Mr. Rudo Catlin gave a great presentation on Entrepreneurship, illustrating the various ways of establishing an income. The session closed with a few announcements from the Mathfanatix committee and closing remarks from IPP Khaleid. Green Roots Art Competition

One of the art competition entries

The Green Roots Project held its first art competition for Secondary and Primary school students. The theme for Secondary Schools was “The three new R’s: Regeneration, Resurgence & Rejuvenation” while the theme for Primary Schools was “The three R’s: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle”. The competition allowed students to express creativity and build awareness of the need for a “greener” Barbados. We are grateful to The Alexandra School, Roland Edwards Primary School and Deighton Griffith Secondary School for allowing their students to participate in the competition.

Jaycees Queen Show Megghan Michael was Miss Barbados for the 2016 Miss Jaycess Queen Show in Antigua. It was magnificient to have such a wonderful individual represent our country. To show our support, we made a donation to her. The pageant chose to have the participants represent cancer for their campaigns and Megghan chose to represent Pediatric Cancer, which is symbolised by the Gold Ribbon. We congratulate Megghan on a fantastic job and salute her for raising awareness for a worthy cause. Miss Barbados at the Miss Jaycess Queen Show

VP Julica and VP Dionne conducting the training session

Decoding the Leader's Message Our very own Vice President Julica Cave and Vice President Dionne Dear presented this session entitled Decoding the Leader’ Message. This session is designed to be a high-energy and group-based personality development workshop designed to unlock the leadership preferences of leaders in attendance. It commenced by associating four words to four different colours for the first round. Then members picked a word which described their personality, this meant that the associated colour for that word was the participant’s colour for that round. This process was repeated for multiple rounds then participants tallied the count for the four colours. The colour with Page 6

the highest tally was the group that they were placed in. Each colour group represented a particular characteristic, these were: Yellow for Melancholic, Red for Sanguine, Green for Choleric and Blue for Phlegmatic. At this point, group members discussed their leadership styles, strengths and areas for improvement. By the end of this session, participants were able to identify and discuss their leadership preferences. They were also able to discuss ways to achieve harmony amongst the members of their respective teams. In summary, the knowledge gathered from this training allows one to connect better with family, business partners and peers in JCI and everyday life.

June General Assembly June’s general meeting was held at the Warrens Office Complex on June 30th with two new plan of actions being presented. The night ended with a short trivia contest judged by President

Charlene. The winners, Treasurer Malika Chow and JC Ronet Johnson, each received a bottle of wine for their knowledge of JCI.

JCI French WI Convention From June 30th to July 2nd, JCI Barbados PRO Michael Mayers visited Martinique to attend the 40th JCI French West Indies Convention. On his arrival in Fort-de-France, he was welcomed by JC Kathy-Liana Bravo from JCI Martinique. She showcased the beauty of the country before the convention officially started. Home hospitality was the official start for the convention. This was a nice and relaxing atmosphere to meet the members from the various local organisations of the French West Indies. The night was spectacular with drums, singing, dancing and traditional drinks. On the following day, it was time to attend training sessions. The first training session attended was Ordonnancer Pour Gagner (Plan to win) and it was conducted by JCI French WI Federal Vice President of Training Mathias Gwadanican (JCI Basse-Terre) and JCI Martinique Vice President of Training Eddy Guicheron. Mathfanatix Ceremony & Fun Day Mathfanatix 2015- 2016, in its second year, was very successful with approximately 30 students involved in the project. The project was first developed in 2014 by PVP Gabrielle Gibson as the chairperson in efforts to increase the mathematics scores of students sitting the Barbados Common Entrance Examination and was succeeded by Treasurer Malika Chow in 2015. The project went on to receive great regional and international recognition, by being presented at the 55th JCI West Indies National Convention and World Congress held at Kanazawa, Japan. This year, the project was hosted at Ellerslie Secondary School and Christ Church Parish Church and involved various elements such as a motivational training session for the children, a Christmas party and numerous examination sessions. The project then closed off with a bang on July 9th at the Plae Lounge, Ball Park, Christ Church. In order to congratulate the children on their achievements, we had a closing ceremony and fun day. To start the event, Emcee IPP Khaleid Holder introduced PRO Michael Mayers to give an invocation followed by JC Kizwauna Miller who delivered a speech on behalf of Counselling Solutions, who provided training for our tutors before the start of the program. President Charlene and Treasurer Malika quickly followed with their opening remarks, congratulating the students on great successes and thanking all the supporters of the project. Several awards were presented to the students

for their completion of the programme and the examination. Two of our students were indeed successful in the examination, achieving scores of 86 percent. The tutors and the project committee members also received recognition for their hard work and dedication to the programme. Our sponsors also received a huge thanks with specialized gift baskets for their continued support and contributions to the project. Our celebrations continued with refreshments and the fun day activities. These activities included a jumping tent and miniature golf which was enjoyed by both the children and adults. We wish the children all the best on their journey at their new schools. Keep striving for excellence!

Effective Public Speaking Past President Erica Marshall-Forde presented the Effective Public Speaking training on 14th June, 2016. This session was geared to help members in areas such as public speaking, how to employ effective techniques to deliver a great speech and speak with ease. The training involved splitting members into four groups, with each group having to recite a speech then plan and present an impromptu monologue. The training focused on topics like speech writing which included analyzing your audience: understanding age, gender, race and how simple phrases are your friend. Delivery Preparation was another key topic which highlighted knowing your audience,

how to practice your speech, how to critique your speech and how to familiarize yourself with the surroundings before delivery. Our members were extremely grateful for this session as it has allowed them to improve their skills for future endeavours. We would like to thank PP Erica for the wonderful session!

CFFB Walk/Run It was an early Saturday morning on July 2nd when the Colouratic committee participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Barbados (CFFB) Aware to Care Walk/Run. The walk began at Browne’s Beach and circled around town then headed back to the start location. The committee thoroughly enjoyed the walk and participated in Zumba and the warm down activities. The committee would like to thank the team at the Foundation for their hospitality and commend them on a great walk for a cause. Colouratic committee at the CFFB Walk

JCI Academy 2016 Our National Executive Vice President Abena Agard had an enjoyable adventure in Mito, Japan as she represented JCI West Indies at the 2016 JCI Leadership Academy. The purpose of the academy is to bring young people together from around the world, provide the opportunity of training, to contribute to the overall development of tomorrow’s global leaders and to contribute to the realization of a permanent world peace establishment.

Wise Money Management

Mr. Peter Arender receiving a token of appreciation

Wise Money Management was held July 16th, 2016. It was a special training session because it was held in conjunction with the Rotaract Club of Barbados sponsored by The Rotary Club of Barbados. Mr. Peter Arender, from Fortress Fund Barbados and a member of The Rotary Club of Barbados, was our presenter. Before he started his presentation, JCI Barbados President Charlene Corbin and The Rotaract Club of Barbados President Kemar Tremaine Gilkes gave brief presentations on their respective organisations. Afterwards, JCI Barbados VP Julica Cave started an icebreaker to allow everyone to know each other better. Her icebreaker required persons to pair up Page 16

with someone who they did not know. Then they both interviewed each other to learn as much as possible for five minutes. Once the time was up, partners had to present on each other to the audience. The exercise was truly fun and allowed new bonds to be created. Mr. Arender was up next, he spoke on various topics related to finance and money. These topics were Earning, Budgeting & Spending and Investing Sensibly. Special thanks to The Rotary Club of Barbados and The Rotaract Club of Barbados for supporting the session.
