It has been years since the world experienced a great reboot sparked by the global pandemic. We have witnessed how our way of life could bring an existential threat. But this same catalyst brought us some disruptive innovations shaping emerging businesses and industries. Today, we are back to a new normal where world events can fuel a volatile, uncertain complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world.
One of the biggest words in the field of technology is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Its history can be traced back to the early 1950s when commercial computers were still very young. Today, AI has become sophisticated with the invention of neural networks that mimic the way how human brain operates. Such developments attracted some ethical questions: should AI learn by itself, should it accurately mimic human activities, could it eventually replace people in businesses? These questions will make us wonder how far could AI go in the near future.
With these world events, the world is transforming before our eyes. But could this be a prelude to a much controversial theory, the “singleton hypothesis?” The hypothesis proposed by Oxford University philosopher Nick Bostrom states that intelligent life on Earth will eventually form a “singleton” – one organization that will take the form of a single government or artificial intelligence that runs everything.
Of course, these are all wild imaginations from the world’s biggest thinkers and academicians. We are facing a constant evolution that could lead us either to a positive or negative outcome for the future of human societies. Just like many of us, there really isn’t a typical day considering how fast things change but we need to be transformation-ready and position our organizations to develop a learning culture and adapt to the inevitable unknowns of the future.
As a publication, this is our way to celebrate and document our achievements in the past year. As an organization, this is part of our social responsibility to reinforce a vision that will lead us to an ideal future regardless of the VUCA world we and our businesses must continuously navigate. Ultimately, this is our way to counter our forgetting curve to continuously thrive, level up, and DILAAB the passions that reside within.
CEBU’S FINEST GENTLEMEN ARE NOT JUST MADE. Like the finest gems, they’re BUILT through the highest of pressures, the most rigorous of processes, and the most extreme of perseverance, respect and grit.
The MARK they make on those they serve - the local economy, their friends, and themselves, aren’t formed overnight. They are formed under intense pressure, like diamonds, and consist of many individual crystals.
This JCI Cebu brotherhood, which has left its mark on countless people’s lives since 1948, has a single ultimate mission for each of its members as we celebrate our 75th year together: BUILD YOUR MARK.
My first experience making a difference was with Oplan Kaagapay: Pag-abag for the Fire victims in Hipodromo, where we distributed livelihood kits to those who had been left with nothing after a disaster. That’s when I really began to take pleasure in JCI and find myself wanting to contribute more.
From that point on, I began to encounter many new and interesting things throughout my five-year journey in JCI. Because of all the challenges I’ve faced, I hope to leave a lasting mark on JCI Cebu. Following the teachings of James Scouller, I want to stress the importance of the three P’s of leadership.
The first P is purpose. Citing Abraham Lincoln’s famous words, “for the people, by the people, and with the people,” as an example. Because of my positive experience working on the first project with the President and the members, I constantly put the needs of the group ahead of my own and try to think of ways in which I can give back to them.
The second P is People. JCI members are not required to stay in the organization and many choose to leave. That’s why I feel it’s important to stress that our membership is the key to the organization’s long-term viability and profound influence.
This brings me to the last P, Process. This year, JCI Cebu will achieve its goals through consistency, continuing projects from the previous years, and
innovations, empowering all members to pursue personal passion projects.
To all the Past Presidents, thank you for continuing the organization and keeping the fire burning throughout the years. To all the Corporate Partners and Sponsors, thank you for maintaining your trust and support in all of our activities. To all my Board of Directors, thank you for accepting the challenge and being with me as we build and make an impact for this one year to lead. Lastly, to all my members and to all the readers: Leave a legacy that will be felt 75 years from now. You are more than just a diamond.
So I issue this challenge to you: let’s begin building our mark starting today.
Greetings of love and peace!
I would like to extend my congratulations to the Board of Directors and members of JCI Cebu Inc. led by President Marc Peterson Ng on your 75th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies. This event coincides with the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of JCI Philippines, which is a testament that JCI Cebu Inc. is indeed one of the pillar chapters of JCI that has remained strong, united and triumphant over the years.
You are given one year to lead, serve and work for your beloved chapter. May each one of you be inspired to LEAD WITH PASSION and use this opportunity not only to bring your chapter to
greater heights but to be more of service for JCI, for the people and the community.

2023 National President
JCI Philippines
As a continuously growing national organization, we have been faced with countless highs and lows that tested our ability to adapt and still be of excellence. As we are now celebrating our 75th Year Anniversary, we take a time to look back at our humble beginnings.
To JCI Cebu, you have been one of the chapters that immensely contributed to the welfare of our national organization. A chapter that champions training and also contributed excellent members of the National Board.
Celebrating your 75th year is a milestone that is definitely one for the books. A milestone that shows limpid examples of how your organization did not just sustain but also evolved, grew, and fostered
continuously championing the values we always recite. Similar to a diamond, we had been through a lot but ended up strong and still shining as JCI members.
As members of our beloved Junior Chamber International, a service is an act that is no longer a stranger to us. In fact, we live with it. It is something that motivates us, something that keeps us going. A reason for all of us to listen with the innately deep sense of duty, that caring attitude towards others especially those in need.
Cheers, JCI Cebu to your 75th Year Anniversary.

Kevin TolibasI would like to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to congratulate JCI Cebu on your diamond jubilee—75th Induction and Turnover Ceremonies as the 2023 Board of Directors headed by Pres Marc Peterson Ng take on the challenge. Just as a diamond can only be polished by another diamond, it is only through genuine, all-out engagement with others that people can polish their character and help each other to reach greater heights. And we in JCI Valenzuela could not be any prouder to be able to join hands with you in this journey.

President JCI Tanauan Pasaka Ma. Monica Licaros 2023 Local Organization President JCI ValenzuelaIn the fast-paced changing world of this generation, we always say that “no one gets left behind” – an oldfashioned quote yet a significant statement in the realm of community development. This is the core of the JCI Cebu Inc. project PWDE All! (Persons With Disability Engagement and ALLiance).
On April 8, 2022, JCI Cebu’s Community Development team made it their mission to explore opportunities for persons with disabilities. Led by the 2022 LO President Jacques Estola and Vice President for Community Development Homer Joshua Inoferio, the team met with Engr. Felipe Pimentel Jr., former head of the PWD Affairs of the Cebu City Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS).
During the meeting, Engr. Pimentel shared salient information on the current programs for persons with disabilities. Lorine Tutur and Lourdes Mirasol Carabana, presidents of PWD Associations from Barangays Pasil and Ermita, respectively, were also present at the meeting and invited JCI Cebu to be part of their respective general assemblies, establishing good partnership for more PWD-related projects.
This was the beginning of JCI Cebu Inc.’s PWDE All! (Persons with Disability Engagement and ALLiance).
Project PWDE All! is a flagship project of JCI Cebu Inc. conceptualized by JCI Mem. Lenbi Laborte, whose father, a partially blind man, was a member of the Cebu City PWD Federation. His father completed blind massage training from the Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center (AVRC) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office 7 (DSWDFO7) and currently works for a blind massage spa in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.
In partnership with the Cebu City Federation of PWDs, Department of Social Welfare and Services, Cebu City Government, DSWD-FO7 AVRC, Central Visayas Network of NGOs (CENVISNET), JCI Cebu sister chapters, private and public sectors, professional groups, and other institutions, PWDE All! is poised to becoming a long-term sustainable program in Cebu to promote PWD’s welfare and wellbeing by providing basic social services and assistive devices, and promoting community awareness and education, sports development, and establishing partnerships with the PWD community. The project is aligned with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Sustainable Development Goals on reducing inequalities within and among countries.
In July 2022, JCI Cebu Inc., together with the Cebu City Federation of PWDs and other partners, conducted a series of activities to celebrate the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week:
• July 10: Cebu City PWD Leaders Ms. Jocelyn Llesol and Engr. Felipe “Jun” Pimentel Jr. were featured in Hope TV, a Facebook Live show produced by JCI Cebu Inc.’s Organizational Development Team (Episode 4: “Transcending Barriers”)
• July 16: A webinar on Understanding Disabilities and Basics on Sign Language was held with Mr. Socrates Llesol and Ms. Love Agbay
• July 23: Halad Para sa PWDs with the Healthcare Profession and with the support of the Office of the Cebu City Vice Mayor
• July 26: Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Workshop for PWDs at the Cebu Business Hotel
• July 29: Supporting the Pageant for PWDs in Cebu City
Through these projects, potential PWD youth were enlisted to become scholars for the technical vocational courses offered by the Healthcare Profession. Cebuano PWD Athletes Arman Pila Dino, athletics T47 400m silver medalist and 100m bronze medalist, and Cheryl Abella Angot, gold medalist in Blitz PI and silver medalist in standard PI of chess category in the recently concluded 11th ASEAN Paragames at Solo, Indonesia, were supported and recognized by the City Government and featured in one of the episodes of Hope TV (Episode 7: “This Ability”).
“JCI Cebu gave us an opportunity to speak out and be heard. At least JCI Cebu is here to make our voice amplified,” said Llesol, president of Differently Abled Talents, Entertainment, and Sports (DATES).
Engr. Jun added, “It’s very difficult for us to lobby programs for the PWDs. We have opportunities in speaking out in the [Cebu City] Council yet we always must bring proposals that may sometimes take a long time to be approved. We are very grateful that JCI Cebu is now here to support our endeavors.”
In December 2022, JCI Cebu Inc. will support two more initiatives for persons with disabilities.
Hudyaka sa Bukid sa mga PWD Children will be a Christmas get-together for eight mountain barangays in Cebu City, providing them the opportunity to celebrate the yuletide season by showcasing their talents and receiving gifts and school supplies from benevolent individuals.
Pasko sa PWDs aims to provide employment opportunities and develop the entrepreneurial spirit of PWDs, while celebrating Christmas together with the JCI Cebu members and its partners.
Dear JCI Cebu,
Serving together with you as your 74th Local Organization (LO) President was a BIG challenge and an exciting adventure altogether. My deepest gratitude to everyone. This is All for the Glory of God.
As a voluntary leadership organization bearing the historic weight of the iconic JCI Cebu Golden Medallion is an honor and I wear it with humility. Striving an effort to bring a light so great to the world, that even after we have gone, the light remains. Lumens gloriae, the light of glory!
For 2022, the light inspired BIG THINGS ARE COMING, to chase excellence like an Olympian’s dream of going the distance and being BIG with our ambitions. A straightforward 365-day game plan and ambition for team JCI Cebu is to be THE BEST OF THE BEST.
8 mamba years as a Cebu Jaycees member. Talent counts but effort counts twice as a servant leader and sportsman. I always remember NE Ken Ngo telling me “just show up”. And here we are, the team breaching a higher standard. Beating personal bests in many leadership development opportunities in the 5 BIG TEAMS, (1) The Training Bureau, (2) The Organizational Development, (3) Business Development, (4) Community Development, and (5) the Linkages Team.
Like an orchestra, we are alpha men, heroes playing the game together like a beautiful symphony you hear in Ode to Joy. A good captain is not made from calm seas. We make captains out of rough waters. Our leadership year had many “Sulogs” – rough currents. In October, while playing basketball with our brothers, I ruptured my ACL and MCL. In December we braved Typhoon Odette, and in early 2022 we had our fair share of internal, legal, and external challenges. We mourned the passing of the fathers of our members, a marathon of projects, and so on. We eat challenges for breakfast.
We are blessed with our team dynamics and faithfulness to the chapter when our brothers stepped up to lead when it mattered the most. Because of this, we embraced our oneyear-to-lead as a leadership marathon, a test of leadership endurance, character, and grit. Hence, we believe that JCI is an MBA and we are students at this University of Leaders The price we pay is our time, effort, and sometimes health. However, the fruits we reap are earth’s greatest treasure, true friends, and a humbled human personality.
In our JCI mission, there are crossroads of priorities. We just have to trust our guts. The JCI Midyear Convention in Tagaytay made me appreciate that solutions are a team effort and struggles are not exclusive. Some of my batchmates carry the load with confidence. We are stronger together as a TEAM and we just need to keep braving the seas Setbacks make us wiser. Varied stress, at the prime of our youth, is better than having no stress at all. Efficient project management allows us to be more inclusive, sustainable, and relevant for the community.
Contemplating these THINGS we know our lives are our greatest enterprise for the world. We should author our own stories, and with our team, we can ball with the giants in the big leagues. ARE COMING. At halftime, we played outside our comfort zones with 8 new projects: (1) an animal welfare
program, (2) a JCI Golf Tournament (3) Jayceelympics - 9 multisport (4) PWD projects, (5) business & entrepreneurship programs (6) gamifying the training experience aim for worlds, (7), enhance our local growth & development program - The 4ORCE and (8) cultural & tourism programs. We rocked during the conventions. Remember that big circle, shoulder to shoulder, jumping and shouting a loud “J….C…I….. Cebuuuuuu…..” on stage in front of everyonea moment of glory. We met new allies in the communities we serve, applied the JCI Action Framework, conducted needs analysis, and worked together to make this nation a better place - this is a few of the many JCI Cebu experiences in 2022 which we shall forever treasure.
BEST OF THE BEST. How was our game? Our stats: 17 QUADROS – the highest in our chapter’s history. 5 TEMIONGS, 4 SINAGTALAS, Individual awards: PUBLIC SPEAKING CHAMPION, Most Outstanding Trainer, Senator, Project Chairman, and New Member and 100% JCIPEA (JCI Philippines Seal of Efficiency).
Nominated 32x and won 21x in the JCI Area Conference in Catbalogan Samar. We got the 3 prestigious BEST OF THE BEST (BOTB) Awards: (1) BOTB Local Organization, (2) BOTB Local Project, and (3) BOTB LO President.
Nominated 16x as top 5 nationwide and won 11x in including a BOTB Local Project in the JCI Philippines National Convention in Surigao. JCI Bro. Daegie won the National Public Speaking Championship and will compete in JCI ASPAC Indonesia & JCI WORLDCON Switzerland soon.
Awards and plaques aren’t the only measures in the Olympian’s chase for excellence. Sustainable impact, character, and leadership growth are the best fruits. Genuine smiles of the kids, the PWDs we helped, round-the-clock relief operations for Cebu and Southern Leyte, fun fellowships, and the joy of seeing your brothers win in life and the teams doing their best projects:
THE TEAMS. The Community Development Team helped 15,457 families during Typhoon Odette and activated 37 Oplan Kaagapay’s relief and rebuilding projects. Together with PWD community leaders, 15 activities of the Inclusivity Program for Differently Abled Persons – PWDE ALL for 517 PWD friends. 312 kids joined our basketball training camp in Pinamungajan. We renovated an area to become a Taekwondo gymnasium in Abellana Sports Complex. Planted Bakhaw, Bamboo, and local hardwood. Our millennial youth farmers (scholars) learned farming entrepreneurship in Dalaguete. We conducted Laag Abag – a Public Health Program, which provided access to medical, legal, and dental services to our friends in Pardo. We also partnered with animal welfare organizations to organize a Dog Show for Cause in Parkmall. To address employment displacement concerns brought about by the pandemic and natural calamities, we conducted a Job Fair in Ayala, which served 2,442 job seekers.
The Training Bureau hosted an area-wide training at the JCI World Convention in Hong Kong by our LSDD Jurex Phil Suson. “Transcend,” our training theme, explored
tech platforms like GatherTown, Discord, and Trello, thus gamifying the training experience. Pecha Kucha, The #InsightStory, Slogos Night, and Pop-Up Training, brought fun and leadership closer to the members and Junior JCs. With the vision of Cebu being a City of Coders, Hour of Code & Python Web Development Bootcamp, our educational program, taught kids and adults programming.
The Business Development Team raised a 7-digit gross fund in the best fundraising year. They developed new JCI Cebu merchandise and JCI Cebu Mercado – an exclusive Viber group for members to expose and support each other’s business and merchandising ventures. Christmez Bazaar, our Trade Fair for a Cause, had more than 40 tenants. The 1st Jaycee Cup Golf Tournament drew around 35 participants at the Cebu Country Club.
