It is my pleasure to introduce our first edition of our quarterly newsletter which captures all of our activities over the quarter and highlights upcoming activities for the next period. JCI Barbados is primed with an opportunity to inspire and enable young people to become active citizens and 2017 is shaping up to be a year of exponential growth for our Chapter. With a sound commitment to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development model, the 2017 Board of Directors are passionately employing our intellectual capitals to execute innovative projects, policies and strategies to create sustainable impact in Barbados. Hello, 2017 Board of Directors! Dionne Dear Executive Vice President I play a critical role in the development of our members by facilitating training sessions; and championing the JCI Barbados’ Debating Public Speaking Series.
Ronet Johnson Secretary General I am responsible for the issuance of correspondence on behalf of the Board to members and maintaining the database.
Kizwauna Millar Vice President Internal Affairs I take on the mantle of increasing our membership base and retaining valued members.
Deryka Sobers Treasurer I play an integral role in maintaining the financial viability and integrity of the Chapter’s finances.
Janet Taylor Vice President of External Affairs and Business Development I play a pivotal role in forming strategic alliances with our partners and innovating the way we communicate with our stakeholders locally and abroad.
Charlene Corbin Immediate Past President and Legal Counsel I provide guidance to the incumbent President and ensure meetings are in accordance with the Constitution.

Training Sessions JCI Barbados has conducted quite a number of trainings over this past quarter. Let’s recap of the highlights from our exciting and informative training sessions.
EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TRAINING This training session was conducted by Immediate Past President (IPP) & Legal Counsel Charlene Corbin. In this session, IPP Charlene opened the audience’s eyes to the type of leader they currently are and shared ways of how to become the type of leader they wish to be.
NEGOTIATION AND SCIENCE OF PERSUASION This captivating training session was conducted by Past President Erica Marshall‐ Forde and focused on the intricate art of negotiating and the science behind effective persuasive techniques. Some participants still left the room debating if the dress was blue or white! We call BLUE... don’t tell the others…

Presented by NVP Khaleid Holder. The Training examined the JCI Active Citizen Framework (ACF) to empower others in the community to create positive change.

Quarterly Project Updates
LEVEL UP JCI Barbados has definitely #updeting for 2017. Our first Level Up Entrepreneurship Workshop series which was held on March 18th, 2017 started off with a bang! We thank the presenters, Mr. LeVere Went, Ms. Jameela Hollingsworth (the HR Boss) and Mrs. Denise Gooding for an excellent delivery. Mathfanatix Oh snap, we’re almost there! Class 4 students are currently sharpening their mathematical skills in preparation for the Common Entrance Examination on May 2, 2017. We wish the 2016‐17 class all the best on their exam and success in their future endeavors. Round of applause for all those involved. See you at our closing ceremony!
The Green Machine keeps moving and we are proud to announce that Roland Edwards Primary School won first place in the Ministry of Agriculture competition for the best shade house. Kudos to Past VP External Kevin Payne! JCIB assisted with the design and configuration of the shade house while NCC provided the frame, and Heavenly Organics sponsored and provided plant pots. Trees were also planted around the school’s garden by JCIB.

International Week of Service March 25th‐31st
Visit to Eden Lodge Nursery
As part of the outreach activities for International Week of Service, JCI Barbados, along with UWI FYE visited the Eden Lodge Nursery School on March 30, 2017, to plant a sour sop tree. JCI Barbados also made a donation of fans which were sponsored by JLT Insurance Management as well as two garbage bins sponsored by Men In Action Intercessors. Service to humanity is indeed the BEST WORK OF life!

International Women’s Day
Recognized on March 8th, this day is meant to acknowledge the achievements & perseverance of women around the world. JCIB took this opportunity to highlight 8 outstanding women in our community and called on Barbados to #BeBoldForChange
International Day of Happiness
Recognized on March 20th, this day is meant to encourage people to look on the bright side of life. #SpeadtheHappy
World Cancer Day
This day is recognized on Feb 4th, which unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer. Let’s do OUR part! #WeCan #ICan
World Water Day
Recognized on March 22nd, the theme this year focused on #WasteWater to raise awareness about reducing and reusing wastewater.

JCI BARBADOS’ FIRST OFFICIAL 2017 SOCIAL JCI Barbados held its first official social on February 24, 2017 at Jack's Bar and Lounge, Worthing, Christ Church, Barbados. JCI Members and Prospective members had the opportunity to relax and unwind. Wings and fishcakes were the order of the night and some JCI members took part in playing a game a pool. All work and no play makes JCI Barbados members “dull” citizens! #PassionConnectAct
INTERNATIONAL VP JCI JOURNEY: Our International Vice President for the Americas, Kevin Hinds was elected at the 2016 JCI World Congress in Quebec City, Canada last year. IVP Kevin has responsibility for the following countries; Canada, Haiti, Honduras and USA. He visited Los Angeles with JCI USA in January to meet with local membership, community partners and government leaders, following which he worked with JCI Canada in preparing their local and national officers for a successful 2017.

Did you know? JCI Barbados inducted four new members at its General Assembly in February.
More recently in March, IVP Kevin also visited JCI Haiti, meeting with government officials and community leaders to further collaborate on key initiatives in this nation. IVP Kevin was also the lead facilitator in the Leadership Academy for JCI Haiti. Together we can all #BuildaBetterFuture.
