. Was there anything in college that you didn’t do that you regret? My freshman year I was really shy and didn’t meet as many people as I wish I had. I definitely became more outgoing over the next few years, but I wish I could redo that year over. I also wish I hadn’t skipped so many classes. It’s not a good idea! What was the best spring break trip you ever took? I went to Florida with my best friend at the time. It was our first trip without parents and we had a lot of fun!

What was one of the craziest things you ever did during college? Probably my 21st birthday…that’s all I have to say! How did you de-stress during hectic exam time? I would take time out from studying by hanging out with my friends and walking around campus. It’s really important not to take too much time out from studying though; otherwise it’s hard to get back to the books. What was your favorite exam time food to keep you energized during late study hours? Chocolate! Probably not the best idea, but I’m addicted! Your best procrastination activities? I can turn anything into procrastination which is not a good trait. But the best (and worst) would have to be Facebook. Did you ever have any major disputes between you and your roommates? If so, how did you handle it? Yes! It’s never fun fighting with someone that sleeps five feet away from you, and there were a lot of times I didn’t handle it the right way. You have to be willing to talk about what the problem is and make compromises. Just because you’re friends with someone doesn’t mean you can live together, but there are ways to work it out. What do you consider the best place on a college campus to meet eligible bachelors? I’ve heard people say the gym or the bars, but I think it depends on what

kind of relationship you’re looking for at the time. I think the best way to meet guys is by getting involved. What has been the biggest adjustment from college life to postgrad life? What’s one advantage of post-grad life that college doesn’t offer and vice-versa? For most people when you’re in college you’re on your own, but in reality you’re not. My parents paid for the majority of the things I did in college so that would have to be the biggest advantage of college life. The advantage of post-grad life is not having to worry about papers and tests. The biggest adjustment has been watching my bank account get smaller and smaller. What are you currently doing now that you are out of school and what are your future plans? I just moved into a house with some friends and I’m sending out resumes wherever I can. Right now, I’m working at a restaurant as a hostess, but my future plans are to work in the travel industry or become an event planner. If you take a look at That’s Chic, her online chronicles composed of crystalclear photos of her easy, breezy personal style ( think lots of vintage, flowy layers and a designer splurge here and there ), stashes of inspiration photos (that send you to a fantasy land where the only thing that matters is fashion), and dossiers on the latest musings in her world, you realize that she’s what JAYE’s all about. of highschool, and I had a really strict dad. I guess it was some sort of outlet for me when I wasn’t allowed much of social one, and all the magazines and fashion forum browsing, I needed a place to document it all.

JAYE: Why do you think there is such an interest in bloggers by companies and brands to wear their products and promote their merchandise? RN: Bloggers are people you can relate to, and after following a person for so long, you gain trust of their opinion and simply fall in love. I mean, if you’re following someone for a year or more, you must be really fond of them. Companies see this personal relationship growing and jump on the opportunity of dressing that said blogger who will style it to the reader’s preference. It’s much more personal to see it styled personally on a blogger than it is in a magazine where it’s almost intangible.

JAYE: Any advice for people wanting to start their own blog? RN: People just need to be themselves. It is a little frustrating to see girls who are blogging just to gain the opportunities that the big guns have had and in doing so, they’re just straight knockoffs. People can see right through you!

JAYE: Why do you think there is so much animosity harbored towards bloggers? RN: I think it’s because the industry has been so hard to get in and bloggers kind of ease their way through the backdoor. It is a little unfair. JAYE: Do you think the blogging craze has staying power or it’s just a phase? RN: It’s all up in the air. There’s almost too many blogs to filter through – and I’ll be a little bold for saying, but there’s a lot of

JAYE: How much time do you devote to your blog each week? RN: Dude, it is a lot more work than people think! I try to shoot pictures twice in the week— 15 minutes each time. Sitting down to go through and edit the pictures is another pain… then battling writer’s block once the post actually goes up! I’m totally the type who will sit in front of the computer and toggle between browsing social media sites and Blogger thus easily taking up two hours to write a paragraph. It’s a lot of work; I guess I’m a little jaded. Nonetheless, it’s still a fun process and keeps me busy.

How does a woman make a good first impression? Paul: I’m attracted to three things: a laugh, a smile, and eyes. If I’m out and having fun with friends, I’m drawn to other people who are doing the same. What I like most is a person who isn’t afraid to smile. I have to admit really bad teeth is a turn-off! Eyes can tell you so much! You can read a person from their eyes, and I love people who show off their eyes naturally. Daniel: She has to be outgoing and have a sense of humor. She also has to have a great smile. It’s the first thing that I notice on a woman. Ben: Be open to conversation—don’t speak excessively of yourself, ask questions in return, and show genuine interest. Also, being hot helps. Throw your hair back in a ponytail for all I care. Unless we’re going on a fancy date, your hair looks fine as is! Daniel: Appearance. If I like the girl, I don’t care if she’s without make-up or dressed down. Appearances aren’t everything. Ben: In general, women get too easily attached to Plan A and are unwilling to go with the flow and adjust to Plan B if necessary. James: How her hair looks every time she goes outside. Unless it was personally attacked by a storm, I can deal with it not being straightened or “perfect.” David: Women obsess over their appearance way too much. Yes, we want you to look good, but we don’t want you to be vain. If we approach you and devote our energy to you, we clearly find you attractive. Be secure. Joevan: Themselves. Daniel: Single is someone who just likes to be alone, but still wants to flirt or have that feeling of companionship without committing. Dating, to me, is more like just like a way to say “Yeah we’re together”,

but it’s not love. A relationship is more of an “in love” type of deal. Ben: Being single is not seeing anybody regularly. Dating is seeing someone regularly— you make plans and formally get together. When you’re in a relationship together, you see someone regularly and there’s no need to set up times because it’s assumed you’ll usually be together. James: When I’m single, I can do whatever I want, because I am not in any type of commitment that requires me to answer to anyone. When dating, I can still do whatever I want. I can go on as many dates with as many women as I feel necessary. Unless I notice a special spark on one of these dates, there is no need

one to answer to. You are living your life. Dating: The getting-to-know-one-another stage. Relationship: Committing to someone after getting to know them. Marcus: Single is not being involved with any one person beyond maybe the occasional casual encounter. Dating is seeing someone frequently, but not necessarily having any real commitment. Being in a relationship means that there is an agreement by both partners to make a commitment to maintain some sort of exclusivity.

Sex is not all of a relationship, but I consider it a key part. Daniel: It doesn’t hurt, but it definitely shouldn’t be the focal point in a relationship. Ben: Are you serious? James: It’s only as important as you make it. Out of 100, sex is about 15 percent of the relationship. It shouldn’t dictate the relationship though. If I am getting it, great. If I’m not, it’s not the end of the world. I’m not in a relationship for the sex. David: Sex can definitely enhance a relationship, but it’s not enough. Joevan: It varies. Women and men should hold out on one another to see if there’s more to the relationship than sex. Marcus: Between sexually active people, it’s pretty important. It shouldn’t be the main priority. You can have a good relationship without sex.

Daniel: We are only interested in physical aspects of a relationship. Ben: Men are just as sensitive as women are. We express emotions differently — primarily through our actions. James: We are all the same and inevitably break your heart, like the last two losers you dated. This sucks because some of us won’t ever get a chance. Letting the last guy dictate what she thinks about the next guy is irrational and childish. No two guys are a like. The faster women realize that, the better off planet Earth will be. David: We don’t have emotions. I don’t even think that’s humanly possible. We may not overtly show them, but they are there. Joevan: We all are dogs and act the same. Marcus: Men have to be figured out. Men are very simple. If you are dating a man, he’ll be upfront. Don’t over analyze the situation or make excuses if he’s not the way you want.

How do you indicate to a woman that you’re serious about her and the relationship? Paul: I actually ask her to be my girlfriend. Up until that point, we’re not officially in a relationship. If we’ve been dating for a long while and it’s true, I’ll tell her I love her. I only say it if I mean it. Daniel: Tell her how serious you are and have your actions live up to her. Actions definitely speak louder than words. Ben: I don’t think there’s a definitive moment or action where things become serious. If things are going well, there’s a natural progression of spending more time together and doing more for each other. James: I give her my undivided attention and time. I go the extra mile. Actions speak louder than words, and me telling her, “Babe, I’m serious about you and this relationship,” just isn’t enough. David: When a woman meets my family, I’m telling her that I want to take this relationship to the next level. Family is important to me and I care what they think. Joevan: I’ll show her, let her know that I care and make her trust me. I’ll do things she likes out of the blue and learn about her. Marcus: I usually just tell her how I feel. In addition, I may make a huge gesture to demonstrate the way I feel. I’ll do something I wouldn’t do for anyone else under any circumstance.

Ben: Resolving disputes with angry sex is awesome. I mean that in the most sincere way possible. James: Every man has a multitude of characteristics, which makes him unique and different from the next guy. Genuinely care enough to find out what makes him who he is, and you will never have to worry about having to pry into his brain when something is troubling him. He will naturally want to share the world with you if you dare to venture into his. David: Be patient with your man. Just because he’s not doing and saying things at the rate you want him to doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. Joevan: Give a man a chance before you write him off as “just another guy”. Men like a woman who can go out on the limb and give them their all. Being patient is the key. Do not rush a guy into something he isn’t ready for. Marcus: Don’t let your tendency to over-think talk you out of something good or trap you into something bad. The easiest way to turn your guy off? Think he’s like your exes before giving him a chance to prove otherwise.

What “secret” about men would you like to tell women? Paul: If a man won’t commit to a relationship, he thinks he can do better. Unless you can get a man to commit, you are his girlfriend and you should stay away. If you’re looking for a friend with benefits, we’ll entertain you. Daniel: Some of us actually have feelings. We aren’t just mindless sex machines. We actually care about what you think. Ben: We assume you’ll become your mothers. Expect us to become our fathers. At its best, Twitter is bind that connects people across the world and allows them to exchange information faster than a speeding bullet. At its worst, the social networking force is an incubus for ignorance, most notably in the form of the useless trending topic. Follow our threestep guide to get rid of the ridiculous TTs We like Twitter, we really do. Most of the editors have accounts, and not only does the network help us stay connected, but it’s also a great way to shoot the breeze in class, at work or while we should be studying for that biochem final in a few weeks. But here’s one thing we can’t stand: cockamamie trending topics (TTs). The ones like, “#waystoaskforsex” (as if any of the recommendations would actually result in any nooky), “#nowthatsghetto” (we didn’t know people still said that!), and one of our faves, “#letsbehonest” (since we’re being so “honest,” flooding our timelines with these absurd musings may drive us crazy, but they make you look, well, crazy). According to Twitter, TTs are designed to give you a snapshot of what’s going on in the world, and as wired in as our generation likes to be,

sometimes you have to wonder, “Am I missing anything?” Team JAYE thinks you are missing something: the tweets with substance. There are tons of users who retweet pertinent news stories, recommend tweeters actually worth following and provide off-the-wall comic relief, but those are overshadowed by the “3drunkwords: Thanks for Nothing!” missives that make you wish Twitter had entrance exams like college to somehow weed out the weak. But there’s hope, and it starts with you. Here’s are three-step blueprint to thwarting the vapid TT in its tracks: Don’t succumb to the pressure. We know it’s tough—“everyone’s doing it!” you think. But as mom said, “Just because your friend jumped off a bridge, doesn’t mean you have to.” And in this case, the blind following the blind is a bridge to nowhere—
