I don’t understand why people enjoy walking long distances to places they’re not familiar with in the rain and wind. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the concept of walking and to be honest I quite enjoy walking to the local shops in the village or having a stroll to the local. But what I don’t understand is why people push themselves and walk up hills and mountains in their spare time just for the fun of it. Some people actually go on walking holidays, which I cannot understand. Each to their own I guess, but I would much rather spend my holiday on a beautiful sunny beach. +

Why Walk ?

the filling station

Admittedly the Lake District is a beautiful place and I can understand why people would like to visit. Pictured top right is Derwent Water, one of the largest lakes in the whole of the Lake District. It’s approximately 5km long and 1.6km wide and boasts a depth of 72ft. An interesting fact about the lake is that it is thought to be one of the last remaining native habitats of the Vendace fish, which was thought to be in around 4 of the other surrounding lakes. In my opinion its definitely worth a visit to take a few photos and maybe dip your toes in the lake, but instead of walking all the way around the lake, working up a sweat and getting sore feet you can cool off and grab a coffee or a burger at The Filling Station which is described as a fusion of a classic Lake District tea room with an American Diner - an interesting combination to say the least. +

beatrix potter

The Lake district is also well known for being the inspiration for many of Beatrix Potters illustrated children books. With the profits from her highly succesfully books she purchased many farms and estates in the Lake District. Nowadays there’s a Beatrix Potter attraction where you can view some of her orignal artwork and take a tour through some of the characters and their stories. +

holmescales

If you’re like me and like to have a lie-in when you’re on holiday that might not be the case in the Lake District, especially if you’re camping. The Lake District is well known for having a huge variety of wildlife, including birds. If frustration gets the better of you and you need to release some anger, then Clay Pigeon shooting is for you. Holmescales is located in Kendal and they offer a wide range of activities including Clay Pigeon shooting and Air Rifle shooting. This will no doubt be a great way of releaving stress and anger, and is highly recommended. +

romneys Kendal is also well known for the production of Kendal Mint cake which is favoured by hikers and mountaineers due to its high glucose content. The traditional Kendal Mint Cake brand is Romneys, and their factory is well worth a visit. So if all the walking round the Lake District becomes tiring and you need a burst of energy then Romneys Kendal Mint will be ideal.

puzzling place

In a nutshell Puzzling Place is basically an attraction consisting of many different puzzles and illusions. In my opinion this place is definitely worth a visit. I’ve been staring at this photo for a good 10 minutes now and still can’t work out how the illusion works! They even have an anti-gravity room which looks equally as amazing. The best is still to come though, it’s all free, so this is definitely the perfect day out if you’re on a budget. +

For the more adventurous of you there’s Go Ape, which is essentially a huge playground for adults. They pride themselves on being the tallest ‘Go Ape’ in the country, some points of the course reach up to 360 metres above sea level and you can see Scotland. Go Ape caters for all of the family and boasts a zipwire, a Tarzan swing and many different crossings which will no doubt bring out the innerTarzan within! +
