it anyway. Comfort is the enemy of growth. Growth lets us achieve BIG things.
... life to the fullest” didn’t know the half of it. I mean, how do we even know if a life is in its fullest? Some would say it’s about living in a bed of roses, financially free. Others would say it’s about being contented in life, or as what my Lolo said, bahalag saging basta labing (Banana is enough, what matters is that we love). If living life to the fullest means being rich, how about those rich people who, with all their fame and riches, still chose to end their lives? Or if living the fullest of life can really be achieved, then we don’t have to worry things anymore. Sounds good, but we will also be stuck on our comfort zone, on the same routine, without any new challenges. In essence, life will be so boring. There are many interpretations of living life to the fullest. But I’d like to introduce you one of them – living life without comfort. To live a full life is to be hungry for learning, to embrace challenges, to not settle for less,
and to keep doing the unimaginable. It can be scary, but as we do it, that fear will be just a dust in the wind. So if you feel under-qualified to do something, do it anyway. If you’re unsure of a new journey, take 6
In this first issue of the Nucleus, we continue to step out of our comfort zone as we celebrate hunger for learning in one of our top stories, the DASIG Scholarship and how it supports indigent students to achieve big things. You will also get to meet the two Cebu Jaycess who continue to live without comfort as it craves for bigger things in the Quadro Awards. As you flip each page, you will get involved into the journey beyond land and sea as our brothers extend hope to the victims of Typhoon Odette in the Oplan Kaagapay project. Flip further and your hands will be smeared with colors in the article Street of the Future, which tackles about the chapter’s street art project that will change the local tourism landscape forever. Truth to tell, life never runs out of things to discover. Imagine what we could achieve if we branch out and live life the way it’s meant to be lived. You might be surprised on the things you never thought you can do. The possibilities are endless, and we can only discover them if we live, not to the fullest, but instead live fully. So get up, face it all, and let the adventure begin, because this year, big things are coming. 7

mistakes but learn and be steadfast to beat your personal best, it’s a privilege afforded to you by this organization. You know the best JCI project you’ll work on? Your best project is YOU. I realized that we have spent our youth as a Jaycee because we wanted to create variety, color, chaos and order in our lives. We expand our life’s purpose because we get to see, feel and do what is to be an active citizen and even as simple as manning the registration or carrying relief goods, it’s the effort that counts.
I have been with JCI Cebu for 8 meaningful years now. I simply started with my passion for training and debate. The adventures, networking and opportunities have been truly amazing, and these are all for the taking if we just show up, and I know you’ll show up. “I’m going on an adventure! ” – Bilbo Baggins To my fellow brothers in JCI Cebu: as you write your own stories, remind yourselves it’s okay to commit
JCI is like an MBA, maybe even better because we are given so many challenges to solve for the community, use the JCI action framework and do it together with cool andfaithful brothers down the stretch. Remind yourself to spend time with your family. “A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man” – Don Corleone, The Godfather. As I come to a full circle being a recruit, a baby jaycee, a full time member, officer and now a president, I will always have a big gratitude to many mentors, frenemies and true brothers who been there both in calm and rough waters though the years. Salamat Bros! I can imagine, in our old age so wise and sturdy, we will get to look back and talk about our big, fun and frail moments spent in JCI and have a cold beer or whisky on the side, and laugh a teary eye, cheers! So be who you are despite challenges, have grit and don’t forget to be kind. Live the JCI values close to your heart, who knows BIG “things are coming for you. Game!

Volunteers in the Fragmented World of COVID-19 Words by: Jem Cloyd M. Tanucan | Photos by: Jefferson Ombe
Now more than ever, we are facing extreme cleavages and schisms in society, with current economic and social turmoil, health crisis, political discontent, and increasing conflict going on in a global scale. Ordinary people are barely surviving in this uncertain time filled with fragmented actions, values, and views. Amidst the surge of challenges and uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, a wave of solidarity among volunteers has spread across the world. The heartening volunteerism of people coming from various fields has responded to innumerable needs from the humblest effort to the grueling and even perilous undertakings. The unprecedented and overwhelming surge of COVID-19 cases cause the healthcare institutions to struggle with the scarcity of health care resources and manpower. Health care professionals are left with no choice but to live in constant crisis. In many hospitals, there is an overflow of sick and dying patients, while personal protective equipment (PPE) and other important and urgent health care resources like medicine and ventilators are short in supply. Patients are lining outside the hospitals and on the streets, waiting for their turn to be taken care of. Others even utilized their own vehicles as temporary resting areas while lining up. Unfortunately, there are those who never made it to the intensive care unit bed they needed. With this crisis, the volunteers step up to walk in droves to provide help. When personal protective equipment (PPE) and other health care resources are depleting, volunteers are sewing and donating masks and gowns for medical personnel in hospitals. Qualified medical volunteers

trailed from packed cities and lowlands to the remotest mountain to offer medical services and deliver needed supplies. Companionship and communication as essential care during uncertain times are provided by volunteers who listened and stayed with patients. When efficient and evidence-based responses are needed, expert volunteers enlist to become data collectors, analysts, and monitors ensuring comprehensive assessment of health systems across the country. With local markets and establishments affected, access to fresh food supplies is problematic. Volunteers forge the connection between struggling farmers and citizens seeking for nutritious food supplies. Giving away food packs and organizing tributes are expressions of gratitude of ordinary people staying at home to healthcare personnel and other workers who are at the forefront of this battle. The spirit of volunteerism ignites when people start to show up and share the burden of others. While the desire for a decisive, unequivocal leadership at the top of a unified system has not been properly fostered, even down to the smallest unit of government, volunteers fill the gaps by stepping up in their communities, tirelessly and selflessly extending their services for the public good. Volunteers, amidst their personal fragility and uncertainty, continue to become the beacon of hope during these dark times proving that solidarity and service are the fundamentals to connect together the fragmented world of COVID-19. To the volunteers, mabuhay!

Legacy is not found in championship rings or records broken, but in the lives you’ve touched and the number of young people you have inspired to be great at whatever they want to do. To my brothers, congratulations in advance on the legacy I know you will leave this year. Big things are not coming, but rather they are already here – as in the short time you’ve been given to lead you have already touched the lives of many beneficiaries, members and sister chapters. Your one year term will fly by so fast, so please enjoy every second of it. Stay focused on your vision, keep the fire burning, take care of each other, and most importantly have fun. Your JCI Manileña sisters will always be here for you throughout your journey. Thank you for holding space for me, for your heartfelt support and warm hospitality towards our chapter. We have had so many wonderful memories in Cebu and are looking forward to even more in the months to come. It is my great honor and privilege that I extend my warmest felicitations and congratulations to JCI Cebu on its 74th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies. This special occasion marks the turnover of the responsibility of leadership between President Clent Vincent J. Medina from Batch Dasig to very capable President Jacques Ian David S. Estola of Batch Synergy. The Induction and Turnover Ceremonies also symbolizes a renewal of JCI Cebu commitment to the Values, Mission, and Vision of JCI as we continue that road in celebrating the 75th year of JCI Philippines by 2023 in creating positive change.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought different challenges to each one of us, and our organization not exempted. However, looking at the brighter side, JCI Philippines, having almost 7,000 members, will continue with our Mission “To be the leading global network of young active citizens.” I am determined that we can still create positive change because in 2022 JCI Philippines will be Stronger Together. I have great confidence that JCI Cebu will continue to dedicate its efforts to leverage opportunities to expand JCI brand and impact as we seek to sustain and rebuild our local economies; engage and empower the workforce; and, acknowledge, understand, and create solutions to the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Let me congratulate you for taking on the challenge to lead your Local Organization in 2022. The path you chose to take would test your will, determination and perseverance but let me tell you from experience that becoming an officer of the chapter is one of the most fulfilling immersions you would face in JCI. You will come out of it like a diamond, delivering a shining light of positive change to the people you will interact with in your One Year to Lead. To the 2021 officers led by President Clent Vincent J. Medina, congratulations for finishing strong! It is my fervent hope that you remain active and be always ready to support your chapter in the years to come. To the 2022 officers led by President Jacques Ian David S. Thank you and Godspeed to JCI Cebu! Cheers to a very successful 2022! Mabuhay ang JCI Philippines!
Warmest and proudest congratulations to the incoming set of officers of the Junior Chamber International Cebu on your 74th Induction & Turnover Ceremony. 74 years of learning, sharing, and serving is something to be truly proud of. More so now that we are experiencing a pandemic that is still affecting everyone in a global scale. Despite the expected challenges and difficulties a Local Organization would face, you, the 2022 set of officers led by President Jacques Ian David S. Estola still chose to lead and serve. Your resolution is a testament of true leadership and determination.
alfredo “jun” mondiguing, jr. 2022 national executive vice president
As with Outgoing President Clent Vincent J. Medina during his term. May your desire to learn and grow in JCI never waver, that your eagerness to share all that you’ve learned and experienced remain second nature, and that your passion to serve your local community would continue to burn ever brighter. In tune with our National Organization Theme: Stronger Together, may the spirit of brotherhood, cooperation and camaraderie emanate from your officers and members who have bravely taken on the challenge of leadership and service to your local community. Continue to be an inspiration and role model of leadership and service.

My congratulations to JCI Cebu Inc. on your 74th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies! Your local organization is one of the many outstanding chapters of JCI Philippines that I personally admire, being impactful change makers and home to great leaders in the community! Even with the uncertainties brought about by the pandemic and a super typhoon, the past year has truly been an outstanding year for you all under the successful leadership of Pres. Clent Medina and my congratulations to Pres. Jacques Estola for taking the lead this year! May you all continue to be the outstanding and inspiring gentlemen of Cebu, the Visayas and the entire Philippines!
JCI Cebu Inc. has provided opportunities for many years in the community and in professional development as one of the most esteemed JCI Chapters in the country. As a member of this prestigious organization, I have seen the successes that this group has made in the field of community outreach. I admit that their assistance has truly helped me especially in my work as a public servant. I am very thankful that the group has initiated the creation of a local chapter here in my beloved city. I am excited to know that the JCI brand of service and leadership will be brought to my great city. It is my honor to congratulate JCI Cebu Inc. on its 74th Induction and all of the new board of directors and to President Jacques Ian David Estola. I wish you the best of luck in your presidency. Mabuhay JCI Cebu Inc!
It is my great honor and privilege to extend my warmest wishes in conjunction with Junior Chamber International Cebu 74th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies. JCI Cebu is the second oldest chapter in Asia and a premier all male JCI Local Organization in South Philippines producing leaders for the past 74 years. Big things are coming for JCI Cebu and I am one with you in achieving your vision and being the grandfather in Central Visayas of whom we take and follow the lead. Congratulations on your 74 years of purposeful brotherhood. Some years may have been rough, but JCI Cebu have always been a band of men going beyond what is expected of them and have proven this over and over again. To 2022 LO President Jacques Ian David Estola, I salute you for taking the challenge in leading your local organization this year. Because we are still unwillingly harvesting what was unwillingly sowed to us by the pandemic. But the leader is only as good as its followers. So I would also like to extend my salute to the 2022 Board of Directors and your members, who despite all these, still chose to stay and continue to be a part of this active movement. We are only stronger together. Enduring something no one thought possible can be transformative. Perhaps in feeling less like you were, you are more like who you are really meant to be. Because YOU ARE MEANT TO BE HERE and one day you will tell yourself, I MADE IT COUNT! I am confident that JCI Cebu, will continue to go beyond empowering its members and adopted communities for the years to come. Big CONGRATULATIONS and yes to BIG THINGS ARE COMING! 16

December 16 would not stand as a Christmas season but also a tragedy engraved to the hearts of its victims whom got crumbled of their strongest scaffoldings, as well as the bonding they could have had on Christmas Eve. This prompted JCI-Cebu to reach out to communities, talk to them, and give them relief goods, drinkable water, water filters, solar lamps, clothing, and other mental and health services through the Oplan Kaagapay project chaired by Carrel Pantollano, the Senior Director for Community of JCICebu.

Hope keeps getting a little brighter for the victims as the project successfully convened several private and public organizations, including donation drives from entrepreneur Slater Young, to work hand in hand in providing the victims the best possible care and services. Intermittent rain did not dampen the courageous and caring spirit of the members and partners of JCI-Cebu who participated in different waves of donations drives and fund-raising campaigns. Instead, the upheavals and the things they do to respond to them are the seeds that grow their sense of responsibility, camaraderie, and caring towards their community. JCI-Cebu’s Oplan Kaagapay has helped many communities get back on their feet. The help may not be too big, but it is enough to bring in BIG waves of unity and coming together for one purpose – to serve humanity. “Gikan sa akong kasingkasing, daghan kaayong salamat (From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much),” Lola Linda expressed her deep gratitude to our brothers as they aided her to a shade to let her talk her heart out. “Your presence is highly appreciated,” this time, she said it in English.

Every calamity always has two sides – a dreadful dead-end that will sprout loss and a test that will strengthen the bonds of people to rise up to erratic challenges of nature. This proves that Typhoon Odette is neither a curse nor a threat to cower upon, but an opportunity for us to be grateful, to be mindful, and to be reminded that we are all brothers and sisters living on the same beautiful household called Earth. It also serves as a reminder that we are given strong hearts to endure it all. After all, we have to be broken in order to be whole again.

Street Art by Creative Alliance of Multimedia and Visual Arts Students (CAMVAS), CIT-U
I
f you think about street art in Cebu, you might think of the one near General Maxilom Avenue where vivid artworks span the entire wall of an old residence. Or maybe you remember the one in North Escario Street where a noticeably lengthy graffiti treats every 12L jeepney passengers with a feast for their eyes. You can’t help but stop by and take an instagrammable selfie. The sprawling of art in every corner of the city means only one thing: street art in Cebu is still alive and thriving. Now, there are more reasons to celebrate the colorful culture of the Queen City of the South, as JCI Cebu aims to put Cebu on the map of street art destinations in the world through it’s biggest project yet - the Cebu Street Art District project. What started as a random idea over a hot cup of coffee became the biggest collaborative project of the new decade, as the project targets to transform a zero zone to a culturally rich tourism destination.

In partnership with Converge ICT Solutions, one of the country’s leading telecommunication service providers in the Philippines, JCI Cebu tapped talented street artists from the Creative Alliance of Multimedia and Visual Arts Students (CAMVAS) of Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) to turn the 870-meter wall of Queen City Memorial Gardens into a long continuous street art. Since the wall spans the entire sidewalk of A. Soriano Avenue, the project is considered to be the longest street art in the entire country.
not just a tourism project, as it also serves as the biggest fundraising project of the chapter to support its mission of creating an impact to the local community. As of the writing of this article, the project is ongoing and targets to be completed earlier this May. Impactful and instagrammable - truly the future of Cebu is bright and colorful. See you on the wall!
To protect and maintain the artworks, JCI Cebu also partners with our brothers from Alpha Kappa Rho, Tau Gamma Phi, and the National Police, conducting cleanup drives and roving for inspection regularly. It’s NUCLEUS | 27

he day I took the challenge of being the Chapter President is the day I knew I will be extremely busy. However, since my father was also a Jaycee, the first thing I did was asked for his support and at the same time I set expectations that taking on the role and responsibilities will take up a lot of my time. Thankfully, he immediately gave his full support and with it, his wealth of experience as a Jaycee. Managing JCI, my health and my family is not an easy task. There are sacrifices to be made because you cannot please everybody and that is a fact. So initially I had to go through my year one day at a time and since I willingly took on the role, I made sure that the chapter will be my priority and I committed to being present
regardless if it was physically or virtually. I always see to it that I make time for my members and the chapter. Further, I’d like to use this opportunity to impart few insights to my fellow brothers. First, we have our own story, our own quest; but it is empowering when you know that the success of your story/quest depends on you. Second, to be an aspiring leader you need to tell your story and be the champion of your quest. There will be ups and downs to be crossed, people to know, mistakes to learn, and memories to create. Finally, a leader is a result of the collective learnings and knowledge you acquired throughout. I’ve always been thankful to JCI for all the life lessons I had the opportunity to learn. I encourage all JCI members to welcome the opportunity, to learn from the mistakes, and improve yourself.
