President Chair Professor of Computer Science Hong Kong Baptist University

Chairman of the Govening Board Hong Kong Creative Arts Centre Limited

For more than 60 years, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has been dedicated to Whole Person Education and has continued to strive for excellence, with the goal of becoming the region’s leading liberal arts university, promoting academic excellence, innovation and social progress. We deeply believe in nurturing talent, not only by providing students with knowledge and preparing them for their careers, but also by inspiring them to explore new horizons, exercise their creativity, and develop into future leaders who care about their families and friends, the local community and our country.

2

To inspire is no easy task, and no instrument is more effective than the arts and culture for that purpose. Recognising that the arts and culture are vital to the development of the individual and to social progress, HKBU obtained the support of the Government (through the Home Affairs Bureau) and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, together with our strategic partners – Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Hong Kong Arts Centre – to revitalise a decommissioned factory building into the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC). It is Hong Kong’s first vertical artist village and arts hub, and it remains unique. Our efforts to support the development of the arts in Hong Kong have borne fruit in the form of affordable studios for local creative talent in an accessible and approachable environment, which nurtures an appreciation of the arts among the public.

Today, the University community takes pride in HKBU’s trailblazing legacy in culture and the arts. Reaching out to the community in tandem with our Academy of Visual Arts (AVA), JCCAC has been a pioneer in combining studio-based research on contemporary visual arts issues with sustainable service to the cultural and creative sectors.

On this auspicious occasion when we celebrate JCCAC’s 10th anniversary, I am proud to say this unique art hub in Hong Kong has stayed true to our vision and mission in the promotion of arts and culture in Hong Kong, nurturing creative talents for Hong Kong while providing affordable studio space for local artists and art groups.

The emergence of JCCAC like a phoenix from the ashes of an old factory building is just one example of HKBU’s efforts to preserve and reinvent heritage landmarks for cultural use – others include the former Royal Air Force Officers’ Mess, which was transformed into the Kai Tak Campus of AVA; and Lui Seng Chun, a Grade I historic building in Kowloon, which was repurposed as a centre for the promotion of Chinese medicine and healthcare.

JCCAC is a one of a kind vertical artist village and arts centre that has provided not only an encouraging space for creatives of multidisciplinary arts, but also a welcoming and relaxing venue for the arts community and the public to experience arts and culture. Despite the restraints of limited resources and much expectation from various stakeholders of diverse interests, it is exciting to see how JCCAC has grown in merely ten short years into a platform that enhances professional development of over 250 cumulated artists and art groups.

On this joyous occasion, may I take the opportunity to congratulate JCCAC on your extraordinary success on your 10th anniversary – you have come a long way from your humble beginning as a factory estate to the vibrant arts and culture hub you are today. I wish you continued success in supporting arts development in Hong Kong, and as you mature into a landmark arts centre in the regional cultural landscape I hope you continue to bring good vibes and positive energy to the neighbourhood, guiding residents, visitors and the public as you draw them closer to the arts and culture. We look forward to continuing our efforts to support the preservation and conservation of our precious, unique heritage and collective memories.

On behalf of JCCAC, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to our founder – Hong Kong Baptist University – and to our long term partners – Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Hong Kong Arts Centre. We are especially indebted to the Home Affairs Bureau, Sham Shui Po District Council and Sham Shui Po District Office for supporting a number of community projects, particularly in arts education for students in the district. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has been our staunch ally, being the sponsor of the Jockey Club Black Box Venue Subsidy Scheme, Jockey Club Black

Box Theatre Subsidy Scheme, and subsequently the necessary facilities maintenance and enhancement works through the Chief Executive’s Community Project List 2014. Last but not least, I must not forget to thank fellow members of the Governing Board and Committees who have given so much of their precious time to JCCAC, and particularly to Professor Mayching Kao, Chairperson of Management Committee, who has established the Professor Mayching Kao Arts Development Fund, designed to support our tenant artists to broaden their artistic vision and professional development opportunities. JCCAC has truly enjoyed a collaborative relationship with its tenant artists and cultural organisations, to which we owe much to JCCAC’s characteristic and liveliness. As we part ways with tenants who “graduate” from this “factory”, we celebrate new friendships forged and new collaborations weaved while seeking to maintain established networks. This cycle and mobility contribute to make this artist village ever young and sustainably growing. Looking back, JCCAC has successfully charted a course in creating a unique position as a pivotal art hub in Hong Kong. We would like to thank all tenants, collaborators, visitors and members of the public for sharing this iconic, memorable moment of our 10th anniversary with us. Looking forward, I am confident that JCCAC will endeavour to continue its work as a catalyst in driving the growth of our city’s creative industries.

JCCAC celebrates its 10th birthday this year. This former factory building may not exert the grand aura that the general public may associate with an artistic trove, but behind its pragmatic architecture that marks the industrial heritage of Hong Kong’s past sits the first and only artist village to date. And for over a decade, I am pleased to see the Centre provides studio facilities supporting over 250 artists and cultural organisations in their professional development, which in turn contributes to the Hong Kong arts development in general. From an early age, I have developed a profound interest in fine arts and Chinese painting, and have dedicated my career in arts education, particularly in developing the discipline of art history as a specialisation, engaging in extended research in art history and Chinese art, as well as developing the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Acknowledging the importance of crosscultural dialogues, I also facilitate exchanges with museums, university scholars and artists outside of Hong Kong. With arts education as my lifelong pursuit, I have been naturally drawn to initiatives such as JCCAC, which positions itself as a multidisciplinary artist village and arts centre that focuses on providing accessible studio facilities and artist development. It has been my pleasure to participate in this project since its inception, to serve as Chairman of the Management Committee and a member of the Governing Board, closely advising the Centre’s programme direction; and witness the growth of this young centre in cultivating future generations of artists and cultural

organisations through the resources made available to them. To be an artist, one must possess talent and instinct, superb skills and a wealth of experience. At the turn of its first decade, JCCAC envisions to bring the “factory forward” – to branch out and take the Centre’s artists and their works beyond the factory into the world, to reach new audiences and incite new opportunities. In line with this ambition, I am excited to launch The Professor Mayching Kao Arts Development Fund, which aims to encourage JCCAC resident artists to present their works, enrich their professional networks and enhance their artistic development outside of JCCAC, be it locally and internationally, with the hope to further support and promote Hong Kong arts locally as well as overseas. On the joyous occasion of the 10th anniversary of JCCAC, it elates me to see over 70 JCCAC artists and cultural organisations demonstrate their creativity and passion for art. Art presents the pursuit of beauty in life; it allows us to appreciate, reflect and explore life from an aesthetic perspective. Through the combination of artistic skills, techniques and expressions, art not only enriches our lives but also plays a significant part in our culture and values. I hope visitors to the “JCCAC Festival 2018: Factory Forward” will share the same elation through participating in our monthlong arts and cultural activities. Please join me in wishing JCCAC the most fabulous of birthdays and its next 10 years be crowned with as much success as the first.

PROFESSOR MAYCHING KAO

An initiative such as JCCAC is not to be taken for granted. Although there had been organically formed cultural clusters in Hong Kong throughout the years, an organised artist village of this scale had not been formerly available to meet the growing demands by the local arts and culture community. And it seems that, under today’s shift in social priorities, a project of this scale to repurpose a decommissioned public building for artist studio and cultural use may not be seen again too easily. As the first of its kind and a visionary project, there were scepticism and many challenges in the early years, when JCCAC received much media attention for all the right and wrong reasons. Teething problems mainly stemmed from a steep learning curve for operating such a new and unique project. One of our biggest challenges was to juggle the diverse (and often conflicting) expectations and needs of various users, visitors and other stakeholders within the limited resources, including physical and operational constraints of the premises. Through time and by maintaining open communication, as well as persistence and sincerity in forging collaborations, we have been able to strike an informed balance and establish better understanding with our fellow artists and partners. Even if our resources and other limitations cannot satisfy all, we try our best to manage, improve and move forward.

6

A verdict on our accomplishments will not be appropriate from me, but one thing I can be proud of, is that we have stayed true to our vision to nurture and present local talent, empowering them to engage with the community, and further build JCCAC as a leading arts hub in Hong Kong and beyond.

Standing by us through thick and thin, we have been very lucky indeed to have the staunch support not only from the Home Affairs Bureau, Sham Shui Po District Council, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and Hong Kong Baptist University, but also from our strategic partners, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Hong Kong Arts Centre, as well as the leadership and valuable guidance of all our board and committees members. But most importantly, none of what we have done would mean anything without all the artists and cultural organisations – the heart and soul of this unique arts hub – that have chosen JCCAC as their creative base or showcasing venue, and the many memorable happenings, laughter, tears and sweat we have shared in the past 10 years. JCCAC’s trailblazing first decade established itself many star projects, including the annual festival, quarterly handicraft fair, and many educational and community outreach projects. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary, I would like to yield tenants and partners’ continued support to go forward – together, may we welcome new opportunities and collaborations to further artist development and contribute to the Hong Kong cultural fabric.

Ten years have flown by in the blink of the eye. As JCCAC completes its first decade, it brings me and our small but dedicated team of management staff much joy to look back on what we have achieved. Behind the cumulated three million visitors we welcomed, 250 artists and cultural organisations we supported to set up studios, over 500 performances we staged plus numerous exhibitions and other cultural activities, we have seen a colourful representation of the creative energy of our home-grown talent.

關於 JCCAC

ABOUT JCCAC

Opened in 2008, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) is the first factory-turned artist village and arts centre in Hong Kong. As a multidisciplinary cultural venue that is open to the public, JCCAC is dedicated to meet the arts community’s need for affordable arts studio and display facilities, nurture young creative talents for Hong Kong and provide a relaxed environment for the public to experience arts and culture.

JCCAC strives to support arts development in Hong Kong. As a vertical artist village, JCCAC is the operation base for around 140 artists and cultural organisations of a wide array of art forms. Although more inclined towards visual arts, JCCAC is also well represented in applied and performing arts, and distinguishes itself in reserving almost a quarter of its studios to offer special support for nurturing emerging artists. As an arts centre, JCCAC houses the compact but well equipped Jockey Club Black Box Theatre, plus a two-storey exhibition gallery, tea house, café and craft shops that encircle the Central Courtyard, as well as numerous small but quirky exhibition spaces dotted around the premises. Spread over 200,000 square feet across nine storeys, JCCAC occupies the former Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate built in 1977, which was a hub for many small family-run factories. At the turn of the millennium, however, the factory estate was gradually vacated due to the decline of light industries in Hong Kong. Thanks to the generous support by the Hong Kong Government through the Home Affairs Bureau and through sponsorship of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the government-owned factory was subsequently converted into a multi-disciplinary artist village and arts centre, and re-opened in 2008 as JCCAC (under the namesake of the latter). The conversion project was awarded the "Medal of the Year of Hong Kong" (2008) from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects. JCCAC is operated by a self-financed registered subsidiary of Hong Kong Baptist University, with the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Hong Kong Arts Centre as strategic partners. Over the past ten years, JCCAC has established many cultural events that are popular amongst visitors, such as the annual month-long JCCAC Festival, quarterly JCCAC Handicraft Fair that features over a hundred local and regional artisans, experimental theatre productions at the Jockey Club Black Box Theatre every weekend, various themed exhibitions, as well as arts education and outreach programmes. Since 2008, JCCAC has enabled over 250 artists and cultural organisations to set up studios on its premises, staged more than 500 local independent theatre performances at the Jockey Club Black Box Theatre, and welcomed over 3 million cumulated visitors.

It all begins in a factory, where art happens. From “Rush” (2008) hour to exploring the cohesive power of community arts, from the fabulous “Five” (2013) to the vibrant "New Generation”(2014), “Touching” (2015) moments to open “Dialogue” (2016), and tracing directions (“N.E.W.S.”) (2017) to going “Factory Forward” (2018), JCCAC is always keen to show the true colours of its tenant artists.* To celebrate JCCAC’s 10th anniversary, this year’s Festival takes on the theme, “Factory Forward”, which alludes to JCCAC's roots as a cottage factory that has transformed into an arsenal where art is created and deployed, as its creators transcend to reach new audiences and partners. JCCAC Festival 2018 – “Factory Forward” group exhibition features works by around 70 resident artists/art organisations, who take inspiration from the Shek Kip Mei neighbourhood and the concept of old meets new. Many a little makes a mickle, Angel Hui assembled over tens of thousands of paper clips to “knit” a Guanfu (ancient Chinese official uniform) – Made in JCCAC – a metaphor on how JCCAC amasses artists in the same place. Meanwhile, Rainbow Leung shares the nesting and incubating processes of The Turtledove, her first (animal) friend in JCCAC that pick the branch outside of her studio to nest and incubate new lives, echoing artists’ creation. A reflection on the relationship between freedom and constraint, Phoebe Hui’s Everyday Objects Ensemble challenges the habitual mode of understanding familiar objects.

JCCAC 藝術節 FESTIVAL 2018

ABOUT FACTORY FORWARD

Apart from the group exhibition, a series of independent exhibitions curated by our tenant artists can be seen dotted around JCCAC’s premises during the Festival. Each of them reveals the artist’s unique story and reflections on daily life and urban spaces. An enriching visit for arts and craft lovers, the six-week Festival kicks off with the December edition of JCCAC Handicraft Fair, which invites over a hundred artisans and crafters from Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Korea, China mainland and Taiwan. To add artistic spice to the occasion, the Festival brings a kaleidoscope of fun-filled programmes, including art demonstrations by resident artists, workshops, live music performances, art performances, rooftop screenings, talks, etc., covering a wide array of arts media from ink painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, knitting to music, drama and film. All Festival programmes are free of charge and accessible to all. While JCCAC is an artist village that provides artists and cultural organisations the space and freedom to do their work with as much or as little interaction with the public on a day-to-day basis, we are very excited to host a special centre-wide Open Day on 15 December 2018 to invite the public to “step in” to 130+ studios throughout the building. Come meet and greet our artists, as well as find out about their practice and inspirations. Public studio guided tours are hosted on Saturdays for those who prefer a more customised visit. We hope the many programmes at the JCCAC Festival 2018 can tempt you out of the fast-paced and often routine way of life to a little piece of creative oasis. Thank you for being part of it and we look forward to presenting more enriching events in the years to come. * “Rush” (2008), “Five” (2013), "New Generation” (2014), “Touching” (2015), “Dialogue” (2016) and “N.E.W.S.” (2017) are major exhibitions that took place at JCCAC in the last ten years.

“Container” hinges on (cultural) exchange. It is the interface of hardware and software, the meeting point of process and transformation, consolidation and derivation, production and consumption. Hong Kong’s metropolitan success has been much identified with such icon as a “container” or “container port”. While “container” can be a closed-door hardware, it is filled and enriched with “open” resources, for example, DIY, fluid software, materials and non-infrastructural ideas, new knowledge and indefinite possibilities. The core value (energy cube) of “container” embraces a hybrid identity of “Mobility×Exchange×Transformation”.

Everyday Objects Ensemble is an installation exploring the ideas of indeterminacy and post-humanist performativity, a hybrid of concert, performance and art installation. The artwork revolves around a system of kinetic “elements” built with electronics, conductive ink and everyday life objects. Performative acts by the acoustic sculptures/machines, and members of the audience – the ever-present element of chance these acts engender – produce unexpected sonic outcomes. The deconstruction and reconstitution of various configurations also challenge the habitual mode of understanding familiar objects, a reflection on the relationship between freedom and constraint.

Born in 1936, Chui read Chinese Arts and Literature in China College in 1962 and pursued his studies in watercolour, printmaking, photography. Chui won the Urban Council’s Biennial Art Awards in Painting (1979) and Calligraphy (1988). He was granted Fellowship by U.S. National Endowment of Art for residency in “Artists’ Colonies” in 1988. His works have been shown worldwide and had been extensively collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Singapore National Art Gallery, National Museum of History in Taiwan, etc.

Leung graduated from RMIT University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts) degree majoring in ceramics. He has been a professional photographer since 2001, while at the same time developing artistically to become a professional ceramicist. Inspired by the traditional metaphor of fish in the Chinese society symbolising abundant harvest and blessings, Leung tries to build into his works the emotions and thoughts triggered by the society we live in. Spinning-off from the symbolic meaning of fish, Leung seeks traces of social traditions and record happenings in the society.

JCCAC 製造 MADE IN JCCAC 約 50,000 個萬字夾、綜合材料 50,000 paper clips and mixed media 240W×140H×10D cm 2018

Paper clip is a small, cheap and insignificant piece of office stationery. But interestingly, it is also a very practical and indispensable item that everybody uses in the office, regardless of rank. The characteristic of the paper clip is its “connectivity” – they can be linked up and consolidated into one force. Just like JCCAC, which brings together unrelated artists and art groups in Hong Kong so that they become a “factory” community of creativity for works that are truly “Made in JCCAC”.

Dreams is a series of five drawings in pursuit of a container that represents the present, a container to carry the fantasy-like life. “The phenomena of life may be likened unto a dream, a phantasm, a bubble, a shadow, the glistening dew, or lightning flash, and thus they ought to be contemplated.” – The Diamond Sūtra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra)

Fok graduated with first class honours in 2014 from the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Fine Arts. Obsessed with Tibetan Buddhism history and art, she went to study Thangka painting in Shangri-La and Nepal after graduation. In years of learning Chinese fine line painting and traditional Thangka, her works are the combination of colour adoption, structure and conception with her studies, which create a new point of view to reflect contemporary social issues.

The artist began her trip in 2016. Starting in the Netherlands, she traveled southwards and visited several small towns in France. She followed the footsteps of Van Gogh and created a 14-meter-long scroll. A unique presentation format of traditional Chinese landscape paintings, it allows the public to immerse in the painting and travel in the scroll by incorporating sketching techniques and elements of film montage. The definition of “hours of darkness” in the Code of Practice for the Lighting, Signing and Guarding of Road Works published by the Highways Department implies a 15-minutes time slot officially unrecognised. When night time is about curiosity and unknown, what human behavior would be triggered by the existence of an unregulated window of opportunity? The painting depicts the artist’s behavior during the 15 minutes ignored by the law.

However, this has some issues since ‘Wenwu’ has little resemblance to the English usage of ‘relic’. In most cases, artifact, archaeological site, monument, or just plain archaeology would be a better translation.” (From Wikipedia) Therefore, what you see here, is a cultural relic.

In those darkest times, art has brought her out from schizophrenic hell back to the “human realm”. Over the years, she has been able to feel more grounded, pursued art and expressed her own creative notions. Unfortunately, the overwhelming workload caused her to feel lost and subsequently broke down. She spent the next few months in the hell of paranoid fear. Fortunately, art has once again brought her out from hell. This painting records some of Liu’s creations in the past 10 years, through which she takes a retrospective and commemorative gaze at the past, as she looks forward to the many more decades ahead.

The artwork explores “equilibrium” and “relationship” through the interplays between the characteristics of ceramics and other materials. Cheung believes that the states of equilibrium in relationships can be interpreted from various perspectives, including the physical, philosophical and spiritual. Equilibrium is also in close connection with changes in relationships, and the formation of new relationships would lead to prominent impacts. Cheung hopes that viewers can sense the tension, harmony, contrast, homogeneousness and heterogeneousness in her works, from which endless joy and reflection spring.

「Thinking out of the box」

In BLUEPRINT – WAITING series, Cheung invited more than 30 participants in an attempt to search for their own secret gardens in their everyday spaces, around the theme of “waiting”. Each participant left a painting outdoors and waited for 4 days, some even 40 days, to collect fallen leaves, insects’ footprints and animals’ scratches, witnessing the passage of time and documenting the processes of material decay – the transitions from existence to non-existence. During the creation process, participants left behind part of their egos and allowed nature to flow on the canvases in this “collaboration” with the nature.

“Thinking out of the box” is a frequently used metaphor that reminds people to think differently. Living in the world today, people face various problems and obstacles that are stressful and exhausting. Many people would choose to endure difficulties and live through hard times, only a few would try to break through boundaries, leave their comfort zone, release the pressure, and see things beyond the walls. Lo employs the flexibility of clay to respond to the theme of JCCAC Festival, “Factory Forward”, as well as to express the joy of breaking through one’s comfort zone.

The origin of shadow play has a beautiful and touching legend: after the death of his consort Li, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty was in dire grief. A wizard named Shao Weng thus cut a piece of animal skin and cast a shadow in the silhouette of Li on a cloth. The Emperor sought solace in this as it looked to him as if Li was resurrected. Shao Weng was generously rewarded. Rumour has it that Shao Weng was the founder of shadow play. The legendary “Changsha Shadow Play” began in Han and flourished in Song. It is popular in Changsha, Xiangtan, Liuyang, Wangcheng, Ningxiang and other places. Before Guangxu of Qing Dynasty, the puppet masters would match the face of the characters according to the image and role of the characters in the story. Shadow puppets are made of cowhide, and are usually seven inches tall. Later, courtesans use seven layers of soil paper as linings and carve various patterns with colours.

This exhibition uses Chinese ink painting as the medium of creation, and Bible statement as its curatorial blueprint. Through quoting the seven deadly sins in the Bible to bring out the dark side of human beings in the society, and present the psychological state and morbid behavior that people avoid from reality.

Painting reflects time and life, sketching is an important means for an artist to capture images in real life. Artists must constantly sketch and recognise it as the basis of all paintings. Hau will share in this exhibition selected works in the Guangzhou Sketch Exhibition and Beijing Sketch Exhibition in 2018.

While JCCAC is an artist village that provides artists and cultural organisations the space and freedom to do their work with as much or as little interaction with the public on a day-to-day basis, we are very excited to host a special centre wide Open Day on 15 December 2018 to invite the public to “step in” to 130+ studios throughout the building. Come meet and greet our artists, as well as find out about their practice and inspirations. Public studio guided tours are hosted on Saturdays for those who prefer a more customised visit.

At three years old, a chatty, energetic little boy named Owen Suskind ceased to speak, disappearing into autism with

apparently no way out. Almost four years passed and the only stimuli that engaged Owen were Disney films. Then one day, his father donned a puppet – lago, the wisecracking parrot from Aladdin – and asked, “What’s it like to be you?” And poof! Owen replied, with dialogue from the movie. Life, Animated tells the remarkable story of how Owen found in Disney animation a pathway to language and a framework for making sense of the world. Human society is a complex world, and people are particularly complicated. We hide our feelings and thoughts intentionally and unintentionally.

 Cyanotype is a traditional photographic process with more than a hundred years of history. When paper is soaked in special light-sensitive chemicals and then exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet light with objects or negatives on top, chemical reaction takes place, forming a cyan-colored image.
