The theme of this year’s 74th JCI Cebu Anniversary is “Sulog” meaning current, part of the sea that moves continuously forward like the tides. The tides of times have landed us here in Casa Gorrordo - a Philippine National Historic Landmark and a house of a family that survived two revolutions (1800 & 1900), to take appreciation of beautiful history and culture. We have been sustaining breakthroughs over the years in many forms of tides. We ride the highs and lows and remain steadfast on our journey, a process we dream to become the best of the best individually and as a leading chapter in Asia. JCI Cebu is a landmark and a big tide in my life now. It’s midyear and we have learned so much in the past 259 days since we embarked on this adventure and responsibility to lead the chapter, I am blessed and happy with where we are now. As a leadership process-oriented organization, we made the effort to (1) Thinking Big (2) Braving the unknown and (3) Gratitude for the Blessings. Thinking BIG. Building a culture to push the limits of what we can do, and being bigger than the game is our 1st tide. Establishing 5 BIG teams: (a) Training Bureau, (b) Organizational Development (c) Business Development (d) Community Development (e ) Linkages Team, has been the fundamental part of BIG things for this year. They innovated, opened new project opportunities, and made landmarks in many communities and partner organizations. We have grown at least 10% and may reach numbers of a category 1 chapter before the term ends. Our aspirants are passionate and have brother mentors in their novice journey.
Gratitude for the blessings received. No matter how complicated the situation has been, we learned to be humble and grateful. This year gave us waves of challenges to come out stronger together. Members come and go as this is purely a voluntary organization, we have to lead with passion and integrity. Blessing comes in the hardest and darkest of days. Our rich history as the 2nd oldest chapter in Asia, fuels our leadership endurance and humility to ask for guidance from the senators and past presidents. We have lost some but gained so many. We have introduced new flagship projects as a legacy to the next generation of leaders, all thanks to the members and BODs who have been exemplary in their roles and courage to lead and share the blessing. I have learned to say thank you more than ever, and expect nothing in return, just like the tides it will pass by, yet it has touched our lives, and it is a blessing for us all. This Sulog made me think Bigger, Brave the unknown and Be grateful with blessings in many forms. We will soon celebrate our diamond anniversary, until then lets us work together to serve the community and experience active citizenship close to our hearts, with 106 days to end our 1 year to lead, let us be legendary and make history riding the “Sulog” of 2022.
As a leader, I was exposed to the many colorful characters of the team, impactful leaders, and genuine young people serving the community and some otherwise, and all of these are part of the tides for 2022. I have learned to appreciate the quality of effort we give to every activity we attend. Spending more time with the team helps me learn a lot as member of this brotherhood. Braving the unknown. It will always be the chase for excellence. the unknown is always exciting. The ocean and its depth don’t fear us, it is being idle to the many opportunities we don’t act upon that is worrying. This year, we have approached the term to form projects that we are not usually known for. We religiously follow the JCI action framework (SAPAE). We have also introduced, transparency and efficiency in chapter administration. We have traveled to many inductions around the country, 24 is the goal to collaborate, build friendships and create memories. Sulog is a life of an adventurer, and it’s beautiful what we see when far from home.
