Strength Through Flowers

Cover Artist

Gretchen Templet

WHILE COVER ARTIST GRETCHEN

Templet’s professional background is in interior design, she is a life-long drawer and painter. Her true masterpieces lie in the vibrant world she creates with her paintings, inspired by the blossoms that have adorned her life since childhood.

Gretchen Templet’s journey into art began as a young girl under the guidance of her third-grade art teacher when she discovered the power of expressing herself through art. She remembers the affirming praise she received for a plantation drawing she created. That day, she heard her teacher say, “We always know which drawing is Gretchen’s.” This simple, yet momentous statement meant everything to Gretchen then and now. With each creation, she felt more confident in her work, and a sense of pride in her art began to emerge.

Her creativity progressed, and as a teenager, she entertained herself drawing interiors inspired by her mother’s Southern Living magazines. However it was during her first college oil painting course, that Gretchen discovered a lasting love for flowers

in art. She may not have known it then, but her initial masterpiece, a painting between garden and inspired by a Callaway Gardens vacation photo, became a timeless theme in her creative journey.

With her artistic dreams always a constant, Gretchen completed her degree in interior design at LSU and worked in that field for several years. Hurricane Katrina and motherhood changed her career trajectory. Gretchen was fortunate to embrace the role of stay-at-home mom to Sidney, now 14, and Reid, now 12. Regardless, Gretchen’s artistic aspirations remained undiminished. Another shift loomed on the horizon for the Templets. When Reid was 2 ½, he received a diagnosis of autism. This diagnosis would profoundly affect the lives of the entire family, with Gretchen experiencing its impact in an unexpected way.

The challenges of understanding and meeting Reid’s unique needs altered many aspects of life, at least for a while. As a mother, Gretchen embraced the challenges to guide and nurture Reid in his journey to communicate and understand the world

12 Inside New Orleans

around him. Despite the challenges, her experience with Reid would later prove to be a catalyst for the artistic dream she had never abandoned, as it came to fruition in a profound and symbolic way.

The origins of Gretchen’s artistic inspiration delve deep into her family’s gardening heritage. No stranger to gardening, the vivid memories of her great grandparents’ expansive garden and her grandmother’s sweet peas have become the building blocks of her artistic expression. For Gretchen, growing and painting flowers is not just an artistic endeavor; it’s an extension of her flower-filled state of mind. “Growing and painting flowers became a peaceful outlet for me. It was the highlight on dark days because it was the one time that I didn’t worry or think of anything else,” muses Gretchen.

The artistic process for Gretchen is a beautiful dance between her garden and her sunlit painting space. The ritual begins with selecting seeds and plants from various sources, planting them in her garden, and arranging the blooms in an array of glass vases and jars. A quick photoshoot captures the essence of her floral subject. As her husband Rance and son Reid embark on their daily drive to the lakefront, Gretchen begins her “beat the clock” painting session, working wet paint on wet paint to create unexpected and captivating details. “Some days,” says Gretchen, “the lakefront drive gets an extension...depending on how big the canvas is!”

“Beat the clock” time is equally cherished because it gives Gretchen and daughter Sydney a moment to catch up. An 8th grader at Mt. Carmel and active vocalist in two choirs, Sydney stays busy. Gretchen appreciates these daily moments when she can check-in with her daughter, whom she calls, “the strongest little chickadee I’ve met.”

Life for Reid is beginning to find its own rhythm making every day better for him and allowing Gretchen a bit more time to paint. Additionally, Reid is learning to use a promising form of communication with his spelling board, marking an important milestone in his way of expression. Ultimately, each step in his progress gives Reid and his mom something significant that each needs in their lives.

Oil painting is Gretchen’s preferred medium; she relishes the layers that build up to create a painting. The process of color mixing and the forgiving nature of oil paint captivate her. She finds freedom in the underpainting, where she looks for intentional choices in color and shape. This unintentional trick allows the first

few layers of transparent color to peek through in the final piece, adding a marvelous sparkle and depth to the canvas. In recent years, watercolors have also found a place in her heart, providing a quick and beautiful creative outlet amid a busy day with Reid.

Taking on a role of their own, Gretchen’s paintings create a peaceful impact to all who encounter them. “I love to hear that my paintings make people feel peaceful. It always makes me chuckle to myself a little bit...my house feels far from peaceful, so that comment makes me think that my brushes must be magic,” says Gretchen. Despite the bustling nature of her home, the peace and joy emanating from her artwork are magical.

Gretchen is overwhelmed with gratitude for the happiness and balance that painting flowers has brought into her life. Her love for flowers and the art of painting them has provided her with a dream job and played a significant role in navigating life’s complexities.

Gretchen Templet’s artistic journey is an example of the profound impact that desire and creativity can wield. Through her blooming canvases, she invites the viewer to pause, breathe, and find solace in the beauty of the world, as a reminder that even amid life’s challenges, art has the power to cultivate joy and peace.

New Orleans’ Social Queen!

MARGARITA BERGEN, the vibrant former owner of Bergen Gallery and Casel-Bergen Gallery as well as the former Society Editor of New Orleans Living Magazine, embodies the spirit of a social butterfly. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, her journey took an adventurous turn when she immigrated to the bustling metropolis of New York City at sixteen.

Margarita’s arrival in New York would soon see her immerse herself in education, earning a Master’s Degree in Education and a post-master’s degree in school administration. Her professional journey led her to a position working with public schools throughout New York and consulting with the U.S. Department of Education, where she contributed to the field of bilingual education.

In 1977, destiny intervened during Margarita’s visit to New Orleans for an International Bilingual Conference. She felt connected to the art world while exploring the French Quarter’s galleries, including one showcasing her brother Lorenzo Bergen’s work. A year later, prompted by her brother’s encouragement, she bid farewell to her role in the NY State’s Bilingual Bureau. In 1978, Margarita opened the Bergen Gallery at 730 Royal Street. Despite lacking a formal art background, Margarita’s innate taste and love for people fueled her 25-year journey in the art gallery business.

The Bergen Gallery specialized in graphics, offering a diverse collection of local and international artists, including renowned names like Erté, Nagel, Mcknight, and Bedard. Margarita relished the challenge of finding art that resonated with her customers, including celebrities such as Jennifer

Lopez, Nicolas Cage, Delta Burke, and Gerald McRaney. “It was an amazing gallery with an unmatched inventory of art, especially local festival posters, which I helped to make popular” Margarita recalls of those gallery days.

Margarita sold the Bergen Gallery in 2000, but she would, again, find herself at the helm of an art gallery fourteen years later. In the fall of 2014, Margarita bought Casell Gallery from artist Joachim Casell and relocated the new Casell-Bergen Gallery to 1305 Decatur St. from its former Royal Street storefront.

A connoisseur of the arts, Margarita enjoys attending ballet, symphony, theater, opera, and visual arts performances. Her eclectic tastes extend to travel, fine food, and wine, with a particular affinity for champagne. Oh, and she adores a good party!

Reflecting on her influences, Margarita acknowledges her mother’s unwavering commitment to providing her with an excellent education after her father’s death when she was just eleven. Her persistence and hard work are her greatest strengths. Facing gender discrimination, Margarita navigated the art world, proving her worth and leaving an indelible mark. Her advice to newcomers emphasizes knowledge, an open mind, and resilience in the face of long hours and challenges.

Happiness, according to Margarita, lies in active involvement and generosity. Her philanthropic spirit led her to patronize cultural arts by donating art and establishing a reputation for extreme generosity during her tenure at Bergen Gallery. Margarita Bergen’s beautiful life is a testament to passion, persistence, and the transformative power of art and culture.

Jessica Marasco Illes

I am a native New Orleanian who attended Dominican High School and NOCCA. Afterward, I found myself at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, home of Steel Magnolias.

I moved to New York City two months before Hurricane Katrina, where I stayed until well after the Saints won the Super Bowl. It was living in New York during the 2007-2008 financial crisis that piqued my interest in the stock market.

I enjoy learning about my client’s needs so that we can develop a strategy to help achieve long-term financial goals. Whether you want to plan for retirement, save for college, reduce your tax bills, or plan your estate, you can expect personalized service and long-term investment strategies instead of the latest investment fads. Because Edward Jones is a privately owned company, I truly work for my clients – not shareholders – when giving advice and creating a strategy.

When not working for my clients, I am the wife of an audio mixer for film and television, Derek, and a mother to my human toddler, Scarlett, a soon-to-be baby boy due June 2024, and my rescue fur babies, Baby Colston, and Buster. Scarlett attends Ecole Bilingue, where I am involved with the Parent Association. I am a lover of Mardi Gras, and I ride in Cleopatra and march with the Krewe of Dolly! When not riding or walking, you can find our family on the parade route or at one of the millions of Louisiana festivals. Together, we love to travel (Dollywood is currently one of our favorite places), cheer on our beloved Saints, and soak up everything that New Orleans and Old Gretna have to offer! Kristin says her job’s most rewarding aspect is “Having the opportunity to be part of a milestone celebratory event or even a memorable dinner out and getting to share in those moments with her guests. That’s what makes this job so rewarding, notes Kristin.”

Kristin never slows down, juggling her career and making time for her three busy children. Fortunately, she had excellent role models in her parents. As business owners themselves, they taught her the importance of balancing her work and family life. Another important lesson she learned from her parents that is key to her business success is treating everyone with respect, whether they are clients, coworkers, or vendors.

Melissa Bennett-Simeon

My last class at the University of Georgia was insurance, and I soon realized I had majored in the wrong thing. The insurance nerd in me emerged, and now, 15 years later, I am still following my passion for protecting my clients’ businesses and valuable assets. As the founder of Bennett Simeon Insurance, I love getting to know my clients and understanding each business’ unique challenges. I am committed to giving solutions that align with each business’ goals and budgetary constraints, which is of utmost importance in this economy. My dad always reminds me of that infamous song lyric, “When the going gets tough…the tough get going.” Insurance is tough right now, but with our team at Bennett Simeon Insurance, we provide superior customer service and insurance options from hundreds of markets. We thrive on rising to the challenge.

What Erika most enjoys about her design work is her clients and her process. “I enjoy the creative process of bringing my client’s vision into reality. Once we build a good relationship, I understand what look we are going for, and it becomes a dance with selections and approvals,” she says.

Recognizing the importance of recharging to sustain creativity, Erika turns to exercise, gardening, crafts, and strolling in art museums. She also likes to go to bookstores to flip through design books and magazines.

Erika’s devotion to creating exceptional designs and prioritizing client happiness is reflected in her work, setting her apart as an interior designer.

Unveiling Elegance with Bliss Bridal

BLISS BRIDAL OWNER KATIE YELLIN opened her first bridal shop after her own challenging gown-shopping experience. While shopping for her bridal gown, she noticed a significant contrast between the local bridal boutiques. The bride’s choices were limited to high-end luxury boutiques or lower-priced, self-help stores. Katie saw these two extremes as an opportunity. “ I decided it didn’t have to be one or the other. Brides deserved to love their

experience, be proud of where they said yes, and still get an affordable quality gown.” On Valentine’s Day, 2011, she opened her first bridal shop in Fairhope, Alabama.

Dedicated to inclusivity, Bliss ensures a diverse range of sizes and designers, including sizes 0 to 32. There is a vast selection, with gowns ranging from traditional to trendy, all under $4000. Bliss, a Justin Alexander Diamond Partner, features the exclusive Diamond Collection from distinguished designers. This partnership ensures that Bliss brides receive priority benefits, including exclusive access to new releases and timely delivery dates for their gowns.

The Bliss Bridal experience is one of exquisite beauty. The ambiance at the Magazine Street shop is sophisticated and charming. The space is bathed in natural light, with crisp white walls and polished wood floors. The exquisite bridal suites can accommodate 3-4 people. Larger parties can be accommodated in showroom suite, making all welcome. Gorgeous mirrors add to the beautiful feel. A crystal chandelier casts a glow, adding a touch of glamour. Bliss Bridal on Magazine is a truly stunning space to choose the most important dress you will ever wear.

The key to maintaining the luxurious ambiance while catering to varied budgets lies in the genuine kindness, warmth, and care that Katie and her staff exhibit. Beyond gowns, Bliss offers in-house alterations, a gift shop, personalized consultations, and tuxedo and suit rentals. From initial appointment to final fitting, Bliss prioritizes a seamless journey, lifting the burden off brides.

Bliss Bridal thrives on its commitment to exceptional service, timeless elegance, and making every bride’s experience unforgettable.

Embracing Spring Renewal Trends, Innovations, and Expert Tips for Your Home and Garden

AS WINTER BIDS FAREWELL and the gentle warmth of spring beckons, homeowners and gardening enthusiasts eagerly turn their attention to revitalizing their living spaces. Explore the flourishing landscape of spring home and garden businesses, uncovering the trends, innovations, and expert tips set to flourish in the upcoming season.

NEW ORLEANS COURTYARD MAGIC WITH EXTERIOR DESIGNS, INC.

Now that winter is over, it is time to assess the remains of your yard. If you are looking for a great makeover for your lawn space, a courtyard might be just the option. Exterior Designs, Inc. founder Beverly Katz, best known for her expertise on the Traditional New Orleans courtyard, offers insight into this iconic local backyard treasure.

The classic New Orleans courtyard is known for its charming aura. The colors and fragrances of the chosen botanicals are key elements in creating this atmosphere. The richer and darker the plants and blooms, the more exquisite the courtyard looks and smells. About some of the best choices for color and fragrance, Bev notes, “Ferns provide a verdant tapestry of deep, dark greenery. The intoxicating scents of night-blooming jasmine vines and sweet-olive trees infuse the courtyard with an ethereal presence, evoking a sense of timeless allure.” There is always room for classic favorites like camellias, camellia sasanqua, and azaleas in the New Orleans courtyard. These Southern favorites are great as either borders or hedges and “add,” says Bev, “a touch of heritage and elegance.”

Terra cotta urns add to the courtyard’s charm. These timeless vessels have a warm, earthy color, and their material gives them a rustic and traditional look that is perfect for a courtyard. A brick walkway can evoke a sense

of tradition and history, especially when integrated into the context of a New Orleans courtyard.

The traditional New Orleans courtyard can be created in any space as long as it is well-planned and especially detailed with all the fragrant beauty of the right botanicals.

Exterior Designs, Inc. enhances local landscapes, courtyards, and pool renovations while preserving New Orleans’ timeless architecture.

BRINGING TIMELESS ELEGANCE TO NEW ORLEANS HOMES

Focusing on the inside of your home is another popular refresh that homeowners choose to address in the spring. Whether it’s a fresh coat of paint, new flooring, or a complete renovation, these are all great ways to breathe new life into your home space. Many homeowners in New Orleans live in older, even historic, homes that can be tricky to navigate in a renovation. M&Z Renovations, however, is an expert in this area.

Zack and Margaux of M&Z Renovations know the transformative power of home renovation. Their commitment to preserving the unique charm of New Orleans architecture while infusing modern updates is considered in every project they undertake. By carefully selecting materials and design elements that honor the city’s rich architectural heritage, they create authentic yet refreshed spaces. Their dedication to sourcing locally-made items, such as those from esteemed artisans like Sazerac Stitches and Bevolo, further enhances the authenticity of their designs and truly celebrates what it means to be part of New Orleans’s rich architectural history. M&Z Renovations offers an unparalleled blend of artistry, expertise, and dedication that truly sets them apart.

For those seeking to elevate their living spaces to new heights of elegance and sophistication or update and refurbish their homes, M&Z Renovations stands ready to turn dreams into reality.

SPRINGTIME MEANS TIME TO ORGANIZE WITH CUSTOM CLOSETS

No matter what space you choose, a custom-made design will help you get organized and keep you organized. Today, home organization means far more than just closets, although closets can be quite spectacular in their own right. Creating spaces that aid homeowners in getting and staying organized can include pantries, mudrooms, offices, garages, and more. Hiring a custom closet designer is the easiest and most efficient way to address your organization’s solution. The process begins with a consultation to determine what you want regarding size, materials, and features.

Closets by Design is one local closet design company with four “Collections” encompassing different styles and features. With the Closet by Design’s Collections, you can choose your materials and choose from hundreds of features within that Collection. The Collection styles range from modern and sleek to traditional to sophisticated, and they even feature materials that look and feel like natural wood. Closets by Design manufactures and produces all

of their products in their Covington warehouse, and they include a lifetime warranty.

Organizing a garage can be daunting because, for many people, it is a “catch-all” that tends to house more than just an automobile. Some companies create and install garage storage solutions, as they do for closets. The process is just like getting a custom closet, with a consultation to make decisions for the space.

Rufino Closets in Mandeville specializes in garage storage solutions. Ruffino will consult for the specific garage storage needs and create the best solution for your space. For instance, ideas and designs with tall or base cabinets can maximize your garage space. Ruffino Closets can make your garage into useful spaces you might not have considered, like an extra

room, a storage area, or even a workshop. Organization and properly utilized space in a garage is key for Ruffino Closets. They take great pride in bringing homeowners efficiency, ease, and peace of mind for their custom closets and their custom-designed garage storage solutions.

DIVE INTO LUXURY WITH AN OASIS POOL

A pool is a great addition in the Louisiana heat, providing a refreshing escape in your own backyard. A luxury pool combines aesthetic and functional benefits, providing a private, enjoyable space for relaxation and socializing. It becomes a retreat within the home, offering a unique blend of comfort and entertainment.

When choosing your pool, there are many things to consider, including size and shape: choose a pool size and shape that complements your backyard. Before you break ground, a budget for the entire pool project, and the pool’s construction materials, such as fiberglass, concrete, or vinyl should be determined. Your pool features and accessories are fun to choose. This is where you can decide on features like waterfalls, fountains, lighting, and pool accessories such as diving boards or slides to enhance the pool experience.

Oasis Pools, a family-owned business, offers personalized pool designs, hot tubs, fire features, pool chillers, LED lights, aggregate plasters, and outdoor kitchens. Transform your backyard into a summer sanctuary with their comprehensive offerings.

All Day Rosé

Drinks with Anna

IT IS SPRINGTIME in New Orleans. The weather is delightful. The tulips are blooming in City Park. The days are longer, and my wine selections are getting lighter-bodied, so I wanted to share my favorite Rosés for 2024.

SAINTE MARGUERITE SYMPHONIE ROSÉ – COTES DE PROVENCE, FRANCE

2022 Vintage; 92 Pts on Wine Enthusiast

This Rosé was exceptionally light and refreshing and pairs very well with fresh fish, summer salads, or while scrolling through Instagram. My first sip brought back all the memories from my last trip through Provence.

WILLAMETTE VALLEY VINEYARDS WHOLE CLUSTER ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR

2021 Vintage

This whole cluster of Pinot Noir Rosé pairs deliciously with a charcuterie and cheese platter. Its delicate flavors and sweet aromas balance well with the savory flavors of the charcuterie platter.

SONOMA CUTRER ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR – SONOMA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

2022 Vintage

This California wine offers bright strawberry and citrus flavors. It is a delightful cool-climate Rosé, perfect as an introduction to the world of Rosés but certainly perfect for poolside, porch swing, or festival sipping.

WÖLFFER ESTATES SUMMER IN A BOTTLE ROSÉ –

LONG ISLAND, NY

2023 Vintage

This Rosé is fruity and delicious. It has a great balance of fruit, tannin, and minerality. It can pair with about anything, but what does it for me is the painted bottle. The visual portrait of the bottle screams summer. It gives Hamptons vibes. This Rosé would make an excellent hostess gift all summer long.

MUMM NAPA BRUT ROSÉ – NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA Non-Vintage

This beautiful Rosé is eye-catching, has vivid aromas, and has rich fruity flavors. It pairs nicely with spicy foods (which we love in NOLA), and I use it with gin, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, and housemade lavender syrup in my signature Briquette 75 cocktail. This Rosé is so versatile that you can drink it alone or mix it up in a cocktail.

PERRIER-JOUET BLASON ROSÉ – CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE

NV- Sparkling Rosé

Y’all, I love Champagne, and this Rosé is one of the BEST that I have tasted. The aromas of citrus (pink grapefruit and blood orange), and the ripe berries make this pair so easily with fresh Louisiana shellfish, salmon, or truffles. I have not made it to Champagne France yet, but it is certainly on my bucket list, my wine education bucket list. Whether you are a fan of Rosé or interested in trying Rosé for the first time, these selections are not intimidating, easy to pair, and most importantly, delicious!

Say Yes to Rose!

Cheers!
